Nels Flanagan will compete for MSUB at the Montana State University Open in Bozeman, Mont.
MSUB returns to track and field competition with a meet hosted by Montana State University. BILLINGS, Mont. – The MSUB men’s track and field team is heading to Bozeman, Mont., on Friday, Jan. 15, for the Montana State University Open. The Yellowjackets opened their indoor season with a meet over a month ago on Dec. 5, 2015, in Spearfish S.D., at an event hosted by Black Hills State University. Since then, the team has been training over the holiday break and returns to competition this week.
“This will be the first of three regular season meets leading up to the GNAC Indoor Championships in February, so we hope to put some good marks up,” MSUB head coach Dave Coppock said. “This is always a competitive meet with DI schools Montana and Montana State competing. At the meet in December, senior Josh Panasuk came away with two top 5-finishes placing fourth in the mile in 4:31.22 and fifth in the 3,000 meters in 9:11.72. MSUB finished third in the 4,400 meter relay with members Landon Polkow, Quincy Wittman, Mark Hovland, and Cameron Stanek. Several members of the team who were not at the meet in South Dakota will be back on the track this week, including All-American Robert Peterson. After a grueling cross country season, the senior sat the first meet of the indoor season out, but is looking to make a strong return at the meet in Bozeman. Peterson owns the MSUB indoor record in the mile (4:10.76) and the 3,000 meters (8:28.68). “Robert will be opening up this weekend after sitting out the Black Hills meet taking a break after cross country,” Coppock continued. “He’ll be shooting for a National qualifying mark in the 5,000 meters, which he seldom gets a chance to run. Others to watch will be Brady Ostermiller and Nels Flanagan in the throws and our men’s Distance Medley Relay.” Expected to compete at the meet are: NCAA Division I Montana State and the University of Montana, along with NAIA Rocky Mountain College, Carroll College, and Montana Western. Live statistics will not be available for Friday’s meet. Results and the meet recap will be available at msubsports.com following the conclusion of the event.
