Yellowjacket Hoops Stars Earn All-GNAC Accolades

Five total Yellowjackets - three women and two men - were named to the 2015-16 Great Northwest Athletic Conference all-league teams for their outstanding achievements this season. Junior forward Alisha Breen was a first-team all-GNAC pick, and men’s forward Preston Beverly was picked as the GNAC Freshman of the Year. Men’s junior Marc Matthews and women’s seniors Janiel Olson and Monica Grimsrud all earned honorable mention all-conference as well, and Yellowjacket women’s head coach Kevin Woodin was picked as the GNAC Coach of the Year for the second time in the last three seasons. Yellowjacket Women Head to GNAC Championships

After being picked to finish in seventh place in the GNAC preseason coaches’ poll, MSUB’s women’s basketball team stormed through the regular season with a conference record of 15-5 and picked up the third seed into the conference tournament. The Yellowjackets will compete for a berth into the NCAA West Region Championships, where they reached the title game during the 2013-14 season. Peterson Returns to Nationals After setting an MSUB school record in the mile with a mark of 4:07.67, senior track & field runner Robert Peterson qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships for the second year in-a-row. Peterson earned USTFCCCA All-America honors last season when he finished in 10th place at the event, and will look to repeat the feat in his final year with the ‘Jackets. Spring Sports In The Air The reigning GNAC Champions have kicked off their 2016 campaigns, with MSUB’s softball team getting started at the 7th Annual Desert Stinger the first week of February and the Yellowjacket baseball team beginning with a 6-3 record including a four-game road sweep at Metro State University. The softball team gets its conference schedule started the weekend of March 4-6, playing at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C. The Yellowjacket baseball squad will also kick off GNAC play that weekend, heading to Ellensburg, Wash., to face Central Washington University in a four-game series. Both teams make their 2016 home debuts on March 19, with softball playing at Avitus Group Stadium on MSUB’s campus and baseball playing down the street at Dehler Park. All 2016 home games and select road games will feature live video with play-by-play commentary, and live statistics available through MSUB’s Stretch Internet portal. Meet New MSUB Volleyball Coach Casey Williams

A local Billings Skyview High School graduate, Casey Williams returns to her hometown to coach the Yellowjackets after tremendous success coaching at Frank Phillips College in Borger, Texas. Williams led FPC to a 36-6 record a season ago, conference and regional titles, and an appearance in the NJCAA national tournament. Williams earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of West Alabama, after competing in volleyball for two seasons at Spokane Falls Community College out of high school. Williams takes over for the Yellowjackets, who went 6-23 last season and finished 5-15 in GNAC play.

Senior Sendoff for Emmanuel Johnson

Completing a memorable two-year career with the Yellowjackets, men’s basketball forward Emmanuel Johnson was the lone senior honored in a pregame ceremony on Feb. 27 in MSUB’s final game of the year. For the first time in his collegiate career, Johnson’s father, Glenert Brown, was in attendance to watch his son compete in an emotional close to his final college season.
