Freshman Shaniah Schwend sets the MSUB record in the women’s triple jump at the MSU Open in Bozeman, Mont.

Jorey Egeland wins the 5,000 meters and Garrett Love wins the 10,000 meters for MSUB at the Montana State University Open in Bozeman, Mont, while freshman Shaniah Schwend bests the MSUB record in the triple jump.

BOZEMAN, Mont. – Sophomore Jorey Egeland won the men’s 5,000 meter run in 15:53.97 while junior Garrett Love won the men’s 10,000 meter race in 33:40.99 at the Montana State University Open at the track and field center on Saturday.

Egeland won the men’s 5,000 meter run in a field of seven competitors. Also, in the 5,000 meters from MSUB, Ivan Colmenero was fourth (16:30.18) and Tyus Mendoza sixth (16:35.52).

Love’s time should be a qualifying mark for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships taking place May 13.

Freshman Shaniah Schwend set a MSUB record in the triple jump. The Bridger, Mont., native placed seventh in the event in 34-01.25. Schwend bested Leah Berry’s mark of 33-8 set in 2011.

“The meet went really well at MSU,” MSUB head coach Dave Coppock said. “It was a good opener for us. The weather cooperated, it was cold, but also sunny and not too windy. Garrett posted a really good time in the 10,000 meters that should hold up for conference. Robert’s time in the men’s 1500 meters is a great time that will convert well in the conference field. Austin did well in the 110 meter hurdles; he is really closing in on the school record. He is less than .3 from the MSUB record. That record is one of the longest standing records, so we are hoping to see him break that this year. Nate was second in the 200 meters and third in the 400 meters, so two really solid races for him. All the training that he has done this winter showed, he is only a second away from setting another school record.”

“Shaniah set the school record in the triple jump which is huge for the women’s team,” Coppock continued. “She is just a freshman so she is making really good progress.”

Senior Robert Peterson placed second in the men’s 1500 meter run with a time of 3:59.58.

Jinise Trueblood placed third in the women’s 5,000 meter run in 21:22.10. Janessa Williams finished fourth in the 100 meter hurdles in 16.19.

Schwend had double sevens on the day. She was seventh in the triple jump, while Williams was 10th at 33-00.50.

Schwend also finished seventh in the long jump with Williams just behind her in eighth at 14-11.25. For her performances, Schwend was awarded the St. Vincent Healthcare Athlete of the Day accolade.

Nate Vanderby was second in the 200 meters in 22.94 and third in the men’s 400 meters with a time of 50.89. Cameron Stanek was third in the 100 meter dash in 11.51 and Kaelen Shay placed fourth in 11.68 with Austin Lindquist finishing seventh in 23.77. Stanek was third in the 200 meters (23.04), Shay fifth (23.32), and Lindquist seventh (23.77).

In the 110 meter hurdles Lindquist was the runner-up in 15:71 and Quincy Wittman placed third in 16:93.

In the field events, Brady Ostermiller placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 47-03.00. Nels Flanagan placed fourth in the discus at 140-06 with Ostermiller just behind recording a throw of 134-09.

In the hammer throw, the Yellowjackets placed 4th-6th place with Flanagan (142-06), Ostermiller (109-05) and Wittman (109-00).
