The MSU Billings men’s and women’s track and field teams compete during the rain at the Third Annual Yellowjacket/Battlin’ Bears Open in Laurel, Mont. LAUREL, Mont. – Competing in the afternoon rain showers, the MSUB track and field teams battled through the conditions during the Third Annual Yellowjacket/Battlin’ Bears Open contested at the Laurel Sports Complex Thursday. The MSUB men’s team took first-place in the meet with 176.5 points over second-place Carroll College at 110.5 points. The Yellowjacket women’s team finished in second-place in the team competition with 106 points behind Carroll College at 194 points.
Montana State University Billings won 16 total individual titles during a wet and soggy day at the track. Senior Della Lyle won the women’s 10,000 meters in 36:51.66. That time is Lyle’s fourth MSUB track and field record of the season (besting Whitney Mikelson, 38:05.54, 2012), a Great Northwest Athletic Conference automatic qualifying time, and a NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time. Also taking titles during the co-hosted meet with Rocky Mountain College was senior Robert Peterson in both the men’s mile in 4:06.00, and the 5,000 meters in 15:27.82. MSUB seniors Lyle, Peterson, Jinise Trueblood, Brielle Davis, Blair Street, Taylor Condon, and Cameron Stanek were all honored during the last home track and field meet of their collegiate careers. Besides the wins for Lyle and Peterson, Street and Stanek also earned individual titles. Street won both the women’s 100 meters (13.39) and the 200 meters (27.08). Stanek won the men’s 200 meters (23.24) and placed third in both the 400 meters (53.21) and the javelin (140 feet and 8 inches). Other standout performances include Austin Lindquist’s win in the men’s long jump. His personal-best leap of 23 feet and .75 inches is the third-best effort in the GNAC this season. Lindquist also won the men’s 110 meter hurdles in 15.48. Landon Polkow won the men’s 400 meter hurdles in windy conditions at 55.23. Janessa Williams won the triple jump at 35 feet and 9.50 inches and the women’s 110 meter hurdles at 16.23. Shaniah Schwend won the women’s long jump at 16 feet and 3 inches. Quincy Wittman won the men’s triple jump at 41 feet and 3.25 inches. In the field events, Nels Flanagan won the men’s discus with a throw of 144 feet and 8 inches. He also placed second in the men’s javelin at a distance of 162 feet and 7 inches. Josey Smiedala won the women’s 400 meters in a time of 1:00.14. On the men’s side, Nate Vanderby placed first in the men’s 400 meters in 50.78. Up next for MSU Billings is the Trudnowski Open hosted by Carroll College on Apr. 22, in Helena, Mont.
