ABOUT YELLOWJACKET ATHLETICS Home of the Yellowjackets, the Montana State University Billings department of intercollegiate athletics supports 15 men’s and women’s varsity sports which compete in the NCAA at the Division II level. MSUB is one of 11 full-time members of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, which features 11 championships throughout each academic year. More than 240 student-athletes compete on MSUB’s teams, and members of Yellowjacket teams posted a collective 3.15 grade point average during the 2015-16 academic year. MSUB-sponsored varsity sports include men’s and women’s teams in basketball, cheer/ stunt, cross-country, golf, soccer, indoor and outdoor track & field, as well as baseball, softball, and women’s volleyball. Highlights from the 2015-16 season included a second NCAA West Region Championships berth for MSUB’s women’s basketball team in the last three years, as the Yellowjackets played their way to the title game of the GNAC tournament before advancing. Junior Alisha Breen led the GNAC in scoring with 17.4 points per game, and senior Janiel Olson broke the school’s career rebounding record. Senior Della Lyle stole the show on the track for the ‘Jackets, becoming the first All-American in school history on the women’s side. She was selected as the GNAC Newcomer of the Year in both indoor and outdoor seasons, and represented the Yellowjackets at the NCAA National Championships. On the baseball diamond, the ‘Jackets claimed their second straight GNAC regular-season title, setting a program record with 30 victories including their first-ever postseason win in the conference tournament. Junior Cody Cooper shattered the school record with 106 strikeouts in 99 1/3 innings, and senior Luke Reinschmidt closed his historic career by earning first-team all-region honors for a second straight season. MSUB’s men’s soccer team also had a highlight year, posting its first winning season since 2012. Sophomore Ricardo Palomino led the entire NCAA west region in goals with 16, and earned first-team all-region honors. In women’s soccer, the ‘Jackets advanced to their third GNAC Championship tournament in the last four seasons, after posting a second consecutive winning year. MSUB hosted three conference championship events and an NCAA Division II West Region Championship for the first time ever during the 2014-15 year. The ‘Jackets welcomed more than 30 teams to Billings on Nov. 22, 2014 for the NCAA Division II West Region Championships at Amend Park, hosted the 2014-15 Men’s and Women’s GNAC Basketball Championships from March 4-7, 2015 at Alterowitz Gym, and capped off the year by hosting the 2015 GNAC Baseball Championships from May 7-8 at Dehler Park. MSUB also serves as the host of the largest NCAA Division II softball tournament, the Desert Stinger Classic, which was played for the sixth year in a row from Feb. 12-14, 2015 at Majestic Park in Las Vegas.

ABOUT YELLOWJACKET ATHLETICS The 2014-15 year also featured three All-American athletes from MSUB, including senior Kayleen Goggins (women’s basketball), junior Robert Peterson (men’s indoor track & field), and senior Brody Miller (baseball). Miller was also selected as the 201415 GNAC Male Athlete of the Year for all sports, just the second baseball player in the conference’s history to win the award, and the second student-athlete from MSUB to collect the honor as he joined women’s basketball star Bobbi Knudsen (2013-14). Capturing GNAC crowns during the 2014-15 year were MSUB’s baseball and softball teams. The Yellowjackets won the 2015 GNAC Softball Championships and advanced all the way to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II West Region Championships in May. MSUB’s women’s soccer team also competed for a GNAC Championship title, finishing in second place in the conference standings and earning the No. 2 seed into the conference tournament in the fall of 2014. In men’s golf, senior Jake Hedge also represented the ‘Jackets at the NCAA Regional level, competing as an individual in the championships in Monterey Bay, Calif., from May 6-8, 2015. In 2013-14, the MSUB women’s basketball team made history by winning the 2013-14 Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular season title and advancing to the NCAA Division II west regional championship game. MSUB’s 2013-14 women’s basketball team joined the Yellowjackets’ 1998-99 squad as the only two in program history to advance to the NCAA regional title game. The latter continued on to the Elite Eight, marking the furthest-advancing MSUB team in the school’s history. In 2012, the MSUB softball team won the GNAC regular season title with a 32-18 overall record and earned hosting privileges for the 2013 conference softball tournament. The 2012 Yellowjacket men’s basketball team also earned a conference title, defeating the University of Alaska Anchorage 74-70 in the GNAC tournament championship game. Formerly known as Eastern Montana College, MSUB athletics stem back to the 1927-28 season, the year in which the university was founded. The Yellowjackets have competed in a number of different conferences throughout the years, and prior to the 1980-81 season the athletic department transitioned from the NAIA to competing at the NCAA Division II level. The MSUB Hall of Fame and Distinction inducted its inaugural class in 1990 and serves as a tribute towards influential figures on and off the court, in both current and retired sports.

New Faces: MSUB track & field freshmen Shaniah Schwend and Janessa Williams Wednesday, April 13, 2016 Two of MSUB’s most talented freshmen are already staking their claim by breaking school records as jumpers on the Yellowjackets’ track team. MSUB SPORTS – Beads of sweat drip down the face of budding Montana State University Billings track and field star Shaniah Schwend. Staring down the runway and into the well-manicured pit of sand that awaits her arrival, she knows she has three attempts to jump her way into the finals in the triple jump. Nerves flutter in the stomach of teammate and fellow jumper Janessa Williams, as she looks on in anticipation of Schwend’s takeoff from the wooden board. Schwend tries to calm herself down and prepare for her next leap. She hears her name being called. It is her turn. Williams offers a final word of encouragement. Plunging forward down the runway, Schwend streaks towards the sand pit at a record-setting pace. She drives forward with all the power she has, carrying hopes of making a mark that day that her competition will remember her by. This runway is where two of MSUB’s most talented freshmen, and the only two female jumpers on the Yellowjackets’ roster, continue to make leaps and bounds within the program and competition. Schwend and Williams can be found cheering each other on, competing against one another, or helping each other leap, sprint, or jump to their personal bests every day and every meet. “I look up to my teammate Janessa because we both really help each other out during meets and practice,” noted Schwend. Williams and Schwend both came from small Montana towns, as Schwend grew up in Bridger, and Williams in Clancy. Now it seems like these two have known each other their entire lives. They work extremely well with each other, and are a pleasant pair for their entire team to be around. “I like Shaniah a lot,” commented Williams on the teammate she spends almost all of practice with every day. “I like that we can push each other.” Their first season with their new team included indoor lung and their outdoor season will probably bless them with rain, snow, sunburns, and wind burns. “I definitely like outdoor better because it is more in my comfort zone,” commented Schwend. Her teammate Williams agrees with her that the atmosphere of outdoor is exhilarating. The outdoor track atmosphere is not something that can be replicated, even in a top notch indoor facility. www.msubsports.com | @MSUBXCTF | 2016-17 MSUB Track & Field Media Guide | 7
CHASING RECORDS Schwend started her outdoor season by breaking the school record in the triple jump. A feat that she is proud of because she has not been competing in that event very long and it was her personal best jump. However, this humble athlete just laughed when asked about her feelings on the record, noting that she had no doubt that Williams would take the record at their next meet. Williams did not disappoint. With the help of Schwend and assistant track coach Jonathan Woehl, Williams was able to make a jump of 36 feet, 6.75 inches, securing the record for that week. Her next track meet, Williams was able to capture the win in the triple jump. “I actually scratched two of my six jumps, and I felt really good on those jumps,” noted Williams. During the middle of competing in triple jump, Williams had to also run in the 4x100 meter relay, and the 100 meter hurdles. If her teammate would not have broken the record two weeks ago, Schwend would have done it again herself with her jump of 35 feet, 0.5 inches. Coach Woehl has had both jumpers focusing on a lot of technical portions of their jumping during the outdoor season, which seems to be literally propelling the young women forward as they continue to cover more ground and improve. “The stuff that coach has been having us focus on has really made a difference,” Williams noted. Williams and Schwend both found a love for competing at a young age. Schwend’s parents, Tara and Wes, were her coaches for a lot of the sports she was involved in growing up. They were even her track coaches during high school. “I pretty much grew up in the gym since my parents were coaches for everything,” reminisces Schwend. “Ever since around first grade I didn’t go to the last day of school because I would always be going with my parents to the state track meet with the high school teams.” Schwend’s parents were both athletes growing up. Her dad even competed in high jump for a time at Montana State University in Bozeman. Williams attributes her love of track to her coaches that she had growing up. However, her parents definitely play a big part in her athletics, even if they weren’t her actual coaches. “My cross country coach in sixth grade got me first into running, but all my coaches have helped me continue to love the sport,” Williams noted while she thought about all the wonderful individuals that pushed her to where she is now.

“My brother, Logan, was also a runner,” said Williams. “I always wanted to be like Logan. He ran so I wanted to run too. My parents have always pushed me and expected good things from me, but they never forced me into anything. They have been the most supportive people that I have ever had in my life.” Williams even remembered her mom’s initial worry that she would not really get involved in athletics, so she had her try out piano and drama. Williams was not always a jumper and sprinter. “I actually started out as a long distance runner,” remembered Williams. “I did cross country and the mile my freshman year of high school.” Each year after that her coaches continued to change around the events Williams competed in. She started doing triple jump, long jump, and the hurdles. The two athletes may have different backgrounds and previous experiences, but their love for their families and a close proximity to home led them to attend MSUB. “I really like being close to my family, which is important to me,” commented Schwend. The freshman seems to be flourishing in her new surroundings both academically and athletically. Schwend plans to earn her degree in elementary education. “When I was a senior I was an aid for a kindergarten class at my school, and at that point I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do, but I really enjoyed the experience,” stated Schwend about how she chose her major. “I like that MSUB is smaller,” noted Williams on one of her reasons for choosing to attend MSUB. “Also with the track program, you get out what you put in, so athletics don’t completely consume all of my time, but they are still a competitive environment.” Williams is also an elementary education major, however, she does like the idea of possibly joining the occupational therapy program or going to veterinarian school upon graduating from MSUB. “One of my biggest sacrifices that I have made for track is probably food,” laughed Williams on the dietary restrictions associated with full-day track meets. Small comments like these help Williams keep her teammates smiling, and the pressure of being a collegiate athlete and full-time student a little more fun for all. COMING BACK STRONG Schwend’s sophomore and junior years attending and competing for Bridger High School were plagued with knee pain, bench time, and surgeries. She first tore her ACL and her meniscus in her knee her sophomore year while playing basketball. She missed her following track, volleyball, and basketball seasons while receiving surgery and going through rehab. She tried to get back into the swing of things again with volleyball her junior year, but fate was not so kind. “On the second day of practice I knew something was not right, so I went to the doctor who said I was fine,” remembered Schwend. “I just sat out for a month then tried playing again, which led the doctor to performing an exploratory surgery and he found out that I had torn my ACL again.” The ACL’s purpose is to prevent movement of the tibia off the femur and the hyperextension of the knee. In a lot of cases a person can continue a normal life if they tear their ACL, but for an athlete it leads to surgery and a couple months of recovery. Schwend opted for her second surgery on her knee so she once again missed her basketball and track seasons. “I kept going because of the fact that I only got two years of high school track, so I really wanted to make up for that,” Schwend commented when asked why she continued to pursue athletics after multiple injuries.

Schwend has a humble personality that has been built from her hard work, and the injuries that she has had to deal with. “I love her personality,” commented Williams. “She’s fun to be around. Even if we have a bad day at a meet or practice, she can still have fun.” In Schwend’s last meet she was able to jump 17 feet, 9 inches in the long jump, which is around a foot farther than her previous best and about three inches from the school record. After the meet Williams seemed almost more excited about Schwend’s personal best jump, than her own first-place finish in the triple jump. “I like that she doesn’t always come across as competitive, but she really is,” said Woehl. The first semester as a freshman trying to do both athletics and academics can be a learning curve, but both Williams and Schwend seem to be adjusting well to both. “I think I should have pushed my goals further during indoor, but with it being the first semester I was still figuring everything out. I’m not disappointed, but I could have done better,” said Williams. However, Schwend’s first season as a collegiate athlete had its hardships and successes. “I had a few family deaths during indoor so I was pretty out of myself. It was rough, but my teammates were awesome and everyone was really supportive which helped me through everything,” said Schwend gratefully. Williams also credits her teammates with helping her get out of her ‘funk,’ as she calls it, when she has a bad jump or race. “Janessa is really consistent when she is competing, even when she doesn’t have her best day ever,” remarked Woehl. SETTING A NEW JUMPING STANDARD One of the meets that Schwend and Williams competed in was the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Championships in Nampa, Idaho this past February. “I had a blast, even though my marks were not what they should have been,” said Williams. “It was interesting.” “It wasn’t what I was expecting,” commented Schwend. “In high school a lot of people come to watch, but I felt like at conference it was just the other teams and a couple parents in the stands. The competition is crazy too.” Coach Woehl had only promising things to say about the duo. “I like Shaniah because she seems to pick things up pretty quickly,” noted Woehl. “When I explain a new concept, at first she’ll say that she doesn’t really understand what I am saying, but she’ll go out there and do exactly what I asked of her. I love working with her.” While Williams is unique in her dual-role of sprinter and jumper, she uses the two as counterbalances to clear her mind between events. “If I have a bad jump, all I want to do is a 400. I just want to have a gut race. But if I do well in jumping I don’t necessarily want to run that,” comments Williams when asked about the possibility of her joining a 400-meter hurdle race sometime during her track career.
10 | 2016-17 MSUB Track & Field Media Guide | @MSUBXCTF | www.msubsports.com
“Janessa is very coachable,” said Woehl. “With triple jump recently, we have been letting the ground come to her, rather than being impatient and straight legged.” Woehl noted that Williams had never really worked on anything as technical as that before, but she was able to really embrace all the new aspects of the triple jump. “It seems to be working for her,” Woehl commented on his athlete’s progress. “I’m hoping to see her jump in the 38-feet range in the next couple years in triple jump.” Schwend and Williams not only want to improve in between their jumps and races, but during all of their seasons. “I have my personal goals,” comments Williams on the specific times and jumps that she wants to achieve. “I want to focus on the 100-meter hurdles, and my relays since those are with my team.” Williams has competed in the triple jump, long jump, 100m hurdles, 200m dash, 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay, and the distance medley relay since joining the Yellowjacket family. Schwend has some goals of her own. “My goal is to just continue improving. I’m still not where I want to be in long jump so I want to do better in that.” She plans to try out high jump during one of her outdoor seasons as a Yellowjacket, which she did not do during her first indoor season. She will also be competing in the 200m, the 4x100m and 4x400m relays, as well as triple and long jump during this outdoor season. “Before indoor I had never run a 400 before, or a relay like the 4x400, but it was a cool new experience,” said Schwend. Athletics build character, responsibility, time management, work ethic, but most of all it builds friendships. Jesse Owens, a four-time track and field Olympic gold medalist once stated, “Friendships born on the field of athletic strife are the real gold of competition. Awards become corroded, friends gather no dust.” Williams and Schwend have formed a friendship through their mutual love of athletics. But long after they are done competing they will still have the friendship that they built through the time that they represented the yellow and blue of the Yellowjacket track and field family.

Yellowjacket AD Krista Montague Krista (Fjelstad) Montague is entering her 14th year of employment at MSU Billings and her fourth as director of intercollegiate athletics in 2016-17. Montague led the athletic department’s 240-plus student-athletes to another successful year on the playing field and in the classroom in 2015-16, as the cumulative grade point average surpassed 3.0 and 48 individuals earned academic all-conference honors. Montague will also serve as a mentor for the NCAA Division II Athletic Directors Association Mentoring Program starting in the 2016-17 academic year. In 2014-15, MSUB hosted several marquee championship events for the first time ever. In November, MSUB welcomed the 2014 NCAA Division II Cross Country West Region Championships to Billings, which included participation from 32 teams across the region. MSUB also hosted the 2014-15 GNAC Basketball Championships and the 2015 GNAC Baseball Championships during the academic year. MSUB’s softball team advanced to the NCAA Division II West Region Championship game after winning the GNAC Championships title, and the Yellowjackets’ baseball team also claimed a conference title during 2014-15. During her first year at the helm of the athletic department, Montague successfully secured hosting responsibilities for the upcoming 2014 NCAA cross country west regional championships and 2014-15 Great Northwest Athletic Conference men’s and women’s basketball championships. Montague began her employment with MSUB in July of 2002 as the department’s development and marketing director. Shortly after being hired, she was appointed to the position of senior woman administrator, making her the highest-ranking female administrator in the athletic department. When Montana State University Billings announced the hiring of Montague as its new athletic director on May 10, 2013, it became the first NCAA institution in Montana to have a female athletic director. In 2005, the titles of assistant AD and NCAA compliance coordinator were added to her duties, while she still managed the corporate partnership program and special events for the department. In 2009, Montague was promoted to associate AD. As associate AD, her primary responsibilities included overseeing and managing NCAA II compliance for each of the 17 sports and co-ed cheer, as well serving as a crucial member of the athletics administration team and academic liaison between the different campus constituencies and athletics. Montague, a native of Eastern Montana, received her undergraduate degree in business administration with an option in marketing in 1999 from MSU Billings. Montague was a four-year letterwinner for the MSUB women’s basketball team and left the program with the school record for career free-throw percentage. As a senior, Montague helped MSU Billings to the West Region Championship and the program's first and only Elite Eight appearance in women’s basketball. Montague is a member of NACDA (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) and NACWAA (National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators), as well as various other state and local organizations. In 201112, she served on NACWAA’s Legislation & Governance Committee, and also served as a member of the NCAA II Softball West Regional Advisory Committee in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011. Before joining the MSU Billings athletic staff full time, Montague was the athletic department’s part-time corporate partnership director and held various positions for DD Marketing (Pueblo, Colo.), Norwest Bank, and Billings Clinic. Montague recently completed a master's degree in public relations at MSU Billings. She lives in West Billings with her husband Brent and two daughters Shayla (14) and Allie (12). 12 | 2016-17 MSUB Track & Field Media Guide | @MSUBXCTF | www.msubsports.com
Head Coach Dave Coppock 28th Season Dave Coppock is entering his 28th season as head coach of both Yellowjacket cross-country teams and is entering his eighth as the MSUB track and field head coach since the program returned during the 20082009 season. Coppock coached seniors Della Lyle and Robert Peterson to the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in 2015-16, where Lyle became the first female All-American in MSUB’s track & field history. Under Coppock’s guidance, Peterson also competed in the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, after reclaiming his title as the GNAC Mile Champion and helping MSUB’s distance medley relay team to the GNAC indoor title as well. A former cross-country and track runner at the University of Northern Iowa and University of Montana, Coppock has produced 32 all-conference (track & field) and five NCAA all-region runners in cross-country. He has coached 17 NCAA DII National Track & Field Championships provisional qualifiers with two automatic qualifiers and two NCAA appearances. From his track and field teams, he has produced 10 champions. He has also had multiple NCAA DII all-region track performers, including Lyle and Peterson last season. In distance running, Coppock has coached two former cross-country runners (Sarah Graves and Heidi Reider Schuette) who became U.S. Olympic marathon trials qualifiers. Under Coppock’s guidance in 2014-15, junior Robert Peterson became the first-ever Yellowjacket to earn a spot in the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships. He also earned USTFCCCA All-American honors after finishing 10th in the mile at the 2015 Indoor Championships. The Yellowjackets also hosted the 2014 NCAA Division II Cross Country West Region Championships at Amend Park in Billings in Nov., 2014. More than 30 teams from across the region competed in the event, which will be held at the same course again during the 2016 season. In 2013-14, under Coach Coppock’s direction, the men’s and women’s track and field teams produced a record number of all-conference and GNAC champions. At the GNAC Indoor Championships, sophomore Robert Peterson ran a meet record in the men’s 1500m to win the conference title. At the GNAC Outdoor Championships, it was senior Chase Robinson who took the men’s 1500 title, with Peterson .37 second behind. Corrie Holm was a conference champion for the women’s track and field team. She won the conference title at the GNAC Outdoor Championships in the women’s discus. In 2006, the Yellowjacket women won the Heartland Conference Championships and four men and women were named to the all-conference teams. The 2006 women were also ranked as high as 10th in the NCAA South Central Region. His teams over the years have placed as high as second in the Pacific West Conference (twice) and fifth in the NCAA West Region. Under Coppock’s guidance, the Yellowjackets have also been ranked as high as No. 16 in the nation. In addition to the success Coppock’s teams have had on the course, they have also been among the most successful teams in the nation in the classroom. Both the women’s and men’s programs have perennially been named to the NCAA Division II Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic teams and have maintained one of the highest team grade point averages in the nation. A 1979 graduate of Montana with a degree in geology, Coppock still runs competitively. He was named the 2006 Heartland Conference Women’s Coach of the Year and has been named the Montana USATF Road Racer of the Year two times.

In his only season with the ‘Jackets, Winter steadily improved his performances during his senior year. Winter’s highest finish was fifth at the Yellowjacket Invitational in 25:55.18, and it was one of three top-10 finishes on the year. Winter placed 29th at the GNAC Championships in 26:21.40, and placed 56th at the NCAA west region championships in 31:36.59. Prior to his career at MSUB, Winter ran cross country and track and field for three years as a Grizzly at the University of Montana. Bolt helped Skyview’s men’s cross country team finish in third place at the state meet in the same year. In the 10 years prior to that they had not finished higher than eighth.

Preview: MSUB Men’s Indoor Track & Field BILLINGS, Mont. – The 2016-17 MSUB men's track and field team is set to begin competition on Saturday, Dec. 3, in Spearfish, S.D., at the Yellow Jacket Holiday Classic. The Montana State University Billings squad has 29 student-athletes on the roster with several record-holders returning to the team. The Yellowjackets placed eighth last year at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Championships with 30 points. With the loss of All-American and GNAC champion Robert Peterson, the Yellowjackets will need to make up the team's points in other events. Peterson, a multi-champion for MSUB, was a two-time indoor champion in the mile and last year anchored the Yellowjackets to a win in the Distance Medley Relay. "Robert was a great champion for our program," MSUB head coach Dave Coppock said. "With his loss, we will need to find our points elsewhere. I haven't seen anyone emerge yet in a single event as the high level Robert was at. But, we have potential on our team for several athletes to step-up." Three of the four members of the MSUB DMR team are returning this year. Seniors Josh Panasuk, Liam McKay, and Landon Polkow, were all members of the team that finished with the upset victory at last year's conference championship. "It looks like we have a pretty well-balanced team coming into the season," Coppock said. "Our distance runners had a good cross country season this fall and should continue to perform well during the indoor season. We're a lot stronger in the short sprints this year with Sam and Kaelen leading the way. Our long sprints look good too, with Landon and Nate in the 400 meters. Austin could potentially be one of the top hurdlers in the conference and his brother Marcus along with Chuck should be able to step up immediately in the GNAC." After a standout season on the cross country team, junior Jorey Egeland looks poised to make an impact for the team. The product of Billings Senior High School was a top finisher for the 'Jackets and while will be focusing on the 3,000 meters, could earn a spot on the relay teams as well. In the sprints, Sam Zook holds the MSUB record in the 60 meters at 7.05 and Nate Vanderby in the 400 meters at 50.84. Sophomore Kaelen Shay had a good year in his first season competing in the GNAC.

Senior Austin Lindquist is a joint record holder in the 60 meter hurdles for MSUB. He is joined this season by his brother Marcus who will be competing in the jumps. From Bozeman, Mont., Chuck Carr will also be competing in the jumps for MSUB. The 6-foot-4 freshman is joining the 'Jackets with a personal-best 6'5" mark in the high jump, just one inch short of the long-time record held by Mark Halland from 1972. "Our throws look strong as well, with Brady in the shot and Nels in the weight throw," Coppock said. "Beau is back this year after an injury last year and should be a big help in the shot and weight. We will miss Robert Peterson this year, especially when you look at how many points he accounted for at conference, but I think we can step-up to the challenge and balance our scoring across a wider range of events." Nels Flanagan and Brady Ostermiller will lead the Yellowjackets in the throws. Flanagan is the MSUB record-holder in the 35-LB weight throw (52'2.75"). Ostermiller placed fifth last season at the GNAC indoor championships in the shot put, earning four points for MSUB with a mark of 47'-5.25". Beau Peaslee is joining the team as a freshman after redshirting last season with an injury. MSU Billings has five meets on the schedule before the conference championships. The team begins the indoor season at Black Hills State with the Holiday Open. The team then has over a month off from competition before the Montana State Open in Bozeman, Mont., on Jan. 13. The ‘Jackets return to Spearfish, S.D., for the Dave Little Alumni Mile on Jan. 21, followed by a meet in Gillette, Wyo., Feb. 3-4, and the Mountain State Games in Idaho, Feb. 10-11. The GNAC Indoor Championships hosted by Northwest Nazarene are Feb. 17-18 in Nampa, Idaho.

Preview: MSUB Women’s Indoor Track & Field BILLINGS, Mont. – A very young MSUB women's track and field roster is ready to begin the 2016-17 indoor season at the Yellow Jacket Holiday Classic at Black Hills State on Saturday, Dec. 3. With just two upperclassmen on the roster, the team is going to be an inexperienced, but talented group of contenders. Last season, transfer Della Lyle became the first All-American for the Montana State University Billings women's track and field team. A native of Buffalo, Wyo., Lyle competed for the University of Redlands, but had one year of track and field eligibility left and she made the most of her time in a Yellowjacket uniform. The distance runner holds the MSUB record in every individual event she competed in, and was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. At the conference indoor championships last year, Lyle was fourth in the 5,000 meters (17:41.12) and eighth in the 3,000 meters (10:07.26). "We are really going to miss Della this season," MSUB head coach Dave Coppock said. "She made a big impact on our program and was instrumental at the conference meet. We are going to have to make up that ground in a variety of events." Last season, MSU Billings finished 10th at the indoor conference championships with 11 points. Senior Rio Frame returns to the team for her final season as a Yellowjacket. Along with Lyle, Frame was a member of the Distance Medley Relay team that placed seventh at the conference championships. Like Frame, junior Bailey Bomar is transitioning from the cross country season. The sophomore class will be led by Janessa Williams, Shaniah Schwend, and Josey Smiedala. Williams was a member of the women's DMR team that earned points at last year's conference championship. She and Williams traded records in the jumps during the outdoor season, and with a year of competition under their belts will be a factor for team points this year. "All three of our sophomores are record-holders at MSUB," Coppock said. "They have been leaders for the team in the preseason, and have the potential to make the finals at the conference championships."

The incoming freshmen will compete in a variety of events for MSUB. After the fall season of training, Coach Coppock sees a lot of possibilities for the first-year competitors to have an impact. "Michaela Johnson in the sprints and hurdles and Jewlz Collins had a good preseason. In the jumps, Halie Warren and Jamie Orme will be competing alongside Janessa and Shaniah. With so many newcomers, we will know more after the opening weekend of competition against other D2 schools." MSU Billings has five meets on the schedule before the conference championships. The team begins the indoor season at Black Hills State with the Holiday Open. The team then has over a month off from competition before the Montana State Open in Bozeman, Mont., on Jan. 13. The 'Jackets return to Spearfish, S.D., for the Dave Little Alumni Mile on Jan. 21, followed by a meet in Gillette, Wyo., Feb. 3-4, and the Mountain State Games in Idaho, Feb. 10-11. 2015-16 Season Review: Broken Records, All-American Highlight MSUB Women’s Track & Field Season BILLINGS, Mont. – Eight school records were broken at MSU Billings and one student-athlete broke through into the national spotlight during the 2015-16 women's track and field season. Five seniors led the Yellowjacket squad through the history-making year at Montana State University Billings and none was more influential than transfer Della Lyle. A native of Buffalo, Wyo., the 6-foot-one graduate student joined the 'Jacket team for her final season of athletic eligibility after competing for the University of Redland in California during her undergraduate campaign. Lyle worked her way through the school record book, crushing five school records and obliterating the time in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. After provisionally qualifying for the national meet in three events: 5,000 meters, 10,000 meters, and the steeplechase, Lyle was selected for the steeplechase to the Division II Nationals in Bradenton, Fla. During the opening heat, the senior clocked-in a time of 10:26.88, finishing fifth and qualifying for the national title race with the 11th fastest time. That time is the fourth fastest in Great Northwest Athletic Conference history, and set a new standard at MSUB. With her advancement into the finals, Lyle became the first Yellowjacket women's track athlete to compete for a NCAA Division II national title. In the finals, Lyle placed ninth in 10:33.17, just one spot off the podium, becoming the first MSUB women's track All-American with a Second-Team finish. "Della had a major impact on the women's team and was our highest scorer for both GNAC indoor and outdoor championships," MSUB head coach Dave Coppock said. "Prior to transferring to MSUB, she had some really good distance marks, and by the time she finished her season here, she had improved significantly in all the distances, so I'm satisfied we were able to do as much as we could to help her succeed. It was a huge thrill for all of us that she made the NCAA Championships as well as becoming our first female All-American." Lyle was clutch for the Yellowjackets throughout the indoor and outdoor season. The distance runner collected numerous titles and accolades as a one-year competitor. She was a GNAC Athlete of the Week Apr. 4-10 for her dual-titles in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and the 5,000 meters at the Bauer Invitational. She not only broke, but shattered five individual school records and recorded the fourth-fastest time in GNAC history in the steeplechase. Finishing with seven points during the indoor conference championships and 10 points for MSUB during the outdoor conference championships, Lyle earned both the GNAC Indoor Female Newcomer of the Year and the GNAC Outdoor Female Newcomer of the Year honor. She was named USTFCCCA all-west region during the outdoor season by being ranked in the top-5 in the west region in the steeplechase. www.msubsports.com | @MSUBXCTF | 2016-17 MSUB Track & Field Media Guide | 97
A tremendous student in the classroom, Lyle was also named a GNAC all-academic team selection for both indoor and outdoor and was recently announced as a CoSIDA Division II Academic All-District 8 Track & Field/Cross Country Team honoree. Pursuing her master's degree in psychology, Lyle has a cumulative grade point average of 4.00, and is eligible for the Academic All-America team to be announced in late June. On the track, Lyle kicked-off her commanding season with a win in the 5,000 meters and early record at the Yellow Jacket Holiday Open. In January, Lyle competed in the 3,000 meters, setting another early-season record. Lyle continued to drop her times, ultimately pulling through at the conference championships. She scored six individual points for MSUB finishing fourth in the women's 5,000 meters, shattering the MSUB school record with a finish of 17:41.12. On Day 2, Lyle placed eighth in the women's 3,000 meter race smashing another MSUB record with a season's best time of 10:07.26. She was also a member of the women's Distance Medley Relay team that placed seventh for two more points. During the GNAC Outdoor Championships, Lyle posted all 10 points for the Yellowjacket women's team. Setting two more MSUB records, she was the runner-up in the steeplechase and placed seventh in the 5,000 meters. As a top-3 finisher in the steeplechase, Lyle earned an all-conference result as the 2015-16 Senior Jinise Trueblood. only women's Yellowjacket athlete this year to achieve that feat. Helping Lyle lead the team were five upperclassmen. Blair Street and Jinise Trueblood were four-year members of the MSUB women's track and field team. Street finished her Yellowjacket career with a personal-best time in the outdoor 200 meters at the Montana Open in 26.09. She qualified for both the GNAC indoor and outdoor championships in multiple events with her highest-finish a 10th place result in the 100 meters in 12.96. Street leaves MSUB a member of the 400 meter relay team that set the school record in 2015 of 49.33. She was an academic all-conference honoree this season and was named the Female Student-Athlete Advisory Committee award winner at the Buzzie Awards. Trueblood was a dual-competitor in both cross country and track. A tremendous student, the six-time academic all-conference honoree graduated this spring with a 3.99 cumulative grade point average in health and human performance and joined Lyle as a CoSIDA Division II Academic All-District 8 Track & Field/Cross Country Team honoree this season. She placed 16th during the GNAC Indoor Championships in the 5,000 meters in 20:39.72 and had a season-best time in the outdoor 5,000 meters at the Montana Open in 20:20.66. Taylor Condon was also a member of the academic all-conference team. A transfer from Black Hills State University and like Trueblood, also competed for the cross country team. The elementary education major was a member of the 4x800 meter relay team that won the event at the Yellowjacket/Battlin' Bears Open in her hometown of Laurel, Mont., in 11:36.97. Completing a sweep, Brielle Davis was also named a member of the GNAC all-academic team as all five of this year's MSUB seniors earned a place on the all-conference list. Coming off a highly competitive cross country season, Davis finished her track career in style. She placed fourth in the 1,500 meters in a personal-best time of 5:11.04. At the Tom Gage Open, Davis turned-in a personal best 12:24.41 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. “We are really going to miss our seniors, especially after we’ve spent so much time together training, traveling and competing,” Coppock said. “They’re all been through highs and lows during their time here, but when they look back, I think they’ll have some great memories. They’re all good students and it will be great to see what they do beyond graduation.”

The lone junior on the squad, Frame battled a nagging injury that she nursed during the fall cross country season. The sixth member of the MSUB GNAC all-academic team, Frame posted a season-best 10:40.00 in the 3,000 meters at the GNAC Indoor Championships for a 19th place finish. The sophomore class had two athletes in track athlete Bailey Bomar and pole vaulter Amanda Nichols. In her first year of eligibility, Bomar was named to the GNAC all-academic team with a 3.30 cumulative grade point average in psychology. Qualifying for the GNAC Indoor Championships, Bomar placed 15th in the 5,000 meters in 20:02.21. Primarily a distance competitor her freshman season, Bomar expanded her outdoor repertoire with the 800 and 1500 meters. She turned-in a time of 5:29.08 in the 1500 meters and 2:43.14 in the 800 meters at the Montana Open. Building on her success from last season, Nichols placed sixth at the GNAC Indoor Championships at height of 10-2.50 meters in the pole vault and completed a season-high 10-6.0 meters at the Mountain State Games. Competing for the first time was the largest class in nine freshmen: Sarah Beatty, Becky Gerst, Bessie Gondwe, Cate Klaudt, Devin McDonald, Shaniah Schwend, Josey Smiedala, Nikki Terkildsen, and Janessa Williams. Storming through their opening collegiate season was the trio of Smiedala, Schwend, and Williams. All three qualified for the Indoor and Outdoor GNAC Championships in their inaugural year as a Yellowjacket. Smiedala set two school records in the indoor 400 meters with a time of 59.29 and the outdoor 400 meters in 59.04. She won the 400 meters at the Dave Little Alumni Mile and placed 14th at the GNAC Outdoor Championships in the 800 meters in 2:21.83. Schwend and Williams both competed in the jumps and on the relay teams together while Schwend added the 200 meters and Williams the hurdles. At the Montana State Open in March, Schwend broke the MSUB outdoor triple jump record with a distance of 34 feet and 1.25 inches. Surpassing that just a week later, Williams landed a jump of 36 feet and 6.75 inches at the Carroll College Open. Both women continued to improve their times and jumps throughout the season. Schwend placed 11th in the triple jump at the GNAC Outdoor Championships in 34 feet and 3 inches and 12th in the long jump in 16 feet and 0.25 inches. Williams competed in five events during the indoor conference championships and three events during the outdoor conference championships for the most from a Yellowjacket this year. A multi-event competitor, Williams posted a top-time of 28.17 in the 200 meters and 9.77 in the 60 meter hurdles during the indoor season. Outdoors, Williams continued her success in the jumps and hurdles. She was 13th in the triple jump at the GNAC Indoor Championships in 33 feet and 10.75 inches. "We are really proud of this group of freshmen, who all had broken the previous records in their respective events," Coppock commented. "Shaniah and Janessa alternated breaking the MSUB triple jump record, ultimately setting a new mark by nearly three feet. Josey has a great future in the 400 and 800 as well." Beatty, Gondwe, Klaudt, McDonald, and Terkildsen competed for MSUB on the track. Beatty posted a top-10 time in the mile during the Yellow Jacket Holiday Open in eighth place in 6:26.94. A sprinter, Gondwe, dropped her times throughout the year. She finished with a top time in the 200 meters of 28.59 and 1:05.81 in the 400 meters. Klaudt showed her range competing in the 800 meters up to the 5,000 meters. She had a top time in the 800 meters of 2:50.75 and 5:48.46 in the 1500 meters. McDonald posted a time of 2:42.76 in the 800 meters and was a member of the relay teams. Terkildsen ran 6:29.18 in the mile and 1:24.91 in the 400 meters. Gerst was the lone female member of the field team this season. She set both of her personal-bests during the opening meet of the season at the Yellow Jacket Holiday Open of 42 feet and 7 inches in the weight throw, and 28 feet and 3.5 inches in the shot put. She redshirted the outdoor season. "We had a particularly small squad this season, but had some great individual performances, highlighted by a trip to the NCAA National Championships and eight new school records," Coppock said. "We, of course, lose some talented seniors, but we have a very strong core group returning and our largest-ever recruiting class coming in for the 2016-17 season. We're really excited to see where the team takes us next year."

Season Review: Yellowjackets Continue Success in 2015-16 Men’s Track & Field BILLINGS, Mont. – The MSUB men's track and field team set seven school records and senior Robert Peterson qualified for the NCAA Division II national meet for the second consecutive year during the 2015-16 season. Building on their success from last year's history-making season, the Yellowjackets continued their momentum by capitalizing on experience for improved all-around performances on the track and in the field events. Punching his ticket twice to the national championships this year, Peterson qualified for both the indoor and outdoor Division II national meets. He competed in the mile during the 2016 NCAA Division II National Indoor Championships in Kansas, and the 3,000 meter steeplechase during the 2016 NCAA Division II National Outdoor Championships held in Florida. Peterson began his senior campaign in the indoor season with a win in the 5,000 meters at the Montana State University Open in 15:18.80. At the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, Peterson competed in four events, coming away with three all-conference finishes. On Day 1 during the Distance Medley Relay, Peterson was handed the baton on the final leg for the Yellowjackets in fifth place. Surging to the front on the last lap, Peterson completed a comeback from 60 meters behind to overtake the leader, earning the conference title and an MSUB school record in 10:06.41. He ran a 4:07 mile on the anchor leg to cross the finish line in first and pick-up his opening all-GNAC finish of the season. On Day 2, Peterson won the mile in a photo-finish and set a meet record at the line in 4:10.13. He followed that up with a third-place result in the 3,000 meters for his third all-GNAC finish of the meet in 8:33.39. Needing to lower his time in the mile to have a chance at a place at Nationals, Peterson travelled to the SPU Final Qualifier the following week, placing third in the men's mile in 4:07.67, lowering his MSUB school record in the event and finishing with the 12th fastest time in the nation. That time would hold up as Peterson was selected for the NCAA Division II national indoor meet for the second time in his career. During the preliminary round at the national event hosted by Pittsburg State, Peterson finished in eighth place in 4:09.15, 14th among the 17 challengers, missing the cut to the title race by three seconds. Overall, Peterson bettered his time from last year at the national championships when he placed 10th in an All-American finish with a time of 4:11.29. During the outdoor season, Peterson added the steeplechase to his storied career at Montana State University Billings. Competing in the event just twice before the GNAC Outdoor Championships, Peterson found a niche in the 3,000 meter steeplechase – a discipline that combines a long distance race with an obstacle course. 100 | 2016-17 MSUB Track & Field Media Guide | @MSUBXCTF | www.msubsports.com
At the Bauer Invitational on Apr. 9, Peterson finished the runner-up, and just three seconds behind the eventual national champion, freshman Jonah Theisen from Black Hills State. Two weeks later at the Montana Open, Peterson dropped his time by 15 seconds. At the GNAC Outdoor Championships, Peterson won the conference title in 8:59.23, almost 45 seconds faster than the first time he competed in the event. That time was the ninth fastest in the country among D2 athletes, and qualified Peterson for the national outdoor meet. Although the native of Billings, Mont., had competed twice before at the indoor national event, 2016 was the first time he had advanced to the national outdoor championships. In Bradenton, Fla., during the first heat, Peterson finished the 3,000 meter steeplechase sixth in 9:12.45. He finished 13th in the two heats, just one spot out of the finals race. "I was really happy for Robert to have such a great senior season and close out his career on such a high note," MSUB head coach Dave Coppock said. "We had a great time at outdoor nationals and it was a chance to enjoy the experience and reflect back on the past five years." Peterson concluded his career at MSUB an eight-time all-conference winner. He was a 3-time individual event champion, a member of the DMR championship relay team, a 2-time runner-up, and placed third twice. He was a 3-time GNAC Male Track Athlete of the Week (Feb. 24-Mar. 2, 2014, Jan. 12-18, 2015, and Apr. 15-May 1, 2016). Peterson holds the fourth-fastest time in the GNAC in the indoor mile in 4:07.67 and the fourth-fastest time in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 8:59.23. Peterson is also the first and only male MSUB track All-American with his 10th place finish at the national meet in the 2015 indoor mile. He finishes his career with six individual track records at MSUB and is a member of two relay team record-holding performances. Since the inception of the MSUB end-of-the-year student-athlete awards show the Buzzies, Peterson has totaled 13 nominations with seven wins, including a twotime MSUB Male Athlete of the Year honoree. "Robert has set the standard of where we want our program to go in the near future," Coppock stated. "We've got that Nationals experience now and we need to set the bar higher. I think the rest of the team has moved-up as well and can see where hard work can get them. Robert really bought-in early on in his college career to the type of training I think is necessary to get up to that National level. It's great to see that Robert's school records are now at a National level and should stand for some time. However, records are made to be broken and they'll provide some incentive for future athletes here at MSUB to attain." Joining Peterson as upperclassmen on the team was senior Cameron Stanek and juniors Austin Lindquist, Garrett Love, Jacob Marshall, Josh Panasuk, Landon Polkow, and Nate Vanderby. Stanek was a three-year competitor for the Yellowjacket track and field team. He contended in 17 different events throughout the indoor and outdoor seasons. This year, he competed in both the GNAC Indoor and Outdoor Championships. At the indoor championships, Stanek finished 13th in the 200 meters in 22.91. At the outdoor championships, he was a member of both the seventh-place 4x100 relay team (43.90) and the eighth-place 4x400 relay team (3:28.73). He ran a personal-best in the 400 meters at the Tom Gage Open in 51.71. Stanek is a member of the MSUB record-holding 1600 meter relay team from 2015 that finished in 3:21.60. He is also a two-time academic all-conference honoree. “Cameron did a great job for us over the years,” Coppock said on the team’s second senior. “He was really a utility player, if you could call it that, in that he could perform well in a lot of events. He especially helped us out in the long sprints and both relays, so we’ll definitely miss his versatility. We’re also really proud of how Cameron performed in the classroom, earning numerous academic awards as well.” From the junior class, this year MSUB acquired outdoor school records from Lindquist in the 110 meter hurdles and Polkow in the 400 meter hurdles. Lindquist completed personal-bests across the board during the outdoor season. He ran 15.13 in the 110 hurdles at the Carroll College Open for the MSU Billings school record, breaking a 1979 time from Dan Hagerman of 15.44. At the MSUB-hosted Yellowjacket/Battlin’ Bears Open, Lindquist won the long jump with a leap of 23 feet and 0.75 inches to lead the GNAC for the best mark in the conference. At the GNAC Outdoor Championships, Lindquist placed 13th in the long jump at a distance of 21 feet and 6 inches, and eighth in the 110 hurdles in 16.09. www.msubsports.com | @MSUBXCTF | 2016-17 MSUB Track & Field Media Guide | 101
"Austin and Landon have really established themselves as competitive hurdlers in the GNAC," Coppock said. "Austin made the finals at this year's outdoor championships and Landon would have been in the running if not for a pretty serious injury near the end of the season which kept him out of the Championship meet. We'll have both of them back next year and I know they're motivated to perform at the top of the GNAC or even hit an NCAA qualifying mark." Panasuk ran the first leg of the DMR team that won the conference championship title. The native of Butte, Mont., competed in the indoor season and redshirted the outdoor. During his time on the track, Panasuk ran personal-bests in the mile and the 3,000 meters. At the GNAC Indoor Championships, Panasuk placed ninth in the mile, just one spot of the out points in 4:21.66. Panasuk won the 3,000 meters at the Mountain State Games in 8:51.44. He will compete for MSUB next year on the cross country and track and field teams. Love and Marshall will also have one year left in both sports as Yellowjackets. At the GNAC Indoor Championship, Love finished with dual personal-bests. He placed 11th in the 5,000 meters in 15:33.56 and 18th in the 3,000 meters in 8:58.02. Competing in the long distance events of 5,000 and 10,000 meters during the outdoor season, Love had several first and second place finishes. At the GNAC Outdoor Championships, Love finished 11th in the 10,000 meters in another personal-best 33:07.77. Like Panasuk, Marshall competed in just the indoor season. He completed personal-best marks in the mile in 5:08.23 and in the 3,000 meters in 9:56.50.
2015-16 Senior Robert Peterson.
Vanderby is the sixth member of the junior MSUB roster. He competed in just the outdoor season this year. He ran a season's best mark in the 400 meters at the Trudnowski Open in 49.61. At the GNAC Outdoor Championships, Vanderby placed 13th in the 400 meters in 50.48. "Our juniors returning next year will provide the core of our distance and long sprints group," Coppock said. "They are all good leaders on the team and are already training hard this summer." Sophomore Liam McKay was the fourth member of the DMR team that took first-place at the GNAC Indoor Championships. McKay ran the third leg, the 800 meters, passing the baton to Peterson. During the outdoor season, McKay had three top-10 finishes. He ran a personal-best 1:58.62 in the 800 meters at the Montana Open. Jorey Egeland posted a standout sophomore campaign as a Yellowjacket. The dual-sport athlete improved his times in all events this year, and put individual points on the board for MSUB during the conference championships. At the GNAC Indoor Championships, Egeland placed 10th in the 3,000 meters in 8:49.93. At the start of the outdoor season, he won the 5,000 meters at the Montana State Open in 15:53.97. During the GNAC Outdoor Championships, Egeland ran personal-bests in the 5,000 meters, placing 14th in 15:22.54 and placed eighth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 9:41.73. Cole Campbell and Nels Flanagan competed in field events for MSUB. Campbell, a pole vault competitor from Hardin, Mont., matched his personal-best at the Mountain State Games, clearing a height of 14 feet and 5.25 inches. At the GNAC Indoor Championships, he placed ninth at the height of 14 feet and 2.5 inches. Flanagan competes in the throws for the Yellowjackets. He threw a mark of 52 feet and 2.75 inches in the 35-LB weight throw at the Montana State Open for the MSUB record. During the outdoor season, Flanagan competed in the discus, hammer, and javelin. He won the Carroll College Open discus with a personal-best mark of 152 feet and nine inches and finished with a throw of 153 feet and two inches in the hammer throw at the Bauer Invitational. At the GNAC Outdoor Championships, Flanagan placed ninth in the javelin at 164 feet and three inches, and 14th in the hammer throw in 143 feet and four inches. 102 | 2016-17 MSUB Track & Field Media Guide | @MSUBXCTF | www.msubsports.com
"Our sophomores had a great year and still have some developing to do," Coppock said. "They were all scorers in the GNAC championships and I expect them to keep moving up in the standings." From the freshman class, Tyus Mendoza and Ivan Colmenero are dual-athletes on the cross country and track and field teams. Mendoza posted a time of 16:07.30 for 16th place at the GNAC Indoor Championships. He competed in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the GNAC Outdoor Championships, finishing 12th in 9:59.82. Colmenero ran 9:13.93 at the GNAC Indoor Championships in the 3,000 meters for 24th place and 16:07.30 in the 5,000 meters for 15th. He ran a season-best 15:51.73 in the 5,000 meters at the outdoor Montana Open. Brady Ostermiller, a thrower from Shepherd, Mont., scored points for the Yellowjackets at both the indoor and outdoor conference championships. During the GNAC Indoor Championships, Ostermiller placed fifth in the shot put at 14.46 meters. At the GNAC Outdoor Championships, he finished sixth in the shot put with a throw of 14.60 meters and 15th in the discus at distance of 72.72 meters. Quincy Wittman and Kaelen Shay competed for MSUB at both conference championships. Wittman competed in the jumps, hurdles, and throws. At the GNAC Indoor Championships, he placed 11th in the 60 meter hurdles in 9.09. At the outdoor championships, he placed 15th in the 110 hurdles in 17.84, 16th in the triple jump at 37 feet and 5.75 inches, and 18th in the hammer throw at 132 feet and 9 inches. Shay, a sprinter and product of Billings Senior High School, placed 16th in both the 60 meters (7.29) and the 200 meters (23.71) at the GNAC Indoor Championships. At the outdoor championships, he posted times of 11.55 in the 100 meters for 17th place and 23.51 in the 200 meters for 18th place. "Our freshmen did great this year and show a lot of potential to excel in the GNAC," Coppock said. "Brady, especially had a good opening season with placing at GNAC, both indoors and outdoors in the shot. Tyus and Ivan progressed very well in the distances and Kaelen was a real surprise in the sprints. Kaelen was a walk-on who worked very hard and got himself qualified for the conference championships so I see a bright future for him." "We had a good, solid season with a relatively small squad compared to the rest of the GNAC and to come away with some individual conference champions, all-conference finishes and an NCAA National qualifier really made it a special season for us," Coppock stated. "Although we're losing a couple of key seniors, we'll have a good core group returning as well as bringing in some talented recruits. We still have a fairly young team, so I see a lot of upside potential for next year." The Yellowjackets placed four student-athletes on the academic all-conference team. Stanek, Panasuk, McKay, and Egeland were all honored with the nod for earning a cumulative grade point average above 3.2 and in at least their second year of competition at MSU Billings.
