BILLINGS, Mont. – After 10 days and eight matches on the road, the MSUB volleyball is ready to kick off their home season with two conference matches. The Yellowjackets are opening Great Northwest Athletic Conference action with matches against Central Washington on Thursday, Sept. 17 and Northwest Nazarene on Saturday, Sept. 19. “The first two tournaments were really good for us to point out what we need to work on,” MSUB head coach Lisa Axel said. “With so many newcomers it took some time for us to make sure we were all firing on the same cylinders, but I thought by the end of our second tournament we were really playing the best that I have seen us play so far this season.” In the first two weeks of competition junior outside hitter Ashlynn Ward and freshman Taylor Albertson are both hitting .243 for the Yellowjackets. Ward leads the team with 94 total kills and a 2.94 average per set. Another freshman, Miranda McConnell, is averaging 2.14 kills per set for second on the squad. This week we are focusing on serve receive and being able to put ourselves in a situation where we can use all of our hitters. We need to be able to run a balanced offense and I think that is going to help us be successful.” Thursday, September 17, 7:00 p.m. Alterowitz Gymnasium Opponent: Central Washington University 2015 Record: 5-3, 1-0 GNAC Head Coach: Mario Andaya (20th season) 2014 Record: 19-8, 12-6 GNAC Last season, Central Washington finished with a 19-8 overall record, advancing to the NCAA west region tournament hosted by Northwest Nazarene, but lost out in the first round to BYU-Hawaii 3-1.
