BILLINGS, Mont. – After a win in Alaska last week, MSUB came back to its home court pushing No. 15 Western Washington to extra points, but it was the Vikings that held on late in the sets for the 3-0 (25-23, 27-25, 25-17) win in Alterowitz. MSU Billings (2-11, 1-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) didn’t look like a team with a 1-3 conference record coming into the match Thursday night. The Yellowjackets pushed the nationally-ranked Vikings all the way through the night, exchanging rallies point-for-point, forcing WWU to dig deep.
There were 25 ties in the match and seven lead changes during the conference contest. The Vikings held a .277-.189 advantage in hitting, but MSUB out-dug WWU 63-59. The two teams tied in total blocks at six. “I am so proud of our team effort tonight,” MSUB head coach Lisa Axel said. “Western Washington is a great program, but I think this was the best team effort I have seen from the players this season. It was a complete team effort from everybody on the court and we really competed well through every point.” Ashlynn Ward set the tone for the match leading all players with 19 kills on a .333 attack percentage (19-5-42). The junior outside hitter came up clutch for the team several times with her swing and at the net with the block. “Ashlynn had another great night,” Axel continued. “Also, our defense really stepped up and tonight we were giving ourselves second and third chances at the ball. Our players were making tremendous gets, giving the ball to Kyndal, allowing her to spread the sets out evenly. People were taking some big swings off the shots they had and putting the ball away. Taylor Sherman and Kimmy Kirk did a great job on defense leading the team with 15 digs each.” Sherman and Taylor Albertson both struck six kills. Ward and Audri Marrs tied with four blocks. Williams ended with a match-high 33 assists and in her fourth double-double of the season added 13 digs. Five Yellowjackets finished with six or more digs in the match.
