About Yellowjacket Athletics Home of the Yellowjackets, the Montana State University Billings department of intercollegiate athletics supports 15 men’s and women’s varsity sports which compete in the NCAA at the Division II level. MSUB is one of 11 fulltime members of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, which features 11 championships throughout each academic year. More than 250 student-athletes compete on MSUB’s teams, and members of Yellowjacket teams posted a collective 3.15 grade point average during the 2014-15 academic year. MSUB-sponsored varsity sports include men’s and women’s teams in basketball, cheer/stunt, cross-country, golf, soccer, indoor and outdoor track & field, as well as baseball, softball, and women’s volleyball. 2014-15 marked a historic year for Yellowjacket Athletics, as MSUB hosted three conference championship events and an NCAA Division II West Region Championship for the first time ever. The ‘Jackets welcomed more than 30 teams to Billings on Nov. 22, 2014 for the NCAA Division II West Region Championships at Amend Park, hosted the 2014-15 Men’s and Women’s GNAC Basketball Championships from March 4-7, 2015 at Alterowitz Gym, and capped off the year by hosting the 2015 GNAC Baseball Championships from May 7-8 at Dehler Park. MSUB also serves as the host of the largest NCAA Division II softball tournament, the Desert Stinger Classic, which was played for the sixth year in a row from Feb. 12-14, 2015 at Majestic Park in Las Vegas. The 2014-15 year also featured three All-American athletes from MSUB, including senior Kayleen Goggins (women’s basketball), junior Robert Peterson (men’s indoor track & field), and senior Brody Miller (baseball). Miller was also selected as the 2014-15 GNAC Male Athlete of the Year for all sports, just the second baseball player in the conference’s history to win the award, and the second student-athlete from MSUB to collect the honor as he joined women’s basketball star Bobbi Knudsen (2013-14). Capturing GNAC crowns during the 2014-15 year were MSUB’s baseball and softball teams. The Yellowjackets won the 2015 GNAC Softball Championships and advanced all the way to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II West Region Championships in May.

About Yellowjacket Athletics MSUB’s women’s soccer team also competed for a GNAC Championship title, finishing in second place in the conference standings and earning the No. 2 seed into the conference tournament in the fall of 2014. In men’s golf, senior Jake Hedge also represented the ‘Jackets at the NCAA Regional level, competing as an individual in the championships in Monterey Bay, Calif., from May 6-8, 2015. In 2013-14, the MSUB women’s basketball team made history by winning the 2013-14 Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular season title and advancing to the NCAA Division II west regional championship game. MSUB’s 2013-14 women’s basketball team joined the Yellowjackets’ 1998-99 squad as the only two in program history to advance to the NCAA regional title game. The latter continued on to the Elite Eight, marking the furthest-advancing MSUB team in the school’s history. In 2012, the MSUB softball team won the GNAC regular season title with a 32-18 overall record and earned hosting privileges for the 2013 conference softball tournament. The 2012 Yellowjacket men’s basketball team also earned a conference title, defeating the University of Alaska Anchorage 74-70 in the GNAC tournament championship game. Formerly known as Eastern Montana College, MSUB athletics stem back to the 1927-28 season, the year in which the university was founded. The Yellowjackets have competed in a number of different conferences throughout the years, and prior to the 1980-81 season the athletic department transitioned from the NAIA to competing at the NCAA Division II level. The MSUB Hall of Fame and Distinction inducted its inaugural class in 1990 and serves as a tribute towards influential figures on and off the court, in both current and retired sports.

Community Service Throughout the 2014-15 academic year, the MSUB volleyball team spent time in the local Billings community. From preparing meals at the local Ronald McDonald House to reading to students at Highland Park Elementary School, the Yellowjackets recognized the importance of giving back to the community and will continue to support MSUB’s community service and engagement initiatives throughout the 2015-16 season.

Yellowjacket Athletic Director Krista Montague Krista (Fjelstad) Montague is entering her 13th year of employment at MSU Billings and her third as director of intercollegiate athletics. In 2014-15, MSUB hosted several marquee championship events for the first time ever. In November, MSUB welcomed the 2014 NCAA Division II Cross Country West Region Championships to Billings, which included participation from 32 teams across the region. MSUB also hosted the 2014-15 GNAC Basketball Championships and the 2015 GNAC Baseball Championships during the academic year. MSUB’s softball team advanced to the NCAA Division II West Region Championship game after winning the GNAC Championships title, and the Yellowjackets’ baseball team also claimed a conference title during 2014-15. During her first year at the helm of the athletic department, Montague successfully secured hosting responsibilities for the upcoming 2014 NCAA cross country west regional championships and 2014-15 Great Northwest Athletic Conference men’s and women’s basketball championships. Montague began her employment with MSUB in July of 2002 as the department’s development and marketing director. Shortly after being hired, she was appointed to the position of senior woman administrator, making her the highest-ranking female administrator in the athletic department. When Montana State University Billings announced the hiring of Montague as its new athletic director on May 10, 2013, it became the first NCAA institution in Montana to have a female athletic director. In 2005, the titles of assistant AD and NCAA compliance coordinator were added to her duties, while she still managed the corporate partnership program and special events for the department. In 2009, Montague was promoted to associate AD. As associate AD, her primary responsibilities included overseeing and managing NCAA II compliance for each of the 17 sports and co-ed cheer, as well serving as a crucial member of the athletics administration team and academic liaison between the different campus constituencies and athletics. Montague, a native of Eastern Montana, received her undergraduate degree in business administration with an option in marketing in 1999 from MSU Billings. Montague was a four-year letterwinner for the MSUB women’s basketball team and left the program with the school record for career free-throw percentage. As a senior, Montague helped MSU Billings to the West Region Championship and the program's first and only Elite Eight appearance in women’s basketball. Montague is a member of NACDA (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) and NACWAA (National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators), as well as various other state and local organizations. In 2011-12, she served on NACWAA’s Legislation & Governance Committee, and also served as a member of the NCAA II Softball West Regional Advisory Committee in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011. Before joining the MSU Billings athletic staff full time, Montague was the athletic department’s part-time corporate partnership director and held various positions for DD Marketing (Pueblo, Colo.), Norwest Bank, and Billings Clinic. Montague is currently pursuing a master's degree in public relations at MSU Billings. She lives in West Billings with her husband Brent and two daughters Shayla (14) and Allie (12). 8 | @MSUBVB | www.msubsports.com | #MSUBVB | 2015 Media Guide

Assistant Coach Lianne Vicchio 1st season
Lianne Vicchio was raised in Orangevale, Calif., eventually attending Bella Vista High School in Fair Oaks, Calif. On the volleyball team, she was an outside hitter and four-year letter winner for the Broncos. She was an all-league and all-state selection. Vicchio went on to play volleyball at NCAA Division II Cal State Stanislaus under head coach Christina Lore. At Stanislaus, Vicchio finished her career in the Top-5 in kills in the conference and kills per set. She was an all-conference first-team selection twice in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, and a conference NCAA Player of the Week. She currently holds the all-time record for overall kills and kills per set at Stanislaus, and was the team leader and captain for two years. After earning her undergraduate degree in 2011, Vicchio was tapped by Coach Lore as an assistant coach for the program. She spent the next two years aiding the Warriors and was essential in everyday coaching and recruiting. In June of 2014, Vicchio was hired as an assistant coach at Division I Montana State University in Bozeman, Mont. She spent one season with the Bobcats and the Big Sky Conference. After eight month at MSU, Vicchio is looking forward to starting her career as a Yellowjacket. “I am comfortable with Montana. I have a sister here now, and I am looking forward to going back to D2. After being at a D1 school and coming back, and I have learned a lot and will be able to put that knowledge to good use.” When asked about the opportunities at MSUB, Vicchio responded with an affinity for the program and an alignment of interests with the established coach and players. “When I had the chance to come here and meet with people, I really clicked with Lisa. I liked her vision of where the program is going, and I believe I can support and develop that.” “The mentoring aspect to coaching is very important to me,” Vicchio continued. “I want to make an impact in every aspect of the program at MSUB. I also want to work in community relations and outreach. I want to bring awareness of what a good program MSUB has, and how good the players and staff really are.” Recruiting will take center stage for Vicchio as she begins her time with MSU Billings. The newest member of the MSUB athletic department, Vicchio started today in practice and leaves for a recruiting trip this weekend. “I want to thank MSUB athletic director Krista Montague and Coach Axel for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the Yellowjacket family,” Vicchio said. “I am excited to begin, and can’t wait to start work this spring in preparation for a successful season ahead.” @MSUBVB | www.msubsports.com | #MSUBVB | 2015 Media Guide | 11

Feature Story: Ashlynn Ward & Mataia Roderick
The queens of Rexburg October 17, 2014 On the court inside Alterowitz Gym on the main MSUB campus is where Ashlynn Ward and Mataia Roderick play volleyball together now, but it’s not the first time they’ve shared the floor. MSUB SPORTS – “Ok ladies, go ahead! One for eight.” It’s the call of the floor official at least a half dozen times per game when the Montana State University Billings volleyball squad is in action, but it’s one that holds a much deeper meaning than simply a substitution for the Yellowjackets. The well-rehearsed cadence signifies sophomore outside hitter Ashlynn Ward and freshman defensive specialist Mataia Roderick exchanging places with one another, and more importantly, a friendship rooted more deeply than within volleyball. Ward and Roderick both graduated from Madison High School in Rexburg, Idaho, where the two developed into a formidable duo as complimentary players on the court honing their volleyball skills. The prior connection is a big reason why the two are finding immediate success at the collegiate level, and no one finds this more apparent than MSUB head coach Lisa Axel. “The fact that Mataia and Ashlynn have such a tight bond between them has really helped both of them feel comfortable on the court,” Axel said. “They are always cheering for the other when they make a big play, and I think the team feeds off of that.” @MSUBVB | www.msubsports.com | #MSUBVB | 2015 Media Guide | 13
Feature Story: Ashlynn Ward & Mataia Roderick Both players have emerged into starters for the ‘Jackets this season with Ward providing the team with a powerful option as a hitter and Roderick fostering MSUB’s defensive depth. Ward’s 2.25 kills per set is the second-highest total on the team, as is her total of 29 block assists so far in 2014. “Ashlynn has become someone that the team can count on in pressure situations to take a big swing for us,” Axel said. “She is very steady on the court and keeps the team focused during the match.” Roderick has been a weapon both defensively and while serving, as her 13 aces and 168 digs are both the second-most on the team. “Mataia has come in and done a nice job raising the bar for us defensively,” Axel said. “She is extremely quick and pursues every ball on defense. Mataia has also really improved her serve receive since we started in August.” The connection has turned out as good as Axel and the Yellowjackets could have hoped for, and with youth on their side the duo figures to be a key building block for the MSUB program over the next several seasons. Born and raised in Rexburg, Ward was shoehorned into a life of sports as she grew up with two older brothers and was always active as a kid. “I started playing club volleyball when I was in the fourth grade mainly just because it was something to do,” Ward recalled. “I played a little bit of basketball and soccer when I was younger, but I started to get more serious about volleyball when I got to junior high. I let go of the other sports then, and I’ve been playing volleyball ever since.” Middle school also marked decision time for Roderick, as she determined that the entirety of her athletic focus would be directed towards enhancing her skills on the court. “In seventh grade I narrowed it down to volleyball and track, but in high school I wanted to focus more on volleyball,” Roderick said. “I continued playing club ball in the offseason, and volleyball has always been something I wanted to continue with after high school.” Roderick’s college aspirations came to a screeching halt during a practice her senior season at Madison. “I had played one game of my senior year and we were doing hitting lines at the end of practice,” Roderick remembered. “I came down and fell when I landed, heard a pop and I just remember laying on the court bawling.” The anterior crucial ligament – emphasis on the middle word of the term – had given out in Roderick’s left knee, and she began the recovery from one of the most hindering injuries in the world of sports. “I had surgery a week later but at some times it was a really hard struggle, especially when I couldn’t walk,” Roderick recalled regarding the injury. “The whole time, my dad did my rehab and he helped me learn some patience. I knew I couldn’t do as much as I wanted to if I wanted to recover quickly, but I just felt like I needed to be on the court again.” Roderick’s father, Jeff, applied his expertise as a chiropractor towards getting his daughter back up to playing speed. After watching her high school team from the bench, Roderick returned to the floor five long months later. “Once I got to start playing again, it felt like all the hard work and tears were worth it,” Roderick said. “My family and my religion really helped me to stay strong and focus on the positive and never let myself get down.” While having the fortune to avoid an injury as serious as a torn ACL, Ward related to Roderick’s frustration as she has dealt with a chronically sprained ankle. “I have sprained it about three times and it just takes you out of it,” Ward said. “You just want to get back up and play as soon as you can, but you feel pretty restricted.”

Feature Story: Ashlynn Ward & Mataia Roderick
Despite the recurring injury to her ankle, the most difficult obstacle Ward has overcome throughout her career is a lack of confidence. “Within myself I’ve always had a difficulty of feeling like I’m not good enough and that nothing I ever do on the court will ever be enough,” said Ward. “Having my friends and family around me, they have always been really encouraging and supportive, and over time I have gotten better with myself. It’s nice to come into a college team where we are so family like, and I have 12 more sisters who never give up on one another.” Roderick, who stands at 5-foot-3, recalls facing similar insecurity as a younger player. “A lot of people told me that I was too short and that I’d never be able to play at the next level,” Roderick said. “When I tore my ACL I thought that my dream of playing college volleyball was shattered, but I didn’t want to give up. I pushed myself to return and play again.” With a roster of just 13 players, the bond that has developed between the Yellowjackets has proven to be unbreakable. The support of their teammates is a big reason why Ward and Roderick have already taken strides as young players within the program, and both explained how much they have learned about the game through playing with their peers. “I look up a lot to Monica Grimsrud, as we are very similar players,” Ward said regarding her fellow outside hitter. “She has taught me to just go in and get the job done, and that if you do it well things will get done faster and simpler. She has the mentality of not getting frustrated at anybody or herself. I like to carry that into how I play, but also into life as well. I try not to get stressed out ever really, and I don’t let things get so far into my head that it kills me.” Naturally, Roderick has always looked up to Ward as a mentor and a player to strive to be like despite the difference in position. “Since we started playing together my freshman year of high school, she has always been super nice, positive and relaxed on and off the court,” Roderick said. “She has helped me to be okay with everything, and if we have a bad point it’s always, ‘we will get the next one.’” “Both Mataia and Ashlynn are such team players,” Axel said. “They are always encouraging their teammates and a lot of times they get more excited for a teammate’s great play than their own great plays.” @MSUBVB | www.msubsports.com | #MSUBVB | 2015 Media Guide | 15
Feature Story: Ashlynn Ward & Mataia Roderick Axel’s comments are a testament to each of their personalities, which are fittingly as opposite as their positions on the court. “When I first met her she was quiet and shy, and I’m not a very quiet person,” Roderick said with a laugh as she recalled meeting Ward. “Once you get to know her she comes out of her shell and she is a character.” “I noticed her hair and her crazy, colorful designs on her spandex right away,” Ward remembered. “She had the shortest hair and I remember thinking, ‘this girl is a spark!’ She was nothing like me at all.” Since the two first teamed up on the junior varsity squad at Madison, Roderick has always played up onto Ward’s team as the two have remained side-by-side over the past five years. “We have had this connection, and people used to call us the ‘deadly duo,’” Ward said drawing a laugh from both players. “No matter where she was on the court she would throw it back and I’d get there. Having that bond on the court where she could trust me to put the ball away carried over into real life. We have a trustworthy friendship, she has gotten me out of my shell, and we have become very close.” “When we played together in high school I always knew that I could give her the ball, and I would do it any time we had a close game or a tight match,” Roderick said. “She was my go-to no matter where I was, we just had a connection.” Road trips during club volleyball further helped develop the bond between the two, as their antics and mannerisms began to draw more and more parallels. “Off the court we were always doing silly things,” said Roderick. “Once when I asked her what her middle name was, I thought she said ‘Roman,’ but she really said ‘Robin.’ We ended up calling one of our plays in high school Roman. We have grown together so much over the last few years, and I consider her to be one of my very best friends.” Ward and Roderick have grown into lifelong friends, and their connection is one representative of the Yellowjacket program as a whole. “This year the team is so close, and we all get along and have an incredible bond,” Ward said. “We really care about one another. To get back to the family aspect, those are your sisters out on the court and you would do anything for them. This year we are playing for each other and we just have a lot of heart.” “We all have the ability to play at such a high level,” Roderick said. “Playing in college is just so much more fun than any other level, because it is so fast and intense and you’re giving it your all in every game. When we are off the court we do so much together and I feel so comfortable with everyone on the team. To come to a new place I have never been and have 12 instant new friends I can do anything with is pretty special.” The unmistakable presence on the court that is comprised of Ward and Roderick has quickly emerged as a prime factor for MSUB this season. Each time Ward takes a powerful swing from the side, she is blasting away any lingering doubt that she was ever not good enough. Looking on in a crouched ready position is Roderick, sporting a bright yellow knee brace providing her with a daily reminder of what it means to never give up. The connection and friendship between the two is never more noticeable than when they converge, whether it be for a substitution or a postgame victory celebration. 16 | @MSUBVB | www.msubsports.com | #MSUBVB | 2015 Media Guide
Feature Story: Head Coach Lisa Axel
One step at a time: Yellowjackets’ Axel fueled by adventure August 7, 2015 MSUB SPORTS – One step at a time. By the time Montana State University Billings head volleyball coach Lisa Axel was 21 hours into her excursion at the Grand Canyon on May 24, those five words seemed to be the only constant in her life. Exhaustion was setting in, every muscle in her body pleading a more and more believable case that her next step would be her last. But giving in and settling for almost making it isn’t in Axel’s nature. She had expertly navigated 39.5 miles of rocky terrain, while experiencing an elevation change of more than 15,000 feet. With 7.5 miles and 4,350 feet upwards to go, Axel knew there was only one way out of one of the world’s most extravagant natural wonders. “There was a point where I thought I wouldn’t make it,” Axel said. With just over a mile separating her from the parking lot she had set off from 23 hours earlier, Axel had reached the final landmark of her adventure. Along with a water refill station, a 911-emergency phone was within Axel’s reach. @MSUBVB | www.msubsports.com | #MSUBVB | 2015 Media Guide | 17
Feature Story: Head Coach Lisa Axel The callbox captivated her gaze for awhile, her better judgment kicking off a heated debate with her competitive fire to finish what she had started unassisted. “I knew that wasn’t how I was going to get out of that canyon,” Axel said regarding the emergency phone. “I just kept going.” Just as she had politely ignored the warning sign to not hike from the south rim of the canyon to the river and back in one day, Axel declined what would be her final resource available and left the phone on the hook. Her knees now nudged their way to the front of the debate she was having with herself, loudly warning that if she did not begin moving forward again that they would lock up and drop her to the ground in her tracks.
R2R2R Axel had set out to achieve a daring feat, one referred to in the extreme adventure world as “Rim to Rim to Rim.” This excursion is not to be mistaken with the more readily found “Rim to Rim”, a challenge most commonly sought after by runners with the goal of trekking the canyon from top to bottom and back up again. The challenge Axel faced took it to the next level. Not only did she plan to hike from the south rim down to the canyon floor and back up to the north rim on the opposite side, but without missing a step she would turn around and double her trek all the way back to the south rim. Her timeline for completing the seemingly impossible journey: 24 hours.
18 | @MSUBVB | www.msubsports.com | #MSUBVB | 2015 Media Guide
Feature Story: Head Coach Lisa Axel “It is getting to be more popular with ultra runners, but they can do it a lot faster than I could have because they aren’t carrying anything,” Axel said regarding the emerging challenge now simply known as, ‘R2R2R’. “I set my goal as 24 hours as a hiker, and I started researching it. A lot of websites talked about how people do the south rim to the north, stay a night and then come back the next day. Not many hikers do the whole thing continuously.” Considering the hike covers 47 miles and more than 20,000 feet in elevation change, it is easy to see why Axel was hard-pressed to find many examples of hikers taking it on within a single day. Leading up to the monstrous task that lay ahead of her, Axel had to hike 50-60 miles per week while at the same time simulating drastic and sudden elevation changes. Expertly upping her mileage and then tapering off gradually as the date grew nearer, Axel felt that she was physically well-prepared for the grueling climb that lay ahead. A meticulously packed bag on her back, with the exact amount of calories she would need secured along with an extra change of clothes, Axel’s vision started turning into a reality. “The day we arrived the canyon was completely clouded in, and you could only see about 10 feet off of the can-
yon wall,” Axel commented. “It kept us for a day just thinking about what we were getting ourselves into.” Along with Axel were her friends Mira and Harsha, who planned to act as Axel’s support group throughout the journey. The duo planned to hike to the north rim in advance of Axel and stay the evening before joining up with her on the way back. With the thick overcast layer however, a small sense of uncertainty began to creep into the back of Axel’s mind. It was not the first time Axel had spent months preparing for such an adventure however, and in a way her latest challenge was driven by a near miss a year earlier. @MSUBVB | www.msubsports.com | #MSUBVB | 2015 Media Guide | 19
Feature Story: Head Coach Lisa Axel ICONIC ACONCAGUA, CONQUERING KILIMANJARO Less than 1,000 feet away from the summit of the tallest mountain outside of Asia, Axel was overcome with frustration. What had been a 16-day expedition and a climb of nearly 23,000 feet had come to a bitter end, as Axel helplessly sat just short of the crux of the mission. Nearly two weeks earlier, Axel and a group of ambitious climbers set out to scale Aconcagua, a mountain in Argentina identified as the highest point in the Southern Hemisphere. Before even reaching the first camp, three of the climbers were rescued via Medevac due to the intense conditions. Even after her fourth extensive surgery on her left foot, Axel was confident she was ready to take on what would be the highest ascent of her life. But as she battled through the incredible adversity and found herself on the cusp of achieving her goal, she was reminded of the frustration and helplessness that served as her original motivation to take on extreme mountain climbing. Growing up as a volleyball player, Axel soon emerged as a standout on the court and developed into a highly-touted college prospect. Hailing from Buffalo, Minn., Axel pursued her athletic career at Division I University of Minnesota, where she was a four-year starter and led the Golden Gophers to a Big Ten Championship in 2002. Her success as a player led her to pursue her current career path of coaching, however she admits that it was hard to spend any significant time away from the court when she competed at the top collegiate level. “I always loved the outdoors but I never had the opportunity to get into mountain climbing,” Axel said regarding her childhood and early adult life. “I played volleyball until my body said, ‘no,’ and then I had to find something else I could compete at. Climbing mountains was the only thing where I could push myself to my limit; where I could train and compete against myself.” Battling through back injuries related to her career as a volleyball player, Axel refused to accept the diagnosis of a doctor who suggested she shift to a less active lifestyle because of the degeneration in her back. “I went to get a second opinion and a couple of back surgeries later I was capable of getting into climbing,” Axel said. “There are more than 50 peaks in Colorado taller than 14,000 feet, and I have done 25 of them. My goal is to eventually do them all.” While Axel still has the 50-plus “14ers” in Colorado on her list, her competitive edge pushed her to seek out a bigger challenge. At times Axel’s recovery from back surgery was disheartening. She could barely muster the strength to lift herself out of bed, let alone take on a flight of stairs. But as she regained her strength little by little every day, she knew she needed an end goal in mind to work towards. “It couldn’t just be a mountain in the U.S.,” Axel said regarding her plans for a post-surgery adventure. “I needed something dangling in front of me to help get me through the recovery.” 20 | @MSUBVB | www.msubsports.com | #MSUBVB | 2015 Media Guide
Feature Story: Head Coach Lisa Axel In January of 2013, Axel rose to the top of Africa as she successfully navigated to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. The peak, famous for being the tallest free-standing mountain in the world, stands at 19,341 feet above sea level and became Axel’s first iconic notch in her adventure belt. “I wanted to do big mountains, but I didn’t really have the technical skills yet,” Axel said on her first thoughts of tackling Kilimanjaro. “That one is hard because of the altitude, but there wasn’t a big technical aspect to it.” Upon reaching the summit, Axel was reassured that all of the pain and grueling recovery she had gone through had been worth it. When she arrived in her hotel room after descending Kilimanjaro, Axel was already thinking about what was next.
I could get a little bit higher.”
“Aconcagua was higher and was one more step in the technical aspect,” said Axel. “It was an actual expedition. I had made it up 19,000 feet, but I wanted to see if
While Axel ultimately surpassed the 20,000-foot mark on her climb up the Argentinian giant, she couldn’t help but feel disappointed that she didn’t quite reach the peak. “I knew right away that I needed to do something and that I couldn’t wait two years,” Axel said. “I turned back to looking at what I could do in the U.S. that was extremely challenging and where I could push myself. As soon as I got back from Argentina I started researching the hardest hikes in the U.S. and that’s when I found the rim to rim to rim challenge. The Grand Canyon was one of the few places I had never been, and that combined with the challenge made me decide to do it.” ONE STEP AT A TIME “Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” – T. S. Elliot If Axel had learned anything from her two previous major excursions, it was that the success of the trip laid within the preparation and planning. Similar to the mindset she holds as head coach of the Yellowjackets, she figured that if the prep work had been done properly, then come gameday it was just a matter of execution. If there were ever a parallel between the volleyball court and the red dirt of the Grand Canyon however, it would be adapting to unforeseen circumstances and adjusting on the fly. Axel’s knees continued to fight her every step, each one suggesting she should have picked up the emergency phone when she had the chance a half hour earlier. Out the window was the plan to link up with her friends on the way back to the south rim, as it had taken Axel longer than expected to reach the other side and Mira and Harsha were unprepared to hike after sunset. @MSUBVB | www.msubsports.com | #MSUBVB | 2015 Media Guide | 21
Feature Story: Head Coach Lisa Axel Gone was the light from her headlamp, the last symbol of her will to continue flickering out. There was no chance of stopping to replace it, for her knees would have followed the lead of the headlamp’s batteries and finally run out of juice. Now it was just Axel, three miles separating her from achieving what had become her toughest challenge to date. As she battled onward, refusing to succumb to the terrain, she remembered the feeling of frustration she had battled to get to this point. The inability to step out of her hospital bed post-surgery. The heartbreak of coming impossibly close to the peak of Aconcagua before turning back. This story had to have a different ending. The more Axel’s body began shutting down, the more her brain became unresponsive. By her final steps, the lone thought occupying her mind was to lift her foot and put it in front of the other. “When I saw the sign reflecting off of my light, I was very confused,” Axel said. Though she was incapable of comprehending the sight of the lower parking area, Axel had arrived at her final destination. “The first thing I did was call my parents and tell them I made it and that I was safe,” Axel said. “I was in pretty bad shape, and everything was focused on what I had to do to get back to the hotel.” Axel’s friends were awaiting her arrival anxiously at the parking lot, and managed to safely get her back to their hotel. With the sense of achievement once again restored, Axel already has plans for the next adventure on her horizon. “I have been considering the seven volcanic summits, which are the highest volcanoes on each continent,” Axel said when asked about the details of her next excursion. “The one in South America is a couple hundred feet shorter than Aconcagua, and I think I will do that one first. I’d like to do it around Christmas of this year.” If nothing else, Axel has proven she is capable of achieving whatever she sets her mind to. Her competitive edge continues to shine through as she pushes herself to her limits, and there is no end in sight to her ambitious adventures. Whether scaling the world’s highest peaks, or working on her game plan for the Yellowjackets’ next match, Axel’s approach remains consistent: One step at a time.

2015 Season Preview
MSUB head coach Lisa Axel sees a lot of positives during the Yellowjacket preseason. With more new players than returning, this season will be a mesh of experienced ability combined with untested talent. BILLINGS, Mont. – Coming off a season where the team had the program’s best win in its history, the MSU Billings volleyball squad looks to a few new players to build on a key core base. The 2014 Yellowjacket volleyball program picked up some significant wins against conference opponents last season, including #11 Western Washington, and MSUB finished sixth overall in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with an 8-10 record, 13-14 overall. With 11 teams competing in the GNAC this year, the Yellowjackets were picked to finish ninth in the conference in the preseason coaches’ poll released Monday. Alaska Anchorage came out atop the poll with 92 points, edging out last year’s top-finishing team Northwest Nazarene which came in second with 85 points. “We need to be consistent,” MSUB head coach Lisa Axel said. “We had some huge wins last season and then we faltered during some matches. We were able to play at that high level, but it’s a hard conference. There are no off nights where you have an easy opponent; everybody is a tough opponent. We need to go into each match in battle mode every time we step out onto the court.” Anchoring the aggressive-minded Yellowjackets is four-year starter Kyndal Williams. The two-year captain has been the setter for MSUB her entire collegiate career, and is looking forward to stepping out onto the court for her last season in a Yellowjacket uniform.

“We have set pretty high goals for our team this season, but that is because we know we can achieve them,” Williams said. “We have a lot of talent and we like to set high goals because it is a way to challenge ourselves.” Williams, who earned GNAC honorable mention honors last season, finished her junior campaign third in the league in assists (10.54 per set). She is also currently third in career assists at MSUB with 2,997, 785 behind Yellowjacket Hall of Fame member Natalie Bills (2003-06). The senior leader is joined on the 2015 team by returning outside hitters Stormy Siemion (2.17 kills per set) and Ashlynn Ward (2.24 kills/set) as well as defensive specialists junior Kimmy Kirk (2.56 digs per set) and sophomore Mataia Roderick (2.48/digs per set). Ward is the team’s top returning offensive threat totaling 215 kills last season on a .210 attack percentage. The Rexburg, Idaho native finished last season 21st in hitting percentage and 22nd in kills per set in the conference. She and Siemion are the only two returning attackers at the net, but both are confident in their team’s ability to adjust to the newcomers. “It’s nice to have this preseason time to do team building exercises and I think everyone is starting to click really well together,” Siemion said on the team’s chemistry during the first week of practice. The Huntley Project product is a full-court player for the Yellowjackets, seeing action in almost every match her first two seasons with MSUB. Siemion finished last season with 113 kills and averaged 2.17 digs per set, 23rd in the GNAC. Joining Ward and Siemion this season at the net are three new middles in transfer Audri Marrs (Sr., 5’11”, Parker, CO – Metro State Denver) and freshmen Taylor Albertson (6’0”, St. Helens, OR) and Miranda McConnell (6’1”, Sandy, UT). Marrs played for one year at Metro State under then assistant coach Axel, and is transferring to MSUB for her final season of eligibility. 24 | @MSUBVB | www.msubsports.com | #MSUBVB | 2015 Media Guide
“She brings the experience factor,” Coach Axel remarked on her reunion with Marrs. “She is also mentoring our two new middles. Both Taylor and Miranda are extremely athletic, they are picking it up fairly quickly, but Audri has been a big help getting them adjusted.” With the loss of first-team all-GNAC selection Chelsey Walter, all three new players will need to step up and be prepared for the fast-paced schedule and style of play Coach Axel is looking for from her team. “The biggest question right now for our team is our middles,” Axel commented on the trio. “How fast we can get them firing on all cylinders is a process. The main thing is that they need to be able to block for us and be more offensive-minded, but give us some time. We will have people that will step up and do the job we need them to do.” On the right side this season is transfer Abbie Mikelson (Jr., 5’11”, Battle Mountain, NV – Feather River Community College). Joining Ward and Siemion on the outside, and vying for time in the back, is freshman Taylor Sherman (5’8”, Parker, CO). Mikelson comes to MSUB from a quality program that is coming off an undefeated conference championship season. She totaled 212 kills on a .222 hitting percentage and 50 block assists on a team overall record of 25-4. Sherman, like Siemion, is an all-court player putting up quality stats in both the offensive and defensive courts. “We have a lot of talent, even with a lot of new players,” Williams commented on the 2015 team. “We’ve set the tone of taking it one step at a time, but we’re here to work hard, and we want to start off the season really well.”
@MSUBVB | www.msubsports.com | #MSUBVB | 2015 Media Guide | 25
“We want our identity this year to be a team that works hard and plays unbelievable defense,” Coach Axel said. “We won’t let the ball drop on our side without an all-out effort and we will battle for every point. We have hitters who can take some big swings for us as long as we can put them in quality situations.” In the defensive court for the Yellowjackets are returners Kirk and Roderick. Both players saw significant time in the back court last season. Kirk saw action in 25 matches and Roderick played in all 27 matches last season as a freshman and was the most consistent server for MSUB. “Kimmy has the most experience in the back,” Axel said. “She does a really good job on defense and is a consistent passer. Mataia helps set the tone for the defense; she goes after every ball and has a great serve for us.” Rounding out the roster for the Yellowjackets this season is the final signee of the team - setter Mason Steel. The 5-foot-8 junior is a transfer from Utah State University Eastern. She spent two years as a setter for the Eagles and last season averaged 3.69 assists per set. “This group has such great team chemistry on and off the court,” Axel said. “This has already helped the team find its rhythm faster than in previous seasons. We have a tough road at the beginning of the season with two very difficult tournaments, but we are getting some nerves out of the way in a couple of preseason scrimmages before we head to California.” MSU Billings opens the season with an exhibition match against Rocky Mountain College on Sept. 1 in the Fortin Center. The ‘Jackets then hit the road for a two-week long stretch with the Route 92 Tournament in California Sept. 4-5, followed by the PacWest/GNAC Crossover event in Seattle Sept. 10-12. The opening home match for the Yellowjackets is Thursday, Sept. 17 against Central Washington at 7 p.m. All of MSUB's home contests and select road matches will feature live video streaming as well as live statistics, available via MSUB's Stretch Internet portal. Links to the live coverage can be found at msubsports.com. Asked what fans can expect from the 2015 ‘Jackets, Coach Axel responded with a very fun, aggressive-style team that gives its all for every point. “People will come in and see a team that’s going to work hard and is going to put on a great show for the fans in the stands. It is such a fun and exciting atmosphere that our players put on, we can’t wait to show people what we are capable of.”

Alterowitz Gymnasium Alterowitz Gymnasium, a 2,330 seat facility, is home to the Yellowjackets' men's basketball, women's basketball, and women's volleyball teams. The facility is part of the Physical Education building, which houses the athletic department offices, training room, team locker rooms, workout facilities, and classrooms. During the summer of 2011, the seating areas were given a face-lift with all-new stadium seating installed to give patrons a more comfortable way to watch home Yellowjacket athletic events. The venue is named after Dr. Harold “Shorty Alterowitz, who was inducted into the MSUB Hall of Fame in 1995 for his 40 years of leadership as a coach and athletic director. Alterowitz was a track, tennis, golf and basketball coach, assistant football coach, and AD from 1952-67. He has received numerous teaching awards and has been a frequent featured speaker at local, regional and national meetings. After his retirement, he founded the Eastern Montana College Forum for Excellence in 1986.
