Butte Central’s Emily St. John commits to MSUB women’s hoops

Emily St. John, a product of Butte Central High School, commits to MSUB to play women’s basketball in the fall of 2017.

BILLINGS, Mont. – Announcing the second addition to the Montana State University Billings women’s basketball team for the 2017-18 season on Wednesday, head coach Kevin Woodin welcomed Emily St. John of Butte Central High School as the latest letter of intent signing.

“I am very excited to have Emily St. John join our women’s basketball program next fall,” Woodin said. “She is an exceptional student-athlete and has the ability to play multiple perimeter positions. Emily had a tremendous senior season, state tournament, and career at Butte Central. I really like her work ethic and versatility, and I know she will have a positive impact on our team.”

St. John is a four-year letterwinner in both basketball and volleyball for the Maroons, and she also competed in softball and tennis for two seasons. She was a first-team all-state selection as a senior, and earned first-team all-conference

honors in her sophomore-through-senior years. As a junior in 2015-16, St. John helped Butte to the state title, and was a member of the second-place team as a sophomore and third-place team as a junior.

“I chose MSUB because of the family atmosphere surrounding the coaches and players, the winning program that MSUB has, and the well-rounded education I will receive,” said St. John. “I am excited and blessed to play at the next level and to be a Yellowjacket.”

Totaling 1,073 points in her four-year career as a starter, St. John averaged 15.2 points per game as a senior. She also had 175 steals and 245 assists in her prep career, and her personal-best in scoring was a 26-point game. During her team’s perfect 24-0 run in her junior year, St. John averaged 11.3 points, 5.2 assists, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game. The performance earned her co-MVP honors within her conference.

In volleyball, St. John was also an all-state player, and earned MVP of her conference both her junior and senior seasons.

In 2015-16, she led the Maroons’ spikers to a conference title, and a third-place finish at the state tournament.

St. John’s academic accolades are as impressive as her athletic achievements, as she was a four-time academic all-state selection in both basketball and volleyball.

The second recruit to join the ‘Jackets for next year, St. John will join Great Falls native Hannah Collins, who committed to MSUB during the early signing period in November.

The Yellowjackets went 8-20 overall and 5-15 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play during the 2016-17 season.
