MSUB’s women’s golf team is victorious over Rocky Mountain College in the match-play format Collegiate Cup running Thursday and Friday.

BILLINGS, Mont. – Picking up a victory in its first event of the 2015-16 season the Montana State University Billings women’s golf team defeated Rocky Mountain College in the Collegiate Cup, a match-play format event running Thursday at Pryor Creek Golf Club and Friday at Peter Yegen Golf Club.

“I am very pleased for our women,” commented MSUB head coach Shawn O’Brien. “We played fantastic for how young and inexperienced we are. This is a great start to the season, as we travel to Denver tomorrow to play in the RMAC #1 Golf Invitational. Rocky Mountain College has a great program, and it is a great experience for each student-athlete to play in this crosstown rivalry event.”

The Yellowjackets swept a four ball round on Day 1 and added four individual victories in singles play to take a lead, and the teams finished even with 4.5 points each on the second day of the event.

Freshman Shealyn Hafer won both of her singles matches, defeating Abigail Venzor of RMC up three with two to play on Day 1 and defeating the Battlin’ Bears’ Eryn Ellis by the same score on Day 2.

Anna DeMars also won both of her singles matchups, defeating Shea Cady up five with four to play at Pryor Creek and downing Venzor up three with two to play at Peter Yegen.

Playing at the No. 1 spot, Kortney McNeil defeated Nellie Enderby up four with two to play on the first day, before finishing even with RMC’s No. 1 Kyla Clancy on Day 2. The Yellowjackets’ Haley Shackelford also finished even with her Day 2 opponent, Enderby, after defeating McKenzie Webinger by one hole on Day 1.

On the alternate shot on Day 2, RMC took two of the three matchups to help finish even with MSUB overall on the day.

Clancy and Ellis teamed up to defeat Shackelford and Sammy Walter, while Webinger and Enderby beat MSUB’s McNeil and Hafer 3-2.

The Yellowjacket duo of Bailee Dexter and DeMars finished even with the Battlin’ Bears’ Makenzie Wasson and Venzor.

The event signaled the start of the year for both schools, with the Yellowjacket women capturing the first official Collegiate Cup title. Hafer was named St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Day for winning both of her singles matchups.

“I want to thank Domino’s for their commitment to our program, university and community,” said O’Brien. “Without their support, this event would not have happened. It was a first-class event that each student-athlete can take something positive from.”

Domino’s served as the sponsor for the Collegiate Cup, which began Wednesday evening with a banquet at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown Billings during which the pairings for the weekend were unveiled.

NEXT UP: MSUB heads to Denver for its first stroke-play event of the year, as the Yellowjackets will face regional competition at the RMAC No. 1 Golf Invitational hosted by Black Hills State University at Fox Hills Golf Club.
