Anna DeMars is tied for 12th after the first round at the Dixie State Invite, and the Yellowjackets are in ninth place as a team with a first-round score of 314. HURRICANE, Utah – Completing the first round of the Dixie State University Invitational Monday, the Montana State University Billings women’s golf team is currently in ninth place after shooting a 314 in the first of two rounds at Sand Hollow Golf Course Monday. “We hit the ball well today but our short game hindered us,” commented MSUB head coach Shawn O’Brien. “The field is very tight after the first round, therefore, if we play well tomorrow, we can move up the leaderboard.” Freshman Anna DeMars led the way for the ‘Jackets, as she is currently in a tie for 12th place after shooting a 76 in the opening round. Sophomore Bailee Dexter and freshman Kortney McNeil are close behind, shooting a 78 and a 79, respectively. Tied for 40th place after the first round is junior Haley Shackelford, who shot an 81 her first time through the course. Rounding out the field for the Yellowjackets is sophomore Sammy Walter, who is tied for 62nd place after a first-round 86.
Leading the team race among the field of 13 is Point Loma Nazarene University, which edged Cal State Monterey Bay by one stroke and shot a 302 in the first round. Individually, Alexis Hayes of Sonoma State University is leading the field after a 1-under-par 71. Fellow Great Northwest Athletic Conference school Western Washington University is also competing at the event, and is just four strokes ahead of MSUB in sixth place with a first-round score of 310. The third-place through ninth-place teams are separated by just nine total strokes at the event, with much room for movement in the second round coming up on Tuesday. DeMars earned St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Day honors for the ‘Jackets. Players will tee off on the final 18 holes on Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. --@MSUBSports | #JacketNation--
