Senior Della Lyle won the women’s 3,000 meters at the Yellow Jacket Holiday Open.

MSU Billings opens its season with a good first meet at the Yellow Jacket Holiday Open.

SPEARFISH, S.D – The MSUB women’s track and field team took a small squad of athletes to the Yellow Jacket Holiday Open hosted by Black Hills State University Saturday.

The Yellowjackets competed against entrants from Chadron State, South Dakota School of Mines, Gillette College, and host Black Hills State.

Highlights for MSUB included a win in the women’s 3,000 meters by transfer Della Lyle. The senior and St. Vincent Healthcare Athlete of the Meet, won the event in 10:43.98, more than 15 seconds ahead of her closest competitor.

Junior Rio Frame took second in the mile, crossing the finish line in 5:39.69. Senior Brielle Davis finished fourth in the women’s 800 meters, covering the distance in 2:32.38.

Freshman Janessa Williams placed fourth in the 200 meter dash at 28:17 with sophomore Brianna Gray just behind her at 28:43.

The team of Gray, Williams, Kaytlin Halle, and Josey Smiedala placed second in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:23.70.

In the field events, Becky Gerst opened her collegiate career with a third place showing in the shot put with a throw of 11.67 meters.

“This meet was a good chance for some of our younger competitors to get their feet wet in collegiate competition,” MSUB head coach Dave Coppock said. “Hopefully, they learned a lot and will put it to good use in their training over the holidays.”
