MSUB’s Athletic Department welcomes students from Sandstone Elementary School to campus on Monday to get an inside look at the university and interact with coaches and student-athletes. BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State University Billings athletic department continued its community engagement initiative Monday, welcoming students from Sandstone Elementary School for a field trip for the second year in-a-row on the main campus. “It’s always a breath of fresh air to welcome these young students onto our campus and introduce them to Yellowjacket Athletics,” said MSUB director of athletics Krista Montague. “It’s important to give back to our local community, as our student-athletes would not have the same opportunities without the support we receive from Billings. We are looking forward to working with these students in the future as the next generation of Yellowjackets.” Around 80 students toured the MSUB campus before breaking up into groups and working with Yellowjacket coaches and student-athletes at various stations around the Physical Education Building. Activities ranged from basketball in Alterowitz Gym to kickball on the softball field at Avitus Group Stadium.
Sandstone students were also introduced to MSUB’s rock climbing wall within the recreational activities department, and played soccer and volleyball in the lower gym. “Any time we can get local students on campus it benefits everybody,” said MSUB men’s basketball head coach Jamie Stevens. “It gives them the chance to see what a college is like, and gives us an opportunity to spend a few hours doing fun activities with the kids.” The event was part of MSUB’s continual community engagement and service that all athletic teams and student-athletes partake in during the course of their careers. In the 2015-16 season, MSUB student-athletes contributed more than 1,100 hours of community service within the local Billings community.
