Scott Retires after 31 Years cott Seltveit has been teaching at MSUM since 1989. He has successfully taught every CM course at one point in time. He led MSUM’s CM program to be the first ACCE accredited program in the state. He’s brought numerous student teams to competitions all over the nation. And he’s been our program’s leading advocate. Scott will be missed immensely! We wish him a happy and healthy retirement! If you’d like to send him a CONGRATULATIONS! – please email him at: seltveit@mnstate.edu Due to the circumstances we are in due to COVID, we are unable to schedule a gathering at this time. We are hoping that we will be able to celebrate next fall.
Changes due to COVID-19 ren’t we all tired of hearing about COVID-19? We’re hoping for things to get back to normal and be able to teach our courses face-to-face once again. After spring break in March, we were required to move all of our courses online. We had two weeks to prepare to do this, and overall, our program did well. We are hoping that in the fall everything will go back to “normal,” but we will also prepare for an all online delivery as well. We hope that COVID has had minimal impact on our industry partners and that you’ve remained healthy!

CM has Moved! any of you probably remember having most of your courses at MSUM in Hagen Hall. That changed fall 2019. Our department offices were moved to the second floor in the Center for Business. We no longer have any classrooms located on second floor Hagen, but classrooms and labs still remain on first floor Hagen. We also teach a few courses in the Center for Business. MSUM will be offering a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing starting fall 2020. The nursing program’s offices and classrooms will be located on second floor Hagen. We miss our old space, but overall, the transition has gone well. When you come to visit us, please remember to go to the Center for Business.
Pursuit Competition his is our third year participating in the Pursuit Competition hosted by Ryan Companies USA. In this competition students respond to an RFP. Design is complete, so a detailed schedule and estimate are part of the proposal. Hammar Construction (Lisa Breitenfield, Cole Hammargren, Drew Anderson, Caleb Puttonen, Brian Schoenborn, & Austin May) presented via WebEx to Ryan Company judges on April 30th and took second place! Congratulations seniors! Past MSUM teams: 2019 – St. Croix Construction – 2nd Place 2018 – Viking Construction – 1st Place

ASC Region 4 Student Competition his past October, we had 2 teams attend the student competition in Nebraska City, NE. We had a team compete in Commercial 1 Division and the Design/Build Division. Although neither teams placed, students had a good time and learned a lot.
Women in Construction Seminar enior CM student, Lisa Breitenfield, was nominated to attend Kiewit’s Women in Construction Leadership Seminar. She attended the seminar in February that was located in Omaha, Nebraska. Here is what Lisa (far right) had to say about her experience:
“The Kiewit Women in Construction & Engineering Leadership Seminar was a great opportunity to interact with women from all over the United States and Canada. It was exciting to hear about Kiewit as a company, get advice from the CEO of Kiewit and hear experiences from senior level female engineers. The experience was eye opening, and helped motivate me to finish my senior year and begin my career strongly. I appreciate the professional and personal development opportunity and am grateful Kiewit has made it possible for so many women in the construction industry to gather for this seminar.”

New Program Coordinator ith Scott retiring, we needed a new program coordinator. Scott and Norma didn’t leave much time between each of their retirements, but they sure did a great job mentoring these past years! Rachel Axness has been teaching in the CM program for 5 years and will take over as the Program Coordinator. John Green is the other CM faculty and we will also be replacing Scott’s position. Scott and Norma have left big shoes for us to fill, but we’re confident we will continue to provide a strong CM program. Please feel free to connect with our faculty:
