elcome to the December/January edition of Australian Tyre Dealer. It’s the time of year when many of us are considering packing the family into the car and heading off somewhere for a few days away. Invariably this means driving for a few hours, often in highway traffic and often with the air-conditioning working furiously to keep everyone cool in the oppressive summer heat. Keeping safe when heading off on the long drive is essential and it’s always worth making sure the car is in top shape. And that, of course, means making sure the tyres are in tip-top shape too. Inside, we take a look at the great holiday trip and the tips for keeping safe. The idea of ‘air free’ tyres has been around for a number of years, though their absence from our roads seems to indicate there is still work to be done. However, the tyre manufacturers continue to look at the possibilities, and continue to invest in research and development. Bridgestone recently showed off their new, improved, secondgeneration ‘air free’ concept tyre. With better load bearing ability and driving performance, the new tyre would seem to show that it’s just a matter of time until such a product reaches the driving masses. See the tyre on page 10. Another automotive innovation - one that is now traveling our roads - is the electric car. Over the past couple of years, Tesla Motors has become one of the industry’s most well-known, and popular, electric car brands and the company

has turned to manufacturer Continental, and a special version of its ContiSportContact5 tyre, to shod its ground breaking Model S car. News of yet another innovation crossed our desks this month - a tyre that changes colour when the temperature drops, delivering a warning when it’s time to change to winter tyres. Amazing. Pirelli has gone ‘back to the future’ for their 2014 calendar - back to 1986, in fact, unearthing an unused calendar photo shoot from renowned photographer Helmut Newton to grace the glossy pages of this year’s edition. For those of us old enough to remember the glory days of Duran Duran, torn jeans and Tom Cruise feeling ‘the need for speed’ in Top Gun, then the images for this calendar - complete with a Lambo and contemporary F1 race car - feel eerily nostalgic. Pirelli pop up again in our motorsport pages. The tyre provider to Formula One for the past three years, the amount of effort, and the number of tyres, required by the company to feed the hungry beast that is the premier four wheel racing championship is quite astounding. The company’s rundown of the numbers involved makes for mind-boggling reading on page 25. We also take a look at MotoGP, the V8 Supercars and the link up between Hankook Tyres and Football Federation Australia. Feel free to contact me if you have some news you’d like to share with the industry. Regards Jonathan Nash jonathann@mtaq.com.au

Kumho strengthens Daimler link

O

ne of the world’s most prestigious marques, Mercedes Benz, has turned to Kumho to supply comfortable, quiet and durable performance tyres as original equipment for the company’s new B-Class. The new Mercedes B-Class now comes equipped with 195/65 R15 size Kumho Ecsta HM KH31 tyres as standard. The HM KH31 is part of Kumho’s luxury performance range designed to provide excellent grip, sporty handling, and a quiet, comfortable ride. According to Kumho Tyre Australia national marketing and training manager, David Basha, the Ecsta HM is a tyre ideal for small to mid sized vehicles. “The Escta HM KH31 is an internationally acclaimed tyre that has been awarded a Good Design Award in Korea as well as being highly recommended by two of Europe’s largest motoring organisations,” said Mr Basha. “All round capabilities make the KH31 an ideal match for the Mercedes B Class.” 4

“Kumho currently supplies tyres to Mercedes Benz for the G Class SUV and Sprinter van.”

Kumho’s silica compound gives the KH31 the grip of a sports tyre while providing a smooth, comfortable and quiet ride around town and on the open road. The silica compound also gives the KH31 great handing qualities in the wet and aids in reducing aquaplaning. Four wide and deep circumferential grooves ensure the Ecsta HM maintains optimum contact with the road in even the wettest conditions and the asymmetrical tread directs water to the outside of the tyre so handling isn’t compromised. The tread design also features multi-pitched blocks to reduce road noise making the ride not just comfortable but quiet as well. Kumho currently supplies tyres to Mercedes Benz for the G Class SUV and Sprinter van. The KH31 is also original equipment on Holden’s mid sized Malibu CD. “Manufacturers turn to Kumho for durable and reliable tyres because of the extensive range of passenger, SUV, 4x4 and light commercial tyres the company offers providing a match for every application.”

RADAR TYRES CERTIFIED CARBON NEUTRAL

O

mni United has been certified as a Carbon Neutral company for its flagship brand, Radar Tires, accomplishing a goal set more than two years ago. Working with London-based, multinational professional services firm Ernst & Young, the achievement is the result of a twelve-month effort to measure the company’s Radar Tyres brands’ global carbon footprint, coupled with a multi-faceted approach to reach net zero carbon emissions. In addition to its commitment internally to driving sustainable business practices, Omni United has achieved its goal of net zero carbon emissions through supporting hydro energy green projects, spread across China. “We cannot transform the world alone, but want to be a role model and show that if a small company like ours can invest the time, effort, and resources necessary to make this change, then anyone can,” said G.S. Sareen, President and CEO of Omni United.

TYRE & TUBE ON OMNI UNITED’S RADAR

O

mni United has appointed Tyre & Tube Australia (TTA) as the official distributor for Radar Tyres in Australia. TTA is a national wholesale tyre company with seven warehouses across the country and since 1994 TTA has grown into one of the leading privately owned wholesale tyre distributors in Australia. TTA has been distributing Radar Tyres to their network of approximately 150 tyre dealers. “We are very optimistic that Radar Tyres, being declared as one of the first

Yokohama expands Thai test site T he Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., has completed an expansion of the Tyre Test Center of Asia, the company’s comprehensive proving ground in Thailand’s Rayong Province. The expansion adds four new test courses – a 2.5-kilometer dry-test course and a 1.5-kilometer wet-test course for handling tests, a skid pad, and a corner hydroplaning test road. The two handling test courses enable the testing of overall tyre performance and compatibility with specific vehicles under dry and wet road conditions, while the skid pad is used for testing tyre grip performance on wet roads. The corner hydroplaning road is used to test the overall water drainage performance of the tyre and its tread pattern. Expansion of the Thai proving ground enables Yokohama Rubber to conduct complete tests of its tyres’ handling and vibration performance. The Tyre Test Center of Asia opened in April 2009. The 1.69-million square meter site was initially equipped with a 4.1-kilometre high-speed track with a 1-kilometre straightaway enabling high-speed running tests of over 200 km/h, a multipurpose track covering approximately 100,000 square meters, a 4.2-kilometre

course that encircles the high-speed course and reproduces general road conditions in Asia, and a rough road course for testing tyre durability. The 1km multipurpose track enables testing tyre performance during high-speed lane changes while driving in a slalom pattern. It also is equipped with a wet-test course and a special course that enables evaluation of ride comfort and noise generation. Prior to the establishment of the Tyre Test Center of Asia, Yokohama Rubber’s testing was centered at

two proving grounds in Japan - the comprehensive tyre proving ground D-PARC and the specialized winter tyre proving ground T-MARY. After seeing a need for a larger facility to service its expanding global tyre business, Yokohama Rubber decided to establish a new tyre proving ground in Thailand, which has become Asia’s automotive capital. Thailand was also chosen because of its stable climate, which enables tyre evaluations under the same conditions throughout the year.

YOKOHAMA AND KUMHO SIGN UP TO TECHNOLOGY LINKS

T

he Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., and Kumho Tire Co. have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to start discussions relating to technology exchanges and a capital alliance premised on ‘cross-shareholdings’. A statement announcing the news explained that through technology exchanges, the two companies aim to increase their competitiveness in the global tyre market by sharing R&D 8

resources and making more effective use of them through joint research and development on tyres and related technologies. The two companies also plan to enter into a capital alliance based on cross-shareholdings. Yokohama Rubber and Kumho Tire will start discussions on the details of the alliance with the aim of signing a legally binding contract as early as possible. Kumho Tire recorded consolidated net sales of 4,070.6 billion won in fiscal

2012. The company has eight tyre plants in South Korea, China, and Vietnam and employs about 11,000 people. In fiscal 2012 (ended December 31, 2012), Yokohama Rubber recorded consolidated net sales of 559.7 billion yen, with tires accounting for 444.6 billion yen of the total. Yokohama Rubber operates 12 tyre plants in seven countries around the world and employs about 20,000 people globally.

MICHELIN AND TEREOS STRIKE SWEET DEAL

MG PARTNERS WITH GOODYEAR

T

yre manufacturer Michelin and Tereos, the world’s fourth-largest sugar producer, have signed an agreement to pool their skills to work on Michelin’s BioButterfly project. The BioButterfly project is an initiative of the tyre company to develop butadiene – an important industrial chemical used in the production of synthetic rubber – using biological sources such as biomass. The technology, it is hoped, will eventually lead to the production of low environmental-impact tyres. The two companies will create a structured chain to ensure the industrial transformation of agricultural raw materials and to secure the long-term supply of biomass on an industrial scale. “Tereos is pleased to work closely with Michelin on this promising project to develop new processes that are fully focused on innovation and sustainable development,” said Alexis Duval, chairman of Tereos’ supervisory board.

T

he MG name is slowly returning to the automotive family fold. After a number of years spent in the wilderness the British marque, now owned by China’s SAIC, released the MG6 sedan in 2011 and 2013 saw the emergence of that model’s smaller brother, the MG3 Supermini. Recently released in the UK, and mooted to be released in Australia soon, the media in Britain is reporting that the MG3 is to be run on Goodyear’s EfficientGrip Performance tyre in size 195/55R16 87V. Goodyear says this means the MG3 receives rubber that offers “low rolling resistance and excellent wet grip”, qualities that work well with the car’s stated

attributes – the new MG3 is pitched as “an economical and environmentally friendly car for motorists looking for a fashionable and fun drive.” Commenting on its selection as original equipment supplier, Goodyear says it was tested against a number of other leading brands before the EfficientGrip Performance tyre won out . The MG3 was designed in the UK and is being produced out of the Longbridge plant in the English Midlands. Just a few kilometres away, Goodyear produces the rubber compound that goes into the making of the EfficientGrip tyre and both companies were keen to emphasise the local input the companies bring to the car.

Bridgestone reveals evolution of ‘air free’ tyre

B

ridgestone revealed its second generation ‘Air Free Concept (Non-Pneumatic) Tyre’ at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. The new design features improved loadbearing capabilities, environmental design and driving performance and brings Bridgestone one step closer to a viable, commercially available air free tyre. With a unique structure of spokes stretching along the inner sides of the tyres supporting the weight of the vehicle, there is no need to periodically refill the tyres with air, meaning that the tyres require less maintenance and the worry of punctures is eliminated. In addition, the spoke structure is made from thermoplastic resin and, along with the rubber in the tread portion, the materials used in the tyres are recyclable. Further, by pursuing extremely low rolling resistance and contributing to reductions in CO2 emissions through use of proprietary technologies, Bridgestone believes it is possible to achieve even higher levels of environmental friendliness and safety. Bridgestone is pursuing this technological development with the aim of achieving a “cradle to cradle” process that proactively maximizes the cyclical use of resources from worn tyres into new tyres and the use of recyclable resources.

New technologies used in, and special features of, the second generation tyres Increased Versatility Through Improved LoadBearing Capabilities and Driving Performance Bridgestone is further optimizing the spoke structure by using high-strength but flexible high-performance resin as a material and employing finite element method (FEM) simulations in the design to reduce stress and deformation in the inner part of the tyre. By doing so, the second generation 10

of ‘Air Free Concept tyre’ has increased versatility through improved load-bearing capabilities and driving performance compared with the first generation. High-speed travel (maximum 60 km/h) in ultralight vehicles has become possible.

Pursuing Low Rolling Resistance to Reduce CO2 Emissions About 90 percent of energy loss from tyre rolling resistance comes from repeated changes in the shape of tyres as they roll. In the second generation of airless tyres, Bridgestone says it has succeeded in making a significant reduction in energy loss by using proprietary materials technologies and simplifying the structure of the tyres. As a result, the ‘Air Free Concept tyres’ have achieved the same level of low rolling resistance as their pneumatic fuel-efficient tyres, making possible a contribution to reductions in CO2 emissions. Bridgestone is advancing development of the ‘Air Free Concept tyre’ as a more environmentally friendly product than existing tyres and aims to bring about commercial use in a wide range of vehicles as soon as possible.

CONCEPT TYRE’S WINTER WARNING

C

anadian Tire has partnered with leading rubber Research & Development organization ARTIS to develop a tyre that changes colour at a certain temperature. The concept tyre is designed with a white rubber sidewall strip that changes colour from white to a vivid blue at 7°C; the point at which, the tyre company says, a driver should consider changing to winter tyres. It is a widely accepted that the best time to switch to winter tyres is when temperatures drop to below 7°C. Creating a visual to help promote safe driving in winter, which isn’t just about snow, was the push behind the creation of the concept tyre. The tyre was produced through the creation of a colourchanging rubber inspired by the cold-activated colour-change products already available on the market. The tyre uses a similar thermochromic technology in order to change colour.

Continental’s test site proves its worth

Continental’s Contidrom has been named ‘Proving Ground of the Year 2013’ by an international jury.

T

he international jury of the Automotive Testing Technology International Award 2013 has named Continental’s Contidrom proving grounds north of Hanover, Germany, ‘Proving Ground of the Year 2013’. Among the key factors in the jury’s choice were the testing facilities offered by the Automated Indoor Braking Analyser (AIBA), where the braking properties of up to 100,000 tyres a year can be tested year-round, in all weather conditions, on dry or wet surfaces and in fully-automated mode with no test driver involved. Since its opening in 2012, the AIBA has helped Continental make major progress in the summer and winter tyre development process for cars, vans, and 4x4s. The new facility is located in a hall 300 metres long and up to 30 metres wide, where a driverless test vehicle is accelerated to up to 120 km/h fully automatically and 14

buildings and facilities. At the same time, it is also a great source of motivation for the entire team, because the challenge we now face is of defending the position of the Contidrom as one of the world’s finest proving grounds in the years to come - in the best interests of our customers and of our own testing requirements.” In the context of its long-term strategy, Continental’s tyre division is investing not only in the expansion of its worldwide production capacity but also in the systematic construction of high-tech facilities. The most recent step was the announcement that a new technology centre for production of particularly demanding high-speed tyres is to be built on the site of the tyre plant in Korbach, Germany. By 2018, output at the new facility is scheduled to have reached some 400,000 car tyres in sizes between 19 and 23 inches.

ontinental has been named an Excellent Development Partner by Tesla Motors, the Californiabased electric vehicle manufacturer. The accolade from Tesla was awarded as a result of Continental’s collaboration and development of specialty tyres for Tesla’s Model S electric sedan. For the Model S, Continental supplies tyres that safely transfer the high output of the electric powertrain to the road, ensure precise handling and short stopping distances, and offer low rolling resistance. Low rolling resistance is particularly important for electric vehicles because it helps save energy and can substantially extend the range of the vehicle between charges. For the Tesla Model S, which is marketed worldwide, Continental developed a special XL version of its ContiSportContact 5 summer tyre in size 245/35 R 21 XL 96 W. The Tesla Model S is the world’s first electrically powered luxury sedan to offer a range of up to 500 km. The car can seat up to seven occupants. The powertrain delivers up to 416 hp

(306 kW), making for a top speed of 200 km/h. The Model S covers the 0-100 km/h sprint in just 4.4 seconds. “We are delighted to receive this award and look forward to our ongoing cooperation with Tesla,” said Rachna Naik, Senior Account Manager at Continental Tires the Americas, who received the award from Tesla’s co-founder and CEO Elon Musk. “As we developed the tyre for Tesla we faced the challenge of creating tyres with low rolling resistance for a heavy luxury sedan with very demanding handling characteristics – and doing so in a very short time frame. In the process we had to resolve a series of conflicting objectives and we’re delighted that we’ve been able to meet Tesla’s high expectations of us as an original equipment supplier.” The Continental portfolio also includes a special line of tyres for electric cars: the Conti.eContact summer tyre and the Conti.eContact Winter. Maximum range is achieved with the unusual tyre size 195/55 R 20, which offers a reduction in rolling resistance of up to 30 percent compared to standard tyres. 15

SURVIVING THE HI T

here’s nothing more packed full with tradition than the Australian summer holiday. There’s Christmas and New Year, of course - and the obligatory drink and food binges that surround those two occasions. But those few days are bookended by weeks of school holidays - weeks during which parents struggle dutifully to find something fun and entertaining for the kids to do while waiting for the clock to count down to the end of January and the start of the new school year. At some point during these holidays many of us will take a few days off, pack the kids into the back of the car, fill up every spare inch of space around them with pillows, folding chairs, fishing rods and whatever else we think might come in useful, and head off to somewhere remote. No doubt you’ve seen this family, or one very much like it, as they trundle down the highway. Perhaps you’ve exchanged a glance or two with the children in the back seat, the pleading look on their faces showing their desperation to be somewhere, anywhere, other than the space they currently occupy. And perhaps you’ve noticed the car sunk low on its haunches - the weight of every person, and every thing, forcing it low. Perhaps this has been you at some time in the past - barely sparing a thought for the technical wonder that is the automobile you have entrusted to conduct you and your family to wherever it is you are going. We should, of course, check the car is in good condition. We don’t want to be stranded on the side of a lonely road somewhere, steam rising from the engine, the summer heat melting away the holiday goodwill. And we certainly don’t want to become a ‘stastic’ - that horrible word used with dreadful regularity on the evening news to relay the seemingly ever-increasing ‘holiday road toll’ list. Looking after your tyres clearly plays a big part in keeping us safe and off that list. Tyres are, after all, the bit of the car that touches the ground, that drives it forward, that keeps it rolling. And if the tyres are in bad shape, then the quality of every other part of the car is almost irrelevant. This may seem obvious, but how many of us really think about our tyres and their condition?

16

Ensuring your car’s tyres are at the correct pressures not only makes it a more comfortable and safer ride but can also save you fuel and money. If you do it’s probably not as often as you should. According to Tyresafe – one of the UK’s leading tyre safety organisations - young drivers are at a greater risk of being involved in a tyre related accident through lack of regular tyre maintenance. In a survey, over a third of drivers aged 18-25 had never checked their tread depth, and a quarter had never checked their tyre pressures. Manufacturers are more than aware of the hazards when customers neglect their tyres, and many make a bid to raise awareness whe the holiday season comes around. Kumho, for example, has released a series of tyre safety videos via its social media channels to guide motorists through simple tyre checks. “There is no point waiting until the day before you go away to check your car is ready for a trip,” says Kumho Tyre Australia national marketing and training manager, David Basha. “Motorists should check tyre pressures and tread condition on a regular basis but it’s even more important before a family holiday. “Ensuring your car’s tyres are at the correct pressures not only makes it a more comfortable and safer ride but can also save you fuel and money.” In fact, checking that tyres are in decent condition, and the rest of the car too, is a responsibility we should take very seriously. For it’s not just the safety of our own family that should concern us, but the safety of those we share the road with too.

HIGHWAY TO HELL With that in mind, here are some tips designed to keep you safe and sane on your journey...

Plan ahead • Plan to have regular stops if you’re driving a long distance and allow extra time for delays.

Be prepared • • • • • •

Program your GPS with your destination before departing Pack a picnic basket and enjoy the rest stops along the way Make sure you get enough sleep and don’t drink alcohol the night before you set off Pack wisely and don’t put the children in the car until you’re ready to go Check any medications with your doctor (in case they make you drowsy when driving) Make sure you eat properly – not too little, not too much.

Check that everything is okay It is important you, your vehicle, trailer, caravan and/ or boat are in top condition. Before going on a long trip, it is advisable to book your vehicle in for a thorough safety check by a reputable mechanic. It’s also advisable to run through the following checklists before you go.

For all vehicles you should check: • • • • • • •

All lights (headlights, brake lights and indicators) are in working order Wipers, washers and horn operate properly Fan belt condition and tension Brake and clutch fluid levels and battery water level Cooling system and hoses Oil levels (and check for leaks) Tyres (including your spare) are inflated to the pressure specified for your vehicle.

If you’re towing a trailer, boat or caravan you should check that: • The vehicle you will drive is suited to the type and size of the trailer, boat or caravan

• • • •

Any loads you are carrying are evenly distributed and properly restrained Fittings, couplings and safety chains are correctly fastened Vehicle, trailer and caravan are roadworthy and registered Number plate and registration stickers are not obscured.

Travelling with children

• If you have children, pack something that will keep them entertained on the trip.

Hitting the road

As soon as you get in the car, put on your seat belt and make sure all passengers do the same. Seat belts improve your chances of surviving a serious crash by up to 50%. Along the journey, keep checking to make sure children are still wearing their seat belts. It is also important not to drive while you are tired. During 2008 to 2012, 1 in 7 fatalities were as a result of fatigue related crashes within Queensland.

Rules for survival • • • •

Share the driving if possible As soon as you feel tired, stop and have a break Take a 15 minute break every two hours to rest your eyes and refresh yourself Don’t drive for more than 10 hours in a day.

Stop for a break

Be sure to stop for a break when you suffer from: • sore or heavy eyes • dim or fuzzy vision • you start ‘seeing’ things • droning and humming in ears • general tiredness • stiffness and cramps • aches and pains • daydreaming • delayed reaction times • unintentional increases or decreases in speed • fumbling for gear changes • car wandering across the road. TYRE RETAILING MUM URGES SUMMER HOLIDAY SAFETY CHECK

A

nnette Chapman, who runs the Morningside Tyrepower outlet in Brisbane’s central suburbs with husband Ian, said that families embarking on summer road trips need tyres that can cope with the intense heat, torrential rain and heavy traffic typical of the school holiday period. “If you venture out on the road on poorly maintained tyres you’re not only jeopardising yourself and your family, but other road users as well,” said Mrs Chapman. “Underinflated tyres generate excess heat and, with road surfaces hitting 60 and 70 degrees in summer, they can overheat and fail, with catastrophic results.” With wild weather recently lashing Australia’s east coast, Mrs Chapman believes her message to fellow mothers is particularly timely. “We sometimes forget that we get huge storms over the summer, which can dump hundreds of millimetres of water in a single day. “This can leave a lot of standing water on the road surface, which could lead to hydroplaning if your 18

tyres are not in good condition. “Unless you’ve experienced hydroplaning, it’s hard to describe how completely you lose control of your vehicle - you can’t turn or brake; you’re just a passenger at the mercy of physics.” The Toyo Tire retailer warned against attempting to save money by purchasing cheap tyres. “Well-known and trusted tyre companies such as Toyo spend millions of dollars every year developing rubber compounds that deliver greater safety in all conditions,” she said. “The safety, grip and stability offered by respected tyre brands will help you stay on the road in slippery conditions, stop in shorter distances and remain in control of your vehicle. “On the other hand, there’s a good chance that manufacturers of lowerpriced tyres use older, simpler rubber compounds that sacrifice grip and stability for better tyre wear, but you’re risking a lot to save a few dollars.” Mrs Chapman said that to save money on tyres, Australian families should follow simple tyre maintenance checks - a

practice that could also save their lives. “Poorly maintained tyres will need to be replaced more often, so it pays to look after them,” she said. “Also, correct inflation is the simplest and most cost-effective way to improve fuel economy, even beyond what you can achieve with low rolling resistance tyres. “So you’re saving money while ensuring your family’s safety - what could be better?” Mrs Chapman said a simple five-minute check could prove the difference between an uneventful journey and a horrific accident. “A lot of people are really busy, and tyre maintenance doesn’t even pop up on their radar,” she said. “We really need a shift in our thinking - every time we fill up the petrol tank, we should be checking the condition of our tyres - it really doesn’t take very long.”

Annette Chapman’s tyre checklist before hitting the road these summer holidays • Read the tyre placard in the driver’s door sill and make sure tyre pressure meets the manufacturer’s recommended level at a minimum - slightly higher pressure yields better heat dissipation, stability and fuel economy. • Check the tread across the entire surface of the tyre - uneven wear is a symptom of improper inflation or poor alignment, both of which are easily fixed. • Look for nails or screws embedded in the tyre; it’s better than getting a flat tyre in the rain, miles from anywhere. • Inspect the sidewalls for cuts, gouges or bulges - these require immediate attention from an expert tyre technician, as they could be a sign of imminent tyre failure.

Aussie off-road champions victorious on BFGoodrich

FGoodrich has proven it is the tyre of choice for Champions in the Australian Off Road Championship, (AORC). Championship winner Shannon Rentsch, second placed Hayden Bentley, and third placed Matt Hanson all chose to run BFGoodrich tyres. With no restrictions on the choice of tyre manufacturer the Australian Off Road Championship competitors can run, it continues to be BFGoodrich as the manufacturer of choice for the front runners. No other tyre manufacturer has stood on the top step of the podium in the 2013 Championship. “To win a sixth Championship means a lot to all of us. It definitely has been one of our better years. We have been really consistent, and the lowest position we’ve finished is second, so we’ve got to be really happy with that,” said Rentsch. “Our BFGoodrich tyres have been good all year; we have not had any issues at all with the tyres and they’ve hooked up really well for us. “The last event at Coffs Harbour and

here at Lockyer Valley, the track is really hard on tyres. There is a lot of sharp rocks sticking out of the ground, so it’s definitely a bit of a concern. But the BFGoodrich tyres held up very well again which is exactly what we expected.” The final round of the Australian Off Road Championship, the TJM PRO LOCKER- LOCKYER 300 was held in and around the picturesque valley and foothills of the Mulgowie area in Queensland. Nestled between the two major regional centres of Ipswich and Toowoomba, Mulgowie is an hour drive from the Brisbane CBD and outer Gold Coast areas. Echoing the comments of 2013

Champion Rentsch, third placed Matt Hanson, another BFGoodrich tyre runner said the track was very tough on tyres. “The terrain is very tough; harsh on the cars and on us trying to navigate through. There’s lots of trees, lots of rocks, but the car’s been running really well and the BFGoodrich tyres are holding up just as we knew they would,” said Hanson. “It’s a tyre killer track out there, and the tyres from BFGoodrich are giving us really good grip, so I’m definitely happy we’ve got them on the car. When you look at the top three drivers in the Championship, with them all running BFGoodrich tyres, then that’s obviously saying something!”

NEW MD FOR GOODYEAR IN AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND

G

oodyear has appointed a new Managing Director for the next phase of its growth in Australia and New Zealand. Thierry Villard has been appointed Managing Director of Goodyear and Dunlop Tyres, Australia and New Zealand, replacing Mike Martens who will move to fully focus on his responsibilities as Vice President of Goodyear’s Asia Pacific OTR (Off

The Road) tyre business. Mr Villard will report to Dan Smykta, President of Goodyear Asia Pacific, and relocate to the company’s Melbourne office. Villard joined Goodyear in 2007 as Sales and Marketing Director, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa. In 2010, he was promoted to Managing Director, Central and South East Europe. Prior to Goodyear, Mr Villard gained general management, operations, business development, sales and marketing experience at companies such as Eastman Kodak and Danone. “Throughout his career, Thierry has developed a strong track record of successfully developing and executing strategic plans that result in significant business gains,” said Mr Smytka. “His leadership and

experience make him an ideal fit for this position and I am confident he will bring even greater momentum to our efforts to accelerate growth in the Australia and New Zealand cluster.” Recognising the growth and importance of both the Australia and New Zealand and Asia Pacific OTR tyre businesses, Goodyear Asia Pacific has separated the two units, which Martens previously had oversight on. “Mike has been instrumental in helping develop the current Australia and New Zealand strategy and model, and has been a strong leader for the business,” said Mr Smytka. “He will now dedicate all of his time to leading the Asia Pacific OTR function, which continues to achieve successive record breaking performances.” 19

PIRELLI CALENDAR

Back to the future for Pirelli

T

he name Pirelli may inspire images of Formula One - of racing cars roaring from the start line, or somehow sticking to the track as they corner at 100kp/h, or kicking up a wall of water as they speed around a rain-soaked Silverstone track at the British Grand Prix. But it’s also completely possible that the name Pirelli conjures up images of different kind - for tyres are not, of course, the only product for which Pirelli is rightly famous. 2014 does, in fact, mark the 50th anniversary of the Italian company’s other famous creation, the Pirelli Calendar. So how do you celebrate the 50th anniversary of something as iconic as the Pirelli Calendar - a product that has set the marketing bar so high for so long and has employed the world’s best photographers and most beautiful models to create its images? 20 20

The first Pirelli calendar, that became known as ‘The Cal’ was the brainchild of Pirelli UK Limited, the Group’s British subsidiary. Pirelli’s solution is an unusual and innovative one - it has decided not to produce a ‘new’ 2014 Calendar, but has chosen instead to dip into its archives and release an unpublished 1986 calendar created using the images of German photographer, Helmut Newton. And the pictures are a bit of a treat, featuring elegant shots

of ravishing women, stunning scenery, and the odd, sensational, ‘80s automobile - including a Lamborghini and a contemporary Formula One car. Oh yes, there are even some tyres in the pictures too. So why publish this calendar now? It boils down to some interdepartmental rivalry and a good slice of fortune in keeping decent archives. The first Pirelli calendar, that became known as ‘The Cal’, was the brainchild of Pirelli UK Limited, the Group’s British subsidiary. In 1964 the Brits, looking for a marketing strategy to help Pirelli stand out from its domestic competition, appointed the art director Derek Forsyth and British photographer Robert Freeman, famous for his portraits of the Beatles, to produce what was an entirely innovative project for its day, and one

Using the artistic flair of worldrenowned photographers and a cast that has included some of the world’s most famous and beautiful models . . . ‘The Cal’ became marketing gold that would become wildly successful. And using the artistic flair of world-renowned photographers and a cast that has included some of the world’s most famous and beautiful models including Cindy Crawford, Helena Christensen and Kate Moss to name just three - ‘The Cal’ became marketing gold. By the mid ’80s Pirelli Italia, aware of ‘The Cal’s global potential, decided it wanted a slice of the action, and embarked on an exclusive in-house challenge leading

to British and Italian projects running side by side, each resolutely ignoring the existence of the other. For 1986, the Brits chose the American photographer Bert Stern to take their shots. Pirelli Italia, on the other hand, appointed Helmut Newton, a German photographer who was already a celebrity, well known for his fashion photography. But in the end, the 1986 Calendar was produced using Stern’s images: Newton had to step down due to personal problems. Fortunately, the calendar he conceived was stored away like a precious “family heirloom”, waiting for the right occasion to step into the limelight. 21

ROAD TEST

New Golf: The same, but different

I

’m taking the Golf.” That was my standard response for three weeks whenever my wife asked where I was going while I was testing three versions of the seventh generation of Volkswagen’s hatchback. On offer was the entry level 90TSI DSG, the 103TSI Highline and the diesel 110TDI highline. You can’t mistake the Golf family for anything else, the saying ‘if you’re on a good thing stick with it,’ seems to be a mantra for Volkswagen’s design team when it comes to the iconic car. And that’s not a bad thing; it is a handsome design, purposeful and sleek, appealing to both males and females, being described as either cool or cute respectively. There are changes however. The new Golf has a better chassis than its predecessor, which offers a more solid and safe feel, making you think you’re in something larger, but reminding you of its small frame and nimble maneuvering when you are faced with inner city traffic and parking. The XDL electronic differential lock is now standard on all models and improves both traction and handling and helps avoid the torque steer associated with front wheel drive cars. The interior is familiar, safe, stylish and conservative and Golf fans will love the fact that it doesn’t deviate from what they have always loved. The baby of the family, the 90TSI has a 1.4-litre turbocharged four cylinder petrol engine that produces 90kW of power and 200Nm of torque. The test car was teamed with a 7-speed DSG transmission, which is an option. I found this an impressive entrylevel car but in true standard version fashion, forget climate control, lots 22

of leather or alloy wheels, make do instead with air con, fabric and 15-inch steel wheels. But the drive is good and not that far removed from its pricier siblings. The 103TSI and 110TDI Highline get lots of bells and whistles inside that add a premium feel, with Bluetooth, dual zone climate control, satnav, electric park brake, 5.8-inch display screen with multi media functions, Alcantara trim and 17-inch alloys finishing off the exterior nicely. The 110kW/320Nm turbo diesel engine is a gem and teamed with the six-speed DSG transmission with paddle shift it performs faultlessly, and is very quiet for a diesel. So too however does the 103kW/250Nm turbo petrol in the TSI and it will be a decision based on diesel versus petrol as to which one a buyer opts for, everyone has a preference.

Whether handling the craziness of the M1 freeway commute or negotiating Gold Coast’s myriad of road works and closures, the three cars were all comfortable, safe and strong with performance to please a Euro-loving driver. I’m still not a fan off the stop/start technology and turned it off whenever I remembered to. There is a slight hesitation on take off that bothers me when it’s on. Although the two higher models had the refinement and extras that I like there is no denying that a starting price of only $21,490 for the manual 90TSI will appeal to many new drivers looking for the Golf experience, without spending a fortune. The 103TSI Highline starts at $31,990 and the 110TDI Highline enters at $34,490. The only thing missing was not finishing off the month in a GTi, maybe next time.

Bridgestone Leukaemia Foundation Village officially opened

A

new $9.5 million patient accommodation village designed to support regional blood cancer patients and their families has officially opened in Adelaide’s north-east. The Bridgestone Australia Leukaemia Foundation Village offers free specialised accommodation and support services to patients and their families; mostly those from regional areas who often have to spend months away from home while undergoing treatment. Bridgestone Australia and New Zealand Managing Director Andrew Moffatt said the company was proud to support the Leukaemia Foundation and its efforts to create a facility that will make a significant difference for patients and their families, particularly those from regional areas. “The average treatment duration for leukaemia and other blood cancers is eight months but, in some cases, it can be as much as two years,” said Mr Moffatt. “Together with our patient transport vehicles, this Village will go a long way to alleviating some of the burden families will encounter – providing up to 15 patients and their families with free accommodation and a host of support services. “It will truly become a home-awayfrom-home for patients and their

families and Bridgestone Australia is enormously proud to be associated with this wonderful initiative.” The Bridgestone Australia Leukaemia Foundation Village incorporates 15 two and three bedroom apartments. Facilities include patient support rooms, a gymnasium, games room and library, education auditorium and more. “Bridgestone Australia has supported the Leukaemia Foundation for 27 years,” said Simon Matthias, Leukaemia Foundation General Manager SA and NT. “During that time, the whole Bridgestone network has provided tremendous support – from the supply of patient transport vehicles to enthusiastic participation in our fundraising activities and much more. “It is one of Australia’s longest standing charitable partnerships. “The Bridgestone Australia Leukaemia Foundation Village will enable us to help families at a time when they need it most and we are enormously grateful to everyone at Bridgestone for their continued support and generosity.” Bridgestone has also assisted with furnishing and decorating one of the Village’s three-bedroom apartments – featuring Bridgestone themed decor, the Bridgestone Apartment will provide a comfortable and private space for families.

orld Champion Sebastian Vettel wrapped things up at the final Grand Prix of the season in Brazil in November with yet another victory – his 13th of the year and ninth in a row. Australian Mark Webber ette l an V finished second, running ebasti S an identical strategy, to take third spot in the final standings behind Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso. Aged just 26, the Championship win is Vettel’s fourth and it was a completely dominant second half of the season that secured him victory. Speaking to Formula One’s official website, Vettel found it difficult to accept his achievement. “Four titles . . . even now it is difficult for me to understand what it means. On one hand you have the

plain numbers; on the other hand you have the person behind those numbers and I have to say that my approach has not really changed in those last four years - and nor has the way I look at things. “Grasping what it means to have won four titles is probably something that I will have the luxury to reflect on when I am not racing any more.” Vettel broke or matched a number of records this season. He is the youngest driver to have clinched four world championships, he matched Michael Schumacher’s record of 13 wins in a season, and he is one of only two drivers to have won nine races in a row – an accomplishment he shares with the legendary ’50s driver Alberto Ascari. “When looking back on what

I’ve ‘achieved’ at the age of 26, I have to say it doesn’t really matter to me,” said Vettel. “I left school in 2006 - and that is not so long ago - and now I have won four titles in Formula One. It has been incredible to do that in such a short time, yes, but on the other hand it was also always about taking the next step. “Sometimes you realised that you weren’t ready for that next step so you worked and made sure that you were ready the next time. “I was very lucky never having to feel pressure from the people who were close to me trying to push me into something that I was not ready for.” The final championship positions saw Vettel with 397 points to Alonso’s 242, Webber’s 199, Hamilton’s 189 and Kimi Raikkonen’s 183, while Red Bull’s final constructors; tally was 596 to Mercedes’ 360, Ferrari’s 354, Lotus’s 315, McLaren’s 122, Force India’s 77 and Sauber’s 57.

Webber tests Porsche as future beckons

fter a phenomenal 11 years in Formula One, Mark Webber has moved on to the next phase of his racing career, teaming up with Porsche in Portugal to test the suspension and Michelin tyres of the new LMP1 race car. Porsche AG will field two LMP1 race cars in the sports car World Endurance Championship (WEC) which starts in April 2014, with the Le Mans 24 Hours the highlight of the season. The Red Bull Racing Formula One team gave Webber the green light to conduct the tests, despite still being under contract with them. “My first day in this fascinating project was an intense experience for me. I would like to thank Red Bull Racing for giving me the chance to join the project so early,” said Webber. “This is a major and important step for us all. It allows me to integrate with the team quicker and to contribute to further developing the LMP1 race car. We have a 26

highest class for Le Mans Prototypes (LMP1). The car features a hybrid system that consists of a four-cylinder petrol engine with direct injection and two energy recuperation systems. The recovered energy is stored in a battery until retrieved by the driver. A powerful electric motor then provides additional drive to the front axle. The development of such a highlyefficient drive will have positive influences on production development at Porsche. “Between the roll-out of the completely new car in June and now we have made significant progress,” said Head of Porsche LMP1, Fritz Enzinger. “Every single kilometre was important, providing us with new data that brought the development forward. The whole team has worked extremely hard and I would like to express my sincere thanks for this. Our efforts will continue unabated in 2014. Until the start of the season at Silverstone midApril there is still a lot to do.”

We’re also continuing down the development path for our rear tyres so that we can offer two viable rear tyre options at every circuit to promote greater variability in tyre choice on race day.”

ichelin has revealed it is working on a ‘communicating’ tyre for the Spark-Renault SRT_01E Formula E racecar when the FIA Formula E Championship for electric single-seater cars kicks off later this year. The tyre will incorporate an electronic tag - an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification Device - which will enable the tyres to be identified individually. “These RFID chips will be embedded in the tyres’ sidewalls to ensure their traceability,

from their production right through to their return to the factory after use at the racetrack,” explains Serge Grisin, manager of Michelin Motorsport’s four-wheel programs. “These new electronic tags open up all sorts of possibilities. They will be able to collect data relating to running conditions including temperature and pressure sensors. It will be possible to record and access information covering the tyre’s entire lifecycle.” Embedding RFID chips in racing tyres promises to ease the introduction of new regulations
