ello and welcome to the April/May edition of Australian Tyre Dealer. With many of the major motor racing competitions now in full swing, April sees the return of Mark Webber to the track in the World Endurance Championship (WEC). The Australian driver left Formula One at the end of the 2013 season and now drives for Porsche, piloting its stunning 919 Hybrid race car. Michelin had some input into the evolution of the 919 with the tyre manufacturer working closely with Porsche while the car was in development. On page 26 ATD talks to Mark about his time in Formula One and the new direction his career has taken, and also takes a look at both the 919 and the tyres with which it will be shod. In local news, Chinese tyre manufacturer Aeolus, one of the top 20 tyre manufacturers in the world, has launched its ACE series of tyres into the Australian market. A suite of technologically advanced passenger car tyres, the ACE brand will be marketed through eastern Australia exclusively by TopTyres and will look to build on Aeolus’ success as a manufacturer of truck, bus and OTR products. With the problem of end-of-life tyres a continuing thorn in the industry’s side, we talk to David Mohr, boss of Queensland company Chip Tyre, one of the nation’s largest tyre recycling firms. Thanks to initiatives such as the Tyre Product Stewardship Program - a scheme backed by the federal government as well as much of the industry - the issue is now in the public consciousness more than ever before, and with a growing portfolio of products and innovative ideas Chip Tyre is well placed to help tackle the used tyre conundrum. Internationally, another major automotive event, the Geneva
Motor Show, took place recently. Automotive Shows are a great showcase for manufacturers to show off their products, including often ingenious and original concept products. The Geneva show was a fine example, with many manufacturers debuting concepts both stunning to look at and wildly imaginative. The Swiss firm Rinspeed, for example, took the idea of the driverless car - a vehicle that may appear on our streets in the not-to-distant future - and imagined just what the interior design of such a car could look like. Their ideas - built into a modified Tesla Model S renamed the Rinspeed XchangE - include 20 different seating positions, a large screen infotainment system and a steering wheel that slides out of the way should the front seat occupant want to stretch out and relax. The future never looked so comfortable. Goodyear was represented at Geneva too, taking the opportunity to present some new tyre concepts. These included a stunning-looking, deep-grooved, twin-chambered concept tyre for SUVs and the unveiling of a ‘chip-in-tyre’ concept - a tyre with a microchip attached to the inside of the tyre that can relay information on tyre pressure, temperature and other details to the vehicle’s computer which can take them into account and improve performance. Check out the tyres and some of the vehicle concepts from page 12. As always, feel free to drop me a line if you have some news you would like to share with the industry. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hankook tyre chosen for BMW 4-Series Coupe
H
ankook Tire has been selected as Original Equipment supplier for the new BMW 4 Series. The new, stylish and sporty Coupé will be factory equipped with Hankook tyre’s high-end Ventus S1 evo2 flagship tyres, in size 225/50 R17 W. The recently launched 4-Series Coupé is the sixth model by the BMW Group to be fitted with Hankook tyres, following on from BMW’s 1 and 3 Series, as well as X5 and Mini. This marks another important step in Hankook Tire’s global expansion in the premium segment. “We are pleased to continuously intensify our cooperation with the BMW Group,” said Mr. Seung Hwa Suh, Vice Chairman and CEO of Hankook Tire. “Supplying tyres to the new 4-Series Coupé marks another important milestone for us as it is the first time we are supplying tyres to the BMW Group that have not only been developed in Europe, but are also supplied
directly from our European plant.” Hankook says, even under demanding conditions, the tyre stands out for its successful combination of driving dynamics and comfort features as well as wet grip and rolling resistance performance. “During the intensive trial phase, our Ventus S1 evo2 has once more given impressive proof of its high level of driving comfort and distinctively dynamic driving characteristics,” said Hankook Tyre’s Ventus S1 evo2
Mr. Klaus Krause, Head of the European Technology Center (ETC) at Hankook Tire, where the tyre development of the BMW Group in Europe takes place. “With the new Ventus S1 evo2, we have consistently applied our development philosophy, Kontrol Technology, and developed a modern high-performance tyre that meets our customers’ requirements in terms of driving dynamics, safety and environmental friendliness.” At present, about 50 engineers and technicians are developing bespoke tyre solutions for European car manufacturers at Hankook Tire’s ETC in Hanover, Germany. Also, tyres supplied to the BMW Group are developed and tested there. Production takes place at Hankook Tire’s European plant in Rácalmás, Hungary. The company’s state-of-the-art plant specialises in the production of passenger car tyres for the European market and ranks among the most modern production facilities in the world.

Michelin announce new tyre for long distance trucks
D
ue to arrive in Australia in the second half of 2014 the Michelin X Line Energy Z (295/80R22.5) is an all position tyre designed for long distance trucks. The company says it will meet the needs of customers looking to maximize the value of their tyre through long first life mileage, multiple regrooving and retreading, and fuel savings. The new Michelin X Line Energy Z retains the long mileage benefit of its predecessor, Michelin XZA2+ Energy, while at the same time lowering rolling resistance, and offering improved retreadability. The key characteristics of the tyre are: • Improved Cost Per Kilometre (CPK) - Thanks to longer mileage,
greater retreadability and lower rolling resistance resulting in fuel savings when used on all wheel positions, the CPK of this tyre can be reduced. • Casing Endurance - Compared with it’s predecessor, the Michelin XZA2+, the tyre offers a 20% improvement in crown impact resistance due to an upgrade to an 18 ply rating design with a full width crown ply. The tyre will continue to perform after being retreaded with improved crown aggression resistance and anti-stone trapping rib designed to prevent stone drilling and tread cutting.
• Safety and Reliability - Improved road handling through the increased stability of the contact patch on the road due to the rigid crown ply structure. In addition the robust casing design improves the casing integrity. Michelin says the X Line Energy Z is a reliable and cost effective tyre for long distance operators bringing fuel efficiency without compromising durability. The new product will also use the new naming and sidewall marking which will help customers’ to identify the right tyre for their needs. For more information, visit http://transport. michelin.com.au

Kumho launches new ultra-high performance tyre
K
umho has released a new ultra-high performance tyre - the Solus HS51. Kumho’s research and development team was set the challenge of creating an ultra-high performance tyre that doesn’t compromise performance handling for comfort and the result was the Solus HS51. According to Kumho Tyre Australia national marketing and training manager David Basha, the Solus HS51 places importance on a smooth and quiet ride. “The Solus HS51 is the beginning of a new era in high performance tyres,” said Mr Basha. “Traditionally, low profile performance tyres have been noisier and come with a slightly harsher ride but the HS51 will redefine how we think of ultra-high performance tyres.”
“Kumho has implemented the latest developments in high grip silica compounds to ensure optimal grip in dry and wet conditions.” The key to the Solus HS51’s ride is its non-directional tread pattern and compound. Its tread design features a centralised ribbed pattern and reinforced blocks to aid in improving brake distances, particularly in the wet, while minimising the amount of road noise audible from within the cabin. Water is effectively dispersed by the HS51’s four wide lateral grooves to give the driver peace of mind in the wet. A strengthened shoulder gives the HS51 stability under the loads of performance cornering while notches in the shoulder blocks also aid in water channelling to ensure maximum contact with the road. Kumho has implemented the 6

latest developments in high grip silica compounds to ensure optimal grip in dry and wet conditions. In comparisons against an equivalent Kumho tyre, the HS51 recorded improvements in every area in dry handling, wet handling, dry braking, wet braking, wet circuit and skid pan tests. “The research and development team has outdone itself in the creation of the HS51,” said Mr Basha. “The Solus HS51 UHP tyre proves there is such a thing as smooth performance motoring.” Drivers also have the option of adding Kumho’s ‘No Worries’ road
hazard warranty when purchasing the Solus HS51 for added peace of mind. For $3.95 per tyre, the road hazard warranty covers potential tyre damage from debris, potholes and gutters for 12 months after fitment or the first 25 per cent of tread life. The Solus HS51 is available in 32 sizes ranging from 15 to 17 inches with 14 sizes available with an XL extra load rating - making it ideal for a range of locally made and imported vehicles including the BMW 3 Series, Audi TT, A3 and A4, Holden Commodore, Ford Falcon as well as many Toyota, Honda, Subaru, Kia and Hyundai models.
Trucking hero receives Highway Guardian award
B
ridgestone and the Australian Trucking Association (ATA) have awarded Brad Morrison of Nightingale Transport the inaugural Bridgestone Bandag Highway Guardian award. The award honours the great community service performed by professional truck drivers who go above and beyond the call of duty to assist those around them during the course of their normal work. In November last year, Mr Morrison came upon the scene of a tragic accident on the Cunningham Highway which had left a young mother unconscious and both her and her baby trapped in a burning car. Brad was able to rescue the 10 month old girl but, sadly, the mother could not be rescued. “Brad’s selfless actions sum up everything that the Bridgestone Bandag Highway Guardian award stands for,” said Andrew Moffatt, Managing Director of Bridgestone Australia Ltd. “His bravery in the face of extreme danger speaks volumes, not only for Brad himself but also for the trucking community in general.”
Brad was on one of his regular runs when he came upon the accident. “I was just past Cunningham’s Gap on the way into Brisbane when I got a call over the UHF radio that a truck had gone into the bushes. I slowed down and came round the bend, expecting to see him just run off the road, and saw a big crash instead - the truck was jack-knifed and there was a little car all on fire,” said Brad. “I pulled up and jumped out as quick as I could to see if there was anything I could do to help. As I came up around the back of the little car, I could hear a baby crying. I just had to get in there, I had to get the baby out.” ATA Chair Noelene Watson said Brad was a highly deserving recipient of the award. “While we would like to extend our greatest sympathies to the family, Brad’s quick thinking and decisive action enabled him to save the child at great risk to his own life,” she said. Potential Bridgestone Bandag Highway Guardian candidates can be brought to the ATA’s attention at any time by emailing ata@truck.net.au

Yokohama to release new “BluEarth-A” tyre
T
he Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., is to launch a new edition to its fuel-efficient “BluEarth” tyre brand for passenger cars in Europe and Asia. Most sizes of the new “BluEarth-A” have been awarded the European tyre grading system’s C grade for rolling resistance, and A for wet performance. Yokohama says the “BluEarth-A” delivers a high degree of drivability and exceptional fuel efficiency and, in addition, offers a well-balanced total performance featuring low noise, comfort and longlife. The application of a “nano blend compound”, based on Yokohama’s advance compound technology, combined with an asymmetrical tread pattern provide “BluEarth-A” tyres with superior wet grip while enhancing fuel efficiency and abrasion resistance. ridgestone has launched the new M788 steer tyre specifically suited to off/on-road applications across Australia’s harsh environment. The M788 – which is available in 385/65R22.5 and replaces the M748 – features a cut-chip resistant compound, further improving its abilities for off-road applications. The deep tread depth delivers long wear life and the new tread pattern gives excellent resistance against irregular wear. Claudio Sodano, Bridgestone’s General Manager TFS, said the M788 had been extensively tested with Bridgestone clients across the country. “We have tested the product in on/ off-road applications in mining regions in Western Australia, Queensland and the Northern Territory,” he said. “We have seen some outstanding 8

results, particularly in terms of wear life when compared against the preceding tyre and the competition. In each instance, we were comparing the M788 against our M748 and competitor steer tyres and the M788 outperformed every one of them.”
also contributes to the tyres’ exceptional rigidity and drainage characteristics. The “BluEarth-A” employs a “noisecontrolled pitch” that contributes to a quieter ride by suppressing the incidence of uneven tyre wear. Yokohama says the tyre’s unique profile holds up well under the weight of large sedans and helps ensure a high level of control stability. Yokohama has applied its proprietary aerodynamic technologies to reduce air drag and its dimple design on the tyre shoulders to further raise the tyres’ fuel efficiency. “BluEarth” is Yokohama’s “environmentally, human and socially friendly” global tyre brand. In addition to the “BluEarth-A,” other environmentally friendly products within the “BluEarth” range include the flagship “BluEarth-1” and the “BluEarth AE-01”. The Bridgestone M788 is available nationally. Bridgestone also showcased the R168 trailer tyre at the Melbourne International Truck and Trailer Show in April. The R168 features a wider belt construction for long life, four main ribs to provide high tread stiffness and low trailer swing and a top body ply insert which improves durability and retreadability. “Once again, this is a tyre that we have extensively tested with highway fleets running on major interstate routes,” said Mr Sodana. “The wear life test results have been outstanding. In every test we have conducted against our main competitor tyre, the R168 has come out on top. The mileage of the R168 has been huge – in fact, in one application the R168 gave a projected wear life of 350,000 kilometres in a drop-deck trailer application. “We believe the Bridgestone R168 is the ultimate trailer tyre for wear life.” The Bridgestone R168 will be available in all major trailer sizes.

Michelin Pilot Super Sport for new Volvo Polestar
A
ll of the new Volvo S60 and V60 Polestars, which will be sold on four continents around the world from June 2014, will be fitted with 245/35 R 20 Michelin Pilot Super Sport ultra-high performance tyres as standard. The Polestar engineered cars are Volvo’s fastest production cars ever and with their 350hp six cylinder turbocharged engines are able to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 4.9 seconds. Speaking about their decision to fit the Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyre to the cars, Henrick Fries, Volvo S60 and V60 Polestar Project Manager said: “The Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres suit the Volvo S60 and V60 very well and are capable of delivering the high levels of performance required for our cars”. The Michelin Pilot Super Sport is Michelin’s ultra-high performance road tyre that is fitted to some of the world’s fastest supercars. “The Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyre perfectly conveys the Michelin Total Performance strategy by combining excellent wet and dry grip performance along with high levels of safety and longevity”, says Anders Svensson, Michelin 10
“The Michelin Pilot Super Sport is Michelin’s ultra-high performance road tyre that is fitted to some of the world’s fastest supercars.” OE Commercial Account Manager. “And it was this combination of performance characteristics that Volvo was looking for to complement its new cars.” To be able to offer this level of performance the Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyre features a combination of three technologies: the Aramid fibre belt, the Bi-Compound tread band and the Variable Contact Patch 2.0. Aramid is a high-tenacity fibre primarily used in aeronautics and protective military gear, whose key feature is its high strength and lightness. Strong and light at the same time, aramid is five times more resistant than steel at equivalent weight. Due to its variable tension, the belt is
tighter in the tread area compared to the shoulders, centrifugal force is more effectively controlled and pressure is more evenly distributed. Originally developed for race tyres, Bi-Compound technology uses different rubber compounds on the left and right sides of the tread. On the outer shoulder, the tread compound contain a specific elastomer which ensures exceptional endurance during cornering, while on the inside, a different elastomer in the compound combines with a special tread design to enable the tyre, on wet roads, to break through the water’s surface and adhere to even the slightest irregularities in the road. The innovative feature of the Variable Contact Patch 2.0 is that it changes shape depending on actual driving conditions, thereby guaranteeing total vehicle control. In this way, even as the patch’s shape changes when cornering, the amount of rubber in contact with the road remains the same. The Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyre achieves a unique balance between safety and driving enjoyment that makes it suitable for everyday road use as well as the racetrack.
Software innovation secures bus contract for Tyres4U
T
yres4U, Australia’s leading independent tyre distributor, was recently awarded a three year contract to supply bus tyres and associated services to the State Transit Authority of NSW (STA). The contract was based on a two year trial of bus tyres and services at selected STA bus depots.
“Double Coin RT606 is a purpose built bus tyre with reinforced side walls to protect against curb damage and provides greater safety with enhanced traction and grip.”
Double Coin RT606
The STA use over 5,000 new bus tyres plus 10,000 retreaded bus tyres annually within its fleet of just over 2,000 buses across 12 bus depots. New bus tyres and bus tyre retreads were supplied and monitored at each depot with the best results and service being considered as the leading factor contributing to the tender award.
Tyres4U was able to demonstrate savings from selecting the optimal bus tyres and retreads on a CPK (cost per kilometre) basis but also provided savings by streamlining the administration and invoicing system for bus tyre procurement whilst providing transparency for all stakeholders. This is why Tyres4U designed a new web-based software system to record, track and monitor all the bus tyres and retreads supplied to the STA. The system helps reduce the carbon foot print as it is paperless and is available online anywhere, anytime to be viewed by all parties and is easily controlled by staff with a PDA (personal digital assistant). Tyres4U supplies new Double Coin RT606 steer tyres for each bus complemented with VIPAL and Recamic bus tyre retread rubber according to the nature of the transport routes. Double Coin RT606 is a purpose built bus tyre with reinforced side walls to protect against curb damage and provides greater safety with enhanced traction and grip. By using a controlled system of tyre supply applicable to the nature of the tyre use and monitoring the
performance of these tyres, Tyres4U then ascertains the best tyre for each STA bus. Tyres4U provides ongoing services to ensure the STA maximises their return on their tyre investment: • Regular tyre inflation inspections optimising tyre performance and reducing STA fuel costs. • Tyre performance history records for effective tyre management. • Data registration to track all used bus tyre cases for inventory and quality control. • CPK (cost per kilometre), PSI (inflation pressures) and tyre projections monthly reports. • Auto-emailing of invoices and statements to lower administration costs.

G
oodyear Dunlop Tires Europe revealed a new concept tyre at the Geneva Show designed to enhance the performance of the car on cornering, braking and stability thanks to a direct link between an embedded microchip in the tyre and the car’s onboard computer. The Goodyear Dunlop technology is built on battery-less microchip technology attached to the inside of the tyre. The system sends information on tyre pressure, temperature and the tyre identification details to the vehicle’s computer. Using that information, the car’s central computer system is able to automatically refine the vehicle’s longitudinal and lateral control algorithms, to deliver an improved driving performance. “Today’s advanced vehicle control 12

information, we could deliver new levels of driving performance to the car. “Today we are showcasing a first concrete step in that direction as we begin to translate the wealth of information received by the tyre back to improving and enhancing the overall driving experience – it is a major step forward.” By tapping the data from the tyre directly into the system, the new technology helps the car improve its overall performance, including reduced stopping distances when the ABS system kicks in and improved stability delivered by more informed Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system. The company is currently testing the system for market implementation.

As for the car, the interior has some unusual highlights including two rows of seats, one behind the other in jet-cockpit style which accentuate the carbon fibre monocoque construction and modern display technology. 13
Goodyear reveals future SUV tyre concept at Geneva
G
oodyear announced a new future SUV tyre concept at the Geneva Motor Show 2014. The new concept, designed as part of Goodyear’s ongoing research into potential tyre technologies, builds on the company’s continuing work to develop innovative products for future applications. The unnamed concept builds on a standard SUV tyre with a large central groove. Thanks to this groove the tyre has a reduced contact patch with the road, which in turn could improve the tyre’s overall rolling resistance, supporting ongoing efforts to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 released from the car. The groove is also designed to evacuate large quantities of water and mud away from the tyre’s contact patch during wet conditions, effectively offering a possibility to improve its overall wet grip. Unlike many other concepts, the Goodyear tyre does not put two small tyres together on one rim, but builds the double contact patch tyre on a single SUV tyre construction. The approach means that the tyre is able to support the load

weight of an SUV, while still offering the benefits of a double contact patch tyre. As an additional benefit, the removal of a large patch of rubber from the tyre to create the groove means that the tyre’s overall weight is reduced, delivering a more lightweight product, which uses less rubber in production. The new concept is part of an ongoing effort at Goodyear to work around developing sustainable solutions. “At Goodyear we are always working to identify key opportunities for future development possibilities”, said Jean-Pierre Jeusette, Director General of Goodyear’s Innovation Center in Luxemburg (GICL). “We spend hundreds of hours discussing, analysing, learning, designing and developing new ideas and concepts across our research and development facilities in both Europe and the United States. The result of this thinking is often molded into tyre concepts that are then used to stimulate further developments. This tyre is no different, and it provides the world with an example of our development process at Goodyear. It is by far not the only concept we are looking at for similar applications, reflecting the complexity of the tyre engineering process we go through to deliver new and innovative products to the market, today and in the future”. Although the tyre is not designed to be a marketable product, the concept SUV tyre, which is also fitted to Hyundai’s Intrado concept car, is one of several possible ways to address rolling resistance and wet grip. Additional features built into the tyre include Auto-Clean Hydrophobic textures, designed to expel mud and other solids from the tread, and advanced noise absorbing textures in tread grooves to reduce noise. “Looking towards possible future solutions helps us to deliver many of the technologies of today”, explains Jeusette. The concept tyre also previews a potential mobility solution with Twin Air Chambers (one at each side) both interconnected through a valve system that allows the tyre to continue to roll even after a puncture of one of both air chambers. The tyre is a pure concept and part of Goodyear’s ongoing research.

Toyo toughens up for 4x4 tyre boom
W
ith combined SUV and 4x4 utility sales now representing over 40 per cent of all passenger vehicles sold in Australia, demand for all-terrain tyres is booming. In response, Toyo Tires is rolling out its new Open Country A/T II - a state-of-the-art all-terrain tyre suitable for a wide range of off-road capable utilities and wagons. The new tyre boasts significantly longer tread life than its durable predecessor, the Open Country A/T, and independent testing in the United States found it achieved 40 per cent more mileage than a leading competitor. The secret to Open Country A/T II’s tread life is an innovative compound featuring a new anti-wear polymer and smaller carbon particles, which bond more strongly to improve wear resistance. The tread profile has been optimised for better contact pressure distribution to reduce uneven wear, while tie bars between the outer blocks help resist shoulder wear. Open Country A/T II has two layers of joint-less spiral cap ply for improved puncture-resistance, while thicker rubber on the upper sidewalls improves bruise resistance.
Toyo Tires Open Country A/T II
“Considering its versatility, long mileage and toughness, Open Country A/T II offers consumers great value for money.”
The tread pattern is more aggressive, featuring distinctive staggered and scalloped shoulder buttresses for better off-road bite. Fringed edges on the tread blocks aid initial traction, and wide grooves between the blocks improve mud performance and stone ejection. Toyo, assisted by professional drivers Team D-Max Australia, undertook its own comparison testing of Open Country A/T II against two popular all-terrain tyres from other brands. The testing determined that the Toyo matched the class-leaders in the dirt while offering enhanced handling and braking safety on road. On bitumen, Open Country A/T II had the best mid-corner grip during both wet and dry slalom manoeuvres and the best dry braking performance. Toyo Tyres Australia marketing manager José Angeles believes Open Country A/T II will appeal to a wide cross-section of customers - particularly those driving more rugged SUVs and 4x4 utes. “These motorists want a tyre that meets their needs seven days a week - on the work site or the highway during the week, as well as on the beach or in the bush on the weekend,” said Mr Angeles. “Considering its versatility, long mileage and toughness, Open Country A/T II offers consumers great value for money.” Open Country A/T II is available now in popular sizes, and the range will be expanded to 31 sizes - most available in a light-truck construction.

From worn tyres to this, reusable rubber crumb
BLACK GOLD: RECYC
A
few miles west of Brisbane, on the outskirts of the town of Ipswich, is a region called New Chum. It’s an area now dotted by deep trenches and sheer cliffs - a legacy of a coal mining industry now long gone. But, while most of these mines lie empty and silent, for one of them there is new life. For though the Rhonda No. 1 Mine Colliery may be empty of the ‘black gold’ of coal, in its place there now sits another commodity potentially just as lucrative and important - the manmade ‘black gold’ that is the end-of-life tyre. For this is the home of Chip Tyre, one of the nation’s largest tyre recyclers, and a company that deals with thousands of tyres per day. Huge loaders move around the site, grabbing vast
16
numbers of tyres and depositing them into an immense shredding machine that grumbles noisily as it churns its way through them, spitting out shredded remnants of rubber and steel. Passed over magnetic tables, the twisted cords of metal are reclaimed from the shredded tyre and lie in neat heaps, ready for sale as scrap. The rubber moves on, now to be passed over air gravity tables which remove any synthetic fibres such as nylon and, once that is done, what rubber remains is moved on to the grading plant where the cacophony of noise is evidence of further grinding and shredding, the end result of which is unblemished black rubber granules, made to sizes from the dust-like 0.7mm upwards. It’s a hugely impressive operation, made even more so

CLING USED TYRES “Ultimately our aim is that for every tyre that comes in, everything in it is used in some way either on site or is sold as a product.” with the arrival of a brand new Shark shredder, an addition to the company that will see them churn through even more tyres. The new shredder also signals that Chip Tyre is a company successfully tackling a major environmental problem. For end-of-life tyres are a major issue, and the statistics that surround them make for pretty sobering reading.
Until recently, the figures read that of the 48 million tyres that reach end-of-life status each year in Australia, only 16 per cent were recycled, the majority of the rest – as much as 66 per cent – ended up as landfill, with the other 18 per cent exported. It’s a set of statistics that must change, a fact recognised by the industry as well as the federal government which has backed the creation of Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) and the Tyre Product Stewardship Program - a scheme which aims to increase domestic tyre recycling, reduce the number of tyres dumped at landfills, support new technologies and expand the market for tyre-derived products. And it’s a problem that Chip Tyre has been tackling since the company’s inception in 1998. continued page 18
17
The genesis of the company is an unusual one - the background of company founder and CEO David Mohr is not a tyre industry background. In fact, he spent nearly 20 years in the farming industry, making his living running cattle and sheep, first in Victoria and then in Chinchilla in Qld. The transition from running cattle to tyre recycling may sound a little odd, but it’s a reflection of David’s eye for business, environmental thinking and of bending to the harsh whim of the Australian climate. “Of my 13 years at Chinchilla, the first six were magnificent,” says David. “The next seven years were drought. And that makes you think of things a bit laterally. I happened to be fencing one day and hammering in wooden posts with a driver, and I thought, if it were possible to make posts out of rubber it would be a win-win – we wouldn’t have to cut down trees and it would be somewhere for old tyres to go.” Enquiries within the industry would instead lead David to the idea of producing a finer grade of rubber for playground surfacing. At the time, playground surfaces often used larger buffings as its key ingredient, and larger buffings needed extra work to be laid out without curling. “I spent time with Master Fibre, which was one of the leading playground installation companies

at the time, and they really wanted a granular mix because it finishes nice and smooth,” says David. That business idea led to meetings with industry leaders, researching government licensing and environmental requirements and, just as importantly, finding a site for his new venture. “I was living at Chinchilla and travelling down through the week looking for a site that was suitable – a site that was close enough to the city but not too exposed,” says David. “I was told to have a look at this site, the Rhonda No. 1 Mine Site, and as I was driving over here the song ‘Help Me, Rhonda’, was playing on the radio. It was fate. “We marked out about 6 hectares that included the dam which can be used for cooling and fire purposes.” In the 15 years since its creation, Chip Tyre has grown into a company that recycles more than 120,000 tyres per month – tyres that come in from all over Queensland and northern NSW - and creates 500 tonnes of rubber crumb of various sizes. That crumb is sent to customers across the nation and abroad – including to Japan, Korea and New Zealand - where it is used to produce a wide range of products from surfacing for playgrounds, sports fields, horse walkers and racehorse stables; to glue products, building application products and even for bullet stops on rifle ranges where it is laid out behind the targets at the end of the range. “Quite a few private rifle ranges use it,” says David. “It cuts down on noise and there are no ricochets. “We also grind the rubber down to 0.7mm for use in tile adhesive grouts and spray seal bitumen. We make about 250 tonne of that a month and another 250 tonnes of the other sizes.” And that production is likely to increase. Thanks to initiatives like the Tyre Stewardship Scheme, the lobbying by environmental groups, and the general increase in knowledge of the public, the tyre recycling business is a growth industry. That can only be a positive, although the increased production of rubber crumb as more tyres are recycled causes its own dilemma. “Since groups like the Boomerang Alliance have actively pursued the illegal baling and export of tyres there are more and more tyre stores coming over and doing the right thing,” says David. “In the long-term that will be a good thing.” “What we need though are more and more outlets,” he adds. “There is a bit of a limit to spray seal for roads and playgrounds.” One avenue that Chip Tyre is examining for use of its rubber crumb product is called MohrPower, a blasting explosive designed for use in the mining industry and which uses rubber crumb as a replacement for diesel. It’s a product that could produce millions of dollars in fuel savings per year for the mining industry, and further millions in the reductions in the cost of explosives. In development for some years, the company has been running tests and recorded some very satisfying results. As the industry grows and develops, additional products that can be made using the rubber, and other components, from recycled tyres are likely to be found. In the meantime, Chip Tyre is looking to be even more environmentally friendly as it looks to the future. “Converting our waste into reusable energy is very high priority,” says David. “The nylon in the tyre currently goes to landfill but we have plans to put in a pyrolysis plant, turn all of our waste into diesel and then use the diesel to power a genset (a generator) to run the plant. We will try and be self-sufficient. “Ultimately our aim is that for every tyre that comes in, everything in it is used in some way either on site or is sold as a product.”

Continental heralds new era for its LifeCycle business
C
ontinental recently held a ribbon cutting ceremony for its ContiLifeCycle Plant in Germany. The plant, which is a world’s first, integrates a cutting-edge facility for retreading bus and truck tyres with a proprietary industry-scale rubber recycling unit. The technology developed by Continental was recognised as an environmental innovation by the German Federal Ministry of Environment. By producing retreaded tyres with product characteristics that are on par with new tyres, Continental says it has taken a strategic step, heralding a new era for its LifeCycle business. “When we started this project, our aim was to bring our LifeCycle solution closer to new tyre production. Within a timeframe of less than 18 months, we planned and built a plant that not only catered to necessities, but pushed the boundaries of what is possible. We have put all of our knowledge from tyre engineering and manufacturing into the ContiLifeCycle Plant and thus reached a new level in terms of product performance and characteristics,” said Nikolai Setzer, Member of the Executive Board of Continental and Head of Tyre Division. These characteristics were achieved by implementing production techniques from Continental’s new tyre production as well as refining existing retreading technology. Based in Hannover-Stocken, the new retreading factory will have a projected annual capacity of 180,000 retreaded tyres once full capacity is reached. “For us, the ContiLifeCycle Plant serves as a competence centre for our world-wide LifeCycle business. Our unique team of R&D, Manufacturing, Engineering as well as Quality Management departments here in Stocken develops and improves solutions for our other LifeCycle centres, such as Petaling Jaya, Malaysia; Cuenca, Ecuador and Morelia, Mexico. Furthermore, we established an on-site training facility, the ContiLifeCycle Academy, in the plant for both internal

As part of the ContiLifeCycle Plant, Continental has also developed a recycling process for the tread powder that arises during retreading.
“We put our already cured tread powder through a series of different processing steps, so that we can reverse the curing process. The recycled material is of such high and controlled quality that it can be used for tyre compounding without hesitation,” said Dr. Boris Mergell, Vice President Product Development & Industrialisation Commercial Vehicle Tyres. Tread buffings from Continental’s new ContiLifeCyle retreading factory will be completely used in the recycling facility. This results, the company says, in the reduction of waste by more than 80 percent and significant CO2 savings. “With our ContiRe tyres made in Stocken, we offer our customers a product portfolio that is economically and ecologically sustainable. Environmentallyfriendly production techniques and raw material usage in the ContiLifeCyle Plant are complemented by low rolling resistance of our final products and a wide range of service solutions,” said Christian Sass, Director Retread Business. 19

Michelin partners with Porsche Carrera cup
G
lobally, Michelin’s involvement with Carrera Cup is more than just supplying tyres; it is a technical partnership with designers from Michelin working closely with Porsche to develop a tyre that ensures the total performance of the cars on which it is fitted. The arrival of the new Porsche GT3 Cup car saw Michelin develop a new tyre that will be run in the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia in 2014 – designed to provide even greater durability and consistency. Beyond boasting wider dimensions at both the front and rear (27/65-18 and 31/71-18 now, as opposed to 25/64-18 and 30/68-18 in the case of the 997), the new Michelin Cup N2 tyre was designed to match the demands of the German manufacturer in terms of durability and performance. Unlike previous generations of the Michelin tyre used in Carrera Cup, this tyre will be used in all Carrera Cups around the world including the Porsche Supercup. The company says this is because it has been designed
20
to perform in all conditions, from the cool climate in Europe, to the heat and humidity of Asia, and the dry heat that we so often see in Australia. Engineers at Michelin Competition and the brand’s Technology Centre in France worked simultaneously on the new tyre’s construction and tread. The rubber compounds used in its composition are the direct product of endurance racing, ensuring greater durability and better consistency throughout a race distance. Michelin say, racing is a technological laboratory at the service of innovation. After being tested in the extreme conditions of a race track, innovations that increase tread life, ensure sustainable tyre performance, improve safety and enhance energy efficiency are then used to develop Michelin passenger car tyres. Michelin has tasted success in the World Endurance Championship, and more locally Porsche Carrera Cup Australia, and has an impressive record of 22 victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, including taking out a 16th consecutive victory in 2013.

Double accolades for Kumho performance tyres in German design awards
K
umho has been recognised for its innovation in performance tyres with two new accolades in Germany’s prestigious iF Design Awards. Kumho’s first ever Super-Ultra High Performance tyre, the Ecsta PS91 and luxury performance Solus HS51 both claimed awards in the transportation category. According to Kumho Tyre Australia national marketing and training manager, David Basha, the awards are recognition the extensive research and development the company puts into every new tyre. “Our engineers were given two unique challenges; to create the first Super UHP tyre and to develop a sports tyre which also delivers on comfort,” said David Basha. “The results were the Ecsta PS91 and Solus HS51. For both of them to claim a design award is a credit to
the development and design resources Kumho invests in its products.” The Ecsta PS91 is the flagship of Kumho’s sports tyre range and is designed specifically for the world’s most powerful cars such as Porsches, Lamborghinis, Audis and AMGs. Kumho’s all new HS51 is the pinnacle of Kumho’s luxury tyre line and was developed with both the driver and passenger in mind.
Ecsta PS91 and Solus HS51
The HS51, or ‘harmony sports’ tyre delivers a smooth and comfortable ride while not compromising on performance or handling capabilities. Kumho has won a host of design awards in recent years including iF Design Awards in 2010 and 2012 as well as consecutive Red Dot Design Awards in 2012 and 2013. “Kumho is constantly evolving its product lines and developing new compounds and tread patterns,” said Mr Basha. “The multi-million dollar investment into research and development is why Kumho has been so successful at recent design awards around the world,” he said. The iF Design Awards have a history spanning more than 60 years and are among the most revered industrial design awards in the world. In 2014 there were 1102 entries across the 17 categories of the iF Awards.
CUTTING THE COSTS OF DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS AND TRAINING
W
ith technological advances, the tools and training needed to service a vehicle are evolving, meaning that workshops are having to invest in a plethora of tools and staff training in order to stay competitive. Scanners, oscilloscopes, temperature probes, pressure testers, leak detectors, voltage meters, code readers, timing analysers, fuel injection test benches and more make up the average workshop, with new products being brought out frequently.
And with approximately 15,000 workshops operating in Australia, the need to remain competitive and offer a quality service is imperative. Dyno Dynamics says that it has come up with a solution. “We’re finding that more and more people are embracing dynamometer technology since we brought out the affordable Dynotech dynamometer,” said Alan Evans, Managing Director of Dyno Dynamics. “A common misconception in the industry is that dynamometers are a tool for performance cars alone. Dyno Dynamics created the Dynotech dynamometer as an affordable tool for the average workshop, to assist with diagnostics.” “Workshops invest less into tools and training when they have a Dynotech, as staff only need to be trained on this one Swiss army knife of diagnostics.” The company says that working with a Dynotech not only saves money, but eliminates the risks associated with on-road testing and Dyno Dynamics will come to your workshop for an obligation-free demo. ayco Australia has extended the company’s automotive aftermarket product offering with a new range of Coolant Expansion Tanks to suit a wide range of Australian makes and models. Also known as radiator overflow tanks, the initial premium quality Dayco aftermarket product range consists of 13 part numbers to suit a broad range of Holden and Ford models. As modern engines generate enormous heat, to ensure efficient thermal management all modern cooling systems are heavily pressurised. As the engine coolant heats up, it expands and creates significant pressure within the radiator. The primary function of the radiator overflow tank is to retain lost coolant due to this expansion and to return the coolant to the radiator when it cools down and shrinks. Dayco Coolant Expansion Tanks provide a high point in the engine coolant system that also allows a cushion of air to be present which serves to ensure that pressure within the cooling system does not become too great, while also ensuring that engine coolant is not lost due to expansion. These Dayco thermal management products include a pressure rated cap and a vent located in the neck of the tank to release excess pressure when required. Team Toyo gears up for off-road racing season
T
eam Toyo is attacking the 2014 off-road racing season with a line-up that’s bigger, faster and tougher. One of Australia’s most successful off-road racing squads, Peter Kittle Motor Sport, has switched to Toyo Open Country tyres in search of the edge required to win the ‘Bathurst 1000 of off-road racing’, the Finke Desert Race. “Switching to Toyos is a big change for us after so long on another brand but we are confident the move will pay off,” said team manager Rob Richardson. “Other competitors who have recently switched to the Toyos have been very positive about them.” The team is also looking forward to bolting Toyo tyres onto its rebuilt Jimco trophy truck, which has undergone an engine transplant in preparation for its debut at Finke. The Toyota-bodied truck now has a Toyota 6.0-litre NASCAR V8, which the team converted from carburettor to fuel injection, mated to a five-speed sequential gearbox. “There was nothing wrong with the 3.5-litre twin-turbo Toyota V6 we had in the truck but the V8 will make it lighter and we think the lack of turbo lag will make it more driveable,” said Richardson. “We’re very excited to reveal the driver of the V8 trophy truck in the coming weeks, but for now it’s a trade secret.” Meanwhile, fellow Team Toyo competitor Billy Geddes is planning to make history as the first to run the infamous Finke desert track twice - first in his Geiser Brothers trophy truck
Australia’s leading independent tyre distributor.
Billy Geddes will run the 2014 Finke Desert Race in a car and not a motorbike – the first time a competitor has attempted the ‘dual run’
and then on a KTM enduro bike. “After our rollover at Goondiwindi in 2012 I took the time to consider what I wanted to achieve in the sport,” he said. “That’s when the idea of the Finke dual run came about; attempting something that no one had ever accomplished.” After last year’s comfortable win in AORC class four and fourth outright in the championship, Geddes has used the off-season to hone his truck. “We’re running a much better allround setup this year, including moving up to 39-inch Toyo tyres for Finke and possibly a few other races,” he said. “We may even run just one set of tyres down to Finke and back this year, because the Toyos can manage it without a drama.” Goondiwindi champion Brad Gallard will also run 39-inch Toyo tyres this year, with the seasoned veteran going for his third straight win at the ‘Gundy’ track.
“The 39-inch tyres really take it up to another level - you have to push even harder to get the car to slide, which I’m definitely not complaining about,” he said. “We’ve done a lot of work on the fuelling system, transmission and power steering; our car has always handled beautifully, and it now has the strength, reliability and power to back it up.” Winner of the 2013 ARB Series Danny Brown has switched from trucks to buggies this year, citing the sheer speed of the rearengined racers as his biggest motivation. “On most Australian tracks the buggies are faster,” he said. “The new buggy uses the same 35-inch Toyo tyres and twin-turbo Nissan engine as we ran in the trophy truck - so we’re very familiar with both - and I have to say I’m looking forward to getting into an 850-horsepower machine and seeing what it can do.”

Mark Webber: on the move
A
utódromo José Carlos Pace, Sao Paolo - November 24, 2013, and Mark Webber takes to the podium after finishing second to Sebastian Vettel in the final race of the Formula 1 Grand Prix season. There was nothing unusual in that: Webber had claimed 42 podiums in his previous 216 races. But as the Aussie strode forward to take the acclaim, he did so “overcome with emotion” knowing, as everybody else did, it would be the last time he would do so on the F1 stage. That was five months ago. Now, the 37-year-old is driving for Porsche in the World Endurance Championship. But he remains reflective – how could one not be after 11 magical years at the peak of motorsport? “I definitely am nostalgic about what’s happened
over the last decade or so,” the New South Wales-raised speedster begins. “I know people coming out of a sport often say it’s had a profound effect on their lives, but that really is true with F1. It was the whole drive behind moving to England and has formed the foundation for 11 great years both on the track and away from it. “But I’ve made the right call by deciding now to leave it behind,” he follows. “There aren’t that many drivers who clock up 11 seasons, and you can stay too long – it’s easy to.” And what length of service it has been. Moving from Formula 3 in 2002 (after a $100,000 donation from rugby legend David Campese kept his career on the road in 1997), Webber made his F1 debut in his home Grand Prix in March 2002
MARK’S MOTOR: THE 919 HYBRID
a carefully balanced overall concept. The combustion engine is a compact V four-cylinder petrol engine that also serves as a load-bearing member in the chassis. The engine has two litres displacement, direct fuel injection, single turbocharger and revs up to 9,000 rpm. Power is around 500 hp (368 kW). In addition, the Le Mans 919 Hybrid prototype has two energy recovery systems. There is a system that recovers thermal energy from exhaust gases via an electric generator driven by the exhaust gas stream. The second hybrid system has a generator on the front axle which utilises braking phases to convert kinetic energy into electric energy. Lithium-ion batteries serve as the energy storage medium. When the driver accesses this energy, an electric motor drives the front axle. This makes the 919 Hybrid an allwheel drive vehicle, albeit temporarily. Mark Webber will share driving duties in the new Porsche with Timo Bernhard from Germany and New Zealander Brendon Hartley.
T
he new Porsche 919 Hybrid celebrated its world premiere at the Geneva International Motor Show in March and it is a car that benefits from cutting-edge technology. “Crucial in the development of the Le Mans prototype were the newly created and revolutionary racing rules for this class as they relate to energy efficiency,” said Matthias Müller, Chairman of Porsche AG. “In 2014, it will not be the fastest car that wins the World Endurance Championship series and the 24 hours of Le Mans, rather it will be the car that goes the furthest with a defined amount of energy. And it is precisely this challenge that carmakers must overcome. The 919 Hybrid is our fastest mobile research laboratory and the most complex race car that Porsche has ever built.” The exceptional efficiency of the Porsche 919 Hybrid is the result of 26
when driving with Minardi. Aussie Paul Stoddart’s team’s first championship points in three years were secured as Webber finished the race in fifth. The following year he switched to Jaguar where, despite the limitations of the car, the driver’s reputation continued to grow, and within three years had landed at Red Bull (via Williams) where three 3rd-placed championship finishes cemented Webber’s reputation as one of the sport’s best in a generation. Along the way were nine F1 race wins, 13 poles and 19 fastest laps. There were dramas of both the personal kind, such as his on- and offtrack clashes with Red Bull team mate Sebastian Vettel, and of the competitive, most notably the horror smash in Valencia in 2010 that could easily have killed him, yet Webber has always treated obstacles with trademark good humour. “When you sign up for any type of motorsport you know the risks – it’s dangerous driving around at 200mph!
Certainly those risks are much more manageable than they were in the past, and that’s a comfort, but you know the score when you put that helmet on, and it will be just the same with the World Endurance Championships.” Yet Webber will be missed from Formula One not just thanks to his prowess on the track but because he has been one of the sport’s charismatic commanders honest, straight-talking and down-to-earth in an age of frequent displays of ego. For someone who invested almost a third of his life in F1, the quibbles are few and far between. That says a lot about Webber’s philosophy for sport, something he puts down to the upbringing he had in Queanbeyan. “Sport was a huge part of my childhood – in motorbikes, Aussie rules, tennis, cricket and more – but we always knew when the game ended, and being able to put the competition to one side has been important for me staying grounded throughout my career. And I’ll continue like that with Porsche. “My father and I would always watch Formula One together on the television. He owned a motorbike shop and made it pretty clear to me from a young age that he
Mark Webber racing for Red Bull during the 2012 Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix
didn’t want me to get involved in bikes! I guess he’d seen too many good guys come off second best. I was massively into sports like rugby league and it wasn’t until I was about 14 that I really got into racing karts.” And once cars were in his life, there was no looking back. He admits that a need for speed has been the principal factor behind his career choices, and
that’s no different now as he looks ahead to a career in the WEC. “Look, I’d be lying if I said it was anything other than putting the foot on the pedal and going as fast as you can! That is what I do it for, that is my passion and always was my passion from as soon as I could drive. I have had that passion from childhood and it will never leave me.”
MICHELIN AND PORSCHE TEAM UP IN WEC
M
ichelin is Porsche’s technical partner for the German manufacturer’s 2014 endurance racing programme. Indeed, Michelin played a part in the development of the new Porsche 919 Hybrid by designing speciallyadapted tyres for the LMP1 class prototype. In compliance with the 2014 sporting regulations for the FIA World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC) and Le Mans, the size of these tyres is 31/71-18, both at the front and the rear. Developed on a simulator for all of the firm’s LMP1 partners, the Michelin tyres on the Porsche 919 Hybrid were refined during testing sessions conducted jointly between the two firms’ technical teams. “Michelin was able to support Porsche in the development of its new 919 Hybrid thanks to our extensive expertise in endurance racing. The exchange of information
between the engineers at Porsche and Michelin resulted in the best possible synergy between our tyres and the Stuttgart manufacturer’s prototype,” said Pascal Couasnon, Director of Michelin Motorsport. Tyres play a key role both in terms of performance and in the management of the quantity of energy allocated to 2014 FIA WEC competitors by the regulations. The energy efficiency of the LMP1 prototypes depends, amongst
other factors, upon two fundamental parameters: their weight and their aerodynamic drag, both of which are significantly influenced by tyres. The tyres promote the car’s efficiency by working in synergy with the suspension. They need to be able to withstand the vehicle’s weight as well as its colossal aerodynamic loads, which can reach three times the mass of the car. Around certain circuits and on a dry track, the lateral and longitudinal acceleration generated by these prototypes can appreciably exceed 3G. Michelin’s 2014 tyres for LMP1 class prototypes are 15 per cent narrower than before (between 5cm and 6cm narrower). This represents an improvement both in terms of weight (a saving of 8kg per set of four) and aerodynamic drag. What’s more, these benefits are achieved without the need to sacrifice either the performance or durability of the tyre. 27

Kumho proves grip is the key to speed
Local racer Simon Hodge holds the new Adelaide Parklands Circuit lap record of 1:17.9726s
A
Kumho shod Formula 3 open wheeler has become the quickest car ever around the famed Adelaide Parklands Circuit. Local racer Simon Hodge set the blistering time of 1m 17.9726s on the seventh lap of the opening race of the 2014 Australian Formula 3 Championship - seven tenths of a second quicker than the previous record. Hodge’s Mygale Formula 3 car is powered by a 2.0L Mercedes engine with 230hp. The category demonstrates that
lower powered, lightweight cars paired with a high grip slick tyre is the equation for a quick lap time. Kumho is the control tyre supplier to Formula 3 and is an integral part of the ‘wings and slicks’ concept in Australia. According to record holder Simon Hodge, the Ecsta race tyre is an ideal match for the Formula 3 cars because of the abundance of grip it provides. “These are great cars with great tyres. It’s a really good combination,” said Hodge. “Looking back at the data it’s amazing
to see how late I was braking for the two hairpins - as late as 75 metres. “The grip was amazing. The direction change through the chicane was in excess of 160-170 kph and it just felt great,” he said. The South Australian won the round with a clean sweep of all three races but not without a strong challenge from Ben Gersekowski in the final. Formula 3 also holds the outright lap record at Queensland’s Morgan Park and New South Wales’ Wakefield Park - both set on Kumho tyres.

ankook Tyre has formed a new partnership, with New Zealand’s Brad Smith Racing’s Nissan 350Z, for an attack on the D1NZ National Drifting Championship. In conjunction with Hankook’s New Zealand distributor Value Tyres, the partnership mirrors the successful USA Formula Drift association with Chris Forsberg’s Hankook 370Z: Hankook claimed the 2013 Formula Drift Tyre Championship, with Forsberg - and all the Hankook drivers - using the Ventus R-S3 (Z222) competition designed road tyre. In New Zealand, Brad Smith Racing is geared for similar success for the final rounds of the 2013/2014 D1NZ season, and beyond. “We do things a little differently in NZ,” enthused Brad, “and following five years of competition in the series, to have Hankook on board will allow us to showcase our car, our sponsors, and the tyre that has had so much success in
Formula Drift. If we start to open some eyes to Hankook, then it’s a job done!” Hankook joins a number of high profile sponsors of Brad Smith Racing, including naming right sponsor, New Zealand’s gourmet burger brand, BurgerFuel, and UK premium tool brand Laser Tools NZ. Brad’s Nissan 350Z was purchased and modified specifically for drifting, with its centrepiece being a supercharged V6 engine (VQ35) producing around 350kW. Reports from Europe indicate that, after three million kilometres of testing with some of the leading European fleets, Pirelli has launched the Carrier line of tyres – a high-technology tyre developed specifically for vans. The company says the Carrier line guarantees a long tyre life, decreased fuel consumption thanks to a reduction in rolling resistance, better performance in the wet and increased comfort compared to previous generation tyres. Technology developed for the UHP segment, and state-of-the-art design criteria already successfully applied to the P Zero and Cinturato P7, was used to create the Carrier, albeit with an increased emphasis on two key factors for the van market – safety and total life cost.

Alcoa has rolled out what it claims is the world’s lightest heavyduty truck wheel – the Ultra ONE. The new 40-pound (18.1kg) wheel is 47 per cent lighter than steel wheels of the same size and five pounds (2.3kg) lighter than Alcoa’s previous lightest heavy-duty truck wheel.
The weight was shed in the Ultra ONE through the use of a new, patent-pending alloy, MagnaForce. Alcoa says this is on average 17 per cent stronger than its industry standard 6061 alloy. The Ultra ONE is available in size 22.5×8.25 inches for heavy-duty, commercial transportation, and is being readied in all OEM customer data books. “Alcoa continues to reinvent the wheel,” stated Tim Myers, president of Alcoa Wheel and Transportation Products. “Our new innovation is heavy-duty without the ‘heavy,’ and it looks great, too. Alcoa’s unique mix of manufacturing, technology and lightweight metals expertise enabled this breakthrough. Major fleets, such as TMC Transportation, are already lining up to take advantage of it.”

UK truck tyre wholesaler International Tyres has secured an exclusive agreement to introduce the Riken brand of truck, bus and coach tyres into the UK. According to the company, the UK introduction of the brand has been fuelled by “strong demand for mid-range products”. The launch will give hundreds of independent tyre dealers and fleets access to Riken commercial vehicle tyres for the first time - a fitment already popular in France, Germany, Spain and throughout Eastern Europe. “We expect the mid-range commercial vehicle replacement tyre market will follow the pattern we’ve seen in previous years and increase again in 2014,” said Andy Jackson, Director of International Tyres. “Dealers and fleets buying mid-range products are looking for a unique combination of quality and value – something we’re confident Riken can deliver. Riken is a Michelin-owned brand, which will help it stand out in a competitive market, and the tyres are developed specifically to suit European road and climate conditions.” continued page 32 31
