EDITOR’S WORD
H Jonathan Nash Editor
ello and welcome to the June/July edition of Australian Tyre Dealer magazine. The sad news of the passing of Sir Jack Brabham on May 19 has meant there has been much talk over the past few weeks about the life and career of the motor racing legend. A three-time Formula One world champion as a driver, Sir Jack’s tactical, business and engineering genius would see him not only collect two constructors’ world titles as well but, through his company Motor Racing Developments (MRD), he also became the world’s largest manufacturer of open-wheel race cars. To say his career was extraordinary barely does it justice, for it was marked by achievements most of us could only dream of. His legacy is equally as remarkable. The impact he had on the sport and the business is significant and his family - first through sons Geoff, Gary and David and now through his grandsons Matthew and Sam, continue to uphold the Brabham family name and tradition on race tracks around the world. In this edition we pay tribute to the great man and talk to his son Gary, a racing driver of distinction himself, about his father’s life, career and legacy Perhaps Australia has a new star of Formula One. Daniel Ricciardo, the young West Australian, scored his first F1 win in the Canadian Grand Prix driving a perfect race in the Infiniti Red Bull car, which

General Tire launches all-terrain range A ustralia’s hard core off-road drivers have a new choice in serious all-terrain tyres, with the launch of General Tire’s new Grabber SRL range. The range of go-anywhere tyres for medium and large fourwheel-drive vehicles, featuring ‘Smooth Red Lettering’ on the sidewall are aimed for drivers who go seriously off-road for work or play. Developed from General Tire’s Grabber competition tyres, which dominate American off-road racing, the new SRL enters a category renowned for making and breaking brand reputations, and where product performance is everything. “General Tire is a major player in the American off-road tyre market and our aim is to replicate that success here in Australia,” said Mitchell Golledge, Marketing Manager, Continental Tyres of Australia. “First step is to deliver class-leading product and we’ve certainly done that with the Grabber SRL. There isn’t a tougher, better performing hard core all-terrain tyre on the market here right now. “We know General’s reputation will be grown by this product and by the expertise we support it with.” The company says there’s no
mistaking the intent of General Tire’s new Grabber SRL. Tough three-ply DuragenTM reinforced casing construction combines with multi-angled sidewall protectors to ensure durability, while reactive Contour Technology ensures even tread wear throughout the life of the tyre. A patented ‘Strake & Chamfer’ tread pattern delivers deceptively high levels of traction in both mud and silt, while Acoustic Modulation Sound Technology reduces road noise on the highway. General Tire’s Grabber SRL range is further distinguished by its unique red-lettered sidewall. “Built on technology that’s thoroughly proven in the heat of competition, the Grabber SRL also adds an edge of refinement to its on-road performance to make it the perfect choice for serious off-road drivers,” said Mr Golledge. It is available in 15 inch, 16 inch and 18 inch fitments across five sizes to fit the most popular medium and large recreational and workhorse four-wheel-drive models on the Australian market. General Tire’s new Grabber SRL range is available from Continental Tyres retail stores and Bob Jane T-Marts across Australia.

Energy efficient tyres for mass market A new high energy efficiency tyre capable of being fitted to more than 50 per cent of all vehicles sold in Australia is now available without price premium. Japanese tyre maker Toyo Tires says its new NanoEnergy 3 tyre is intended to normalise energy efficiency. The tyre exceeds the benchmarks of safety and performance set by its mass market predecessor, the TEO Plus, while achieving high levels of fuel saving and improving the bottom line for dealers. “Early energy efficient tyres were once regarded as specialised with limited application,” Toyo’s general manager of tyres, Matthew Grovenor, said. “Now fuel saving through tyres has become such an obvious goal that it is essential for tyres intended for family and fleet use.” The new tyre has 23 per cent better rolling resistance than the TEO Plus, yet has nine per cent better wet weather braking performance from 100km/h and five per cent better dry weather performance. The NanoEnergy 3 tyre has been built to a new manufacturing code called ATOM - for Advanced Tyre Operation Module - which emphasises precision engineering to achieve consistently tighter manufacturing tolerances, resulting in higher levels of uniformity. The tyre subsequently requires less balance correction, equating to less time spent balancing tyres and less spent on balancing weights.

Toyo Tires new NanoEnergy 3
“The NanoEnergy 3 tyre has been built to a new manufacturing code called ATOM for Advanced Tyre Operation Module” Potential tyre life has been improved with the new tyre’s treadwear rating of 420 in comparison to the 300 rating found in the TEO Plus. Noise levels have also been reduced
with passing noise rated at just 69 decibels, at the low range of audio intrusion. A precision engineered product quality provides a new car feel, meaning less customer comebacks and higher levels of satisfaction. The NanoEnergy 3 will be available in a wide range of sizes from 14 to 17 inches and down to a 45 aspect ratio, suited to small, medium and large cars. A variation of the new tyre is already fitted as original equipment to the Mazda 3, which is vying for market leadership in Australia. Mr Grovenor said NanoEnergy 3 met the high standards of the newly introduced European tyre labelling requirements for energy efficiency, wet weather grip and noise. Tyre labelling, yet to be introduced in Australia, is similar to the Green Vehicle Guide on the windscreens of cars and energy guides on household goods. “Choosing replacement tyres based on low purchase price was increasingly recognised as a false economy,” said Mr Grovenor. “Families buy on rational criteria influenced by safety, mileage and value. “Fleet decisions are partially determined by fuel economy, health and safety requirements and frequency of replacement. “Tyres epitomised by NanoEnergy 3 provide safety and handling and make a contribution to reduced emissions and increased fuel savings, which are felt at the pumps.”
THE ALL-NEW NANOENERGY 3 Developed using Toyo’s Nano Balance Technology, the all-new NanoEnergy 3 delivers a longer-lasting tyre and provides 23% better rolling-resistance* to reduce fuel cost. Not to mention, a safer, smoother, quieter ride, that’s a whole lot of tyre without the price premium. Learn more at toyotires.com.au

Kumho plays key role with transport operator A major NSW based transport company is recording tyre mileage gains of up to 40 per cent since switching to Kumho KRD01 tyres on drive axles, and up to 35 per cent on steers compared with other tyres from other brands. Macleay Valley Transport, based in the NSW mid-north coast town of Kempsey, operates a fleet of 50 prime movers and more than 70 trailers hauling general freight, offering a broad service to the NSW Mid North Coast as well as providing interstate transport services for its customers, principally along the Eastern seaboard to Sydney, Brisbane and North Queensland. Company principal Bob Fuller says that the company switched to the Kumho KRD01 about four years ago on advice from a local tyre dealer and good reports from other operators as well as good pricing. “The driving force was the price because the Kumho’s were very competitive and in this business it

MVT regularly gets better than 200,000 km from the Kumho’s on the steer axles and better than 250,000 km from the KRD01 on the drive axles. The MVT fleet covers more than three million kilometres each year and now employs more than 80 staff including 65 drivers, making it one of the biggest employers in the Kempsey region. MVT is deeply committed to safety and as well as being highly aware of good tyres in maintaining a strong safety performance on the road it maintains full accreditation in Trucksafe which includes fatigue management, mass management and vehicle maintenance.
THE FUTURE OF TYRES TURNS TO INTELLIGENT TREAD DESIGN
A
ccording to a futurology report commissioned by Dunlop as part of the Dunlop Future Race Car Challenge, racing car drivers of the future may experience intelligent tyres that will adapt to the needs of the driver and the track. They can expect to see shape changing materials such as polymer gels that will enable tyres to change shape and size to suit the race and the track, even in the most gruelling of weather conditions. If a tyre begins to wear, layers of microspikes could be activated to surface the tyre on demand, increasing the grip and reducing drag around the toughest of corners. Renowned futurologist Dr. Ian Pearson, author of the report, also believes that graphene will be a key material leading the way in motorsports. “Graphene flakes could be placed in tyres to not only give excellent grip, but allow more of the tyre surface to stay in contact with the road surface,” he said. The report is the beginning of Dunlop’s quest to explore what is in store for the future of motorsport. In launching the Dunlop Future Race Car Challenge, the company is encouraging fans to share their thoughts and ideas on how racing cars may look in 125 years. Michelin launches the Pilot Road 4 M ichelin has released the fourth generation of its motorcycle sport touring tyre range, the Pilot Road 4. Available in a choice of three versions - Standard, GT and Trail - the Pilot Road 4 rounds off the renewal of Michelin’s radial tyre offerings, which has included the introduction of seven more new ranges since 2012. Michelin says the Pilot Road 4 enhances safety but also rider confidence in a range of conditions, with testing showing it outperformed its nearest rival with a 17 per cent shorter stopping distance when braking on wet roads, while also improving its longevity over its predecessor, the Pilot Road 3, by 20 per cent. To achieve the improvement in performance, the Pilot Road 4 has been made featuring four key technologies and new all-silica compounds. The Michelin 2 CT (two compound technology), employs a softer compound for the shoulders and a more resistant compound for the centre of the tread to
prolong tyre life and optimise grip. The Michelin XST (X-Sipe technology) enables the tyre to grip the road better with the transverse and longitudinal sipes improving braking performance and optimising traction and acceleration performance. The company says its patented Michelin 2AT (Dual Angle) Technology provides the Pilot Road 4 GT with a rigidity to optimise stability when cornering, as well as on straights, for heavier bikes. Michelin says the technology, which is the result of five years of research, provides a 15 per cent gain in terms of rigidity compared with a conventional tyre through its innovative manufacturing process. The plies of the tyre are laid at different angles which offer a combination of greater rigidity for heavy bikes and flexibility for enhanced comfort. So much research and testing went into the development of the Pilot Road 4 that six patents were registered during development and more than 2,000,000 kilometres were covered during testing.

CONTINENTAL DOMINATES EUROPEAN TYRE TESTS
C
ontinental Tyres has claimed top spot on the tyre test podium, with numerous European automotive media outlets recently singling it out as their tyre brand of choice. German magazine Auto Motor und Sport named Continental’s ContiPremiumContact 5 number one, while Auto Bild Allrad chose the ContiSportContact SUV tyre as equal best for an SUV. These accolades follow on from those received earlier this year by Auto Bild and Auto Club Europa, where the ContiSportContact 5 and ContiSportContact 5 P outshone the competition. The readers of Auto Bild and Auto Zeitung also named Continental as, respectively, the best car tyre brand in
Germany and their top tyre brand for 2013. “These tyre test results coming out of Europe are incredibly pleasing,” said Mitchell Golledge, Marketing Manager, Continental Tyres of Australia. ContiSportContact 5
“For years now, Europe’s top vehicle manufacturers have put their faith in our tyres, with one in every three automobiles made there rolling out of the factory on Continental tyres - and it’s great to see that recognition and acknowledgement in the media also.” The publications were all unanimous in their praise of Continental using phrases such as “best in test”, “precise”, “very balanced”, “precise handling” and “extraordinary short stopping distances”. Continental is one of the top four tyre manufacturers in the world, with its range providing the benefits of an extensive product offering combining excellent braking, maximum grip and low rolling resistance tyres, all with high safety properties. 9

Continental launches ultimate performance tyre C ontinental Tyres has introduced its ultimate high performance tyre, the ContiForceContact. Developed specifically for enthusiasts who attend track days using their high performance road cars, the ContiForceContact is fully road-legal and is suitable for wet conditions. “Traditionally the choices drivers faced when wanting tyres for track days were limited to “hard core” “R spec” road /race tyres which were not always suitable for day to day road use, meaning a tyre swap before they hit the track,” said Jeff Moorhead, Product and Pricing Manager, Continental Tyres of Australia. “The ContiForceContact differs in that it has been developed to be used legally and safely on the road, even in wet conditions, as well as performing on the track, without compromising either. “The secret is its combination of a soft tread compound, shallow tread depth and a reinforced tyre casing construction, to ensure that the tyre delivers the ultimate combination of grip, performance and stability at high speed.” Evolved through an extensive

development programme, the ContiForceContact features both an asymmetric tread pattern and enhanced construction for premium performance capability. The shallower than normal tread depth - 5mm rather than the
usual 8mm - ensures tread block stability for performance, but sufficient tread to effectively evacuate water, making it suitable for wet conditions on road and track. “Our new ContiForceContact fills the gap that previously existed between top level ultra-high performance tyres and the ‘R type’ treaded road race tyres that have emerged in recent years,” Mr Moorhead said. “It’s ideal for enthusiasts attending track days and will also appeal to those competing in tarmac road rallies and other touring events.” The ContiForceContact is available through select Continental Tyre dealerships in each state interested customers should contact Customer Service on 1300 266 844 to find their local stockist. It is available in a range of 18 inch, 19 inch and 20 inch rim sizes to suit high performance models from Porsche, Lexus, McLaren, Aston Martin, VW, Lamborghini, Mercedes Benz AMG, Audi, BMW M-Sport, Jaguar, Maserati, Ferrari, Honda, Renault, HSV and FPV.
MICHELIN INVENTS THE “ANTI-LANDMINE” TYRE
M
ichelin has launched a new military tyre product, designed to help clear safe pathways through areas studded with land mines. The manufacturer worked with the French military and defence systems manufacturer MBDA in the development of the tyre, which is designed to exert less ground pressure than a man’s footfall when fitted to a vehicle weighing more than 7.5 tonnes. That vehicle is the SOUVIM II mine clearing system, whose purpose is to move across land mines without triggering detection systems. 10
The tyre enables the SOUVIM II to manoeuver over flat land mines without being detected and can deform around the tops of conical land mines without activating them. This makes it possible to demine paths of up to 150km in length per day at an average speed of 20 km/h. Following delivery of the SOUVIM II vehicles for testing in 2013, Michelin’s LX PSI 710/75R34 anti-land mine tyres passed every stealth test, earning original equipment certification for the SOUVIM II.

he tributes came flooding in within minutes of the news being made public. Twitter and Facebook - the new social media avenues by which many now choose to express themselves - were soon filled with words of praise and admiration for a man, a career, a legacy, and a life well-lived. The television news reports, the newspapers and websites would soon follow, their message clear: Sir Jack Brabham was a true Australian original - a pioneer, a sporting icon, a legend of motor racing. With Sir Jack Brabham’s death on May 19, another link to the golden years of motor racing and Formula One passes away. It was an era of risk-taking and innovation; when legendary drivers such as Stirling Moss, Jackie Stewart, Jim Clark, Graham Hill, John Surtees, Bruce McLaren, Brabham himself . . . the list goes on . . . charged around circuits in cars designed with barely a thought for driver safety, only for speed. And it was in this era that Jack Brabham would stake his claim as not only the greatest motor racing driver Australia has ever produced, but one of the greatest ever . . . from anywhere. An audacious claim? Well, let’s put it this way: Amongst the names listed above, only two have won three Formula One World Championships – Jack Brabham and Jackie Stewart, and only Brabham won a World Championship in a car that he helped design and build and which carried his name. 16
“He was an extremely talented driver and deceptively fast . . . He was a hugely important part of motor-racing history.” Three-time World Champion Sir Jackie Stewart Think about that and you’ll probably agree with the words written in tribute to Brabham by Ron Dennis, boss of the McLaren Formula One team: “The word ‘legend’ is often used to describe successful sportsmen, but often it exaggerates their status,” said Dennis. “In the case of Sir Jack Brabham, however, it’s entirely justified.” Born in Huntsville, NSW, in 1926, Jack Brabham served in the RAAF during the latter part of WWII, using the mechanical and engineering skills he had learned at school and college to become a flight mechanic. Discharged in 1946, he opened a small motor repair and machine shop and it was here that he had his first contact with the world of motor racing when he met Johnny Schonberg, an American who raced dirt track midget cars.
“He was a trailblazer; he took the hardest road and made it easier for the rest of us to follow” Australian Former F1 driver Mark Webber Brabham agreed to build a midget car for Schonberg and would, in fact, end up racing in the format himself. And with great success too, taking out the NSW title in 1948. By then the racing bug had well and truly bitten and more championship wins would follow in other racing ventures, including hill climbing and road racing - ventures that would bring him into contact with Ron Tauranac, with whom Brabham would form not only a long-standing friendship but also a partnership that would be crucial to his future success. By 1955, Brabham was ready to test himself on the world stage. Moving to the UK, he struck up a relationship with the race car manufacturer Cooper Cars, a relationship that would prove most fruitful. It was, in many ways, mutually beneficial, with Brabham and Cooper utilising each other’s skills and knowledge to develop the cars Brabham would drive. It would lead to the radical decision to shift the engine from the front of the car to the back – a move that made the car more stable with better handling. It was a decision that would be copied by all F1 constructors within three years. By 1959 Brabham, now driving the Cooper T51, was set to make his run at the world title and the team, with Brabham and teammate Bruce McLaren, secured three race wins and eight podium finishes from the nine race season. Nontheless, the drivers’ championship race was tight decided at the last race of the season, at Sebring, in Florida. Brabham’s closest rivals, Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks, were just a few points behind and, though the odds were stacked in Brabham’s favour, nothing could be certain. And so it nearly proved. In extraordinary scenes, and as he was leading, Brabham ran out of fuel with just a few hundred metres to go. Stranded, Brabham leapt from the car and, in a feat of strength and tenacity, pushed his Cooper across the line before dropping to the ground in exhaustion. Several cars had overtaken him, but he had done enough. “When I pushed the car over the line I didn’t realise what position I was in as far as the world championship was concerned,” Brabham told ABC television in 2009. “It was a big thrill to me to find out, after I was exhausted on the ground, that I’d actually won the championship.” Brabham repeated his championship success the following year, amassing five race victories on his way to the title, this time in a Cooper T53, and his input into the development of the cars, and his skill in steering them to two championship victories brought words of admiration from team boss, John Cooper: “You don’t tell Brabham what tactics to adopt,” he said. “You simply keep him informed, during the race, of the general picture, and leave it to him to act as he sees fit.” 1961 would prove to be a difficult season. Other manufacturers, following Brabham and Cooper’s lead, had embraced the concept of rear-engine cars and had moved ahead. Brabham knew he could do better. So, in 1962, with friend and designer Ron Tauranac, Brabham became a constructor, setting up Motor Racing

Developments (MRD), a company whose success in designing, developing and building race cars for the Brabham Racing Organisation team would lead to a customer list that would eventually make Brabham the largest manufacturer of open-wheel racing cars - by 1970 the company had produced 500 race cars across different racing classes. Brabham’s first Formula One product, the BT-3, made its debut at the German Grand Prix of 1962 and though he was able to score championship points with it – becoming the first driver/constructor to do so - it wasn’t until the 1964 season when the team, using the BT7 car, scored their first F1 win. By 1966, the years of development and testing were to pay off with the BT19, and Brabham was once again to show his tactical and engineering brilliance. A rule change for the season meant F1 cars were now allowed to use 3-litre engines. But whereas his rivals opted to chase the extra power available through new V12 engines, Brabham took the risk of looking at a less powerful, but lighter, more reliable and more fuel efficient V8 developed in partnership with Australian company Repco. The decision was a stroke of genius and Brabham reeled off four first-place finishes as he became the first, and likely only, driver to win a world championship in a car he had helped design and build, and which carried his name. And with his teammate, New Zealander Denny Hulme, finishing fourth that season, Brabham also secured the constructor’s title. It was, and remains, a remarkable, and unique, achievement. “It was a thrill, to not only build your own car but to win races with it was terrific,” said Brabham in later years. “Winning the world championship in ’66 was really the continued page 18 17
pinnacle of the whole thing, because to win a championship with an Australian made engine was a fantastic feather in our cap.” 1966 would be the last of Brabham’s Formula One championships. He would continue to race for a further four seasons, and would continue to perform well, finishing runner-up to Hulme in 1967 and securing another constructor’s title in the process. He would take his final F1 victory in 1970 at the South African Grand Prix. He retired that year, aged 44, and seemed to remove himself entirely from Formula One, selling his F1 interests and returning to Australia. The team that bore his name, however, would endure, and would continue to be successful for many years. For his astonishing achievements, a steady stream of recognitions were bestowed upon Brabham. He was awarded an OBE, the Order of Australia, was named Australian of the Year, and was knighted in 1979 - the first racing driver to be so honoured. By the late 1990’s poor health was beginning to take hold of Sir Jack. Deafness brought on by decades of racing without ear protection, fading eyesight and kidney problems that required dialysis treatment restricted his activities. However, he was still making public appearances up until the very end. On the day before his death he made an appearance on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast where one of his classic race cars, the 1967 BT23, is now kept. A brilliant engineer, Sir Jack Brabham helped develop the sport of Formula One into the specatcle it is today.
As a driver he was skilled and fiercely determined, eliciting admiration from rivals: “I would say he was probably one of the toughest drivers I ever raced against,” said Stirling Moss. “Most of the drivers, once you’d passed them, you can forget about them, but Sir Jack, you never knew. He was always there, hunting along. He was competitive, I mean, he wanted to win.” And yet, for Brabham himself it wasn’t just about the driving: “I had just as much enjoyment out of being the mechanic and looking after and getting the cars to the line as I did out of driving,” he said. “The driving part was just relaxation after it had all happened.” .................... Though Sir Jack may be gone, his legacy will live on, and not just in the memories of those who saw him race; or in the black and white films of his victories; or in the museums which showcase his cars. The successful racing careers of his sons Geoff, Gary and David made sure the Brabham name continued to resonate with fans around the world through the 80s and 90s, and, now, Sir Jack’s grandsons, Matthew, who competes in the Indy Lights championship in the US, and Sam, who competes in Formula Ford in the UK, are making their mark. Who knows, the Brabham name could be gracing the race tracks of Monaco, Silverstone and Monza again within just a few years.
“Build them, race them, win them, we will never see another like the great Sir Jack Brabham.” Hollywood star Eric Bana

A SON’S PRIDE: GARY BRABHAM ON HIS FATHER’S LEGACY
I
“
was nine when he retired,” says Gary of his father and his racing career. “I don’t really remember much about him racing, but I do remember the people. Stirling Moss, Jim Clark, Graham Hill and John Surtees – all the old greats - used to come around for dinner.” That’s a dinner party any motor racing fan would have sold their right arm to be invited too, but it’s unlikely any such gathering would take place these days – the intense, media -fuelled rivalries of today’s Formula One are much different to the rivalries of Sir Jack’s heyday. Back then, life for an F1 driver was often too short to hold grudges. “There were a lot of deaths back then,” says Gary. “Dad lost 30 drivers in his time and because of the danger they tended to look out for each other.” Despite that danger, for Gary, as for his brothers, following his father into motor racing was inevitable. So, surely dad gave him lots of pointers and advice on what it took to be a race car driver? “I thought he would have been able to tell me all sorts of things about race craft and driving,” says Gary with a chuckle. “But his philosophy was that he couldn’t steer it for you. The only tip he gave me was to ‘keep it between the green bits’. “But then there was the engineering side of things. He showed me how to set the car up, to do the wheel alignments, the changing of gear ratios, that sort of thing. He did pass that on.” Having the Brabham name and the mighty Jack Brabham as dad might have made a few doors open slightly but the name could also be a burden for a young racer trying to strike out on his own “It was different,” says Gary. “His fame wasn’t so bad in childhood because you sort of just grew up with it. Later on, when I started racing, then there was a bit of pressure. “If you came fifth, then you knew the media would say ‘Well, he’ll never be as good as Jack’. And if you won, then they’d say ‘Well, no wonder, he’s Jack’s son.” Gary and his brothers did have plenty of success though, and that was one of the things of which Sir Jack was most proud. “Winning the World Championship in a car that bore his name and that was an all-Australian effort - that was an incredible achievement,” says Gary of one of Sir Jack’s proudest moments. “Another was winning his first Grand Prix in Monaco and getting presented the trophy by Princess Grace. “Another one took place in 1989. That year, Geoff, David and I all won an international motor racing championship: David won the British F3 Championship, I won the Formula 3000 Championship and Geoff

Sir Jack.
This painting was commissioned by Sir Jack Brabham in 1989 to celebrate another unique achievement by the family. Sir Jack's three sons, Geoff, Gary and David had each won an international motor racing series that year.
THE BRABHAM FAMILY’S involvement in motor sport now stretches to three generations. Sir Jack's sons had successful careers and two grandsons have begun racing as well: GEOFF BRABHAM, 62 Has raced mostly in the US, competing in 10 Indianapolis 500 races. With brother David, he won the Bathurst 1000 Super Touring Race in 1997 and with Gary, the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1991. Was also victorious at the 24-hour Le Mans in 1993. GARY BRABHAM, 53 British Formula 3000 champion in 1989. Won the 12 Hours of Sebring with brother Geoff in 1991. In 1993, Gary was the first Australian to qualify for the Gold Coast Indy. DAVID BRABHAM, 48 A two-time champion in the American Le Mans Series, David also won Le Mans in 2009 and, amongst many other racing achievements, drove for two seasons in Formula One MATTHEW BRABHAM, 20 Geoff’s son, Matthew is the reigning Pro Mazda Champion and has made a winning start in Indy Lights - the feeder series for the Indy Car Championship. SAM BRABHAM, 19 David’s son, Sam drives in the Formula Ford series in England. He placed fourth in the 2013 championship.
won the American Sports Car Championship. “Those are the three things he spoke about regularly.” With Sir Jack’s passing, the tributes that have come in show how much he meant to so many. But to Gary, Sir Jack Brabham’s legacy is more than the sum of his world championships, or the many cars he built, or the many races won. “The only way I can explain it is like this: You have sports people who do well, and then you have sports people who become superstars, but very few of them are pioneers in their sport. And that’s the thing that separates people like Dad. “I’m just really proud of him. Despite his success and fame, he was totally unaffected by it. He’d act the same way in public as he did at home. He was a very humble man. “That was him. He was just Jack.” 19

Dyno dynamics offering a money saver A ny workshop would benefit from the addition of a dynamometer, though the perceived costs can be a deterring factor for some. Dyno Dynamics created the entry level Dynotech dynamometer to offer basic dyno technology to the average workshop at an affordable price, with payment plan options available. “The fact is that a dyno will pay itself off, and often much quicker than you would think,” said Alan Evans, Managing Director of Dyno Dynamics. “For just $25 a day you can start offering a premium service and saving your workshop money.” “Payment for a dyno on a chattel mortgage over five year equates to roughly $150 a week. Repayment can be between 18 months to 3 years. A lot of customers have completely recouped the cost in 12 months, changed their business model completely and expanded their customer base.” There are many ways that a
dyno can save and even make you money. According to Evans, “the number one way dynos help workshops save money is time.” Historically, dynamometers have been perceived to be out-of-reach, with the average price range around $70,000 – 80,000. The basic 2WD Dynotech package is $34,965.50. Designed to simulate road conditions and add resistance accordingly, Dynotech Dynos accurately gauge air/fuel mixtures, maximum power/torque at
set RPM, intake and exhaust temperature, boost pressure and temperature before and after the intercooling phase, among other functions. The Dynotech is designed, developed and constructed by Dyno Dynamics Melbourne manufacturing facility, with a service offering which extends to full installation and 24/7 customer service. ContiPressureCheck helps transportation companies reduce costs W ith its tyre pressure monitoring system, ContiPressureCheck, Continental is helping transportation companies reduce their costs - because incorrect tyre pressure can be costly and dangerous. A slightly underinflated tyre flexes significantly, shortening its lifespan. The company says its calculations show that, on average, commercial vehicles on the road are approximately 12 per cent under-inflated. In the majority of cases this is gradual, and is the cause of more than 90 per cent of all punctures. Increased rolling resistance due to underinflated tyres results in additional fuels costs, as Continental’s calculations for heavy trucks show. If the pressure in the tyre is too high, this increases wear or makes the tyre wear unevenly, which also results in the tyre having to be replaced prematurely. Optimal tyre pressure also ensures that casings retain their retreadability, and therefore their value. ContiPressureCheck can help prevent unnecessary additional costs for fleet operators, with the system providing precise data on tyre pressure and temperature, and is a valuable indicator for efficient fuel and tyre management in the fleet.
It enables the driver to monitor tyre condition in real time, and to react quickly if there is a deviation from the defined value. The system comprises one 2cm long transmitter which weighs less than 20 grams including the sensors, and a processor, which is affixed to the inside of the tyre tread in a rubber bracket. When the tyre is changed, it can be removed from the bracket and reused in the new tyre. The battery lasts six years, or approx. 600,000km. The system also includes a receiver installed in the vehicle frame and a display in the cab. ContiPressureCheck works with all tyre brands and all vehicles.
“With ContiPressureCheck haulers can save hard cash because the service life of the tyre is maximised while fuel consumption is minimised. So it’s not surprising that ContiPressureCheck is seeing such an extraordinarily high level of market acceptance,” Herbert Mensching, Director of Marketing and Sales for Truck Tyres for Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) said. “We are delighted with the consistently positive feedback we have received from customers in countries across the world regarding the practicality of ContiPressureCheck.” The ContiPressureCheck will be available in Australia later this year.

Michelin to be sole supplier to MotoGP D orna Sports, the promoter and organizer of the MotoGP World Championship, has announced that Michelin is to be the sole supplier of tyres to MotoGP from 2016. The announcement comes just a few weeks after Bridgestone had declared it would be withdrawing from supplying the series after the 2015 season. Interested tyre manufacturers were able to request the technical specifications from Dorna, and three potential tyre suppliers initially expressed an interest before Michelin alone made a formal tender before the May 22 deadline. “Our policy of carrying over our technologies from track to street fits perfectly with the new technical regulations which are due to be introduced in 2016 and which will dictate the use of 17-inch wheels,” said Michelin Motorsport Director, Pascal Couasnon, commenting on how the discipline serves as a
proving ground for technological innovations. “That is why Michelin decided to submit a bid following the tender process instigated by Dorna Sports. “We take this opportunity to thank the governing bodies for the confidence they have placed in us today. Their confidence recognizes Michelin’s expertise and the 26 Riders’ world titles it has secured.” On announcing its withdrawal, Bridgestone said they had achieved the objectives it set out for itself in MotoGP, including that the development and supply of MotoGP tyres had been a major boost to its technical ability and brought a number of benefits that had enhanced Bridgestone’s brand globally. In a statement, Bridgestone expressed ‘its deepest gratitude to the riders, teams and all parties concerned, as well as motorsport fans around the world, for their support over the years.’ The company also reiterated
its commitment to motorsport generally as part of its new portfolio of activities. “It is with some sadness that we will make our exit from MotoGP after such a prosperous participation in the sport,” said Kyota Futami, General Manager, Global Motorsport Department, Bridgestone Corporation. “Yet, having achieved everything we set out to do when we entered the championship over ten years ago, including sharing in many MotoGP World Championships, our company believes it is the right time to implement an exit strategy from the series. “Over the next two seasons we will continue our world-class level of support to all the teams and riders, and will keep investing heavily in our MotoGP tyre development programme. We will continue to push the boundaries of motorcycle tyre development over the next two years to ensure that we leave the championship at the end of 2015 in the best way possible.”

To harness this power Bridgestone will fit the SP7 with Battlax V02 racing slicks, constructed with its latest “GP belt” technology. The historic Motorcycle brand, which will also compete in the FIM eRoad-Racing World Cup, was Belgium’s first Motorcycle brand when it was established in 1850. The team has always put a strong emphasis on racing to advance its technology, a tradition that has continued with the 2014 Saroléa SP7. Designed and built in Belgium, the SP7 motorcycle showcases the company’s latest developments in technology. The bike is built up around the innovative carbon fibre monotube chassis and its ultra efficient axial flux motor. During the design process the
focus was on achieving a high power to weight ratio and on aerodynamic efficiency. Extensive use of carbon fibre and lightweight alloys helped reduce the overall weight. The result is a very compact and agile motorcycle. The partnership initiative is seeded from Bridgestone’s commitment to a future with sustainable mobility. This is underpinned by the Corporation’s long-term environmental vision
which focuses on ecological conservation, resource conservation and reduction of CO2 emissions. “This Bridgestone partnership is an exciting opportunity to combine our MotoGP experience with our vision of sustainable mobility. The Saroléa superbike is blazing a trail for electric motorcycles and e-racing” said José Enrique Gonzales, Director Marketing, Bridgestone Europe.

Audi victorious at Le Mans I t was a disappointing return to Le Mans for Mark Webber and his Porsche team as the former Formula One star was forced to retire in the 22nd hour of the 24hour endurance classic with his car suffering powertrain problems. Instead, it was Audi who returned to the podium, taking a one-two victory with their R18 e-tron quattro cars, with the team of Marcel Fässler, André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer scoring the win - their third at the famed race. It marked the 13th Le Mans success for Audi and was a sweet victory over the strong competition offered by Porsche and Toyota.
“We’ve seen many exciting races and celebrated great victories at Le Mans but this success has a very special significance,” said Professor Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi AG. “We didn’t enter this race as favourites and in Porsche and Toyota had two very strong rivals. That we managed to win Le Mans is a fantastic achievement by the whole Audi squad.” The team of Marcel Fässler, André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer took the lead for the first time on Sunday morning after having put consistent pressure throughout the night on the leading Toyota.

In the hectic first hours, Audi, Porsche and Toyota were fighting captivating duels and, though the Audi had to have its turbocharger changed dropping it to third place, it moved back to the front after its return with Lotterer setting the fastest lap of 3m 22.567s. “It was a brilliant race for us,” said Fässler. “The spectators saw a spectacular race in which the tables kept turning and that was unpredictable and thrilling through to the final hours. We were within striking distance for a long time, then led the race, and then lost ground again. In the end, fortune was on our side.” After a thrilling start to the race with changing weather conditions, numerous accidents and a relatively calm night, Webber’s Porsche teammate Timo Bernhard took the top spot after 20 of the 24 hours. He handed the leading car over to Webber but less than 20 minutes later Webber was forced to slow down and drove solely on electric power back to pit lane. “That was tough for everyone. It would have been such an amazing achievement to go through to the finish,” said Webber. “I think we never expected to be in such a great position towards the end of the race. Few people know how hard it is to get the cars to this point in the race. “There is never ever a good retirement in Le Mans, but today is one of the best you could probably have in a way, because we went so far and we learned so much. If you stop early, you learn nothing and it’s tough. When you stop with a lap to go it’s probably even more brutal. It was our first time here at Le Mans and we were very close to the podium.“

Rentsch and BFGoodrich claim Finke victory
Shannon and Ian Rentsch took out the Finke Desert Race
B
FGoodrich Tires partners have claimed the top five places at the 2014 Finke Desert Race, with father/son duo Shannon and Ian Rentsch crossing the line first to claim the title of ‘King of the Desert’. Held each year on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, the Finke Desert Race is one of the biggest annual sporting events in the Northern Territory and has the reputation of being one of the most difficult off-road courses in one of the most remote places in the world. And the Rentsch team had to grab their win the hard way after a tough start to the weekend that saw them working on mechanical problems before the race had even begun. Driving their #1 JIMCO 2010 Nissan 3500cc the duo, who now have three Tatts Finke Desert Race titles to their credit, made the home trip from Finke to the Alice Springs finish in a time of 1 hour 47 minutes and 56 seconds for a total event time of 3 hours 28
37 minutes and 2 seconds. Speaking after the race Shannon Rentsch said they had a troubled build-up to the race with buggy trouble not being resolved until the afternoon before Prologue. “But from the start line yesterday everything went well,” he said. “This is the 12th time we have done Finke. This is the biggest race on our calendar and it’s the race everyone wants to win. We have been in a winning position before and haven’t made it so victory is an awesome feeling.” Shannon again thanked the performance of his BFGoodrich tyres. “We have always run on BFGoodrich Tires, and once again they did the job we demanded of them – they’ve played a big part in this win!” In second place was Jack Rhodes and David Pullino, also on BFGoodrich tyres. Coming home third was the #13 OBR BFGoodrich Tires Jimco of Travis Robinson and Paul Currie, with their
OBR teammates Beau Robinson and Ken Skinner coming home fourth. Beau and Ken also took out the Extreme 2WD Class win. After winning the previous round at Kalgoorlie outright, the class victory at Finke gave them valuable championship points. Matt Hanson and Leigh Wells completed the top five lock out for BFGoodrich Tires in their #3 Jimco. The Australian Off Road Championship now heads to Waikerie in South Australia for the third round of the season, the Riverland Enduro.

Ricciardo scores debut F1 victory R ED Bull’s F1 rookie, Daniel Ricciardo, has confirmed his growing status as a true Formula One challenger by taking out the Canadian Grand Prix in an accident-strewn race. The 24-year-old from West Australia was in brilliant form as he took advantage of the sudden fragility of the dominant Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg to secure a debut win in his debut season. The power of the Mercedes fell away in Canada with both Rosberg and Hamilton suffering engine problems. Hamilton was unable to finish the race while Rosberg battled to stay in, eventually taking second position on the podium.
“I’m a grand prix winner!” he said. “I think it still seems a bit surreal to be honest, just because it all happened so quickly at the end.” Four-time champion Sebastein Vettel managed to find some form in the second Red Bull car, taking third place. The Caterham and Lotus teams failed to finish the race while Sergio Perez in the Force
India car, and Felipe Massa in the Ferrari collided on the penultimate lap, taking both drivers out of the race and forcing the finish under safety car conditions. But the day belonged to the young Australian who started from sixth position and now finds himself in third spot in the championship standings after smart use of the new engine’s power system propelled him past Rosberg towards the end of the race. “I’m a grand prix winner!” he said. “I think it still seems a bit surreal to be honest, just because it all happened so quickly at the end. I was third for a while and then it all happened in a really exciting fashion. Once I got past Perez I knew I just had to drive clean and get in Rosberg’s DRS zone and, from then on, it was just awesome. “Finishing under the safety car made it a bit weird, but I wanted to make sure the two drivers who were in the accident were okay before I started celebrating. We achieved a great result today with first and third – so let’s enjoy it – but we will still have some work to do also. This will motivate the guys to work even harder and find even more, so I’m sure it will keep coming even better for us at the next few races.”

Michelin stays tough at Phillip Island T he performance of the new Michelin tyre developed in partnership with Porsche motorsport was tested at the Phillip Island round of the Porsche Carrera cup in May. The format of the round required teams to conduct a driver change at the halfway point of each one hour race. After a chaotic race one, that saw the top three Championship contenders get caught up in accidents, it was Michelin Ambassador Craig Baird and his co-driver Max Twigg who kept out of trouble. The pair claimed the race win, the first win for Baird of the season. “Max and the team did a great job today. Our Michelin tyres were performing strongly in the first stint so we chose not to change them in the pitstop. This saved us valuable time. Once everyone had pitted we were third with good car speed which allowed us to take the win. “There was no drop off in performance of the tyres. Even after an hour’s racing we were lapping at the same speed as we were at the start,” said Baird. Race two was another thrilling race with the Championship contenders fighting back through the field. It was Nick Percat who claimed the win from Stephen Grove. Grove and his co-driver for the weekend Scott McLaughlin also took out the outright round victory. “Not changing our tyres during either one hour race turned out to be the perfect strategy; it meant we could come in, do a driver change, and push as soon as we got back out on track. “When Scott jumped in for the final stint he pushed hard to close the gap to the front guys and worked his way up into second place. He was still able to set some of his quickest laps of the weekend through to the end of the race.” said Grove. The Michelin Cup N2 tyre has been designed to match the demands of the German manufacturer in terms of durability and performance. 30

This weekend clearly demonstrates that challenge has been met. The eventful Pro-Am round delivered some new podium finishers, however Warren Luff remains in the lead of the Championship. Steven Richards held onto second place, while the biggest mover of the round was Craig Baird, who jumped to third in the Championship standings.

SCHUMACHER SHOWING SIGNS OF RECOVERY SEVEN-TIME Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher has begun to show signs of recovering from the terrible head injuries he suffered after a skiing accident late last year. The 45-year-old German had been in a medicallyinduced coma at a hospital in Grenoble, south-east France, since the accident on December 30. He had been on holiday with his family in the French Alps when he fell, smashing his head on rocks. Airlifted to hospital, his condition had been critical with many experts warning he may never wake up. But after six months, Schumacher has, it is reported, been roused from his coma and been moved to the Laussane University Hospital in Switzerland. In a statement, Schumacher’s manager, said: “Michael has left the CHU Grenoble to continue his long phase of rehabilitation. He is not in a coma anymore.” The precise nature of his current condition is unknown but it is likely, experts said, that Schumacher would be in rehabilitation for years. 32
