EDITOR’S WORD
W
Jonathan Nash Editor
elcome to the February/ March edition of Australian Tyre Dealer. 2015 has begun with the news that Bridgestone Australia has joined Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) - a move that strengthens both TSA and the Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme that it advances. The Scheme is designed to tackle the issue of end-of-life tyres by, amongst other things, promoting the use of recycled tyres into other products and a commitment through an accreditation and auditing system that will reassure consumers of the responsible practices of Scheme participants. Speaking at the event announcing his company is joining the TSA, Bridgestone’s Managing Director Andrew Moffatt said, “We believe we are leading by example, and see the TSA as a very important vehicle in helping educate the consumer and bring national focus and real solutions to the critical issue of waste tyres in Australia.” In our ongoing series of interviews with tyre industry leaders ATD talks to Michael Rudd, the CEO of Toyo Tires and Rubber Australia. It is an important year for Toyo, internationally and locally - it is 40 years ago this year that the company started its business operations in Australia and 70 years since the company was established in Japan. Mr Rudd touches on the importance of 2015 to the company as well as covering many other topics including the company’s involvement with Motorsport, environmental practices and innovation through R&D. The interview offers intriguing insight into one of Australia’s most important tyre companies. The interview starts on page 16.
In other news, we take a look at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit and, in particular, the debuts of the production supercars, the Ford GT and the Acura NSX - both are outstanding works of vehicular art. Holden, or rather the design team at Holden, also made themselves known at the Show - winning an award for their work on the Buick Avenir and being noted for their input on the new Chevy Bolt. With the Motorsport season having kicked off in earnest in February with the Monte Carlo Rally, and the Formula One competition about to commence with the Australian Grand Prix in March, you’ll find a Motorsport calendar on page 31 with dates for all the major championship races for the year. We reckon it’s well worth making a note of the Formula One race dates. After a stellar debut season which saw him take third place in the championship - and claim No.1 driver status with the Red Bull team - 2015 could see the elevation of Aussie Daniel Ricciardo to Champion status. Almost universally recognised as one if the most gifted drivers of recent years, watching Ricciardo battle with the superstars of the F1 track will be an exciting and intriguing spectacle. As always, feel free to drop me a line if you have some news you would like to share with the industry, I look forward to hearing from you. Cheers

Bridgestone joins Tyre St
Bridgestone Australia Managing Director Andrew Moffatt, Tyre Stewardship Australia Chairman Gerry Morvell and Parlimentary Secretary to the Minister for the Environment Bob Baldwin
T
yre Stewardship Australia (TSA) now has the support of Bridgestone Australia as it looks to reduce the impact of end-of-life tyres. The tyre major announced it had joined the TSA, and taken a Board position with the organisation, at an event held at the Bridgestone Bandag manufacturing facility in Brisbane last month and joins other major manufacturers including Continental, Goodyear Dunlop, Michelin, Pirelli, Toyo and Yokohama – which have already signed up. TSA is also backed by the Australian Motor Industry Federation and the Minerals Council of Australia, with the support of Federal and State/Territory Governments. The TSA was formed to implement the Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme which aims to promote the increase in environmentally sustainable collection and recycling processes and to explore and promote new uses for, and products

“At Bridgestone, we take a multifaceted approach to ensuring we do everything we can to lower our impact on the environment.” using, recycled end-of-life tyres. Usages for tyre-derived products include road surfacing, soft-fall playground surfacing, industrial and commercial flooring and even explosives. The Scheme will recognise sustainable end-of-life tyre management through an accreditation and auditing system and enable consumers to identify participants in the Scheme through TSA signage at retail outlets and
by visiting the TSA website. The Bridgestone announcement was attended by Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for the Environment Bob Baldwin MP, TSA Chairman Gerry Morvell and Bridgestone Australia Managing Director Andrew Moffatt. Mr Moffatt said the decision to join TSA was a natural extension of Bridgestone’s commitment to the environment. “At Bridgestone, we take a multi-faceted approach to ensuring we do everything we can to lower our impact on the environment,” Mr Moffatt said. “This includes our fuelsaving low rolling resistance Ecopia technology - which lowers emissions and is being progressively introduced across our passenger car, 4WD and truck tyre ranges, our Bandag retread process, which ensures tyre casings are reused rather than wasted, and our commitment to use only authorised tyre recyclers throughout our dealer network.”
ewardship Australia “We believe we are leading by example, and see the TSA as a very important vehicle in helping educate the consumer and bring national focus and real solutions to the critical issue of waste tyres in Australia.” “Of the approximately 48 million end-of-life tyres created annually in Australia, only 16 per cent are currently recycled. The rest are disposed to landfill, stockpiled, illegally dumped or exported overseas,” said TSA Chairman Gerry Morvell. “We welcome Bridgestone to Tyre Stewardship Australia. Their participation will add to the considerable strength of this cooperative industry endeavour and will help address the physical management of end-of-life tyres. “We are confident that Bridgestone will also play a major role in gaining public recognition and support for the industry’s efforts to address this environmental challenge.
“Bridgestone joins companies across the tyre supply chain getting behind Tyre Stewardship Australia.”
“The announcement today by Bridgestone is a very important step for both organisations. The reason it is important for TSA is that with Bridgestone joining, all of the major tyre importers and their chains are now represented and that means, with the backing of government – and we do have the backing of the Federal government and all of the State and Territory governments – we will be able to pursue our objectives with a lot more vigour.” The Australian Government also welcomed the news. “Bridgestone joins companies across the tyre supply chain getting behind Tyre Stewardship Australia,” said Bob Baldwin. “These companies want to make a real difference to address the management of end-of-life tyres, and we are proud to support this initiative.” It has been a year since the TSA was launched by Minister for the Environment Greg Hunt and Bridgestone was not part of the original scheme. However, negotiations have clearly settled whatever issues the company had at the time. “It was just a matter of us aligning our philosophies and entering into discussion with TSA to fully understand where they were going and making sure they were aligned with where we wanted to go,” said Mr Moffatt. “And it does align. The TSA people have been terrific. We have had very good and open discussions with them, and now the time is right for us to join. “We have a lot to offer. We are a large player in the tyre industry in Australia and we’ve taken a very strong view of handling of waste tyres within our family channel network. We believe we can bring a lot to the table with TSA and we believe we can contribute positively, so the time is right to join. TSA wants Bridgestone there, we want to be a part of it and continue to be a leader in the industry.” The Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme will be funded through an ACCC approved levy of 25 cents per new passenger equivalent tyre sold in Australia.

Bridgestone invests in solar for Bandag plant
B
ridgestone has strengthened the environmental commitment of its Australian operations, switching on a major solar panel network that will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Two 100 kilowatt solar power systems have been installed at Bridgestone’s Bandag manufacturing facility in Wacol, Brisbane. More than 350 peak solar panels have been installed on the factory’s roofing, which is also used to harvest 265,000 litres of rainwater that then cools equipment at the plant. Another 400 panels were fitted to the roof of the Quality Tyre Sales business on the same site. Bridgestone Australia Managing Director Andrew Moffatt said the project was part of Bridgestone’s ongoing mission to lowering its impact on the environment. “At Bridgestone, we take our responsibilities very seriously and are extremely conscious of how our operations affect the environment.” “This solar panel project is a significant step forward in our quest to lower our impact and will save an estimated 220.8 tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere each year.” Bandag General Manager Retread Business Greg Nielsen said installing the new solar power systems was another step towards making the Bandag business carbon neutral. “The 357 peak solar panels will generate approximately 136.3 megawatt hours per annum. Alongside that, the Quality Tyre Sales site has had a further 400 panels installed, meaning it will become almost self sufficient in daylight hours.” 7

elbourne’s city centre Maserati dealership – a state-of-the-art facility that opened late last year - has kitted out its service centre equally cutting edge technology, choosing a range of CORGHI products for its lift and tyre equipment. “To say we have invested heavily in fitting out our five service bays and dedicated tyre and wheel area is no understatement,” said after sales manager, Matthew Burcher. “We have four CORGHI submerged scissor lifts, a two post hoist, all from the new range, as well as a CORGHIEM9550 new era Balancer, EXACT 7000 Wheel Aligner and one of the first of the new generation MASTER Jolly Tyre Changer. “From the showroom to the service centre, this place is just cutting edge. We have left nothing to chance here, our customers expect the best and from the minute they are greeted by our concierge, they know that they are about to experience something special.” “As the automotive industry continues to increase wheel size, reduce tyre profile and use more and more expensive rims some tyre changers are struggling to keep up” said Andrew Cornwell, General Manager, Corghi Australia. “They do not have the capacity for the larger wheels or the engineering design to minimise the risk of potential damage to expensive rims, which of course is critical when working in high value, performance cars like Maserati on a daily basis. “With a 26” capacity the new MASTER Jolly is capable of changing most tyre and wheel assemblies with ease” said Mr Cornwell. Hankook wins iF Design Awards H ankook Tire’s all-season UltraHigh Performance (UHP) tyres – Ventus S1 noble2 and Ventus V2 Concept2 – and its all-season Truck & Bus Radial (TBR) tyre, Smart Flex AH31 have been honoured with the iF Design Award 2015 in the product discipline. The Ventus S1 noble2 and Ventus V2 Concept2 were highly acclaimed for their geometric tread pattern designs. Designed for premium sedans, the company says the Ventus S1 noble2 provides exceptional handling performance and driving comfort thanks to its sophisticated asymmetrical tread pattern. Ventus V2 Concept2
should appeal to sports car drivers with optimal driving performance based on dynamic and technical tread designs. Smart Flex AH31, an all-season TBR tyre for variable road conditions, was also recognised for its technology and design, newly adopted to provide even wear and high mileage performance with very low rolling resistance. For tyres, unlike other industrial designs focusing on aesthetic features, the product design carries extra significance as a factor that directly contributes to its driving performance as well as safety-related aspects. For example, core tyre safety performance such as water channelling
and aquaplaning resistance are predominantly determined by tread pattern designs and structure. Established in 1953, the iF Design Award has been one of the most reputable international design awards. Held annually, the iF Design Award assesses entries based on various evaluation criteria including design quality, functionality, safety, visualization of intended use and intuitiveness and environmental impact. Last year, Hankook Tire received recognition from all of the world’s top-4 design awards – iF Design Award, Red Dot Design Award, IDEA, and Good Design Award.

Improved control and precision with Potenza Adrenalin RE003
B
ridgestone’s third-generation Potenza Adrenalin – the RE003 – has set the bar even higher for the street sport tyre market, delivering improved precision and maximum control to sport drivers. Since the release of the first Potenza Adrenalin tyre, RE001 in 2007 and its successor the RE002 in 2011, Bridgestone’s flagship range of performance tyres has become known for sharp, responsive handling. The RE003 looks set to build on the strong reputation of its predecessors, boasting improvements across the board, particularly in dry conditions.
CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY The new Potenza Adrenalin RE003 features Bridgestone’s leading technology including: • Triple and half groove: The combination of three main grooves and a sporty half groove optimises overall rigidity and quickens initial response the instant the steering wheel is turned. • Wide centre rib: Provides a rigid centre rib for precise handling and cornering performance. • Curved groove wall reinforcement: Using a curved groove wall results in strengthened lateral rigidity to offer precise cornering performance. • Connection block: Shortened lug groove increases the rigidity of the shoulder block taking handling 10
stability to a new level for powerful traction in dry conditions. • Pulse groove: The main groove uses wave like design technology that has been proven in the development of motorsport tyres for wet conditions. This innovation has been adopted for better drainage and anti-hydroplaning performance. • Deflectors: Raised protrusions formed on the floor of the pulse groove improve drainage and help prevent hydroplaning. • Silica based compound: The silica compound rubber improves wet-handling performance while maintaining exceptional dry-handling.
PURE PERFORMANCE General Manager Technical Field Service for Bridgestone Australia Ltd, Claudio Sodano said the Potenza Adrenalin RE003 delivered “significant improvements” over its predecessor. “Compared to the second-generation Adrenalin, which was already a leader in its class, the RE003 provides drivers with an even more outstanding driving experience,” Mr Sodano said. “It delivers in terms of noise, improved ride comfort and rolling resistance while offering a high level of balance between wet and dry performance. “Where the RE003 really excels is in its overall dry performance, offering quick response and precise handling, as well as traction and
stability for maximum control.” The RE003 matches or surpasses the RE002 on all fronts, particularly in the realms of straight stability, centre feel, cornering and grip in dry conditions. The RE003 also offers more consistency in road contact pressure than the RE002 which improves traction. This improved traction ensures the tyre’s exceptional cornering performance, enhanced wet braking capabilities and reduced irregular wear.
OUTSTANDING OPTION FOR ALL As an added bonus, the RE003 comes in 43 sizes to suit so many vehicles that almost every motorist will be able to have a version of Bridgestone’s racewinning Potenza pedigree on their car. These vehicles include the Holden Commodore, Ford Falcon, Subaru WRX, Volkswagen Golf GTI, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Toyota 86. “Since 2007 we’ve continued to develop the Adrenalin range and with each new release we exceed expectations when it comes to precision and control,” Mr Sodano said. “The Potenza Adrenalin RE003 is an outstanding tyre option for sports car drivers and enthusiasts.” The Bridgestone Potenza Adrenalin RE003 will be available throughout Bridgestone’s retail network and Bridgestone stockists from April 1, 2015.

Yokohama Rubber Russia Plant Begins Production
Y
okohama’s Russian passenger car tyre production and sales company, LLC Yokohama R.P.Z., has begun production of originalequipment (OE) tyres for passenger cars. In November, the subsidiary began producing Geolander G91 tyres for Nissan X-Trail SUVs made at Nissan Motor Corporation’s local facility. In December 2014, it began making BluEarth E75 tyres for Nissan Teana sedans made at the Nissan Manufacturing Russia plant. Production of the two tyre types was launched in response to a direct request from Nissan Russia, which is curtailing its use of tyres produced in other countries. Previously, LLC Yokohama R.P.Z. had dedicated itself to the production of replacement tyres, so the addition of OE tyres to the subsidiary’s product line should, the
company says, help raise awareness of the Yokohama brand in Russia. One of the key measures being implemented to achieve the goals of Yokohama Rubber’s medium-term management plan (Grand Design 100) is the expansion of OE tyre production at overseas plants.
Russia has become one of Yokohama Rubber’s biggest markets. Yokohama Rubber has continuously expanded the Russia plant’s capacity, which now stands at 1.6 million tyres a year, a 2.3-fold increase from the plant’s capacity upon the start of operations in 2012. 13

Pirelli OE for Ducati performance bikes
Craig Lowndes appointed Tyrepower National Ambassador
C
T
he Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP will be fitted to the new Ducati 1299 Panigale, 1299 Panigale S and Panigale R as original equipment in 120/70 ZR17 (front) and 200/55 ZR17 (rear). The company says the Diablo Supercorsa SP draws from Pirelli’s racing experience and heritage as sole supplier of the World Superbike Championship since 2004 - continuing the philosophy of transferring sport technology to high performance street legal products and allowing the user to have one ultra-high performance product that can be used on the street or the track. Pirelli says the rear 200/55 size of the Diablo Supercorsa SP has a bi-compound solution to permit both increased mileage and more grip while leaning. EPT (Enhanced Patch Technology) has also made it possible to use 23 per cent more soft compound in the shoulder area (compared to the previous Diablo Supercorsa SP version). This accounts, says Pirelli, for the 33 per cent of new pattern extension on each side, guaranteeing better grip in mid to full lean. New polymers used for the SP 14
compound help achieve an earlier warmup and improved grip in all conditions. The performance of the compounds is further enhanced by a single element tread pattern which revolves six times on the tyre surface. The result is that the “naked” area of the slick shoulders is 24 per cent wider compared to the previous Diablo Supercorsa, increasing contact area and grip. The long longitudinal grooves, expanding from the central area to the shoulder, improve wear regularity. The company says the solutions adopted for the compound guarantee a significant increase in grip and traction, allowing the motorcycle to maintain a higher speed whilst leaning. The Diablo Supercorsa SP rear tyre has a carcass made from a high module fibre, patented by Pirelli and developed in WSBK, with a considerably lower deformation ratio than the fibre normally used in street tyres. The result is a carcass which is more rigid, both at the centre and in the shoulder area providing greater resistance to the stress of aggressive cornering or when accelerating early out of a turn with the bike still in a leaning position.
raig Lowndes has been announced as the National Ambassador for Tyrepower, extending a relationship which began with the tyre retailing giant’s Queensland operations five years ago. Lowndes’ appointment reflects Tyrepower’s increasing involvement in V8 Supercar racing, which includes naming rights sponsorship of the Tyrepower Tasmania SuperSprint event in March and the Tyrepower Cutting corner at Bathurst’s famed Mt Panorama track. Tyrepower will also be a regular supporter of Network 10’s V8 Supercar television coverage this year, with Lowndes featuring heavily in the advertisements. “Craig Lowndes is an outstanding individual as well as being the most successful racing driver in Australian history, and we are all delighted to welcome him to the Tyrepower family nationally,” said Tyrepower CEO David Wilson. “Clearly Craig has great credibility in talking about tyres, given what he does for a living, and his popularity and recognition mean that his involvement will assist Tyrepower in promoting its message.” Lowndes was delighted to extend his Tyrepower relationship nationally. “I’ve worked with the Tyrepower crew in Queensland for more than five years now and it’s been a great relationship, so being able to get involved nationally is a fantastic opportunity,” he said. “Tyrepower’s stores are all operator-owned, so there’s a real sense of involvement and personalised service with customers, which I like, so spreading the word is no chore!” Established in 1977, Tyrepower now has over 250 independent stores within its national network, making it Australia’s biggest independent tyre retail chain.

The Japanese manufacturer has produced a front-engine, front wheel drive car that is powered by a V6 3-litre twin turbo petrol engine and a kinetic energy recovery system. “This is innovation that excites,” said Shoichi Miyatani, President of NISMO. “Sustainability is at the top of our agenda and the technical regulations for Le Mans give us the freedom to pursue new ideas in this area. Our record at Le Mans is third place overall so we have unfinished business there. We want to win and we have the knowledge to do that – for our customers, our employees and our fans. The competition is exceptionally strong and we are excited by the challenge.” “We are very proud to have been chosen by Nissan to develop tyres for its LM P1 program,” said Pascal Couasnon, Michelin Motorsport Director. The Nissan GT-R LM NISMO is a fantastic car. It will serve as a valuable laboratory for the future but will also make high demands on our tyres from the word go. The development of tyres for this car will be a challenge and we at Michelin didn’t hesitate to rise to it.” 15

THE ATD INTERVIEW Michael Rudd is the Managing Director and CEO of Toyo Tyre & Rubber Australia Limited. Prior to taking the top job at Toyo, Mr Rudd was the partner of a chartered accountancy firm that serviced businesses in Australia and overseas. He is a graduate member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. ATD talked to Mr Rudd about Toyo, the tyre industry and the brand’s commitment to its customers. ATD: Toyo Tires is celebrating its 70th birthday this year. What can you attribute the company’s growth and success to, and what sets Toyo apart from its competitors? MR: 70 years ago Toyo Tires was founded when Rikimatsu
Tomihisa established Toyo Tire & Rubber Co Ltd in Japan. This year also marks 40 years since Toyo products began to be distributed in Australia in 1975. So, 2015 is a significant milestone for the local business as well. The reason for our growth and success? Foremost, as a challenger brand I think it comes from our commitment to our customers, both end users and dealers. We run a relatively lean retail model, and we don’t compete with our dealers. We work with them to grow and to increase their competitiveness. We wouldn’t be anywhere without their support, and underlying every action a Toyo employee might take during their day is the question ‘how will this bring about positive change for the customer?’ Every Toyo employee is empowered to 16
seek out opportunities for positive change and improvement in every aspect of the business. This is part of Toyo’s practice of the Japanese business philosophy of Kaizen, or ‘continuous improvement’. Kaizen is manifested with a focus on customers across our manufacturing, administration, product development, customer service, logistics and delivery arms. This approach makes innovation systematic. Creating small, incremental improvements creates long-lasting positive change. This builds towards that mindset of going beyond, presenting Toyo as a unique company with a genuine global presence. Toyo’s priorities are to develop and manufacture the best quality product and exceed the expectations of the user, as well as maximising commercial benefits for Tyrepower and other carefully selected tyre dealers we deal with. Our Toyo Quality Assurance Program (QAP) ensures our tyres are trialled, tested and proven on Australian roads before they are mass distributed, so our users are assured that their tyres are absolutely up to the job.
ABOUT MICHAEL RUDD MICHAEL RUDD was appointed to the role of Managing Director and CEO of Toyo Tyre and Rubber Australia on the 1st of January, 2012. A graduate member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Mr Rudd was inducted into the Toyo business in 2007 as an executive director, and is the first Australian appointed managing director in the company’s history. Initially interacting with the business as a partner of Toyo’s then external chartered accountancy firm, Mr Rudd’s strong finance and administration background were a perfect fit for Toyo’s intricate manufacturing and wholesaling business in Australia. The appointment of Mr Rudd is an indicator of Toyo’s desire to become a truly global organisation. Both distributing and manufacturing in Australia, Toyo Tyre and Rubber Australia employs over 200 people, occupying roles in its south-west manufacturing facility in Minto NSW, seven regional offices and distribution centres throughout Australia
Managing Director and CEO of Toyo Tyre and Rubber Australia, Michael Rudd
“The automotive industry has also become relentless in separating the average from the exceptional. Service, quality and performance are not aspirational characteristics of today, they are mandates” ATD: The vehicles people drive are changing. Hybrids and all-electric cars are already here and fully autonomous vehicles are on their way. As an OEM supplier, how important is it for Toyo to collaborate with vehicle manufacturers to ensure their tyres complement and enhance the abilities of these new vehicles? MR: The demands on modern tyre design
are greater than they have ever been. Today, motorists are seeking tyres that are longerlasting, safer and more comfortable. Car manufacturers are demanding tyres that perform while meeting their design expectations of greener, more fuel-efficient vehicles. A good example of this collaboration is the Mazda 3 being equipped with the NanoEnergy R38A tyre – Toyo’s latest innovation in green tyre technology. At a local level, Toyo has been supplying and developing OEM anti-vibration auto parts for popular high volume models for Toyota Motor Corporation Australia (TMCA) since 1986. The principles of collaboration in the design of these OE
parts are the same as the R&D process in OEM tyres, which starts with fully understanding the needs of the customer. Vehicle engineers provide Toyo with a set of characteristics, and we work within our broad portfolio of constructions, patterns and compounds to deliver a product that meets or surpasses expectations. As well as Mazda 3, Toyo has been spec’d as OE for premium trim levels on the soon-to-be-released Mazda CX-3 and 2015 Mitsubishi Triton.
ATD: Bearing in mind these developments in the automotive industry, where do you see the tyre manufacturing industry focusing in the next decade and how do you see the market in Australia developing? MR: The Australian consumer is more empowered than
ever. There is more access to information generated not only via media, but by their peers. Consumers are more vocal and have greater influence over the market than ever before. The automotive industry has also become relentless in separating the average from the exceptional. Service, quality and performance are not aspirational characteristics of today, they are mandates. Digital touch-points for customers and dealers are essential and dropping the ball is not a luxury that the tyre industry can afford. In conjunction with automotive and tyre software providers COSTAR, Toyo is about to launch an online ordering portal which will improve order transparency, accessibility and stock visibility for dealers, as well as speeding the process up. In some key markets, deliveries have been increased to twice daily. These are efficiency measures aimed at giving our dealers more time to concentrate on satisfying their customers, and producing a mutually beneficial customer experience. In a wider sense, the SUV market is growing rapidly. We are now seeing an emerging category of sub-compact SUVs, with every OEM seeming to have a vehicle on the market or on the way. Australia also has an aging population, and many of them are taking to 4x4 touring like ducks to water. Aussies are touring, towing and exploring more than ever before. As a result, the replacement tyre market for SUVs and CUVs is growing and getting very competitive. It is a global priority for Toyo to meet the needs of our customers in this market. continued page 18 17
Something similar to the European Tyre Rating scheme – where labelling must specify a tyre’s fuel consumption, wet grip and noise classification – would be a great step forward for Australia and is something we hope to see. The geographic footprint of car manufacturer’s operations is expanding too, and subsequently, so should the operations of tyre manufacturers to meet OEM demand. Asia and the Oceanic are key areas of growth for Toyo, and it is of critical importance that the manufacturing tolerances aren’t compromised. Toyo’s latest manufacturing plant in Malaysia, a strategic gateway to the Thai auto market and its plant in Zhangjiagang City in China, are equipped with Toyo’s ATOM proprietary manufacturing processes, assuring Toyo’s technology and quality is maintained regardless of the country of origin.
ATD: Are there tyres within the Toyo product range that are specific to Australia, or that have proved more popular here than elsewhere? MR: Australia has some of the most wildly different driving
surfaces in the world. Conditions here can and do change rapidly. On the east coast of Australia you can surf and ski in the same day; on the Top End, you can switch between monsoonal rain and oppressive dry heat in minutes. These are all facets of the tyre business in Australia that need to be accounted for in tyre design and construction. Toyo users must feel safe and assured at all times. The TEO Plus was also a huge hit with Australian drivers. The tyre has now been superseded by the NanoEnergy 3, which is also rapidly developing a local following. The Open Country A/T II – our newest all-terrain which is just as versed on a wet freeway as it is in the scrub – has also proven popular in Australia. Toyo’s severe service SUV tyre, the M55, has been in the range for decades. With very little change it has
“Our goal is not to build the perfect business, but a better business that continues to improve while keeping the customer constantly in mind”
remained popular. The M55 is particularly popular in mining applications, with its dynamic all-terrain tread and ‘tough-as’ construction giving the tyre a presence in motorsport, including the 2014 Australasian Safari!
ATD: Like many tyre manufacturers, Toyo is heavily involved in motorsport. How does the company’s development of racing tyres translate to the development of road tyres? MR: Motorsport improves the breed. What we
learn on the track, we incorporate in our road products. It provides a platform for users and dealers to see the full scope of our tyres’ performance. We seek out emerging and entertaining motorsports, where tyres are placed under extreme demand. Drifting, off-road racing, circuit racing, Stadium Super Trucks and everything in between are a crucible for studying and developing the performance of our tyres. There is a definite synergy between Toyo’s motorsport activity and street tyres. The rigours and trials of motorsport offer an ideal testing bed for understanding our products’ performance envelope. Toyo aims to strike the best possible balance between racing performance and resilience and the diverse needs of the everyday driver. Tyre design cuts both ways, we gain insights from our road tyres that apply to our motorsport designs. For example, the casing construction technology used in the brand new Proxes R888R, includes a rayon rather than polyester carcass for increased sidewall stiffness, this is a feature added due to lessons learned with our street UHP tyre; the Proxes T1 Sport and the Audi OE version of that, the Proxes T1AO. Continuing the road to motorsport theme, Toyo’s Open Country M/T-R – a racing version of Toyo’s off-the-shelf mud terrain tyre – uses a compound developed for a specific truck tyre. This is a tyre on which a swathe of international offroad racers has inflicted every torture you could imagine. Whether driving on the sands of Dakar, over the rutted tracks of Finke or gunning down the Baja peninsula, our drivers tell us that even the most challenging of conditions have been unable to break the race-spec mud tyre.
ATD: What other avenues in R&D does Toyo explore, not only in the development of tyres but in areas such as the manufacturing process and development of materials? MR: Toyo’s manufacturing facilities

worldwide benefit from the same Advanced Tyre Operation Module (ATOM) production system Toyo uses in Japan. Proprietary to Toyo, ATOM uses computer-controlled automation to reduce the overall number of manufacturing processes, minimising waste and reducing variations in parts prior to moulding to ensure consistency in the finished tyres. It’s an automated system that is the basis of all our newer factories, increasing Toyo’s production capacity in facilities that occupy a smaller footprint. ATOM also allows for the cost-effective production of a smaller numbers of tyres. For customers, this improved uniformity means a consistent, high quality product. For dealers it means less

balancing time, and less balancing weights, which helps to cut costs and increase customer retention rates. Toyo is also one of the pioneers of computer simulation technology for the development of new products. T-MODE is the latest version of the software that allows engineers to measure and simulate vehicle movements, driving characteristics and extreme conditions to assess different tyre designs in each situation. The data allows for dramatic improvement in product design and performance. This is technology you can see in our product range, for example the off-road credibility and smooth, quiet on-road performance of the Open Country M/T. Another proprietary technology, Nano Balance, sees Toyo engineers taking compound development to a molecular level. By using Nano Balance technology Toyo has pursued seemingly opposing goals for the NanoEnergy range: low noise and rolling resistance, better comfort and tyre life, while at the same time achieving high levels of grip and stability in all conditions
ATD: Toyo has an award-winning portfolio of tyres – from passenger car tyres to racing tyres. Are there concept tyres and innovations on the horizon that we might see on our roads? MR: Toyo is in a constant state of research and development.
We have a lot of products in the early development phase and we are constantly evaluating our customers’ needs. The much-anticipated Proxes R888R will be hitting streets and race tracks in Australia this year, replacing the popular Proxes R888 semi-slick. Low rolling resistance truck tyres are also an area of innovation, and Toyo is plying the lessons learned with NanoEnergy and our proprietary technologies to bring fuel efficiency to the heavy vehicle sector. Toyo’s global business profile also includes the NITTO and Silverstone brands which have distinct offerings and loyal users around the world. Being the brand stewards for both, Toyo will continue to explore market opportunities in Australia for these products, which we believe are significant.
ATD: Being ‘eco-friendly’ is important not only for the environment but can also be a consideration the consumer makes when buying products. What initiatives does Toyo take to be eco-friendly in its manufacturing processes and when considering the impact of ‘end-of-life’ tyres?
On August 1, 2015 Toyo Tire & Rubber Ltd. celebrates the 70th anniversary of the company’s founding in 1945. Today, Toyo Tires conducts business in over 100 countries and regions. The company develops and manufactures a wide range of products rooted in its proprietary technology, including automobile tyres as its core product as well as anti-vibration rubber for automobiles, urethane products and industrial-use rubber products. Toyo Tyres Australia Ltd. is also celebrating an anniversary. 2015 marks 40 years since the first Toyo passenger car and truck tyres were imported from Japan and distributed in the Australian market. Rapidly expanding to all states by 1981, the Toyo brand quickly became and has remained synonymous with performance, comfort and reliability. Michael Rudd, Toyo Tyres Australia Ltd. CEO and Managing Director said that the businesses staying power stems from a commitment to constantly improving relationships, products and services for dealers and drivers. “40 years is a milestone we are very proud to have reached.” said Mr Rudd. “We are perpetually reviewing our systems, asking every member of our team to be involved in the process of innovation and improvement.” “Our customers are at the forefront of everything we do. I think that is where our difference lies, and is why I confidently look forward to celebrating many more anniversaries with this business.” Toyo President Takuji Yamamoto also expressed his gratitude to all of those who have contributed to the company’s ongoing global success. “We are deeply grateful to the countless customers and affiliates whose support has made it possible for our company to sustain and grow our business for 70 years,” Mr Yamamoto said. To celebrate the occasion, Toyo Tires has designed a 70th anniversary logo. The seven represents an arrow stretching toward rapid future growth while the zero symbolises a dedication to connected teamwork. In conjunction with its 70th anniversary, Toyo Tires is building its new headquarters in Itami City, Hyogo Prefecture, and will relocate to the new premises in August 2015. In order to reinforce the global growth of its strategic businesses and create more agile management through speedier decision-making, Toyo Tires will centralise management functions and boost its internal mobility and sense of unity in its quest for sustained, innovative growth.
MR: We are proud to be a member of the Tyre Stewardship Scheme (TSA), the industry’s national product stewardship scheme for end-of-life tyres. Advanced fuel-efficient tyre technology already makes a substantial contribution; but we also have a responsibility to ensure we find the best possible disposal solution for these tyres once they reach the end of their useful life. Used tyres accumulate by the millions every year. Without the industry taking action, end-of-life tyres will present a serious environmental issue. The attention of governments and the public is increasingly being drawn to this issue and it is incumbent on the tyre industry to do what it can to mitigate. continued page 20 19
The sustainable disposal of used tyres can be achieved without imposing an onerous cost burden on the trade or consumers, and TSA has built serious momentum over the last year. On the manufacturing side, Toyo Tyre and Rubber Australia’s manufacturing facilities are accredited by ISO14001, the international standard for the development of effective environmental management systems. Globally, initiatives are in place to reduce water consumption, prevent air pollution and reduce volatile organic chemical emissions. Thus far, reductions in environmental impacts have been seen year on year. The business strives towards a target of zero emissions, attempting to reduce final landfill waste to less than one per cent of total waste generated.
MR: Toyo has a long history as an OEM of anti-vibration parts to the Australian and export automotive industries. And today, we are seen as the leader in rubber manufacturing in Australia. Our commitment to the future of Australia’s rubber industry continues with recent investments in a world-class manufacturing facility at our Minto NSW operations. Toyo’s Rubber Products division develops and manufactures rubber solutions for both domestic and international markets. Our customers come from industries as diverse as mining, automotive, engineering, construction and tyre reconditioning. The automotive products we produce include suspension bushes, body cushions, engine mounts, torque rods, radiator and exhaust support brackets, and front and rear support brackets. ATD: What is your goal for Toyo Tires here in Australia? What does the future hold and what areas do you see the company focusing on as you grow in the marketplace? MR: Normalising green motoring
ATD: Toyo is involved in the community through support of charities such as Blue September. In what way is the company involved with the charity and how important is that involvement? MR: Australia has the highest rate of

Mercedes-Benz F 015 is ‘Luxury In Motion’
Mercedes F 015
M
ercedes Benz unveiled its vision of the future of autonomous driving at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January with the extraordinarylooking F 015 Luxury in Motion. A research vehicle designed from the outset as an autonomous car, the F 015 creates, says Mercedes, new possibilities in vehicle design, packaging and connectivity, becoming a ‘mobile living space’. Built using carbon fibre reinforced plastic, aluminium and steel, the F 015 weighs 40 per cent less than current cars of a similar size even though it is stuffed to the gills with all manner of technologically-advanced goodies. These goodies include the innovative interior concept and its variable seating system, with four rotating lounge chairs that allow a face-toface seat configuration. In order to make getting in and out of the car easier, the electrically powered seats also swing outwards by 30 degrees as soon as the doors are opened. For manual driving, the seats swing forward and the steering wheel extends automatically from the dashboard. One key aspect of the research
vehicle is the continuous exchange of information between vehicle, passengers and the outside world. This is facilitated by six display screens integrated into the instrument panel and the rear and side panels, which turn the interior of the F 015 into a digital arena. Passengers can interact with the connected vehicle through gestures, eye-tracking or by touching the high-resolution screens. Sensors recognise the passengers’ hands and offer them user interfaces within convenient reach that present appropriate operating options for each particular situation.
Underneath all this technology is a little bit more - a fuel cell system that draws inspiration from the F-Cell PlugIn Hybrid system first see in the F125 Research vehicle from 2011 that delivers power through two electric motors at the back wheels generating 200 kW. The maximum torque of 200 Nm per motor is available the instant the vehicle starts off, resulting in figures of 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds and goes to reach a governed top speed of 200 km/h. Its consumption equates to just 0.6 kgs of hydrogen per 100 kilometres – the equivalent of 2 litres of diesel. 21

ALL-NEW FORD GT CARBON FIBRE SUPERCAR
FORD UNVEILED THE all-new GT, an ultra-high-performance supercar that serves as a technology showcase for top EcoBoost performance, aerodynamics and lightweight carbon fibre construction. Beginning production next year, the GT hits the road in select global markets to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ford GT race cars placing 1-2-3 at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. Ford says the all-new supercar represents the company’s commitment to innovation through performance. And it certainly should perform. Designed with an eye on aerodynamic efficiency and using advanced, lightweight composites that will, Ford says, help serve the company’s entire product lineup moving forward, the GT is powered by a next-generation, 600-plus-horsepower twinturbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine that will give it one of the best power-to-weight ratios of any production car. ACURA UNVEILS THE NEW NSX
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS after the debut of the NSX supercar, Acura (see Honda) revealed the production version of its successor at the Detroit show. The original NSX, launched in 1990, came as something of a shock to rest of the world’s supercar manufacturers, and the new NSX may well cause another stir when it hits showrooms later this year. The NSX is powered by a twin-turbocharged 75-degree DOHC V6 engine with a three-electric motor Sport Hybrid system - two at the front and one at the back wheels. No word as yet on the performance figures but the NSX, with its ultra-rigid and lightweight multi-material body, is bound to be a pretty swift customer. Like the Ford GT, the NSX is a real showstopper.
GM AUSTRALIA DESIGNERS SCOOP TOP AWARD IN DETROIT
GM AUSTRALIA’S DESIGN team made their mark at the NAIAS Show when they took out the “Best Concept Vehicle 2015” and “Best Innovative Use of Colour, Graphics and Materials” awards for the stunning Buick Avenir. The Avenir, designed in collaboration with GM North America and built at GM Australia’s advanced studio, was joined on the ‘podium’ by the Chevrolet Bolt which placed as one of two runners up in the “Best Concept Vehicle 2015” category. Dayco releases world first timing belt in oil (bio) system D ayco has introduced the Dayco Belt In Oil (BIO) System to the Australian aftermarket. The company says the world first BIO system has provided automotive vehicle manufacturers such as Audi, Volkswagen and Ford with an engine belt system that weighs less, is less susceptible to stretching, reduces friction and is quieter than traditional chain drive components which has translated to better engine performance, lower emissions and improved fuel economy - three of the core design factors demanded by the majority of motorists today. Dayco says it achieved this world first innovation without compromising engine belt strength and reliability, with vigorous bench and vehicle fleet testing preceding the BIO System’s successful introduction as Original Equipment componentry. The Dayco BIO System includes state of the art materials such as Dayco’s
patented belt and tensioner set in an optimum belt and pulley profile that ensures extremely smooth running and low noise. The Dayco BIO System features a reduced friction co-efficient with a consequent reduction of energy loss, both integral factors for achieving lower fuel consumption without compromising engine power. Ricciardo hunting Formula One glory D aniel Ricciardo will continue on what seems an almost inevitable march to superstardom and World Championship glory this month as the 2015 Formula One season kicks off with the Australian GP at Albert Park. Though this country has had a number of outstanding drivers in the world’s premiere motor racing competition, it is Ricciardo who looks the most likely to become Australia’s first world champion since Alan Jones in 1980 and only the third since three-time champion Sir Jack Brabham. It has, as the saying goes, been a long time between drinks. The pre-season hype got underway in earnest at the beginning of February as the teams revealed their new cars and testing got underway at the Jerez circuit in Spain. Unlike the other teams, Red Bull played their cards close to their chest with the new RB11 rolling out onto the track boasting an unusual ‘dazzle’ livery similar to those used to camouflage prototype road cars. Ricciardo seemed pleased with the performance of the car on the first day of testing. “I got a few laps under my belt,” he said. “So the first impressions are good. A good first day, there are
28
some positive signs there. “The livery’s cool. It’s a testing specification for us but I think it looks really good. Maybe I need a matching helmet.” Ricciardo’s stunning full debut season in 2014 - which saw him win three Grand Prix and be the only winner of a GP outside of the allconquering Mercedes team of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg – has him marked as the driver to watch in 2015. Speaking shortly after the close of the 2014 season, Ricciardo’s drive to win was clear: “I won’t settle for anything else now. Once you make one step you want to keep making more. I’m sure Mercedes are going to very quick again next year, but the gap’s there for us to close. Hopefully we can do that.” If the RB11 is reliable and quick and can get Ricciardo close to his rivals, then come the end of November 2015, the thirst for a new Australian motorsport hero may well be quenched.

ntonio Felix Da Costa clinched victory in an action-packed Buenos Aires ePrix on January 10, ahead of e.dams-Renault’s Nicolas Prost and China Racing’s Nelson Piquet Jr. The Amlin Aguri driver kept clear of trouble and slowly made his way into the lead as his rivals fell by the wayside. Both polesitter Sebastien Buemi and championship leader Lucas di Grassi retired with suspension failures at the fast Turn 8 and 9 chicane. Venturi’s Nick Heidfeld looked favourite to win in the closing stages but a drive-through penalty for speeding
in the pitlane scuppered his chances. Da Costa, who missed the opening round in Beijing, progressed up the field from eighth on the grid to collect the full 25 points. “I was very happy and confident about our car this weekend,” said Da Costa. “I knew we could get a podium finish but I wasn’t sure where on the podium so it’s great that we finished at the top. It’s a great feeling to have and we will continue to keep pushing hard to move up the team standings. I am looking forward to the next race.” Piquet picked up his second consecutive podium despite being

Piquet wasn’t the only driver to be effected by the confusion as a number of drivers had to pass the safety car to unlap themselves. Virgin Racing’s Sam Bird was part of the lead group but he picked up a drive-through penalty for ignoring the pit exit lights. Da Costa’s team-mate Salvador Duran clinched four points ahead of Heidfeld. Dragon Racing’s Oriol Servia rounded out the top-10 positions. The race attracted a sell-out crowd of around 20,000. Ogier resumes winning ways S ébastien Ogier, the reigning WRC world champion has continued his winning ways into the new season with victories in the championshipopening Monte Carlo Rally before also scoring a win in the Rally of Sweden. The Frenchman won in Monte Carlo by nearly a minute but his victory in Sweden was a much tighter affair with the win coming on the last stage of the event and in the closest three-way battle in the history of the World Rally Championship. Just 4.6 seconds separated the top three teams at the start of the final stage showdown with Ogier, driving the VW Polo R WRC, trailing his VW teammate Andreas Mikkelsen, with Hyundai i20 driver Thierry Neuville in third. The decisive scene came just a few hundred metres from the finish when Mikkelsen spun his VW, losing vital time and eventually placing third behind Ogier and Neuville. The result was WRC victory number 26 for Ogier and, after winning at Monte Carlo, sees him comfortably atop the championship standings going into the next round in Mexico. For Volkswagen, the victory cements their status as the leading rally team. After a one-two-three finish for the team in Monte Carlo, the defending

constructors champion are looking tough to beat. “I am incredibly proud of this win,” said Ogier. “It is certainly one of my best . . . It was certainly one of the most thrilling and exciting ends to a rally – not just
for the fans, but also of my career. I obviously feel sorry for Andreas, who came so close to his first win and was involved in an extremely intense battle with us. However, I am sure that this is not the last time we will be duelling for victory. He and Thierry Neuville produced impressive performances.” The next WRC event is the Rally of Mexico at the beginning of March.
Yaris WRC made its public debut, complete with new launch livery. The car features a 1.6-litre turbo-charged, direct-injection engine that produces over 300hp, while advanced simulation, testing and production techniques have shaped the Yaris chassis. With an official WRC program
now confirmed, development will be expanded while the dedicated team of specialists assigned to engineer and operate the car will be increased. When the car makes its competitive debut in 2017, it will mark more than 17 years since the company’s last world championship rally, in 1999. Team president Yoshiaki Kinoshita said it was a great honour to bring the Toyota name back to the WRC alongside continued participation in the World Endurance Championship. “To run two works motorsport programs simultaneously is of course a challenge but we believe we have the expertise and determination to succeed,” said Mr Kinoshita.

oyota will return to the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) in 2017 with a car developed and built by the Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) technical centre in Cologne, Germany. Over the next two years TMG will continue its test program with the Yaris WRC car to prepare for a full return to the series in which Toyota won four drivers’ and three manufacturers’ world championships in the 1990s. According to news reports from Canada, scientists have discovered that the humble lettuce plant might be able to be used in the production of rubber. A team from the University of Calgary discovered that the elongated stem of a lettuce pant can produce a milky latex that contains a biopolymer which can be used to synthesise natural rubber. Though the scientists made their breakthrough using lettuce - which produces high quality natural rubber - as a model system, not enough of the product can be produced from it and commercial production will require using a different plant. The hope is that, within 10 years, the team will find the most optimal plant enzymes to create natural rubber from new plant sources.

Continental says that, for the first time, it is offering the new ContiRe CityService, a hot retreaded tyre exclusively developed for vehicles in the waste collection and recycling sector. The company says the ContiRe CityService HA3 is extremely robust and flexible on all axles to meet the highly demanding conditions of the sector. The hot retreaded tyre, whose compound is especially cut and tear resistant, also makes a positive contribution to the environmental footprint of waste management companies. Tyres for vehicles used in waste disposal face tough challenges. Narrow cornering, frequent acceleration and braking, maneuvering in tight spaces, and repeatedly driving up to and mounting curbsides put vehicle tyres under enormous pressure. To meet these special requirements, Continental says the ContiRe CityService HA3 guarantees optimum durability and long service life thanks to an innovative tread structure and a specially adapted rubber compound. Moreover, the tread profile is non-directional so the ContiRe CityService HA3 can be used flexibly on all axles. The hot retreaded tyre is produced in the ContiLifeCycle plant in Hanover.
