elcome to the June/July edition of Australian Tyre Dealer. Some major news in this edition comes in the form of a joint venture between Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI) and Sumitomo Corporation that has created a new Australian tyres sales company, Sumitomo Rubber Australia Pty. Ltd. (SRAU). Launched at an industry event in late April, the joint venture has made acquisitions across wholesale and retail businesses, totalling over $20 million AUD in capital investment. Working from a new Sydney base, SRAU will manage and operate the import, stock and sale of the Falken and Sumitomo tyre brands in Australia. “Australia is one of the most important markets for Sumitomo rubber to make our global expansion,” said SRAU Managing Director Kenichi Furuhama at the launch. “We will strive to improve customer satisfaction by introducing new products with a firm grasp of local market needs.” With a focus on logistics and the development and launch of new products, SRAU’s aim is to become a major player in the Australian industry. “For customers, for shareholders, for employees, for consumers and for the community, our goal is to establish Sumitomo rubber as the most highly respected tyre company in Australia,” said Mr Huruhama. In OE news, Toyo has announced that its Proxes R30 will be factoryfitted on the SX and ZR models of the best-selling Toyota Corolla, while its Toyo Open Country A28 will be OE fitment on the 2016 Mitsubishi Triton GLS Double Cab automatic and manual and the range-topping Exceed 4x4 Double Cab automatic. Elsewhere, Ferrari’s California T model is now available factory-fitted with Bridgestone’s Potenza S007 tyre with run-flat technology while Nexen has scored original equipment deals with Renault for its Twingo small car, and Daimler for its similarly sized Smart Forfour vehicle. Kumho and Pirelli also scored new OE deals with Dodge and Jaguar respectively.
In other industry news, Aeolus Tyres’ ultra-high performance SteeringACE2 tyre is available in Australia. Recently awarded the TÜV SÜD certificate of quality in Europe, the SteeringACE2 will, the company says, “particularly impress sports car enthusiasts who place value on sporty performance, driving stability and brake power, even in critical situations.” In Motorsport news this edition, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg continue to dominate the Formula One season with the two Mercedes drivers sitting atop the F1 drivers’ standings having won all but one of the season’s races (ATD went to press before the June 21 Austrian GP). It’s difficult to see anyone outside of those two who can challenge for the title. After a terrific debut effort last year, Daniel Ricciardo’s season has been a disappointing one and the Australian currently wallows in 7th place in the title race, more than 100 points behind Hamilton. Better news though for Australia’s former F1 star Mark Webber. A solid team performance saw Webber and his co-drivers Timo Bernhard and Brendon Hartley finish in second spot at Le Mans in the Porsche 919 Hybrid. The race was won by the other Porsche 919 Hybrid team, and the result was the 17th overall Le Mans victory for the German manufacturer. In other news, we take a look at the racing version of the new Ford GT supercar - which will take to the track at the 2016 edition of the Le Mans race; visit the Brisbane Truck Show that took place in May and have international news from Hankook, Linglong, Yokohama and Michelin. I hope you enjoy this edition and feel free to drop me a line if you have some news you would like to share with the industry. I look forward to hearing from you. Cheers

TSA Chairman, Gerry Morvell, announced the appointment of Mr Matt Genever, marking it as an important milestone in TSA’s ongoing task of ensuring sustainable management of end-of-life tyres and working towards maximising commercially viable recycling. “TSA has grown rapidly with the support of tyre companies, major tyre retail chains and the recycling sector. This new appointment will enable the TSA to significantly increase activity, particularly in furthering market development measures designed to increase the value of products derived from the recycling of wastes tyres,” Mr Morvell said. “Matt brings a decade of experience in waste and resource management. In his new role as CEO, all of this experience and knowledge will be invaluable to furthering TSA’s goals and objectives.”

Tyre Stewardship Australia was established by the nation’s leading tyre importers, with the support of Federal and State Governments, to establish an independent auditing regime tracing the management of end-of-life tyres, build industry and community education on sustainable tyre disposal and to help develop additional recycling uses that can further build the economic value of the recovered raw materials. The Scheme is funded by an ACCC authorised consumer levy of 25 cents on new tyres and enjoys the support of key industry members, Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear-Dunlop, Michelin, Pirelli, Toyo, Tyrepower and Yokohama. Australia produces over 48 million end-of-life tyres each year with only 16% currently being sustainably managed or recycled. TSA aims to significantly improve that outcome through effective reporting, market education that creates competitive incentive, and support for recycling research and development.

DUAL FOCUS
Sumitomo Rubber: Australian expansion
L
aunched at an industry event in late April, a joint venture between Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI) and the Sumitomo Corporation has created a new Australian tyre sales company, Sumitomo Rubber Australia Pty. Ltd. (SRAU) Part of a major global expansion, the joint venture has made acquisitions across wholesale and retail businesses, totalling over $20 million AUD in capital investment. SRAU has acquired the Falken tyres wholesale business from tyre distribution company Transport Tyre Sales (TTS), as well as a the Sumitomo tyres wholesale business, and the City Discount franchise network from Summit Tyres Australia Pty. Ltd. From a new Sydney base, SRAU will now manage and operate the import, stock and sale of the Falken and Sumitomo tyre brands in Australia. SRAU is the newest business unit in Sumitomo’ Australia’s 60 year strong local history, encompassing mining, thermal generation, agriculture, distribution, fleet leasing and food businesses. SRAU Managing Director Kenichi Furuhama said that the Australian market offered a great opportunity to capitalise on SRI and Sumitomo Corporation’s global reputations, and leverage TTS and Summit’s local strengths. “Australia is one of the most important 4
markets for Sumitomo rubber to make our global expansion.” said Mr Furuhama. “We will strive to improve customer satisfaction by introducing new products with a firm grasp of local market needs.” “We will focus mainly on the replacement markets for passenger cars, 4x4 and light truck tyre, and we plan to expand our truck and bus

Two focus areas in 2015 are poised to contribute to the businesses goal of leading respect in the Australian tyre industry. The first focus area is logistics. “Falken brand tyres have been delivered from our four warehouses, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne. We have been delivering from these warehouses twice a day to metro areas of these cities,” explained Mr Furuhama. “In addition to these warehouses we will add an Adelaide warehouse in July and will offer twice daily delivery from this new location.” The Sumitomo tyre brand will also be making logistics improvements. “For Sumitomo tyres, warehousing and logistics have been conducted by a third party, with once daily delivery only,” said Mr Furuhama “We are currently arranging existing warehouses to stock our Sumitomo brand tyres. We will increase our delivery service to our customers from once a day to twice a day delivery. We will do this in the third quarter of 2015.” SRAU will also launch two new tyre products in 2015, adapting and improving existing products in the passenger and SUV space to local market needs. The first product is the Falken Ziex ZE914, successor to the Ziex ZE912. A passenger tyre, the ZE914 will launch from September 2015. The ZE914 will be available in 56 sizes, from 15 to 18 inch in 35-65 profiles. The compound has been updated to suit Australian conditions. “The ZE914 is already available in the European market, where we have a very good reputation with the consumer,” said Mr Furuhama. “It is important to notice that we have developed this tyre for the Australian market. We have changed our compound from the EU version to taking into consideration Australian needs.” Under the Sumitomo brand, SRAU are also scheduled to launch the
Sumitomo Encounter H/T. The SUV highway terrain tyre will be available in 17 different sizes to suit 16 to 18 fitments. Not an existing or adapted product, SRAU plans to develop the tyre and introduce it in the fourth quarter of 2015. “With the support of SRI headquarters we will continue to develop new products better adapted to the needs of the Australian market,” said Mr Furuhama. “We will make sure we make every effort to respond to market feedback and fulfill the satisfaction of consumers. This is very important to us, we will work with you together, to communicate future success.”
NEW HQ Since March, SRAU has operated from headquarters in the Western Sydney suburb of Chipping Norton. The opening of the new base of operations has seen 60 employees recruited from the local area.

The company aims to increase the brand awareness in the European market through various sponsorship programs in the ‘MerecedesCup.’ During the tournament, Nexen Tire placed advertisements on back drops, base panels, LED banners and video spot at TV screens. In addition, the company booth was set up in the Sponsor Village to provide more information about Nexen Tire and its products to visitors. Key new sizes added to Dueler M/T 674 range
T
he Bridgestone Dueler M/T 674 is now available in 14 sizes to suit a range of vehicles. Two new additions – sizes 265/70R16 and 245/70R17 – are designed with light truck construction to fit medium and large utilities, large 4x4s and SUVs. National Technical Field Service Manager Jon Tamblyn said Bridgestone was committed to the 4WD market and wanted to make its mud terrain tyre more accessible. “Bridgestone Dueler A/Ts in 265/70R16 and 245/70R17 are extremely popular, but we haven’t had an M/T available in these sizes before,” he said. “The range expansion is great news for people who want to use their vehicles in muddy and severe off-road conditions but haven’t been able to find a tyre to suit – now they can finally tackle some serious mud! “The 265/70R16 suits some 8

• 3D grooves cut easily and efficiently into the mud; • Specially designed 3D shoulder lugs enable the tread to grab the ground and then clean the mud off – meaning the tyres are self-cleaning; • A 3D buttress with a step/ slope combination reduces tread stiffness variation, promoting improved mud traction; and • A 3D upper sidewall supports mud traction in heavy conditions Mr Tamblyn said the new Bridgestone Dueler M/T 674 was revolutionary for its type and had delivered beyond expectations. “The M/T 674 has been created to meet the intense demands of off-road driving, with high load capability and up to a 10 ply rating.” For more information, find your nearest Bridgestone retail outlet by calling 131 229 or visit www.bridgestonetyres.com.au

SteeringACE2 has the mark of approval
A
EOLUS Tyres’ ultra-high performance SteeringACE2 tyre is now available in Australia and Aeolus continues to honour its commitment to provide all new car tyres of the ACE2 series with the TÜV SÜD certificate of quality. In early 2015, the new high performance summer tyre PrecisionACE2 was awarded the TÜV certificate – and now the SteeringACE2 has achieved the same feat with the TÜV SÜV (Report No. 713060179/AU03). “Our SteeringACE2 has demonstrated in all the demanding internal tests, and particularly in the external tests conducted by TÜV SÜD, that it meets high European quality standards,” said Thomas Wohlgemuth, Aeolus General Manager West Europe. “The SteeringACE2 will particularly impress sports car enthusiasts who place great value on sporty performance, driving stability and brake power, even in critical situations. We are very happy with the response from our customers,

As part of six special workshops, participants were given the opportunity to test the two new Aeolus products

With its simultaneously sporty performance and everyday suitability, the SteeringACE2 is designed with the highest possible safety standard. It is particularly impressive when pushed to the limits on account of its high safety margins on wet roads. The asymmetrical profile increases track stability and the modern tread compound, using silica nanotechnology, combines optimal values when braking on both dry and wet roads, and supports the sporty, predictable handling of the tyres. It achieves an even balance between sporty performance and cost savings due to its low rolling resistance. Following their presentation at the motorec trade fair in Madrid and the ‘ACE2 drive-live’ event on the island of Mallorca in March, the products

All the workshops were designed to test critical driving situations in adverse weather simulations. Both the PrecisionACE2 and the SteeringACE2 succeeded in impressing the critical audience in a live setting. The SteeringACE2 is being distributed exclusively by Toptyres. Established in 1991, Toptyres has five warehouse locations on the east coast and distributes across the nation. “Three years ago we teamed with Aeolus to distribute their PCR products exclusively on the eastern seaboard and the range is always increasing with the introduction of new sizes,” said Jason Nicolls, National Sales Manager for Toptyres. “And The Steering Ace 2 is selling very well,” he added. “The dealers and customer are happy - it is a very high-end product. It’s a great looking pattern and the tyre balances well, handles well and drives well.”

ridgestone has been appointed as one of the tyre suppliers for the new Ferrari California T, with the new V8 turbocharged Ferrari now able to leave the Maranello production line with Bridgestone Potenza S007 RFT (Run-Flat Technology) sport tyres. “Bridgestone is extremely proud to continue its long-standing partnership with Ferrari and be selected to develop tyres for the superb new California T,” said Jake Rønsholt, Managing Director, Consumer Business Unit, Bridgestone Europe. “Potenza S007 has been specially developed to handle the extreme levels of lateral force generated by high-performance sports models such as Ferrari California T.” With the latest generation CCM brakes, F1-traction control system and a powerful 560hp, 4-litre V8 turbo engine, the California T remains a thoroughbred Ferrari which can go from to 0-100km/h in 3.6 seconds and 0-200km/h in 11.2 seconds. Bridgestone engineers developed Potenza S007 based on construction 14

and materials technologies developed during Bridgestone’s 14 seasons as official FIA Formula One tyre supplier. To meet Ferrari’s specifications for improved fuel efficiency, these technologies were combined with Bridgestone’s advanced knowledge of tyres at the molecular level, helping to optimise the mixture ratio and reaction between carbon, silica and rubber, which reduces rolling resistance and fuel consumption.
Bridgestone says the asymmetric pattern design of Potenza S007 features rigid tread blocks to enhance steering response and grip on dry surfaces. The wide outside tread in combination with a specially-tuned carcass construction, including twin steel belts reinforced with two layers of spirally wrapped nylon, provides high-speed durability and maximum cornering grip, even under the most severe load conditions. The Run-Flat Technology option adds safety and peace of mind to the equation. Bridgestone has developed tyres for Ferrari and supplied original equipment to Maranello production cars since the Ferrari 348 in 1990 and many of Ferrari’s flagship models have been fitted with Bridgestone tyres. Bridgestone also supplied Potenza F1 racing tyres to the Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 team between 1999 and 2010 – an era in which Scuderia Ferrari won the Formula1 World Constructors’ Championship eight times and the Drivers’ Championship on seven occasions.

Kumho’s Maxplo concept tyre wins international A’ Design award
K
umho has scooped the top honour (Platinum) in the ‘Futuristic’ class of the coveted Italian A’ Design Awards. The super-low aspect ratio Maxplo is intended to demonstrate how tyres of the future could well look and operate. The ultimate all-weather product, it features tread blocks that adjust to suit all weather conditions from dry to snow-covered roads. In the wet, a clever combination of circumferential and threedimensional grooves effectively pumps water from the contact patch. In typically slippery on/ off road conditions the tread broadens to optimise traction and braking power, while spikes are unveiled to deal with the dangers of snow and ice. Along with the other winners of no less than 89 different categories, Kumho was presented with its A’ Design Award last month at a gala dinner in the stunning environs of Lake Como. There are four levels of the A’ Design Award – Platinum, Gold, Silver and Iron. Kumho Maxplo

Kumho chosen for latest ultra high performance Dodge Viper ACR K umho has been chosen by US manufacturer Chrysler as the original equipment tyre supplier for the latest and ultimate high performance version of the Dodge Viper - the hand-built street-legal Viper ACR (American Club Racer). Dodge chose the Kumho ECSTA V720 using 295/25ZR19 on the front and 355/30ZR19 on the rear. The massive rear ECSTA V720s provide the largest combined contact patch of any production car according to Dodge. Designed and developed especially for the new Viper ACR, the Kumho ECSTA V720 features unique tread patterns and compounds front to rear and have achieved lap times as much as 1.5 seconds faster than dedicated race tyres as well as delivering sustained cornering loads of up to 1.5g during back-to-back testing. Every one of the high performance attributes of the ECSTA V720 are needed for the Viper ACR which boasts a hand-built version of Dodge’s all-alloy 8.4-litre V10 engine, delivering 481kW of power and 813 Nm of torque, which is thought to be the highest for any naturally-aspirated street legal sports car in the world.
It powers through a Tremec 6-speed manual transmission. Dodge product manager Tim Kuniskis says the company’s aim is to dominate road courses around the world and to arm its enthusiast owners with the ultimate Viper track car and. “This car is not a three-lap track special, it has been designed and built to run all day without any tail-off in performance,” he said. To achieve this, Dodge has endowed the 2016 Viper ACR with not only extraordinary power and torque but also significant aerodynamic and suspension upgrades including new Brembo carbon ceramic brakes, with six-pot calipers and 390 mm discs at the front and 360 mm discs and four pot calipers at the rear. Suspension is handled by Bilstein adjustable coil over shock absorbers with ten-way adjustment. Kumho’s ultra-high-performance ECTSA V720 tyres even feature the ACR logo embossed on the sidewall, a salute to the extraordinary power and capability of the Viper. The latest Viper ACR has much to live up to following a line of Vipers dating back to 1999, including the last version, which captured the production

Michelin buys Blackcircles.com
M
ichelin has acquired Blackcircles.com, the number one Internet tyre sales company in the United Kingdom, for a sum of £50 million ($99million). Based in Edinburgh, Blackcircles. com generated $56million in revenue in 2013. Run by Mike Welch, its founder, Blackcircles. com has enjoyed growth of around 20% per annum since 2008, in particular thanks to its “Click & Fit” formula, which includes the sale of the product and the service. In the first quarter of 2015 revenues were up 34% compared to Q1 2014. “I’m delighted to have found in Michelin a partner who shares our passion for customer service, innovation and technology,” said Mr Welch. “The strength of the Michelin Group will allow us to underpin the multi-brand offering that we deploy in each garage, on every street corner. I am convinced that our teams, our customers, our garages and our suppliers will rapidly start to see the benefits of this partnership.” The acquisition of Blackcircles. com will enable Michelin to improve the performance of its mix of distribution channels in the United Kingdom, and in particular to develop synergies with its traditional distributor, ATS Euromaster. Following the acquisition in mid-April of a 40% stake in Allopneus, the leading French online tyre sales company, this acquisition represents for Michelin yet another stage in the implementation of an active e-commerce strategy. “Our strategy illustrates our ambition: to be ever more innovative, efficient and proactive for our customers by offering them products and services suited to individual needs, and by simplifying the entire purchase process, from choosing their tyres to having them fitted by professionals,” said Jean-Dominique Senard, CEO of the Michelin Group.

Lucas oil prevents diesels catching colds this snow season L eading manufacturer of oil and fuel additives, Lucas Oil Products has ensured the annual snow trip doesn’t end by getting stranded in the lodge car park with Lucas Oil Extreme Cold Weather Fuel Treatment. Diesel fuel has a lower freezing point than petrol, and Lucas Oil Products Australia Managing Director Jeff Pahlke said it’s a warning city motorists need to take note of with the official snow season now underway. “The last thing anyone wants is a weekend on the snow fields to end with frozen fuel,” said Mr Pahlke. “In cold weather, diesel begins to solidify and can no longer flow through fuel lines and injectors, so it’s important to prepare for alpine trips properly. Lucas Oil Extreme Cold Fuel Treatment is as essential as snow chains and skis. “Alpine diesel is only available in certain months and regions, but Extreme Cold Weather Fuel Treatment serves as a prevention to diesel crystallising.” Lucas Oil Extreme Cold Weather Fuel Treatment is a diesel additive that lowers the waxing point of fuel, and is easily poured directly into the fuel tank prior to setting off for the snow. “Modern diesels have such great range and motorists can make a

QLD apprentice changes gear to a new career in auto S teven Tong is a 35-year old apprentice mechanic with KMART Tyre and Auto in Birkdale, Queensland. He is completing an apprenticeship after a shift in family fortunes enabled him to pursue a long-held dream. “Over 5 years ago my wife and I were fortunate to move up in the corporate world and as a result we are now financially better off. We worked very hard to get where we wanted to be and we’re now able to follow our passions. I have always had an inkling of doing mechanics; doing something where I could get my hands dirty and fix something that is broken. “This career change popped up. I was working for a big company in the retail industry and browsing through job websites when I found the apprenticeship opportunity with KMART Tyre and Auto. I was fortunate enough to get a hold of the regional manager and basically everything went from there. I was signed up as an apprentice shortly after in September 2013. “It has worked out really well. I have had the opportunity to learn and I was very fortunate to get into a good company that is all about safety and looking after its employees. I have just gone into the second year of my apprenticeship and just 13-14 months into it, it’s been a fun rollercoaster ride that I just don’t want to get off.” Steven says a highlight has been his nomination for the MTA Queensland 2014 Apprentice of the Year Award. “To be one of five finalists in Queensland, to have that recognition in such a short period of time, to have that opportunity, it’s just mind-blowing.” Leeanne Turner, MTAA Super’s CEO says: “I had a fantastic conversation with Steven on the awards night and I was really impressed by his passion and personality. Steven’s career move shows that whatever your age, the automotive industry offers opportunity to anyone who’s up for the challenge. The life experience and maturity Steven brings with him to his new job is being recognised and rewarded – his example illustrates that it’s never too late to follow your dream.” 24 24

I have always found them good and very helpful with the things that I need.” Steven says being an MTAA Super member has also opened up opportunities that he wouldn’t otherwise have had. It was through MTAA Super that Steve got to go behind the scenes at the V8 Gold Coast race in October, an experience he won’t ever forget. “To have that opportunity, it is just once in a lifetime. For someone who just focuses on work and family, to get out and do something different and have that time away is hard to describe. The two days spent there were exhilarating. We saw what goes on, the V8 supercars in the tracks and we had opportunities to meet the drivers and
get photos. It was absolutely brilliant.” If you are aspiring to enter the motor industry, Steven recommends following your dream, irrespective of age. “Employers are after someone to get the job done and who is reliable, whether they are kids, adults or whatever. If you have got a goal or you are aspiring to do something, I think definitely just go for it and work hard to get it. It doesn’t matter what age you are.” MTAA Super’s support of the Automotive Apprentice of the Year Awards and the unique Pathways program help to celebrate and promote the diverse career opportunities in the auto industry. Hamilton stays in control despite Monaco mistake L ewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg and Mercedes continue to dominate the Formula One World Championship, though their seemingly unstoppable procession to a one-two finish at the end of the season has not been without a hiccup or two. At the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix in May, that hiccup ended with a victory for Rosberg and an upset Hamilton who had been leading the race before a belter of a mistake from the Mercedes team. An error in the data regarding Hamilton’s car led the team to miscalculate the gap between Hamilton and Rosberg and the Ferrari of Sebastien Vettel and he was brought in for a change of tyres following the introduction of the safety car after Max Verstappen crashed on Lap 64. The error would see Hamilton lose first position to Rosberg and eventually finish third. Hamilton was less than impressed with the ignominious end to the race. I can’t express the way I feel at the moment,” he said. “I saw the team out in the pit lane on one of the screens and thought Nico was pitting. I came in with full confidence that the others had done the same. This is a race that’s been close to my heart

“. . . I always say to my team and my fans, we win and we lose together.” for years and it’s special to me, so I really wanted to win . . . I always say to my team and my fans, we win and we lose together. You live to fight another day.” And live to fight another day he did, with the British driver going on to take victory at the following race, the Canadian GP, at the beginning of June. It was a much less stressful affair
for the Englishman who, starting from pole and only losing the lead for one lap as he made a pit stop, took the 37th victory of his career. A hard chase by Rosberg would see Hamilton have to keep a wary eye on his fuel usage but he still took the chequered flag with a 2.2second margin. Behind the Mercedes’ drivers, a decent battle between Kimi Raikkinen and Valterri Bottas would end with Raikkinen spinning his Ferrari and Bottas taking third spot for Williams. “I love Montreal!” exclaimed Hamilton. “It’s really special to win here again - the place where I had my first win back in 2007. It was quite close after the stops.

I think because Nico was in my tow he was using less fuel, so I had to save a bit while managing the gap. I had a couple of lock ups but luckily they weren’t too bad and not enough to cause any real problems, so I felt in control.” The season continues to be a difficult one for Daniel Ricciardo and the return
to Canada and the scene of his debut Formula One victory from 2014 was deeply disappointing as the Australian could manage only 13th place. Ricciardo currently sits 7th in the standings on 35 points while Hamilton is in top spot on 151 points, 17 clear of Rosberg.
orge Lorenzo secured his fourth consecutive win in the 2015 MotoGP World Championship with victory at the Catalan Grand Prix on June 14. In front of 100,000 fans, the Movistar Yamaha rider started from third on the grid and, just like at the Italian Grand Prix a race earlier, led every lap until the chequered flag. This latest victory puts Lorenzo just one point behind teammate Valentino Rossi in the championship standings. The only rider to challenge him was Rossi, who crossed the finish line only 0.885 seconds behind. Repsol Honda Team’s Dani Pedrosa finished third – his first podium placing for the season. “Today it was very hot,” Lorenzo said. “Valentino improved a bit in the hot conditions, while I was a bit worse compared to yesterday, but I kept my focus and made no mistakes even though Valentino pushed me so hard. “In the end I could win so the effort I made was worth it.” Reigning champion Marc Marquez crashed out on the third lap of the race and his hopes of retaining his title are looking slim. “I tried to give 100% at my home race but I made a mistake trying to push too much, as I wanted to do well – at all costs – and these things can happen,” he said. Marquez now sits in fifth position in the title race, 69 points behind Rossi with 11 races remaining.

Especially at night when the temperatures came down a bit, the car was fantastic to drive.” In the early stages, Mark Webber’s number 17 Porsche had been leading. However, a one-minute stop-and-go penalty at the end of the first third of the race dropped the car back to fourth. “The guys in the number 19 car did a great job,” said Webber. “All three of them were exceptional for 24 hours. Rentsch crowned King of the Desert once more
S
even times Australian Off Road Champions Shannon and Ian Rentsch have claimed their fourth King of the Desert crown, teaming up with BFGoodrich Tires to once again conquer their toughest challenge – the Finke Desert Race. Running the new BFGoodrich Baja T/A KR2, the Rhodes Racing Jimco buggy of Jack Rhodes and David Pullino came home second. The other KR2 runner, the OBR Trophy Truck of Beau Robinson with stand-in navigator Matt Hanson, completed the podium finishing third outright. BFGoodrich Tires partners not only claimed the top three positions, but also 7 places in the top 10. While his main competitors chose to switch to the bigger 37x12.50R17 BFGoodrich Baja T/A KR2, race winner Shannon Rentsch chose to stick to the 35x12.5x15 BFGoodrich Baja KR on his Jimco buggy. “Once again my BFGoodrich Tires delivered what I needed from them! I could not be happier with how this weekend has gone. I’m not one to look at the record books, but to win here is always special. Four wins now,

all with BFGoodrich Tires, and each win feels just as good,” said Rentsch. BFGoodrich Tires use their experience at the highest level of off-road racing to design and develop their non-competition tyres. A clear example of the direct link between BFGoodrich Racing tyres and the standard BFGoodrich tyres can be seen in the new BFGoodrich All Terrain KO2. The technology designed and
tested in the KR2 that was raced in the Finke Desert Race can be found in the KO2 tyre. It is the first consumer tyre to incorporate the company’s race-proven and race-winning CoreGard technology that gives it unmatched toughness, particularly against sidewall splitting. Compared to the already formidable BFGoodrich All Terrain KO tyre, the new KO2 is 20 percent stronger in this critical off-road performance area.

Ford to return to Le Mans in 2016 F ord has announced it is returning to perhaps the most prestigious automobile race in the world with its new Ford GT race car, based on the all-new ultra-high-performance supercar that goes on sale next year. The Ford GT race car will compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans starting next year and compete in the Le Mans GT Endurance class for professional teams and drivers (LM GTE Pro). The new race car is based on the all-new Ford GT supercar unveiled in January. Both the production car and race car will arrive in 2016 to mark the 50th anniversary of Ford GT race cars placing 1-2-3 at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. Ford went on to repeat its victory at Le Mans in 1967, 1968 and 1969. “When the GT40 competed at Le Mans in the 1960s, Henry Ford II sought to prove Ford could beat endurance racing’s most legendary manufacturers,” said Bill Ford, executive chairman, Ford Motor Company. “We are still extremely proud of having won this iconic race four Ford GT race car times in a row, and that same

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI) have announced they have reached agreement to dissolve the global alliance between the two companies. Goodyear and SRI formed the global alliance in 1999. It primarily consists of four joint venture operating companies, one each in North America and Europe, and two in Japan. After the dissolution, SRI will own 100 per cent of the North American joint venture (Goodyear Dunlop Tires North America) and Dunlop Goodyear Tires (the joint venture for Dunlop / Goodyear-branded OE tyre business in Japan). Goodyear will acquire the European joint venture (Goodyear Dunlop Tires Europe) and Goodyear Japan (joint venture for Goodyear-branded replacement tyre business in Japan). Purchasing and technology joint ventures will be dissolved also. “While we have derived value from the alliance over the last 16 years, Goodyear is well positioned today to pursue our strategy on our own,” said Goodyear Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Richard J. François Michelin, the former head of the Michelin tyre company for 47 years and grandson of the company Founder, Edouard Michelin, died at the end of April, aged 89. Under his leadership, Michelin experienced unprecedented growth, transforming the Group into one of the worlds biggest tyre concerns. “On behalf of the Group’s employees, I would like to pay special tribute to this exceptional man who was universally respected for his values, his convictions, and his vision,” said Jean-Dominique Senard, Chief Executive Officer of the Michelin Group.

A new survey commissioned by Michelin North America has found that four out of five Americans can tell you about the make or model of their first car, but only one in five (21 percent) remember the type of tyres. The survey found that: • More than half of Americans (58 percent) got their first car before age 18. • While half (57 percent) purchased their first car themselves, more than one-third (39 percent) received it from someone else (either as a gift specifically purchased for them or as a hand-me-down). • When thinking about their first car, one-third of Americans (33 percent) were not familiar with how to maintain tyre tread, and only half (53 percent) kept a tyre pressure gauge in the glove box. This US summer, Michelin is kicking off a new effort encouraging consumers to share stories about their #firstcarmoment and learn more about the importance of tyre safety. “As a tyre manufacturer focused on road safety for over 125 years, we feel we have an obligation to remind drivers that whether or not their first -- or current -- vehicle is in the continued on page 32

GERMANY
According to a recently released report from research firm TechSci Research, the tyre market in Germany is forecast to grow at a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of more than 7% during 2015-20. The report, “Germany Tyre Market Forecast & Opportunities, 2020” notes that Germany is one of the leading automotive markets in Europe, and the prominent factors boosting the country’s tyre market are high automobile production and sales. With the presence of premium tyre players like Continental, Michelin, Pirelli, Goodyear, Bridgestone, etc., Germany is one of the most competitive tyre markets in the world. Changing purchasing patterns, expanding consumer base, increasing urbanisation, and introduction of electric and hybrid vehicles are the major factors propelling growth in tyre market in Germany, and with an automotive industry that accounts
for over 30% of total passenger cars manufactured across the globe, tyre sales in Germany are anticipated to grow with a consistent rate during the forecast period. “Apart from quenching huge domestic demand, Germany also caters to the demand of various international automobile markets across the globe,” said Mr. Karan Chechi, Research Director with TechSci Research. “Three-quarters of cars produced in Germany are exported to the outside world, thereby boosting the OEM tyre market in the country. The passenger car segment is dominated by small and medium cars tyres and it is anticipated to remain the major shareholder in Germany tyre market during the forecast period.

Fifteen high school students won college scholarships, and another 50 shared in grants for their schools at The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company’s 16th Annual STEM Career Day event. The scholarships and grants totaled more than $40,000. Goodyear had issued a challenge to students in grades six through 12 – try your hand at designing a clever Rube Goldberg™ Machine utilising science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) principles, to fill a Goodyear blimp. The challenge offered up to $4,000 to traction. This model is released in the sizes 295/80R22.5 and 315/70R22.5. The company says the on- & off-road tyres Hankook AM06 and Hankook DM03, presented in size 315/80R22.5, deliver enhanced toughness, longer tread-life and improved traction. The AM06 and DM03 resist cutting and chipping with their split- and bruise-resistant sidewall rubber and is equipped with a thicker, extended shoulder to prevent sidewall failures. “Our innovation-driven investment in high quality, advanced tyres has paid off with today’s OE supply agreement for the Mercedes-Benz Trucks,” said Mr. Seung-Hwa Suh, Vice Chairman and CEO of Hankook Tire. “Hankook will further expand its premium truck tyre segment in the coming years by building off the cutting-edge ingenuity of our products.”

In addition to exploring the campus, students interacted with representatives from more than 50 local organisations, who hosted hands-on STEM-based activities throughout the day. One of these hands-on activities was a zombie apocalypse-themed challenge requiring use of engineering acumen to design and build a mechanical system. The system students built allowed them to pick up “supplies” while remaining out of reach of the “undead.” “It is important that we encourage our young people to pursue careers in science and technology. Continental’s ContiSportContact 5 has taken top spot in this year’s Ultimate tyre test from the UK’s no1 weekly selling car magazine, Auto Express. The Auto Express Ultimate tyre test pitted the Continental ContiSportContact 5 against ten competitor summer tyres in size 225/45R17. The award recognises the ContiSportContact 5 across a broad spectrum, taking top spot for dry handling, dry braking, wet handling and wet braking.
Auto Express said, “Rarely do we see such a dominant performance in our tests, but it was clear as soon as we started compiling the results that Continental was going to retain its 17-inch title.
