EDITOR’S WORD

Jonathan Nash Editor

W

elcome to the October/ November edition of Australian Tyre Dealer. There have been a number of OE announcements and product launches over the past few weeks. These include Nexen’s deal with Volkswagen to equip its new compact van, the Caddy; Falken’s launch into the Australian market of its ZIEX ZE914 ECORUN high-performance tyre; and Michelin’s announcement that it is launching its Primacy SUV tyre. Internationally, Nexen and Yokohama are moving forward with construction of manufacturing facilities in Europe and the US respectively, while Hankook is launching its Laufenn brand into Europe, aiming to serve ‘smart and price-conscious consumers with a well-rounded range of quality products’. Tyre innovations continue to develop and mature. Hankook reports that it is to deliver its

self-sealing Ventus Prime2 SEALGUARD® tyres as Original Equipment to Volkswagen, starting with the VW Touran, while Falken says it has developed a technology called Silent Core that will further reduce noise and in-cabin drone in future offerings. The interest of the motor industry as a whole was directed at Frankfurt, Germany, in September. The Frankfurt Motor Show is one of the world’s largest automotive exhibitions and an important event for manufacturers. Held every two years, the 2015 show was the largest yet with nearly 1,000,000 visitors attending the 12-day event with 11,000 journalists from 106 countries reporting on the 219 world premieres and the wares displayed by the 1,103 exhibitors. As always, there were some remarkable vehicles on show and you can read about some of them on page 20. In the world of motorsport, many of the big-name championships are nearing their conclusion. But while some champions have already been crowned, the results of other championships are on a knife edge. Lewis Hamilton wrapped up another Formula One title – his third – after claiming victory at the US Grand Prix. His consistency over the season has seen him score 10 wins from the 16 races so far. Following his victory at the earlier Russian Grand Prix, his Mercedes team secured the Constructor’s

Championship for the second year running. In the World Rally Championship, Sebastian Ogier nailed a third championship, and a third straight for his VW team, following the Coates Hire Rally Australia in September. The MotoGP title, meanwhile, looks like going to the wire. Following the remarkable Australian round to the championship, only 11 points separate Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo with two races remaining (at the time of going to press). In the World Endurance Championship meanwhile, the race for the title is even tighter. Former F1 star Mark Webber, along with co-drivers Brendon Hartley and Timo Bernhard, leads the championship by just one point after steering the Porsche 919 Hybrid to victory at the 6 Hours of Fuji race. Just two races remain in the race for the title. You can read more motorsport news from page 26. I hope you enjoy this edition of Australian Tyre Dealer. Feel free to drop me a line if you have some news you would like to share with the industry. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yokohama advancing tyre aerodynamics technology Y okohama says it has made new advances in tyre aerodynamics technology that controls the airflow around tyres in motion. The company says the new development reduces vehicle aerodynamic drag and lift and application of the new technology could lead to the development of new tyres that will raise fuel efficiency and increase vehicle safety. Following its successful research on rolling resistance, Yokohama Rubber has been focusing its research on aerodynamics technology and the reduction of vehicle air drag, including the use of aerodynamic simulation technology. In December 2012, Yokohama Rubber developed a technology for placing fin-shaped protuberances on the inner sidewall of the tyre, in a radial or spoke-like pattern, to reduce the aerodynamic drag inside the wheel wells. The latest development seeks to control aerodynamic flow throughout the vehicle body by using a new fin shape and placement technique that places the fins at angles near the

Aerodynamic flow from the upper part of the aerodynamic tyre with new fin pattern (above right) runs along the side of the tyre and car body while flow from the lower part of the tyre spreads out from car body.

tyre’s shoulder. The fins on the tyre’s outer sidewall help to reduce vehicle aerodynamic drag when on the upper part of the tyre during its rotation while suppressing vehicle aerodynamic lift when on the lower part of the tyre. In addition, the company conducted a large-scale parameter study, in collaboration with a team led by Professor Shigeru Obayashi of Institute of Fluid Science, Tohoku University, that led to new knowledge about the optimal placement of fins on the tyre surface in order to enhance tyre aerodynamics.

To date, Yokohama Rubber’s research on aerodynamics technology has led to a number of new tyre designs that contribute to vehicle fuel efficiency and the company says that the latest breakthrough will enable more optimal placement and shaping of dimples and fins as the company accelerates its research of tyre designs that enhance performance. The aerodynamic tyre with new fin pattern will be on display at the Yokohama display at the 44th Tokyo Motor Show 2015.

Nexen holds groundbreaking ceremony for its new plant in Zatec, Czech Republic N exen Tire, a leading global tyre and tube manufacturer, held a ground breaking ceremony at the site of its new plant in Zatec, Czech Republic, strengthening its efforts in targeting the European market, one of the biggest tyre markets in the world. The company invested more than €829 million to build the new plant on 650,000 square metres of land in Zatec. Nexen Tire plans for the plant to be operational by 2018 and then to gradually increase its annual production capacity to over 12 million units, based on prevailing market conditions. It is expected that the new plant will create more than 1,000 jobs in the region. “The new plant in the Czech Republic is our second manufacturing facility outside Korea, after the one in Qingdao, China. It will serve as significant momentum for the company to make another leap forward” said Nexen Tire Chairman Kang Byung-Joong. “I think it will provide a great opportunity to become a global top player amongst the world’s tyre manufacturers by strengthening our 10

presence in the European market.” The ceremony was attended by Nexen Tire executives, including Chairman Kang Byung-Joong and President Kang Ho-Chan, as well as Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka and his cabinet members. Also in attendance were Ústí Governor Oldřich Bubeníček, Zatec Mayor Zdenka Hamousov, and approximately 300 guests, including European buyers, dealers, and local residents. The construction of the new plant in Zatec was planned in order to meet the growing demands of the European market, and to ensure a stable supply of original equipment (OE) tyres for global car manufacturers, including Volkswagen, Renault, Skoda, SEAT, and others. The Czech Republic is strategically located to serve as a bridge to the Eastern European market, which has been emerging as a promising market for the rest of Europe, and to provide easy access to the biggest European markets, such as Germany, France and the UK. In addition,

Zatec, where the new plant is located, features many favourable attributes, including a large stable workforce. Currently, there are approximately 30 car manufacturers within a 400 km radius of Zatec, providing Nexen Tire an optimal location for supplying original equipment tyres. In addition to the geographical benefits, proactive efforts to attract investment by the Czech Republic government played another decisive role in the construction of the new plant in Zatec. Nexen Tire has been supplying original equipment tyres for various European car manufacturers’ models, including Fiat’s 500X and Ducato, Renault’s Twingo and Volkswagen’s Caddy. The company also executes various marketing activities in order to strengthen its brand awareness and increase sales in the European market, such as signing an official sponsorship with Manchester City Football Club and participating in the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show 2015.

Michelin completes X Multi range M

ichelin has launched the X Multi T into the Australian market, completing the company’s X Multi range. The tyre has been designed specifically for trailers used in regional and highway operations. Michelin says the X Multi T tyre offers three main benefits that combine to offer the truck owner lower operating costs, with no compromise on the safety of their vehicle. Thanks to its unique casing design and improved retreadability, the X Multi T contributes to lower downtime and cost per kilometre. The X Multi

T has excellent resistance to damage with its rounded shoulder design and robust architecture helping to prevent shoulder splits and tread separation caused by lateral scrubbing. The tyre’s wider tread results in more even wear, and U-shaped grooves reduce stone retention making for better retreadability. Michelin say that tyres in its X Multi range are designed to work together to achieve optimum savings for fleet operations, with each tyre addressing the specific challenges linked with the specific position/axle. • X Multi Z: Steer position • X Multi D: Drive position • X Multi T: Trailer position The full MICHELIN X Multi range is available now.

achieve drive-by noise reductions of up to ten decibels compared to standard tyres and can also decrease cabin noise by up to four decibels. The company says testing has shown that tyre performance is not affected and Silent Core lasts for the duration of the tyre’s lifetime. The production process is now mature enough for series production and the Silent Core product is undergoing a pilot phase with a well-known automotive manufacturer, with other brands also having expressed keen interest. “Silent Core is a very simple yet extremely effective solution to the reduction of drive-by and cabin noise created by the tyre,” says Andreas Giese, Product Planning Manager at Falken Tyre. “We’ve received a significant amount of interest from automotive manufacturers about this new technology, which is cheaper and easier to implement than electronic technologies. Initial reports from the pilot test are positive and we’re looking forward to seeing the Silent Core technology progress.”

Bridgestone signs up to support mobile cardiology clinic

B

ridgestone Australia has signed up to support a pioneering program providing front-line specialist medical services to regional and remote communities across Queensland. Heart of Australia was established in 2014 as the nation’s first cardiology clinic-on-wheels. Designed to overcome the challenge of distance faced by many Queenslanders when it comes to accessing medical services, the program is delivered via a 25m-long, purpose-built clinic – driven by a Kenworth prime mover. Bridgestone has committed to providing tyres for the Kenworth K200 prime mover as well as Heart of Australia’s various support vehicles. “The Heart of Australia concept is fantastic; it’s innovative, it’s unique and it’s meaningful and Bridgestone Australia is proud to have signed on as a partner,” said Bridgestone Australia and New Zealand Managing Director Andrew Moffatt. “The Heart of Australia truck and associated support vehicles are covering extensive mileage, often in harsh and unforgiving conditions. We are very pleased to be able to provide them with quality tyres, as well as servicing support, to help them reach their destinations safely and reliably.” Heart of Australia’s self-sufficient trailer provides two private clinic rooms, a testing room and a reception area for patients. It is wheelchair accessible and fully-air-conditioned. The team provides a number of services, including cardiology consultations, stress echocardiograms, exercise stress testing, electrocardiograms and more.

Hankook concepts receive Red Dot and IDEA awards

H

ankook’s concept tyres, created through the collaboration with the German University of Pforzheim were honoured both at the 2015 Red Dot Design Award and 2015 IDEA (International Design Excellence Award). Students from the University’s school of Design, Engineering and Business teamed up with Hankook to create the latest cutting edge concept tyres, including the well-received Boostrac, Alpike and hyBlade. Hankook’s Boostrac concept tyre was designated as the ‘Best of the Best’ at the 2015 Red Dot Award. Boostrac has a variable tread block structure that can expand when required, leading to improved traction. Alpike is designed with unique tyre circumference expansion capabilities, raising its ground clearance for areas affected by heavy snow. hyBlade is equipped with waterwheel treads and side spikes which allow for efficient water draining and enhance the tyre’s steering force in heavy rain conditions. 18

Hankook’s Boostrac concept tyre was designated as the ‘Best of the Best’ at the 2015 Red Dot Award. All three concept tyres received awards at IDEA 2015. The three concept tyres are the result of a joint design competition by Hankook Tire and the Pforzheim University under the theme of ‘A Great Challenge for a Great Change’ as part of Hankook’s Design Innovation project which was launched in 2014. The participating students were asked to develop futureoriented concept tyres that are capable of performing in extreme driving conditions, the kind of environments that can be caused by climate change due to the global warming.

Yokohama’s AVID S34 to be OE on Mazda CX-3 in North America

Y

okohama has announced its AVID S34 has been selected as original equipment on Mazda’s new compact crossover SUV, Mazda CX-3, in the North American market. Two tyre sizes are being supplied: P215/60R1694H and P215/50R18 92V. The AVID S34 was developed by Yokohama by applying the basic design and materials technology used in the company’s BluEarth global brand to the North American AVID brand of all-season passenger car tyres. The company says the AVID S34 contributes to higher fuel efficiency while also providing superior drivability and safety. Yokohama says it is aggressively pursuing tyre development based on its BluEarth tyre technology, and the resulting tyres are increasingly being adopted as original equipment on many new model eco-cars and hybrid vehicles. By pooling their respective expertise, the Research and Development team and Michelin Motorsport team worked together, making the most of their shared experience in the field to design the tyre. Michelin says the Starcross 5 range breaks new ground for the company in the world of motocross. Compared to its predecessors (Starcross 3 and 4) the Michelin Starcross 5 range features a new, lighter casing design offering a weight saving of up to 15 per cent, without compromising

strength and durability, thanks to the use of stronger, higher density materials. The new casing has also been engineered to optimise the size of the contact patch. This, says Michelin, along with aggressive front and rear tread patterns, offers maximum levels of grip for precise steering and traction, even when racing in very difficult conditions. FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW

FRANKFURT SHOW BIGGER THAN EVER

T

he Frankfurt Motor Show is one of the world’s biggest automotive exhibitions and an important event for manufacturers to launch new products. Held every two years, the 2015 Show was the biggest yet with

nearly 1,000,000 visitors attending the 12-day event with 11,000 journalists from 106 countries reporting on the wares displayed by the 1,103 exhibitors and 219 world premieres. And here are a few of those vehicles that caught our eye.

CITROEN CACTUS M

MERCEDES IAA

A new take on the C4 Cactus launched last year, the Cactus M is, the company says, designed with the beach ‘leisure experience’ in mind. Materials used in construction were selected to resist the elements and with draining foot wells and seats made from water and salt-resistant fabric, Citroen says that ‘occupants who have been surfing or swimming in the sea can get into the car without drying or rinsing themselves off. The whole cabin can even be hosed out.’ With that feature, the Cactus M could be popular in Australia.

The Concept IAA, which stands for Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile, is, as the name suggests, a study in aerodynamics design. Mercedes says that when the car reaches 80km/h it transforms itself, with segments extending at the front and rear improving airflow. Powered by a petrol/electric plug-in hybrid producing 279hp, the IAA has a top speed of 250km/h and an all-electric range of 66kms. The car’s style and design cues, as well as many of its technical solutions, can be expected to flow through into production models.

NISSAN GRIPZ

Designed, Nissan says, as a vehicle that can ‘handle the day-to-day commute and deliver a genuine adventure at the weekend’. The Gripz has a carbon frame with no B-pillar – the front doors swing out and 2020

up, while the rear doors are hinged at the rear allowing easy access to the 2+2 interior. Powered by a hybrid system – the petrol engine is used to power the electric motor – the company says the Gripz offers outstanding fuel efficiency.

JAGUAR F-PACE

Jaguar enters the SUV category with its F-PACE, an All-Wheel Drive crossover chock full of state-ofthe-art features. These include Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Driver Condition Monitor system and a Pedestrian Detection Function – a Jaguar first. The Jag comes with a range of engines, including a Supercharged 3-litre V6 delivering 0-100km/h in 5.5 seconds.

PEUGEOT FRACTAL

Peugeot makes beautiful concept cars, and the Fractal is a perfect example. An ‘electric urban coupe’, the French manufacture says the Fractal is an ‘ideas incubator’ that explores new design and manufacturing processes. For instance, more than 80 per cent of

the interior trim surface was created using 3D-printed parts, and the interior has been built with materials inspired by auditoriums and recording studios to enhance the car’s acoustics. The all-electric 2+2 coupe has a 30kW/h lithium-ion battery powering electric motors on the front and rear axles providing 204hp.

HONDA 2AND4

PORSCHE MISSION E

Drawing on the knowledge it has gained from the its ventures into the hybrid-power business, Porsche revealed its all-electric, all-wheel drive, Mission E sports car at the Frankfurt show. With a power system that develops more than 600hp, has a range of more than 500kms, and an innovative 800-volts battery charging system which, Porsche claims, ‘reduces charging time to just slightly longer than it takes to fill a car’s fuel tank today’, this could be, along with the Tesla, a look into our automotive future.

The result of an internal ‘Global Design Project’ competition, the Honda 2&4 was designed to create a driving experience combining ‘the most thrilling elements of riding a motorcycle with the most engaging characteristics of driving a car’. And with an open cockpit and a ‘floating seat’ design – the seat is suspended just above the road – it certainly would be thrilling. The 2&4 is powered by an engine developed for MotoGP – a 999cc v4 four-stroke developing more than 200hp at 13000rpm. 21

Cooper Tire Europe launches Zeon 4XS Sport

C

ooper Tire Europe has launched its latest high performance SUV tyre, the new Cooper Zeon 4XS Sport. Designed for medium and large SUV fitments, the new 4XS Sport replaces the Cooper Zeon 4XS and XSTa, and has been developed with a new asymmetric tread pattern which is specifically designed to cope with the weight of large SUVs. The Cooper Zeon 4XS Sport benefits from input from brand ambassador David Coulthard, who tested development variants of the tyre and provided direction for the final construction and compound selected for the tyre.

22

Introduced as part of Cooper’s new high performance product range, the tread pattern of the 4XS Sport features 3D sipes which have interlocking threedimensional points inside the sipe. Cooper says these 3D sipes provide the same benefits of a traditional

sipe, including helping the tyre warm up and providing enhanced wet grip, but limit the amount of flex in the tread block which helps control the amount of heat generation in the dry and keeps the tread block stable. The Cooper Zeon 4XS Sport boasts numerous advanced features including Noise Damping Structures (dimples) that help break up the noise transmitted by the tyre and the road, a new lightweight construction that provides reduced rolling resistance and improved steering response, and a new tread compound for added grip.

range of new red, heavyduty battery connectors is now available from Narva, providing users with a clear visual difference from existing grey units and eliminating the risk of incorrect connection. The simple colour differentiation ensures easy matching while the red connectors are also keyed differently to the grey units, so red will only connect with the same colour. Given the increasing use of aftermarket accessories in recreational and commercial vehicles, engine bays and under-dashboard areas are often cluttered with additional wiring. The new red heavy-duty battery connectors are a simple yet effective means of managing this. Narva says the connectors were 24

developed following market feedback and requests, and are constructed from impact-resistant polycarbonate housings and feature silver-plated, solid copper terminals. The company says that as well as providing outstanding conductivity, the connectors will reliably perform in temperature extremes ranging from -20° to 105° C. Available in 50A (57200R) and 175A (57215R), the new red connectors complement Narva’s existing range of connectors and

are also fully compatible with the current associated accessories including handle kits, rubber covers and hard plastic covers. The new red connectors can be purchased from leading automotive, transport and 4WD outlets nation-wide at recommended pricing from approximately $10 for the 50A connector.

Up to the Australian Rally, Volkswagen drivers had won nine of the season’s ten rallies. Either Sébastien Ogier or Jari-Matti

Lewis Hamilton takes third world title L ewis Hamilton has won the United States Grand Prix and the 2015 World Championship, following an action-packed, and rain-affected, race at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. In a race that featured non-stop action, Hamilton took the lead from Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg with just seven laps remaining and went on to take the chequered flag and a second successive title. Ferrari’s Sebastien Vettel, the only other driver who could have denied the Englishman the title, finished in third place. Hamilton struggled early on the slippery track and the timing of the pit stops proved to be crucial to victory. Two safety cars (as well as two virtual safety cars) shaped the strategy, with Hamilton emerging from his second and final pit stop in second place, and using the speed advantage of his fresh P Zero Yellow soft tyres to claim the lead from Rosberg. The result launches Hamilton into prestigious company – sharing the honour of being a three-time champion with Niki Lauda, Jackie Stewart, Nelson Piquet, Ayrton Senna and Australia’s

legend of the track, Sir Jack Brabham. Only four men have won more titles – Sebastien Vettel (4), Alain Prost (4), Juan Manuel Fangio (5)

and Michael Schumacher (7). In the post-race media conference, Hamilton was thoughtful and reflective of his achievement. “It’s crazy to think that I am now a three-time Formula One champion,” he said. “I do realise that while I get to enjoy racing a Formula One car, this is a platform for me to inspire young people and I hope that if there is some inspiration to take from today it is to never give up on your dreams, your hopes and your desires. “This is a very humbling experience, especially to equal Ayrton Senna, who meant so much to me and still does today. I feel very blessed.” For Mercedes, Hamilton’s win adds a little more shine to their trophy-winning season – the team had already secured the Constructor’s title at the Russian GP, their 12th victory in 15 races.

Lowndes records win number six at Bathurst C

raig Lowndes and co-driver Steven Richards secured a famous victory in the 2015 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000. It was the sixth victory for Lowndes, and saw him equal legendary drivers Larry Perkins and Mark Skaife on the all-time winners list. It was an emotional win for Lowndes too and he enjoyed enough of a lead as the race neared its finish that he could savour the victory as he piloted his Red Bull Racing VF Commodore to the line. “It’s such a treat to be able to win my sixth Bathurst 1000. It’s great to be back on the podium,” he said. “That last lap I backed off and really enjoyed the lap for what it was. I could see the crowd going wild across the top and

saw their flags flying. It’s a great time for us and it’s great to get back on the podium and to be on the top step with Richo. It’s an honour to have our names on the Peter Brock Trophy. We worked pretty hard today. Our car got better as the day went on which is what we needed. I think I’m pretty set for the year now after winning Bathurst.” In an eventful weekend of racing that saw several heart-stopping accidents, Lowndes’ win – which was also Holden’s 30th victory on the

mountain – moved the 41-year-old into second in the Championship behind Mark Winterbottom. Winterbottom took second place at Bathurst with co-driver Steve Owen – a result that helped secure his position at the top of the V8 championship table. He now sits on 2491 points, ahead of Lowndes on 2092 points. For Lowndes’ co-driver Richards, who competes in the Porsche Carrera Cup category, the win was his fourth Bathurst victory. “As a driver you come here to Bathurst to do your best and the four times I’ve been up here on the podium I’ve driven with some great guys and been involved with some really cool teams. At the end of the day as co-drivers we play our role and try our best to help the team. I was pretty happy with the way I drove the car today. But I’m just a very small cog in a very big wheel.”

Marquez clinches victory at Phillip Island All four riders have received plaudits for what has been deemed one of the great races of the year and the result has made the race for the championship even tighter with just two races remaining. Rossi remains in front on 296 points but his lead over Lorenzo has been cut to just 11 points. Marquez’s win in Australia sees him consolidate third place on the table, 63 points behind Lorenzo. “During the race I felt good and in the opening laps there were many overtakes between me, Andrea and Valentino but that meant Jorge was able to pull a gap,” said Marquez. “Later in the race I was getting some movement from my front tyre, so I decided to back off a little and save my tyres until the last three laps and then I could make an unbelievable final lap and catch Jorge. We have been working hard to improve our results, so I am really happy that we were able to take the victory today.”

his year’s MotoGP championship remains balanced on a knife-edge after a sensational Australian GP at Phillip Island resulted in victory for Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez. The reigning world champ rode an outrageous last lap to pass both Andrea Ianonne and Jorge Lorenzo after what had been an intriguing four-way battle between those three and championship leader Valentino Rossi. Such was the intensity of the fight for victory during the 27-lap contest that Marquez’s finishing time beat the previous Australian Grand Prix record race time by thirteen seconds. Marquez’s final lap was completed in 1:29:280 – the quickest lap of the

race – during which time he managed to overtake Lorenzo to take the chequered flag 0.249 seconds ahead of his compatriot. WORLD NEWS US

Yokohama’s US tyre manufacturing subsidiary Yokohama Tire Manufacturing Mississippi, LLC (YTMM), has completed construction of a new truck/bus tyre plant, the opening ceremony for which was held on October 5. Yokohama Rubber announced it would build a truck/bus tyre plant in West Point, Mississippi, in April 2013, and in May of that year established YTMM to oversee construction of the plant it would operate upon completion. Construction began in September of the same year. Yokohama Rubber invested US$300 million in the new plant, which has an annual production capacity of up to one million tyres. The plant is situated on a 500-acre site (about 200 hectares), and the Company plans to

build additional facilities on the site in line with US demand. At the opening ceremony, Yokohama Rubber President Hikomitsu Noji emphasized the importance of the new plant and thanked all the guests for bringing it to an early fruition, saying “You should know just how much this new plant means to us. Our industry is positioned for solid growth, and we had to move fast. We could no longer sit on the sidelines, without our own state-of-the-art manufacturing facility right here in the United States. Your incredible support and efforts helped make this possible. You gave us everything we needed, and now, a mere two years after we did the ground-breaking on this beautiful 500-acre site, we are ready to make the tyres that will keep America’s trucks rolling down the road and the economy moving.”

EUROPE

Yokohama says its W*drive V905 winter tyre, sold primarily in Europe, has achieved very high scores on winter tyre tests conducted by Europe’s largest automobile club, Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club (ADAC). The tests were performed on 205/55 R16 H size tyres. ADAC tests include wet, dry, snow and ice performance tests that examine the tyres’ handling, safety, and braking performance under those actual road conditions. Assessments are also made for noise, wear, and fuel consumption, under uniform conditions. W*drive V905’s overall score placed it in the top two of 19 recently tested tyres. The YOKOHAMA tyre received the highest possible score for dry-road performance and “good” scores for its performance on wet and snow-covered roads. continued on page 32

Kumho expand UK truck tyre range with new KXS10 steer product

A

fter returning to the UK truck tyre market earlier this year, Kumho has further improved its offering with the KXS10 – a versatile new steer tyre suitable for both regional and long distance operations.

Kumho KXS10

Featuring both the snowflake symbol (3PMSF) and M+S marking, Kumho says it is a genuine allseason product that will provide safe driving in both wet and wintry conditions. The company says the KXS10 also offers an

extended mileage capability thanks to its wide tread and shoulder design, while a special tread compound results in improved handling. Stone ejectors within the groove pattern increase the tyre’s retreading ability. Initially available in 315/80R22.5 size, other fitments will be offered shortly. 31

WORLD NEWS Overall, its performance was rated as “extremely well-balanced”. W*drive V905 is made from a compound that combines micro silica with Yokohama Rubber’s self-developed environmental technology Orange Oil.

TyreSafe, one of the UK’s leading tyre safety organisations, is calling for renewed vigour in the campaign to raise awareness among motorists of the importance of tyre safety following the publication of the UK’s Department for Transport’s (DfT) annual report of accident statistics. The Reported road casualties Great Britain 2014 has revealed the number of all casualties resulting from accidents caused by illegal, defective or under-inflated tyres are similar to the average number over the last five reported years’ figures, while deaths and serious injuries are slightly up. TyreSafe believes the report adds to the existing body of evidence which indicates motorists are neglecting the routine checks which could help

keep them, and other road users, safe. The number of killed or seriously injured (KSI) motorists due to tyre defects rose to 224 in 2014, with total casualties at 1125. The annual average for the five reported years since 2010 are 198 KSIs and 1135 for all casualties. Of the 48 people killed in accidents attribute to vehicle defects, 28 were attributed to defective tyres. “While 2014 figures do not reflect a dramatic worsening of tyre-related accident casualties over the past five years, TyreSafe considers the current status quo unacceptable,” said Stuart Jackson, Chairman of TyreSafe. “The DfT’s figures support TyreSafe’s findings which shows too few of Britain’s 32

motorists inspect their vehicle’s primary safety feature before taking to the roads. Every day, tyre retailers, the fire service, the police, and breakdown recovery services see examples of this neglect as they come face-to-face with a substantial number of tyres in appalling, unroadworthy condition. Unlike other vehicle components, tyres can easily be checked visually - it is ultimately the driver’s responsibility to ensure that their vehicle is safe and clearly need to take immediate action if tyres are flat, have lumps, bumps or cuts - or if they’re bald. “Defective tyres dramatically reduce the effectiveness of a vehicle’s steering and braking systems, can potentially suffer catastrophic deflations and potentially add to the numbers of road casualties.”

KOREA

Nexen Tire has been recognised as an outstanding supplier by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) receiving an ‘Outstanding Quality Performance’ award at FCA’s Outstanding Supplier Quality Awards event held in September in Korea. FCA evaluates technical skills, quality, and brand value in order to give recognition to the most outstanding suppliers each year. Hankook Tire and premium outsole company Vibram® have partnered to develop futuristic concept tyres and shoes in a cross-industry collaboration. Hankook has utilised Vibram®’s hyper-functional design for its latest concept tyres, while simultaneously enabling Vibram® to integrate cuttingedge tyre technologies into its footwear offerings. In total, five products are being unveiled. Hankook Tire is releasing two off-road concept tyres, the DynaMIX and DynaSYNC, and Vibram® is releasing three concept shoes, the DynaTREK, DynaSTRYKE BKL, and Omnifuse. Hankook Tire’s DynaMIX and DynaSYNC were inspired by the flexible blocks found on the outer soles of Vibram®’s hiking shoes. These blocks are designed to change their contact positions in response to variations in ground surface. The use of different layer structures also allows for multiple style choices. DynaMIX tyres take advantage of Vibram®’s Ultra-light 3D Cocoon Technology. Multi-direction geometric dimensional blocks serve to protect the tyres from road impacts. At the same time, traction, block stability and flexibility are improved while sidewall weights are reduced. The texture and design of particular tread blocks in the pattern have been tailored to maximise overall performance. The

glitter surface of the tyre is polished which, the company says, enhances handling and wet performance, while at the same time promoting greater control at faster speeds. The geometric sidewalls integrate Hankook’s wet-tech holes, enabling the sidewalls to achieve greater flexibility and disperse shocks. DynaSYNC features Vibram®’s Carrarmato lugs design on its tread pattern to improve traction in mountainous terrain. The honeycomb structure grooves prevent puncture or tyre chips due to gravel or stones and the sidewall comes in a variety of color compounds, allowing car owners to match the tyres to their car’s body color. Its dual-layered sidewall structure prevents cracking by enhancing block stiffness and reducing severe deformations during cornering and high-speed maneuvers. “This joint project fits ideally with our ongoing commitment to investing in technological innovations and performance-oriented designs. Moreover, from a macro-perspective, the project reflects Hankook’s longstanding core company value – progressive innovation,” said Mr. Ho Youl Pae, Head of Hankook Tire Europe. “This momentum will be carried forward in the future as the company continues to take an authentic, meaningful approach to meeting the challenges of future driving experience.”

Cooper Tire Europe has launched its all-new Cooper Zeon. Replacing the successful Cooper Zeon CS6, Cooper says the newly developed Zeon CS8 incorporates a range of advanced technologies that combined, mean it offers a host of added features and benefits. The new tread pattern of the Cooper Zeon CS8 is designed with large circumferential grooves that clear water quickly from the contact patch to reduce aquaplaning in the wet. It features sequenced tread blocks to reduce generated noise, whilst dimples in the tread grooves help break up the noise transmitted by the tyre and road interaction to give a quieter ride. The CS8 also features Cooper’s innovative Wear Square™, an exclusive visual indicator on the tyre that allows drivers to quickly and easily assess the remaining tread life. Built into the tread design, this innovation features the outline of a square located at six points of reference around the inside and outside of the tyre tread. As the tyre wears, the Wear Square transitions among five stages, beginning with a full square on new tyres and transforming into an exclamation mark when it is time to replace the tyre. The Wear Square can also signal uneven tyre wear and possible wheel alignment issues. The tread pattern of the Cooper Zeon CS8 features 3D sipes, which provide the same benefits of a traditional sipe but limit the amount of flex in the tread block which helps control the amount of heat generation in the dry and keeps the tread block stable. Cooper says the CS8’s new tread compound uses the latest available polymer technology and advanced mixing techniques to deliver excellent wet and dry grip while also reducing rolling resistance for great fuel efficiency. “Cooper Tire is dedicated to continuous research and development, and this latest passenger car tyre in our range epitomises this philosophy,” said Derek Carruthers, Sales and Marketing Director, Cooper Tire Europe. “Featuring our latest technologies, the CS8 is a tyre that not only delivers ‘A’ grade wet grip, but also great handling. It’s responsive to small driver inputs and keeps the car stable at all speeds.” 33
