IT HAS BEEN a very busy period for our industry as we close the book on the 2021/22 financial year and hit the ground running for the new FY. KELLIE DEWAR In breaking news, DEPUTY CEO | GENERAL MANAGER MEMBER SERVICES the Motor Vehicle Service and Repair Information scheme has come into effect as of 1 July 2022. This scheme will give Australian repairers the opportunity to access vehicle information from Original Equipment Manufacturers for a fair cost. It is important to note that in order to access information for hybrid, electric, and hydrogen vehicles, repairers and technicians must prove they have completed AURETH101 (or equivalent) – Depower and reinitalise battery electric vehicles. The MTA Institute has this unit of scope and is currently taking expressions of interests through courses@mtai.edu.au. I recently attended a roundtable with industry and government stakeholders to discuss the review into written-off vehicles. This is an issue our members have been very vocal about, and we will continue to work with relevant government departments to ensure an acceptable outcome, with a focus on safety, is achieved. We will keep members up to date on the progress of this review. Finally, I was pleased to hear the state government has accepted recommendations in the Training Ombudsman’s Report into support for apprentices and trainees, which included strategies for encouraging increased participation among women. MTA Queensland supports pathways for women in the automotive trades, with our new Driving Auto Women’s Careers project already gaining great traction. It is hoped these recommendations will continue to aid our efforts.

Ian Payne’s Automotive Engineering in Townsville is one such workshop where Ian and his son Nicholas run a successful business offering a wide range of services. Nicholas’s passionate participation in the local motorsport community provides a prime platform to share their good work. Tell us about the products and services you offer at Ian Payne’s Automotive Engineering? IP: We are a multi-purpose shop offering

our customers full in-house engine repairs, servicing and maintenance as well as engine reconditioning. Our shop is a favourite for car dealers in the area who need machining operations completed. We exchange cylinder heads for late model petrol and diesel motors. Ours is the only shop where you can drive in and we will take out the motor, recondition it for you and put it back in so you can drive away.

What is your background in the automotive industry? IP: I started my career as an apprentice

fitter and turner at Automotive Component Services (ACS) in Ogden St in Townsville on the 27th of November

In 1976 I transferred to Ayr to run the ACS workshop and I stayed there until 1991. I opened the doors to my own workshop in 1991 when I started the business from scratch in Ayr. In 1998 the shop was relocated to Townsville as we searched for a larger marketplace with more customers. Are you still hands on in the business today? IP: I am still on the tools 5 days a week from 6am each day.

Who is in your current team? IP: My son Nicholas started in 2007 as an

apprentice mechanic in the workshop. Since then, he has completed his trade and gone on to complete business management qualifications which are very useful in the day-to-day operation of the workshop. Joe Liddy is an engine reconditioner in the workshop and is 74 years old. Joe was my first boss, and it was under Joe that I completed my fitter and turner apprenticeship at ACS. John Tooth is an engine reconditioner on the team and he too is 74 years old and brings a lifetime of experience to the job. Marc Caddies is another engine reconditioner who has been a part of the team for 10 years. Bryan Waples and Erik Anderson are trade qualified mechanics, while Kim Herd is a fitter and welder in the workshop. My partner Carol Mijic helps out in the office with administration support.

You put your son Nicholas through his apprenticeship. Do you take on many apprentices? IP: In the past we have put through

apprentices, but I haven’t put any through since Nicholas completed his trade. However, we often have work experience students from local high schools join us to learn about the trade. If the right person comes along, we will consider an apprenticeship for them. We like to support our local schools and tech colleges with work experiences.

Do you sponsor a lot of local motorsport and individual competitors? IP: We sponsor a lot of individual

competitors in local burnout competitions and the Formula 500 competition at the local speedway. Nicholas is well known in the local burnout scene and a variety of motorsport events in his Falcon ute. He has competed very actively and has even won a few competitions. It is great to sponsor and support local kids who are having a go in a safe environment but there isn’t any real benefit to the marketing of the business.

What are your plans for the next few years? IP: I am just continuing to cruise along and keep doing what we are doing. I hope that Nicholas will take over the business from me one day so I can retire.


What advice would you give to a young you starting out in the industry? IP: Be enthusiastic, be dedicated and have an attitude to learn.

How much importance do you place on social media for your business? IP: We don’t spend a great deal time or

money on social media. Our marketing is focused largely on maintaining our good reputation and sharing it via word of mouth.

What do you see as the greatest advancement in technology for your business? IP: The access to information on the internet and hubs of info such as MTA Queensland to quickly and affordably source information. Gone are the days of

ringing around and trying to find a part or the right information.

Has Covid impacted your business? IP: Yes. Covid has had a positive

impact with people staying home to do repairs and maintenance on their vehicles. They have cash to spend on their cars and they want to spend it locally. The secondhand market for cars has become very expensive and so people have fixed what they have rather than trading their cars in for a newer or better model.

Do you consider that the advancements in electric cars will have an impact on your business? IP: I haven’t seen an impact from

electrical vehicles yet. We do training with staff when training is available locally or online. The most accessible form of training seems to be online but when it is in Townsville, we make a point of having staff attend in person.

How long have you been a member of MTAQ? IP: I joined MTA Queensland in 1992 July 2022 Motor Trader | 11

What do you do with your spare time? IP: Living in North Queensland is

paradise and I take advantage of every spare moment. I have a boat and I love going to the islands. My partner and I spend our weekends beachcombing, island hopping, fishing, and spending time with the six grandkids.

DIGITAL LICENCE TRIAL COMING TO TOWNSVILLE

Q

UEENSLAND'S FIRST DIGITAL Licence app will progress to an expanded trial in Townsville in late 2022, followed by a statewide rollout in 2023. The Digital Licence app will allow Queenslanders to easily and securely store their driver licence, marine licence and/or photo identification card on their mobile devices. The app will be free, optional and opt-in, and Queenslanders will continue to receive physical cards for their licences and photo identification cards upon renewal. Legislation was passed in July 2020 making the digital licence the legal equivalent of the physical licence. The Digital Licence offers a safe and more convenient way for Queenslanders to digitally share and validate their identity. The app has been developed with security and privacy at its heart, with features built into the app to protect personal data and ensure authenticity. Using sharing bundles, users can control the information they share and with whom they share it. They can share just their photo and they are over 18, their full licence details as well as a digitally signed, printable PDF. Secured behind the user's native phone security and a six-digit access PIN, the app provides protection from identity theft and fraud. The Digital Licence can be verified in two ways: 1. You can do a simple visual check, keeping an eye out for security features like the pulsating Queensland Coat of Arms or the last online refresh date. 2. You can scan a user's Digital Licence using your own Digital Licence app, or a Digital Licence Verifier app. The user's app will provide a QR code which verifies details

through an encrypted exchange. (Note: the QR code cannot be scanned by the phone camera) Scanning a user's Digital Licence in this way is the safest and most secure form of verification, allowing businesses to confidently meet their identification monitoring and management obligations. Should you need to keep a photocopy of a driver licence in your records, for example, when someone buys a new or used car, the app allows the user to generate and share a PDF using the phone's native sharing options, like SMS and email. The PDF contains all the information from their driver licence and can be stored in the same way you currently store the photocopies. It is also digitally signed for additional protection. The Digital Licence app is being developed to comply with the International Standard for Mobile Driver Licence Apps (ISO18013-5), published in September last year. This means the app will meet a set of internationally agreed standards for verifying, authenticating and keeping your information safe, secure, and private. In addition, Queenslanders will be able to use their Digital Licence in any jurisdiction which has also built their Digital Licence to meet the standard.

WHAT IS THE MOTOR VEHICLE SERVICE & REPAIR INFORMATION SHARING SCHEME? THE MOTOR VEHICLE Information Scheme (MVIS) came into operation on July 1, enabling independent repairers the option of accessing vehicle service and repair information from manufacturers. According to the ACCC, under the mandatory scheme all Australian motor vehicle repairers and relevant RTOs have fair access to the information needed to service and repair cars or provide training. This includes software updates to connect a new spare part with a car, and information and codes for computerised systems from a car manufacturer. The new law applies to passenger vehicles and light goods vehicles other than omnibuses, manufactured on or after 1 January 2002. The scheme’s adviser is the Australian

Automotive Service and Repair Authority (AASRA), which has been appointed by the Australian Government and is responsible for managing the scheme and reporting to government on its progress. AASRA has created a subscription hub to access manufacturer information. Subscription enables access to participating manufacturer portals – covering 90 per cent of the vehicles sold in Australia today – and subscribers also have access to the AASRA help desk. Nonparticipating brands provide their own access to subscription services. Accessing information from any organisation under the MVIS scheme requires repairers meet certain criteria, including that an individual has successfully completed training on highvoltage systems. MTA QUEENSLAND STATE BUDGET BRIEF 2022-23

KEY INITIATIVES IMPACTING MTA QUEENSLAND MEMBERS AND MTA INSTITUTE THE QUEENSLAND GOVERNMENT announced the 2022-23 budget on 21 June 2022 against a backdrop of an improving economy post-COVID-19 but uncertainty regarding the impact of a rising consumer price index and interest rates. The 2021-22 financial year is forecast to have a net operating surplus of $1.9B, (“Back in Black”) as compared to a $3.4B deficit forecast at the 2021-22 budget announcement. This surplus reflects Gross State Product growth 3 per cent in 2021-22. In 2022-23 growth is expected to moderate slightly to 2.75 per cent. Unemployment is expected to be maintained at between 4 and 4.25 per cent over the forward estimates.

THE 2021-22 FINANCIAL YEAR IS FORECAST TO HAVE A NET OPERATING SURPLUS OF $1.9B, (“BACK IN BLACK”) AS COMPARED TO A $3.4B DEFICIT FORECAST AT THE 2021-22 BUDGET ANNOUNCEMENT. With COVID-19 still contributing to stressed public hospitals, the budget has a strong focus on health-related initiatives with a record $23.6B health budget for 2022-23. Public transport infrastructure projects also feature strongly in the budget announcement of a capital works program of $59B over four years.


Current training and labour market programs (like the Skilling Queenslanders for Work) are continued at current levels. The election of the Albanese Government and its budget to be delivered in October 2022 may bring changes impacting MTA Queensland in relation to skills development programs.

INDUSTRY RELEVANT BUDGET ANNOUNCEMENTS Zero Emissions Vehicle Strategy 202232 and Action Plan 2022-24 The budget provides $45M over three years for the continuation of the $3,000 rebate for zero-emission vehicles up to a value of $58,000 along with $10M for fast charging stations over two years. Mentoring for Growth Ongoing funding will be provided for the Mentoring for Growth (M4G) initiative that matches volunteer business experts with small business operators to advise them free of charge. Made in Queensland The Made in Queensland initiative will receive $40M over the next two years to assist small and medium manufacturers to increase their international competitiveness through new technology. Manufacturing Hubs Grant Program This program will receive $10M over two years to support regional manufacturers to assist them to scale up their businesses

to take advantage of growth opportunities. These hubs provide a place for local manufacturing businesses to receive expert advice and support for transition into advanced manufacturing. Payroll Tax Reform The budget recalibrates payroll tax rates which will see a reduction in payroll tax for small to medium businesses (up to $10.4M payroll). It is expected that some 12,000 businesses will pay less payroll tax through this initiative where payrolls under $10.4 million will save up to $26,000 per year. Mental Health Levy To address the mental health issues, the budget imposes a mental health levy on some 6,000 of the state’s largest employers to fund a $1.6B mental health program over five years. This mental health levy will only affect large businesses with national payrolls of more than $10 million. There is also a $6.75 million Small Business Wellness and Support package which will engage six Small Business Wellness Coaches to help those businesses hardest hit by the pandemic and the recent floods. Extended apprentice and trainee rebate The Queensland Government announced a one-year extension to the 50 per cent payroll tax rebate on exempt apprentice and trainee wages. The rebate, which was set to end on 30 June 2022, will now be available until 30 June 2023.

Repairy creates a URL web address that is unique to the workshop, and this can be dropped onto any online page – be it Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and so on. If a potential customer discovers the workshop via one of these channels, the URL link will take them directly to the workshop’s Repairy booking page. For a workshop, this means that no matter from where a customer contacts them to book a job, it all comes through their Repairy dashboard interface and there’s no need to go searching through emails, phone messages, Facebook messages or website contact boards to work out what jobs are coming in – it’s all streamlined into the one place. While all the above explains Repairy’s usefulness as an online customer booking tool, it can be used for offline customers too. A workshop can use the dashboard as a regular booking platform to schedule jobs for walk-in or phone-in customers, making it the only scheduling tool required. Repairy is the brainchild of Qivin Tang, a 33-year-old Melbourne-based former mechanic and self-confessed problem solver, who founded the company in 2019 with the goal to develop a tool to enable workshops to be a part of, and be successful in, the online revolution. “I realised the aftermarket auto industry can be a bit slow in terms of adoption of technology,” said Qivin. “A lot of mechanics deliver a really good customer experience and do really good work but that is not reflected online, and one of the reasons we built this tool is to enhance that.” And it is making a difference, Qivin added. platform are, he said, seeing significant improvements, with the automatic messaging cutting down the rate of noshows, and the automatically created and easy-to-follow links for customers to write a Google review proving particularly effective. “We have seen workshops decrease noshows by 85-90 per cent,” he said. “And we have workshops that have increased their review rate by 250 per cent. And because of that, their Google search and online presence dramatically rises. Would you choose someone who has 500 reviews or someone who has a dozen reviews?”

HE RACQ MOTORFEST event has long been a show marked on the calendars of car enthusiasts in Queensland. There’s always an epic mix of cars on display and, with an eye on the industry’s development, it is something of a showcase for new vehicles, modern technologies, and mobility solutions. The 2022 edition was spectacular. Held at the RNA Showgrounds in Brisbane, the event welcomed vintage cars, classic cars, exotics, electric vehicles, muscle cars . . . every category of car was on show and numbered in the hundreds. 28 | Motor Trader July 2022

Especially cool for Motorfest attendees this year was the astounding collection of Jaguars brought together to celebrate the iconic company’s centenary year. Amongst the classics prowling the Showgrounds was a 1961 MKII sedan, a 1958 XK Roadster, a beautiful 1994 XJS Convertible, a 2021 F Type Coupe, more E-Types than you’ve ever seen in one place at one time, and a real rarity (and treat to see) – a 1939 SS Jaguar drop head coupe. Over at the vintage car display were some real beauties too, including a 1925 Dietrich B3-6 Convertible, a 1954 Alvis Convertible, a 1930 Aston Martin sedan, a 1934 Fiat Balilla 508S Coupe, a Porsche 356 and a gem amongst the gems, a 1929 4.5-litre Supercharged Bentley Blower. Thousands of people attended the RACQ Motorfest this year and it should be noted that the entrance fee – just $2 – goes to the RACQ Foundation which supports community groups across the state. VIRITECH DEBUTS THE APRICALE HYDROGENPOWERED HYPERCAR

V

IRITECH, A UK-BASED developer of hydrogen powertrains, showcased its Pininfarina-designed Apricale supercar at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last month. The Apricale features several innovations related to hydrogen fuel cell technology. For example, rather than have the hydrogen fuel tanks as chassis attachments, Viritech has designed and built lightweight graphene composite tanks that are capable of being used as a structural component of the monocoque chassis. That chassis is constructed of carbon fibre composite, while the body is made of recycled carbon/natural fibre. Together with other weight saving features - including Dymag carbon fibre rim with

The fuels cells are combined with Ultra High Power lithium-ion cells in a 6kWh battery pack, and Viritech’s Tri-Volt Energy Management System that enables a variable mix of energy to be used from both the fuel cells and the batteries. While the


700bar hydrogen system fuel cells provide the main motive power for the Apricale, the battery provides additional power for acceleration and high-performance driving. Viritech claims the very fast charge and discharge batteries enable the Apricale’s regenerative braking system to recover many times more kinetic energy than a traditional battery electric vehicle. There are two 400kW drive motors – one on the front axle and one on the rear – and Viritech says that because of the car’s light weight there is limited requirement for torque vectoring, so the driveline uses a pair of mechanical differentials. The suspension features allround pull-rod torsion bar. Those Dymag wheels are shod in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres, and carbon composite brakes, with AP Racing 6-piston front and 4 piston rear calipers, provide the stopping power. While hydrogen fuel cell technology is often viewed as one that can power heavy vehicles – and quite a few manufacturers are developing such trucks – it is also being developed

for passenger cars, and the Apricale would suggest that it can be developed for performance cars too. Its technology, combined with its light weight, means its performance numbers are quite spectacular. It punches out some 800kW and 1000Nm, can top 320km, reach 100km/h in 2.5 seconds, and a claimed range of more than 560kms before refuelling is needed. 25 examples of the Apricale are scheduled for production, with deliveries expected in 2024. "Hydrogen fuel cells have, until now, been used as range extenders for powertrains with batteries at their heart,” said Matt Faulks, Viritech's CTO. “We've essentially turned that approach on its head, developing a powertrain around multi-hundred kW fuel cell system supported by a lightweight but highly efficient battery. This delivers hypercar performance for Apricale, but at less than half the weight of typical BEV hypercars. "Not only does this reduction in weight transform Apricale's driving dynamics, but our reduced reliance on batteries means less demand on rare earth minerals." Viritech is developing its hydrogen fuel tech for other vehicle uses, with the company also developing a heavy truck called the Jovian, and an SUV. July 2022 Motor Trader | 35

BMW MOTORRAD AUSTRALIA INTRODUCES CONNECTEDRIDE COM U1 COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

MW MOTORRAD AUSTRALIA is introducing a new communication system, ConnectedRide Com U1, that enables the rider to talk to their pillion passenger or other group members while riding, listen to music together, make phone calls or follow announcements of the navigation system. The system can be attached to helmets such as the BMW Motorrad StreetX, GS Pure and Sao Paulo and audio performance is delivered by HD-quality speakers fitted in the helmet. Operation is carried out via four buttons or the Com U1 app. Various functions can also be activated via voice control. The ConnectedRide Com U1 features an FM radio that allows up to 10 radio stations to be saved. Channel search is at the touch of a button or via the app. Battery life is up to 13 hours with a quick charge taking one hour. In addition, the quick-charge function enables operating times of 3.5 hours (Mesh Intercom) or six hours (Bluetooth Intercom) after only 20 minutes of charging. Via Bluetooth, the range of the Intercom is up to 2km in open terrain. Using Mesh, this range can be extended to up to 8km in open terrain if at least six riders are connected and riding at a maximum distance of 1.6km from each other. For optimum range in Mesh mode, the unit is equipped with an antenna that can be folded in and out.

Options for communication via Mesh include Group Mesh Intercom that allows for the creation of private, closed groups with up to 24 participants. Also available is Multi-Channel Open Mesh Intercom which enables switching between nine communication channels. Anyone on the same channel can talk to the group. This option supports an almost unlimited number of riders as long as they are within range. The Universal Intercom function can also be used to establish a call connection to a person using a headset made by another manufacturer.

REDWOOD AND TOYOTA TO COLLABORATE ON EV BATTERY RECYCLING AND MATERIALS SUPPLY

R

EDWOOD MATERIALS - a US company that works on the recycling and reuse of electric vehicle (EV) batteries and their components, -has teamed up with Toyota Motor North America, which will take advantage of Redwood’s technologies to encompass collection, refurbishment and remanufacturing of EV battery materials. Redwood aims to drive down the environmental footprint and cost of lithium-ion batteries by offering largescale sources of anode and cathode materials produced from recycled batteries. Materials such as lithium, nickel, cobalt and graphite are recovered from the batteries and go back into the supply chain to make batteries for new EVs. The company notes that the first wave of battery-electric vehicles retiring from roads today, ready for recycling, are predominantly Prius vehicles, and the company says they will focus on testing and recycling Toyota batteries, creating end-of-life pathways for the hybrid electric vehicles.

It will also amend the definition of “serious misconduct” in the Fair Work Regulations to include sexual harassment, to clarify that this behaviour can justify summary dismissal. In addition, education and guidance on unfair dismissal and other workplace rights will be updated. The Act will include a ‘stop sexual harassment order’ by clarifying that a stop-bullying order is available in the context of harassment.

ORD HAS SHOWN just what it can do in the field of electric performance with the unveiling of the extraordinary Electric SuperVan at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK. The van is a beast, boasting four electric motors, a 50kWh liquid-cooled battery and a control system that together produce approximately 1470kW for a sub twosecond 0-100kmh sprint. The all-electric demonstrator was developed by Ford Performance and STARD in Austria. The bespoke chassis includes components from Ford’s E-Transit Custom van. Inside, the SuperVan uses Ford’s SYNC in-cab touchscreen technology from road-going Ford models plus additional control functionality. Enhanced connectivity enables real-time data transmission for remote vehicle management. Selectable drive modes and regenerative braking technologies similar to those on Ford production electric vehicles also feature. The body has a front splitter, side skirts and rear diffuser, and the rear has cutaways and a dorsal fin that flow into the rear wing to generate downforce. Under that dramatic body there is double wishbone suspension at each corner, motorsport-grade front and rear subframes, uprights, and brakes that deliver the braking and steering capability to match the van’s power. 40 | Motor Trader July 2022

The interior includes a full roll cage and racing seats to FIA standards, plus the large SYNC touchscreen taken from Ford’s production vehicles. That touchscreen enables control of the selectable drive modes that tailor the Electric SuperVan’s torque maps, regenerative braking and control responses to suit different driving scenarios. Modes include 'Road' for cases of ‘normal’ driving, 'Track' for balancing speed and cornering with racing slick tyres, 'Drag' for maximum acceleration on drag strips while using drag racing radial tyres, 'Drift' for drifting, agility demonstrations and snow driving, and 'Rally' for performance on tarmac and gravel rally stages with special tyres. pit-lane speed limiter. At low speed, an ECO Mode keeps the motors at optimal efficiency, turns the regenerative braking up to maximum and cuts drive to the

rear axle. For maximum speed, an E Boost button puts a temporary power and torque boost at the driver’s fingertips. This new electric SuperVan is the latest in a series that Ford in Europe has created over several decades, with the first appearing in 1971 featuring a midmounted engine taken from the Le Mans-winning Ford GT40. The SuperVan 2 had a fibreglass version of the Transit Mk.2 body draped over the 434kW Cosworth V8 of Ford’s C100 racing car. SuperVan 3 was powered by a 478kW Cosworth HB engine shared with Formula 1 cars of the era.

FORD TECHNICIANS IN THE US NOW USING REMOTE ASSISTANCE TECHNOLOGY

F

ORD DEALERSHIPS ACROSS the US now have access to a very nifty, state-of-the-art remote viewing technology allowing their technicians to receive real-time assistance from team members at the company’s Ford Technical Assistance Center (TAC). The two-way, hands-free headset, known as See What I See (SWIS), allows for both visual and audio communication between dealership techs and the TAC team, and the system's augmented reality capability allows TAC team members to display modified or enhanced images on the headset for the dealer technicians to view. “The remote technology is designed to assist the technicians as they’re working on vehicles – with the goal of increasing efficiency and decreasing down time for customers,” said David Green, Ford General Service Equipment Program Specialist. “This technology modernises and simplifies our operations, benefiting everyone involved. “We had one case where a technician reported the vehicle would not recognize the low tyre pressure sensors. When the tech contacted the Hotline using SWIS, they quickly found out they were using the wrong tool when they tech held it up in front of the camera. Once the right tool was used, everything was programmed just the way it should.”

According to Ford, TAC has a team of 150 technicians that receives some 5,000 calls from dealership technicians across the US each week looking for support or answers regarding a variety of issues. Of those, about 200 cannot be diagnosed by phone and field agents must be sent out to check out the issue in person. Ford has activated 1200 of the headsets so far with more than 350 SWIS calls to TAC in the 90 days leading up to the end of June. All US-based dealers should have SWIS by November of this year. Currently, SWIS is for diagnostic assistance, but Ford says its designers are working to enhance the headsets to add more specific use cases. Those cases include mobile service teams who could use SWIS to remote in from someone’s driveway where they are performing a service.


BUICK COMMITS TO ALL-ELECTRIC LINE-UP BY END OF THE DECADE AMERICAN CAR BRAND Buick is to switch to a fully electric line-up in North America. The brand, founded in 1903 and now a division of General Motors, is aiming to bring its first electric vehicle (EV) to market in 2024. Buick’s future EV products will carry the Electra name and get a revamped brand identity to go along with electric models that reflect a new global brand design language. A hint of what is to come can be seen in the new Buick Wildcat EV concept on Pages 90 to 91. “The Buick brand is committed to

an all-electric future by the end of this decade,” said Duncan Aldred, global vice president, Buick and GMC. “Buick’s new logo, use of the Electra naming series and a new design look for our future products will transform the brand.”

eFUEL FACILITY TO BE BUILT IN TASMANIA

IF GLOBAL, A leading eFuels company in which Porsche has a stake, has announced that it has begun the development of Australia’s first large-scale, carbon-neutral eFuels production facility in Tasmania. Electricity based fuels, or eFuels, are carbon neutral fuels produced from renewable energy, green hydrogen and carbon dioxide taken from the atmosphere. They have the same chemical properties as fossil-based fuels and, as a result, can be used as direct substitutes in existing engines and infrastructure. The HIF Tasmania Carbon Neutral eFuel Facility will be located approximately 30km south of Burnie, and the company said that with 250 megawatts of electrolyser capacity and at least 40 years of operating life, the facility design is similar to other eFuels facilities in Chile and the US that HIF Global is preparing for construction in 2023. The HIF Tasmania facility has been designed

to be emissions free, with the water for electrolysis primarily extracted from biowaste, The company said that it expects to begin construction in 2024, prioritising local employment and technology. “Our global plan is to produce over 8 billion litres a year of carbon neutral eFuels - enough to decarbonise 5 million vehicles,” said Cesar Norton, President and CEO of HIF Global. “Australia represents our third decarbonisation hub around the world. Australia has exceptional renewable energy resources that can be transformed into liquid fuels and used in existing engines. Today, we begin the first step in Tasmania to produce hydrogen from renewable energy, capture carbon dioxide from a biogenic source and produce highly competitive eFuels that will be the carbon neutral energy of tomorrow.” Porsche acquired 12.5 per cent of HIF Global earlier this year, and has been researching the use of renewable fuels for some time. DAIMLER TESTING FUEL-CELL TRUCK WITH LIQUID HYDROGEN

IKE OTHER HEAVY commercial truck manufacturers, Daimler Truck is developing trucks that can utilise hydrogen for power. Since last year, a Mercedes-Benz GenH2 Truck fuel-cell prototype has been undergoing testing, and the company is now putting another prototype into operation to test the use of liquid hydrogen. Daimler Truck says it prefers liquid hydrogen in the development of hydrogen-based drives. In this state, the company says it has a significantly higher energy density in relation to volume compared to gaseous hydrogen. As a result, more hydrogen can be carried, which significantly increases the range and enables comparable performance of the vehicle with that of a conventional diesel truck.

During the refuelling process, cryogenic liquid hydrogen at minus 253 degrees Celsius is filled into two 40 kg tanks mounted on either side of the chassis. The development objective of the GenH2 Truck is a range of up to 1,000 kilometres and more, and Daimler says that series production for hydrogen-based trucks is planned for the second half of the decade.

CATL LAUNCHES ‘QILIN’ BATTERY OFFERING ‘1000KM IN A BREEZE’

HINESE EV BATTERY maker CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd.) has launched a new generation of its CTP (cell-to-pack) technology with the company claiming its Qilin battery carries plenty of energy thanks to ‘breakthroughs in the core process, algorithm and materials’. It does, CATL says, deliver a volume utilisation efficiency of 72 per cent, an energy density of up to 255 Wh/ kg, and is capable of delivering ‘a range of over 1,000km in a breeze.’ CATL adds that the construction of the battery improves the battery reliability throughout its life cycle, and liquid cooling that runs between adjacent cells increases the heat transfer area by four times, cuts thermal control time in half, and supports a hot start in 5 minutes and fast charging in 10 minutes.

It also enables the cell to cool down rapidly in extreme circumstances, effectively preventing abnormal thermal conduction among cells. Qilin batteries are expected to be mass produced and come on the market in 2023.

CHARGEFOX NETWORK ACQUIRED BY STATE MOTORING CLUBS THROUGH AMS AUSTRALIAN EV CHARGING network Chargefox has been acquired by Australian Motoring Services (AMS), a company wholly owned by motoring clubs the NRMA, RACV, RACQ, RAC, RAA and RACT. AMS was already a backer of Chargefox. Chargefox, which was founded in 2017 and has built a network of hundreds of EV recharge sites, has plans to have more than 5,000 EV plugs nationally by the end of 2025. “We are proud to play a role in supporting Chargefox’s growth. We share a mutual goal to reduce road

transport emissions to zero and support the growing community of EV drivers across the country,” said Michael Reed, AMS, Group CEO, in a statement. “We continue to see a large number of EV’s on the road and the number of Australians who are considering purchasing an EV in the future is growing year on year. “Combined, we’ll have greater power and opportunity to deliver infrastructure that Australians need to increase the uptake of EVs and therefore reduce road transport emissions.” July 2022 Motor Trader | 45

ICONIC GT40 REBORN AS ELECTRIC SUPERCAR

T

HE LEGENDARY FORD GT40 is getting an electric makeover thanks to British company Everrati, a specialist in the electrification of iconic classic cars. The company says it will use a proprietary state-of-the-art EV powertrain generating up to 597kW and 800Nm of torque, with twin high-performance Integral Powertrain electric motors that supply drive to the car’s rear axle. A 60kWh battery integrated into a 700-volt electrical system can be charged from 20 to 80 per cent via an 80kW CCS fast charger in 45 minutes and provide a range in excess of 200km. Advanced liquid-cooling and thermal and safety management systems will support high-performance use on both road and track.

says, get to 60mph (96.5km/h) in under four seconds. EVs don’t, obviously, have the engaging roar of an engine, but Everatti will get around that for the GT40. Using something called ‘Race Mode’ twin active sound generators are activataed which deliver up to 110db of augmented V8 exhaust sound. The gear shifter – normally used to select drive, reverse or neutral – also enables the driver to select virtual gears, with each shift synchronised to the sound generators and torque delivery giving a corresponding momentary ‘pause’ in acceleration to ensure driver engagement that invokes the experience of driving a car with a conventional transmission. The car’s motorsportderived user display interface provides the driver with live data on the performance and condition of the powertrain. With the driver’s permission, an on-board 4G data-logger enables remote access to Everrati engineers for diagnostic purposes. It was announced last year that Everatti would form a strategic partnership with US-based company Superformance – a manufacturer of 1960s-era continuation sports cars who produce a rolling chassis for the GT40 built under license – to develop the EV GT40. The link-up means the Everrati is listed in the official Shelby Registry.

Y THE MID-1980S, Lamborghini had become well established as the maker of brilliant, eye-catching sports cars. Since the launch of its first car, the 350 GT, in 1964, the Italian company had rattled off a series of wonderful V8 and V12 powered models including the stunning Miura, the Espada, the Urraco, the Jalpa and, of course, the iconic Countach. These cars had cemented its sporty reputation, and if you wanted something fast and powerful that most definitely looked like it was fast and powerful, then Lamborghini could deliver.

A POWERFUL, LUXURY OFF-ROADER, THE LM002 FIRST DEBUTED AT THE BRUSSELS AUTO SHOW IN 1986 AND WAS THE RESULT OF YEARS OF STOPSTART DEVELOPMENT ON WHAT WAS ORIGINALLY PLANNED AS A MILITARY ALL-TERRAIN VEHICLE. It was probably something of a surprise then, when the company behind such legendary sports cars popped up with this - the big, brutish LM002. A powerful, luxury off-roader, the LM002 first debuted at the Brussels Auto Show in 1986 and was the result of years of stopstart development on what was originally planned as a military all-terrain vehicle. It started life as a prototype, dubbed


the Cheetah, that appeared in the late 1970s. A fibreglassbodied, off-roader with a 5.9-litre Chrysler engine stuffed in the back, the Cheetah would be developed further and be offered to the US military as part of its High Mobility Multi-Purpose Vehicle Lamborghini Cheetah prototype program. It would not be selected, losing out to the ubiquitous Humvee. and shifting the engine up to the front Lamborghini put the off-roader project and by 1986, the production version on the backburner for a while, but was just about ready to go. now had the 335kW/500Nm, 5.2-litre V12 engine from the Countach Quattrovalvole model under its bonnet. This metallic muscle meant it could reach over 210km/h and skip to 100km/h in a touch under 8 seconds. Not bad at all. It also had specially developed runflat Pirelli Scorpion tyres, disc brakes up front and drums at the rear, independent suspension, transfer case and three selflocking diffs. Its military DNA ensured it was plenty capable for any off-road scrape and adventures. Of course, by its 1986 reveal, it had now become a vehicle for discerning Lamborghini enthusiasts, and the utilitarian nature of its military beginnings was replaced by a luxurious, leather-bound interior with all the trimmings a luxury car owner might expect.

BIG, POWERFUL, THIRSTY, AND EXPENSIVE, THE LM002 DID NOT SELL IN HUGE NUMBERS, WITH AROUND 300 FINDING THEIR WAY TO OWNERS DURING ITS SEVEN-YEAR PRODUCTION LIFE THROUGH TO 1993. Big, powerful, thirsty, and expensive, the LM002 did not sell in huge numbers, with around 300 finding their way to owners during its seven-year production life through to 1993. It would be 25 years before Lamborghini would produce another


4WD SUV – the Urus – and in a sign of the times (and a reflection of today’s market), it took just four years from its market debut for the Urus to become Lamborghini’s best-ever selling model with

more than 20,000 models sold. The Urus is, of course, a lovely car. Powerful, quick, and luxurious, it would be a fine addition to anyone’s garage. But it ain’t the Rambo Lambo.

RAM 1500 TRX SUPER PICK-UP RUMBLES INTO AUSTRALIA

HE RAM TRX, a monster pick-up truck packing a whopping punch, has arrived in Australia, and it is packed to the gills with tech goodies, luxury trimmings, and a supercharged engine that gives it some truly jaw-dropping power. The 6.2-litre V8 HEMI under the aggressive-looking, scooped bonnet, delivers 523kW and 882Nm, giving the TRX a 0-100km/h time of 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 190km/h. Those are suitably impressive numbers for a truck that looks like it would like to eat every other vehicle on the road for breakfast. TOYOTA TO UPGRADE HILUX RANGE

OYOTA AUSTRALIA HAS announced a performance and capability upgrade for the HiLux Rogue 4x4 flagship pick-up, which will be receive a wider track and updated suspension package. The track will increase approximately 140mm in the front and rear, while the vehicle's ride height has also been increased by approximately 20mm. Both changes are aimed at improving off-road ability and on-road performance. Toyota says its engineers overhauled the Toyota HiLux Rogue 4x4 HiLux suspension by extending the front suspension arm and front stabiliser bar length and adjusting shock absorber angle to improve efficiency. At the rear, axle length has been extended, dampers have been moved further out towards the wheels, and a rear stabiliser bar has been installed. HE NEW HAVAL H6 GT range has begun arriving in Australia. The sportier, premium, GT range will consist of two grades: the H6 GT Lux (2WD) and the H6 GT Ultra (4WD). Built on the same platform that also underpins the regular Haval H6 and the Jolion, the new H6 GT is powered by a 2-litre petrol engine that delivers 150kW of power and 320Nm of torque and is mated to a 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission and an active exhaust booster. BMW M3 TOURING TO DEBUT IN AUSTRALIA IN 2023

B

MW AUSTRALIA WILL introduce the first-ever BMW M3 Touring to the local market in the first quarter of next year. The Touring will be offered in one spec only - the Competition specification – with power coming from a 375kW/650Nm, 3-litre six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology. That will make the wagon pretty potent, with 100 km/h reached in just 3.6 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h, but that can be bumped to 280km/h with the optional M Driver’s Package. The engine is paired with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which combines with the Active M Differential at the rear axle. A Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system includes wheel slip limitation integrated into the engine control unit, while M Dynamic Mode and M Traction Control are fitted as standard. Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled shock absorbers and M Servotronic steering with a variable ratio come as standard. Optional M Carbon ceramic brakes can be ordered as an alternative to the already standard M Compound braking system. Forged M light-alloy wheels in 19-inch for the front and 20-inch for the rear are fitted as standard and can be specified with track tyres as an option. On the inside, the BMW Curved Display is fitted as standard. The fully digital

screen grouping is made up of a 12.3inch information display and a 14.9-inch Control Display. It is positioned behind a single glass surface and angled towards the driver. The information display behind the steering wheel presents all relevant driving information with new M-specific style graphics. M-specific widgets with information on the car set-up and tyre condition can be shown on the Control Display’s home screen. A BMW Head-Up Display with M-specific content will also be available. An M-specific control/operation system provides direct access to settings and options for the engine, chassis, steering, braking system and M xDrive. Two overall vehicle set-ups can be stored and called up using the M buttons on the steering wheel. As well as M Traction Control, M Drive Professional also offers the M Drift Analyser and the M Lap timer. The M Mode button on the centre console can be used to adjust the responses of the driver assistance systems and the content shown in the information display and Head-Up Display. Drivers can also choose from the ROAD, SPORT and TRACK settings. Electrically adjustable M Sport seats with memory function and seat heating plus Merino leather trim come as standard but M Carbon bucket seats are an option. TOYOTA REPLACE V6 WITH TURBO FOUR IN NEW KLUGER SUV

OYOTA’S LARGE SUV, the Kluger, will arrive in Australia in the first quarter of next year with a new powertrain option – a 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The new powertrain will produce approximately 198kW of power and 420Nm of torque and will replace the 3.5-litre petrol V6 powertrain in the Kluger line-up. There will be a choice of front- and allwheel-drive, with power to be channelled through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The turbo unit will be available across the range in GX, GXL and Grande trim, and will be offered alongside the Hybrid AWD grades. The Kluger will also gain a number of connectivity and safety updates. All variants will be offered with Toyota Connected Services, enabled through an in-built data communication module (DCM) that can offer safety features including automatic collision notification,

A 7-inch colour multi-information display replaces the 4.2-inch display on GX, while GXL and up moves from an 8-inch multimedia display to a 12.3-inch touchscreen. VOLKSWAGEN UNVEILS ID. AERO FULLY ELECTRIC SEDAN

OLKSWAGEN HAS REVEALED the ID. Aero concept – a preview of the brand’s first fully electric sedan. Unveiled in China, the new model is to be positioned in the premium mid-size sedan segment and the production version for China is expected to go on sale in the second half of 2023. The ID. Aero is built on VW’s modular electric drive matrix (MEB). A 77kWh battery pack supplies the energy and VW says the sedan will have a range of up to 620km. While other details are not yet available, VW did reveal an ID. electric

sedan concept in 2018 called the Vizzion that boasted dual electric motors. The Aero is planned to be built from VW's joint ventures with China’s FAW and SAIC car manufacturers and it is also designed to reflect that market’s interest in high-tech, connected EVs. With that in mind, the Aero will come fully packed with all the tech that VW can throw at it, and the company has bundled all this under a new label - IQ Technologies - that will represent the company’s most advanced and competitive features.


Jeep Gladiator As the new flagship model of the ID. family, it is intended for the Aero to be offered globally in future – with the North American market as well as Europe in the plans. Production in Europe is scheduled for 2023. Presumably, Australia is in VW's plan somewhere too. The Aero will become the sixth member of VW’s ID. Electric range of vehicles following the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 and ID.6 as well as the ID. Buzz kombi.

JEEP GLADIATOR GETS NEW ACCESSORY OPTIONS A NEW RANGE of accessories are now available for the Jeep Gladiator and are available to order via Jeep Dealerships across the country. Options range from a Soft Tonneau cover and Sports Bar set-up through to a fully electric RollTrac unit. The Soft Tonneau cover offers adjustable tension and a bungee system for transporting bulky loads and can be fitted in combination with a Sports Bar finished in a matt black powder coat. The Sports Bar can, in turn, be used to fit other accessories such as light bars or antennas. Also available is the electrically operated Gladiator RollTrac cover. Comprised of aluminium slats that are powder coated in black, the RollTrac can be opened, closed or paused at the push of a button from either side of the rear corners of the cargo box. There’s a separate lockable stowage box located at the front of the RollTrac unit to further enhance security of valuables when travelling. MAHINDRA TO INTRODUCE SCORPIO-N TO AUSTRALIA IN 2023

NDIAN CARMAKER MAHINDRA has unveiled the Scorpio-N - a big, 4WD 7-seater SUV that will be available in the Australian market next year. The Scorpio-N is, Mahindra says, a completely new ground-up build, and a successor to the mid-size SUV which carries the Scorpio name and which has been around for 20 years. The new Scorpio-N is built on a new body-on-frame platform, and in India will be available in five variants, with power coming from one of two engine choices – a 2-litre, 149kW/380Nm turbo petrol engine or a 2.2-litre, 128.6kW/370Nm diesel – with manual or auto transmission available along with two and four-wheel drive. Features vary across the variants with diesel models getting the 4XPLOR terrain

management tech, and range-topping models getting all the tasty features such as premium trim and connected car infotainment functionality. Available are three on-road drive modes and four for off-road work. There’s a Pentalink suspension with Watt’s linkage at the rear and double-wishbone up front, and frequency-selective dampers. Disc brakes are all round and 17-inch or 18-inch wheels are available. The Scorpio-N appearance is rugged and modern, and the interior is sophisticated with a nice design and materials. In top trim variants, there's an 8-inch infotainment screen that gives access to a system powered by AdrenoX cockpit technology which will come with more than 70 apps, including Android Auto


Mahindra Scorpio-N and Apple Car Play, GPS, Bluetooth, and Amazon Alexa functionality. Mahindra says it has partnered with a who’s who of tech firms – including Qualcomm, Bosch, Sony and Amazon – to deliver the connected set-up. Wireless charging for smartphones, dual-zone climate control, reversing camera, and USB ports also figure in the fit-out. Safety features include Hill Hold and

Hill Descent Control; parking sensors front and rear; front, side and curtain airbags; driver drowsiness monitoring, and tyre pressure monitoring. Mahindra says it intends to launch the Scorpio-N in Australia in 2023. The company's retail network includes 49 outlets across six states. Australian specification and pricing will be announced closer to launch.

NEW, MORE POWERFUL, HIGH-TECH MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV TO ARRIVE IN AUGUST

HE NEW GENERATION Outlander Plug-In Hybrid EV (PHEV) is set to arrive in Australian dealerships from mid-August. Available in 5 and 5+2 seat configurations, the Outlander PHEV range covers four variants starting with an entrylevel ES grade, and progressing through Aspire, Exceed and Exceed Tourer models. Power and energy are delivered via a new-generation 20kWh lithium-ion battery pack, twin electric motors, and a revised, specifically tuned, Atkinson cycle 2.4-litre engine. Mitsubishi claims up to 84km of pure electric driving range, with combined cycle fuel consumption of 1.5L/100km. The electric motors, located front

The rear motor features a new, integrated motor control unit occupying a smaller space than before, enabling the new PHEV to offer a three-row seating configuration for the first time (on Exceed and Exceed Tourer). The 20kWh battery pack is a substantial increase over the previous model's 13.8kWh set-up. A reinforced differential employs a thicker carrier and stronger shaft and pinion, allowing the new Outlander PHEV to turn up its regenerative braking capability. There are six adjustable regeneration levels, capable of being set by the driver. The Outlander PHEV supports multiple charging modes. There’s an AC connector that supports Mode 2 (standard 240V AC) and Mode 3 ( fast 240V AC, with dedicated Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE)) charging, plus a CHAdeMO port that enables Mode 4 DC rapid charging. Mode 2 and Mode 3 charging cables come as standard equipment across the range. The Outlander PHEV also comes with Mitsubishi’s Dendo Drive House bi-directional charging system. Accessed via the vehicle’s CHAdeMO charging port, the system allows the energy stored in the 20kWh drive battery to be discharged back into the grid (Vehicle-to-Grid) or to power a home or other property (Vehicle-toHome) not connected to the grid. In Aspire and above, there are also two on-board 1500W, 240V AC three-pin

power points that provide Vehicle-toLoad capability, drawing electricity from the vehicle’s battery to power a range of camping equipment or domestic appliances. Technology and safety features are comprehensive with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto feature as well as Qi wireless smartphone charging on Aspire grade and above. A 9-inch central infotainment touchscreen is standard across the range and all models feature a 12.3-inch full colour digital instrument cluster offering multiple display options and extended PHEV-specific options such as energy flow meter, kWh consumption information and total EV driving time calculator. Aspire models and above get a 10.8-inch full-colour windscreen projection Head Up Display. The PHEV’s suite of safety features include, as standard, Forward Collision Mitigation system with pedestrian and cyclist detection; Predictive Forward Collision Mitigation; Emergency Lane Assist; Lane Departure Prevention; Lane Departure Warning; Blind Spot Warning; Traffic Sign Recognition; and Driver Attention Alert.

KIA’S NEW NIRO LANDS IN AUSTRALIAN DEALERSHIPS

T

HE NEW KIA Niro has arrived in the company’s Australian dealerships with the crossover SUV available in entry-level S or flagship GT-Line trims and sporting either a Hybrid Electric (HEV) or fully electric (EV) powertrain. The HEV features the 4-cylinder Smartstream 1.6-litre petrol engine paired to the second-generation 6-speed dualclutch automatic transmission (6DCT). Together with a 32kW permanent magnet synchronous electric motor and 1.56kWh battery, a combined maximum power output of 104kW and 265Nm of torque is produced. Kia claims combined fuel consumption of four litres per 100km. The EV variant of the new Niro gets a 64.8kWh battery pack that is paired with a motor up the front delivering 150kW and 255Nm. Hyundai claims a single charge driving range of 460km. Charging the EV’s battery from 10-80 per cent takes 43 minutes with a suitable DC rapid charger. The Niro comes with a standard CCS2 charging port. Regenerative braking enables drivers to choose from a series of regeneration levels with the system able to calculate the amount required using radar and road gradient information. Kia says the new Niro has undergone an extensive local ride and handling program to ensure it is suitable for Australia’s road conditions and driving styles. There’s a new electronic dialtype shift lever in the GT-Line variants, as is a wireless Qi charging pad. Across the range, the front seats incorporate USBC charging. NEW VEHICLE MARKET REMAINS AFFECTED BY SUPPLY CONSTRAINTS

A

TOTAL OF 99,974 vehicles were sold in June 2022, according to figures released at the beginning of July by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI). This result represents a decrease of 9.7 per cent on the same month in 2021. Year-to-date, sales are at 537,858. Sales across every State and Territory were down in June apart from the Northern Territory where 1,115 vehicles were sold representing an increase of 16.3 per cent on June 2021. Sales in Queensland were down 13.2 per cent to 21,983, while the Australian Capital Territory fell 11.6 per cent (1,486); New South Wales 7.5 per cent (32,027); South Australia 8.6 per cent (6,214); Tasmania 17.2 per cent (1,572); Victoria 12.2 per cent (25,764); and Western Australia 2.2 per cent (9,813). Toyota led the market with a total of 22,561 vehicles sold. Kia was next with 8,480 followed by Hyundai (8,259), Mazda (6,245) and Mitsubishi (5,846). The Toyota Hi-Lux was the highest selling model with 7,582. Hyundai’s Tucson was next with 2,840 followed by Ford’s Ranger (2,802); Toyota’s Landcruiser (2,783); and Toyota’s Corolla (2,605). The Passenger Vehicle Market was down by 4,911 vehicle sales (-21.0%) over June 2021; the Sports Utility Market fell by 1,254 vehicle sales (-2.3%); and the Light Commercial Market by 4,698 vehicle sales (-16.5%). “WHILE DEMAND FOR NEW CARS REMAINS STRONG IN AUSTRALIA, IT IS UNLIKELY WE WILL SEE SUPPLY CHAIN ISSUES RESOLVE IN THE NEAR FUTURE. Commercial Vehicle Market was up by 173 vehicle sales (3.5%) versus June 2021. Electric vehicles (EV) continued their strong growth with 1,137 sold in June this year against 526 last June. Hybrids performed strongly too, with 6,407 sales recorded this June against 5,842 in 2021. FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic continues to hamper automotive manufacturing. This, combined with the war in Ukraine and shipping issues means that the supply of new vehicles hitting Australia’s shores cannot keep up with demand. “Globally, car makers are continuing to suffer from plant shutdowns. In Europe we have component supply heavily impacted by the conflict in Ukraine. Microprocessors continue to be in short supply and global shipping remains unpredictable. “While demand for new cars remains strong in Australia, it is unlikely we will see supply chain issues resolve in the near future,” Mr Weber said.

TATISTICALLY, YOUNG PEOPLE identify as being the victims of cyberbullying. Businesses may also find an adverse comment that is arguably unwarranted on their social media pages. The answer is to call it out. Cyberbullying is bullying that is done through the use of technology. For example, using the Internet, a mobile phone or a camera to hurt or embarrass someone is considered cyberbullying. If you are being bullied and need support, tell someone and get help. You can find a number of helpful services by clicking HERE. If you know or see someone being bullied, the Supportive Bystander Fact Sheet shows how to help. A cyberbully can be someone you know, or a stranger. They might send mean or hurtful text messages through social networking sites like Facebook or Twitter, or through sites where people can ask/ answer questions. Cyberbullying can also involve people sending photos and videos to try to embarrass or hurt others,

Employers and business owners should have clear and appropriate social media policy where all employees understand their obligations when they comment or post photos on social media. With freedom of speech comes a legal and practical imperative to not harm the employer, along with being socially responsible, even if no harm was intended. ITH THE AUTOMOTIVE industry continuing to suffer from skill shortages, a new survey of automotive apprentices has been completed that reveals key information for stakeholders to assess and make changes required to improve skill development, career pathways and job opportunities. MTA Queensland, together with the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA) and the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA) commissioned ACA Research to run the survey. AUTO READY PROGRAM TAKES TO THE ROAD

M

TA QUEENSLAND AND the MTA Institute have long recognised the importance of giving young people the opportunity to get a basic introduction to the automotive industry. Over the years, the two organisations have run many courses for school students and the current Auto Ready program has proved to be extremely popular. Held over five days during school holidays, the course enables students to get a taste of workshop life, working with the MTA Institute’s experienced trainers and learning a range of tasks including how to use and maintain tools and equipment, and identifying electrical and mechanical systems and components. Up to this year, Auto Ready has been delivered at MTA Queensland’s facility in Brisbane, but July saw two editions of the course being held across the two weeks

of school holidays at Rockhampton’s Glenmore State High School. With the school’s trade training facility already fitted with some automotive tooling, and with MTA Queensland bringing along its mobile workshop - a truck fully stocked with equipment and educational material - the 17 students who participated across the two weeks were well equipped for their first dive into an automotive workshop environment. The courses were delivered by Lloyd Cross, the MTA Institute’s trainer for the Rockhampton region, and Scott Gehrke, the Institute’s Operations Manager. It was, said Scott, a very successful couple of weeks, with enthusiasm high amongst the young participants, and their development smooth and swift. “Seeing the progress of the students is always very satisfying,” he said. “From learning to use tools correctly to having confidence in completing tasks in front of their peers, all the students showed real improvement in skills and confidence across the week. “On the final day we had some competitions around changing wheels and removing and replacing engine components off engines and that really showed how much they improved, how


industry,” she said. “It was fun learning about some of the things that are done in this career, and I now know I would like to do it.” For 16-year-old Glenmore SHS student Angellus Burlinson, who is already taking an automotive course at school, the Auto Ready program confirmed his thinking that a career in the industry might be one to consider too. It was, he said, a fun experience. “Theory was actually fun! I didn't think it would be,” he said. “I liked the Jordan Arthy interesting videos and the passion of the teachers – they made it fun. It was very informative, lots of fun, and gave a good perspective of the automotive industry.” The MTA Institute plans to deliver the Auto Ready program to other regional areas and there has, said Scott, been interest from other locations and schools. AST MONTH, BUICK - which along with Cadillac, is one of General Motors’ premium brands –unveiled this, the Wildcat EV concept. And it is a glorious thing - a stunningly good-looking 2+2 coupe that introduces a new styling direction for Buick. The brand has given the car the Wildcat name that it used for a series of striking concept cars during the 1950s and 1980s, and this newest effort certainly lives up to the standards set by its predecessors. There’s a low, wide stance and forwardleaning front-end appearance that features a low-mounted, trapezoidal grille. The aggressive look is aided by microLED lighting technology and thin-beam projector lenses for the front lighting, 92 | Motor Trader July 2022


a windscreen that seems to flow into the side glass, and blade-style taillights at the rear. Jet-age inspired 18-spoke ‘turbine’ wheels add to the Wildcat’s muscular look and there’s new Buick tri-shield badging too.

There’s a unique design to the doors, with a semi-swing set-up meaning a portion of the roof lifts as the doors open. Very cool. The interior, as you might expect, is pretty futuristic. A prominent ‘floating’ console with a touchscreen display July 2022 Motor Trader | 93


extends from the base of the instrument panel to the rear seating area, and there’s plenty of brushed and polished aluminium for the trim, cockpit-style seats with cantilevered headrests, and a sweeping touchscreen along the dash. The Wildcat EV concept is built, Buick says, to be a platform for futuristic features such as artificial intelligence, biometrics and aromatherapy, and the technology is designed to adapt to its user and make suggestions on a variety of features from infotainment to comfort to vehicle functions. For example, there’s a Zen Mode, that can, Buick says, detect an elevation in a driver's heart rate and automatically adjust vehicle settings to 94 | Motor Trader July 2022

calm them down. It does so by dimming the cabin lights, adjusting sound settings, dispersing calming aromatherapy scents, and activating massaging seats. As a concept, the Wildcat EV is unlikely to make it to the road as seen here – it is pretty much a styling and design exercise – and there’s no information about what is powering the car (although as Buick is part of GM, it would presumably be some version of the company’s Ultium platform). However, Buick has announced it will be a fully electric brand by the end of the decade (see page 43) so there’s a chance that plenty of the Wildcat EV styling may make it into some future model. Let’s hope so, because it is a beauty.
