From the Editor

HELLO AND WELCOME

to the May edition of Motor Trader.

The electrification of the automotive industry and rise of battery power has been the defining development of the past few years. However, another piece of technology could well become similarly transformative. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been part of the industry for years, enabling, amongst many other functions, those ADAS features now deemed so important.

However, in the past couple of years, AI has seen remarkable advances - think ChatGPT - and that has seen the possibilities for new and transformative technological developments across the automotive industry (all industries really), not least of which is robotics.

In this edition of Motor Trader, we take a look at the status of AI in our industry and what developments may be just around the corner.

We also have look at some of the news coming out of the Auto China show held in Beijing last month, and have our regular features and news.

I hope you enjoy this month's edition, and if you have any news to share, please contact me.

Cheers

From the Desk of Management

IN LATE APRIL, I had the tremendous pleasure of participating in the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA) and China Automotive Dealers Association (CADA) Study Tour to the Auto China Show 2024 in Beijing, China. The tour provided a fantastic opportunity to observe the very latest in electric vehicle (EV) technology and products coming out of the world’s largest EV market.

CURRENTLY, 60 PER CENT OF GLOBAL EV SALES OCCUR IN CHINA, AND LOOKING AT SOME OF THE TECHNOLOGY ON DISPLAY, IT’S NOT HARD TO SEE WHY. BRANDS THAT WE ARE YET TO SEE IN AUSTRALIA, SUCH AS ZEEKR, XIAOMI, AND LEAPMOTOR, ARE GROWING

RAPIDLY, BRINGING INNOVATIVE NEW TECHNOLOGY AND APPROACHES TO THE INDUSTRY.

Currently, 60 per cent of global EV sales occur in China, and looking at some of the technology on display, it’s not hard to see why. Brands that we are yet to see in Australia, such as Zeekr, Xiaomi, and Leapmotor, are growing rapidly, bringing innovative new technology and approaches to the industry. It was fascinating to witness the potential future of our industry in real time, and it was an eye-opening reminder that we need to be prepared for a different future.

With the introduction of the Australian Government’s National Vehicle Emissions Standard, it can be expected that we will be seeing a lot more of these EVs manufactured in China hitting our roads.

I encourage members to advance their planning on how to train their workers and invest in the infrastructure and equipment required to service and repair EVs. MTA Queensland is here to help you navigate your path forward, and I remind you all that you can reach out no matter the direction you choose to follow.

It is better to be prepared than the alternative.

WITH OUR MEMBERS performing ongoing vital roles in communities across all areas of Queensland, we understand the importance of bringing opportunities to engage directly to them. We have long focused on delivering increased engagement and discussion sessions with members in all regions, and I am excited to announce that we will be hosting a number of exciting events in the coming months.

Next month, we will be travelling to Toowoomba to exhibit at Farm Fest. This three-day event, from 4th – 6th June, is Queensland’s largest commercial agricultural business event, and we can’t wait to catch up with our Farm and Industrial

Machinery members, and all others who will be in attendance. In other exciting news, MTA Queensland will be coming to Townsville in July for the NTI Townsville 500 Supercars event, hosting an exclusive President’s Breakfast on the morning of Friday, 5th July. This will be the first event of its kind that we have hosted and is a fantastic opportunity for members across North Queensland to come together to catch up and enjoy a wonderful morning before a day at the racetrack. Stay tuned, as more information and tickets will be released to the public from next week!

We also have our next two Auto Women Socials fast approaching; in Brisbane on 8th June, and then in Cairns on 11th July. The Auto Women Social has proven to be an incredibly enjoyable evening for all who have attended so far in Townsville and Mackay and is a great way to connect with fellow women in automotive in your local area to catch up. Tickets are available now, and I look forward to seeing you there!

Celebrating 45 years in business, the team at Williams Auto Electrician are going from strength to strength.

Motor Trader caught up with Managing Director Jamie Wilesmith to learn more about how their business has stayed strong for nearly half a century.

WORDS & IMAGES : LARA WILDE

TELL US ABOUT THE PRODUCTS AND SERVICES

YOU OFFER AT WILLIAMS AUTO ELECTRICIAN?

JW: We are locals who have been looking after locals in Cairns for over 45 years. We are a trusted family owned and operated business. At Williams Auto

Electrician we specialise in auto electrical repair and auxiliary system fit outs. We are a part of the REDARC family. We also specialise in air conditioning repairs on all automotive air conditioning systems from light vehicles to industrial equipment.

6 | Motor Trader May 2024
Jamie Wilesmith, Managing Director, Williams Auto Electrician

WHEN WAS WILLIAMS AUTO ELECTRICIAN ESTABLISHED?

JW: Williams Auto Electrician has been operating in Cairns for over 45 years. Don and Aileen bought JT Williams Auto Electrics from Jumbo in 1979 when he passed away. They quickly dropped the JT from the name and built the workshop up. I purchased the business from them in 2019. Don and Aileen are still hands-on in the business today. Aileen manages the administration and accounts of the business, while Don comes in once a week to work on special projects like rebuilding alternators.

WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND IN THE INDUSTRY?

JW: When I was a kid, just 10 years old or even younger, I started in the industry helping out around the workshop and then later worked during school holidays and after school. I enjoyed the work and learned everything I could. I became an apprentice in January 2000, completing my trade and getting hands on with tools under Don’s guidance.

“WE ARE LOCALS WHO HAVE BEEN LOOKING AFTER LOCALS IN CAIRNS FOR OVER 45 YEARS. WE ARE A TRUSTED FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED BUSINESS.”

ARE YOU STILL HANDS ON IN THE BUSINESS TODAY?

JW: Yes, although these days I am in the office more than on the tools. I still enjoy learning new skills, teaching staff and being hands on in the workshop. By being in the workshop and the office I can keep across all of the business and look after our staff and our customers.

WHO IS IN YOUR CURRENT TEAM?

JW: I am really proud of the team we have in place now. It is a great mix of experienced tradesmen and passionate

staff who want to learn. I currently employ one workshop foreman, Junior; three tradesmen, Don, Ian, and myself; and three apprentices, Nathan, Mason, and Theo. We also have one service advisor, Bel; one administration clerk, Katrina; and two interlock staff, Aileen, and Andy.

WHAT TRAINING DO YOU DO WITH STAFF?

JW: Training and learning are very important to our business. We attend wire and gas training every two years. I like staff to undertake whatever local training is available. I also encourage my administration staff in the office to upgrade their skillset with online programs for excel and other computer programs that will benefit the running of the business.

WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE GREATEST ADVANCEMENT IN TECHNOLOGY FOR YOUR BUSINESS?

JW: Having apps and tech information available online at the touch of a screen is invaluable to us these days.

DO YOU CONSIDER THAT THE ADVANCEMENTS IN ELECTRIC VEHICLES WILL HAVE AN IMPACT ON YOUR BUSINESS?

“I AM REALLY PROUD OF THE TEAM WE HAVE IN PLACE NOW. IT IS A GREAT MIX OF EXPERIENCED TRADESMEN AND PASSIONATE STAFF WHO WANT TO LEARN.”

JW: It will have a massive impact, not only on training staff but equipment costs in the workshop and repair costs to customers. We are keeping our staff up to date with their training as much as possible, but we constantly need to upgrade our skills and equipment in the workshop.

DO YOU SPONSOR ANY LOCAL COMMUNITY GROUPS AS A PART OF YOUR MARKETING STRATEGY?

JW: Williams Auto Electricians currently sponsors my daughter’s dance school, Dancescapes, as well as one of the local Golf Clubs, a local Rugby Union Club, and the Cairns Model Aero Club. Our sponsorships are not really for marketing purposes but more about us givingback to the community. For our marketing, we

advertise heavily on television which works wonders for sales to drive cash flow.

HOW MUCH IMPORTANCE DO YOU PLACE ON SOCIAL MEDIA FOR YOUR BUSINESS?

JW: Right now, for my business I don’t have any social media. TV advertising is working great to generate business with new customers and repeat customers.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNG YOU STARTING OUT IN THE INDUSTRY?

JW: Be patient as experience in this industry is what makes a good tradesman. You need to spend the time learning and practicing. It won’t happen overnight, but it will happen.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A MEMBER OF MTA QUEENSLAND?

The Williams Auto Electrician team: Aileen, Bel, Nathan, Maison, Ian, Junior and Jamie

JW: We have been a member for five years, signing up when I first bought the business in 2019.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE GREATEST BENEFIT OF YOUR MTAQ MEMBERSHIP?

JW: Having a direct contact to someone that understands the legalities for an owner when odd things pop up. For example, understanding employees’ rights and customers’ rights for fair trading.

WHAT ARE YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGES?

JW: Navigating being a business owner rather than an employee who is just another one of the boys on floor. I also put a lot of energy into maintaining a family and business balance.

WHAT VEHICLES DO YOU OWN?

JW: My wife drives a Hyundai Palisade and I drive a Mitsubishi Triton. We also have a 1977 Allan Moffat XC Falcon in our shed that we drive on Sundays. The XC is certified number 266 of 500 and completely original.

DO YOU OR YOUR STAFF ACTIVELY COMPETE IN MOTORSPORT?

JW: Not at the moment. My workshop foreman, Junior, did race in the tarmac circuit and travelled and raced the

TARGA Tasmania for three years. He is now a part of the Cairns Model Aero Club and flies planes.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE BUSINESS OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS?

JW: The plan is to consolidate and upskill the staff that I have so that I will be able to have a little bit more free time. By freeing up my time I will be able to spend more time working on the business rather than on the tools and gain some more time with my family.

WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR SPARE TIME?

JW: When I have spare time, I like to play golf and spend time with my family.

WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL GOALS FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS?

JW: To become a better golfer! My current handicap is 16 but I would like to get to single digits.

GOVERNMENT RESPONDS TO FRANCHISING CODE OF CONDUCT REVIEW

AT THE BEGINNING of May, the Australian Government released its response to the Independent Review of the Franchising Code of Conduct.

The Review, released earlier this year and conducted by Dr Michael Schaper, had made 23 recommendations regarding the Franchising Code of Conduct, and the Government has agreed, or agreed in principle, to all of them.

These include recommendations that service and repair work conducted by dealers should be captured by the Code; that the existing requirement that new

vehicle dealership agreements must provide a reasonable opportunity to make a return on investment should be extended to all franchise agreements; and that the existing requirement that new vehicle dealership agreements must include provisions for compensation for franchisees in the event of early termination should be extended to all franchise agreements.

A licensing scheme is also to be considered, with the Government saying it will establish a taskforce to investigate the introduction of such a regime for the franchising sector to ‘better regulate most aspects of the franchisee-franchisor relationship.’

In addition, the Government says small businesses, including franchisees, will benefit from the expansion of the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman’s dispute resolution service. The aim here is to provide support to small businesses that are navigating disputes, including by

improving access to low-cost legal advice.

“I have heard the challenges in the franchising sector, particularly in relation to imbalances of power between franchisors and franchisees, which is why our response is targeted at improving partnerships in the sector,” said Minister for Small Business, The Hon Julie Collins MP. “We want a fair playing field for the sector, which is better for everyone, and this is what our response delivers.”

In response to the Government’s announcement, the Motor Trades Association of Australia, of which MTA Queensland is a member, was welcoming but noted there was still work to be done to ensure the Franchising Code is ‘fit for purpose’ as the industry continues its rapid evolution.

In a media release, the organisation said it was happy to see the inclusion of other classes of automotive retailers beyond car dealers, such as motorcycle, truck, farm, and industrial machinery dealers. It also said that given the evolution of the industry - including the shift to EVs and new business models emerging - it recommended a standalone code of conduct for the

automotive retail sector.

“MTAA has been calling on the Government to address franchisor opportunism in the automotive retail sector for many years and we are pleased their endorsement of Dr Schaper’s recommendations will go some way to address the imbalance between automotive manufacturers and dealers,” said Matt Hobbs, MTAA CEO.

“We continue to believe that an independent code is a necessary step, particularly to drive greater competitiveness, sustainability, and productivity in the sector as it undergoes the biggest transformation in its history with the advent of EVs.”

LONGREACH MAIL DELIVERY GOES ELECTRIC WITH BENZINA ZERO DUO SCOOTER

AN AUSTRALIA POST contractor in Longreach has embraced battery power to deliver mail, using the Benzina Zero Duo electric scooter to ensure locals get their mail across the Central Queensland town and surrounding region.

David Freeman runs the Licensed Post Office (LPO) in Longreach, and he is Australia’s first Australia Post Contractor to make the shift to electrify his two-wheel fleet.

When David first saw the unique twin tubular frame design of the Duo he was hooked.

“It was the practicality of the Duo design that grabbed my attention first,” he said.

“There is no other scooter on the market that has this level of carrying capacity, far more than any of our pervious two-wheelers, and as we are carrying more parcels today this will streamline our delivery capacity. The Duo is super rugged with no plastic body panels to damage and when we get to end of life there is less to recycle.

“THE BENEFITS OF THE LOW RUNNING COSTS AND REDUCED SERVICING REQUIREMENTS COMPARED TO MY OLD BIKES MEANS THE DUO’S BECOME VERY COST EFFECTIVE, PLUS THEY LOOK AMAZING.”
Benzina Zero has developed a fitting kit for the Duo to utilise the current Australia Post panniers from a Honda ‘Postie Bike’ Australia Post Contractor David Freeman, with Benzina Zero’s Ben Silver, picks up his Duo electric mopeds

“We have purchased extra batteries so we can charge them from our solar system at our post office,” added David. “The benefits of the low running costs and reduced servicing requirements compared to my old bikes means the Duo’s become very cost effective, plus they look amazing.

“I have already been speaking with other mail contractors who are looking to make the switch and the Duo is the perfect replacement for their petrol two-wheelers.”

The Duo offers a range of 105km and a top speed of 50km/h, and it uses swappable battery technology so that it never has to be laid up for charging. Simply swap an empty

battery for a charged one, and off you go. In Queensland (and a number of other states) the Duo can be ridden on a car licence.

Also available is the Duo+ model which offers a higher top speed of 65km/h but requires a motorcycle licence to be ridden.

Benzina Zero, which is based in Brisbane, has developed a fitting system to allow a simple installation process utilising the existing Australia Post panniers and top box from the current ‘Postie’ bike. This allows Australia Post Contractors to continue to use the proven and tested Australia Post equipment and suppliers.

The ‘Postie’ delivery kit includes upgraded folding comfort footrests, a large 53L front basket, a phone holder and USB charger, and the rack adapter mount for the panniers and top box that fits both Duo (50km/h) and Duo+ (65km/h) versions. Letter sorting bags are also able to be used mounted to the handlebars.

HOW ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IS CHANGING THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY

THE TRANSFORMATION OF the automotive industry is well underway. Battery-electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), connected vehicles, software-defined vehicles, LiDAR, Radar . . . the list of innovations that are now part of the automotive conversation grows all the time and the industry we work in today is vastly different to the one we knew from just a couple of decades ago.

Crucial to these developments has been the rise in computer power and, most crucially, Artificial Intelligence (AI). Without it, many of the advances in modern vehicles would not be possible. Those information, safety, and driver assistance features that are deemed so

CRUCIAL TO THESE

DEVELOPMENTS

HAS BEEN THE RISE IN COMPUTER POWER AND, MOST CRUCIALLY, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI). WITHOUT IT, MANY OF THE ADVANCES IN MODERN VEHICLES WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE.

important today – think adaptive cruise control, automated emergency braking and so on – are only available thanks to AI interpreting and acting on the data flooding in from the many sensors and cameras with which modern vehicles now bristle.

18 | Motor Trader May 2024

But it is not just in the vehicles themselves that AI is revolutionising the industry. From manufacturing to sales, from marketing to quality control, from maintenance to supply chains, the tentacles of AI reach into every area of the industry (in truth, all industries), transforming the way we drive, the way we work, the way we interact with our vehicles, and the way we do business.

So, what is AI?

In simple terms – and steering clear of the complexities of things such as Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Neural Networks, which are branches of AI research – an Artificial Intelligence system is able to solve problems or perform tasks that might normally require human intelligence. It does so by being ‘trained’ on vast amounts of data fed to it. That data can be text, images, or any other information, and the AI analyses that data, identifies patterns within it, and makes decisions based on its analysis.

It is clever stuff and AI systems are becoming more potent. One only has to consider the deluge of news recently regarding the rise online of Generative AIused to create unique images and text, and which is perhaps best known as the type of AI that powers the ChatGPT platform - to see how quickly things are moving.

So how is AI influencing and changing the automotive industry, and where might we be headed with a technology that is improving so rapidly?

One of the most prominent applications of AI is its use in the development of autonomous, or self-driving, vehicles. These vehicles are, for the most part, equipped with an array of sensorsincluding LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), cameras, and radar - that collect massive amounts of data about the vehicle's surroundings. This data is processed in real-time to make critical decisions about functions such as acceleration, braking, steering, and navigation, and can adapt to complex environments.

Making a truly self-driving vehicle –one that requires not a jot of input from a human to navigate its way safely from any Point A to any Point B - is fiendishly difficult. There are self-driving vehicles currently seeing service as robotaxis in a number of U.S. cities (and other nations too), but while these are autonomous, they are mostly restricted to run in areas and on routes that have been mapped in extreme detail. Many are also connected to remote operator centres from where a person can connect and check in on them regularly.

Keeping an eye on robotaxis in this way doesn’t invalidate the technology that makes them work. And according to Professor Michael Milford from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) - who is an expert and researcher in the fields of AI, robotics, and autonomous

Many new vehicles bristle with sensors that allow for ADAS features and some level of autonomous driving.

vehicle technology (and also a Director of the MTA Institute) - the robotaxi experience demonstrates that a true selfdriving vehicle, free of human oversight, may not be too far away, even if robotaxi fleets themselves may not be cost-effective enough to survive.

“I think they show that, technically, it is fairly close to being possible,” said Professor Milford. “At the moment, I think the bigger issues [for robotaxi fleets] are around economic viability. The companies probably won’t necessarily say this publicly, but I suspect from the conversations I’ve had that they are struggling to find an economic use-case for operating, for example, a ride-share fleet that is going to make them enough money to justify the huge investment and significant on-going costs of keeping the fleet going. Remember they are competing against cheap, gig-economy workers who bring their own cheap vehicles, so it is a very tough bar to clear.”

Questions of the ethics of autonomous vehicles are another hurdle to be negotiated. AI might be ‘intelligent’, but how does it make what could amount to a life-or-death decision? If an accident is

imminent, do the occupants of the vehicles take priority or does AI give more weight to the other road users?

And what about the massive amounts of data that AI must absorb to be able to work? Do drivers want every moment of their time in a vehicle – from the speed the vehicle is travelling to the monitoring of their behaviour via in-cabin cameras – recorded in some manner?

The AI decision-making aspect has been a curly question wrestled with by researchers and developers for some time.

QUESTIONS OF THE ETHICS OF AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES ARE ANOTHER HURDLE TO BE NEGOTIATED. AI MIGHT BE ‘INTELLIGENT’, BUT HOW DOES IT MAKE WHAT COULD AMOUNT TO A LIFE-OR-DEATH DECISION?

“The way it will ideally go, and the way it is mostly going, is that you will have consortiums of the key stakeholders – the people making the car, the government, lawyers, members of the public and so forth – deciding on an approach on what people call the principles of ‘harm minimisation’,” said Professor Milford. “Everyone can have a slightly different definition of this, so the idea is that they come together and come up with a compromise.

“What would then happen is the AI system on the vehicle would be programmed and put in a framework to try and action those principles when they are in an accident. It’s not a rules-based system, because every scenario is slightly different, so the car is going to have some leeway in terms of interpreting and responding to how it would enact those principles.

“One of the beautiful things about autonomous vehicles, if the regulators do their job, is when bad things happen, and they will happen, there should be plenty of data available to forensically analyse whether in retrospect the car did everything it could have reasonably be expected to do or whether further improvements are needed. So that whole process is very tough, and it is a big problem, but I think ultimately it is a manageable problem.”

And as regards to the data question, AI needs that information to improve. And having that data can improve not only how the car responds to potential accidents but

has much wider ramifications for mobility in the community.

“The more data there is, the more effective the various technologies can be, but at the same time, you’re compromising people’s privacy and, in some cases, their right to anonymity,” said Professor Milford.

“Government has to make sure that they demand and get sufficient access and transparency of all these systems even if the company is the one operating it. That is something I think governments are very much aware of.

“It also comes into things like sharing data to maximise public/private transport transitions. If you want a city that operates really well, you need to have people mixing freely between those different transit mobilities and that requires some form of data sharing.”

Whatever the future for fleets of robotaxis, the drive to make self-driving vehicles available to everyone will continue and the benefits they may bring are many and important. They promise to improve road safety; enhance transportation efficiency; and they have the potential to provide mobility solutions for people who are unable to drive, such as the elderly and those with disabilities. It’s hard to argue against benefits like that.

While a world full of true self-driving vehicles may be some time away, AI is already well entrenched in the automotive industry in other ways. Here are a few of the areas in which it is currently used:

May 2024 Motor Trader | 21

ADVANCED DRIVER ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS (ADAS)

Advanced Driver Assistance System, or ADAS, is a term most of us will recognise. These ADAS functions include features such as adaptive cruise control, lanekeeping assistance, automated emergency braking, and parking assistance.

ADAS systems are designed to enhance safety and convenience for drivers and reduce the likelihood of accidents and they are seen as a stepping stone towards full self-driving vehicles, gradually introducing drivers to AI-based features.

NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSING (NLP) AND VOICE ASSISTANTS

AI's natural language processing (NLP) capabilities have found their way into vehicles through voice-activated virtual assistants. Examples include Apple's Siri, Google Assistant, and Amazon's Alexa. These voice assistants use AI to understand and respond to natural language commands, allowing drivers and passengers to control various functions without taking their hands off the wheel.

PREDICTIVE MAINTENANCE

AI can play a significant role in predictive maintenance for vehicles. By analysing data from sensors, diagnostic systems, and historical maintenance records, AI algorithms can predict when specific components of a vehicle are likely to fail or require maintenance. This approach to maintenance can help prevent breakdowns and reduce the cost of repairs.

TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT AND NAVIGATION

AI-driven navigation systems have become a standard feature in modern vehicles. These use real-time traffic data and AI to provide drivers with the most efficient routes. They consider

factors like traffic congestion, accidents, and road closures to offer alternative routes, ultimately saving drivers time and fuel.

DRIVER MONITORING AND ASSISTANCE

AI is used to monitor driver behaviour, and can detect signs of drowsiness, distraction, or impairment. Cameras and sensors can track the driver's eye movements and head position to assess their alertness. If a driver is detected as being distracted or drowsy, the system can provide warnings or take corrective actions.

VEHICLE-TOEVERYTHING (V2X) COMMUNICATION

V2X communication

industry. Robots with AI capabilities are used in various tasks, including welding, painting, and quality control. These robots are equipped with sensors and AI to ensure precise and consistent results. For instance, in painting, AI systems can optimise the use of paint, reducing waste and environmental impact. In quality control, AI-driven cameras and sensors can identify defects or inconsistencies in the production line in real-time, allowing for immediate adjustments.

CUSTOMER SERVICE AND CHATBOTS

AI is used in customer service through the use of chatbots. These chatbots are available 24/7 to assist customers with inquiries about vehicle features, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Customers can interact with chatbots through a company's website, mobile apps, or messaging platforms.

Chatbots provide immediate responses to frequently asked questions, guide customers through troubleshooting procedures, and even schedule service appointments. They offer convenience by reducing the need for customers to wait for human customer support.

PREDICTIVE ANALYTICS

involves vehicles communicating with each other and with infrastructure and can improve safety by allowing vehicles to exchange information about their position, speed, and intentions. For example, if a vehicle ahead suddenly slams on its brakes, it can transmit this information to nearby vehicles, which can then take corrective action. Furthermore, V2X communication can provide information about traffic conditions and road hazards helping drivers make more informed decisions and improve traffic flow.

SMART MANUFACTURING

AI and robotics are revolutionising the manufacturing processes in the automotive

In the modern automotive industry, data is king. Manufacturers and dealers collect vast amounts of data, from sales figures to customer feedback. AI-driven predictive analytics helps extract valuable insights from this data, supporting decisionmaking in various aspects of the business.

Predictive analytics can be used to forecast demand for specific vehicle models, enabling manufacturers to adjust production schedules accordingly. It can also help dealerships optimise their inventory, ensuring they have the right vehicles in stock.

Additionally, predictive analytics can be used for marketing strategies.

May 2024 Motor Trader | 23

AI algorithms can analyse customer behaviour and preferences to tailor marketing efforts.

SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT

Managing the flow of parts and components from suppliers to manufacturing plants and, ultimately, to dealerships is a complex task. AI systems can help streamline this process. For example, AI can track the movement of parts in real-time, enabling manufacturers to have better visibility into their supply chain. This helps them plan and adjust their production schedules. Moreover, predictive analytics can forecast the demand for specific parts and materials, allowing suppliers to adjust their production schedules accordingly.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND FUEL EFFICIENCY

AI is instrumental in improving the environmental and fuel efficiency of vehicles. This is particularly important as the automotive industry shifts toward electric and hybrid vehicles.

AI algorithms are used to optimise engine performance and reduce fuel consumption in traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Through real-time adjustments of factors such as fuel injection, air-to-fuel ratios, and gear selection, AI can maximise efficiency and reduce emissions.

In electric and hybrid vehicles, AI manages the interplay between the electric motor, battery, and internal combustion

engine (if present). It makes decisions about when to use electric power, when to charge the battery, and when to engage the combustion engine for the most efficient and eco-friendly operation.

IN-CAR ENTERTAINMENT AND PERSONALISATION

AI is also used to enhance the in-car entertainment experience and personalise vehicle settings. AI systems can learn about a driver's preferences over time and tailor the in-car experience to their liking. This can include adjusting music playlists, climate control settings, seat positions, personalising content recommendations, voice-activated controls, and seamless connectivity with smartphones and other devices.

CYBERSECURITY

As vehicles become more connected through internet connectivity and V2X communication, cybersecurity becomes a significant concern. AI can play a crucial role in detecting and preventing cyberattacks on vehicle systems and data.

AI-based intrusion detection systems can monitor the vehicle's network for suspicious activities, detect unusual patterns or anomalies in data traffic and take action. Additionally, AI helps encrypt data transmitted between vehicles and infrastructure.

ROBOTICS AND WORKPLACE CHALLENGES

While AI has brought about significant advancements in the automotive industry, it is not without its challenges – for example the aforementioned regulatory issues, particularly around self-driving vehicles as governments address liability issues, ethical dilemmas, and establish standards for safety and performance.

But it’s not just about the vehicles, supply chains, chatbots and so on. Powerful, new AI systems have now turbocharged the potential of robotics. And judging from the recent videos and news around human-like robots, the engineering challenges of building these machines are just about conquered.

POWERFUL, NEW AI SYSTEMS HAVE NOW TURBOCHARGED THE POTENTIAL OF ROBOTICS. AND . . . THE ENGINEERING CHALLENGES OF BUILDING THESE MACHINES ARE JUST ABOUT CONQUERED.

That opens up a whole new world. Are robots, nimble enough to do even the trickiest of tasks and now powered by truly capable AI, about to become part of everyday life? Are we going to see robots doing repairs, paint panels, perform diagnostics? Are they going to join us in the workshop?

Sounds like science fiction? Maybe not, said Professor Milford.

“There likely will be disruption across all industries - including automotive and every sector within it,” he said.

“The big game-changer here is these new AI technologies like Large Language Models and Foundation Models, which most people would know of from things like ChatGPT.

VIDEO: OPENAI SPEECH-TO-SPEECH REASONING

“One of the things these new AI approaches promise is, finally, the capability for physical robots – robots on wheels or on legs with arms - to actually be able to do a lot of the stuff that people do in a way that just hasn’t been possible before . . . That obviously has a lot of relevance in maintenance, repairs, servicing and all those sorts of things.

“There are still huge technical problems to be solved, but I think that people would now say that there is a possibility the whole sector could be disrupted, whereas five years ago people would have said there was no reasonable chance of that.”

This disruption may come quickly and be substantial, or it might not. As with much potentially game-changing technology, its speed of development, speed of adoption and severity of its impact in the real world, is one that causes much chinstroking debate amongst researchers and developers.

“I think a good middle-of-the-road estimate would be that we will see real levels of robots and automation involved in a number of the processes that we considered purely human. The age of obs that only people do is over,” said Professor Milford.

“Previous projections of everything being entirely automated and everything being done entirely by robots is looking less likely, but hybrid-type workplaces, where there are robots and people working alongside each other, looks increasingly like the bet you would want to place.”

While that scenario may sound a tad alarming, it shouldn’t be looked at in purely negative terms said Professor Milford.

“Disruption is always very challenging and confronting but there are lots of positive aspects – for example in terms of the health of workers in manual jobs, and increasing the talent pool available to go into these jobs because sometimes the robots can do the literal heavy lifting. There

“I THINK A GOOD MIDDLE-OF-THEROAD ESTIMATE WOULD BE THAT WE WILL SEE REAL LEVELS OF ROBOTS AND AUTOMATION INVOLVED IN A NUMBER OF THE PROCESSES THAT WE CONSIDERED PURELY HUMAN. THE AGE OF JOBS THAT ONLY PEOPLE DO IS OVER.”

are a lot of positives that come out of it.”

As AI continues to evolve, it promises to usher in a new era, not just for workplaces, industries, and business, but for society as a whole. Increasing efficiency and productivity and automating repetitive tasks; improving healthcare through better diagnostics and drug research; delivering better educational experiences and improving accessibility; creating new industries; assisting people with disabilities; accelerating scientific research . . . the list of potential benefits is long.

The automotive industry is going through a transformative revolution right now with electrification. AI is in the mix as well, already part of our everyday working lives even if we don’t think about it much and it isn’t grabbing the headlines like the latest whizz-bang EV model. No doubt we will adapt to it too as its true potential becomes realised.

NISSAN ALL-SOLID-STATE BATTERY PILOT LINE IN JAPAN

IN APRIL, NISSAN showed its in-construction all-solid-state battery (ASSB) pilot line at its Yokohama Plant in Japan.

All-solid-state batteries are something of a ‘holy grail’ for carmakers. The technology, which uses a solid electrolyte instead of a liquid as found in most current batteries, offers many advantages that manufacturers – and by extension, the consumer – very much want.

They offer higher energy density, shorter charging times, and can offer similar or greater capabilities than current batteries while being are smaller and lighter. Allin-all, solid-state batteries will likely be a gamechanger for the auto industry.

Many major carmakers are working to develop solid-state batteries - Toyota has said it will launch vehicles using them in a

JLR CREATES ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM USING SECOND-LIFE RANGE ROVER BATTERIES

JAGUAR LAND ROVER

(JLR) has partnered with an energy storage start-up, Allye Energy, to create a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to provide a mobile zero-emissions power system.

Called the MAX BESS, the unit holds seven second-life Range Rover and Range Rover Sport PHEV battery packs that are removed from the vehicles and slotted into customised racks without additional processing. Each BESS can store 270kWh of energy at full capacity.

The BESS, which is the first to use JLR’s second-life Range Rover batteries, can charge up to nine Range Rover PHEVs at any one time, and is itself designed to be easily charged by plugging it into any CCS-capable Vehicle Charger using the same input as JLR’s existing PHEV and BEV products. Other connectivity options enable it to be connected to renewable power at fixed or off-grid sites.

JLT says the BESS weighs less than 3.5 tonnes, allowing it to be fully portable to provide energy storage for retailers or JLR sites. The unit will also be commercially available for use outside of JLR.

As part of its Reimagine strategy, JLR is investing £15 billion ($AU28.5 billion) into electrification include considering the full lifecycle of EV batteries.

The company says battery value chains are predicted to grow 30 percent annually

from 2022 to 2030, to reach a value of more than $400 billion ($AU622 billion). Second-life battery supply for stationary applications is predicted to exceed 200 gigawatt-hours per year by 2030, creating a global value over $30 billion ($AU47 billion).

JLR says its batteries can be safely deployed in low-energy situations once their health falls below electric vehicle requirements, which typically leaves a 70-80 per cent residual capacity. Following these second-life use cases, JLR says it will recycle the batteries so that raw materials can be recovered for re-use.

CARMAKERS FLOCK TO BEIJING FOR

AUTO CHINA 2024

CHINA IS THE world’s largest car market. Some 30 million cars were sold there in 2023, and a market of that size is, of course, vitally important to any carmaker worthy of the name. As a consequence, when the Beijing International Auto Show, also known as Auto China, comes around, the automotive world focuses there.

This year, from April 25 to May 4, at the China International Exhibition Center in Beijing, plenty of carmakers turned up to show hundreds of new production vehicles and concepts. Not surprisingly, a large number of those were electrified, and perhaps also not surprising was seeing many global manufacturers there, highlighting their commitment to China

This will include five EVs from a new ID.UX sub-brand aimed at younger customers. The company said the ID.UX brand ‘. . . combines proven VW virtues with lifestyle-oriented design DNA. Brandspecific features include a progressive exterior design along with a driver-centric interior featuring an entirely new display and operating concept (HMI) for young customers.'

VW is also introducing electric versions

THE COMPANY SAID ITS ID. ELECTRIC VEHICLE RANGE WILL GROW IN CHINA TO 16 MODELS BY 2030.

of its internal combustion engine (ICE) models and expanding its portfolio in China with new plug-in hybrids with an electric range of over 100km. 12 new ICE models and six hybrids will debut by 2030.

The company also said it is to introduce new vehicle architectures by adding local platforms in China. Volkswagen China Technology Company (VCTC) is developing the Group’s first electric platform specifically for China, and at least four additional models for the electric entrylevel segment are to be built on the China Main Platform (CMP) from 2026.

VW also unveiled the ID. Code CONCEPT, giving a preview of a large electric SUV, and one that is geared to offer Level 4 autonomous driving capability.

“The ID. CODE gives a first preview of the future of VW in China: with a new design, a new technology standard and a holistic brand experience – specifically oriented to the needs and wishes of our Chinese customers,” said Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand. “We are ushering

in a new era of mobility in China, together with our Chinese partners.”

That was not all from the Volkswagen Group as a whole. Along with Bentley, Lamborghini and its own VW brands presenting at the show, the Group's Audi brand debuted the Q6L e-tron. Tailored for the Chinese market, the Q6L e-tron SUV is built on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) platform (developed with Porsche) and will be built at a new factory in China with first deliveries expected in 2025.

Audi’s strategy for the China market includes a commitment to localising key models.

Porsche, another member of the VW Group, presented the world premiere of the eighth variant of the Taycan EV, which is built specifically for the Chinese market and one offering higher performance with improved luxury and comfort equipment. Its aim is to meet, the company said, ‘the needs of Chinese consumers for a more powerful and practical sports car.’

China is an important market for Porsche. In 2023, the company said 79,283 cars were delivered to customers there, corresponding to a 25 per cent share of Porsche's global deliveries that financial year.

THE MG EXE181 CONCEPT

MG revealed a truly exceptional-looking concept at Auto China. The company, now part of China's SAIC Group, debuted the EXE181 - a riff on the brand’s recordbreaking EX181 car which reached 410.5km/h in 1959. The new concept, designed by the company's London Advanced Design Center, aims for a top speed of 415 km/h and a ludicrous sprint to 100km/h in under two seconds.

A drag coefficient of 0.181 no doubt helps it post such performance, but reports suggest that underneath that slippery exterior, the single-seat EXE181 has four electric motors generating enormous amounts of grunt.

While such a car is unlikely ever to hit the roads, as a technology platform, it is quite something.

CATL UNVEILS SHENXING PLUS, ENABLING 1000KM RANGE AND SUPERFAST CHARGING

CATL, THE CHINESE battery and technology company that is at the forefront of battery tech for electric vehicles, unveiled the Shenxing PLUS - an LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery that it said can achieve a range above 1000km and deliver superfast charging.

CATL said the 1000km pure-electric range comes from technological breakthroughs that deliver ultra-high compact density while effectively controlling the volume expansion during charge and discharge cycles.

Aside from offering long range, CATL says the Shenxing PLUS can deliver a 600km range in just 10 minutes of charging. Again, tech breakthroughs are responsible here including a newly developed AI polarisation model that can predict and control the charging current in real time, enabling faster and smarter energy replenishment.

ALFA ROMEO LAUNCHES JUNIOR ELECTRIC SUV Auto

THIS IS THE Alfa Romeo Junior, the first model from the storied Italian carmaker to be available in completely battery-electric form.

A very smart-looking (what you’d expect from Alfa Romeo) compact SUV, the Junior will also be available with a hybrid drivetrain. Of the three variants announced, the Elettrica and the Elettrica Veloce will be all electric, while the Ibrida will offer the hybrid set-up.

Both the Electtrica and the Eletricca Veloce are front-wheel-drive and come with a 54kWh battery, but power availability varies between the two. The standard Eletricca offers 116kW/260Nm while the Veloce delivers 179kW/345Nm.

Range is a claimed 410km (WLTP) for the 116kW version. Charging via 100kW fast charging stations will get you from 10 to 80 per cent charge in 30 minutes.

The Ibrida model adopts a 102kW, 48V

Hybrid VGT (VariableGeomtery Turbo) architecture, pairing a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged engine with a 48-volt battery and 21kW electric motor built into a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The Ibrida will be available with front-wheeldrive initially, but there will be an option to have Q4 all-wheel-drive at some point.

There is to be a special launch edition of the Junior – called the Speciale – available with either electric or hybrid powertrains. The model offers a few extra touches beyond the standard models.

Inside, the Junior offers a premium cabin using top-notch materials. Layoutwise, there’s a fully digital 10.25-inch TFT instrument screen to access the car’s data and the settings. In the middle of

the dashboard, and oriented towards the driver, there’s a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen.

There’s 400-litre of storage available in the boot space, and a ‘frunk’ up front to store a charging cable.

Alfa Romeo says the Junior comes equipped with Alfa Connect Services – which offers advanced onboard connectivity and a range of services. Thanks to over-the-air (OTA) technology, the car's maps and software are always kept up to date, and functions include 'My Navigation', consisting of apps to remotely search for destinations and points of interest (PoI), as well as real-time alerts on traffic, weather and speedcams.

Via the My Alfa Connect smartphone app, customers can also interact with the car using 'My Remote,' with various services, such as remote control of the car’s functions (opening/closing doors or flashing the lights) via smartphone or smartwatch; vehicle location; and control of certain parameters (speed and area). E-Control offers the option to remotely manage start-up and stopping, to schedule charging or, if necessary, to heat or cool the interior before getting into the vehicle.

ALFA ROMEO SAYS THE JUNIOR COMES EQUIPPED WITH ALFA CONNECT SERVICES – WHICH OFFERS ADVANCED ONBOARD CONNECTIVITY AND A RANGE OF SERVICES.

Also integrated is the ‘Hey Alfa’ virtual assistant and ChatGPT (AI) which use voice recognition to give useful information.

For those wondering about the name ‘Junior’ – which doesn’t feel particularly Alfa Romeo of the modern era – it was not the first choice. In fact, the company launched the vehicle with the name Milano. However, rumblings of discontent from the Italian Government saw Alfa Romeo change the name just a few days after that launch. With the Junior reportedly to be built at the Stellantis (which owns Alfa Romeo) factory in Poland, the Italian Government said that it could only carry that name if it was built in Italy.

In a media release, Alfa Romeo said, ‘Despite Alfa Romeo believing that the name met all legal requirements and that

there are issues much more important than the name of a new car, Alfa Romeo has decided to change it from “Milano” to “Alfa Romeo Junior” in the spirit of promoting mutual understanding.’ Politics can be weird, but who cares. We’re still going to get one beautifullooking car.

TWR UNLEASHES THE V12 SUPERCAT

TWR HAS REVEALED its debut car, with the British company giving an early peek at a limited-production performance monster that looks very special indeed.

Called the Supercat, it is a six-speed manual, supercharged V12-powered SuperGT boasting more than 447kW (600 bhp) and built from the Jaguar XJS platform.

Engineered by a team led by Fergus Walkinshaw, son of the original TWR founder, Tom Walkinshaw, the Supercat looks fabulous, boasting the Jag XJS profile, silhouette and flying buttresses, and looking every bit the successor to the TWR Jags that graced motor racing tracks in the 1980s, including Bathurst.

While the Supercat retains the

unmistakable look of the XJS, TWR says that every exterior panel has been re-sculpted in carbon fibre, delivering significant weight saving, drag improvements and rigidity benefits over traditional panel materials.

The company adds that there has been an exhaustive testing, development and tuning program that will deliver ‘for those who desire a truly connected and analogue driving experience.’

With the Supercat not getting its full launch until the middle of the year, there’s lots more detail to come, including on the interior which, TWR says, has been ‘fundamentally re-imagined.’

MERCEDES-BENZ UNWRAPS THE ELECTRIC G-CLASS

THE ALL-NEW, FULLY electric Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology has made its debut, and the battery-electric variant of Mercedes’ legendary off-roader that first appeared in 1979 looks to be just as capable as any of its predecessors.

Like its conventionally powered siblings, the all-wheel drive G 580 is built on a ladder-frame foundation, has a selectable low-range off-road gear reduction system,

. . . THE ALL-WHEEL DRIVE G 580 IS BUILT ON A LADDER-FRAME FOUNDATION, HAS A SELECTABLE LOW-RANGE OFF-ROAD GEAR REDUCTION SYSTEM, AND HAS INDEPENDENT FRONT SUSPENSION AND A RIGID AXLE AT THE REAR.

Auto news

the electric G-Class generates virtual differential locks via torque vectoring. A 116kWh battery integrated into the ladder frame offers up to 473km of range (WLTP) and energy powers four individually controlled motors located near the wheels. They are integrated into the ladder frame too and develop a maximum total output of 432kW and maximum torque of 1164Nm.

around 32 minutes. AC charging of up to 11kW is available. An energy recuperation system works during coasting and braking and has five settings.

Underbody protection – essential for any off-road vehicle – is comprised of a mix of materials, including carbon, which is 26mm thick and weighs 57.6kg, substantially less, Mercedes says, than similar protection made of steel.

And weight is a consideration. Batteries are heavy and the G 580 tests the scales at a hefty kerb weight of 3085kg.

However, batteries also offer pretty good performance, and so it proves here, with 0-100km/h done in 4.7 seconds. Top speed is 180km/h.

Wheelbase is 2890mm, while the whole vehicle comes in at 4624, long, 1931mm wide and 1986mm tall. Turning circle is 13.6m but the G-Class does have G-Turn, a feature to be used off road and which

uses the four e-motors to be able to spin the vehicle in place. There’s also G-Steering for better off-road turning and an intelligent off-road crawl function. Other technologies are also top shelf.

The MBUX infotainment system includes a 12.3-inch driver and media display with touch controls as standard. The display and operating concept uses adaptive software to make personalised suggestions for numerous infotainment, comfort and vehicle functions. There’s smartphone integration via Android Auto or Apple CarPlay and USB-C interfaces enable connections to other mobile devices.

MBUX Augmented Reality for Navigation can help drivers and does so by superimposing graphic navigation and traffic information onto live images on the media display.

An ‘ECO Assistant’ analyses navigation data along an expected route and can help adapt the driving style to minimise energy consumption and maximise recuperation. Meanwhile, Navigation with Electric Intelligence uses numerous factors to plan the fastest and most convenient route, including charging stops. To lay out the route, it calculates the energy required, considering topography, route, ambient temperature, speed as well as heating and cooling requirements. It also reacts dynamically to traffic jams or changes in driving style.

Additional features include temperature-controlled cupholders and a wireless charging system for mobile devices.

Driver assistance (ADAS) and safety systems are comprehensive, using a suite of sensors, cameras and radar, and include all the usual suspects with Active Brake Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Attention Assist, Active Steering Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, and Active Distance Assist amongst them. A Parking Package with 360-degree camera provides support when parking and manoeuvring.

TMYTH BUSTING THE RIGHT TO DISCONNECT LAWS

HE RIGHT TO Disconnect legislation shows how changes to the law can create misconceptions.

Some recent media have implied that the new right to disconnect laws will stop employers from sending messages to their employees at all hours, or that employers will be penalised for accidently hitting ‘send’ instead of ‘schedule’ when messaging.

The reality is that these laws mean the employee has the right to not respond and if they exercise that right, they cannot be penalised for it.

Employers and managers will be able to exercise their management prerogative to send communications out of hours, and there are times when it will be reasonable to expect a response. It may be deemed reasonable when the employee is on call or has specific provisions in their employment contract that extends their employment hours, provided they are appropriately compensated for that.

Employers may also contact employees out of hours to discuss changes to shift times or any other operational notices that can’t wait until the following workday, such as notice of an office closure. The Right to Disconnect legislation itself sets out matters to be taken into account when determining reasonableness.

Another myth is that this rule is only about employers whereas it also includes communications from third parties such as a client, customer or supplier. It is advisable to provide such third parties with a clear message so they know what to expect.

Thirdly, a dispute does not have to be raised only by an employee. The employer could raise a dispute about concerns they have if they feel they’ve been treated adversely. An

THE REALITY IS THAT THESE LAWS MEAN THE EMPLOYEE HAS THE RIGHT TO NOT RESPOND AND IF THEY EXERCISE THAT RIGHT, THEY CANNOT BE PENALISED FOR IT.

example of this is when the employee fails to comply with the reasonable requirement to respond.

For small businesses (those with less than 15 employees), the legislation will come into effect in August 2025. However, all other businesses have up to 26 August 2024 to ensure processes are compliant and in line with the new legislation.

Some critics have alleged these laws will mean ‘the end of flexibility’ or that it is too prescriptive. Supporters say they do not infringe on flexibility to work where that has been acknowledged and agreed.

An audit of current work hours and communication needs is advisable before the new laws are implemented. Also, check employment contracts for compliance and create a culture of leading by example.

IADAPTING YOUR SHOP TO WORK WITH ELECTRIFIED VEHICLES

RECENTLY PARTICIPATED IN an interactive presentation hosted by MTA Queensland on the topic of transitioning automotive businesses as we experience a slow (but inevitable) shift towards electric vehicles (EVs). Its intent was to provide advice and strategies to assist with that transition.

During the session, an interesting question was posed by the participants around the requirements to set up a workshop ready to service, maintain and repair electric vehicles.

Exclusion zones and appropriate signage should be used when working on electric vehicles

Well, where to begin? While there are no specific physical dimensions, the following guidance will be a great start.

First and foremost, always refer to the manufacturer’s procedures for different makes and models as they may/will vary from one manufacturer/model to the next.

Secondly, refer to the Australian Standards (AS) AS5732:2022, Electric Vehicle Standards – Maintenance and Repairs for specific or granular detail on some of the following general information.

Only 'Competent Persons' should perform work on EVs. The Australian Standards define a Competent Person as "a person who has acquired, through education, training, qualification or experience, or a combination of these, the knowledge and skills enabling that person

.
. . ALWAYS REFER TO THE MANUFACTURER’S PROCEDURES FOR DIFFERENT MAKES AND MODELS AS THEY MAY/WILL VARY FROM ONE MANUFACTURER/MODEL TO THE NEXT.

to perform the task required.”

Please ensure your staff undertake the relevant training prior to working on EVs.

EV servicing and repairs must be undertaken in a dedicated area. The area should be free from moisture, poor ventilation, clutter, trip hazards, and live components. The area and vehicle should have the correct signage - for example, steering wheel cover and temporary exclusion zone signage.

MTA Institute News

Insulated tooling and correct PPE must also always be used

Exclusion zones should be maintained as it minimises distractions and unwanted walkthroughs.

Signage should include 'Danger High Voltage' as well as the name of the technician responsible for that vehicle. Refer to the Manufacturer and the AS for all the signage detail.

The relevant Safety Data Sheets (SDS) must be made available and in particular, the SDS for the battery electrolytes used in that vehicle. The area must have suitable firefighting measures as found on the SDS. The firefighting measures should be adjacent to the dedicated EV area. The area must have spill containment measures adjacent to it, and the area must be free from water ingress and have adequate ventilation and working space.

Suitable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn for both EV routine service and working with energised components. This includes suitable gloves, apron, face shield, and boots. No metallic jewellery should be worn - no rings, necklaces, watches, bracelets, or other metallic articles.

When a competent person is working with EV live components, there should be an observer and an automated external defibrillator (within 200m) nearby.

Follow the manufacturers recommendations when moving EVs

SUITABLE PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) MUST BE WORN FOR BOTH EV ROUTINE SERVICE AND WORKING WITH ENERGIZED COMPONENTS.

manually around the workshop. Generally, this should be done by isolating the wheels from the ground to prevent the electric motor/s from rotating. A wheel dolly jack might be suitable.

The manufacturer's Special Service Tools (SST) should be used to undertake work on EVs. If SSTs are not available, suitable insulated tools must be used along with an insulated mat where applicable.

If removed from a vehicle, an EV battery pack should be stored in a secure, isolated environment for the interim. Suitable HighVoltage (HV) signage must be used. EV battery storage location should be chosen to limit the potential spread of contamination or fire damage to surrounds. EV battery packs must not be exposed to moisture or temperatures exceeding 60°C. Again, refer to manufacturer's specifications.

While this is an extensive list, it is not necessarily complete, so please refer to the Australian Standards and Manufacturers procedures or reach out to us for further information.

Apprentice of the Month: April 2024

The MTA Institute Apprentice of the Month is proudly sponsored by Spirit Super

APPRENTICE:

WORKPLACE:

APPRENTICESHIP:

EMMA WARD IS the MTA Institute Apprentice of the Month for April 2024.

The 19-year-old is in the fourth year of her light vehicle apprenticeship and works at Mercedes-Benz Sunshine Coast.

Emma’s interest in pursuing a career in the automotive industry began while she was at school. When she was just 15, and with no particular interest in automotive at the time, Emma completed a week of work experience at Mercedes-Benz Sunshine Coast. It was a life-changing few days.

“It was really something I stumbled upon,” said Emma. “I never really thought about being in the trade, but I also didn’t know what I wanted to do after school. The opportunity came up to apply for the work experience and I really enjoyed it. I finished Year 10 then left school and went straight into the apprenticeship.”

“THE OPPORTUNITY CAME UP TO APPLY FOR THE WORK EXPERIENCE AND I REALLY ENJOYED IT. I FINISHED YEAR 10, THEN LEFT SCHOOL AND WENT STRAIGHT INTO THE APPRENTICESHIP.”

Working at a Mercedes-Benz dealership does mean that Emma is working on some of the most sophisticated and technologically advanced vehicles currently available and, as a fourth-year apprentice, she is trusted to do most jobs that come through the shop. She is also partnered up with one of workshop’s master technicians, meaning she gets some time on the really detailed, complex jobs that will one day become part of her regular work.

“I do a lot of repairs and services and am starting to lean into the more diagnostic scene at the moment,” she said. “And working with one

of our master techs means when he does big jobs - like quotes for engines, diagnosis and compression testing, and all the stuff to do with engine replacements – I help out. He goes through it all with me and that is pretty cool.”

Mercedes-Benz is a leader in the electrification of the automotive industry and currently has eight electric vehicles (EV) and three hybrid vehicle models available in Australia. Working at a Mercedes dealership means Emma is getting exposed to some of this technology and while she has worked on some EV components, she is keen to learn more. Happily, Mercedes-Benz does offer detailed training for its technicians and there are, of course, training options elsewhere too.

“We have done a couple of electric motors replacements, and that is pretty cool, but there is a Mercedes-Benz course specific to their vehicles that you can do,” she said. “I have to wait until I am qualified to complete that because it is a big responsibility with that much electricity. I am also doing an EV course through MTA Queensland.”

At 19-years-old and with just a few months to go before she completes her apprenticeship, Emma has a long career in the industry ahead of her. She hasn’t yet given too much thought as to where that career might lead or what direction it may take, but there is plenty of time, and where she is now with Mercedes is an excellent foundation.

“I haven’t really thought too far down the track,” she said. “Working on a race team would be cool, but I love working in the workshop I am currently in and doing the job I am doing.”

GOVERNMENT EXPANDS PROGRAM TO ENCOURAGE MORE APPRENTICES INTO CLEAN ENERGY SECTORS

THE AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT

is expanding the New Energy Apprenticeships Program.

The program, aimed at encouraging and supporting people into clean energy sectors, was originally announced in 2022, and the goal was to deliver 10,000 apprenticeships. It gives apprentices up to $10,000 in support over the duration of their apprenticeship.

On May 3 this year, the government revealed that 2,210 apprentices had signed up since the program’s launch and that from June 1, it will grow to incorporate more jobs - including covering apprentices involved with electric vehicle (EV) maintenance - and lose the requirement that ‘an apprentice’s work be solely dedicated to clean energy . . .'

“We are constantly monitoring our programs and listening to industry to understand what they need to make access to programs designed to address skills needs easier and eligibility more commonsense,” said Minister for Skills and Training, the Hon Brendan O’Connor MP.

“This is a great opportunity for Australians to gain a trade whilst accessing government incentives, as well as doing something tangible for the environment by working in industries that will reduce carbon emissions.”

Efforts to attract more automotive apprentices to be ready to work on electric vehicles is welcome news to the automotive industry, and the adjusting of the New Energy Apprenticeships Program was met mostly positively by industry

“THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR AUSTRALIANS TO GAIN A TRADE WHILST ACCESSING GOVERNMENT INCENTIVES, AS WELL AS DOING SOMETHING TANGIBLE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT . . .”

stakeholders, including the Motor Trades Association of Australia (MTAA).

In a media release, the organisation said that ‘This is a sensible move by the government in supporting the automotive workforce prepare for the biggest transformation to take place in the sector – the shift away from fossil fuels towards electric powertrains.’

However, the MTAA added that while automotive electricians and technicians are eligible for the incentive, motorcycle technicians and panel beaters, who are already immersed in supporting electric vehicles, should also be included.

“Securing Government support for our members and their workforces has been a top priority of the MTAA this year. We are pleased the government is listening but note there is more to be done,” said Matt Hobss, CEO of the MTAA.

“We look forward to continuing the discussion with the government on the important role the automotive industry can play in the transition of the economy to a low emission future.”

BSKILLS – THE CRITICAL ELEMENT TO AN ELECTRIFIED FUTURE

OTH THE QUEENSLAND and Australian Government are incentivising the take up of electric vehicles (EVs) and consumers are responding. The next focus needs to be centred on how the automotive industry is supported to respond to the growing demand.

MTA Queensland has once again delivered an EV business development workshop in late April 2024, providing information to automotive businesses to plan for an electrified future. Further online workshops will be delivered, and a significant focus is on ensuring businesses develop the necessary skills and workforce to service and repair electric vehicles. Recently, I came across a story in the media identifying that many damaged EVs are not being repaired due to the lack of skilled labour. A Guardian Australia article, ‘Australia’s skilled mechanics shortage forcing insurers to write off electric vehicles after minor accidents’, published on 26 April 2024, made the following observations:

emerging and current workforce has the right level of support to incentivise them to access the training in the necessary volume so EVs can be repaired in a timely and safe manner. As the recent article highlights, if the economy is not producing enough skilled workers, vehicles can’t be repaired.

• Electric vehicles are routinely being written off after minor accidents, as a shortage of skilled mechanics and parts, as well as outdated laws, leads Australian insurers to scrap EVs prematurely instead of repairing them.

• Roughly one in 10 repairers in Australia are certified to service EVs, according to data from the Australian Automotive Service and Repair Authority.

• The shortage of mechanics not only balloons wait times, but in some instances EVs have to be transported long distances to the closest repair facility, adding costs. Currently, the Queensland Government subsidises apprentice training and skill sets for new entrants to the industry and existing workers to develop the necessary skills to service and repair EVs. MTA Queensland and its national equivalent MTA Australia are continuing to address the issues associated with skills development with both the Queensland and Australian Government. This is to ensure that the skills investment settings are appropriate and that the

It is encouraging that subsidies for training will be there, but making sure its sufficient and properly targeted is something Government will need to consider. New and existing workers and automotive businesses want to see that Governments understand this and provide appropriate support so that the industry can respond appropriately to this significant transformation.

MTA Queensland, through its Industry Skills Advisor, will continue to advocate for the industry around this issue to ensure its businesses and workforce receive the support needed for the ongoing electrification of the industry.

The role of the Automotive Industry Skills Advisor (ISA) is aligned to the Skills for Queensland – Great training for quality jobs priorities, which include delivering an expanded focus inclusive of employment, small business and regional skills needs. The ISA engages with employers, small business, and industry stakeholders to provide high quality, evidence-based industry advice and intelligence about current and emerging industry direction, regional skills needs and training solutions, jobs growth and employment opportunities. This advice informs the Queensland Government on its priority setting for skills and workforce development for the Automotive industry in Queensland.
