Earlier this month, MTAQ Queensland held another celebration, hosting its annual Auto Women dinner. The event saw over 100 women (and a few blokes too) in attendance - from apprentices to business owners - with everyone coming together to acknowledge the achievements of women in the automotive industry and to support the work of the Auto Women initiative - a program established by MTA Queensland to support women into the industry and through their careers. Starting your own business can be similar to starting your own family - it takes years of gentle nurturing before they stand on their own two feet. Waz Ziebell has experience in both. With one small child and another on the way he is kept very busy as his business, Cairns Customs and Car Sound continues to grow. IT SEEMS LIKE THE TEAM AT CAIRNS CUSTOMS AND CAR SOUND DO EVERYTHING. TELL US ABOUT THE PRODUCTS AND SERVICES ON OFFER IN YOUR WORKSHOP? WZ: Where do I start! We try to offer a

‘one-stop shop’ approach by covering all aspects of automotive electrical and mechanical diagnostics, servicing, repairs, calibrations and upgrades. To do this effectively, I’ve split my business over two separate workshops just metres apart. One focuses on the mobile electronics, electrical, air conditioning and accessory fitting side of things, while the other focuses on mechanical, alignments, ADAS and insurance assessment portions of the business. WITH SUCH A BROAD SKILLSET IT CAN’T HAVE BEEN A NORMAL STORY TO GET YOU STARTED. WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND IN THE INDUSTRY? WZ: I started a school-based mechanical

apprenticeship in the late ’90s and have been involved in the industry ever since. I went out on my own nearly 10 years ago, specialising in mobile electronics and accessory fitting and have now expanded the business significantly. I’ve continued studying along the way and now have auto electrician, air conditioning and hybrid/EV qualifications under my belt.

ARE YOU STILL HANDS ON IN THE BUSINESS TODAY? WZ: Very much so. I’m still on the floor of

both shops and I am hands-on in the office. You’ll usually find me carrying out electrical diagnostics / repairs or ADAS calibrations.

WZ: We get behind the local burnout scene, in particular a few of the grassroots competitors. While we do have a few stickers on cars, we’re in it to support the community, we don’t expect to win work from it.

DO YOU OR YOUR STAFF ACTIVELY COMPETE IN MOTORSPORT? WZ: I don’t compete currently, but I would

like to build a track car in the future. One of my staff, Brock, is heavily involved in both speedway and burnout competitions.

HOW MUCH IMPORTANCE DO YOU PLACE ON SOCIAL MEDIA FOR YOUR BUSINESS? WZ: I placed a lot of importance on social media in the early days of the business.

It was 100 per cent of my advertising and was an excellent return on investment. Nowadays, it has dialled back somewhat as the rest of the industry has caught up and the socials are saturated.

WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE GREATEST ADVANCEMENT IN TECHNOLOGY FOR YOUR BUSINESS? WZ: The inclusion of ADAS repair and calibration as well as hybrid/EV repair to our business. Also, adding CNC to our

business, and preparing for 3D scanning, modelling and printing. Additionally, to a lesser extent, the shift away from pneumatic tools to almost exclusively using battery-powered tools.

DO YOU CONSIDER THAT THE ADVANCEMENTS IN ELECTRIC CARS WILL HAVE AN IMPACT ON YOUR BUSINESS? WZ: I guess it already has. Training has

already been undertaken by my staff and me, and we recently held a Hybrid/ EV training event for MTA Queensland at our new workshop. I feel once the warranty period expires on current hybrid and EVs, we (and the auto community) will see a great influx of work on these

vehicles. While we are all geared up to take on this future influx now, most of our current work on these vehicles is a steady trickle stemming from the collision repair industry, and aftermarket accessory areas (dash cams etc). The other immediate impact we’ve noticed is the withdrawal

of hybrid / EV information from some data suppliers which will no doubt effect future repair processes.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE GREATEST BENEFIT OF YOUR MTA QUEENSLAND MEMBERSHIP? WZ: I first joined MTA Queensland about

WHAT TRAINING DO YOU DO WITH STAFF? WZ: Staff and I attend local Autotech and

Valhalla training nights as well as TAT webinars whenever possible. We try to attend everything we can that is offered locally. Key staff and I have also attended MTA Institute hybrid and EV skillset training courses in the last 12 months.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNG YOU STARTING OUT IN THE INDUSTRY? WZ: Find a good mentor and absorb as much as you can.

business, if the immobiliser scheme being trialled in Cairns and TSV goes well, I see a lot more of them in the future. I am also in the process of getting my mod plate license so we can do that in-house as well. We are seeing a huge opportunity to grow the ADAS diagnosis, repair and calibration portion of the business. Personally, I want to delve into 3D scanning, 3D printed and CNC machined parts. Finally, I want to complete a Cert IV or better in TAE so I can start giving back to the automotive community by teaching the next generation.

WHAT CARS DO YOU OWN? WZ: I’ve reduced the fleet of regos in recent years and now only have a newer model Toyota Hilux and my toy, a ’67 HR ute. The ute is a project with big plans so stay tuned for a reveal one day soon.

WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR SPARE TIME? WZ: Spare time? What’s that? I am building

my business and raising a family. Kristen and I moved into an apartment close to the workshop so I could be available for clients with odd drop-off and CLICK TO VISIT THE pick-up hours. A fantastic night of networking, live music, and delicious food, the Auto Women Dinner provided a great opportunity for guests to come together in a relaxed environment to catch up and have a good time. The event saw over 100 women (and male champions) in attendance, from apprentices to qualified technicians, and administrative assistants to business owners. Bringing the event to life as hosts were Auto Women Mentors Kellie Dewar, the Deputy CEO of MTA Queensland, and Kathy Winkcup, the Association's CFO. are underrepresented in our industry and we need to attract more, but we are excited to see the percentage of women in maintenance and leadership roles increasing everyday. Our own female apprentice enrolments grew by 43% over the last year,” said Kellie. The second guest speaker who stole the show was Lily Blocksidge, recipient of Auto Women’s Round 1, 2023 Leading Edge Scholarship. Auto Women is committed to providing professional development opportunities for women working across the automotive industry and was thrilled to see Lily’s confidence soar after

completing the course. Lily is a fantastic example of the calibre of young females coming through, initially signing up for a school-based apprenticeship in 2019. After graduating, she continued working as a trade assistant before commencing her light vehicle qualification, and now, at just 20 years old, she is nearing the final year of that training with Albany Creek Auto Centre. The scholarships, funded by MTA Queensland, Spirit Super, and Women and Leadership Australia, provide a fantastic opportunity for professional growth and to date have assisted six women in progressing their careers, with two more to be announced later this month. “Our work doesn’t end here. DUCATI AND LAMBORGHINI COLLABORATE ON RIDER SAFETY COMMUNICATION

UCATI HAS DEMONSTRATED a vehicle-to-vehicle communication system aimed at improving the safety of motorcyclists. At a demonstration event organised by the Connected Motorcycle Consortium (CMC) - an international association of leading manufacturers of two-wheeled vehicles that aims to include motorbikes in the future of connected mobility – Ducati teamed up with Lamborghini to showcase this new technology, which uses displays and audio alerts to warn riders and drivers of danger. Ducati says its research focused on the three critical and dangerous accident cases - those that place motorbikes in an obscured position in relation to oncoming cars or those that put motorcyclists in a situation where they don’t have visibility of what is happening in front of them. In these situations, communication between vehicles integrated with on-board sensors could help reduce the number of accidents.

The cases demonstrated by Ducati and Lamborghini were IMA (Intersection Movement Assist), LTA (Left Turn Assist) and DNPW (Do Not Pass Warning). IMA (Intersection Movement Assist) considers an intersection with reduced visibility where a motorbike on a busy road approaches an intersection where a car is arriving at the same time from a secondary road. To make this situation even more critical, Ducati opted to add a fixed obstacle to totally obscure the view of the motorbike from both the car driver and the car’s

auxiliary systems. In this case, a warning signal is displayed on the car dashboard alerting the motorist to the arrival of the motorbike, advising the driver to approach the intersection with extreme caution. LTA (Left Turn Assist) relates to an intersection where both the car and motorbike are traveling on the main road but in opposite directions, and the car wants to turn left. In this case, the motorbike is less visible than the car, even through the auxiliary systems, and as soon

as the motorist turns on the blinkers when approaching the intersection, a warning signal for the motorbike is displayed. DNPW (Do Not Pass Warning), is where a motorbike in a line of traffic wants to overtake a large vehicle in front of it which, in turn, has a car ahead of it that wants to make a left turn. This car is not visible to the motorcyclist. In this case, it is the motorcyclist that sees the warning as soon as the system detects that both the car and the motorbike have turned on their blinkers.

safety features over men. 37 per cent of women versus 27 per cent of men saw emergency braking as important, while 38 per cent of men versus 32 per cent of women saw a touchscreen as a “must have” feature. While general tech such as Apple CarPlay/Android Auto was of most importance to 18-24s (50 per cent), it was less so among other groups with only 18 per cent of the over 65s stating the same. Though we may be a long way from driverless cars, 22 per cent of Australians say they don’t trust and feel uncomfortable with new driving or autonomous tech, with 25 per cent saying they have some doubts and concerns. Only 9 per cent say they fully trust and feel comfortable with autonomous driving. 23 per cent said they were neutral about the tech. 26 per cent of 18-24s said they fully trust autonomous driving tech while only 8 per cent of 45-54s, 3 per cent of 55-64s, and 2 per cent of over 65s say the same.

A SURVEY OF 1000 Australian adults by Savvy - one of Australia’s largest online financial brokers - has revealed that 52 per cent of respondents see autonomous parking features such as 360-degree cameras are their “must have” feature in a new car. Other active safety measures Australians consider important in a car purchase are blind spot monitoring (50 per cent), emergency braking systems (32 per cent), adaptive cruise control (28 per cent), and lane change assist (18 per cent). 35 per cent of those surveyed said touchscreen displays were important, followed by Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration (34 per cent), and keyless entry and/or a dedicated smartphone app (31 per cent). Women were more likely to choose

DAIMLER RECORDS 1000KM FUEL-CELL TRUCK TRIP

AIMLER TRUCK HAS demonstrated the possibilities of hydrogen fuel-cell technology for long-haul road transportation with the company’s Mercedes-Benz GenH2 Truck covering 1,047km on one tank of liquid hydrogen. Powered by a cellcentric (a joint venture company between Daimler Truck and Volvo Group) fuel-cell system and equipped with a liquid hydrogen fuel tank set-up, the truck completed the run fully loaded with a gross combined vehicle weight of 40 tons under real-life conditions. Daimler Truck says it prefers liquid hydrogen in the development of hydrogenbased drives. In this state, the company says the energy carrier has a significantly higher energy density in relation to volume compared to gaseous hydrogen. As a result, more hydrogen can be carried, increasing the range and enabling 28 | Motor Trader October 2023

comparable performance of the vehicle with that of a conventional diesel truck. The company has said that batteryelectric trucks are the ideal choice for distribution haulage as well as for longdistance haulage with regular deployment on plannable routes with suitable distances and charging options. However, hydrogen-based drives could be a better solution, especially for very flexible and particularly demanding deployments in heavy-duty transport and long-distance haulage. It adds that it is convinced that rapid and cost-optimised coverage of this energy demand can only be achieved with both technologies.

MCLAREN BOSS SAYS EV TECH NOT YET THERE FOR ‘REAL’ ELECTRIC SUPERCARS

N AN INTERVIEW with Bloomberg, McLaren Automotive CEO Michael Leiters said it will be some time before the supercar manufacturer will build a fully electric vehicle. While its traditional competitors – such as Ferrari and Lamborghini – have announced their first all-electric models, and there are plenty of start-up performance car manufacturers on the all-electric journey, McLaren’s boss said the technology, at least for his company, was not quite there yet. “Weight is super important, you need also the right range,” said Leiters in the interview. “. . . I don’t expect this technology to be ready for real supercars before the end of the decade. “We do not want to do an electric car which weighs two tons and then has 2,000 horsepower. We have to come to the weight regions or areas where we are today

with 1,500kg and, especially for a McLaren, weight is in the core of our brand. We can’t afford to have a heavy car which is not nimble and the driver is not connected to the car when it goes to the curve or onto a track. This is crucial for us.” McLaren has dipped its toe into the electrification of its cars. The company’s current Artura model is a hybrid and, back in 2013, its P1 hybrid supercar formed one part of what became known as the ‘holy trinity’ – a group of super-powerful hybrid supercars that all appeared at around the same time and which included the Ferrari La Ferrari and the Porsche 918. AMPOL AND HANSON TO CONDUCT RENEWABLE DIESEL TRIAL

MPOL HAS ANNOUNCED it will conduct a renewable diesel trial, with building and construction materials company Hanson confirmed as its first customer partner. Ampol says the trial will allow it to get a practical understanding of the customer demand and market feasibility of renewable diesel – fuel made from biomass sources – in Australia. The company will supply Hanson with a blend consisting of 20 per cent renewable diesel and 80 per

cent ultra-low sulphur diesel in addition to its Ampol Amplify additives. The announcement of the renewable diesel trial follows Ampol's recent partnership with Japan's largest oil company, ENEOS, to explore the production of renewable fuels at its Lytton refinery in Brisbane. The trial will start in the coming weeks and run for approximately two months, with an evaluation process to be executed prior to exploring a wider roll out to Ampol's broader customer base.

NSW GOV’T TO END EV REBATE AND SHIFT FOCUS TO INFRASTRUCTURE THE NSW GOVERNMENT is set to invest $260 million in EV infrastructure, but end rebates for EV purchases. The funding will underpin the rollout of a new NSW EV Strategy which the Government says will be developed in partnership with industry stakeholders, to boost investment in critical EV infrastructure. As part of the package, rebates for EV purchases ($3000) and exemptions for stamp duties will cease on 1 January 2024. However, transitional arrangements are to be set that will ensure those who have purchased or placed a deposit on an eligible EV, and are awaiting delivery of the vehicle, will still be eligible, regardless of whether the vehicle has been delivered by that date. The Government says it will prioritise investment in infrastructure for drivers in regional NSW, renters and people who live in apartments, and people who don’t have access to home charging so they can still take advantage of the cost savings from 30 | Motor Trader October 2023

owning an EV. It will fund projects such as fast chargers on commuter routes, more kerbside chargers near apartment blocks, and upgraded grid capacity and charging hubs to support fleets. A Road User Charge will commence from 1 July 2027 (or, if earlier, when battery EVs make up 30 per cent of new light vehicle registrations) and will apply to all zero and low emissions vehicles, including plug-in hybrids, registered for the first time or transferred from 1 January 2024.

HEN ASKED TO consider classic cars of the 1960s, it’s quite likely that your mind will drift to thoughts of American muscle cars or sleek European sports machines. The company envisioned creating a sports car that could rival the likes of Porsche, Jaguar, and Ferrari. To achieve this ambitious goal Toyota collaborated with Yamaha, and the result of their work was exceptionally successful.

The 2000GT looked wonderful, with its long hood, sleek body, and fastback roofline - as good as anything from the artisan workshops of Europe - and it was a sensation at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1965. Underneath its gorgeous, sweeping

lines, the 2000GT had an X-frame chassis, rack-and-pinion steering, disc brakes all round, and double-wishbone suspension at each corner. Its 112kW, 2-litre, inline six-cylinder engine – developed with Yamaha - sent power through a 5-speed manual or threespeed auto transmission to the rear wheels, and while such an engine may seem less than potent by today’s standards, the 2000GT proved itself a performance beast. It proved its mettle on the track, earning a podium spot in the 1966 Japanese Grand Prix and setting numerous speed and endurance records at the Yatabe Test Track in Japan. These successes made it something special beyond its exterior aesthetic appeal. On the inside, the two-seater 2000GT featured two sporty bucket seats upholstered in high-quality materials. Early models were equipped with vinyl seats, while later versions featured leather upholstery. The dashboard was a work of art - elegantly styled and made from top-notch materials. A wood veneer dash was used in some models, which added a touch of sophistication to the interior. The dashboard housed a set of classic analogue gauges, including a large speedometer and tachometer, as well as auxiliary gauges for monitoring engine vitals like oil pressure and water temperature. The 2000GT became available to the public in 1967 but only around 350 units were built. This limited production contributed to its exclusivity and desirability – something which was bolstered further by the car’s appearance in the James Bond film You Only Live Twice (in which it appeared as an open-top model, which was never actually available as a production option). Today, decades after its production ceased, the Toyota 2000GT continues to captivate car enthusiasts and collectors. UBARU AUSTRALIA HAS unveiled an off-roadoriented concept of the Subaru Crosstrek compact SUV, with the Boost Gear Crosstrek concept featuring an array of enhancements and accessories. Features include all-terrain tyres and a suspension lift kit, while the concept also boasts a distinctive matte wrap and hood decal, front and rear under guard, complemented by scratch-resistant paint on select external surfaces. Off-road accessory wheels, rallystyle mud flaps, and additional fog lamps are also added, as are signature ‘Subaru Boost Gear Crosstrek concept’ turquoise accents. Subaru says a major focus has been placed on user functionality and the integration of user-friendly features. AUDI RS 6 AVANT PERFORMANCE AND AUDI RS 7 SPORTBACK PERFORMANCE HEADED TO AUSTRALIA

UDI AUSTRALIA HAS revealed pricing and specification for the new RS 6 Avant performance and RS 7 Sportback performance. The performance pair are both more potent and faster than their predecessors, packing an almighty punch, and both will be available soon in showrooms. The duo are the peak of the combustion RS range with the heart of both machines a potent 4-litre V8 biturbo TFSI engine with power increased from 441kW to 463kW and torque upped from 800Nm to 850Nm compared to their non-performance predecessors. The sprint to 100km/h can now be done in a very swift 3.4 seconds. A 48-volt mild-hybrid electrical system can recover power while coasting or under light throttle, while the start/stop system also draws on the 48-volt electrical

system and functions at speeds up to 22 km/h. There’s also cylinder on demand (COD) technology that can shut down four cylinders under light throttle load. Power from the engine flows through a standard eight-speed tiptronic with faster shifting times to the permanent all-wheel drive quattro. The self-locking centre differential is also lighter and more compact which, Audi says, improves driving dynamics and offers more precise cornering. The Audi drive select dynamic handling system lets the driver control the vehicle’s character via six profiles: efficiency, comfort, auto, and dynamic, and two customisable RS-specific RS 1 and RS 2 modes. The RS 6 Avant performance and RS 7 Sportback performance retain the same level of specification as the existing

RS 6 interior models, with the addition of a special wheel and tyre package. In addition to the engine upgrades, the duo gets 22-inch gloss silver and black metallic alloy wheels in 5-Y-spoke design. The new lightweight wheel is around five kilograms lighter than the 22-inch aluminium wheel on the outgoing RS 6 Avant or RS 7 Sportback. These new wheels are paired exclusively with a new specially developed ultra-highperformance Continental Sport Contact 7 285/30 tyre. Two new exterior packages can be equipped - a matt grey exterior styling package, and a matt carbon black package that features several exterior carbon highlights. The exterior items altered in each package can include the look of the front spoiler, front side flaps, side sill inserts, rear diffuser insert, trim strips on the side windows, exterior mirror housings, roof rails (RS 6 Avant only), and Audi rings and exterior badging, depending on the styling package selected. In the interior, the RS design packages

RS 7 interior in grey and red now include the colour blue. The steering wheel in Alcantara black features contrasting stitching in Mercato blue, whilst the floor mats, the side of the centre console, and the selector lever cuff also come with blue contrasting stitching. The front and outer rear seat belts are fullsurface Ocean blue, while the selector lever knob and the side of the centre console are made with Dinamica microfibre, consisting of around 45 per cent recycled PET fibres. TOYOTA HILUX GR SPORT FLAGSHIP LANDS IN AUSTRALIA

OYOTA’S NEW FLAGSHIP HiLux variant, the GR Sport, has arrived in Australia. Available from $73,990 (plus on road costs), the GR Sport is more than just a series of visual upgrades. Performance enhancements start with an increase in maximum outputs for the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine, with a 10 per cent increase in power and torque to produce 165kW/550Nm. Toyota says the six-speed automatic transmission has also been recalibrated to optimise the GR Sport’s increased engine outputs. GR Sport gains the same track width increase as the HiLux Rogue, growing by 135mm at the front and 155mm at the rear, along with a 15mm increase in ride height compared with the core HiLux range. LOTUS REVEALS EMEYA ELECTRIC HYPER-GT

OTUS HAS TAKEN another step towards producing a range of luxury performance electric vehicles with the unveiling of the Emeya, a four-door ‘hyper-GT’. A number of spec levels will be available for the Emeya and Lotus released details for the top model. They are, not surprisingly, pretty spectacular, with a high-power dual motor set-up delivering 675kW and up to 985Nm, a 0-100km/h sprint time under 2.8 seconds, and a top speed of 250km/h. A two-speed transmission and that dual-motor configuration works in tandem with a race-grade braking system. A 102kWh battery pack will, the company said, give the Emaya a range that is expected to be ‘broadly similar to that of the Eletre’, the company’s all-electric SUV that boasts a 112kWh battery pack and a 600km range (WLTP). SKODA ENYAQ RS PERFORMANCE ELECTRIC CONFIRMED FOR AUSTRALIAN MARKET

KODA AUSTRALIA WILL introduce the Enyaq battery electric vehicle (BEV) to Australia in July 2024. The range will include the Enyaq 85 ( formerly the 80) and be topped by the latest Enyaq RS - the most powerful vehicle ever offered from the VW-owned, Czech brand. The upgraded Enyaq RS debuts in Europe in both five-door SUV and SUV Coupe body styles with the 82kWh battery, dual-motor, all-wheeldrive set-up delivering 250kW, a driving range of 547km (WLTP) and a 0-100km/h sprint time of 5.5 seconds. The Enyaq 85 brings 210kW of power, with up to 576km of driving range (WLTP) on a single charge, rear-wheel drive and a 0-100km/h time of 6.7sec. Skoda says the upgraded Enyaq boasts more advanced electric motors, batteries and thermal management - such as the ability to pre-heat the battery – and deliver

an increased charging speed and better overall driving experience. Charging for both models offers a peak capacity of up to 175kW, allowing a recharge time from 10 to 80 per cent to 28 minutes. Skoda adds that the Enyaq for Australia will also include software version 4.0 that brings a completely redesigned user interface with a more intuitive design that makes it easier to control the car's functions. The virtual instrument panel and head-up display also receive new graphics, and the voice assistant is improved.

NEW VEHICLE SALES HIT RECORD IN SEPTEMBER

HE NEW VEHICLE market recorded 110,702 sales in September, representing an increase of 18.3 per cent on the same month in 2022 and setting a new September record. Sales across every State and Territory increased with Queensland marking a rise of 13.5 per cent (23,415 sales). Sales in the Australian Capital Territory were up 20.6 per cent (1,806); New South Wales 24.3 per cent (35,968); South Australia 11.2 per cent Toyota RAV4 (6,676); Tasmania 21.0 per cent (1,972); Victoria 16.0 per cent (29,426); Western Australia 22.4 per cent (10,577) and Northern Territory 3.6 per cent (862). Toyota was the highest selling marque with 20,912 sales. Mazda followed with 8,031 then Ford (8,015), Kia (7,303) and Hyundai (6,217). The Toyota Hi-Lux was the top selling vehicle recording 5,776 sales. It was followed by Ford Ranger (5,429), Tesla Model Y (3,811), Isuzu Ute D-Max (2,885) and Toyota RAV4 (2,798). Sales of SUVs and Light Commercial vehicles made up 79.4 per cent of sales with Passenger vehicles making up 16.8 per cent. Battery electric vehicles accounted for 8 per cent of sales, while electrified vehicles (battery electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid) recorded 18.3 per cent of sales. “The record result shows that Australian car buyers value a broad choice of vehicles

The Bill proposes an amended definition of ‘casual worker’ which considers the ‘totality’ of the employment relationship so that the test as to determining who is a casual worker is broader and less reliant on the specific terms of the contract. REVERTING TO THE ‘OLD’ MEANING OF ‘EMPLOYMENT’

HIS MONTH WE’VE had the privilege of interviewing some of our future leaders as part of the MTA Institute’s Apprentice of the Year awards, with the announcement of the winner scheduled for the 11th of November at the MTA Queensland 2023 Industry Award Gala. I must say we’re in good hands and the calibre of this year’s nominees is impressive. MTA Institute runs apprentice of the month awards and, combined, they form the 12 nominees for the annual award. We wish all of them the best of luck and, in our eyes, they’re already winners. On a personal note, I’m not going to lie about being pretty excited to tick one thing off the bucket list by attending this year’s 2023 SEMA event in November. I was scheduled to go in 2020, however the pandemic put a hard stop on those plans. I’d like to thank the Queensland Overseas Foundation for awarding me the bursary to undertake this professional development and knowledge exchange opportunity. I’ll happily report on what I

APPRENTICE: KAYDO WIRIHANA WORKPLACE: LOWRY’S AUTO BODY REPAIRS APPRENTICESHIP: AUTOMOTIVE REFINISHING TECHNOLOGY

AYDO WIRIHANA IS the MTA Institute Apprentice of the Month for September 2023. The New Zealand-born 19-year-old is about to finish the second year of his auto refinishing (spray painting) apprenticeship and has impressed both his employer and MTA Institute trainer with his ability, work ethic, and passion for the work. He is, his employer said, reliable, enthusiastic, skilled, takes pride in his job, and is a natural talent. Just a few years ago, however, being an automotive painter was not something that Kaydo was necessarily thinking about as a career. While at school, his mum suggested he look for work and reached out to Lowry’s to set up a bit of work experience. “I thought it looked pretty cool and tried it out,” said Kaydo. “They’re all really friendly here, and I did one week of work experience, and when the week ended they asked me to come back the next week. I kept on going and before you know it, I was working here.” A short time later and Kaydo was an employee and had started his apprenticeship. And he hasn’t looked back, proving to be a gifted painter and using his blossoming skills to help the Lowry’s team repair, to factory condition, a diverse range of vehicles that come through the workshop.

“We do a lot of insurance work, and we work on any make or model apart from motorbikes and trucks,” said Kaydo. “And I am doing pretty much any paint job now apart from the flash, multi-layer pearl jobs – I have to go down to do a course in Brisbane with PPG to learn some of that.” The work, and the team with whom he does that work, makes the job of painting a really enjoyable experience he added. And seeing the finished product – a damaged vehicle returned to pristine condition – is really satisfying. “The blokes I work with are heaps of fun, and we get a lot of work done,” he said. “And It is pretty cool to see a bush-bashed HiLux go out looking like new! We get a few of those.” From the beginning of his apprenticeship, Kaydon has been doing his training with the MTA Institute, and has been, according to his trainer Keiran Charters, exceling in ever requirement. “He is a good listener, and when I am teaching him something he listens intently, asks questions, and shows a passion for the trade,” said Keiran. “He always completes his work for when I get there and, all-in-all, he’s a great bloke and it’s a pleasure to go and visit and work with him.” While just 19, and still with a couple of years to go until he has completed his qualification, Kaydo’s ambition is simple and direct – to CLICK be good at his job, be TO VISIT THE LOWRY’S AUTO successful and, perhaps, to BODY REPAIRS FACEBOOK PAGE one day run his own shop. T LAST MONTH’S Munich motor show, Cupra, the performance offshoot of Spanish brand Seat that is now part of the Volkswagen Group, revealed this astonishing vehicle, dubbed the DarkRebel. A sharp-looking, pure electric twoseat sports car with a shooting-brake style, the DarkRebel’s design was helped along, Cupra says, by 270,000 vehicle 'configurations' – from the ‘Cupra Tribe’ of ambassadors and customers – using the brand’s online Hyper Configurator. The result is pretty special. Boasting a pair of scissor doors and a wicked mercury-like exterior colour, Cupra CEO Wayne Griffith said at the cars unveiling

between the base of the two seats and extends forward. The shifter, made from a transparent material that illuminates, can be found here. Lighting is an important component of the car, and is set up to flow through the front of the cabin, below the windshield, and emerge from the sides of the seats. The seat backs are crowned with light too, and the steering wheel, which

combines elements from the world of racing and the world of gaming, also has lighting effects. The Supersport bucket seats have headrests supported by a structure made from transparent material and copper inserts. Sustainable materials made from 90 per cent biodegradable bamboo are used in the interior. Technology includes a thermal camera that monitors the condition of the cabin and an intelligent climate control system that adjusts the temperature and airflows accordingly with the air exiting through gills located under the windscreen. The DarkRebel's User Experience/User Interface offers three unique experiences: Exponential Square, Exponential Cube, and Exponential Infinite: Exponential Square: amplifies the

experience through a modern digital cockpit, with futuristic graphics as well as a 3D customisable avatar. Exponential Cube: the vehicle embraces its racing DNA, taking inspiration from the high-performance racing cars and the gaming world with real-time racetrack positioning, lap timing, and performance data. Exponential Infinite: offers a new connected mobility experience. While the car is parked and charging, users can enter Metahype, Cupra’s space in the metaverse. The car offers users the opportunity to interact with the Capra Tribe. While Cupra did not reveal what system was powering the DarkRebel, reports suggest a production version would share a powertrain system sourced from inside the VW Group – perhaps the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) – a platform
