CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER MTA QUEENSLAND

PATIALITY’ IS A word used often in our submissions to Federal and State departments and agencies. It refers to the geographic spread of the membership, the motor trades and consumers who access the products and services of the automotive value chain. Under MTA Queensland’s rules, the Board is representative of the geographic spatiality, with district representatives elected ‘to allow a more equitable representation’ of regional members. They provide the overview of the issues experienced by motor trade employers whilst Divisional Chairs brief on the industry circumstances for each of their respective sectors. To deepen understanding of issues experienced by individual members across the state, a member engagement strategy has been implemented. This conforms with the obligation of ‘Service Excellence’ required by the Strategic Plan 2019-2021. Deputy Group Chief Executive Kellie Dewar’s Viewpoint overviews its purpose, which is beyond checking a member’s contact details. It includes listening to members’ views on their specific trade, their business issues, and their policy opinions. To ensure that the engagement is worthwhile both to the member and to the Association, staff will

4 | Motor Trader August 2019

have the qualities and training to engage with members. The technological transformations underway across the motor trades have differing impacts on the businesses of our geographically dispersed membership. The business models, service demands, and skill requirements vary according to location. In metropolitan areas, automated or electronic vehicles will increase exponentially compared to rural and remote areas. As an employers’ association, we have a duty to ensure the training curricula, service delivery and advocacy, regardless of location or the engine technology type serviced or repaired, reflects the member’s business interest and views. The member engagement strategy will contribute to achieving this outcome. A holistic outlook of members engaged in the automotive value chain is important to enable informed advocacy at stakeholder, departmental, agency and ministerial meetings. The member engagement strategy will complement the current interactions between the corporate office and members. The 2018/2019 Financial Year Report card indicates that there were 5,233 direct member engagements and 5,416 exchanges with members on industrial relation matters. Rewardingly, our new MTA Queensland website had 289,600 page views and 95,400 website users.

ADVOCACY Recently, MTA Australia hosted a table at the 2019 Federal Liberal President Party’s dinner with the Prime Minister Scott Morrison and selected Cabinet Ministers which I was invited to attend. Joining the table of MTA Australia attendees was the Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Housing, Michael Sukkar. Overarching

“AS AN EMPLOYERS’

ASSOCIATION, WE HAVE A DUTY TO ENSURE THE TRAINING CURRICULA, SERVICE DELIVERY AND ADVOCACY, REGARDLESS OF LOCATION OR THE ENGINE TECHNOLOGY TYPE SERVICED OR REPAIRED, REFLECTS THE MEMBER’S BUSINESS INTEREST AND VIEWS.” industry policy issues within the Assistant Treasurer’s portfolio were key agenda items. These included the proposed mandated and prescribed Code of Conduct for Access to Motor Vehicle and Repair information and technical data and automotive franchising issues. There was the opportunity to discuss with the Minister matters important to Industry. Issues raised involved automotive skills and training within the new framework of the new National Skills Commission, the economic and social challenges and the technological dynamics associated with ‘mobility’, and the diverse impacts of technological and digital disruption. Kellie Dewar in Viewpoint indicates I attended the National Transport Commission’s (NTC) roundtable to discuss development of a nationally consistent regulatory framework to support the safe commercial deployment of automated vehicles into Australia. Over the past two years or so, we’ve been consistent submitters to the NTC on proposed policy options and will contribute to this current consultation. Careful consideration is being given to the policy options canvassed by the NTC.

For our dealer and repairer membership, it appears there are risk implications that may arise from mechanical or digital malfunctions or accidents associated with automated vehicles. Significantly, the skill sets to support automated vehicle incidents have yet to be determined. There’s been two meetings at MTA Queensland’s corporate office with Federal Members of Parliament following the recent Federal election. The Member for Bonner and Chair of the Standing Committee on Procedure Ross Vasta and the Member for Moreton and Shadow Assistant Minister for Education and Training Graham Perrett visited to familiarise themselves with our innovation and training facilities and to discuss motor trade and training issues in the context of local and national policy frameworks. MTA Queensland’s corporate office is in the Federal electorate of Moreton and I assure members we are represented by a Member of Parliament supportive of the motor trades. Collaboration at the national level will be on the agenda when the MTA Australia Board members and Chief Executive Officer meets with the MTA Queensland Board to discuss their priorities and focus for the future. The meeting will be on 22 August at the Association’s corporate office.

CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES In prior From the Desk of the CEO, I’ve referred to the Cooperative and Automated Vehicle Initiative (CAVI) underway with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR). I met with DTMR General Manager Denis Walsh for an update on the initiative’s progress. The goal of CAVI is to test cooperative and automated vehicle technologies that make roads August 2019 Motor Trader | 5

From the desk of the CEO “ACHIEVING THE ABA –

BUSINESS INNOVATION AWARD SUPPORTS THE JANUARY 2017 DECISION AND VISION OF THE MTA QUEENSLAND BOARD TO PROVIDE LEADERSHIP ON THE EMERGING INNOVATIONS AND TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES AFFECTING THE MOTOR TRADES.” safer by contributing towards zero road deaths and serious injuries on the state’s roads. It lays the technical foundations for the next generation of smart transport infrastructure and has four components: Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems Pilot - the largest on-road testing trial in Australia of cooperative vehicles and infrastructure; Cooperative and Highly Automated Driving Pilot; Vulnerable road user pilot; and Change management. The MTA Institute’s auto-electrician capability relating to wireless technology will be utilised to install and remove the technology that will be fitted on the vehicles to gather the data. The project is expected to be implemented by 2020. At the conclusion of the trial the data gathering technology will be removed and the vehicles restored to their original state.

AND THE LAST THING: AN ACCOLADE With much enthusiasm, I share a significant achievement in which each

of us may celebrate and take pride. MTA Queensland has won the annual Australian Business Awards (ABA) - Business Innovation Award. Our application had to meet strict and specific criteria that included demonstrating the core values of business innovation, employee engagement, customer satisfaction, experience management, business sustainability, product and technology innovation via a set of comprehensive award categories. The focus of our application was detailing the business innovation initiative to establish in 2017 the MTAiQ, the first automotive/mobility innovation hub in Australia. Achieving the ABA – Business Innovation Award supports the January 2017 decision and vision of the MTA Queensland Board to provide leadership on the emerging innovations and technological advances affecting the motor trades. It reflects too the commitment of the MTA Group staff to achieve the objective of a stand-alone innovation hub – the MTAiQ. Congratulations and thank you on the substantial achievement. Over the coming months, the intention is to build on the MTAiQ’s award-winning status. The intention is to establish an overarching body undertaking major national projects. Until next month, as Henry Ford, the industrialist and the founder of the Ford motor company said, ‘execute ideas with enthusiasm . . . as it is the bottom of all progress’.

OW AND THEN in general conversation, friends, family and even I will say, “Oh, I didn’t know that!” Quite regularly, members say they were unaware of a particular service or corporate partner benefit. It is these almost throwaway remarks that caused us to think about a mechanism to engage with members on a oneon-one basis to listen to their views and impart membership, service and benefit information. Our vision is to be Queensland’s most trusted, influential and engaged industry body. Guiding the thinking was the recently approved Strategic Plan 2019-2021 which has as its prime aspirational strategy ‘Service Excellence’. Clearly, when a member or members casually imply that they were unaware of a service or benefit, it is our duty to seek improvements to our communications processes. To enable increased awareness of all memberships services and benefits the intention is to unfold a comprehensive member engagement strategy. Its purpose is to engage members directly. It is in addition to other communications such as account and human resources, the Weekly Industry Bulletin and priority

advices. New members will receive an email informing them of acceptance of their membership of their chosen division and detailing the services and benefits accruing from their belonging to MTA Queensland. Likewise, members renewing or transferring to another division will receive an email restating the many advantages of involvement in an industry specific organisation. Importantly, at each stage - new, renewal or transfer - members will receive a follow-up telephone call to discuss their access to, and information about, the wide range of services and benefits available to them, including our free digital advice offerings as part of our digital champions project. I assure members it is not a bothersome process. It has a dual function: to check that we, MTA Queensland, have the right contact details for the member and to discuss membership services and benefits or industry issues. The engagement strategy will commence within the coming fortnight and will be ongoing. The aim is for all members to be contacted at least once every six months. This is a standalone strategy and complements the field work of area managers who visit members at their business premises to discuss industry and Association issues. For the Association itself, direct one-onone engagement with members - either new, renewing or transferring - provides the opportunity to hear industry issues and local views relating to the wider automotive value chain. This is particularly relevant with businesses adapting to technological innovations and disruptions. These insights will be advocacy aids when engaging with stakeholders including government ministers, at industry round-table

“FOR THE ASSOCIATION

ITSELF, DIRECT ONE-ON-ONE ENGAGEMENT WITH MEMBERS - EITHER NEW, RENEWING OR TRANSFERRING - PROVIDES THE OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR INDUSTRY ISSUES AND LOCAL VIEWS RELATING TO THE WIDER AUTOMOTIVE VALUE CHAIN.” discussions and in submissions. More detail on the roll-out will be provided in the Weekly Industry Bulletins and, of course, Viewpoint.

SMALL BUSINESS DIGITAL CHAMPION Thank-you to members who responded to the Small Business Digital Champion survey regarding their digital presence. Analysis of the responses indicated that ‘businesses in the automotive industry fully accept that it is crucial to have an online presence’. The findings are contained in the ‘3 Month Milestone’ report which is a representative assessment of the digital needs of the automotive industry. Specifically, survey findings indicated that: ‘72% of members surveyed believe it is extremely important to have an online presence and the remaining 28% believe it is either somewhat important or very important. This indicates that businesses in the automotive industry fully accept that is it crucial to have an online presence.’ In a prior Viewpoint, I advised that MTA Queensland, as an industry association, had been selected as one of 15 Small Business Digital Champions under the Australian Government’s Small Business Digital Champions Project. The project

extends across two years and its purpose is to promote the benefits of ‘going digital’ to members in their respective organisations. Overall, having an online presence is a recognised business necessity. However, the assessment of responses suggests that online platforms are not being utilised to their maximum extent to secure profile and economic benefits. In response to modes of communicating to customers, members indicated ‘not applicable’ or ‘mail’ in 47 per cent of responses. This highlights an issue for careful consideration where many members are either not communicating or are using traditional mail to engage with their customers. On the other hand, it is promising to see some members adopting bulk email to communicate. I remind members of the free digital support program which includes personalized, face-to-face mentoring, resources and workshops. Joining details are HERE or via the button on the front of the MTA Queensland website - Small Business Digital Champion.

INDUSTRY AWARDS The Industry Awards Dinner will be held on Saturday, 16 November at the Emporium Hotel, Southbank. The Awards comprise of the Apprentice of the Year Award, Innovation Award, Women In Industry Award, and Community Award. Nominations for these awards have now closed but I can reveal we have had the largest number of applications in the history of the awards and the quality of each is outstanding. Choosing the award winners will be a challenging task for the selection panel. I encourage you to consider attending the dinner to celebrate achievement and enjoy industry camaraderie. MANUFACTURING HAS 300 COMPANIES (UP FROM 260 IN 2015) OF WHICH 70 PER CENT ARE NOW EXPORTING THEIR PRODUCTS. COMBINED REVENUE IN 2015 WAS $5.2 BILLION AND NOW IT IS AT AN OPTIMISTIC $4 BILLION.” ADVOCACY The National Transport Commission (NTC) has distributed a significant paper: ‘In service safety for automated vehicles’ for consideration. It relates to the role and regulation of different parties involved in the safe operation of automated vehicles on Australian roads. It considers safety duties that should apply to various parties, and the institutional and regulatory arrangements to support them. Group Chief Executive Officer Dr Brett Dale attended an NTC roundtable to discuss development of a nationally consistent regulatory framework to support the safe commercial deployment of automated vehicles into Australia. I distributed the document to our Automotive Engineers Division, which is a stakeholder in the process, for consideration and input to our submission.

INTERESTING INDUSTRY NEWS Sometimes it is wise to take a balanced approach when considering statistics.

The Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association commissioned ACA Research to undertake a study into the outlook for the industry post Australian car manufacturing. This is without Holden, Ford and Toyota as the primary sources of employment, funding and innovation. The research indicated that there are now more Australian automotive manufacturing businesses operating and thriving than four years ago. Currently, automotive manufacturing has 300 companies (up from 260 in 2015) of which 70 per cent are now exporting their products. Combined revenue in 2015 was $5.2 billion and now it is at an optimistic $4 billion. Employment within the 300 companies is approximately 9,800 people compared to 21,000 before Victorian and South Australian plant closures.

FINALLY At this time of the year, implementing the rules and processes for the election of specific divisional office bearers is a priority. This year, nominations have been called for the Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary of these divisions: Engine Reconditioners Association of Queensland, Automotive Remarketing Division, Rental Vehicle Industry Division, Auto Parts Recyclers Division, and Service Station and Convenience Store Association of Queensland. Nominations close 9th August 2019. Until next month, take care and stay safe.

Small change. Big future. Matthew Webster (46) has a long way to go before he hangs up his hat, but he can already picture his retirement. He plans to travel around Australia in a caravan with his wife — once he convinces her that it will be fun! Matt has spent his career in the motor trades and is well on his way to making sure he has enough super to see the country in comfort. He joined MTAA Super as an apprentice in 1989 and now works in an automotive training role in NSW. “I’m really happy I’ve been with MTAA Super. It’s the industry super fund for my trade and has been supporting careers in the automotive industry for over 25 years.” “I’m still a long way off retirement, but I do think about what I will do when I stop working and how I will support myself and my family.”

Matt, like many Australians, is not alone in his concern. Thanks to changing work patterns and increased life expectancy, many of us will spend close to a quarter of our lives as retirees. For some, the age pension alone or relying solely on your employer’s super contributions may not be enough. Leeanne Turner, CEO of MTAA Super, says it’s important that workers do what they can to help grow their super throughout their working lives. “Too many workers are hands-off with their super. Retirement can feel like a lifetime away, so it’s easy to put super on the back burner. But there are a lot of ways you can actively grow your super now.” She says one of the easiest and most effective ways is to make regular extra contributions.

“Small amounts can go a long way. Putting as little as an extra $10 per week into your super can add up to thousands over a 30+ year career.” “This is because of the compounding nature of superannuation. With super, you don’t just grow your employer and voluntary contributions, you also grow the investment returns on these contributions. Every dollar you add to your super account boosts your super’s earning capacity.” Ms Turner also adds that making extra contributions is easy. “It’s simple. Just ask your employer to set up a regular (pre-tax) salary sacrifice into your super, or make direct (after-tax) deposits into your super whenever you can afford to put a little aside.”

Brent Storey, Director, Sun City Motorcycles

Sun City Motorcycles, Townsville

MTA|Q&A Despite being such a solo activity, the motorcycle community is stronger than many others and few brands have built a culture of comradeship like Harley Davidson. Sun City Motorcycles has used their flagship Harley Davidson store to build on that culture and grow a thriving business for the motorcycling community of Townsville. From actively competing in and supporting community events through to providing a club house and activities for the Harley Owners Group (HOG), Sun City Motorcycles has been much more than just a place to buy a bike and have it serviced. Sun City Motorcycles Director Brent Storey takes great pride in his staff and their attention to customer service. Brent joined us recently to answer some questions about his business. . WILDE WORDS: LARA 16 | Motor Trader August 2019

LW: How does your choice of staff reflect your customer base? BS: When I first started in the industry

10 per cent of our customers were female. Over time that has changed with more and more women taking up riding motorcycles. Today approximately 30 per cent of our customers are female. As a result, we have employed staff who our customers can connect with. Today we have an even split of staff who are male and female, young and old.

LW: What is your focus when you take on new staff? BS: The first thing we do with new staff

is to get them using the products. If they don’t have a motorcycle licence, we support them to get one and then we get them out using the motorcycles. The best staff are the ones who love the product and talk to customers from a base of personal experience.

haven’t ridden before and don’t have their licence yet are both supported in the same way. We have a close relationship with Streetwise Motorbike Training who provide rider training and the Q-Ride course. LW: So you see your customers and your staff as having a lifelong relationship with your brand? BS: Very much. Once they are the proud owners of a new set of wheels, we work with them to build their confidence by inviting them to ride days and other community events. We also host our customers at the racetrack so they get to experience their new motorcycle at its fastest in a safe environment.

I was lucky enough to ride the Livewire in Nashville in 2015 when they first launched the concept. Very impressive, very fast.

LW: What is your background in the automotive industry? BS: I have always been an avid motorsport

enthusiast. I completed my trade as a motorcycle mechanic and spent some time working on the tools. Eight years ago, in 2011, my father Marc and I kicked off Sun

City Motorcycles with the establishment of the Harley-Davidson store. Since then we have added the Yamaha and Powersports divisions. A new workshop for the Yamaha store is being completed now to provide specialised servicing and repairs for our Yamaha customers.

LW: Are you hands on in the workshop today? BS: Very much so. Although the business

has grown to a point where I cannot always be on the tools, I still love serving customers. Every Friday morning, I do four hours in the workshop on retail customers’ bikes. It is my favourite part of the week.

LW: Who is your current team? BS: Sun City employs 20 local men

OODWOOD HOUSE IS a grand country pile – one of those glorious homes you might see in BBC television costume dramas or cinematic versions of Jane Austen novels. It’s more than 400 years old (at the least the original bits are) and is nestled in the 12,000-acre Goodwood estate. If you’re into horse racing, then you may know the name Goodwood from the racing festival held at the racecourse on the estate each year. However, if you’re into cars – and if you’re reading this then you most likely are – then the name Goodwood means a different type of racing.

“THERE ARE DEBUTS OF NEW CARS, FUTURE TECHNOLOGY EXPERIENCES, SUPERCAR AND FORMULA ONE PADDOCKS, AN ACTION SPORT ARENA WHERE VISITORS CAN TAKE IN STUNT SHOWS, E-GAMING ENTERTAINMENT...” Since 1993, the estate has been home to the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Built around a competitive hill climb competition, over the years the Festival has grown to be much more than just that and now more than 180,000 people gather each year to take in not only the hill climb but a range of automotive-related events. There are debuts of new cars, future technology experiences, supercar and Formula One paddocks, an action sport arena where visitors can take in stunt shows, e-gaming entertainment . . . it’s three days of immersive automotive fun and the festival has become one of the most important events on the calendars of both the auto industry and the car enthusiast. The 2019 Festival of Speed had plenty going on – some stunning new cars were revealed, and hill climb records tumbled. Here is Motor Trader’s pick of some of the highlights. DE TOMASO P72 DE TOMASO, THE Italian car maker now owned by Hong Kong-based Ideal Team Ventures, made quite a splash at Goodwood with the P72 supercar. An absolute stunner, the details on the P72 are somewhat sketchy – it’s a manual, rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car, has a carbon fibre monocoque chassis and some beautiful and luxurious interior touches. Reports suggest the P72’s power will come from a 780hp, 6.3-litre V12 that can be found in the Apollo IE supercar (Apollo is also owned by Ideal Team Venture). Just 72 of the P72 are to be made, and while it is expensive at a reported price of €750,000 ($AU1.2 million) it’s an attractive proposition for the deep-pocketed enthusiasts who might also consider the more exclusive offerings from McLaren, Bugatti, Ferrari, Pagani and others.

Lotus Evora GT4 Concept

LOTUS EVORA GT4 CONCEPT LOTUS PUT ON a good showing at the Festival of Speed, with the company’s stand home to a range of models, including the GT4 Concept race car. While the car was revealed earlier this year at the Auto Shanghai exhibition (reflecting Lotus’ current status as part of China’s Geely Group), at Goodwood the car turned up in the green and yellow livery of the company’s 1962 Lotus 25 Formula One car. A nice look. Powered by a 3.5-litre supercharged V6 generating 450hp, the Evora GT4 will be campaigning in the global GT series in 2020.

Radical Sportscars Rapture

RADICAL RAPTURE UK MANUFACTURER RADICAL Sportscars introduced its new flagship road-legal sports car, the Rapture at Goodwood. Built in accordance with the UK’s Individual Vehicle Approval framework to ensure its road-legal nature, the Rapture is also intended for European markets from launch, with homologation for worldwide territories to follow. Lightweight and aerodynamic, the Rapture has a 2.26-litre turbocharged EcoBoost engine, supplied by Ford and reworked by Radical Performance Engines, featuring an all-new turbo architecture and air induction system. The unit produces 350bhp and drive comes through a six-speed paddle-shift gearbox. A race car at heart, the Rapture’s cockpit incorporates two moulded racing seats, with integral headrests and multipoint harnesses. The dash offers an LCD display with data-logging functions, and there's a multi-function digital steering wheel. Rapture customers will benefit from a tailored track tuition package to ensure each gets the most out of the new machine. August 2019 Motor Trader | 27

Volkswagen ID.R

VOLKSWAGEN’S RECORD BREAKER THE VOLKSWAGEN ID.R all-electric sports car took on Goodwood’s hill climb course and proceeded to smash the all-time record. Driver Romain Dumas completed the 1.86-kilometre track in 39.90 seconds and in doing so, drove the 670hp EV broke the previous record, which had stood for 20 years, by 1.7 seconds. The ID.R has begun to set a very high bar at these types of events. In 2018, and again driven by Dumas, it set the outright record at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, setting a time of 7:57.148 becoming the first car to complete the climb in under eight minutes. And in June this year, it broke the

electric car record at the Nurburgring, setting a time of 6:05:336. At Goodwood, VW Motorsport modified the car for the shorter event – including using a smaller battery and different power output settings. Technology partner Bridgestone also supplied special tyres for the Goodwood run.

FORD GT MK II ANOTHER RACE CAR, the MK II Ford GT, made its debut at Goodwood. A trackonly car, the MKII was engineered independent of race series rules, regulations and limitations, and is powered by a 3.5-litre V6 EcoBoost engine developing 700hp. Performance innovation and improvements over the original GT race car include aerodynamic enhancements for added downforce, weight savings and chassis updates for better handling, as well as increased engine power.

LAND ROVER DEFENDER OFF-ROAD ENTHUSIAST will no doubt be rejoicing that the rugged Land Rover Defender will be making a return in 2020 after the model was shelved in 2016. We’ve known about it for a while, of course, but Land Rover continues to keep Defender under wraps, or at least nicely camouflaged. Airspeeder

AIRSPEEDER: THE FUTURE OF RACING? WHILE WE MAY THINK that racing is all about tyres on a track, Goodwood 2019 saw the unveiling of an altogether new type of motorsport called Airspeeder. Billed as a ‘thrilling airborne motorsport for a new generation of race fans’, Airspeeder will feature pilots/drivers piloting full-size electric quadcopters called Speeders. The global launch at Goodwood gave the world a chance to see what to expect when the first Airspeeder World Championship, featuring five teams and 10 pilots, gets underway in 2020. Airspeeder is a creation of Alauda Racing, an Australia company based in Sydney and founded by Matt Pearson in 2016. Alauda says it will use Airspeeder as a platform to 32 | Motor Trader August 2019

develop highly efficient and highly effective ‘flying cars’ for commercial use. Utilising high-strength and specifically engineered materials, including carbonfibre and alloys, the Speeders have been designed for performance racing. Initially, Alauda Racing will be the sole manufacturer, offering a chassis and body, battery technology and motors and standardised software. This will include the

companies own IP, including the safety and collision-avoidance systems. The Speeders are streamlined for reduced drag and high performance. Each Mk IV Speeder will be four metres long and will weigh roughly 250kg. They are propelled by eight 50kw motors driving 60-inch blades, with power provided by swappable 500kw battery packs which can provide full thrust for around 15 minutes. Airspeeder races will apparently take place under rules similar to Formula E, so each race is likely to involve around 30 minutes of action and include one pit-stop for a battery swap. The Mk IV Speeders that will eventually compete in the first Airspeeder Grand Prix, will begin manned demonstration flights in the Mojave Desert later this year. They are designed to reach speeds of up to 200km/h and offer a power-

to-weight ratio superior to a fighter jet. “This was a very emotional moment for those of us who have been involved in this project from the start, everyone at Alauda Racing and our partners and sponsors,” said Mr Pearson at the Goodwood unveiling. “After huge amounts of hard work, research, technical development and planning this formal unveiling – at an event as iconic as Goodwood – it feels as though all our dreams have become reality and Airspeeder has properly arrived. “This is just the start of our reach for the skies. Our vision sees not just the development of a unique sporting spectacle but also the start of a new industry, with flying cars built for competition providing an ideal environment for innovation and technical evolution. Just watch this space.” August 2019 Motor Trader | 33

MTAQ RACING TEAM TAKES TO THE TRACK AT THE SHANNONS NATIONALS

R

OUND THREE OF the Hyundai Series X3 Queensland championship was a bit closer to home in August with the race meeting being held at Queensland Raceway (QR) at Ipswich. A special event, the round was held in conjunction with the national Shannons series tour, which meant a bumper crowd turned up to enjoy two full days of action as several categories of race cars took to the track. The Friday practice day was also a bit special as, with QR being a short(ish) drive from the MTAQ Racing Team’s home base in south Brisbane, MTA Institute’s Operations Manager Marcello Riotto was able to bring the latest intake of the Institute’s prevocational students

38 | Motor Trader August 2019

out to the track to check out the work of the team. Part of the team’s mission is to introduce and educate students and apprentices to the motor racing side of the automotive industry and it was a good learning experience for everyone involved. As for the racing itself, it was another weekend of ups and downs for the team. QR has never been a hot track for the team, which has struggled to be competitive at the circuit in previous visits. However, the car has been lightning fast of late, and there was hope that might translate to some good results. Alas, cruel fate once more stepped in to hamper any hopes of a podium finish at what continues to be the team’s ‘bogey’ track. Qualifying was intense, but also showed

The racing was fast and furious at Queensland Raceway

“WE ONLY HAD A HALF-ADOZEN FLYING LAPS IN THE RACE BUT WAS STILL ABLE TO BURST THROUGH FROM 11TH TO 5TH TO BE RIGHT ON THE TAIL OF THE LEAD QUARTET WHEN THE RACE WAS FINISHED.” up the importance of team tactics. QR is effectively four long straights connected by a few hairpin turns and sweepers. Those long straights can be an advantage to those able to run close behind another car and use slipstreaming to gain top-end speed. With many of the teams running multiple cars, the practice of slipstreaming has taken hold for qualifying with team drivers working together to set some cracking qualifying times. It’s a sensible system if you can do it, and it works. For the MTAQ team – a one-car outfit – tyring to beat such tactics is difficult to say the least and although

the car was fast, a 9th place qualifying spot was the best that could be achieved. A good result considering, said MTAQ Racing Team driver David Wood. “We were left to ‘break’ our own air and produce a lap with no assistance,” said David. “I personally was very happy with the lap, but a bit disappointed that it didn't yield a better starting position. “Once we go racing, all bets usually are off and the team tactics dissipate a bit,” he added. “We were able to show our speed in Race One, advancing after getting blocked at the start and we ended lap one in 11th. The race was then brought under safety car to retrieve a car stuck in the gravel trap after a chaotic start. “We only had a half-a-dozen flying laps in the race but were still able to burst through from 11th to 5th to be right on the tail of the lead quartet when the race was finished. Had we not had the lengthy safety car interruption we would have been right in the mix.” A strong showing was confirmed by David setting a lap time under the August 2019 Motor Trader | 39

previous lap record and a massive 2.4 seconds better than the MTAQ team’s previous best at the QR circuit. In fact, everyone was quick, with four other cars also breaking the old lap record. A strong Race One showing built up hopes for Race Two but, once again, some terrible luck struck hard . . . literally.

“We made a great start,” said David. “But we got hit in turn one on the opening lap and the result was a puncture of our front left tyre. The driver that drove across us was deemed to be at fault and while it was not intentional on his part, it hurt us badly and meant that we failed to finish the race. The steering was also damaged and our opportunity to again challenge “OUR LITTLE TEAM IS for a win was thwarted. Auto Camp July 2019 cohort

AUTO CAMP DRIVING CAREERS IN AUTOMOTIVE

A

UTO CAMP IS an initiative of MTA Queensland, and one that has proved time and again to be a successful way to help high school students find their feet and decide what career they would like to pursue. The three-day, school holiday program is an opportunity for teenagers aged 14-17 to get an introduction to the automotive industry, learn new skills and gain insight into what a career in the motor trades can offer. The most recent Auto Camp, held in the July school holidays, was host to another fully booked class of enthusiastic students from schools across the greater Brisbane region. Blake Harrison (16) from St Paul’s School, is the son of MTA Queensland Director Grant Harrison and attended the latest Auto Camp with an automotive career in mind. 42 | Motor Trader August 2019

“I definitely want to work in the automotive industry, probably as a Light Vehicle Mechanic,” said Blake. “It’s something I’ve always had an inkling towards but doing Auto Camp has 100 per cent confirmed that I’m making the right decision.” Blake’s father has been working in the automotive industry since 1989 and after seeing the value of the Auto Camp, encouraged his son to complete the course in preparation for such a career move. “My dad encouraged me to sign up, almost as a prerequisite to a Certificate II and then later on to a Certificate III,” said Blake. “It’s been the perfect introduction to what I can expect, and it’s given me that extra bit of knowledge which will ultimately help me in the long run.” Codey Collins (14) from Rochedale State High School is another student Blake Harrison who has benefited from

Auto Camp students with trainer Anthony Bonaccorso

“I don’t necessarily want a career in the automotive industry, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed Auto Camp,” he said. “In particular, I’ve really enjoyed learning about the electronics, and knowing that I’m soldering and combining all these components which will result in a product is really fascinating. It’s something I haven’t done a lot of, but I really enjoy it and it’s certainly helped me figure out where my Codey Collins (L), Finlay Derry (centre back) with trainer Sam Quin (R) interests lie. If you have even the slightest interest in cars or engineering, I definitely recommend doing Auto attending Auto Camp. Camp. ” “I’m not entirely sure on the specifics “Absolutely,” added Blake. “It just opens of what I want to do as a career, but I your eyes to so many different aspects to definitely would like it to be with cars,” he the automotive industry that you didn’t said. “Auto Camp has made me go, ‘yep, even realise existed. this is something that I like doing and “My experience has only ever been from want to do more of ’. I’ve really enjoyed it. Auto Camp gives you a real mix of things to the front of a workshop where you often don’t get a glimpse into the back. But Auto do over the three days and learning about Camp kind of blows that wide open and the different aspects of the automotive gives you a chance to see what goes on industry has been really cool.” behind the scenes. There’s a lot of variables Whilst being an incredibly useful way you need to understand and if you’re not to help teens decide what they’d like to do too sure about what you want to do for when leaving school, Auto Camp is not your future, completing Auto Camp is just for students who are considering a great idea. If you’re a sceptic, just do it, you career in the automotive industry. It’s also have nothing to lose and it’s a really great perfect for teenagers who have an interest way to spend your holidays. An Eye on Innovation

KATHY WINKCUP CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER GENERAL MANAGER INNOVATION

A

T THE END of July, the respected research and analytics company J.D. Power revealed the results of its Mobility Confidence Index survey. Those results make for interesting reading as the global auto industry continues to develop the technologies that will make electric and self-driving vehicles the core of the world’s mobility future. 5,749 consumers were polled about self-driving vehicles and 5,270 about batteryelectric vehicles and there was a marked lack of confidence surrounding the future of both. On the Mobility Confidence Index’ 100-point scale, self-driving vehicles scored only 36 and battery-electric vehicles scored 55. Reasons for the low score for self-driving vehicles include concerns about tech errors, about vehicles being hacked, and the legal liability as a result of a collision. For electric vehicles, while the result was better, there were concerns about the availability of charging stations and, amongst other things, the usual suspects of vehicle range and price. You can read more about the Mobility Confidence Index HERE, but at least one takeaway from it would seem to be that much more work needs to be done to bring consumers along on the journey the industry is already travelling. While

46 | Motor Trader August 2019

it seems to run in the face of business norms that an industry be racing to develop products which consumers, at least to some degree, appear to not fully understand, it surely is inevitable, given the gigantic investments poured into their development, that EVs and self-driving cars, are where the future lies. We know that in some countries consumers have embraced EVs (in Norway, for example, EVs outsold petrol and diesel models in March this year with 58 per cent of sales), and so we know that given the right information and incentives, consumers will embrace this very big change. And that must be achieved here in Australia. We can’t be left behind. Too much is at stake. Being noisy about where we are headed as an industry, about the everimproving technology, about the benefits of future mobility, and about the great opportunities – social and economic – of getting stuck in and working to help develop that future, is what we should be doing.

OUT AND ABOUT As always, it has been a busy month for the team at MTAiQ. We attended the RACQ Motorfest event (which you can read more about on page 34) and were also represented at a Thought Leadership Evening at the University of Queensland that discussed the skills required in a future where artificial intelligence and automation will revolutionise industries. Also on the calendar was a networking night at Start-up Redlands, and the Queensland University of Technology Creative Enterprise Australia Collider Accelerator Demo Day – an event at which nine creative technology start-ups demonstrated their work following a threemonth intensive program in the company of industry specialists and entrepreneurs.

INNOV8 & PROTECT INDUSTRIES At the latest Innov8 Logan Meetup, MTAiQ Community Manager Nathan Nguyen, along with Lex van Cooten from VR and AR company Immerse Enterprises, delivered a presentation on the work of MTAiQ, and the future of mobility and our digital future (do an internet search on ‘Magicverse’ and be prepared for your jaw to drop as you start to understand terminology such as ‘spatial application layers’). The meetup took place at the HQ of Protect Industries, an automotive group that includes vehicle modification business Vogue Industries (you may have seen some of their remarkable modified vehicles at the MTAQ Cars and Coffee gatherings) Pomponazzi Surface Coatings, and Trakpro – a technology business that offers a vehicle data and analytics tracking system that is used by businesses across the south pacific region. The company is also developing an ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) system. That ADAS system is a very nifty piece of technology and was demonstrated by Alf Allman, Protect Industries’ general manager. A dual camera set up, it has one camera facing forward for collision avoidance with the other directed at the driver. The system utilises facial recognition tech to detect

any pertinent changes in the driver’s face that would suggest they are distracted or fatigued. It delivers a warning to the driver if they close their eyes for longer than normal, if they yawn, or if their attention is diverted. It’s very clever stuff and proof of the technological and innovative work that is going on in Queensland.

GOT AN IDEA? LET US KNOW!

At MTAiQ, we work hard to assist those already in the industry to adapt to the disruptions that are already here and those that will soon be on the way. Equally, we strive hard to help start-ups, entrepreneurs and those who have a potentially grand concept, get that idea off the ground and their business moving. The networks and contacts through government, industry, and academia that we have developed are what makes engaging with MTAiQ a natural fit for those working in the automotive field, and our work to combine innovations and practical solutions is what can make being part of the innovation hub such a rewarding experience. So, if you have an idea, method, device or solution to a problem that you believe could make a real difference to the industry as it evolves, then let us know. Because though there may be, as the J.D. Power survey suggests, still some way to go for change to be fully accepted and understood ies by the public, that change is on its Alf Allman, General Manager, Protect Industr way and now is the time to take the opportunities such change offers. As William Pollard, English physicist said: " Without change there is no innovation, creativity, or incentive for improvement. Those who initiate change will have a better CLICK opportunity to TO SUBMIT manage the change YOUR IDEA TO MTAIQ that is inevitable." We look forward to hearing from you. Until next time. FORD AND VW EXPAND COLLABORATION WITH EV AND AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE AGREEMENT

F

ORD AND VOLKSWAGEN are to expand their global alliance to include electric vehicles and will collaborate with Argo AI to introduce autonomous vehicle technology in the U.S. and Europe. VW is joining Ford in investing in Argo AI, an autonomous vehicle technology platform company. VWand Ford say they will independently integrate Argo AI’s Self-Driving System (SDS) into purpose-built vehicles. Argo AI’s focus will remain on delivering a SAE Level 4-capable SDS to be applied for

Volkswagen CEO Dr. Herbert Diess and Ford President and CEO Jim Hackett

ride-sharing and goods delivery services in urban areas. Ford and VW will have an equal stake in Argo AI and combined the two companies will own a substantial majority. Ford says it will also become the first additional automaker to use VW’s dedicated EV architecture and Modular Electric Toolkit – or MEB – to deliver a high-volume zero-emission vehicle in Europe starting in 2023. Ford expects to deliver more than 600,000 European vehicles using the

MEB architecture over six years, with a second all-new Ford model for European customers under discussion. VW started developing its MEB architecture in 2016. The company is planning to use the platform to build approximately 15 million cars for the Volkswagen Group in the next decade. For Ford, using VW’s MEB architecture is part of its more than $US11.5 billion ($AU17 billion) investment in electric vehicles worldwide. The alliance, which covers collaborations outside of Volkswagen and Ford’s joint investments in Argo AI, does not entail cross-ownership between the two companies and is independent from the investment into Argo AI. VW will invest $US2.6 billion ($AU3.8 billion) in Argo AI by committing $US1 billion ($1.42 billion) in funding and contributing its $US1.6 billion ($AU2.4 billion) Autonomous Intelligent Driving (AID) company, which has been developing self-driving technology for the Volkswagen Group. As part of the transaction, VW also will purchase Argo AI shares from Ford for $US500 million ($AU745 million) over three years. Ford will invest the remaining $US600 million ($AU893 million) of its previously announced $US1 billion ($1.49 billion) cash commitment in Argo AI. The full transaction represents a valuation for Argo AI of more than $US7 billion ($AU10.4 billion). “While Ford and Volkswagen remain independent and fiercely competitive in the marketplace, teaming up and working with Argo AI on this important technology allows us to deliver un-matched capability, scale and geographic reach,” said Jim Hackett, Ford President and CEO. “Unlocking the synergies across a range of areas allows us to showcase the power of our global alliance in this era of smart vehicles for a smart world.”

VOLKSWAGEN AUSTRALIA COMMITS TO TYRE RECYCLING PROGRAM VOLKSWAGEN’S AUSTRALIAN DEALERS are now committed to the responsible disposal of hundreds of thousands of used tyres annually in an agreement signed with Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA). The commitment will involve some 100 Volkswagen dealers nationwide, each of which will have used tyres disposed of by a TSA accredited collector or recycler. Volkswagen Australia joins Goodyear, Bridgestone, Continental, Pirelli, Michelin, Kumho, Toyo and Yokohama as a TSA member. Volkswagen Group Australia Managing Director Michael Bartsch said that the brand was the first auto importer to become a Tyre Stewardship Australia contributor. “Tyres are a by-product of the car sales business and the necessity to have used tyres responsibly disposed of or appropriately recycled is incumbent upon us,” said Mr Bartsch. “Through Tyre Stewardship Australia most of the major tyre brands are financially contributing to ensure that the environmental impact of their business is continually diminished. Volkswagen Australia is proud to be the first auto maker to become a TSA contributor. Our intention is to wherever possible deal only with tyre manufactures who are TSA co-signatories.” According to TSA, Australians discard the equivalent of 56 million tyres each year, which equates to some 450,000 tonnes of material, only 10 per cent of which is recycled locally. HYUNDAI UNVEILS CVVD ENGINE TECHNOLOGY

H

YUNDAI MOTOR GROUP has developed Continuously Variable Valve Duration (CVVD) technology to feature in future Hyundai and Kia vehicles. CVVD valve control technology regulates the duration of valve opening and closing according to driving conditions, achieving, Hyundai says, a 4 per cent boost in performance and a 5 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency. Emissions are claimed to be cut by 12 per cent. When the vehicle is maintaining a constant speed and requires low engine output, CVVD opens the intake valve from the middle to end of the compression stroke. This, Hyundai says, helps to improve fuel efficiency by reducing the resistance caused by compression. When engine output is high, such as when the car is driving at a high speed, the intake valve is closed at the beginning of the compression stroke to maximise the 54 | Motor Trader August 2019

amount of air used for the explosion, enhancing torque to improve acceleration. “The development of the CVVD technology is a good example how Hyundai Motor Group is strengthening our powertrain technology,” said Albert Biermann, President and Head of Research and Development Division at Hyundai Motor Group. “We will continue our innovation efforts to bring forth paradigm shifts and ensure sustainability of our business model.”

HYUNDAI MOTOR GROUP DEVELOPS ACTIVE SHIFT CONTROL FOR HYBRIDS

SMARTSTREAM G1.6 T-GDI ENGINE Hyundai’s new Smartstream G1.6 T-GDi Engine, a V4 gasoline turbo unit with 134kW and 265Nm of torque is the first to use the Group’s CVVD technology and also features Low-Pressure Exhaust Gas Recirculation (LP EGR) to further optimise fuel efficiency. The low-pressure system redirects the burnt emission gas to the front of the turbocharger compressor, rather than the intake system, to increase efficiency under the high load condition. The new Smartstream G1.6 T-GDi engine will be applied in the Hyundai Sonata Turbo, which is set for introduction in the second half of this year. This premiere will mark the first in a series of new Hyundai and Kia vehicles featuring the engine.

HYUNDAI MOTOR GROUP has also developed Active Shift Control (ASC) transmission technology, an innovation that the company says optimises transmission efficiency by monitoring gear shifts and precisely adjusting the transmission rotation speed for faster shift times. ASC technology allows the hybrid’s electric motor to also take control of gear shifts by applying new software logic to the Hybrid Control Unit (HCU) to mitigate issues with slower shift time. The HCU monitors the rotational speed of transmission with a sensor installed inside the electric motor at 500 times per second to quickly synchronise the rotational speed with that of engine. With the synchronisation, shift time is reduced by 30 per cent from 500ms to 350ms. This, Hyundai says, not only improves the hybrid vehicle’s acceleration performance and fuel economy, but also the durability of the transmission by minimising friction during gear shift.

THE LOTUS EVIJA: AN ALL-ELECTRIC HYPERCAR

T

HIS IS THE Evija, an all-electric monster from Lotus. Unveiled last month, the Evija sports some truly incredible performance numbers and is a hypercar in every sense of the word. The makers of some of the best sportscars in British motoring history have outdone themselves with this, their first foray Lotus Evija

into electric vehicles. Power output is an astonishing 1972hp, torque is 1700 Nm, 0-100km/h time is under three seconds. Acceleration from 100-200 km/h comes in less than three seconds, from 200-300 km/h in less than four seconds, and top speed is over 320km/h . . . staggering stuff. This potency comes via a 2000kW

lithium-ion battery - supplied with a management system by Williams Advanced Engineering (WAE) as part of a joint venture with Lotus – and four motors, one for each wheel, with a target power of 500PS (494hp) per motor. The battery pack is mid-mounted immediately behind the two seats and supplies energy directly to the four motors. This system is, Lotus claims, the lightest, most energy dense, electric power package ever fitted to a road car. Target weight for the Evija is 1,680 kg. The Evija features a one-piece carbon fibre monocoque chassis and some really inventive aerodynamic work to reduce „

drag and improve downforce. The cabin, from the fully adjustable race-style seats to the multi-function steering wheel, is as motorsport-inspired as you’ll find on a road car. The Evija has been designed with the future of EV charging in mind too with the battery having the ability to accept an 800kW charge. Although charging units capable of delivering this are not yet commercially available, when they are, Lotus says it will be possible to fully replenish the battery in just nine minutes. 64 | Motor Trader August 2019

Using existing charging technology – such as a 350kW unit – the Evija’s charge time will be 12 mins to 80 per cent and 18 mins to 100 per cent. The car’s range is 400km. Production of the Evija will be limited to no more than 130 examples - a tribute to the car’s project code of Type 130, the company says - and production will begin in 2020. Want one? You’ll need deep pockets. Deep enough to hold £1.7 million ($3 million). A £250,000 ($443,000) deposit secures a production slot.

MAKE: FORD MODEL: FALCON XL UTE YEAR: 1963 ENGINE: FORD BOSS 290 V8 OWNERS: ASHLEY AND CRAIG LARSEN

ALCON UTE

WORDS & PHOTOS: LINDSAY SAUNDERS

S

OME THINGS WERE just meant to be. Ashley and Craig Larsen, brothers and co-owners of Bridgestone Select Tyre & Auto in Coopers Plains, were looking for a special vehicle for their business - something to turn heads - and were thinking along the lines of a Mustang. But when they saw this 1963 Ford Falcon XL ute for sale, they knew it was the one. After all, what are the chances of finding a vehicle in just the right shade of orange to match Bridgestone’s own hue, that wasn’t far from home, and was ripe for turning into a one-of-a-kind project? About three years ago, the brothers, both self-avowed Ford fans, discovered the ute for sale in Wynnum and decided it was too good to pass up. “If it wasn’t orange, we wouldn’t have it. It’d be a ’73 Mustang,” laughed Ashley. “We weren’t particularly looking for a Falcon of this era but when we saw this in that shade, it had to be.” The ute had been subject to a partial restoration and modifications, but the ute as it is today is a far cry from when 68 | Motor Trader August 2019

it first arrived at Coopers Plains, as head mechanic Simon BrittonWagenknecht explained. “The ute had all the pinstriping shaved, and the tailgate shaved and deleted, and it was not a bad job either although there was a fair amount of rust,” he said. “It had a 250 Crossflow on gas in it with a standard diff and a fourspeed manual gearbox. “The diff gave up the ghost so we ordered a Falcon 9-inch diff from the Castlemaine Rod Shop in Victoria to strengthen it up and in the process of waiting for that to arrive decided to cut out the rust. “That ended up taking the better part of two years! The more we cut out the more we found.” During that process it was decided the front end needed strengthening so the Castlemaine Rod Shop was called again in for an all-new double wishbone front end

with disc brakes. “Originally we were going to go with a turbo six Barra engine but when we were doing the suspension and chassis set-up a Boss 290 V8 with a manual transmission behind it came our way. We decided to shoehorn that in,” Simon explained Shoehorned is right. While Falcons of this era are often recipients of sixes like the Barra, or smaller V8s like the Windsor, the bigger Boss simply doesn’t fit. At least, not easily. “As we’d redone the front end, the shock towers had been repositioned so it made fitting the Barra possible but not easy. The shock towers on the XL come inwards so you can’t fit a big V8 like the Boss with its 90-degree cylinder heads,” said Simon. “So all suspension went outbound and lower, we cut out the now obsolete shock towers, moved the firewall back, pumped

up the transmission tunnel and lifted the existing ‘bump’ on the bonnet slightly, all to accommodate the Boss. “The bonnet mod is pretty subtle. You wouldn’t notice it if you didn’t know. And that was the whole idea with this vehicle, it doesn’t give away what’s underneath.” In fact, that was a big part of the underlying brief from Craig and Ashley. “We wanted something that obviously looks a bit out of the ordinary but is still in line with what the XL looks like. We didn’t want anything sticking out of the bonnet or the like,” said Craig. “And it had to be street legal and safe so we can use it not only for promotional purposes - at shows and events - but also on the road, even to drop customers off at work while their own vehicles are in our workshop.” Frankly, what’s under the skin of this ute is amazing, not only for the components but also for the skill and lateral thinking Craig and the workshop team used to create it. For example, getting that sizeable V8 into a space it shouldn’t fit into required some clever solutions. August 2019 Motor Trader | 69

“It has a BA brake booster and master cylinder but there was no room for that cylinder, so I flipped it upside down and created a remote reservoir,” said Simon. “No-one, including a brake specialist, knew if it would work, but it did. “Every brake line was custom built by me, and they are all double flared and are banjo lines.” The ute has power steering, disc brakes all round and a T56 five-speed transmission from a BA XR8, as well as a custom tail-shaft fabricated by Hardy Spicer at Darra. Another local firm, Extreme Engineering at Archerfield, did the exhaust work, creating custom headers to fit the tight space available, as well as a custom fuel tank with surge cell. The wiring harness, sourced from a BA, was sorted by the Castlemaine Rod Shop, who deleted the unneeded items including the ABS and traction control. This process created a new puzzle for Simon to solve. “The speedo in modern cars isn’t

70 | Motor Trader August 2019

connected to the gearbox, it comes from the ABS wheel speed sensors. So no ABS means no speedo,” he said. “I had to work out a way to get a speed reading for the Dakota digital dash we’ve installed. My solution was a GPS module that’s plugged into the dash. “We also installed a tacho box that talks to the digital dash too.”

The digital display is contained within the original dash and includes all displays, even the high and low beam indicators, which are still operated by the original floor-mounted foot switch. Other hi-tech items include a proximity key, keyless start. and remote start so you can fire up the mighty Boss from outside the ute. There’s coil-over suspension front and rear, with a custom triangulated falling rear end designed by Simon. And for a Bridgestone business’ ute, what else would be on the road than their own rubber - 295/30R18s on the rear creating 11 inches of rubber each side, and 205/40R18s on the front as there’s not a lot of room between the engine bay and guards. The Foose Legend rims work well with the XL too, updating the look without looking at all out of place. Keeping it looking like a ’63 is the retention of the ute’s bench seat, albeit with four-point racing harnesses on both sides. While the ute is now on the road, there’s still a few things to be done, including a Varex mufflers system with custom set-up

under the dash to make it loud or quiet, and it’s likely a tonneau cover will be added too. “We wanted to get a few kilometres on it and see how it all goes, so we will be doing a few more things as we go,” said Simon. The result so far, after three years and, the brothers estimate, around 500 manhours, is literally a one-of-a-kind vehicle. “There’s no other street registered ’63 XL ute with a Boss in it that we’ve been able to find,” said Ashley. “It is a real showcase for Simon and the team to display the level of work they can do,” added Craig. “You would usually go to a custom specialist for this kind of work, to create this kind of vehicle. But it was all done in house by the same guys who will service your family car. “There’s no workshop manual for this kind of project and the job Simon and the guys have done is incredible.”

HOLDEN TO BRING NEW CORVETTE DOWN UNDER

H

OLDEN HAS CONFIRMED that the next generation mid-engine Corvette will be built in right-handdrive (RHD) and will be for sale in Australia. The new Corvette is the first production version in mid-engine configuration. It is also the fastest, most powerful entrylevel Corvette. The Corvette is powered by Chevy’s nextgeneration naturally aspirated 6.2L Small Block V8 LT2 engine. It will produce 495hp (369 kW) and 470 lb-ft (637 Nm) of torque when equipped with performance exhaust — the most horsepower and torque for any entry level Corvette. 0-100km/h will be under three seconds with a performance package installed. The LT2 is paired with Chevrolet’s first eight speed dual-clutch transmission – designed with TREMEC. “The news that Corvette will now be built in right-hand-drive for the first time ever – and will be exported to Australia – is hugely exciting for our team at Holden and 74 | Motor Trader August 2019

any Australian who loves high performance cars,” said Dave Buttner, chairman and managing director of Holden. “With our long history in motor racing, performance vehicles are an indelible part of the Holden brand. Our team is totally revved up to build on Holden’s performance legacy with the most technologically advanced Corvette ever built. “We look forward to taking on the European and Japanese performance vehicles with some highly sophisticated American muscle.”

The Corvette benefits from GM’s new digital vehicle platform, an all-new electronic architecture that enables the adoption of the company’s next generation of technologies. The company says that the architecture minimises wiring while allowing for faster signal transmission between different vehicle systems and the higher resolution screens, and also enables enhanced cyber security measures. The Corvette’s exterior certainly places it more in line with the European supercars with which it is designed to compete. The mid-engine layout gives it proportions akin

to Ferraris and others, and that high bar is clearly in Holden and GM’s sights. “As America’s most iconic performance nameplate, redesigning the Corvette from the ground up presented the team a historic opportunity, something Chevrolet designers have desired for over 60 years,” said Mike Simcoe, Vice President of Global Design, General Motors. “It is now the best of America, a new arrival in the mid-engine sports car class. We know Corvette can stand tall with the best the world has to offer.” Production will begin later this year. August 2019 Motor Trader | 75

BMW says the range of functions will be expanded with updates available through smartphone or in-car Remote Software Upgrade. An M Sport package or Luxury Line package is available.

VOLKSWAGEN’S AUSTRALIAN DEALERS are committing to the responsible disposal of hundreds of thousands of used tyres annually in an agreement signed with Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA). “Our intention is to wherever possible deal only with tyre manufactures who are TSA co-signatories.” According to TSA, Australians discard the equivalent of 56 million tyres each year, which equates to some 450,000 tonnes of material, only 10 per cent of which is recycled locally. TSA has 1600 accredited retailers, recyclers and collectors working together to ensure end of life tyres are managed in an environmentally sound manner. August 2019 Motor Trader | 77

GENERAL MANAGER MTA INSTITUTE

I

RECENTLY CAME ACROSS some interesting data regarding apprentice and trainee completions. That data showed things headed in the wrong direction. According to the latest figures from the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER), completion rates for apprentices and trainees have shown a significant fall. The 2018 completion rates for all apprentices and trainees (who commenced training in 2014) fell to 56.7 per cent, down from 59.9 per cent for those commencing in 2013. This information intrigued me, so I dug a little more, specifically around the automotive numbers, and it was interesting to note completion rates for individuals in automotive and engineering trades, who commenced in these trade occupations in 2014, were up 0.3 per cent to 61.3 per cent. It was the only trade area were there was an increase in completions! I know there are so many variables behind stats but, on the face of it, it was good to see an increase in individuals completing their automotive trades. On the other side to this was data that

showed 30.3 per cent of all apprentices and trainees (not just those in automotive) who commenced their training contract in 2013 cancelled/withdrew within the first year. This, sadly, has always been an issue for individuals entering the trade and sometimes it just comes down to the lack of exposure a person has to the industry before undertaking an apprenticeship. This is where we have been trying to help help through programs such as MTAQ Auto Camp and MTAI Automotive Vocational Preparation programs. These programs provide an upfront insight into automotive trades and allow individuals to see what it’d be like to work in the industry. Obviously, if they do like it, they will stay on in their apprenticeship through their first year, which is a win for employer and apprentice alike. Now, let's go from the high-level stats to the people on the ground. The Queensland Training Awards were recently held across Queensland and the MTA Institute was represented well in the regions with Jack Goodrich, Shauna Milne and Symon Meer Axton in the running for Apprentice awards, as well as Terry Palfrey for the VET Trainer award. Whilst we didn’t win, they all represented the MTA Institute to an extremely high standard.

APPRENTICE: JESSE WEATHERHEAD

APPRENTICESHIP: AUTOMOTIVE BODY REPAIR TECHNOLOGY

J

ESSE WEATHERHEAD IS the Apprentice of the Month for July 2019. The 22-year-old Automotive Body Repair Technology apprentice is in his fourth year of training and is due to complete in November. Being at Atherton Smash means Jesse is working at one of the most advanced smash repair shops in north Queensland – a tremendous grounding for any aspiring tradesperson– and according to his trainer Shane Palmer and employers Stephen and Karen West, Jesse has taken full advantage of the opportunity, proving himself to have a great attitude and able to reach the high standards the business expects. “Jesse is willing to undertake repair work no matter how big the job,” said Shane. “He has a great relationship with colleagues

and his employer, is always attentive and shows great detail and pride in his work.” A career in automotive was always on the cards for Jesse. He has been involved in stock car racing since he was a child and the rough and tumble of that category means he has been doing mechanical and body repairs for a long time. “I’ve worked on cars all my life, fixing engines on the stock cars and that sort of jazz,” he said. “My dad and brother were involved, and I got into it when I was about 12. I actually still have the car I started with – it has a Corvette body over an HQ chassis – but it needs a new motor and is in a bit of a pickle at the moment. “One of my mates was working here and he told me they were looking for an apprentice and asked if I'd be interested in coming for an interview. And that was that. "I do a bit of everything here – pulling stuff apart, changing quarter panels, using the car-o-liner for straightening chassis – and we work on everything from trucks to Mercedes, so there’s plenty of variety.” Jesse added that Atherton Smash is where his future lies once he has qualified. “I’ll definitely stay here,” he said. “It’s a great place to work. I’m not going anywhere anytime soon!”

AGE NO BARRIER TO DOUG’S APPRENTICESHIP SUCCESS

T

HERE IS MUCH to celebrate at the end of an automotive apprenticeship. It’s an immense achievement that requires four (or more) years of dedication to theory and practical education, hard work and often long and tiring hours. The challenges that come with completing an automotive apprenticeship make the end result that much sweeter. But when you have the added challenge of being a mature-aged student from a

remote Queensland town, the achievement is remarkable. Doug Hayes from Central Garage Cambooya, is that remarkable student. Owned by Bill Hyder, Central Garage Cambooya is located in a small town approximately 25 kilometres south of Toowoomba. It’s here that 30-year-old Doug recently celebrated the completion of his Light Vehicle Mechanical Apprenticeship through MTA Institute. “I’ve been working with Bill for MTA Institute Senior Trainer Zak Zuiderduin over 11 years,” said Doug. “Four years ago, he offered to put me through my apprenticeship and despite some of the challenges I knew I’d face I had his support, so “IT WAS A REAL PLEASURE I decided to give it a go. Jack Goodrich at the Century Batteries Ipswich SuperSprint

MTAQ APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR RACES TO NEW HEIGHTS

H

AVING THE OPPORTUNITY to work up close with Supercars is something a lot of people dream about but few achieve. For Jack Goodrich, the 2018 MTA Queensland Apprentice of the Year, that dream has come true. Thanks to MTA Queensland’s corporate partner MTAA Super and their connection to Triple Eight Race Engineering, Jack was awarded the amazing opportunity to work with the famed Supercars outfit as part of his 2018 Apprentice of the Year award win. The award prize included a money-can’tbuy, two-week work experience stint at the workshop of Triple Eight Race Engineering and to be part part of the team’s pit crew at 92 | Motor Trader August 2019

“IT MEANS EVERYTHING . . .

THIS IS SOMETHING THAT PEOPLE ALL OVER AUSTRALIA DREAM OF AND I FEEL VERY PRIVILEGED TO BE HERE.” the Century Batteries Ipswich SuperSprint Supercars event on the weekend of 26-28 July. It was an opportunity that Jack grabbed with both hands. “It means everything,” he said of the Triple Eight opportunity. “This is something that people all over Australia dream of and I feel very privileged to be here. I’ve had the opportunity to ask plenty of questions and

do some technical tasks. It’s one of those things where I want to lap up everything because it’s something that I might never be able to do again. Just to see the workshop and the cars is pretty incredible and it means a lot. I’m very thankful to everyone involved in giving me this experience.” It’s an experience that a few short years ago Jack probably wouldn’t have envisioned. His pathway to the automotive industry was fairly unorthodox and prior to entering the motor trades, he had graduated from university with a Bachelor of Science and Arts with his final year of study spent completing an honours degree in stem cell research at the Australian Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology at the University of Queensland. Whilst he had every intention of completing the PhD, he felt the career didn’t suit him and after deciding a trade was much more connected to the life he had pictured for himself, he began his life in automotive as a mature-aged apprentice at Twidale

Auto & Motorcycles in Goondiwindi. He has since completed his apprenticeship and now works at Glen Aplin Autos in Stanthorpe as a light vehicle mechanic. It’s safe to say that the workshop at Triple Eight Race Engineering is worlds away from the regional, family-run businesses to which he has become accustomed. “Triple Eight Race Engineering is very different to my normal day-to-day working life. For one thing, it’s a lot cleaner!” he laughed. “The facilities are amazing and although it is automotive, it feels like a different industry. Some of the guys here have never worked on road cars before, they’ve always been about racing, which is pretty incredible. “When I told my colleagues what I was doing, they were somewhere between astounded and impressed. They know how valuable this experience is, even if it is just work experience, as you learn so many new things and I’m very thankful to Orazio and Lissa, my bosses at Glen Alpin Autos, for August 2019 Motor Trader | 93

supporting me doing this.” The accolades brought on from his outstanding work as an MTA Institute apprentice are yet to slow down for Jack. In addition to being named the Apprentice of the Year, MTA Queensland also nominated him for the Queensland Training Awards Harry Hauenschild Apprentice of the Year, and Jack was one of the finalists for the Darling Downs region. The award, which recognises outstanding VET students from across Queensland, is one MTA Queensland felt Jack truly deserved. “It means a hell of a lot,” he said. “It would never be something I would nominate for myself, but I guess it recognises that I’ve tried to do my best, so it certainly means a lot. It was a real honour to be up against other current or recently qualified apprentices who are outstanding in their field.” Although a humble chap, Jack has excelled in automotive and will undoubtably continue to do so whatever he decides to do. Perhaps, after his experience at Triple Eight Race Engineering, he may venture into

motorsport. If his experience at the Ipswich SuperSprint is anything to go by, that could well be true. As it turned out, the Ipswich Supercars event proved to be one of the more successful outings for the Triple Eight/ Red Bull Holden team this season. Jamie Whincup was victorious in the first race of the weekend, while teammate Shane van Gisbergen put up a brilliant fight in the second race only to be pipped at the line by championship leader Scott McLaughlin. It was not a bad way for Jack to see in his first ever weekend working in Australia’s premier motorsport category. The SuperSprint was, said Jack, a

fantastic experience. “I had an absolute ball,” he said. “I had no idea what to expect, but being in the workshop in the week leading up to the event did help me to settle in. “And it was great that Jamie (Whincup) got first place in Saturday’s race and Shane (van Gisbergen) got second on the Sunday. Everyone was stoked at their performance, so it was a good race to be at since they did so well!” While a newly qualified mechanic wouldn’t get thrown in at the deep end of a Supercar garage and be expected to work on the nitty gritty technical details, there was still plenty of work for Jack to do. “I spent a lot of time cleaning rims and wheels, helping to keep the engine and brakes cool by fitting a fan onto the air intakes, making sure the windscreen was clean, the grille was clear, making sure everyone got the tyres they needed, things like that,” he said. “There was nothing too crazy, but the entire team was great, and the mechanics would throw as much technical stuff at me as they could. “You do your best and help the best you

can, and everybody really made me feel welcome and that was fantastic.” For the moment then, Jack will head back to Stanthorpe and Glen Alpin Autos to continue to develop his knowledge and skills, but motorsport might play a part in his future career. “I’d love to work in this industry. It’s something I’ve never been exposed to before but, for me, it’s definitely the most challenging and interesting automotive sector there is,” he said. “When you get to work in a place like this, it puts the whole industry into perspective. I guess the sky’s the limit if I really put myself out there, and I’m going to have to think about where I want to go in the future and make sure I’m not wasting the opportunity I’ve been given here, because it really is precious. “And I really do need to thank everyone for allowing me to have the opportunity to experience working with Triple Eight,” he added. “A massive thanks goes out to MTAA Super for helping to set up this experience, and to MTA Queensland in general for all the support. I have really appreciated everything they’ve has done for me. August 2019 Motor Trader | 95

ITH LUXURY CAR maker Bentley celebrating its centenary this year, the company has unveiled one of the most arresting concepts of recent times – the EXP 100 GT. Relatively light in weight (1900kg) thanks to extensive use of aluminium and carbon fibre, the Grand Tourer – hence the GT – is an all-electric piece of luxury offering an autonomous driving feature and represents Bentley’s look at just where its future may be in an electrified future. At 5.8m long and nearly 2.4m wide, it’s big (but still only a two-door) and loaded up with the usual mix of high-tech wizardry

and olde worlde-style goodies. There are copper accents; by-products of winemaking are used to create a leather-like seating material which is 100 per cent bio-based; and Riverwood (a sustainable wood from

naturally fallen trees) is in there too. Nice. Paired to these traditional, eco-friendly, features is an AI system – the Bentley Personal Assistant - that works to keep the driver and passengers comfortable using biometrics and, the company says, it can even detect the driver’s blood pressure. It can alter the amount of light in the cabin, the temperature and other settings. Powering all this will be a battery electric powertrain that will give the concept some real oomph. Bentley says that next generation traction will enable maximum control via torque vectoring, applying 50 per cent increased power and

35 per cent less mass for more effective cornering. The battery system will power four motors that offer a 0-100 km (0-60 mph) time of less than 2.5 seconds, a top speed of 300 kph (186 mph) and maximum torque of 1,500 Nm. The company claims that future battery technology will offer five times the conventional energy density and charging the EXP 100 GT to 80 per cent of capacity will be done in 15 minutes. Charging is automatically taken care of by the Bentley Personal Assistant and a range of 700 km (435 miles) will be possible. August 2019 Motor Trader | 103
