ELLO AND WELCOME to the June 2019 edition of Motor Trader. Our cover photo this month comes from the MTAQ Cars & Coffee event that returned in May and attracted a tremendous turnout of enthusiasts and their cars. From classics to exotics (including that extraordinary modified Lambo on the cover, courtesy of Vogue Industries), there was a wonderful collection on show and the event turned into the biggest and best since it was first held last year. Turn to page 28 for a look at some of the cars that turned up to bask in the morning sunshine! In our main feature this month, we have an article from the UK that takes a look at some well-known celebrities and the passion they share for motorbikes and cars.

Motor Trader is the official publication of the Motor Trades Association of Queensland. The role of Motor Trader is to inform members of current issues and legislation affecting the industry. As such it can be regarded as the business magazine for the Queensland motor industry. The role of Motor Trader is not to be in competition with the technical magazines already on the market. It will advise of new vehicles being released and of the latest technology incorporated into them; it will advise of latest technology affecting members in each of the MTA Queensland Divisions; it will keep members abreast of the latest in motor industry training and industrial affairs; and it will keep members informed of the latest technical aids available through MTA Queensland Member Services, which will assist members in staying ahead of the technological revolution presently being encountered within the motor industry. From the Desk of the CEO
BRETT DALE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER MTA QUEENSLAND
I
T IS THE that time of year when we take the opportunity to stocktake, to reflect on previous activities and goals gained and lost, and forward plan for next financial year’s budget and commitments. The automotive value chain over the past three years has been beset by technological and digital challenges impacting business operations, skill demands and differing consumer sentiments. It has been the foresight of successive MTA Queensland Boards with the vision to position the Association in the vanguard with strategic reforms and policies to transition the motor trades through the revolutionary technological and digital changes. Credit is due to the corporate office for delivering on the Board’s decisions encapsulated in the Strategic Plan. The challenge now is to stay the course and not waiver in pursuing understandings of the emerging technologies, business models and services that inform members of current and future innovations and industry developments. We’ll continue to build on the current stakeholder collaborations which include government agencies, academia, corporations on the broad range of industry issues and factors that will influence decisions relating to
4 | Motor Trader June 2019
mobility and business operations. Vital is the advocacy on the viewpoints, policies and issues of members to influence considerations or decision making relative to the motor trades, which the Association has done for some ninety years. This aligns with a central MTA Queensland constitutional object ‘to advocate, advance, protect the interests of employers connected with the motor vehicle industry and associated trades or businesses in Queensland.’ Successive MTA Group scorecards indicate that this goal is being achieved. I must add too, the profile of the Association has increased exponentially judging from website social media interest and the broad range of invitations to participate in industry panels, fora, roundtables and conferences. For the upcoming financial year, the emphasis will be to increase corporate office interaction with members in their businesses and deliver service excellence. This aligns with the priority strategy under the 2019-21 Strategic Plan where the core of the Association is its membership. I am pleased to say that within the corporate office there is the culture that recognises members and clients as that core. Membership is decentralised and diverse. In a period of technological and digital change and challenging economic and environmental circumstances it is essential to know and understand the views and requirements of individual members. This must be beyond that provided by Divisional Committees, or visits from Area Managers or those who seek advice on issues that range from licences, training or industrial relations. In the coming year, one-onone consultations or interactions with individual members will be increased to enhance the relationship and information
“FOR THE UPCOMING FINANCIAL YEAR, THE EMPHASIS WILL BE TO INCREASE CORPORATE OFFICE INTERACTION WITH MEMBERS IN THEIR BUSINESSES AND DELIVER SERVICE EXCELLENCE. THIS ALIGNS WITH THE PRIORITY STRATEGY UNDER THE 2019-21 STRATEGIC PLAN WHERE THE CORE OF THE ASSOCIATION IS ITS MEMBERSHIP.” between the corporate office and members. This will build on the individual contacts we had with our Townsville region membership who endured the recent monsoonal flood. Additionally, the conversation with members will allow us to hear views on the services provided by our corporate partners. I draw members attention to Kellie Dewar’s Viewpoint, where she advises that the MTA Queensland has been selected as one of fifteen industry associations designated as Small Business Digital Champions under the Australian Government’s Small Business Digital Champions Project. Integral to this project is the one-on-one interactive services to discuss digital resources.
CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES Recently I visited the Gold Coast to meet with Telstra personnel to understand the connection to 5G technology and its application to autonomous/connected motor vehicles and industry in general. The electrification of motor vehicles (EVs) whether it’s battery electrics or
plug-in hybrids, each EV car needs to be connected to the web. This maybe to monitor battery levels and charging status, searching for charging stations and smart route planning. 5G technology has the capacity to streamline the existing ‘clunky’ connections ensuring motor vehicle safety and efficiency. Further discussions will follow with Telstra in the near future. In September 2018’s from the desk of the CEO, I mentioned the Association was member of the Queensland Electric Vehicle Committee (QEVC) at the request of the Minister for Transport and Main Road Mark Bailey. Recently, the Committee met for the second time. Under discussion was the ‘state of play’ document developed by the department to provide background information on EV uptake – both local and nationally – and QEVC’s priorities. I share with members some interesting data circulated: • EVs in the government fleet are targeted to double each year, to 288 electric vehicles by 2022. This effort will increase the number of electric vehicles available in the used EV market over the coming years, as these government vehicles are auctioned off. • The registration fee for fully electric passenger vehicles registered in Queensland is $298.30 for 12 months – excluding compulsory third-party insurance. • Registration duty for electric and hybrid vehicles (under $100,000) is set at 2% and receive a 1% discount when over $100,000. The Queensland Automotive Dealer Division Chair James Sturgess, at the last MTA Board meeting, briefed Directors on the energy solutions and the financial benefits accruing to businesses from renewable power sources. He cited his dealership’s investment in a solar and June 2019 Motor Trader | 5
From the desk of the CEO smart battery rooftop power station from a leading Australian renewable energy engineering company providing clean energy solutions. The outcome of the solar panel system utilising roof space, and with a lease secured by a power purchase agreement, was cash flow positive from the first day. To investigate options for industry around reduced energy cost and generating and distributing renewables the Board agreed to pursue the initiative. The state bodies in each of the jurisdictions have issues in common relating to technological and digital transformations, mobility, skills delivery and demand and the proposed retail automotive industry code of conduct. The general practice is to collaborate when possible to discuss issues pertinent to the automotive value chain. Recently, I met with the Victorian Automotive Chamber of Commerce (VACC) and MTA South Australia. Meetings are being scheduled with MTA New South Wales, MTA Western Australia and the Northern Territory. To emphasise the policy priorities addressed to the major political parties prior to the federal election, I’ll be seeking meetings with key cabinet and shadow cabinet appointments. The policy areas in which there is high interest relate to skills demand and the training regime. The policy tendency is for private RTOs to be submerged within the Vocational Education and Training (VET) framework, yet they do the heaving lifting. For example, Technical and Further Education (TAFE or public providers) received around 72 per cent of government funding in 2017 and trained about 49 per cent of total government-funded VET students. NonTAFE providers received about 28 per cent of government funding and trained just over half of government-funded students. Other issues to be pursue will include 6 | Motor Trader June 2019
the development of the industry code of conduct and the franchisee agreements between dealers and manufacturers.
AND THE LAST THING The MTA Institute (MTAI) Board of Directors Chairman Ian Lawrence will retire on 30 June 2019, having presided over the Board for almost five years. His stewardship coincided with significant policy reforms within the VET sector and automotive technology changes requiring the training curricula to meet the demands of both students and employers. The MTAI was the beneficiary of his entrepreneurial knowledge and leadership of large educational businesses. Ian’s valued service, leadership and outstanding contributions will be recognised following next Board meeting when there will be a special farewell function. The MTA Queensland Board appointed Rod Camm to the role of MTAI Board of Director’s Chairman which he will assume from 1 July 2019. Rod is professionally recognised for leadership across international, national and state VET systems. His solid credentials include experience in policy development and tertiary education leadership and operating at the executive and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) levels of government agencies, statutory bodies, government owned corporations and private sector organisations. His CEO experience includes organisations such as the Australian Council for Private Education and Training, Skills Queensland and Construction skills Queensland. We welcome Rod and look forward to his stewardship. Until next month, as Henry Ford, the industrialist and the founder of the Ford motor company said, ‘execute ideas with enthusiasm . . . as it is the bottom of all progress’.

N MARCH 2019, a ‘green team’ was established to support Key Strategy 2 in the Strategic Plan 2019-2021 and to action our commitment to the Corporate Social Responsibility Statement in the same document. The team’s objective is to develop and apply practices and procedures that would lessen the MTA Group’s environmental footprint and is made up of staff that span across all aspects of the business. Core strategies focus on actions to minimise the use of resources for all business and training objectives. Some actions are relatively minor, but the totality of the measures have had the effect of avoiding, reducing and offsetting impacts on the corporate office environment. Achievements abound, such as echo bins for recycling; paperless meetings; recycling oils, batteries, copper, metals, fluids, tyres, paint/panel; and ride/share and car-pool for meetings where possible. The challenge for the ‘green team’ is to achieve more such as the utilisation of the water tanks under the building, limiting printing and improving recycling in the workshop.
SMALL BUSINESS DIGITAL CHAMPION 8 | Motor Trader June 2019
The Association recognised in advance that digitisation would impact the automotive value chain and undertook actions to inform members of the digital transformations underway. We did this through the series of Carmageddon symposiums, including engaging with academia to gain understanding of the effects on business models to impart to members. These and other efforts resulted in MTA Queensland, as an industry association, being selected as one of 15 Small Business Digital Champions under the Australian Government’s Small Business Digital Champions Project. Its purpose is to promote the benefits of ‘going digital’ to their respective memberships. This may include advice on technology trends and technology adoption of: hardware, software, digital training, online content development, online digital planning and coaching support. The project to establish ‘a trusted digital advisory service extends across two years for which, under the contract, the Association will receive $50,000 each year. It’s a free service to members. A requirement under the contract is to prepare, construct and deliver website and online content that is about digital transformation. A website is under construction, and additionally, the Weekly industry Bulletin will provide members with broad a range of digital advice and information. This will include: technology trends and technology adoption, hardware, software and online content etc. I encourage members to seek this section out both on the designated website and in the Weekly Industry Bulletin. The digital advisory service content will be accessible from the DIGITAL CHAMPIONS button on the front of our website. which links to: www.mtaq.com.
“THESE AND OTHER
EFFORTS RESULTED IN MTA QUEENSLAND, AS AN INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION, BEING SELECTED AS ONE OF 15 SMALL BUSINESS DIGITAL CHAMPIONS UNDER THE AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT’S SMALL BUSINESS DIGITAL CHAMPIONS PROJECT. ITS PURPOSE IS TO PROMOTE THE BENEFITS OF ‘GOING DIGITAL’ TO THEIR RESPECTIVE MEMBERSHIPS.” au/small-business-digital-resources/ In addition, as a condition of the contract, some 200 members can expect to receive one-on-one interactive services (via face to face meetings/direct email/ phone/live webchat/webinar/face to face workshops) during each six-month period. Group Chief Executive Officer Brett Dale said the Association’s role in delivering the service would be crucial in bringing automotive small businesses up-to-speed on the digital resources required to be successful in this era of technology. This was particularly relevant when ‘only 50 per cent of Australian businesses having a website and even less use business processing software for accounting and invoicing’.
DIGITAL HEALTH SURVEY Our first action as a small business digital champion industry association is undertaking an assessment of the digital needs of the automotive industry. This is in the form of a digital health survey which will help us evaluate the needs of members. It is not time consuming: it will
take just 60 seconds. By participating you will contribute to us developing the best digital advice to you. The link for the survey is: www.mtaq. com.au/digital-health-check-survey/ Whilst thinking about small business programs and grants, the Queensland State Budget will be tabled on Tuesday, 11 June. The long-standing practice is for the Association to submit a pre-budget submission, outlining the priorities for the automotive value chain. It is on the website for member’s interest. A component of the State Budget is the Advancing Small Business Queensland Strategy. This was established 2016 and incorporates grant programs that are advantageous to business. These include the Small Business Digital Grants Program, and Small Business Entrepreneur Grants Program. We support the continuation of these programs as they have the potential to be advantageous to automotive value chain sector.
AUSTRALIAN FINANCIAL COMPLAINTS AUTHORITY (AFCA) Recently I attended a roundtable hosted by the AFCA to inform of its role to help small businesses resolve complaints about financial products and services. These complaints may derive from financial firms, including banks, credit providers, insurance companies, financial and investment advisers and superannuation funds. The only requirement for AFCA to deal with the complaint is that the financial firm must be a member of AFCA. With over 37,000 members it seems most issuers of financial products and services are members. To check if a specific financial firm is a member, the website is: afca.org.au/find-a-financial-firm June 2019 Motor Trader | 9
Policy/Viewpoint “IN THE INSTANCE OF SMALL BUSINESS, UNRESOLVED COMPLAINTS LODGED WITH AFCA MAY ORIGINATE FROM SOLE TRADERS AND PARTNERSHIPS AND SMALL BUSINESSES WITH LESS THAN 100 EMPLOYEES (INCORPORATED OR UNINCORPORATED).
In the instance of small business, unresolved complaints lodged with AFCA may originate from sole traders and partnerships and small businesses with less than 100 employees (incorporated or unincorporated). AFCA can consider complaints about small business credit facilities up to $5 million. For most matters, a complaint must be lodged with AFCA within six years of the complainant first becoming aware of the problem, or within two years of a response from the financial firm. From 1 July 2019, for a period of 12 months, AFCA can consider complaints back to 1 January 2008, based on its current scope and thresholds rather than those applying at the time. AFCA can consider a broad range of complaints extending from errors in banking transactions and credit listings to inappropriate investment advice. Threshold limits and compensation caps apply. For a claim relating to a credit facility, the compensation amount limit per claim is $1 million for small businesses. Most other claims (excluding superannuation), the compensation amount limit per claim is $500,000. To discuss a financial complaint or know more about processes, the AFCA contact is 1800 931 678 or visit the website: www. afca.org.au 10 | Motor Trader June 2019
BIOFUELS MANDATES The Service Station and Convenience Store Association (SS&CSA) is considering a Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy discussion paper reviewing Queensland Biofuels Mandates. The mandate commenced on 1 January 2017 setting a minimum of 3 per cent of the total volume of regular unleaded petrol sales and ethanol blended petrol sales (such as E10) by liable fuel retailers be sustainable biobased petrol. From 1 July 2018, the biobased petrol mandate increased to 4 per cent. Recent analysis identified that the biofuels mandates had been increasing the uptake and availability of ethanol and improving the supply chain for biodiesel, but the 4 per cent ethanol mandates had not been achieved. The review addresses barriers to increase consumer demand necessary to meet the 4 per cent target. The SS&CSA will be responding to the discussion with viewpoints that reflect the obligations of E10 and biodiesel fuel sellers and consumer demand.
FINALLY The election scene is over until Saturday, 28th March 2020 when the local government general elections will be held. In the meantime, congratulatory letters will be written to all successful Federal election Queensland House of Representatives and Senate candidates. Additionally, commendatory letters will be forwarded to Federal Cabinet and the Shadow Cabinet Ministers whose portfolio responsibilities align with the interests of the Association. Each of these letters promote the Association and invites each to visit our corporate office to discuss the automotive value chain issues, skills and training. Until next month, take care and stay safe.
Small change. Big future. Matthew Webster (46) has a long way to go before he hangs up his hat, but he can already picture his retirement. He plans to travel around Australia in a caravan with his wife — once he convinces her that it will be fun! Matt has spent his career in the motor trades and is well on his way to making sure he has enough super to see the country in comfort. He joined MTAA Super as an apprentice in 1989 and now works in an automotive training role in NSW. “I’m really happy I’ve been with MTAA Super. It’s the industry super fund for my trade and has been supporting careers in the automotive industry for over 25 years.” “I’m still a long way off retirement, but I do think about what I will do when I stop working and how I will support myself and my family.”
Matt, like many Australians, is not alone in his concern. Thanks to changing work patterns and increased life expectancy, many of us will spend close to a quarter of our lives as retirees. For some, the age pension alone or relying solely on your employer’s super contributions may not be enough. Leeanne Turner, CEO of MTAA Super, says it’s important that workers do what they can to help grow their super throughout their working lives. “Too many workers are hands-off with their super. Retirement can feel like a lifetime away, so it’s easy to put super on the back burner. But there are a lot of ways you can actively grow your super now.” She says one of the easiest and most effective ways is to make regular extra contributions.
“Small amounts can go a long way. Putting as little as an extra $10 per week into your super can add up to thousands over a 30+ year career.” “This is because of the compounding nature of superannuation. With super, you don’t just grow your employer and voluntary contributions, you also grow the investment returns on these contributions. Every dollar you add to your super account boosts your super’s earning capacity.” Ms Turner also adds that making extra contributions is easy. “It’s simple. Just ask your employer to set up a regular (pre-tax) salary sacrifice into your super, or make direct (after-tax) deposits into your super whenever you can afford to put a little aside.”

Nick Thomas
MTA|Q&A After several years in management and service roles at dealership and franchise workshops, Nick Thomas wanted to offer a more personalised service and competitive pricing. With that strategy in mind, he opened Ashmore RWC and Automotive in 2015 and never looked back. In just four years he’s doubled his workshop space and gathered a loyal – and growing – book of repeat clients.
Can you tell us the products and services Ashmore RWC and Automotive provide? NT: Obviously we provide roadworthies,
plus servicing, logbook servicing, brakes, specialty repairs. We also do suspension repairs – we replace a lot of Ford Falcon 12 | Motor Trader June 2019
and Ford Territory diff bushes. When you get that clunk in the rear end that's usually broken bushes, so we remove the full rear axle and replace the bushes. One of our other specialty repairs - and we do heaps of them - is that Hyundai i30
Ashmore RWC and Automotive Services
have a common issue where they clunk in the steering. Initially, a lot of shops were replacing the whole column. There's a bush, a little coupling that we’ve sourced, and we actually pull the columns apart and repair them. We replace that part which fixes the noise.
How long have you been established here? NT: We've been here almost four years.
I took over from another mechanic shop – Europa Motors. I didn't actually buy the business itself, but I bought his equipment and took over his phone number and created my own business from it. He'd been around for 32 years in the same place and specialised in European cars. We now do just about everything. Probably the only thing we don't do at the moment is air con and we're trying to gain licensing to get back into doing that.
“WE'VE BEEN HERE ALMOST
FOUR YEARS. I TOOK OVER FROM ANOTHER MECHANIC SHOP – EUROPA MOTORS . . . I BOUGHT HIS EQUIPMENT AND TOOK OVER HIS PHONE NUMBER AND CREATED MY OWN BUSINESS FROM IT.” What's your background in the industry? NT: I always had an interest in cars and
started as an apprentice mechanic at Zupps when I was 17 or 18. I've worked on and off the tools over the years, so have done a little bit of car sales, and seem to have always worked my way towards the management side wherever I’ve been. I managed a couple of Kmart Tyre and Autos, and was a service advisor. I worked at Mitsubishi in London – my now-wife June 2019 Motor Trader | 13
and I were travelling and based over there for a while. I started in the sales department and moved into the service department where I was a service advisor and did workshop repairs as well.
Are you still on the tools much today? NT: I’m split between the workshop and
managing the front end of the business. It's hard to mentally prepare for it if you haven't had much management experience – you need to be knowledgeable in the office side of things. Luckily, I’ve got a management background but it’s still a big workload.
And obviously you can’t let your responsibilities in the workshop suffer. NT: You need to be knowledgeable on
your mechanical side too - you need to be a good researcher. People want quotes quickly. Gone are the days where you could just price stuff off the top of your head. Now you've got to look up parts, you've got to research: “do I need to buy special tools to do that job?” There are so many more
14 | Motor Trader June 2019
“I’M SPLIT BETWEEN THE
WORKSHOP AND MANAGING THE FRONT END OF THE BUSINESS . . . LUCKILY, I’VE GOT A MANAGEMENT BACKGROUND BUT IT’S STILL A BIG WORKLOAD.” aspects to think about in the type of work we're being asked to quote on now.
Is that split focus between the front end and the workshop your biggest day-to-day challenge? NT: You usually start the day with a plan,
but nothing ever seems to go as planned in this trade. The phones tend to always be ringing - which is a good thing. We get a lot of people that just drop in to ask questions or to book. A lot of people are old school. They do go off reviews, but they still want to come out and meet you and see who's going to be working on their car. So drop-ins are welcome of
course, but then that’s more time from your day. Trying to balance the business and the workshop is a hard game, which is why I've gone down the avenue of having staff and mechanics.
What’s your current team? NT: We’ve got a really good close-knit team.
I've got two mechanics; they're brothers. I hired one of them initially, then he told me his brother wasn't too happy where he was, so we brought him on too. We've gradually, each year, grown by a staff member. We only used to have one shed, then we took over the shed next door and grew from, initially, one bay to three. I think this is the size we’re happy and comfortable with now.
What are your plans for the next couple of years? Are you happy with your current footprint? NT: I'm happy with the size of our workshop now because it's controllable. I don't want to get too big because I like being able to know exactly what's going on with the business and be able to
interact with our customers. I want to know my customers and not give them that dealership workshop mentality where they're just a number. That's probably the biggest reason behind why I got into my own business in the first place.
You seem to have quite a block of really enthusiastic online reviews. How do you market? And how do those reviews tie into what you’re doing online? NT: We do push things online. Obviously, you're trying to get on the front page of Google, so we push keywords with our

roadworthy servicing and our specialty repairs. The idea is to get someone in the door. Once they get to know us, we tend to have pretty good customer retention. The work that Maz Hancock, an SEO specialist, has put into building our website and maintaining it has put us on page one of Google for multiple keyword searches. That has been a massive part of our growth.
Are you doing other marketing apart from the digital side? NT: All our marketing is in service of
making sure you have a good reputation. We're on AutoGuru as well. They've been really good to me, but I still think word of mouth is the best.
When you look at the evolution of EV and autonomous cars, are you keeping up with that research? NT: That's all a scary thought. It is
something that's on my mind at the moment - what you can do to be prepared for it. But it's like any growth or development, we've all evolved to keep up with what the industry's done in the past. There are plenty of new things on cars now 16 | Motor Trader June 2019

BUT I STILL THINK WORD OF MOUTH IS THE BEST.” that you wouldn't have thought of in the past, even down to an electric handbrake. With EV technology, we're going to have to be provided with the training on new systems or we're going to be left behind aren't we? But definitely, training's starting to pop up for it so yeah, we're going to jump on it. No doubt.
And what to do with your spare time? NT: Spare time I spend with my kids, I've
got three young kids. I've also got an old WRX that I try and spend some time on too. It's looking quite tidy now. It's just been painted. It's an old GC8 WRX, the 2000 model, so up against autonomous cars, it’s probably the opposite style. I'm maybe more old school!

I
N A WORLD where we might fear celebrity status being increasingly defined simply by the size of a car engine, or perhaps the quantity of motorbikes lined up on a driveway, it’s actually refreshing to find that the true motoring passions of the rich and famous come in rather more unpredictable guises. Sure, there’s still a bit of showmanship to be had – any rightminded A-lister would rather have a photographer lurking around their set of wheels than not – yet it seems the tarmac obsessions of those truly in the know take on something much more akin to
BRIAN JOHNSON ENGLISH MUSICIAN AGE: 71
B
RIAN JOHNSON’S RESPONSE to our first question on the subject of celebrity motoring obsessions is to reject the notion that he is a celebrity in the first place. It’s not the best start. That he is hopelessly obsessed with anything on four wheels is, thankfully, a point he is willing to entertain though. “Away from the stage I am always racing,” he says. “It’s mainly Europe and America, but give me anything at high speed and I am there – it’s in the blood… it always has been. “I grew up on a road that had two cars in it – two! It was a dream to own a car, and it really didn’t matter what you had.
“I THINK THAT’S WHY THE MINI COOPER IS STILL THE ULTIMATE TO ME – IT NEVER REPRESENTED GLAMOUR, SPEED, POWER; BUT IT STOOD FOR EVERYTHING A CAR SHOULD, NAMELY FREEDOM.”
“. . . IT’S ACTUALLY REFRESHING TO FIND THAT THE TRUE MOTORING PASSIONS OF THE RICH AND FAMOUS COME IN RATHER MORE UNPREDICTABLE GUISES.” an emotional, cerebral worship of life on two or four wheels… just the way it should be. MTA Queensland takes a look at a crosssection of stars in film and music and their motoring passions.
I think that’s why the Mini Cooper is still the ultimate to me – it never represented glamour, speed, power; but it stood for everything a car should, namely freedom.” While Johnson still frequently races Minis, and the iconic car has been the subject of his Cars That Rock TV programme, the AC/DC frontman admits he has other favourites in his collection, although they do tend to follow a certain theme for this most patriotic of lead men. “The first car I paid good money for was the Royale RP4, which I still have to this day. I’ve won so many races with it and visited so many podiums on it. Manufactured in England in 1971, they only built 12 of them, and the aim was to go up against Lotus. They did alright, but they were never as good as Lotus. “Now, there are only seven left and I’ve got one of them, and they are just one of the fastest little sports racers left. I love it. I still race it. “I’ve got a few other iconic racers - the Lola T70 Mark 1 which is V8, 204bhp . . . it’s like a rocket. Then there’s the Pilbeam, another English car. Lola’s English by the way - in fact all of my cars are English, bar the Porsche 914/6, which my wife drives. I really struggle to stray too far from home comforts, I guess!” June 2019 Motor Trader | 21
James Hetfield's 1948 'Black Pearl'
JAMES HETFIELD AMERICAN MUSICIAN AGE: 55
M
ETALLICA GUITARIST JAMES Hetfield shares Johnson’s position that yearning to be around cars was always a very physical thing. “I used to get this feeling as a kid when I would be sitting around at home and my stomach would start jumping, and I would want to build something. When I realised the calling was towards cars, it felt like a real epiphany.” The iconic musician has shifted over 125 million records worldwide, but is as happy investing thought and energy into his four-wheeled friends as he is satisfying a fanbase that has been buying his music for well over three decades. “When you’re down there welding, you’re in a tiny zone and it’s the same with music and the same with lyrics. I go up to my garage and I don’t know what I am going
22 | Motor Trader June 2019
to make; I just start and it’s a very freeing feeling . . . you never know what you are going to end up with. “I mean, cars are like people to me, they like love and they love to be touched, driven and admired. My life is based around heart and soul, and from the music to the lifestyle to the way that we treat our fans it’s all about expressing your heart and love for whatever your passion is. And obviously mine is cars . . . and cars have souls, make no mistake! “It’s absolutely no secret that I enjoy motorsports and cars, but I also embrace the art side of them. I love how unique each car can be. I don’t like rules with music, and I especially don’t see the point of them in cars. Freedom of expression and the acceptance that we are all different and embrace different things, is essential. “That’s how the Black Pearl came about. We actually started with that one totally from scratch - we took a 1948 Jaguar and then went down the frame and built it from there, using a drawing we had made. It took it to a whole different level of car building and we are very proud of the end result.”
KEANU REEVES AMERICAN ACTOR AGE: 54
W
HILE KEANU REEVES’ resurgence on the big screen has seen him return this year for a third instalment in the John Wick franchise, no quantity of material trappings in his Beverly Hills mansion can rival the thrill of venturing out to ride his vintage motorcycles around Los Angeles in the sunshine. “The first bike I ever rode was a Kawasaki Enduro and there was something absolutely mystifying about it. I always loved the thrill that sat between style and danger, and to this day I wouldn’t sit on a bike that didn’t offer me both.” If there is one personality fault the actor is willing to have levelled at him, it is his wild spontaneity. The evidence? Well, over the years, he has found the closure of a film project as the perfect excuse to take home
a bike from the shoot, leaving himself with a collection that includes Suzuki GS1100E and GSX-R750 models, a 1974 BMW 750, a Kawasaki KZ 900, an ‘84 Harley Shovelhead, and a Moto Guzzi, amongst others. Despite a couple of wipe-outs, Keanu doesn’t carry a sense of fear with him whilst riding his motorcycle, but he admits he doesn’t go as fast as he once did. “I don't really feel the need to test the limits as much. I also don't use riding a motorcycle as a way of getting rid of anger or frustration the way I used to. “When I was younger I used to get out on the road with the bike and just go as fast as I could and basically let it all out on the road.” In recent years Reeves has taken his appreciation for what makes a great motorcycle one step further, co-founding the Arch Motorcycle Company with Gard Hollinger, who is known for his work with LA County Choprods. The pair have developed their first bike, the KRGT-1, and the model arrived on UK shores for the first time in May 2019, with a retail price of around £90,000. Arch KRGT-1

Eric Bana's 1974 Ford XB Falcon Hardtop
ERIC BANA AUSTRALIAN ACTOR AGE: 50
L
ONG BEFORE ANYBODY recognised Eric Bana as Hector in Troy, the actor was getting his action thrills as a car enthusiast, developing his passion and motoring expertise as a teenager in Melbourne’s suburbs. Driving, racing, or engineering; it made no difference to Bana, who loved all aspects of motorsport, to the point where he planned a career in the trade if his acting dreams didn’t pan out. At age 14, he even wanted to leave school to become a mechanic. “My obsession with cars definitely stemmed from the way I grew up,” he says. “Where I lived, we were near the airport, which meant there was lots of room to go driving around anytime I wanted, really. It was great! “I could go out there driving and hone my skills, test myself in a place where I wasn’t going to cause too much damage or be a threat to anybody. I guess that has changed now – there are far more people, and the rules of the road are stricter, but back then I took advantage of that space as much as I could.”
24 | Motor Trader June 2019
It was around this time that his first true love story began, an enduring one that remains to this day. The 15-year-old Bana purchased his first car, a 1974 Ford XB Falcon Hardtop, for the princely sum of $1100, and the motor, against all odds, has been a constant in Bana’s life for the past 25 years. Nicknamed ‘The Beast’, it has gone through any number of complex reconstructions in the quarter of a century since he bought it “from a drunk guy in the pub on a cold winter’s night, in a pretty shady deal”. It also went through a traumatic smash at the Targa Tasmania rally in 2007. “The Beast and yours truly were both nearly destroyed when we rammed into that tree. My navigator and I were lucky to come out of that alive, because a lot of people have been badly hurt or killed in those kinds of crashes.” The experience initially shook Bana up, but ultimately it failed to dampen his resolve for the excitement of the track. “I actually learned quit a big lesson from that,” he continues. “If you’re going to be a racer, then the last thing you should do when you want to win so badly is race around in a car that you really love and care about. I often look back and wonder what I was thinking doing that, because I was so close to writing it off for good.”
EWAN MCGREGOR SCOTTISH ACTOR AGE: 48
S
COTTISH-BORN EWAN MCGREGOR is a self-confessed motorcycle obsessive with a thirst for epic international journeys with friend Charley Boorman. If not venturing abroad, however, you’ll usually find him revving around the streets of Los Angeles. “I love getting out there. I want to encourage people to do the same - get out and explore the world and experience things you wouldn’t otherwise.” His cross-continental rides are the stuff of legend. The duo filmed two epic biking expeditions for the BBC that have become as career defining as any of
McGregor’s movie roles. Long Way Round (on a R1150GS) documented the pair’s 12-country, 115-day odyssey from London to New York in 2004; while Long Way Down (on a R1200GS) captured a 19,000m trek from John O’Groats in Scotland to South Africa in 2007. Their rides through the iconic vineyards of Europe and the infinite deserts, jungle and planes of Africa – all in the name of charities including UNICEF, with whom McGregor has worked extensively – were personal triumphs. “There is an element of reflection, as you’re sat on a bike for hours on end, but you also take that time to stop about thinking about things and just ride a bike. And during that time you encounter very different situations than you’re used to. That becomes entirely food for your soul. It is incredibly fulfilling.” Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman

ARE YOU READY FOR CITEXPO 2019?
T
HE 17TH ANNUAL China International Tire Expo (CITEXPO) will take place on August 19-21, 2019, in the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center. The international tyre, wheel and related equipment trade fair is open to professionals only. It will host around 360 exhibitors in approximately 40,000 square meters of show space. More than 12,000 professional buyers and visitors are expected. "The show becomes one of the most attended shows in the worldwide tyre industry not only because it is held in the largest tyre production and consumption market – China, but also because the highly internationalised buyers of this show are of high quality and quantity that has been exceeding the exhibitors’ expectation. Around 50% of our visitors are from over 110 countries, so you can sell to not only China, but also pretty much every country in the world, especially emerging markets, such as Central Asia, Eastern Europe, Middle East, and Africa,” says Sam Lai, International Marketing Manager of CITEXPO organiser, Reliable International Exhibition Services. "Because the uncertainty created by the trading war, dealers from around the world should definitely come to the show this year so you can dig deeper into the latest information, how it will affect your business, and negotiate a new deal. Moreover, we have non-Chinese suppliers that can satisfy your needs too.”
CITEXPO ORGANISERS NOTE: CITEXPO aims to provide an international trade and negotiation platform for the industry. The exhibition gathers high-quality tyre brands from China and abroad. The exhibits cover various types of tyres, peripheral accessories for tyres, tyre repairs, testing and tyre changing equipment, tools and services, tyre wheel production equipment and raw materials, tyre retreading equipment and raw materials, and other related facilities. accessory market are fully covered: distribution channels, post-replacement markets, consumer applications, and after-sales maintenance. In 2017, China had 28.88 million new vehicles sales compared to U.S.’s 17.25 million. It represented almost 30% of global sales, which was 97 million. And the average age of a car in China is only 4.4 years, meaning the aftermarket in China will grow rapidly in the coming years. According to McKinsey’s report, the Chinese aftermarket will grow 7.5% per year compared to 1.7% in North American and 1.5% in Europe till 2030. It will become a $260 billion market from 101.5 billion currently. The rest of Asia will be the second fastest growing market with growth rate of 6.1% and will become a 220 billion market. Not only is CITEXPO the largest trade show in those two markets, but also 60% of CITEXPO overseas visitors are from the rest of the world, which makes CITEXPO one of the most international tyre and wheel trade shows in the world. CITEXPO also has buyers from all 33 provinces in China, which is very important for foreign manufacturers who are interested in the China market, because different regions have different dynamics, rules, and challenges. The number one reason to come to CITEXPO is you can see new brands that you may not otherwise see in any other show, say show organisers. With the scale and state-of-the-art exhibition space of Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center, visitors can see and touch all the products, new and old, from different suppliers under one roof. The exhibition center will be divided into the following areas: • Tires, Casings, and Tubes; • Wheels/Rims; • Tire Accessories; • Equipment for Tire Repairs; • Materials, Plants, Equipment, and Tools for Tire and Wheel Production; • Tire Retreading; and Other Related Services.

An Eye on Innovation
KATHY WINKCUP CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER GENERAL MANAGER INNOVATION
I
F EVER THERE was a piece of news that highlighted the pressure and challenges that even the biggest automotive entities face as the industry continues its fastpaced evolution, it’s that of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) announcing its hopes (and subsequently dropping the idea) of a merger with Renault. This was, you sense, more than a regular merger move - one in which two giant companies spruik the ‘synergies’ of combining their businesses and the tremendous cost savings they’ll enjoy in traditional production and manufacturing and the like. Rather, this was about the joining of two industry heavyweights in a bid to tackle the challenges of a radically changing auto landscape – one in which electrification, autonomy, and connectivity are the keywords of the future. Recognising the direction our industry is heading is something of which we all need to be aware.
OUT AND ABOUT Networking and connecting with organisations that are also involved in the innovation, start-up and technology space remains a core feature of MTAiQ’s work and, and May was another month in with members of the Hub team reached out to expand and strengthen that network. 36 | Motor Trader June 2019
The American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) and Austrade held an event at the beginning of the month called Creating the Future: Opportunities for Queensland Startups. A panel of speakers, including the CEO of UT Creative Enterprise Australia, and Head of Development and Production at Screen Queensland discussed the position of the creative industries, how they benefit the economy and how that sector is the fastest-growing market segment of the Australian economy in terms of its contribution to GDP. The core of this growth has been the result of ‘the expansion of the internet and new consumption pattern enabling new market opportunities in creative technology’. The awards bring together Queensland’s most exciting exporters and culminate each October in an Awards Gala at which 16 category winners are honoured and one is crowned the Premier of Queensland’s Exporter of the Year. It’s a prestigious award to win and a great way for a business to raise its profile. On the future mobility front, MTAiQ was invited along to the celebration of mobility company Lime’s ‘one million rides’ in Brisbane. The electric scooter-sharing business hosted its biggest supporters as well as local organisations and businesses to celebrate its success. In a similar vein, MTA Queensland met with Bird, another U.S.-based electric scooter sharing company. Bird is looking at the possibility of working with MTA Queensland members for repair and maintenance, as well as storage and charging services for their smart electric machines. CLICK We’ll keep you informed. TO SUBMIT At the end of the YOUR IDEA month, MTAiQ travelled TO MTAIQ west with Lex van
“WE CONTINUE TO WORK
ON PROJECTS SPECIFICALLY AIMED AT THE NEEDS OF OUR ASSOCIATION MEMBERS. 3D PRINTING, FUTURE SKILLING, DIGITAL FOR SMALL BUSINESSES, FUTURE TECHNOLOGY ASSESSMENT AND DEVELOPMENT – ALL ARE PART OF OUR BRIEF.” Cooten of virtual and augmented reality (VR and AR) company Immerse Enterprise to present as at the Toowoomba Visiting Entrepreneur Meetup. Lex is a passionate advocate of the possibilities of VR and AR and the ways the technology can change the way we interact with the world. At the event, he presented his vision on how that future might look. Fascinating stuff. One of the most exciting technological developments in recent times is 5G connectivity. 5G offers some truly remarkable upload and download speeds and you may have recently read about the Oppo Reno 5G smartphone reaching download speeds exceeding 1.9Gbps in a demonstration in Sydney. To put that into perspective, the NBN network offers a top speed of around 100Mbps – that 5G demonstration was 19 times quicker!! The MTAiQ team was invited to view the technology at Telstra’s 5G Innovation Centre on the Gold Coast, and it is going to be a true game-changer. Superfast connectivity is essential not just for downloading those high-definition movies and TV shows we all love to watch, but for the future of mobility. Vehicles interacting with each other and with infrastructure need to do so at lightning speeds and connectivity at 5G is another step toward advanced and autonomous mobility.
VISITORS A few special guests made trips to MTA Queensland’s head office during the month
to tour the facility, check out the MTAiQ Hub and exchange ideas on innovation. These included visits from representatives of RAA (Royal Automobile Association of South Australia); team members of the INNOV8 Logan virtual innovation hub; and the RACQ, who MTAiQ also met to discuss possible involvement in the RACQ’s excellent Motorfest event.
GOT AN IDEA? LET US KNOW! Our drive to assist automotive businesses to evolve alongside the greater automotive industry continues to be at the core of our mission. It can be daunting to see and read how much, and how quickly, developments are occurring, and it is an absolute necessity to keep up with these developments as they begin to trickle, and then flood, through to us here in Australia. MTAiQ, MTA Queensland and MTA Institute are here to help by sharing information, offering training courses, and advocating on members’ behalf. At MTAiQ, we continue to work on projects specifically aimed at the needs of our Association members. 3D printing, future skilling, digital for small businesses, future technology assessment and development – all are part of our brief. But we also know that there are some great ideas out there just waiting to be given the right encouragement and backing so they can grow to become a major part of the industry’s transformational journey. The thing is, of course, that we here at MTAiQ have to know about these ideas to be able to help! So, if you have an idea or the seed of a plan that you believe in and has the ability to improve the industry – in a small of big way - then let us know. Don’t hide it! As Megan Smith, former Chief Technology Officer of the U.S. under President Barack Obama: “Innovation comes out of great human ingenuity and very personal passions.” Until next time. POLESTAR ESTABLISHES NEW UK R&D FACILITY FOR PERFORMANCE EVS
P
OLESTAR HAS EXPANDED its research and development capacity with the establishment of a new R&D centre in the UK. Situated in Coventry, the new facility will, the company says, give it the ability to engineer its future electric performance vehicles. Polestar’s UK engineering operation will initially employ around 60 engineers. Polestar says these engineers have already been involved in preliminary development work for the company and will now be fully immersed in future Polestar car projects. “Polestar’s role as a technology spearhead requires new and developing skills in low-volume, light-weight, multimaterial performance car engineering, and the new UK operation will allow us to take the next steps towards our future

JAGUAR AND CHARGEFOX SIGN AGREEMENT ON EV CHARGING
J
AGUAR AUSTRALIA HAS signed an official agreement with Australian public electric vehicle (EV) charging network, Chargefox. The relationship makes Jaguar, a founding partner of the Australian Electric Vehicle Council, the first local manufacturer to formally support EV drivers through an agreement with the ultra-rapid electric vehicle charging network that is currently being rolled-out nationally by Chargefox. The new partnership will, the company says, help to ensure Jag owners will have easy access to a rapidly developing major, multiple outlet, vehicle charging network. “Jaguar drivers will be able to drive long distances confident in the knowledge they will have access to free, unlimited charging on some of the world’sa fastest chargers,” said Marty Andrews, Chargefox CEO. Chargefox already has three fully operational, ultra-rapid charging stations operating in regional Victoria plus the latest site recently opened at Toombul shopping centre in Brisbane. By end July 2019, there are expected to be eight ultrachargers in operation, with 90 per cent of the network planned to be operational by end September 2019. By the end of the year a national network of 22 ultra chargers will be operational forming a network connecting Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Adelaide. Additional ultra-rapid charging stations are also being planned for Western Australia and Tasmania and Mr Andrews
Jaguar EV charging on Chargefox’s ultra-rapid EV charging network
said that, using a Chargefox ultra-rapid station, Jaguar I-PACE owners will be able to fully charge their cars – giving a 400km driving range - in less than 40 minutes. Jaguar EV drivers, including those who already own an I-PACE, will get five years free, unlimited charging on Chargefox’s ultra-rapid EV charging network. “Charging infrastructure is critical to increasing electric vehicle uptake in Australia and this agreement means Jaguar customers can buy an EV safe in the knowledge it will meet all their expectations,” said Mark Cameron, Jaguar Land Rover Australia Managing Director. “Not only does this initiative make interstate travel and longer journeys a reality, it also benefits regional areas by extending the ownership and driving experience for our customers living outside capital cities.” “With 22 station locations open by the end of the year, range anxiety ceases to be an issue. Drivers will be able to travel without concern for the level of charge in their batteries.” June 2019 Motor Trader | 39

The Varjo XR-1 headset provides photorealistic mixed or virtual reality at a high-definition resolution
VOLVO CARS AND VARJO LAUNCH MIXED-REALITY APPLICATION FOR CAR DEVELOPMENT
V
OLVO CARS AND Varjo, the Finnish maker of high-end augmented-reality headsets, have created a mixed-reality approach to evaluating prototypes, designs and active safety technologies. The technology has made it possible to drive a real car while wearing a mixedreality headset, adding virtual elements or complete features that seem real to both the driver and the car’s sensors, for development purposes. The Varjo XR-1 headset provides photorealistic mixed or virtual reality at a high-definition resolution and can, the companies say, radically reduce development timeframes by creating the new ability to evaluate features and designs almost immediately. Safety experts are able to drive real cars while wearing the XR-1 headset at Volvo’s research facilities in Sweden, testing virtual active safety systems imposed via augmented reality 40 | Motor Trader June 2019

on the real-life environment. “With this mixed-reality approach, we can start evaluating designs and technologies while they are literally still on the drawing board,” said Henrik Green, Chief Technology Officer at Volvo Cars. “Instead of the usual static way of evaluating new products and ideas, we can test concepts on the road immediately. This approach offers considerable potential cost savings by identifying priorities and clearing bottlenecks much earlier in the design and development process.”

Repair Conference 2019
While much of the industry hype is on future technology, there is a huge gap in addressing the day to day issues repairers face in their businesses. SKODA UNVEILS THE CITIGO E iV ELECTRIC VEHICLE
S
KODA HAS LAUNCHED the Citigo e iV, the Czech manufacturer’s first all-electric vehicle. The five-door, four-seater city car will come in two trim levels – Ambition and Style - and is powered by a 61kW motor that generates maximum torque of 210Nm. The 36.8kWh lithium ion battery will, the company says, allow for a range of up to 265 km in the WLTP cycle. The front wheel drive Citigo e iV can do 0 to 100 km/h in 12.5 seconds with a top speed of 130 km/h.
Skoda says the battery can be recharged to 80 per cent in one hour using a CCS (Combined Charging System) charging cable connected to a 40 kW DC fast charger. Using a 7.2 kW AC wall box, the battery is charged to 80 per cent in around 4 hours, or 12.5 hours using a 2.3kW home charging station. Both the Combined Charging System and the cable required for AC charging come as standard in the Style trim variant and will Skoda Citigo e iV

be optional for the Ambition model. The Citigo e IV can also be recharged using a standard household plug socket. Standard equipment in the Citigo e iV includes electric front windows, Climatronic, remote central locking, the Swing II radio and the Move&Fun smartphone docking station on the dashboard. Using the Move&Fun app, a mobile phone can be used as an additional display for vehicle data, for media playback or as a navigation system. There are also new mobile online services for the app, allowing the battery or air conditioning to be accessed remotely. In addition, the Citigo e iV comes equipped with Lane Assist as standard and features front airbags as well as head and thorax airbags for the front seats. Series production for Europe is due to begin in the second half of 2019.
THE HECTOR PROJECT – Hydrogen Waste Collection Vehicles in North West Europe – will deploy and test 7 fuel cell garbage trucks, with the aim to demonstrate that fuel cell garbage trucks provide an effective solution to reduce emissions from road transport in the north west Europe area. Coordinated by the European association HyER (Hydrogen Fuel Cells and Electro-Mobility in European Regions) and supported by a €5.5m ($AU8.9 million) grant from the INTERREG North West Europe program, the HECTOR project will run for 4 years. The project will deploy seven garbage trucks in seven pilot sites across the North West Europe area: Aberdeen (Scotland), Groningen (Netherlands), Arnhem (Netherlands), Duisburg (Germany), Herten (Germany), Touraine Vallee de l’Indre (France) and Brussels (Belgium). The project is aiming to test the vehicles in normal operating conditions and the trucks will use existing hydrogen refuelling infrastructure. When possible, the pilot sites will use green hydrogen to fuel the trucks. The pilot sites will cover a wide range of operational contexts. While some of the trucks will be operated in city centres, others will be tested in rural areas. Some of the trucks will collect municipal waste on a fixed schedule, other will collect industrial waste on a flexible schedule. The trucks deployed in the project will range from container trucks to front arm loading trucks, both left- and right-hand drive. June 2019 Motor Trader | 43

FORD LOOKS TO ROBOTS AND AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES FOR FUTURE DELIVERY SERVICES
F
VIDEO: DIGIT: FUTURE OF SELF-DRIVING VEHICLE DELIVERY ORD IS TEAMING up with Agility Robotics to explore the way deliveries are made. Together, the companies have revealed an autonomous vehicle/robot set-up that will deliver a package all the way to your front door. Ford says that since self-driving vehicles ‘can potentially move people and goods simultaneously, they hold great potential to make deliveries even more convenient and efficient. A ride-hailing trip could double as a delivery service, dropping off packages in between transporting passengers.’ A two-legged robot designed and built by Agility Robotics, Digit is lightweight and capable of handling packages up to 18kg. It can, apparently, climb stairs, traverse uneven terrain and react to being bumped without losing its balance. Designed to fold up and be tucked neatly into an autonomous delivery vehicle, Digit can rely on the advanced technology within the vehicle for help in doing its job. While it does have Lidar and cameras and therefore enough sensor power to navigate basic hurdles, it can send information back to the vehicle which can then configure a solution. SIDE CAMERA MIRROR SYSTEM TO BE STANDARD FOR HONDA HONDA HAS CONFIRMED that the Side Camera Mirror System of the new Honda e urban electric vehicle will be available as standard when the car enters production. The Side Camera Mirror System replaces conventional side view mirrors with compact cameras providing live images to two six-inch screens inside the vehicle. Integrated at either end of the dashboard. Unlike conventional side mirrors, the cameras are contained within the width of the car and do not extend beyond the wheel arches. As well as improving visibility, Honda says these compact cameras reduce aerodynamic drag by around 90 per cent compared to conventional door mirrors. The result is an approximate 3.8 per cent improvement for the entire vehicle, contributing towards the model’s overall efficiency and range. Furthermore, there is a significant reduction of wind noise compared to normal side mirrors at higher speeds. The shape of the camera unit housing is designed to prevent water drops on the lens. A water-repellent coating on the lens surfaces deter any other residual water build up. The driver can choose between ‘normal view’ and ‘wide view’ via the vehicle settings. Blind spots will, Honda says, be reduced by around 10 per cent in normal view and approximately 50 per cent in wide view. When selecting reverse gear, guidelines appear on the side view screens in addition to an enhanced camera angle. The Honda e compact electric car forms part of the brand’s strategy to feature electrified technology in all cars it sells in Europe by 2025. June 2019 Motor Trader | 45

GOODYEAR DEVELOPS C100 CONCEPT TYRE FOR CITROEN'S 19_19 CONCEPT CAR
G
OODYEAR HAS DEVELOPED a new concept tyre, the C100, for Citroen’s new concept vehicle, the 19_19. An autonomous, connected, electric vehicle, the Citroën 19_19 Concept marks the French company’s 100th anniversary and was designed for EV customers who want to take trips way beyond a city’s limits. The futuristic, high-tech vehicle has, Citroen says, a range of up to 800km. Conceptualised with an extra-large dimension and aesthetics to match the 19_19 Concept’s design, the Goodyear C100 concept tyre is envisaged, the company says, to deliver the comfort and smart performance the unique vehicle requires. “Goodyear’s C100 concept tyre was specifically designed for the Citroën 19_19 Concept vehicle,” said Mike Rytokoski, Chief

Marketing Officer, Consumer Europe at Goodyear. “It features technology to deliver maximum comfort and efficiency for electric mobility and the intelligent capabilities needed to support an autonomous vehicle.” The C100 concept features include: • “Tall and Narrow” Structure: The C100 is nearly one metre in diameter, compared to 60cm for an average tyre.
Citroën 19_19 Concept

Goodyear says this larger diameter would deliver efficiency, comfort and performance benefits, from lower rolling resistance to improved ride and wet performance. • Custom Tread Design: The C100 features a custom, nature-inspired tread design. With nearly 100 more blocks in its tread band than the average tyre, the C100 is designed to deliver a far quieter ride. The tread groove compound is, says Goodyear, inspired by the attributes of a natural sponge and has the ability to stiffen in the dry or soften in the wet. • Intelligence and Connectivity: The C100 concept is designed to use advanced sensor technology. It would be able to sense road surface and weather conditions and communicate with the Citroën 19_19 Concept vehicle’s autonomous control system to improve driving performance. It would also feature advanced active wear technology to assess the state of the tyre. While the C100 is a purely conceptual design, some of its featured technologies, such as a ‘tall and narrow’ structure, are already being supplied by Goodyear today. Others, such as intelligent tyre capabilities, are in development.
TOYOTA AUSTRALIA, together with Toyota Material Handling Australia and Toyota Fleet Management is to introduce a fleet of autonomous Autopilot Toyota's automated vehicles in to its Altona Autopilot Tow Truck with warehouse from its Li-Ion Battery technology operation start in 2020. Manufactured in Sweden by Toyota Material Handling Europe, the fleet will consist of six Autopilot Tow Trucks (TAE500) and one Autopilot Reach Truck (RAE160). Toyota says they will apply Autopilot driverless technology to achieve mobility in conveyance, towing, lifting, and be able to autonomously place product throughout the warehouse and pick orders for customers. All models in the range will also have the ability to be used in manual mode as conventional warehouse vehicles. The fleet will have integrated navigation and leading safety systems. The safety systems include scanners and obstacle detection devices designed to stop the vehicle and minimise the risk of a collision. Fleet Management, Emergency-Stop buttons, warning sounds, and lights will be standard across the range together with a blue LED warning light projected in front of the vehicle to assist in noisy environments or when Autopilot is approaching around a corner. Toyota says that Autopilot will also deliver energy efficiencies via LithiumIon battery technology, automatic charging, high vehicle utilisation, and low maintenance costs. MAKE: GM MODEL: 1972 CORVETTE STINGRAY ENGINE: ZQ3 350 V8 OWNED BY: JOHN FORSTER
June 2019 Motor Trader | 53
XXXX.
WORDS: LINDSAY SAUNDERS
I
T’S A PRETTY long way from hotting up mum’s FJ Holden as a 15-year-old to becoming the proud owner of this spectacular 1972 Corvette Stingray, but it’s not a hard history to trace for classic car enthusiast John Forster. Sitting at his kitchen table as John outlines his automotive history proves a fascinating trip in time with a bloke whose passion for cars is clear from the get-go. “Its been a lifelong thing for me,” John explained. “Mum had an FJ Holden and Dad was a mechanic. I used to tinker with that and when I was old enough to get my first job, after finishing school at 15, I started buying parts for the FJ.” That job was, unsurprisingly, as an apprentice mechanic with a well-known dealership for the time – around 1976 – Laylor 54 | Motor Trader June 2019
Motors at Chardons Corner in south Brisbane. “I added things like wide wheels, a twin carbie . . . little things that meant nothing to Mum, and Dad reckoned I was wasting my money, but it looked good,” John, a Moorooka boy born and raised, said. “After I had the job I got a loan for $1500 to buy an HG station wagon. Mum went guarantor – it was a lot of money in the 1970s – and I did it up over many years.
“And as time went on, more cars came along.” They sure did. John reeled off an enviable list of cars he’s called his own over the years including an HK Holden Brougham, a 1966 pillarless Chev Impala, a VC Commodore Peter Brock Special, an HJ GTS Monaro, a number of Datsun 1200 utes and a host of ‘domestic’ cars that were more daily drivers than something special. As you’d imagine for someone with
a strong background in the trade, John’s always done most of the work on his cars himself and, for someone who says he’s ‘been tarred with the GM brush’, his eventual acquisition of the Stingray was definitely not out of the blue. John stayed in the motor trade until the mid-1990s when he made a career change, moving into the laundry equipment business but, naturally, his enthusiasm for cars lived on. In fact, when he left his role as the general manager of an air conditioning firm in 2012, he turned to his car at the time, a 1970 VW Type 3. Around the same time his daughter wanted to get into the car scene, so the pair went halves in a 1973 Beetle and ‘I’ve still got half shares in it,’ said John. But in 2017 something new beckoned and, after six months of research, John was on the lookout for a Stingray. June 2019 Motor Trader | 55
But not just any Stingray. John had a few ‘musts’ on his list, including left-hand drive. “I wanted a left-hand drive because that’s how they came out. I wanted the authentic experience of the car,” he said. Tying into that desire was another on the list – auto transmission. “I figured driving on the other side of the car would be enough of a challenge so an auto would be nice and easy.” And he wanted a Stingray from the 197172 period. “I always loved that Coke bottle shape – plus the ‘72 was the last of the cars with a steel bumper. In 1973 they went to a plastic nose,” said John. “I had my heart set on a red one with a black interior too.” As it turned out, he ticked all those boxes except the last. The Stingray John now proudly calls his own popped up in a saved search for an online marketplace on a Sunday night. He called a mate who he rightly thought would be familiar with the car and by the Wednesday John was having a look at it. “I went and had a look, fell in love, and the negotiations began,” he said. “It all
56 | Motor Trader June 2019
happened pretty quickly. My wife Robyn was away at the time and when she got home, I was out . . . we were talking on the phone and I told her I’d moved some furniture around and a few other things, so would she go downstairs and see if she was happy. “I could hear her walk down, pause and then said ‘holy crap, where’d that come from!’.” Happily, she ‘has always enjoyed’ the car, said John. “She wasn’t really into the VW scene but she loves going for a cruise in the Stingray.” The car has the standard ZQ3 350 V8 and Turbo 400 three-speed auto gearbox but sports the domed hood that actually came on Stingrays with the LT-1 engine - a small block V8 also of 350 cu in but that puts out 370hp as opposed to the ZQ3’s 300hp. So, what happened to the idea of a red Stingray? “The colour won me over soon as I saw it. I thought, yeah, you’re coming home with me,” said John. “It had been recently painted, which can be a good or bad thing, and there are a few issues with the paint, but you’d
need an eye for details. It’s a ‘one-metre car’ - get closer and you might see a few issues.” That isn’t something John’s losing any sleep over. “I bought this car to drive. I don’t consider it a show car, we get out and we use it,” he said. “I also didn’t want something I’d have to spend a lot of time working on. “It’s a million-dollar feeling when you drive that car - its just so much fun. You feel like you’re in the Batmobile with those big flared wheel arches. “First time out, we went to Redcliffe for lunch and there were people on the highway hanging out of their cars taking photos. On the way back someone was hanging out of their car with an iPad filming us! It’s a good-looking car and you don’t see one every day.” John’s also hooked on the Stingray’s technology which, for its time, was pretty advanced and even today is impressive, not to mention, well, cool. “There’s so much technology put into the car. I wonder how people came up with idea of some of the workings,” said John. “How the pop-up headlights work via pneumatics for example, or the windscreen wipers. You can’t see the wipers, just like you can’t see the lights - the whole car is so
smooth looking. “To get the wipers to work, once you flick the switch, there’s a panel in front of windscreen that pops up and goes forward to let the wipers come out to do their thing. When its done, they come back to a park position and then the panel closes again. How did they dream that up?” While he doesn’t have a complete history, John knows his car came off Chevrolet’s St Louis, Missouri assembly line in 1972 and was originally painted Targa Blue, which its current colour all but matches. It arrived in Australia in August 2007, but he’s doesn’t know much about what happened next until he bought it from a fellow motoring enthusiast in Cleveland. “I had looked at importing one from the U.S. but there’s a lot of costs involved with that,” said John. “From all my research, I am happy I bought well.” Money aside, it’s clear that this Stingray is doing for John what any classic should do for its owner – bringing a lot of joy and fun into their lives.

qualification. It is something to work towards without it being too expensive. A little know qualification we deliver is the Outdoor Power Equipment qualification. I continue to meet with the Outdoor Power Equipment Association and its members to spread the word on the benefits of this qualification for their workforce and as an entry point into this sector via an apprenticeship. We’ve seen a small increase in the number of apprentices in this sector, but with more promotion I believe this can grow. I recently had the opportunity to speak at the Women on Tools Breakfast held at MTA Queensland. Interestingly, women make up 18.5 per cent of dealership employees, with 8 per cent of women employed in key positions and 91 per cent in office and admin support. However, tradeswomen represent a significantly lower percentage of the automotive workforce with only 2.4 per cent of all female apprentices completing their trade in the last 10 years. It is clear there is a lack of tradeswomen represented in the automotive workforce. So often at MTA Institute we are thinking of ways we can improve the participation rate of females in the trade. Ultimately that comes from industry and workplaces that look at applicants must make a decision on ability. It’s about broadening horizons and opportunities; about bringing down

DVANCES IN HYBRID (HEV) and electric vehicle (EV) technology seem to be happen every day, including in the area of electric motors. While EVs have yet to take off here in Australia, there are plenty of HEVs about and more are on their way, so an understanding of electric motors is important. Hybrids can be ‘strong’ (meaning it can run on just the electric motor, just the combustion engine, or a combination of both), or ‘mild’ and ‘micro’ (where the power for general driving comes from a combustion engine, but a small electric motor can be used to assist the main engine). ‘Strong’ hybrids, such as the Prius, use permanent magnet motors (PM synchronous). Most electric motors work by electromagnetism and on the principle that there is a mechanical force on any wire when it is conducting electricity while in a magnetic field. This mechanical force is manifested in the rotation of a shaft. In an electric motor, the rotating component is the rotor and it is the rotor that turns the shaft. LOBAL MARKETS WERE up again during April, outperforming domestic equities. The European and Japanese markets led the pack, posting gains of 5.5% and 5.0% respectively. The UK market lagged the broader market, posting gains of 2.3% as it continues to operate under a cloud of Brexit uncertainty. The US was again up strongly (S&P 500 +4.0%) as its economy continues to post impressive economic data. The Emerging Markets (MSCI EM +2.6%) returned below its developed counterparts as China lagged following a strong couple of months. Domestically, the S&P/ASX 200 Accumulation Index was up 2.37% in April, continuing the upbeat start to the year. Consumer Staples (7.4%) were the strongest performers during the month as signs of inflation began to emerge in grocery and investors consider the effect of a potential rate cut on the consumer. Information Technology (7.3%) was a top performer as the prospect of lower interest rates increased investors’ risk appetite and also added valuation support. Property (-2.6%) fared the worst over the period, as the risk-on sentiment saw investors move somewhat out of bond proxies and into higher-growth opportunities. This theme also hit Utilities (-0.47%) which has been a point of safety for some investors.
DOMESTICALLY, THE S&P/ ASX 200 ACCUMULATION INDEX WAS UP 2.37% IN APRIL, CONTINUING THE UPBEAT START TO THE YEAR. With favourable monetary policy conditions, we are optimistic about growth prospects in the market and continue to position ourselves in quality companies that we believe can perform throughout the cycle.
