This is an exciting initiative that has the potential to support and grow members’ business opportunities. Nationally, there is growing interest in the platform from investors and businesses. At meetings with most of the interstate motor trades’ colleagues, the 2mota initiative was discussed and the concept well received. Over the coming weeks I envisage there’ll be many positive 2mota stories. More information on this platform can be sourced from the members’ portal on the MTA Queensland website.

customers. It is led by industry and all MTA Queensland members will have a free 12-month subscription. 2mota has numerous functions which will allow customers to request quotes for a vehicle repair or service and to allow businesses to collaborate in ways not previously considered possible. We believe that this will be a game changer for industry, allowing businesses to trade in a space designed for them with an underlying premise of repairing to a standard instead of a price. Primarily, 2mota supports the best interests of member businesses in getting a fair and reasonable price for work done, as well as offering an easy booking service for customers. Additionally, 2mota allows automotive businesses to temporarily hire qualified mechanics and borrow and share tools under commercial arrangements.

In previous From the Desk of the CEO columns, I’ve informed of the appointment to the Queensland Electric Vehicle Council by Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads. The Council is advisory in nature and comprises government, industry and community representatives. Recently, I attended the electric vehicle workshop with Energy Queensland. The purpose was to consider the energy supply, costs, infrastructure required, safety aspects and the support required by energy distributors to predict and sustain energy supply for the uptake of electric vehicles. I note the Commonwealth Government’s Australian Renewable Energy Agency has provided funding to roll out the largest ultra-fast battery electric vehicle charging network along Australia’s highways. Telematics is an issue discussed in various submissions relating to transport technologies such as the Global Positioning System tracking, fleet management, and dispatch solutions. Recently I met with experts in the field to discuss the data gathered through telematics and how business may use that data to determine market strategies and entice consumers to their business.

THE BEST INTERESTS OF MEMBER BUSINESSES IN GETTING A FAIR AND REASONABLE PRICE FOR WORK DONE, AS WELL AS OFFERING AN EASY BOOKING SERVICE FOR CUSTOMERS.”

September 2019 Motor Trader | 5

From the desk of the CEO In the near future, telematics will be a significant part of automotive businesses and the corporate office and our members will need to develop awareness/skills to remain competitive. For all employers, the safety of staff and workers is a priority and an obligation as defined in Queensland’s Work Health and Safety Act. Recently, I attended a prevention forum in Sydney with the focus on programs to reduce risk and cut insurance premiums. The initiatives discussed have potential and I plan to attend further meetings with the aim of considering how the programs may be established in Queensland. Our National Auto Collision Alliance (NACA) (paint and panel) members have endured significant business and technological changes in recent years. Mindful of this and the transition to automated vehicles, I met with insurance companies to build the relationships necessary to stay ahead of the changes that impact the industry. In a positive dialogue, the business opportunities for our NACA members was discussed and some opportunities communicated directly to members in areas where they exist.

STAKEHOLDER MEETINGS The recent MTA Queensland Board meeting hosted the MTA Australia (MTAA) Chairman Neville Gibb, Chief Executive Officer Richard Dudley and Management Committee Chairman Stephen Moir which enabled the guests to outline their new management structure, issues of mutual interest and the national priorities for

industry. The discussion provided great scope to exchange views important at both state and federal level.

AND THE LAST THING Ian Lawrence, the former MTA Institute (MTAI) Board Chairman of Directors, was farewelled at a special board and staff luncheon to thank him for his almost five years of strong professional leadership and service to MTAI. In handing over the reins to newly appointed Chairman Rod Camm, the occasion provided the opportunity to reflect on Ian’s significant contributions to policy reform and curricula changes to meet the demands of both students and employers. A special accolade to Ian’s stewardship is that the MTAI has been announced as a top three finalist for the Queensland Training Awards in the category of Small Training Provider of the Year. All winners will be announced on 14 September at the Queensland Training Awards State Gala Dinner. On 22 August, Rod Camm chaired his first meeting as the MTAI Board Chairman of Directors. His stewardship coincides with the commonwealth, states and territories’ recognition that vocational education and training, and higher education are equal and integral parts of Australia’s post-secondary education system. This is a view we support and expressed in several fora and submissions. Until next month, as Henry Ford, the industrialist and the founder of the Ford motor company said, ‘execute ideas with enthusiasm . . . as it is the bottom of all progress’.

ITIZENS, GOVERNMENTS, BUSINESS and industry, including the automotive value chain, are grappling with the management and disposal of waste. So acute is the waste problem that at the recent Council of Australian Governments (COAG), leaders agreed to develop a holistic strategy to reduce waste. This includes the implementation of a timeline to ban the export of waste and work towards building an economy for Australia to generate highly valued recycled commodities. The focus will be on plastics, decreasing the amount of waste going to landfill, and maximising the capability of the waste management and recycling sector to collect, recycle, reuse, convert and recover waste. MTA Queensland prides itself on being environmentally sustainable and conscious, waging our own war on waste internally led by our Green Team. Now is the time to go beyond our industry achievements and take up the COAG initiative and collaborate with waste technological experts to control and manage the waste generated by the automotive value chain. This is a critical issue that must be addressed - the automotive industry is one of the largest

10 | Motor Trader September 2019

contributors of waste. Statistical evidence states that in 2018 some 800,000 vehicles were sent to landfill. This problem, and others such as tyre disposal, is surmountable by engaging in what is referred to as the ‘circular economy’. This is where products and materials are recycled, repaired and reused rather than thrown away, and one in which waste from one industrial process becomes a valued input into another. Our MTAiQ Innovation Hub has the capacity to attract and engage with the academics and industry experts on opportunities in the waste technologies and management. One entity, the Advisory System for Processing, Innovation and Resource Exchange is targeting the automotive industry due to the massive amounts of waste created by dealers and the servicing and repairing of motor vehicles. Its focus is to create an online marketplace that matches businesses looking to dispose of the waste it creates with remanufacturers, purchasers and recyclers of waste. Our Parts Recycler Members are undergoing transition to the new waste classifications and waste activity thresholds through the Environmental Protection (Waste ERA Framework)

“OUR PARTS RECYCLER

MEMBERS ARE UNDERGOING TRANSITION TO THE NEW WASTE CLASSIFICATIONS AND WASTE ACTIVITY THRESHOLDS THROUGH THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION (WASTE ERA FRAMEWORK) AMENDMENTS REGULATION 2018.”

Amendment Regulation 2018. These changes occurred as a result of a review undertaken by the department between 2014 and 2018. As a result of the review, metal recovery is now regulated by the department and is defined as ERA62 Resource recovery and transfer facility operation and ERA 54 Mechanical waste reprocessing (for those businesses who have a fragmentiser). The fee structure that applies under the new ERA62 and ERA54 is commensurate with the level of environmental risk posed by the activity because of the category of waste being received. As automotive equipment is deemed to be a general waste, most operators of wrecking yards are only required to hold an approval for receiving general waste, rather than requiring a more expensive approval under the review for receiving category 1 or category 2 regulated waste.

ADVOCACY Input into the National Transport Commission’s consultation regulation impact statement In-service safety for automated vehicles was completed and forwarded for consideration. Upcoming is the response to the Franchising Taskforce Issues Paper. This seeks views on seven draft principles emanating from the recommendations in the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Corporations and Financial Services’ Fairness in Franchising Report. All our businesses operating under a franchise model can access the issues paper at https://docs.employment.gov.au/ documents/franchising-taskforce-issuespaper. The Taskforce has advised that to maintain confidentiality of feedback to the Issues Paper, responses will not be published. The closing date is 20 September for submissions.

New laws applying to the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) that increase protections for people sold new and old vehicles come into effect from 1 September 2019. The jurisdictional limit for such matters is now $100,000, raised from $25,000. QCAT will be able to hear matters for both new and old vehicles with numerous defects that reoccur despite repair attempts or where defects have caused a vehicle to be out of service for a prolonged period. QCAT has received numerous enquiries about this legislation. The new laws contained in the Civil and Administrative Tribunal and Other Legislation Act 2019 are a consequence of the Queensland Government’s 2017 State General election commitment. This was ‘improving fairness and providing greater rights for Queenslanders buying a vehicle'. Included in the policy statement was the undertaking to advocate for national ‘lemon’ laws specifically to protect new car buyers. To help you understand what these changes mean you can refer to the new dedicated motor vehicle dispute page on QCAT’s website: https://www.qcat.qld.gov. au/matter-types/motor-vehicle-disputes.

DIVISION NEWS David Fraser, after 16 years as Chair the Queensland Farm and Industrial Machinery Division (QFIMDD), stood down at the Division’s recent Annual General Meeting. In that time, he was a Board Director which included 10 years as the MTA Queensland’s Chairman of the Board. In all, David’s service to the QFIMDD spans more than two decades, providing contributions as a member and in leadership roles. QFIMDD members elected vice-Chair Bruce Sommerfield, Dealer Principal of the South Burnett September 2019 Motor Trader | 11

Policy/Viewpoint Machinery Pty Ltd at Murgon, to the Chairman’s role. He will take his place on the MTA Queensland’s Board of Directors following its Annual General Meeting. The Division’s farm machinery sector has had a tough year. In David’s own words: “2019 is a year that will be recorded in history as a year that farm machinery dealers hope never to witness again.” We wish the incoming Chair Bruce Sommerfield, and that sector, ‘fair seasons’. The Takata airbag recall continues apace. For the Automotive Remarketing Division the recall remains a significant issue, particularly the grasping of the requirements to ensure public safety. The expansion of the brands and models affected by the recall, and the obligations related to replacing the defect air bags has kept the recall at the forefront of the Division’s members' minds. Earlier in the month, with members from the National Auto Collision Alliance Division, I attended Capricorn’s Paint and Panel conference in Melbourne. It brought together industry specialists and suppliers to share their knowledge on technological advancements, product developments and the growth opportunities that exist for repairers.

MEMBER ENGAGEMENT STRATEGY Across the 16 years I’ve been with MTA Queensland, I’ve enjoyed the oneon-one interactions with members to discuss their industry issues or the services provided by the corporate office. The

“THE MEMBER ENGAGEMENT

These include the special deals from our corporate partners. Underway is a noobligation comparison of electricity (Core SME) eftpos (Commonwealth Bank) or insurance (Guard) costs.

FINALLY The year is flying by fast. If you don’t mind, I’ll take this opportunity to jog your memory that on 16 November, at the South Bank Emporium Hotel, the prestigious Industry Awards Dinner will be held. A preview of the finalists for the various awards is in this edition. The Swooper flags available from MTA Queensland have proved to be very popular. They are available free to current financial members and congratulations to members who have swooped up the offer for the limited stock provided on a ‘first in until stock is exhausted basis’. Small change. Big future. Matthew Webster (46) has a long way to go before he hangs up his hat, but he can already picture his retirement. He plans to travel around Australia in a caravan with his wife — once he convinces her that it will be fun! Matt has spent his career in the motor trades and is well on his way to making sure he has enough super to see the country in comfort. He joined MTAA Super as an apprentice in 1989 and now works in an automotive training role in NSW. “I’m really happy I’ve been with MTAA Super. It’s the industry super fund for my trade and has been supporting careers in the automotive industry for over 25 years.” “I’m still a long way off retirement, but I do think about what I will do when I stop working and how I will support myself and my family.”

Matt, like many Australians, is not alone in his concern. Thanks to changing work patterns and increased life expectancy, many of us will spend close to a quarter of our lives as retirees. For some, the age pension alone or relying solely on your employer’s super contributions may not be enough. Leeanne Turner, CEO of MTAA Super, says it’s important that workers do what they can to help grow their super throughout their working lives. “Too many workers are hands-off with their super. Retirement can feel like a lifetime away, so it’s easy to put super on the back burner. But there are a lot of ways you can actively grow your super now.” She says one of the easiest and most effective ways is to make regular extra contributions.

“Small amounts can go a long way. Putting as little as an extra $10 per week into your super can add up to thousands over a 30+ year career.” “This is because of the compounding nature of superannuation. With super, you don’t just grow your employer and voluntary contributions, you also grow the investment returns on these contributions. Every dollar you add to your super account boosts your super’s earning capacity.” Ms Turner also adds that making extra contributions is easy. “It’s simple. Just ask your employer to set up a regular (pre-tax) salary sacrifice into your super, or make direct (after-tax) deposits into your super whenever you can afford to put a little aside.”

AUTO INDUSTRY & MTA QUEENSLAND STALWART SET TO RETIRE

A

LL GOOD THINGS must come to an end. So the saying goes and so it is for the longest-serving member of the MTA Queensland family, Ted Kowalski. The point man on all things to do with employment regulations and industrial relations, Ted has been a stalwart supporter of automotive businesses and an invaluable resource for MTA Queensland members across the state for 35 years. 2019, however, marks his exit from the industry and into well-earned retirement. Ted joined MTA Queensland as Industrial Relations Officer in 1984, when the Association was known as the Queensland Motor Industry Association (QMIA) and the tradesman’s award rate was $270.10 per week (today it’s $862.50 for a mechanic). At that point, the then 35-year-old had already established a career in industrial relations working with the Federated Clerks Union. His arrival at MTA Queensland, however, would mark the start of a relationship with the automotive industry that, over the years, would see Ted write many informative articles for this publication, deliver hundreds of seminars to members across Queensland, answer many 14 | Motor Trader September 2019

thousands of questions concerning employment regulations and other issues, and collectively save member businesses millions of dollars when assisting them with unfair dismissal claims and the like. He has been a constant for many members, always on hand to help navigate the sometimes tricky waters of industrial relations with clear, accurate and honest advice and guidance. It has been, said Ted, a rewarding career and he will miss the interactions with members and colleagues. “While I did see my job with QMIA, as it was then, as a long-term thing, I didn’t imagine it would last over 35 years,” he said. “And the most satisfying part of my time with MTA Queensland has been assisting members with their day-to-day issues. This is particularly true for our smaller members who need to be able to talk to someone who understands their problems. “Leaving MTA Queensland will be a definite wrench and I’ll miss our many loyal members as well as the staff contact. John Dooley

MTA|Q&A Meeting Wheelz and Wheelz Dealer Principal John Dooley for the first time in Townsville leaves you with the impression that here is a man who takes great pride in his profession and enjoys providing a premium car-purchasing service to his customers. A 40-year veteran of the industry, John took the time out of a busy Friday morning to answer some questions about his career in car sales. WORDS: LARA WILDE

LW: What did you do before you started selling cars? JD: Before selling cars, I spent 11 years in the Royal Australian Air Force providing tech support. It was a great experience but there came a time for me to move on.

LW: What was the first car you bought for yourself? 16 | Motor Trader September 2019

JD: In 1974 I bought a brand-new Toyota

Corona for myself. It was a great first car.

LW: How did your career in car sales begin? JD: After leaving the RAAF I worked

selling cars at Carmichael Ford in Townsville. I learnt a lot there and they

Wheelz and Wheelz, Townsville

were very good to me. After about 18 months I decided to go into business for myself and open my own car yard.

LW: What was the most important thing you learnt from your time working at Carmichael Ford? JD: Carmichael Ford taught me that if a

customer has a complaint it is best to simply fix it. It isn’t worth the hassle to argue. I have had a customer come back three years after they bought a car from me complaining about an issue with the car. During that time the customer had not serviced or maintained the vehicle in any way. Rather than argue with them we just fixed it.

LW: What was the first car you sold? JD: I keep a book with a record of

every car that has ever been bought or sold through the Wheelz and Wheelz dealership. The first car I sold was a green Datsun 1200 ute. The customer wanted the little ute to go to golf. That deal made me a profit of $376 in May of 1987.

“AFTER LEAVING THE RAAF

I WORKED SELLING CARS AT CARMICHAEL FORD IN TOWNSVILLE . . . AFTER ABOUT 18 MONTHS I DECIDED TO GO INTO BUSINESS FOR MYSELF AND OPEN MY OWN CAR YARD.” LW: When did you get your dealer licence? JD: My dealer licence was first official

in 1980. Since then I have continued to undertake professional development and self-improvement to stay at the leading edge of the industry.

LW: What advice would you give to a young John Dooley opening a car yard for the first time? JD: My advice to a younger me starting out 40 years ago would be to start investing in superannuation and plan further ahead. When you are young, retirement

seems so far into the future but it is best to start chipping away at it early.

LW: What is the biggest change you have seen in the industry over the last 40 years? JD: The biggest change I have seen is the

level of Government oversight and factory control. The regulations and legislation around used cars and selling practices is far more detailed now. It is good to see so much in place to protect the consumer and make sure they are taken care of.

LW: What involvement with MTAQ have you had? JD: I was on the MTAQ used car committee

when it first formed and I worked vigorously to get the majority of small car dealerships as members. By having most small car dealerships signed up as an MTAQ member we have the ability to lobby and influence government legislation and regulations. I have been a member of MTAQ for a very long time, more than 30 years, and the greatest benefit of my membership is having the team at MTAQ advocate on my behalf.

number of staff from 10 full-time staff to three staff and a team of contractors. Two of the current staff have been with me since 1988. Barry worked with me at Carmichael Ford and then came with me to the first car yard I opened. We have been working together for nearly 40 years!

Since then we have made a few changes to the facility but the location has always been prime. This real estate is so close to the stadium and the city centre and is highly sought after. BENTLEY 3 LITRE EXP 2 W.O. BENTLEY MADE three prototypes in the early years of the company’s existence: EXP 1 (EXPerimental No.1) which first ran in October 1919; EXP 2 built later that year; and EXP 3, known as ‘The Cab’ and which was also W.O. Bentley’s personal car. EXP 2 is the oldest Bentley in existence and made its debut at the 1919 Olympia Motor Show in London. Drawing influence from W.O. Bentley’s pre-war competition experience – when he pioneered the use of aluminium pistons – EXP 2 is also the brand’s first car to win a race, its 129km/h top speed coming via a its 3.0-litre four-cylinder engine.

BENTLEY 4½ LITRE & BENTLEY BLOWER (1927) INTRODUCED IN 1927, the Bentley 4½ Litre was a great success, notching up a victory at Le Mans in 1928 driven by Bentley Boys Woolf Barnato and Bernard Rubin. But perhaps the most famous incarnation of this car was the Bentley Blower – a 4½ Litre with a supercharger stuck on the front. Though the 4½ Litre was a winner, there were those who thought it could do with a boost in power. For W.O. Bentley, that meant more displacement but for others, forced induction via a supercharger looked promising. In 1929, one of the Bentley Boys, Tim Birkin, commissioned a series of 4½ Litre Bentleys to be fitted with a supercharger 24 | Motor Trader September 2019

– a move that saw power shoot up from 10bhp to 175bhp and up to 240bhp for the full racing version. W.O. Bentley did not like the idea but by this time he had lost control of the company and his opposition was overridden and Birkin’s project was approved. The Blower was certainly a fast machine and Birkin set a number of records in versions of it. However, it was not considered reliable in endurance

racing and though two were entered into the 1930 Le Mans race, neither finished. It did make quite a splash at the French Grand Prix that year with Birkin piloting the huge vehicle to second place against a field of lightweight racers. These included that year’s winning car, a Bugatti Type 35. The man behind the Type 35, Ettore Bugatti, was, it is said, moved to say that the Bentley was the “fastest lorry in the world.”

BENTLEY 8 LITRE (1930) THE LAST CAR Bentley to be designed by W.O. Bentley himself, the 8 Litre was the largest and most luxurious Bentley of its time. Powered by an 8-litre, straight-6 engine punching out 230bhp – back then, the largest engine on any car in the UK - the company guaranteed the 8 Litre would be capable of at least 100mph, regardless of the chosen coachwork. BENTLEY CORNICHE (1939) THIS IS THE 1939 Corniche, a unique vehicle rebuilt and restored for Bentley’s centenary. The Corniche introduced ‘Streamlining’ styling that was aimed at delivering speed and performance and pointed to the direction future designs Bentley would introduce - as was evident in the later

R-Type Continental. The original Corniche was lost in France in 1939 at the outbreak of World War II. It was badly damaged in a traffic accident whilst undergoing road tests in August 1939. Sent for repairs, the chassis made it home to the Bentley plant in Derby, but the bodywork was destroyed in a bombing raid on Dieppe later that year. The stunning restoration shows just what a glorious car the Corniche was. Bentley Corniche (1939)

W.O. Bentley

WALTER OWEN (W.O.) BENTLEY BORN IN 1888, W.O. Bentley was an engineering enthusiast. By age 16, he was working as an engineering apprenticeship with the Great Northern Railway company in northern England and he would go on to study tyhe discipline before moving into the car business with his brother Horace importing the French-made DFP (Doriot, Flandrin & Parant) cars, some of which he modified for racing purposes. The story goes that W.O., on discovering a paperweight made of aluminium, was inspired to use the lightweight metal to manufacture a new piston. He would use these new pistons in DFP cars and race those cars to competitive victories in England. The aluminium-based piston technology would also be used in the BR.1 Bentley Rotary engine in British fighter aircraft during WWI. W.O. Bentley was awarded an MBE for his efforts during the war and he also received £8,000 from the Commission of Awards to Inventors – money he was able to use to start his car company in

1919 with the idea that, “We were going to make a fast car, a good car, the best in its class.” According to Bentley, W.O. ‘despised the cars of the late 19th and early 20th century, considering them dangerous, unsophisticated and noisy, so it was no surprise to the people around him that W.O. turned his attention to building cars that would satisfy his own extraordinarily high expectations as a driver, an engineer and as a gentleman’. By September 1921 the first production Bentley car left the factory. That car was the Bentley 3 Litre which featured four valves per cylinder, twin spark plugs, twin magnetos and which made extensive use of aluminium and magnesium . What followed was a decade of headline-making success for Bentley and his company - motor racing success with his 3-litre, 4½-litre and 6.6-litre cars included five Le Mans victories by 1930. However, by the early ‘30s, and despite the critical success of the company’s road-going and track cars, Bentley was in financial distress and the company would find itself owned by arch-rival Rolls-Royce by the end of 1931. W.O. Bentley would remain with the company for a few years before moving on to join British luxury car maker Lagonda. While there, he would oversee several of that company’s technical developments, including the Lagonda Straight-6 engine which, following the purchase of Lagonda by Aston Martin, would find fame as the powerplant of the Aston Martin DB2 and DB3. Bentley would go on to work for engineering firm Armstrong Siddeley before retiring in the 1950s. Walter Owen Bentley died in 1971. September 2019 Motor Trader | 27

A 1958 S1 Continental Flying Spur

S1 CONTINENTAL FLYING SPUR (1957)

THE SUCCESS OF the R-Type saw Bentley continue to offer a Continental model through the 1950s. The S1, launched in 1955 had a 180bhp 4.9-litre straight-six and in something of a twist, coachbuilder Mulliner produced a four-door version to go with the traditional two-door model.

BENTLEY MULSANNE IN THE '70S and early '80s – and then owned by Rolls-Royce - Bentley was in something of a slump. However, this began to change with the introduction of the Mulsanne in 1980. Essentially a variation of the RollsRoyce Silver Spirit which came out at the same time and with which it shared

28 | Motor Trader September 2019

the same 6.75-litre V8 engine, the development of the Mulsanne into the Mulsanne Turbo in 1982 and then the potent Turbo R in 1985 saw interest in Bentley grow and the company reclaim its status as a maker of truly luxurious, performance cars. The last variation of this car was the 1998 Turbo RT Mulliner - a 420hp monster that could hit 0-100km/h in six seconds and had a top speed of 270km/h.

BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT (2003) VIDEO: THE CONTINENTAL GT

This four-door Continental – called the Flying Spur – was a success and spurred other coachbuilders to offer four-door versions of their own to customers. Of a total 432 S1 Continentals produced, Mulliner created the coachwork for 217. This model pretty well marked the end of the coachbuilding era as Mulliner was absorbed into Bentley in 1959. From this point on, Bentleys were all built in-house. The S1 Series Bentley Continental GT3 was the last to use the 180bhp, 4.9-litre straight-six engine. That engine was replaced by a 6320cc V8, the ancestor of the engine that powers today’s Mulsanne model.

THE GT CONTINENTAL is historically a little special as it was the first Bentley to be released under VW management. It was, and is, a great car. Brilliant to look at and luxurious, the Continental GT was launched with the VW W12 engine and models have included a convertible, a four-door called the Flying Spur, the GT Speed, the Continental Supersports and the 572bhp, limited edition GT3-R. The Continental GT is also the basis for Bentley’s presence in motorsport – the GT3. The GT3 is powered by the 4-litre Bentley twin-turbo V8 and in 2019, Bentley will challenge for titles in the Intercontinental GT Challenge, the Blancpain GT Series, the World Challenge America and the British GT Championship.

BENTLEY EXP SPEED 8 IN 2003, BENTLEY returned to the top of the Le Mans podium after 73 years with this, the Speed 8. Sourcing some of its technology – including its modified 600bhp, 4-litre turbocharged V8 engine – from Audi, the

Speed 8 had run for a couple of years before development reached the point where it was good enough to take top spot at the world’s most famous endurance race. The Speed 8 represented a return to the place where Bentley had made its name and established itself as a world-leading performance car brand. While the Speed 8 program ended within a few years, Bentley remains a force in motorsport with the GT3.

Woolf Barnato and Tim Birkin won Le Mans in 1929

THE BENTLEY BOYS WHEN YOU THINK about the early days of motor racing, what springs to mind might be images of gallant young chaps – playboys, adventurers and mavericks - leaping into powerful cars for a quick dash around a circuit before retiring for champagne and cigars at the local pub. There was a sense of the nonconformist about those early racers – of wealthy young men with a taste for new experiences keen to test themselves in a new sport that was both dangerous and fast. There may be no group more connected to this idea then the wonderfully named Bentley Boys, a group of young men who, along with company founder W.O. Bentley, achieved great fame for their racing exploits in the 1920s and 1930s. They included future Bentley company boss Woolf Barnato, former fighter pilot Henry ‘Tim’ Birkin, medical doctor Joseph Dudley ‘Benjy’ Benjafield, aviator Glen Kidston, journalist Sydney ‘Sammy’ Davis, Frank Clement, John Duff, and the Australian racer and pilot Bernard Rubin, amongst a few others. Bentley’s victories at Le Mans in

the '20s and '30s cemented the Bentley Boys legend. In 1924, John Duff and Frank Clement won in a Bentley 3 Litre; Dudley Benjafield and Sammy Davis took top spot in 1927, also in a Bentley 3 Litre; Woolf Barnato and Bernard Rubin stood atop the podium in 1928 after winning in the Bentley 4½ Litre; and Barnato would three-peat after winning in 1929 and 1930 in the Bentley Speed Six, the first time with Birkin, and with Glen Kidston in 1930. While racing circuits were where Bentley made its name, the Bentley Boys’ exploits off the racetrack helped to keep the company in the headlines. One famous story concerned the 1930 race between a Bentley Speed Six driven by Barnato and the ‘Le Train Bleu’ express locomotive. Back then, the express train ferried wealthy types from the port of Calais on the north coast of France to the Mediterranean resort towns in the south and back again. Barnato claimed he could beat the train from Cannes in the south back to Calais, and not only beat it but be at the bar of his London club (meaning a ferry trip across the Channel had to be navigated too) by the time the train reached the Calais station. Incredibly, he did so with four minutes to spare. Bentley paid a price for this feat (one that was worth paying one would think). Apparently, in response to his obvious speeding on public roads, the French authorities fined Barnato a pretty penny and Bentley itself was excluded from the 1930 Paris Auto Show. Boys will be boys. BENTLEY BENTAYGA IN RECENT YEARS, or since the late ‘90s anyway, SUVs have become incredibly popular. Big and comfy, they are everywhere, replacing the big sedans and station wagons that used to fill the family car role. This growth in popularity didn’t go unnoticed by the luxury car makers and now you can buy an SUV model from just about any brand you can think of – BMW has a whole series of X models to choose from, Porsche has the Cayenne, Lamborghini the Urus, Rolls-Royce the Cullinan and even Ferrari appears to have bowed to the inevitable and announced that it will deliver the Purosangue

THE FUTURE IT’S HIGHLY LIKELY that Bentley will continue to set incredibly high standards for automotive luxury and performance well into the future. In recent years, the company’s concept cars have shown that it is well prepared to embrace the technology advances the auto industry has been made and those that are predicted to come down the pipeline. If its most recent concept – the EXP 100 VIDEO: THE BENTLEY EXP 100 GT: THE FUTURE OF GRAND TOURING | BENTLEY

That’s potent stuff.

MULLINER FOR MANY OF the early automotive manufacturers, building a car meant building what was known as a rolling chassis. This was the mechanics of the car - the engine, drivetrain, suspension, wheels and everything else required for it to move. The bodywork and the interior, on the other hand, were the domain of the coachbuilder, specialist firms of craftsmen who would design and build bodies to a customer’s demands that would then grace the rolling chassis. Plenty of well-known companies were originally established as coachbuilding businesses including Tickford, Pininfarina and, of course, Holden. In Bentley’s case, the coachbuilder most associated with the company was Mulliner, which first built bodies for Bentley with a two-seater 3 Litre, exhibited at the Olympia Show in London in 1923. It would go on to be closely aligned with Bentley and its most famous and luxurious cars until 1959, when the age of the independent coachbuilder was coming to an end and the company officially became part of Bentley Motors. The Mulliner name lives on in the Bentley brand, however, and it continues to be used to personalise and modify cars to the requests of customers and is the mark of the most luxurious Bentley models. L

AST MONTH, I mentioned the findings from the J.D. Power Mobility Confidence Index survey which highlighted some public concern surrounding self-driving and battery electric vehicles. Since then, the respected research and analytics company has revealed the results of another survey, its 2019 U.S. Tech Experience Index Study that looks at how vehicle owners feel about the technology – particularly the tech regarding safety and ‘infotainment’ - that is now becoming standard across new car models. Once again, there are some very interesting results, including that some alerts from Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are reportedly so irritating to some drivers that they disable the systems and may try to avoid them on future vehicle purchases. Other interesting findings include that built-in apps are not meeting users’ expectations. Among the 29 per cent of owners who have discontinued the use of a built-in apps, 46 per cent said they “do not need it” and 18 per cent say they “have another device that performs the function better.” The research highlights that owner satisfaction with their vehicle technology

Power states that ‘Automakers looking to drive loyalty need to provide a highly satisfying tech usage experience’. As with last month’s Mobility Confidence Index, the story here is there is still work to be done to make the public fully accept the potential of autonomous vehicles. For car makers, getting the in-car technology right is vitally important to cultivate brand loyalty. Interesting times. You can read more on that report by clicking HERE.

OUT AND ABOUT As always, it has been a busy month for the team at MTAiQ. We attended the latest INNOV8 Logan Meetup – now a regular event on our calendar – that involved a Q & A panel session with lawyers from Redchip Lawyers and patent and trademark attorneys IP Gateway.

Topics covered, not surprisingly, included IP protection and capital raising – topics of interest to all start-ups and businesses looking to get a foothold and grow in any industry. The team also attended a TEDxUQ event at the University of Queensland Advanced Engineering department. For those who don’t know about TEDx, it is a program designed to bring people together to share stories and ideas and spark discussion and connections. These local TEDx programs are affiliated to the wider TED organisation, which is a non-profit ‘devoted to ideas worth spreading’. The TEDxUQ event included speakers on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education and climate change, data science and artificial intelligence. Down on the Gold Coast meanwhile, SheEO Gold Coast held a meeting to discuss the SheEO model activation opportunities. SheEO, you may recall, is an organisation and community of women that looks to fund and support women-led ventures. The idea is to bring together 500 women – or Activators – in each locality cohort. The members of each cohort contribute $1100 to a pooled fund that is then loaned at 0 per cent interest to five women-led ventures. The loans are paid back over five years and then loaned out again. It’s a fascinating and exciting concept. Also attended was the Ipswich City Council New Website Launch Focus Group, organised to help advance the economic development of Ipswich and help the council better understand the informational needs of enterprise businesses when they are considering investing in Ipswich. Ipswich was also the location for a couple of events at which Queensland’s Chief Entrepreneur Leanne Kemp discussed a variety of innovation and entrepreneurship issues, including

entrepreneurship education, the value of tech and entrepreneur skills, using technology to create economic value systems and solving the big issues, and collaborative entrepreneurship. The Chief Entrepreneur has been on a tour of Queensland through August with the intention of connecting with regional start-ups, entrepreneurial talent, investors, students and innovators across the state. The tour saw Leanne Kemp visit more than 20 towns and communities and it is this sort of initiative that will draw people together, give extra impetus to collaborative efforts and bring new ideas and concepts to life.

GOT AN IDEA? LET US KNOW! Talking about bringing new ideas and concepts to life, we know that nothing stands still, certainly not in our industry. Adapt, evolve, transform – all words that are used to describe how we should be thinking about the change and disruption we know is coming and are already feeling. MTAiQ’s objective is to tackle all this head on by helping the wider industry and established automotive businesses adjust successfully to those developments while also assisting start-ups and entrepreneurs get new concepts and ideas off the ground. Our contacts across the innovation and business landscape include governments, members of industry and academia, and other forward-looking organisations. All of these make MTAiQ a strong partner for anyone with a grand idea or innovative product that could make a real difference to our industry as we move into a new decade that will be marked by monumental change. ROLL OUT TO START ON ULTRA-FAST EV CHARGING NETWORK

T

HE AUSTRALIAN RENEWABLE Energy Agency (ARENA) has announced $15 million in funding to Evie Networks to roll out the largest ultrafast battery electric vehicle (EV) charging network along Australia’s highways. The funding will support the first phase of the $50.2 million intercity highway charging network with 350 kW ultra-fast chargers located along the ‘National Land Transport Network’ and beyond. A total of 42 charging sites, all powered by renewable energy, will be installed at roadside service centres connecting Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney and Brisbane, plus destination charging in Far North Queensland, Tasmania and Perth. Construction has commenced on the first site north of Brisbane, with 23 sites to be operational in the first year. ARENA says that each of the 42 sites be able to charge two cars concurrently and will enable the typical EV available in 38 | Motor Trader September 2019

Australia to charge 100km within 15 minutes using Tritium chargers. All sites will be open access with charging plugs suitable for all EV models available, including Tesla with an adaptor. Spacing of sites is designed to align with Australian geography, population areas, highways and to be well within range of even the most affordable EV models. “Evie’s fast charging stations across the country will help to increase the supply and adoption of electric vehicles by building the charging infrastructure in key areas along major roads,” said ARENA CEO Darren Miller. “Reducing range anxiety will encourage EV uptake by giving motorists confidence they can get where they want to go - even on long road trips.” Last year, ARENA also committed $6 million for Chargefox’s ultra fast charging network which will include 21 charging sites from Adelaide to Brisbane, around Perth and in Tasmania. Evie Networks’ CEO Chris Mills said: “We have estimated that Australia needs around 350 sites to cover all the highways that make up Australia’s National Land Transportation Network. While many consumers will charge at home, they will also need plenty of fast chargers in towns, suburbs and cities. There are currently around 6,500 petrol stations. This is just the beginning of the infrastructure build out.”

EXOSKELETON SET TO ALLEVIATE BURDEN IN OVERHEAD WORK

H

YUNDAI MOTOR GROUP has developed A Vest EXoskeleton (VEX), a wearable robot created to assist industrial workers who spend long hours working in overhead environments. We’ve seen this type of technology before – Ford also has one in the works – and it’s a certainty that more will be developed and adopted. They are designed to enhance productivity and reduce fatigue by imitating the movement of human joints to boost load support and mobility – a win-win for everyone. With the VEX, which weighs just 2.5kg, the user places their arms through the shoulder straps of the vest, then fastens the chest and waist buckles. The back section is adjustable to fit a variety of body sizes, while the degree of force assistance can be adjusted over six levels. The VEX is targeted at production-line workers whose job is primarily overhead, such as those fitting brake tubes and attaching exhausts. A trial held at two plants in the U.S. was, the company

says, successful in assisting workers and boosting productivity and both plants incorporated VEX systems in their production lines. The VEX is expected to go into commercial production in December. September 2019 Motor Trader | 39

JAGUAR LAND ROVER DEVELOPING IMMERSIVE 3D IN-CAR EXPERIENCE

T

HE WAY WE interact with the world around us is going to be very different in the near future. Head-up displays are already becoming commonplace and the development of this technology doesn’t stop. Jaguar Land Rover reports that it is developing a next-generation head-up display technology that could beam realtime safety information in front of the driver, and allow passengers to stream 3D movies direct from their seats. The company says its engineers are working on a new 3D display to project safety alerts, such as lane departure, hazard detection, and sat nav directions, and to reduce the effect of poor visibility in miserable weather or light conditions. Augmented reality would add the perception of depth to the image by mapping the messages directly onto the road ahead. The company says that the technology

could also be used by passengers to watch 3D movies. Head and eye tracking technology would follow the user’s position to ensure they can see 3D pictures without the need for special glasses. The research was undertaken in partnership with the Centre for Advanced Photonics and Electronics (CAPE) at University of Cambridge. “Development in virtual and augmented reality is moving really quickly. This consortium takes some of the best technology available and helps us to develop applications suited to the automotive sector,” said Valerian Meijering, Human Machine Interface & Head-Up Display Researcher for Jaguar Land Rover. “Not only does it provide a much richer experience for customers, but it also forms part of our Destination Zero roadmap; helping us to move towards a safer, more intuitive and smarter future, for everybody.” September 2019 Motor Trader | 41

HYDROGEN FUEL CELL VEHICLES RECEIVE BOOST FROM QLD GOVT

T

HE QUEENSLAND GOVERNMENT has announced a commitment to take-up hydrogen-powered Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) for their vehicle Fleet. Premier Anastacia Palaszczuk said the FCEVs would be integrated into QFleet as part of the government’s Hydrogen Industry Strategy 2019-2024 which is pushing for hydrogen production in Australia as a clean energy that can provide jobs and new export opportunities. “We’re ensuring Queensland is at the forefront of renewable hydrogen production in Australia,” said Ms Palaszczuk. “Globally, the race is on for hydrogen to be a new way of transporting clean energy that can provide secure jobs, new industries and export earnings.” The trial will include FCEV’s from Toyota and Hyundai.

42 | Motor Trader September 2019

VIDEO: INTRODUCING HYUNDAI NEXO

“The FCEVs are a highly visible way that we can demonstrate the range of applications of renewable hydrogen and raise community awareness about the safe and sustainable use of hydrogen,” said Mick de Brenni, Minister for Housing and Public Works. “We are looking forward to including Hyundai and Toyota vehicles in the trial as they are at the forefront of fuel cell technology.”

Minister for State Development Cameron Dick said that the infrastructure in Queensland, combined with export facilities, solar resources and land mass, created very favourable criteria for the establishment of a hydrogen industry. He added that gas and engineering company BOC would supply the renewable hydrogen to fuel the vehicles and install a hydrogen refuelling station at QUT, Brisbane. BOC recently commenced a Queenslandfirst renewable hydrogen project at its production facility in Bulwer Island, Brisbane. “The Palaszczuk Government has been working with BOC and QUT to deliver both the renewable hydrogen plant at Bulwer Island and the development of a hydrogen vehicle refuelling station in Brisbane, which will allow the FCEVs to be integrated into QFleet,” said Minister Dick. The move to back FCEV technology is supported by MTA Queensland. “We have been actively supporting the potential for hydrogen for the last few years, particularly as a new fuel source,” said Dr Brett Dale, CEO of MTA Queensland Group. “Earlier this year we engaged industry experts at our Carmageddon symposium to lead panel discussions on new fuel technologies. Hyundai Senior Manager Scott Nargar attended this event and showcased the Hyundai NEXO FCEV, which only emits water as a by-product. “The hydrogen is dispensed in a similar way to petrol, where a car enters a service station and refuels in approximately the same amount of time as a petrol car. The energy produced by hydrogen drives the electric motor. This is an advantage over the time taken for an Electric Vehicle (EV) to charge.” To complement this, CSIRO has developed technology that can assist with the safe and effective transportation of hydrogen via its conversion from

ammonia. The ammonia can be transported using existing infrastructure and this creates another commercial opportunity, enabling Australia to become a renewable energy leader. “The automotive industry is pleased to see the government’s commitment to supporting all forms of clean fuel, and in particular hydrogen development, to compliment a wider mix of options,” said Dr Dale. “We do not foresee the push for FCEVs having any negative impact on the EV market. It would actually complement the variety of options available for a consumer. The higher the uptake of new, clean fuel technologies the better for business opportunity, jobs, new skill sets and sustainability in providing for the world’s future energy needs. Indeed, the technology has great potential, but presently the cost is prohibitive and further development is essential to reduce cost in the future.”

HYUNDAI REVEALS ELECTRIC SCOOTER WITH 20KM RANGE VIDEO: LAST MILE MOBILITY FOR THE FUTURE, HYUNDAI· KIA 'VEHICLE-MOUNTED ELECTRIC SCOOTER' REVEALED

W

E’VE HEARD QUITE a bit recently about the concept of first- and last-mile mobility – the term used to describe getting people from a train station, bus stop or car park, to their final destination. There are plenty of companies having a stab at solutions to this issue, and the Hyundai Motor Group has revealed the latest version of its electric scooter concept. The model features a 10.5 Ah lithium battery and the company says it can achieve a top speed of 20km/h and has enough power for around 20km of travel on a single charge. The key here is the integration of the scooter with future Hyundai and Kia vehicles. When mounted on a vehicle, the scooter is charged automatically using electricity produced while driving. “This is the vehicle-mounted personal scooter which could be featured in future Hyundai Motor Group vehicles,” said DongJin Hyun, head of Hyundai Motor Group Robotics Team. “We want

44 | Motor Trader September 2019

to make our customers’ lives as easy and enjoyable as possible. Our personal electric scooter makes first- and lastmile commuting a joy, while helping to reduce congestion and emissions in city centres.” The scooter weighs in at around 7.7kg and has a compact tri-folding design. It features a digital display that shows battery status and speed while, for nighttime riding, it is equipped with two front LED headlights, and two rear tail lamps. Hyundai says that further development plans include installing a regenerative braking system that will increase the scooter’s range by seven per cent.

A

T THE END of the day, it’s family and friends that matter. Just ask Leighton Wright, whose gorgeous 1969 Chrysler Valiant hardtop you see today is the result of a 24-year project. Leighton, from southeast Queensland, was born into a Chrysler family and began this journey thanks to a VF hardtop he bought from his uncle Terry Rafter all those years ago. “We did a restoration on that car, but it didn’t all quite go to plan and it was sidelined,” said Leighton, the workshop supervisor at Browns Plains MG Service. “My mother, Madonna Wright, sadly is in the late stage of Alzheimer’s and was also a Chrysler fan – she had a Charger at one stage. While she couldn’t remember my name, she could remember the car, so we decided about five years ago to get on and do a good restoration of the hardtop.” The ‘we’ he refers to is partner Melissa and mates Daniel Wiese and Jack Van Der Lann. Throughout the process, these 48 | Motor Trader September 2019

three, along with others in a variety of trades, were instrumental in keeping the project going with Leighton, despite many twists and turns that started when that car proved not to be practical for restoration. The decision was made to find another Valiant. “We found this one on the Gold Coast. It had been in a shed since 1982, had just 82,000 miles on it and a genuine 770,” he said. “We towed it to G&L Motor Repairs & Performance at Rocklea where I was working at the time and the plan was to basically just get it going and get on with it for mum. However, the more we looked into it the more rust we found. “With the help of Daniel, Ben and

Reece it was stripped to the bare shell – every nut, bolt, washer and panel came off and it went on to a rotisserie to be sandblasted. “It then went to father and son duo Gary and Craig Erickson of G and C Erickson Panel Repairs to be painted. And I can’t praise them enough; they did an incredible job. “We turned all of that around pretty quickly too, it was just three months to have all that done.” With the car back at G&L, the front end was put back in and it was taken home as a bare carcass - no interior, no wiring and no motor. “We then started on the original motor, a 318, but soon found it was unsalvageable. It was well and truly seized and not worth

rescuing,” said Leighton. Likewise, a 360 from an old Chrysler that Leighton had sitting at home had bores corroded through to the water jacket. “I went on the hunt and found Mick McDonald from Bundaberg had the block we were after – a 360 LA, bored to 70 thou with a four-inch-stroke crank, so it’s 416 cubes,” he said. “Mick and I became mates through the build and he also did the transmission, a 904 Torqueflite. It's still an auto but with a shift kit through it. It’s pretty lively. “We got the engine back to the workshop at G&L, started assembling it and got it home around Christmas two years ago. “Then we decided ‘why not have a Holley Terminator EFI in it’. “I went through the entire factory wiring loom, stripped it back to nothing, repaired it, integrated the EFI into it, and we located the msd box under the dash and the battery to the boot. The ECU is behind the heater box. You would never know it was there.” The big day came last Christmas when September 2019 Motor Trader | 49

the engine was fired up for the first time. “It didn’t miss a beat,” said Leighton. “It was flawless and fired second pop.” Now the team turned their attention to the rest of the car. “We were just going to do car seat covers as mum was not well and we really wanted to get the car on the road. But the more we pushed, the more it pushed back,” said Leighton. “One of the seats got torn going back in so we looked around for a good trimmer. Most guys don’t want to know about old cars, but Steve Oats from Extreme Hoodlinings & Motor Trimming took it on and was amazing. “He was here over five hours doing the hoodlining. I wanted to pay him more for his time, but he wouldn’t hear of it. “When the time came to do the seats, I knew where to go. His work’s been flawless. “We were only going to do the front seats but when they were done, they were so good we just had to have the rear done too.” The team kept working away and solving problems – like locating the fuel pump at the rear of the car and fabricating a neat looking box to protect it – until about

50 | Motor Trader September 2019

two months ago when the Valiant, after a wheel alignment at ProTrac Suspension at Hillcrest where they also set the rear springs, drove under its own power. “That was the first time that car had turned a wheel on its own since 1982,” said Leighton. Soon after, they decided to enter it in the AutoOne car show where, much to their surprise and delight, it won its class. The very next day it was picked as runner-up in best engine bay at Mopar

Sunday at Willowbank – no mean feat given the level of competition at Queensland’s premier Chrysler event. While Leighton’s mum is yet to have a ride in the car – he is hopeful she will be well enough to do so soon – and there are still a few things they plan to do to the car, to say Leighton’s a happy man is a massive understatement. “We haven’t put it on the dyno yet, but I reckon it will make about 400hp at the tyres,” he said. “It’s a bit of an animal. It

purrs like a kitten sitting on 100km/h but give it a squeeze and then hang on. “We plan to run it at the drags at some stage and we’ll be aiming for high 11s. But it was never built to be a show car or a drag car – everything we did was to create a reliable cruiser for the family, and I think we’ve done that.” As Leighton explained, the project hasn’t been smooth sailing. “There have been so many times during the build I was ready to give up, ready to sell the car and move on,” he said. “But any time I felt like that, Mel, Daniel and Jack would push me on – and we got there. “I don’t have a lot of money, and it’s as simple as this – without their support and skill, we’d never have got this car where it is today. “It’s not been an easy build and we’ve all learnt so much along the way. “Now, to be able to jump in it and drive it . . . it’s just magic.”

It’s time to re-look at your business plan! It goes without saying that failure to research and plan is one of the leading causes of business failure – for new and existing businesses. As lawyers advising small businesses, we always stress the importance of continuous research, refinement and improvement when growing your business, especially regarding your business plan. Remember, the business structures and agreements you had drafted at the start of your business journey may no longer reflect the current state of play. So, taking the time to look at them in detail and determine if they reflect where you are at in your business lifecycle will be important if you are looking to best position your business for growth. Why look at re-writing your business plan? Well, it might help you look back and reflect on what has worked and what has not since you commenced your business operations.

Some of the key questions that should be addressed when reviewing your business plan include: • Are your operational and financial systems working optimally? • Does your plan consider any new capital expenditure? • Is your marketing plan reflective of your current business objectives? • Have you updated your profit and loss forecasts? • What does your business structure involve and is it reflective of your current position? • Have you updated your expected cashflow analysis? GENERAL MANAGER MTA INSTITUTE

W

E RECENTLY HELD another MTA Institute graduation evening and it was fantastic to see graduates attend with their family and friends to celebrate such a great milestone. The automotive industry continues to innovate and change, and to try and keep up you must keep learning and have a thirst to be educated. Overall, the industry has about 5,888 apprentices in Queensland training in light vehicle, heavy vehicle, auto electrical, underbody, paint and panel, outdoor power equipment, motorbikes, mobile plant, agricultural and parts interpreting. Unfortunately, a significant amount of this cohort is lost through cancellations and various other reasons each year. To finish an apprenticeship, it takes a lot of commitment and dedication. It was great to see these graduates come and celebrate their achievement and now go into careers in the automotive industry. Well done! Recently, the State government announced free apprenticeships for

under 21s. This offers fully subsidised training for the majority of automotive apprenticeship qualifications. Basically, for apprentices who are under 21 years old and commence on or after 1 July 2019 in an automotive qualification, there will be no more co-contribution fee required. This also goes for eligible apprentices in training as at 1 July 2019 in an automotive qualification. They must be aged under 21 on 1 July 2019 to be eligible. However, the fee-free training will only apply for units commenced on or after 1 July 2019. For all the details, see https://desbt.qld.gov.au/ training/training-careers/incentives/ freeapprenticeships The MTA Institute team is also excited about the upcoming 2019 Queensland Training Awards' State Gala Dinner on Saturday 14 September at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre in South Brisbane. We are a finalist in the Small Training Provider of the Year category and it’s a great honour to be nominated. Without all the trainers and admin staffs' commitment and contributions every single day we wouldn’t have made it this far. I hope to tell you good news in the next GM’s Perspective!

2019 MTA QUEENSLAND COMMUNITY AWARD HERTZ MOUNT ISA REGIONAL TOWNS ARE renowned for their strong sense of community and of everybody getting stuck in when things need to be done. The team at Hertz Mount Isa know a thing or two about this and to say that business owners Terence and Alison Dowling are involved with their community would be something of an understatement. The couple support events and activities through sponsorship, volunteering, donations and a variety of other initiatives that is almost too long to list. But we’ll give it a try. You’ll find the Hertz Mount Isa name linked as supporters of all manner of local events, including the annual Camooweal Drovers Festival, the Mount Isa Show, the Boulia Market Day, and the Mount Isa City Council Music Festival, amongst many others. Support of other local small business comes through membership of Commerce North West, the bi-annual Minex mining and trade expo, the Buy Local campaign gift cards and Buy Local Support for Local Business television advertising, and other initiatives. Terence and Alison are members of Rotary and active volunteers, giving up their time to support the annual Mount Isa Mines Rodeo, as well as assisting at school fetes, the School of the Air, Lifeflight, RFDS, Mount Isa Multicultural Festival, and the Regional Schools Encouragement Awards. Alison has also volunteered to do historical research for the Mount Isa Rodeo Museum and Hall of Fame projects, and currently volunteers with the Young 74 | Motor Trader September 2019

It's an exhaustive list of community interactions and it comes as no surprise to learn Alison has been recognised for her work in the community before – she was presented the Customer Service Hero Award Community Sector at the North West Business Awards in 2018. “Businesses in general should look at being involved in their communities as a form of ‘reciprocity’ - to support the people who support the business, so that overall everyone in the community gains a better quality of life outcome,” said Alison. Of being named an MTA Queensland Community Award finalist, Alison said the whole Hertz team extremely proud. “We were absolutely thrilled and very happy to share this news with our staff those who support our business. It quite made our day!” she said. “Whilst we do not look for publicity or thanks, it is nice to know that our efforts in helping to make a positive difference in the community are recognised by others within our industry.”

KEEMA IS one of southeast Queensland’s best-known dealership groups and established the Keema Children’s Foundation in 2015 with a mission to create a better life for children living in foster care who have experienced abuse and neglect. The Foundation’s Little Stars Kids program runs two key initiatives to assist these children. The first is the Little Stars Kids Case Program which involves children living in long-term foster care attending four camps per year where they have a chance to experience a positive and supportive community, build self-esteem, make friends and rebuild trust by engaging in a variety of fun and varied experiences. The second is called Cuddle Cases. Children entering foster care because of abuse and neglect often leave home with nothing, or a plastic bag with a few belongings, and wait to be assigned a foster family. Little Stars Kids provide a Cuddle Case to these children at this traumatic time. The case includes a teddy bear, pyjamas, activity books, a cushion and handmade quilt and other comfort items including lunch box and drink bottle for school. “Keema has strong family values behind us which filters throughout our business

and giving back through helping children is something we feel very strongly about,” said Lisa Honeychurch Van Riel, CEO and Founder of Keema Children’s Foundation. “We believe that children who have experienced abuse and neglect are often overlooked when it comes to receiving help and assistance. The relevant government department is under-resourced and underfunded and foster children cannot be identified publicly so their needs are often hidden. These children are some of the most vulnerable members of our community and they rely on us, as adults, to keep them safe. “As an organisation, we are committed to doing what we can to help. We see the huge difference these programs make and are passionate about continuing to grow the programs within Queensland to help these vulnerable and precious children.” It was, said Lisa, a thrill for Keema to be recognised for the work they do. “We were over the moon to hear that we have been named as a finalist in the MTA Queensland Community Awards, particularly because it is wonderful to be able to highlight the needs of the children in our community who have experienced abuse and neglect, and who really need a helping hand, in a public forum such as this.”

Classic Supplies & Services in Townsville were awarded the MTA Queensland Community Award for their incredible involvement with their community. The team are back in 2019. In a career that has seen her move from pre-vocational student to apprentice to business owner to industry leader in a little over 15 years, Sharine is something of an inspiration and the level of involvement in the community is astonishing. Sharine and her team help PTSD sufferers and veterans, organise all manner of fundraising events, offer training days on basic bike maintenance and a host of other activities. The team is known for modifying bikes for disabled riders so they can regain some mobility and independence and have built a BBQ trailer which is available for hire, with the funds raised going to local projects. Part of this involvement involves the Leather ‘n’ Lace Ride, an event that encourages participants to step out of their comfort zone, get on a bike and enjoy the sense of freedom biking provides. “To help those girls move towards gaining their own independence, and show they can put their trust in someone again and not even realise it because they are enjoying themselves is very rewarding,” said Sharine. While Sharine might be surprised at the nomination, it’s little wonder that the R.H.D. team are once again finalists in the MTA Queensland Community Award category. “Winning three years ago was phenomenal, and to be a finalist this year is incredible,” she said. “This is a lifestyle choice for me and being able to give back, to help people enjoy the lifestyle, to get back on a bike, to enjoy life again - that’s why I do things.”

IF YOU WERE able to travel back in time a few years, you probably wouldn’t find too many people talking seriously about electric vehicles playing a major role in the future of transportation. However, there were a few enthusiasts around and even one or two who could really see the potential in the technology. One of those people was Graeme Manietta, owner of Suzi Auto Parts in Brisbane, who not only saw the potential of EVs but was prepared to take a chance and build a business around the tech. Graeme Manietta Graeme established OZ-DIY Electric Vehicles in 2011 with a mission to recycle old cars into as a complete drop-in drive unit for electric vehicles, and started that mission common cars such as the Commodore or with three Suzuki Swifts destined for Falcon; a drive unit for a light aircraft, and the scrapyard. He now counts some very performance ‘chopper’-style motorcycle interesting cars amongst the conversion conversions. MTA Queensland Industry Awards Finalists

WE ALL KNOW that in some form or another our future will be electrified. Name a vehicle manufacturer and you can be certain that at least one electric vehicle is in its model range or on its drawing board. How best to charge these vehicles in an effective and efficient manner has been a question Rikesh Ram and many other creative-thinking individuals have been working on for some years. Through his companies Australian Electric Infrastructure Transport and smartGEN, Rikesh has been working on implementing a wireless charging infrastructure to charge electric buses and tram systems, and developing an EV charging station that is designed to generate power through renewable energy. The wireless charging technology, developed by an overseas university, was launched in 2010 and that year was named a ‘Best 50 invention’ by TIME Magazine. It comprises 150m long electric strips embedded in the road surface that transfer energy to EVs that pass over them. Enabling EVs to charge while on the move not only means that range is no longer an issue but could see EVs use much smaller batteries as heavy, long-range batteries would no longer be required. The smartGEN charging station is designed to use both solar and Rikesh Ram

wind to generate renewable energy which it then stores in an integrated battery storage system. The design would allow the stored energy to be used to charge all manner of battery-powered items, including EVs, thanks to multiple charging connectors that include 3-pin plus, USB charge points and EV charging plugs. “Our innovations are the key to enable the uptake of EVs,” said Rikesh. “With smartGEN we are looking to disrupt how EVs are going to be charged with renewable energy and be at no cost to EV owners except for a low annual membership fee. Imagine a world where you can buy a car and your fuel would be free forever. “AEIT will take this further so that you won't have to stop and plug in your car to charge - you will be able to charge it as you drive,” he added. “Imagine driving down the highway and to top up your ‘fuel’ all you need to do is drive onto the lane which has our wireless charging infrastructure. You will be able to top up your battery giving you that extra range needed, and you will be able to do this throughout your journey. “The benefits of our technology will be to reduce transport emissions, reduce the fuel costs we all face, reduce our dependence on imported fuel, and assist in making our environment cleaner for future generations.” Rikesh added that for both AEIT and smartGEN to be named as finalists in the MTA Queensland Innovation award was a great surprise but incredibly pleasing. “We are definitely proud to be recognised in this way, and proud to know that industry is observing and is supporting us to break through the glass ceiling we have in terms of support for innovative technologies and innovative companies.” September 2019 Motor Trader | 79

This will, Rebecca said, concentrate on providing dealers with the policy frameworks, skills and expertise they require to shift the balance. Diversity, she believes, is vital. “Absolutely diversity is important. Not just in the motor industry but business in general. Balance is always better and we need to reflect the communities that we serve. Our industry struggles to attract the right talent. By encouraging women into our industry, irrespective of the discipline, we are broadening our talent pool and meeting the desires of our customer base.” Other initiatives at the Frizelle group have seen the establishment of an industryleading Business Development Centre and an in-house media-buying arm, both indicative of an industry leader determined to grow her business’s stellar performance and reputation. Regarding being a finalist for the Women In Industry award, Rebecca expressed some delight at her nomination while acknowledging that such recognition should be shared with her team. “I am honoured to have members of our business nominate me but, to be honest, a little embarrassed as we all know it’s the team that drives the outcomes,” she said. “And we have an awesome team at Frizelle Sunshine.”

FRIZELLE IS ONE of the best known and well-respected names in the automotive industry. That reputation found its start in 1985 when James Frizelle bought a Mazda dealership on the Gold Coast and established the James Frizelle Automotive Group. That business would grow to become one of the largest dealership groups in Queensland and today, after joining forces with the Peter Warren Group of Sydney in 2017, is the largest privately owned dealership group in Australia. Rebecca Frizelle is a key member of the business. She is a shareholder at Frizelle Sunshine Automotive, chief operating officer of Frizelle Prestige and has been an influential voice in the industry for much of her nearly 30 years in the industry. Her career began in 1990 when she joined James Frizelle Automotive. However, at the time a career in the automotive industry was not what she had planned. “Life really is about sliding doors,” she said. “I was only 19 when I started in the industry and applied for the position as receptionist. It was my intention to study law and this was the perfect job to support me during this time. “But anyone involved in the motor industry would understand that this business quickly gets under your skin. It is dynamic, diverse, constantly changing and always challenging. The people we meet, the people we work with and the constant evolution of this business keep me focused and engaged.” Rebecca has proven to be a powerful voice on many issues, including encouraging women to consider automotive as a career choice. In 2014, the Frizelle Group stood before the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal and was handed a ruling enabling the company to advertise women-only positions on the sales floor. Y 2030, IT is reckoned that 50 per cent of all cars sold will be Hybrid or all-electric (HEV or EV). I would argue that this needs to be achieved to help fight global warming and pollution. As our Australian cities get bigger more pollution follows, and as they get to be as large as other main cities of the world such as London and New York, massive amounts of pollution comes along for the ride. According to the U.S. government’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), motor vehicles cause 75 per cent of carbon monoxide pollution in the United States. The Environmental Defence Fund (EDF), a non-profit group, have calculated that 27 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions and 33 per cent of the air pollution that produces smog in the U.S. is caused by on-road vehicles.

The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) states: “On-road nitrogen oxides emission levels of modern diesel cars are on average about seven times higher than the limit set by the Euro 6 emission standards.” The principle pollutants are: • Sulphur Dioxide • Nitrogen Oxides • Particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5, PM1) • Carbon Monoxide

DEALING WITH DIGITAL: MTAQ HOLDS SOCIAL MEDIA WORKSHOP

S

OCIAL MEDIA HAS become an indispensable part of our lives. Be it Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, Skype - the list goes on - it has fundamentally changed the way we interact with each other, how we shop, how we are entertained . . . basically it now plays a role in almost everything we do. With more than 17 million Australians actively using these social media platforms, their importance to business success is now irrefutable. If you don’t have a presence on Facebook, then you are hamstringing your business and missing out on communicating with current and potential customers. As part of MTA Queensland’s mission to help automotive industry businesses adapt and thrive in a world where digital disruption is now the norm, the Association recently held a Social Media for Automotive Business event, offering insights and advice on how to take advantage of these online platforms. Delivered by Lysa Dugandzic, marketing and communications manager for MTA Queensland, the presentation covered all the major social media applications while focusing on Facebook – the world’s most dominant platform. Attendees were introduced not only to the basics of how to use these platforms but were given solid tips and tricks – on matters from advertising and post creation strategies, to image choice and comment moderation advice – to make their business presence a success. Also discussed were new trends now playing a major role in social media,. Chief amongst these is the development

of new algorithms that make Facebook rank ‘meaningful interactions’, and the shift to make conversations an important form of engagement. This means that a straightforward business post just won’t perform as it might have a few years ago. Now, interactions with customers and other users is vital. “Chat strategies are important to incorporate into social media campaigns and encouraging direct messaging via Facebook Messenger is integral to this,” said Lysa. “Facebook also announced in 2019 a significant emphasis on Communities and Groups, pushing conversations into more private

environments. This needs to be a priority for automotive businesses too.” Video has also become a crucial part of the social media environment. Smart use of short, original video content can grab the attention and interest of consumers and such content is effective and can, added Lysa, be easily and costeffectively created. For those attending the workshop there was plenty to learn, even for those who are well-seasoned social media users. Grant Malseed, owner of performance workshop Superformance in Brisbane, already has a healthy online following for his business with nearly 5000 Facebook followers. However, there were elements from the workshop that he was enthusiastic about incorporating into Superformance’s proven social media output. “This has been very beneficial. I have made some good detailed notes and have some good things to take away,” he said. “I was particularly curious about Instagram as I didn’t fully understand how it works, but this has given me a good insight into it now and I got a lot out of it. It was a good session. “I think that like all training, even if you pull just one thing out of your participation, then it’s worth it.” Indeed it is, and learning to be digital savvy is crucial for the health of today’s automotive businesses.

“Research demonstrates that when small businesses are digitally engaged, they are 50 per cent more likely to be growing revenue, eight times more likely to be creating jobs and 14 times more likely to be innovating new products or services,” said Lysa. “Businesses that are actively producing content on their social media platforms, as part of the mix of their online presence, are more likely to be growing.” For MTA Queensland, workshops such as the Social Media for Automotive Business represents a part of the Association’s mission to assist businesses to adapt to and be successful in a constantly changing business landscape. That long-standing mission has seen MTA Queensland selected as an Industry Association for the federal government’s Small Business Digital Champions Project and the social media workshop has been developed to assist businesses in working with the best social media platforms for them, and to give ideas on how to use them successfully.

QLD GOVERNMENT OFFERING ACCESS TO FREE APPRENTICESHIPS

T

HE QUEENSLAND GOVERNMENT is offering free apprenticeships to anyone under 21. The government says the $32 million investment will take away the cost of training from employers and help an estimated 60,000 young people into a trade. “This government is about jobs,” said Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk. “Jobs in our regions, jobs in our cities, jobs in existing industries and jobs in the industries of the future. “No government has helped to create more jobs than this government and we need to keep up the good work.” The Premier unveiled the apprenticeships initiative at the August launch of the new Skills for Queensland plan, Great Training for Quality Jobs. The fully subsidised training will be offered in 139 apprentice and traineeships in industries showing a high demand for workers. MTA QUEENSLAND BACKS REFORM TO AUTOMOTIVE FRANCHISING

T

HE MORRISON GOVERNMENT has announced that it intends to implement a range of reforms to automotive franchising arrangements. In a joint media release with Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash, Minister Karen Andrews said the reforms will facilitate more transparent and cooperative operations for new car retailing. The proposed changes will provide a balance between vehicle manufacturers and the dealer networks via a separate Automotive Code of Conduct, or similar protections for the retailers, enshrined in a schedule to the existing Franchising Code. The release indicates a range of reforms to automotive franchising to be considered which is very positive, after significant public consultation outlining strong concerns from new car dealers about the need for a level playing field for all operators, from large dealerships to small family businesses. “The Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA) issued a media release yesterday, which welcomes the commitment, and outlines their

LOBAL MARKETS RALLIED again in July (MSCI ACWI +0.80%), led by the ASX200 which surpassed pre-GFC highs towards the end of the period. The trade talks between the US and China resulted in President Trump enacting a further 10% tariff on US$300bn of Chinese goods, citing disappointment in the progress of the deal. However, western markets pushed higher on the back of dovish moves by central banks. UK markets (FTSE 100 +2.2%) were higher partially due to the election of Boris Johnson as Prime Minister, who delivered a form of Brexit certainty. Europe did not reflect the same level of optimism (MSCI Europe ex-UK +0.1%) while US markets (S&P 500 +5.8%, NASDAQ +6.6%) outperformed their Asian counterparts (Hang Seng -2.8%, Nikkei -4.6%, KOPSI -11.8%). Domestically, The S&P/ASX 200 Accumulation Index was up 2.94% in July. Consumer Staples (9.8%) was the biggest outperformer, as a number of stock specific stories such as A2 Milk and Treasury Wines prompted the market to become less bearish on the sector. Healthcare (5.9%) also outperformed as ResMed reported strongly and CSL pushed higher. DOMESTICALLY, THE S&P/ ASX 200 ACCUMULATION INDEX WAS UP 2.94% IN JULY. CONSUMER STAPLES (9.8%) WAS THE BIGGEST OUTPERFORMER . . . . subdued in the wake of ongoing trade frictions and political unrest. Financials (1.7%) also lagged as lower interest rates restrict margin expansion and credit growth prospects remain slim.
