Message from the Artistic Director
Ransome Foster and Martin don’t belong. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is set in Twotrees, a frontier town without civilization or culture where the only trace of beauty is a cactus flower. When Ransome is carried half dead into the local bar, he enters a place where none of his skills or experience will help him survive. In his bag, he carries a treasure that seems wasted on Twotrees: books about law and literature. Yet, because we have entered a mythical world, this unlikely knight and these ill-fitted treasures will first imperil, and then save the townspeople. Steven Schipper
By contrast, Martin in Seminar trespasses into a world of civilization and culture without having the
money to survive there. The $5,000 he’s paid for the writing master class will buy him into the orbit of a literary luminary (and into the moneyed Upper West Side where the class takes place), but it was all he had – and now talent alone won’t pay his rent. So he rides as unarmed as Ransome into a world of scorn, lust and cynicism with only his ideals and his talent as armour. We have all felt like Ransome and Martin, out of place and ill-equipped to meet the challenges we face. That’s why theatre matters: we ride vicariously with these improbable heroes into battle, where we learn to vanquish fear and uncertainty. The weapons wielded by these two men are as old as chivalry itself – courage, wisdom and purity of heart – and, as each play ends, the actors seem to toss them to us from the stage with that age-old challenge: “Go and do thou likewise.” Yours always,

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
The Stage World of The Wild West When I began pursuing the idea of putting The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance onstage I thought only about London and British audiences. That North American audiences will be watching a Western play written by an English writer makes me feel like I’ve cheated – I’ve never been to the Wild West. Other than a few days in Missouri, I’ve never been to America. In person that is; for in stories, films, television and music, I’ve spent nearly every waking moment of the last four years living right at the heart of the Great American West. Before I discovered the story of Liberty Valance I knew I wanted to create a Western for stage and no matter how hard I looked, I couldn’t find anything of the sort, other than the big musicals like Calamity Jane or Oklahoma!. I wanted to create the world I’d come to love on the screen, a gritty, painful existence in which people fought against poverty, against the elements, and against each other. What makes this period so exciting is that this struggle sits against the constant backdrop of hope.

BY JETHRO COMPTON
Hope, desire and aspirations are universal elements that connect an audience to a story’s characters. Despite these characters existing over a century ago, we understand them; we understand the hope that fuels them, their desire for something more, their ambition for something greater. As a result, though the men and women of this play talk in Southern drawl, swig whiskey from the bottle and sling six shooters from the hip, this story isn’t about life in the Wild West, but simply about life, about love and, most importantly, about sacrifice. The first act was written while I was working in South Australia; the dry heat and relentless sun mixed with the foreign landscape became the perfect setting. As I was writing for myself there was no delivery date, so the script came together across the space of around six months – some pages scribbled in London, others at home in Cornwall. During this time I continued to watch as many Westerns as I
RECOGNIZE THAT VOICE? The narrator behind The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is none other than Academy Award nominee and Emmy-winnipeg actor Robert Vaughn, one of the godfathers of Western films. Vaughn has starred in some of the greatest classics of the 20th Century, including The Young Philadelphians, The Magnificent Seven, The Towering Inferno and Bullit. His other notable TV credits include The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Protectors and The A-Team.

(And How It’s Ready to Ride Again) could, which is probably the most enjoyable research period I’ve ever undertaken. I didn’t worry about historical accuracy, I worried only about the story I wanted to tell, and whether the estate of Dorothy M. Johnson would permit my inventions and forgive my omissions. Writing a play based on another’s writing is nerve-wracking; it offers the world of the story and the key structure of events, but you must try to simultaneously create your own story and honour the voice of the original. I hope Liberty captures the essence of Dorothy’s writing, whilst allowing my voice and my love of the genre to be heard. By the time we came to staging the play’s premiere in London, the script had sat on my shelf for the best part of a year. Reading it again one afternoon I found myself looking on it with fresh eyes and all the excitement of the first time I heard the story. This excitement lasted throughout the months of pre-production, through opening night, right the way to the closing performance and was shared by every member of the team that made it. As a theatre producer I’m always searching for a project that will generate the same sense of joy and wonder in the cast, creative team, production staff and audience alike. When you find one, as we did in Liberty, it becomes a labour of love, something that we were all willing to throw ourselves behind. The chance for the cast to play cowboys, gunslingers, sheriffs and outlaws was pretty much a dream come

true – it’s not something we get a chance to do much after childhood fancy dress parties. In Liberty we were able to create a world, to tell a story in that world, and to bring our audience with us. There is almost a nostalgia to the Western genre; despite the fact there are countless Westerns made by Hollywood each year, people think of Westerns and recall childhood Sunday afternoons sat with their father, or grandfather, watching the old classics on the television. When I told people I was doing a Western, so many eyes lit up with fond memories – The Magnificent Seven, High Noon, Shane, and to younger audiences, Deadwood, Django Unchained, and for the computer game fans, the masterpiece, Red Dead Redemption. But for every set of eyes that lit up, there were those who scowled in disbelief. How can it possibly work? One critic worried, ‘Would we see the actors riding invisible horses?’ Throughout the process I always said that no one had done it before (certainly not in London), and perhaps there was a good reason why. But looking back a year on from the show’s premiere, I’m overjoyed that we took the gamble, because looking ahead to the show’s future, I’m delighted to say that the stageWestern is very much alive, and Liberty is about to ride again. GUNPLAY
Shooting the breeze with firearms safety specialist and consultant dave brown From Robin Williams and Sir Ben Kingsley to Samuel L. Jackson, Dave Brown has worked with some of Hollywood’s biggest names to make action sequences look great on the big (and small) screens – and ensure they’re being done safely. As one of the industry’s most sought-after experts, Dave is working behind the scenes on The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance to help bring the gunslingers from the Wild West to the John Hirsch Mainstage. Tell us about your background. How did your career develop into firearms consulting in the entertainment industry?
I’ve been doing this kind of work in film and theatre for more than 20 years, and it’s probably one of the more unusual jobs in the business. I’ve been a professional firearms trainer for a long time, working with the government and the RCMP. A number of years ago a production company was shooting a film in Winnipeg that involved the FBI, and they wanted someone to really make them look like actual agents. So they asked me to be there every day (to supervise) and I found it to be a lot of fun and I really enjoyed it, and it all kind of started from there. You’ve done extensive work on film and television sets. What’s different about creating these kinds of effects for a theatre performance?
When you work in film, it’s rare a gun is ever fired towards the actor for safety 8
reasons. In most cases, you film the gun as a close up and then you film the actor being shot and then edit them together. In theatre, we don’t have that luxury because it’s all happening live on stage. It’s trickier, and takes a bit more work. It’s all a matter of angles, distances and the actual load that you’re firing. All of it has to be very, very specific and carefully choreographed to make sure it’s all being done safely. Gun fights, duels and shootouts always seem to be a big part of the Western genre. What can you tell us about weapons and gunslingers from that era?
The gunfights during that time period weren’t really as legendary as we think they were. The guns they used would have been single-action revolvers, which only held six bullets. But it didn’t really matter anyway, because they had very rudimentary sights; people never used two hands, it was always one-handed and shooting from the hip so the chances of shooting anybody farther

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance than about five or six feet was almost non-existent. It was pure luck more than anything else. In real life, gunfights were just a couple of drunks who would get mad at each other or fight over cards, spill out on the street for a couple of shots and that would be it.

Authenticity is something that’s very important to you. What little “mistakes” do you often notice when you’re watching films or TV shows that an average viewer might not notice?
To help repay their hospitality, Ransome
There’s so many little details that a trained professional can look at: the way they hold it, where their other hand is, where the holsters and spare ammunition are. Running around and having your finger on the trigger is one of the biggest giveaways. Another thing is that the guns they use in the entertainment industry fire blanks, and blanks don’t create any recoil. So an actor who has never fired a real gun before in their life thinks they have to add that, and it ends up looking completely fake. No one in the world can pull that off, except maybe Clint Eastwood with his 44 Magnum. He’s the only one. Based in Winnipeg, Dave Brown is a wellknown firearms training specialist and coach. He has worked with hundreds of actors on film and theatre sets and now travels across the country to teach workshops on firearms safety in film and television production.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is based on a short story by American author Dorothy M. Johnson, who was best known for her Western fiction. The story was most famously adapted into the 1962 film of the same name starring James Stewart and John Wayne, and is often hailed as one of the great Western classics. In 2007, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

Is Alice Through the Looking-Glass for kids or for adults? The answer is an enthusiastic yes. Like the book, this enchanting production promises to delight audiences of all ages. If you’d like to enhance your experience, you can always heed the advice of Toronto Star critic Richard Ouzounian who said, “If you don’t know a child, rent one for the afternoon and go see this show.” Alice Through the Looking-Glass was originally commissioned by the Stratford Festival with Sarah Polley in the lead role. We’re delighted that our show features the dazzling set and costumes from their most recent production, although our version will showcase an almost entirely local cast. When Alice appears onstage, she may even look or sound familiar to you. That’s because Gwendolyn Collins is an actor who also works in the Royal MTC Box Office! This production was originally produced at the Stratford Festival in association with Canada’s National Arts Centre in 2014.
GROUPS ALWAYS SAVE! Alice Through the Looking-Glass makes a perfect excursion for family (kids 8+), friends and co-workers. If you’d like to bring a group of 10 or more, contact Thomas Urish at 204 954 6413 or turish@royalmtc.ca for info and special rates.

foster: Think of everything you could do in the city – the theater, the ballet, opera, art and museums. hallie: What would I get from any of that? foster: Happiness. – the man who shot liberty valance In our sharp-shooting opener at the Mainstage, Ransome Foster travels from New York to the town of Twotrees in the Wild West. He attempts to impress Hallie Jackson, no-nonsense owner of the Prairie Belle Saloon, by praising the cultural offerings in the East. The world Ransome describes is foreign to Hallie since Twotrees is clearly no Winnipeg with its wealth of theatre, ballet, opera, art, museums and more. Sadly, the townsfolk of Twotrees are missing out because these enriching experiences do inspire happiness! You can also inspire happiness by: Joining new and returning audience members, subscribers, donors, corporate sponsors, volunteers and friends at Royal MTC. Welcome! The Fund is valued at more than $18 million and, in 2014/15, contributed $602,066 to the production of professional theatre for all Manitobans to enjoy. Your donation to the Endowment Fund has great impact because every dollar contributed before November 30, 2015 will be matched through the Canada Cultural Investment Fund. Director’s Notes BY STEWART ARNOTT in a particular way, and has their ‘story’ down pat. Each of them has that story challenged by another – even Leonard is forced to self-examine – and we eagerly watch them metamorphose, in big ways and small, over the course of the play.
The Truth. It’s such a slippery thing, isn’t it? There is the truth as we see it, there’s someone else’s version and there are, apparently, Universal Truths. ‘The Truth Hurts’ could be the subtitle to Theresa Rebeck’s wicked, beautifully crafted comedy. Leonard, the infamous ex-author and now sought-after editor and teacher, believes that telling his students the hard truth is where it’s at. He sees it as his mission to make them see just how bloody difficult it is to be a really good writer. However, the four 20-something wannabes who’ve hired him to teach them how to succeed in the book biz don’t necessarily want to hear that from him. Kate, Martin, Douglas and Izzy all want him to say that he sees their talent and values what they’ve written. They want praise. Who wouldn’t? So, when Leonard proceeds to assess their personas as well as their writing skills – his version of “telling the truth” (and as only he can, with cruel bluntness and deadly wit) – they start seriously questioning what the hell they are doing in both the seminar, and in their chosen profession. Even when he praises their efforts, there is often another complex agenda at play. We all carry around the story of who we are – our own personal narrative. It’s often not all that accurate. I’m not saying we’re all delusional and think we are perfect when we’re anything but. In fact, our personal narratives can be as misguidedly critical as they are flattering. Each of the five characters in Seminar clearly sees themselves 22
A key aspect of truth that also fascinates Theresa Rebeck is how the stories we tell the world are almost always shaded with some degree of untruth. The characters quite frequently tell each other little and not-solittle lies, stretching and reshaping the truth to suit their own purposes. The moral impact of the lies that writers perpetrate in their work is explosively examined as well, with false memoirs and plagiarism being two juicy topics that rise up in the action and create all sorts of excitement. Now, all these potentially serious themes are wrapped up in dark, delightful comedy. Ms. Rebeck skillfully mines these volatile goings-on for all their inherent humour. This may be life and death, and there is certainly metaphorical bloodshed, but we cannot help but gasp with laughter at the shenanigans. At the same time, she makes very sure that we grow to care about these people, who are all capable of acts of kindness when push comes to shove. And so Seminar rocks along, fuelled by the heady mixture of violence (emotional and intellectual), sex (real) and even love. It’s simply really good theatre – and that’s The Truth!

Seminar Synopsis
Four young, 20-something writers – Martin, Douglas, Kate and Izzy – pool their money to hire famous novelist Leonard for a 10-week master class to be held in Kate’s Upper West Side apartment. Hard-drinking and oversexed, Leonard has seen his once-prolific career wane, and he now makes ends meet with freelance jobs and pricey seminars. Undeniably charismatic and indisputably harsh, Leonard throws the book at his students with his recklessly brilliant and unorthodox instruction. His workshops become punctuated by professional envy, personal jealousy and sexual tension, leaving some students to thrive and others to flounder in Theresa Rebeck’s smart and sexy comedy. Background
Seminar originally opened on Broadway in November 2011 at the John Golden Theater, with Alan Rickman playing the role of Leonard. Jeff Goldbum later replaced Rickman as Leonard, and Justin Long joined the cast in the role of Martin. The play’s Broadway run earned a nomination by the Outer Critics Circle and the Drama League for Best Play.

Royal MTC/MBA Lawyers Play
T-H-A-N-K y-o-u
From May 5 to 9, the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre transformed the Tom Hendry Warehouse stage into a school auditorium to transport Winnipeggers to The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. The cast, comprised entirely of members of the Manitoba Bar Association (MBA), put in hundreds of volunteer hours to prepare for the production. Their hard work and dedication paid off, as the musical left more than 1,000 attendees laughing out loud and cheering for their favourite characters to take first prize and win the bee. The annual Royal MTC/MBA Lawyers Play is an important fundraising event for the theatre and for the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival, having raised more than $940,000 since 1990. The support of our patrons, donors, program advertisers and sponsors allows us to offer extraordinary theatre at accessible prices to all Manitobans. Royal MTC extends sincere thanks to the talented cast and hardworking crew, as well as our many volunteers, sponsors, advertisers and audience members. Next onstage at the Warehouse is the riveting true story about Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal. As portrayed by Tom Dugan, Wiesenthal is warm, funny and wise. But his grandfatherly demeanour masks a steely determination that fuelled his relentless pursuit of justice. The numbers behind his story are staggering: Simon and his wife lost a total of 89 relatives in the Holocaust. After surviving the war, he dedicated 58 years to tracking war criminals, bringing 1,100 to justice. Don’t miss the award-winning play that finds universal resonance in one man’s personal journey.
SIMON WIESENTHAL IN HIS OWN WORDS
The combination of hatred and technology is the greatest danger threatening mankind. For evil to flourish, it only requires good men to do nothing. Even before I had had time to really think things through, I realized we must not forget. If all of us forgot, the same thing might happen again, in 20 or 50 or 100 years. My cause was justice, not vengeance. My work is for a better tomorrow and a more secure future for our children and grandchildren. Tolerance and human rights require each other. Survival is a privilege which entails obligations. I am forever asking myself what I can do for those who have not survived.
