Message from the Artistic Director
I know first-hand that the boom was a verb as well as a noun. Our parents were the silent generation, and so we baby boomers were loud. They were passive, obedient, held back by poverty and war. We were rebellious, adventurous, emboldened by prosperity and, for a time at least, by peace. Our music was also louder: their singers crooned, ours screamed. We even figured out how to electrify our instruments so our music could boom from giant speakers. We used that volume to glorify the individual (“Do your own thing, man!”), though it turns out we were Steven Schipper
all doing the same thing. Or so the demographers tell us. Rick Miller understands that the central conflict of
the boomer generation was the tug-of-war between the individual and society. His BOOM has captivated audiences precisely because he explores the cultural phenomenon while dissecting the personal experience of three real boomers. Casablanca, perhaps the crowning cinematic expression of the silent generation, whispered that “the problems of three little people don’t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world,” while Rick Miller, in documenting his family’s boomer roots, proclaims that the problems of three little people are the crazy world, in miniature. He also reminds us that, although the boomers’ needs were a massive glacier reshaping the contemporary cultural landscape of North America, we also sacrificed our own self-interest for ideals as old as time: freedom, equality, and the sanctity of nature. Rick Miller forgives us our generation’s excesses and celebrates our triumphs, and wraps up our season with that most primal of theatrical forms: one talented storyteller embodying a multitude of characters. He reminds us why we come back to the theatre year after year: the illuminating power of narrative, the immediacy of live performance, and the power we wield when we gather together with our neighbours to re-imagine the world, and our place in it. Yours always,

Q&A WITH RICK MILLER WRITER, DIRECTOR & STAR OF
Q A
Where did the idea for BOOM come from?
It takes me a long time from initial idea to actually beginning to create a show. I mull over all the ideas in my head, and over time, one often pulls me in a specific direction. Often, there’s a personal catalyst, and in the case of BOOM, it was my father. Like me, he’s an archivist, endlessly cataloguing and documenting his family’s history. He was starting to document his own story growing up in Vienna during and after the Second World War, and I found the excerpts he was emailing me fascinating – so different from the usual North American post-war experience. I began to dig into the history, politics and culture of the baby boom period, and hooked into the concept of a solo documentary ‘time capsule’; I literally become my parents, as well as dozens of other influential figures who shaped their lives. What in particular about that era interested you?
I’ve always been a child of rock ‘n’ roll, so to document its birth was a great challenge for me. So music and pop culture are one part of it. But the most interesting 8
discovery to me was that in the 1960s, more than any time before or since, culture and politics actually seemed to merge. A massive generation of young people, connecting around big issues, and causing an explosion of creativity and consequence that still affects all of us who are not boomers. Like you, right?
Right. I’m not a boomer, although I was born out of another mini-baby boom that followed the moon landing of Apollo 11. That happened in July 1969, and I was born in March of 1970. You do the math. So in a way, the story of boomers is the story of my parents. And why should we care about our parents’ stories? Or our grandparents’ stories? Because I think we can learn about ourselves today if we just look back and see the cycles and patterns of history. BOOM is full of circles and spiraling elements in order to reinforce just that: history repeats itself, and we become more like our parents than we wish to think. Is your ideal audience a family, then?
Not in the sense of a ‘family show’, which tends to imply that you can bring your

different back then – full of coffeehouses, draft dodgers and counter-culture freaks. And since then, we’ve gone from hair central to Holt Renfrew and from hippie to yuppie, but that’s a whole other story. For audience members who aren’t baby boomers, can you give a quick primer?

toddlers. My partners and I at Kidoons are developing historical literacy materials for all ages (see heritagemoment.com), and BOOM itself is more appropriate for ages 12 and up. But if we can get three generations to come to the theatre and experience the show together, I think it could open up all sorts of interesting conversations around the dinner table. In our work-in-progress run at Theatre Calgary in January 2014, there was an 18-year-old boy who stayed around for the post-show talkback, which I do after every show. He raised his hand and said that he wished he had seen this show with his grandmother, who had just died a few weeks prior. The idea was that he would have understood her a little better, having just had a glimpse into her life through BOOM. Is there a Canadian connection to the show?
Very much so. BOOM is structured like a documentary, where three baby boomer characters look back and tell stories about their childhood from 1945–1969. They’re born in three different countries, but their lives start to intersect at the University of Toronto and in Yorkville. I found it fascinating that Yorkville was so radically april/may 2016
Sure. ‘Boomers’ refers to children born during the ‘baby boom’ that followed the end of the Second World War. There were so many of them born in such a short time, that they were able (and still are able) to remodel society as they pass through it. They call it the “pig in the python” effect. As they grow older, all the big stories of the time – the Cold War, the Space Race, Vietnam, the Civil Rights Movement, the birth of rock ‘n’ roll – start spiraling together in this fusion of politics and culture. A massive generation of young people, fuelled by breakthroughs in technology and communications, connecting around big issues in a very turbulent time. Why did you decide to do this as a solo show?
BOOM is the latest in a long line of solo shows that I’ve created (or co-created) in my 20-year career. As much as I enjoy working with larger ensembles, there is a certain satisfaction in taking people on a ride with just myself onstage. Of course, any theatre production is collaborative, and even a solo show has a whole team working to make the project soar. But for this piece, I felt that part of the audience experience is to be immersed in one man’s journey to rediscover his past, and fold it into the future. Playing 100 characters in 100 minutes is a challenge, to be sure (vocals range from Perry Como to Janis Joplin!), but one that makes the experience all the more rewarding for myself and for the audience. I hope you walk out of BOOM as exhausted and exhilarated as I do!

BOOM
WRITER’S NOTES “That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons of history.” – Aldous Huxley (1959)
I’m a storyteller, not a historian. Historical facts only interest me inasmuch as they help tell a story, for stories are how we learn from our mistakes – and from each other. BOOM is a collage of stories that I’ve been documenting about the generation that immediately preceded me: stories of the famous and the not-so-famous; stories of the living and the no-longer-living. Each story in itself might be worthy of a full play, but in this case I’ve chosen to paint them into a larger picture. My hope is that by spiraling through 25 tumultuous years (1945 to 1969), we can all gain perspective not only on who we were, but who we are now and where we’re going. Think of BOOM as a living, breathing time capsule. It starts with a ‘boom’, it ends with a ‘boom’. I hope it stirs up your own stories, so that we can share them together after the show. Explosively yours, Rick Miller

who are the baby boomers? The Second World War, and the Great Depression that preceded it, meant that an entire generation had delayed marriage and raising children. The Depression, which began in 1929, led to unemployment rates as high as 25 per cent nationally and widespread poverty and economic uncertainty. Although the economy improved during the war thanks to massive government spending on military goods, few consumer products were available to the public. Marriages were either put on hold or forced to endure separations lasting several years and when the war ended, many people were eager to have children and raise families. This unexpected period of postwar prosperity resulted in a “Baby Boom” in which North Americans had children at a very high rate in a relatively small april/may 2016
amount of time. Between 1946 and 1961, 6.7 million children were born in Canada, whose population was only 11 million at the beginning of the boom. The birthrate during this time was 28 per 1,000 compared to around 11 per 1,000 today. This “Baby Boom” generation changed Canada. New schools had to be built to accommodate them. Marketers sought to sell their products to this lucrative market with more disposable income than any generation in Canadian history. This generation also came of age in the 1960s and was behind the tidal wave of youth protest that focused on civil rights, anti-war and feminist movements. Audiences across Manitoba and northwestern Ontario were enthralled with Steven Canny and John Nicholson’s adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles, Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre’s 2016 Regional Tour. This screwball retelling of a literary classic had audiences rolling in the aisles from Virden to Atikokan and from Crystal City to Thompson. The company travelled over 7,500 km to bring our play to 4,234 theatre lovers in 23 communities. As it was a revival of a Prairie Theatre Exchange production, director Ann Hodges retooled it for the road. Actors Toby Hughes, Arne MacPherson and Aaron Pridham were met with the warmest of welcomes on cold winter nights. Stage manager Kathryn Ball and apprentice stage manager Brett Mikulik worked closely with technical director Ian Kirk and technician Chris Hadley to ensure the complex set worked in the myriad venues on the road. Three actors play 17 characters in this story of an ancient family curse that picks off members of the Baskerville line if they dare cross the desolate moor after dark. Sir Henry Baskerville, intent on claiming his inheritance, enlists Sherlock Holmes and John Watson to get to the bottom of the mystery. “Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries is extremely proud of its partnership with the Royal MTC Regional Tour. We have been along for the ride as presenting sponsor for 12 consecutive seasons and we continue to be thoroughly impressed by the dedication and talent of the cast and crew,” said CEO John Stinson. “Every performance exposes new audiences to the joys of professional theatre. We thank everyone involved.” This tour would not be possible without the assistance of our sponsors: Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, Manitoba Public Insurance, CIBC and MacDon. We would also like to thank the Manitoba Arts Council and all our presenters and volunteers.

If you’ve never been to the festival, you may believe Fringe shows are experimental, edgy or “out there.” While it’s true that the Fringe provides artists with total creative freedom to develop and present their plays – which results in some unique work – the majority of shows are simply new plays presented in innovative ways. The Fringe acts as a platform for artists from Manitoba, Canada and around the world to take their artistry to the next level and showcase their work to wider audiences. Winnipeggers enthusiastically embraced this unique festival experience from our very first event in 1988 and have
helped it to grow into the second-largest Fringe in North America. Royal MTC is the only regional theatre in Canada to include a Fringe Festival as part of its annual programming. Rick Miller’s phenomenal success with his Fringe hit MacHomer helped turn him into one of the busiest guys in theatre – he has performed his award-winning show on four continents to more than half a million theatregoers. So if you’ve never been to the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival, we hope you come out this summer to enjoy some of the 175 productions presented by artists from Winnipeg, across Canada and as far away as Australia, Germany, Israel, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. No matter your theatrical tastes – comedy, dance, musical theatre, drama, improv or something a bit more unique – you’ll find it at the Fringe. With ticket prices at an affordable $10, the Fringe is accessible for all Fringe fans. There’s a reason why thousands of theatre lovers flock to the Exchange District every July. Come see what all the fuss is about!

ACT LIKE A STAR! Everyone at the theatre is part of the show. Yes, even you. You want to be a star, don’t you? These tips will make you a stand-out performer (in a good way)!
Scents and Sensibility
Many theatre lovers experience adverse medical reactions from scented products. Please consider others before using scented products.
Park Your Mobile Device
We know something interesting is happening on social media. It always is. But your neighbours want to watch the play. Please turn off all mobile devices.
The Sound of Silence
Our theatre has great acoustics. So when you’re talking during the show, everyone can hear you. Your neighbours, the ushers and even the actors. We want you to talk about the show… at intermission or after the final bows.
We’re always happy to see you at the theatre. Thank you for coming!
New Creations
Wordplay For 18 years, Investors Group has generously supported our Wordplay program. Their visionary leadership has been a critical factor in our development of new plays. Since Steven Schipper took the helm, he has premiered an average of one new play each season, an exciting accomplishment for the company, for the artists who created the work, and for the corporation that funds this artistic exploration. Wordplay is Royal MTC’s vitally important “R&D” wing, where we can foster new work, invest in the creation and development of plays for our stages and for the Canadian theatre canon. We commission new plays, provide dramaturgical support, program readings and workshops, and review and analyze script submissions.
the form of final drafts, the theatre also invests in the creation of new plays. This season, we’ve had seven projects in development, instead of our usual three. Artistic Director Steven Schipper attributes the increased activity to great playwrights with unique ideas: “Each writer has introduced us to exceptional characters who tackle big challenges, often while navigating a seismic social shift. Each project was irresistible and, thanks to Investors Group, we’re able to support all these playwrights on their creative journeys.” WORDPLAY SPONSORED BY
Plays like Unnecessary Farce make it to our stage via one of the theatre’s freelance script analysts, another aspect of the Wordplay program sponsored by Investors Group. Artistic staff search endlessly for great plays, and they need help to read the hundreds of resulting submissions each year. The playwrights and dramaturgs who work for us as script analysts often read the scripts first, then provide a synopsis and analysis to staff, along with recommendations about which stage, if any, might be a good fit. One of our analysts recommended Paul Slade Smith’s escapist romp, and we were charmed by the way it refreshed the classic bedroom farce by adding a high-stakes police investigation. While plays read by analysts usually take 22

Theatre for Young Audiences
ENRICHING STUDENTS’ LIVES THROUGH THE POWER OF LIVE THEATRE A trip to the theatre does more that encourage an appreciation of the arts; it feeds our minds and our hearts. When young people experience theatre, their emotions are stirred so they learn to empathize with others. They become attuned to the subtleties of spoken language, so they can choose their words with care. They learn about history and geography from plays set in other places and eras, so they become part of a community that transcends space, time, and culture. In effect, a student visiting the theatre steps through a doorway to civilization, in all its wonder and diversity. Each season, Royal MTC offers student-only performances for Grades 7–12 for just $14 per student. Join us next season for:

Your donations create change
The cast of Billy Elliot The Musical. PHOTO BY ROBERT TINKER
Like all good directors, Steven Schipper has an eye for detail. Every line spoken, gesture made or movement initiated by an actor is purposeful and meaningful. And certainly no word is overlooked when reading and re-reading a script. Shows like Billy Elliot The Musical and Unnecessary Farce are wonderful examples of how this painstaking commitment to taking a play from page to stage can be the difference between success and failure. The job of a director can be rewarding but it also comes at a price. There is pressure, uncertainty and, often, self-doubt. So why in the world would anyone willingly choose this career path? Because, as Steven often shares with others, “We believe plays are the most effective way we know to create a more loving, peaceful world. Steven is passionate about the broader social impact of live theatre and he knows the small steps in the process become the building blocks of a larger story unfolding in our community. If we connect to a play and share its story with even one person, we slowly create change. Thanks to the support of donors, we continue to share stories that are beautiful, moving and funny. Your donations allow us to create positive change within Winnipeg and throughout communities in Manitoba and northwestern Ontario. 26
This season might be coming to a close but, if you choose to donate for the first time or contribute an additional gift before May 31, your donation will be matched by an anonymous donor, up to a total of $5,000. Yes, your gift will have even greater impact this month! Your donation of any amount makes a difference. Beyond providing quality live theatre for subscribers and ticket buyers, your donation engages future theatre lovers through Theatre for Young Audiences, a program offering deeply discounted student-only matinees. This year, more than 1,700 students were welcomed into the best seats at our theatres for The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Wiesenthal and Alice Through the Looking-Glass. And an additional 2,800 students enjoyed a variety of shows with their schools. Thank you for being part of another wonderful season at Royal MTC. If you smiled, laughed or shed a tear at any point, please consider making a gift prior to May 31. You will be contributing to the success of Royal MTC by helping us reach the goal of $10,000 in new dollars by the end of May. We invite you to donate by phoning Heidi in the fundraising office at 204 954 6412. Or you can contribute online at royalmtc.ca.

Final Bow The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre honours the passing of those dear to our theatre – people who’ve made a lasting contribution to this ephemeral art form.
Reg Skene was the larger-than-life teacher, critic and historian who created the University of Winnipeg’s theatre program, where so many of our great artists have trained. His booming voice, imposing stature, ready laugh and piercing intellect animated both the faculty and the students. Skene also wrote a book on the Cuchulain plays of William Butler
34
Yeats, and created a lecture series about that great Irish playwright for CTV. But our theatre will remember him best for his witty, perceptive theatre reviews in the Winnipeg Free Press, and his eminently readable doctoral thesis: Theatre and Community Development Toward a Professional Theatre in Winnipeg: 1897–1958, which ends with the birth of our theatre. In the conclusion, Skene wrote: “A tendency to obliterate history … was a source of strength in [founders John Hirsch and Tom Hendry] in the early years of MTC. … however, we have reached a point where conscious assessment of our place in the historical process may be useful.” With Skene’s passing, our access to that historical perspective dims, even as the artists he engendered brighten our future. Belinda Wonnacott served in our box office from 1986 to 1988, when she became the theatre’s receptionist. “A businessman once told me that it’s easier to replace a CEO than a receptionist, and I thought immediately of Belinda,” said Royal MTC Producer Laurie Lam. “She remembered every visitor, and knew where every staff person was at any given time. She had a wicked sense of humour, a keen intelligence, and no one ever got by her. She could be sweet as pie one minute, and ready to defend her territory the next.” She ruled the theatre’s reception desk for more than a decade, until a devastating illness made it impossible for her to continue working. That she managed to survive for another 18 years is a testament to her strength and willpower, and to the loving family network that supported her.

GORDON SHILLINGFORD AND BELINDA WONNACOTT: PROVIDED PHOTOS. REG SKENE PHOTO BY JEFF DE BOOY (2001).
Gordon Shillingford co-founded Blizzard Publishing with Peter Atwood in 1986, before branching out to head J. Gordon Shillingford Publishing in 1992. The press focuses mainly on drama and literary titles, but also publishes poetry and some non-fiction. The imprint Scirocco Drama became Canada’s second-largest publisher of plays, including four that had their world premieres at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre: Bigger Than Jesus by Rick Miller, and Maureen Hunter’s plays Atlantis, Vinci and Transit of Venus. Rory Runnells, Artistic Director of the Manitoba Association of Playwrights, describes another Shillingford initiative. “Gord decided to sponsor the MAP High School Playwriting Competition because, as he put it: ‘Maybe one day, I’ll be publishing these playwrights.’ That kind of foresight and care about the future of Manitoba playwriting is rare. His support was important then, as now, to the development of new, young playwrights.” The competition will go ahead this year under the banner of Scirocco Drama, May 26 and 27 at our Tom Hendry Warehouse Theatre.
Creating value where we live and work. Together. Applauding Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre.
