Message from the Artistic Director of Royal MTC

La Cage aux Folles is a story as old as time: star-crossed young lovers and the parents who stand in their way. Writers Jean Poiret, Jerry Herman, and Harvey Fierstein have freshened the concept by making three of the four parents men: two are gay, and the third is a homophobic politician. And so the stage is set for high-stakes secrets, moral outrage, and, of course, characters pretending to be something they are not. Life may not be worth a damn till you can say “Hey, world, I am what I am,” but a lot of the characters in La Cage aux Folles seem willing to lie about

Steven Schipper

themselves for the sake of the people they love.

The characters aren’t alone in sacrificing their true identities. For love of our theatre, the lawyers in our production, like all actors, pretend to be something they’re not. It’s taken weeks for them just to learn to walk in those shoes. Their dedication, courage and hard work inspire us all, and remind us that grace and poise transcend gender. The onstage performers are the most visible face of the Manitoba Bar Association’s ongoing and generous belief in our theatre and its value to our community. Thanks to them (and to everyone who bought tickets, donated catering or worked behind the scenes), love really can conquer all, offstage and on. Of course, as Robb Paterson often says (quoting the Beatles with an authentic Liverpudlian accent), all you need is love. During his 13-year tenure at our theatre, Robb directed seven MBA shows and assisted me on three others, including this production of La Cage aux Folles. He is a warm, wise, witty presence in any rehearsal hall, and he has a special gift for nurturing performers who haven’t made the stage their career. Robb has been a perfect fit for those talented lawyers who regularly make the leap to our stage, because they know that he will never let them fall, and that, more often than not, he can help them shine like stars. This one’s for you, Robbie, with love. Yours always,

Message from the President of the Manitoba Bar Association

La Cage aux Folles invites us to witness the farcical adventures of two very different families that begin the journey of becoming one against the backdrop of a very unusual cabaret nightclub in St. Tropez. The story is hilarious on the one hand, and also addresses issues of diversity and acceptance on the other. Brad Regehr

The production you are about to see consists of a cast made up entirely of volunteers who are law students,

articling students and lawyers. They have dedicated an immense amount of time towards providing you, the audience, with an amazing performance. Their commitment and dedication to this performance is unmatched. As a cast member of past Lawyers Play shows, I know how hard they have worked. To the cast – for those of you who haven’t danced in high heels before – please don’t take the whole “break a leg” thing literally! I would like to thank the Director of La Cage aux Folles, Steven Schipper, the choreographer Sofia Constantini, the Executive Producer Chuck McEwen, Royal MTC/MBA committee members and all the staff at Royal MTC for their continued hard work which makes this event such a success. To date, these joint productions have raised almost $970,000 for Royal MTC. I also want to thank all the corporate sponsors for their generous support of this event and their contribution to the fundraising efforts of Royal MTC. Finally, I thank each of you for attending tonight and supporting Royal MTC by doing so.

Artists Gail Asper

Kalyn Bomback

Marie Dindon

Lo Singh

Gail is delighted to be a member of the cast of La Cage aux Folles, which marks her 11th production with the Royal MTC/MBA plays. Favourite past roles include Mama Rose in Gypsy, Nurse Ratchet in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Adelaide in Guys and Dolls. When not treading the boards, Gail plays the role of President of The Asper Foundation, which spearheaded the creation of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and focuses on Jewish and Israeli causes, human rights, the arts and education. Gail would like to thank her husband Mike and sons Stephen and Jonathan for their love and support. She is very grateful to be a part of such a gorgeous show and an incredibly talented cast!

Kalyn is thrilled to be returning for her third Royal MTC/MBA production, La Cage aux Folles! Kalyn is active in Winnipeg’s theatre and film community. As a current member of Merlyn Productions Theatre Company, her recent theatre credits include: The Astonished Heart (Lead, CowardFest 2015), Ernie’s Incredible Illucinations (Stage Manager, AyckbournFest 2016) and The World of the Brothers Grimm (Stage Manager, 2015). Kalyn studies film acting at The Acting Studio Winnipeg and had a speaking role in the 2015 feature film A Dog’s Purpose. Thank you to the incredible cast and crew of La Cage!!! Special thanks to my mom and dad, my mentors and my friends – you are my rock.

Andrea Bellhouse

Krista Boryskavich

Jacqueline

This is Andrea’s third appearance in the Royal MTC/MBA production, having previously appeared in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. When she is not running the most successful restaurant in St. Tropez, Andrea can be seen in her role as an articling student at Deeley Fabbri Sellen or as a member of the board for Manitoba Underground Opera. Many thanks to the creative team for their encouragement and vision, to Justin for his love and patience, and to all of you for your support! Merci! Mille fois!

8

Mme. Renaud

Krista is pleased to be participating in her fourth Royal MTC/MBA production, having previously appeared in Cabaret, Inherit the Wind and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Playing the role of Madame Renaud has proved especially in line with Krista’s talents – finally, a place to showcase her overly masculine walk! Many thanks to family and friends for their patience and support during this hectic rehearsal season!

Artists Paul Cooper Edouard Dindon

brain we fear has now been broken by the incessant musical theatre in the house): much love to you both.

Joel Guénette Chantal For those of you scoring at home, this is Paul’s seventh appearance in a Royal MTC/MBA Lawyers Play. Were we to average that out over the number of years he’s been a practicing member of the bar, it means he’s appeared in 58 per cent of the shows since his call – a number eerily reminiscent of his marks in law school. If there’s a lesson to be learned here, it’s that surrounding oneself with people of talent and ability can make up for a great many shortcomings. Thus, Paul is immensely grateful for the hard work of Steven, Sofia, Danny, Eric, Chuck, Melinda and the Royal MTC professionals, and extremely proud of the equally hard work of his incredible castmates. More than this, he is forever thankful for the unwavering support of his lovely wife Anne and irrepressible son Declan (whose

I auditioned for the role of Zaza, but was told I was much too beautiful and young to play such an ancient high-maintenance witch, so I was cast as the gorgeous Chantal and they gave Zaza to Richard. I’m really Richard’s understudy. Really. If (when) Zaza has a tragic and totally unforeseeable accident (like being pushed down some stairs by a pair of perfectly manicured hands), who will be there? Chantal (me). She is (I am) the only one who is young enough, pretty enough, and talented enough to be relied upon to take the place of a tired old geriatric hag like Zaza (Richard). Obviously.

Artists Melissa Hazelton

Vivian Hilder

Angelique

Frances

Melissa is thrilled to be appearing in her fourth Royal MTC/MBA Lawyers Play. In real life, Melissa works at Manitoba Prosecutions as a Crown Attorney. This year she has also been volun-told into the role of Co-Chair to the Criminal Lawyers Section of the MBA. She would like to say a huge thank you to her ever-supportive friends and family for not pretending they don’t know her when she randomly busts out the can-can or sings quietly(ish) to herself in public. Much love to everyone at Royal MTC for all of their efforts at making us look like we know what we’re doing. Enjoy the show!!!

Vivian is pleased to play Frances the terrible stage manager, and to work with this very funny, vibrant, caring bunch of lawyers and theatre pros. She has been in a few Lawyers Plays, most recently as Olive in The Odd Couple (female version). She sends huge thanks to Steven, Robbie, Sofia, Danny and Eric, Chuck, Melinda and the band and all the other talented people behind the scenes for patiently sharing their expertise to help all of us bring the message of La Cage to life for you.

Reannah Hocken Anne

Kate Henley Bitelle

This is Kate’s debut performance in the Lawyers Play. Her dance career began at the age of four and really took off in law school where she danced in, and choreographed for, Osgoode Hall’s annual Mock Trial production. She overcame a debilitating back injury in order to perform what some might call the highlight of her career: French Drag Queen #3. In her spare time, Kate is an articling student at Gindin Wolson Simmonds Roitenberg, and is excited to take the courtroom stage as a criminal defense attorney in June. Kate is grateful to the cast and crew for this experience, and thanks her family, friends, and Tylenol 3 for their support! Much like Kanye West, Kate’s only regret is not being able to see herself and fellow cast members perform on stage.

10

This is Reannah’s sixth appearance in the Royal MTC/MBA production, and she is delighted to be participating with such a marvellous cast and crew. When Reannah isn’t being exceedingly charming in St. Tropez, France, she practises family law at Deeley Fabbri Sellen. Unfortunately, the skills aren’t transferable in the slightest – rumour has it that skipping through the law courts building is frowned upon. Thanks to Matthew for his patience and love throughout this process, despite my insistence that between work and rehearsals I am so busy that I don’t have time to hang up any clothes, ever. Thank you to everyone for attending. Your support means so much. Enjoy the show!

Artists Jessica Isaak

Ryan Krahn

Hanna

Odette

This is Jessica’s first appearance in the Royal MTC/MBA production, and she is thrilled to be a part of such an amazing team. Jessica grew up performing in various theatre and dance productions, and is grateful for the opportunity to return to musical theatre. She wishes to thank the cast and creative team at Royal MTC for making her first experience with the Lawyers Play such a memorable one! Jessica is currently articling at Fillmore Riley LLP and has accepted an associate position with Fillmore’s family department.

Bryan Klein M. Renaud/Cagelle

This is Ryan’s first appearance in the Royal MTC/MBA Lawyers Play, and marks his return to the stage after surviving a decade-long break from theatre. Ryan saw the studentrun Wendy Babcock Drag Show every year he could while attending Osgoode Hall Law School, and gives credit to all the fabulous performers he saw there for sparking his interest in performing in drag. Ryan thanks his family for all their support throughout the rehearsals and performances, and all the cast and creative team members for welcoming him into this other “family” this year. He is an associate at Loewen Henderson Banman Legault LLP in Steinbach.

Mark O’Neill Georges Bryan is a partner at Aikins, MacAulay and Thorvaldson LLP. His previous Royal MTC/ MBA productions include Guys and Dolls (in which he played Nathan to Gail’s Adelaide), 12 Angry Jurors, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, You Can’t Take It With You, Cabaret and Gypsy. Bryan appeared frequently at the U of M with the Glee Club and Stage Society. His principal roles include performances in Guys and Dolls, Kiss Me, Kate and MTC Children’s Theatre, and in CBC radio drama. At Rainbow Stage he appeared in The Wizard of Oz and in their first production of Fiddler on the Roof. He is married to Susan Halprin and is dad to Baillie and Daniel, Sarry and Julie, and Zadie to Lyla Bea.

12

This is Mark’s seventh Royal MTC/MBA show and, unlike in his last performance, he won’t be wearing a swastika. This is the first time Mark will be playing a man in … show business. When not on the boards, Mark conducts his own law practice and teaches change management to large organizations. He would like to thank his wife, Tara, for her patience during rehearsals and the entire cast and production crew for making this an enriching experience.

Artists Jeff Palamar

Laura Robinson

Phaedra

Tabarro/Waiter

Jeff is pleased and surprised to make his theatrical debut in La Cage aux Folles. He blames this on a flippant comment to a friend (“I should do the play one year!”) who rudely remembered that moment of weakness, and challenged him to audition. Throw in some encouragement from Angie and Bailey (“you’ll look taller in heels!”) and voila, meet Phaedra. Not surprisingly, the required “manscaping” proved a bigger challenge than the dancing and singing. Many thanks to the enormously talented and supportive team at Royal MTC, as well as all family and friends who have made this crazy adventure a reality.

Sandi Phillips Babette

Sandi is pleased to be back for her second appearance in the Royal MTC/MBA play. She is in awe of her multi-talented and courageous cast-mates and so grateful for the opportunity to work (and play) with them and the dedicated Royal MTC crew. Sandi appears courtesy of the Manitoba Hydro Law Division and thanks her friends, family and colleagues for their support and encouragement, but most of all, James, Matthew and Laura for their patience, love and support.

Laura is thrilled to be returning for her second Royal MTC/MBA Lawyers Play, having made her debut on stage in Legally Blonde. In real life Laura practices criminal defence at Gindin, Wolson, Simmonds, Roitenberg. Thank you to the cast and Royal MTC for making this a great experience. Enjoy the show!

Evan Roitenberg Jacob

Evan has had the honour of playing Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof; Danny in Grease; Audrey II in Little Shop of Horrors; Max in The Producers and many other indulgences courtesy of Royal MTC. None have taxed his acting chops or made his feet hurt like the role of Jacob. A maid??? Has anyone seen the state of his office? Evan practices in the area of criminal law with Gindin Wolson Simmonds Roitenberg. And speaking of divas… Evan would like to thank the three at home who allow him to engage in such pursuits as often as they do. And of course, ‘zis for you, Papa’. Enjoy the show (and his legs)!

Jaime Rosin Paulette

Jaime is so excited to be a part of her third Lawyers Play in a row, especially with a show as hilarious and touching as La Cage! It truly has been a DRAG in the best possible way! Neil Steen After a five-year hiatus, Priti is honoured to return to the Royal MTC/MBA stage for her 13th production. From the Hot Box to the Kit Kat Club to the Cell Block to the Tropicana, it’s been a blast working with another amazing cast and crew. Anyone looking for Priti’s usual costume should know she’s donated her corsette, fishnets and stilettos to castmate Garth Smorang, who is rather fond of lifting dresses from wardrobe. Now don’t all those guys clean up nicely in their gowns and heels!? Thanks go to my daughter Bethlehem for inspiring me to return to the stage, to my mom and dad for seeing me through a long tough winter and to Robb Paterson who made me giggle through the early rehearsals when I was in so much pain. I dedicate this performance to the late Ron Meyers, who is especially missed during production time, and to my friend Darren Sawchuk, who is battling the Big C.

Jean-Michel

Neil is delighted to be back at the Tom Hendry Warehouse for La Cage aux Folles. He has previously appeared in a number of Royal MTC/MBA productions, including: How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Legally Blonde and The Mousetrap. Neil would like to thank Steven, Sofia, Danny, Robbie, Chuck, Melinda, Eric and the rest of the fabulous artistic team at Royal MTC for all their hard work, encouragement and good humour. Special thanks to Voula for her patience, love and support.

Maria Versace Colette

Garth Smorang Etienne/Cagelle

This is my fourth Royal MTC/MBA Lawyers Play – after The Caine Mutiny Court Martial (1996), Guys and Dolls (1998) and The Producers (2010) – but the first for which I had to shave my back, arms and legs. It hurt. And whoever invented high-heeled shoes obviously never had to wear them (never mind dance). It is always a delight to meet and work with talented people, including lawyers with whom I have acted previously, and a whole bunch of new and younger ones. The special

Maria is excited to be returning to the stage for her fourth Royal MTC/MBA show! After cooing as a pigeon in the The Producers, perfecting her “bend and snap” in Legally Blonde: The Musical and working behind the scenes as Assistant Stage Manager on How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Maria now makes her return to the spotlight as Colette in La Cage aux Folles. Artists Richard L. Yaffe Albin

Preparing for the role of Albin actually began when I played Emcee in the 2005 Royal MTC/ MBA production of Cabaret. The transformation and honesty needed for that role evolved to become life-changing and permitted me, finally, to be who I am. In La Cage aux Folles, Albin teaches us the value of loyalty, of family, of love, of now. It is a privilege to speak and sing his words. Thank-you to family and friends for your support, to the entire company, and to the professionals who were determined to make each of us as good as we can be. The idea of my playing Albin in La Cage was a dream of my partner John – probably in part because of the parallels between the play and our own lives together, including my love for his children and our grandchildren. My thanks and profound love to John for everything – especially for coping with his high-maintenance partner (did I mention that there are also personality parallels between Albin and me?). I dedicate this performance to my Mom, who in some universe is sitting third row centre every night and mouthing to me, after each song I sing: “Beautiful.” aikins.com/our-team/richard_yaffe
