MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR It is so wonderful to welcome audiences back to the theatre. Gathering together to share stories is an innate part of who we are as humans, and the absence has only served to remind us of how vital this need is within us all. Making art is an exquisite experience. It is a convergence of so many hearts and minds drawn together, reaching for the stars to make manifest the world of the play, all for the many souls gathering in the dark to experience it. I am forever grateful for this creative team who have brought their ideas, Kelly Thornton
and their passion to this process. Their talent is astonishing and the care and commitment they’ve
brought to this work has inspired me every day. This time-travelling adventure of the heart has challenged all of us to reach beyond the limits to make magic on stage. Orlando is a beautiful journey of a poetic soul searching for who they are amidst the burden of what society dictates them to be. The young boy with the sword slashing through the air is looking for someone or something to make him feel whole. The woman who is reduced to her attributes, and dictated by roles and responsibilities imposed upon her gender, seeks freedom and a desire to truly be seen. For me this play investigates boundlessness. Through Orlando’s transcendence of time and gender, Woolf asks us to dissolve the rigidity that limits us. Written nearly 100 years ago, this piece continues to resonate, as we make meaning of our lives today. This journey towards the self is universal, as we live many lives, experience many loves, and seek understanding and acceptance of who we truly are. Thank you for joining us,

ORLANDO
Playwright’s Notes BY SARAH RUHL In 1927, Virginia Woolf wrote in a letter: “Yesterday morning I was in despair... I couldn’t screw a word from me; and at last dropped my head in my hands: dipped my pen in the ink, and wrote these words, as if automatically, on a clean sheet: Orlando: A Biography. No sooner had I done this than my body was flooded with rapture and my brain with ideas. I wrote rapidly... But listen; suppose Orlando turns out to be Vita.” Vita Sackville-West was, along with Leonard Woolf, one of Woolf’s great loves. Orlando became a fictional, fantastical, pseudo-biographical conglomerate of the many lives of Vita Sackville-West, who was also a poet,
cross-dresser, aristocrat, and consummate gardener (her estate was given to her family by Queen Elizabeth, and was then taken away from Vita in her lifetime because of her gender). “All these ancestors and centuries of silver and gold have bred a perfect body,” Woolf said of Vita. Woolf wrote the book more quickly than any of her others, “at the top of her speed,” and in higher spirits. She wrote to Vita, “It’s all about you and the lusts of your mind.” She was determined to break out of the rigid form of the novel saying, “I will never write a novel again,” and Orlando will be “truthful but fantastic.” Orlando is then part novel, part fabulation, part biography, part theatrical escapade, part poetry, and full of complex private messages to Vita, leading Vita’s son to call it “the longest love-letter in the English language.”
SYNOPSIS – Orlando, a charismatic nobleman with shapely legs, embarks on a lifetime of adventures. His journey begins as a young man in the Elizabethan age. Often at a loss for words, he struggles to write a poem about an oak tree. Orlando becomes the Queen’s object of affection, but his attention wanders and he becomes engaged to Euphrosyne, one of the ladies of the court. During the Great Frost, Orlando meets Sasha, a Russian Princess and they escape to London (goodbye, Euphrosyne). Sasha melts – and then breaks – Orlando’s heart. Then comes the thaw and the 17th century. Orlando returns to the country where he is pursued by the Archduchess of Romania. He flees to Constantinople. After a raucous evening and late-night encounter with a Spanish dancer, Orlando sleeps for seven days and awakes as a woman. Orlando sails back to England in the 18th century, where she discovers the penalties and privileges of being a woman. She revisits her poem and becomes reacquainted with the Archduchess, who returns as the Archduke. Finding herself in the 19th century, Orlando submits to the spirit of the age and takes a husband, Marmaduke. Orlando’s story ends in the 20th century where the past collides with the present. She finally finishes The Oak Tree as the first stroke of midnight sounds.

ORLANDO
Worlds of Orlando and Vita When Virginia Woolf penned Orlando, she wrote the titular character to represent English author and garden designer Vita Sackville-West. The following table outlines the world of the play in relation to the life of Vita. WORLD OF ORLANDO
WORLD OF VITA SACKVILLE-WEST
Orlando becomes a member of Queen Elizabeth I’s Royal Court and is gifted land and a house by the Queen.
Knole House is presented as a gift to Vita’s ancestor, Thomas Sackville, from Queen Elizabeth I.
Orlando meets and begins a relationship with Princess Sasha of Russia.
Vita has a relationship with Violet Trefusis. Most of their love affair is conducted in the French countryside.
Orlando catches Princess Sasha sitting on the knee of a Russian Sea Captain. Sasha departs London soon after.
Vita and Violet’s affair ends. Vita accuses Violet of cheating. Violet had promised to never sleep with her spouse while with Vita, but Vita’s husband reveals Violet had chosen to sleep with him. Vita believes him.
Orlando meets and is courted by the Archduchess/Archduke.
Vita begins a courtship with her suitor, Lord Henry Lascelles. The courtship ends as Vita finds Lord Henry boring.
Orlando falls asleep as a man and wakes up as a woman.
Following her relationship with Violet Trefusis where she cross-dressed and used the name Julian, Vita begins dressing in androgynous clothes on a permanent basis.
The limitations of her gender are revealed to Orlando when she is faced with a lawsuit denying her the right to property because she is a woman.
Vita’s uncle inherits the family home after her father dies. Vita should have inherited the property, but cannot as she is a woman.
Orlando marries Marmaduke in order to conform to the ‘spirit of the age.’ Marmaduke’s feminine understanding complements Orlando’s masculine independence.
Vita marries Harold Nicolson. Her marriage is used as a guise for her relationships with women.
Orlando, now age 36, completes her poem The Oak Tree.
Vita turns 36; her relationship with Virginia Woolf ends. Her poem The Land is published. CHART SOURCE: STUDY GUIDE FROM SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY’S 2015 PRODUCTION OF ORLANDO

When Vita Met Virginia BY EMMA WELHAM, PRODUCTION DRAMATURG *Trigger warning: mentions of suicide and abuse*
Vita Sackville-West
Virginia Woolf
“And instantly the usual exciting devices enter my mind: a biography beginning in the year 1500 and continuing to the present day, called Orlando: Vita; only with a change about from one sex to the other” – virginia woolf’s diary entry, oct 5, 1927 The year was 1922. In London, in December, Vita Sackville-West meets Virginia Woolf at a dinner party. Vita, age 30, is a best-selling author. Virginia, age 40, is relatively unknown. Nevertheless, Vita knows of Virginia’s work and greatly admires her. The morning after the party, Vita writes to her husband about how much she adores Virginia and Virginia writes in her journal about the impact Vita had made on her. The two begin to bond over their respective childhoods and become friends, then lovers. Though at the time relationships with a partner of the same sex were taboo, Vita had already had several relationships with women, most notably Violet Trefusis. During her relationship with 8
Ovation
Violet, Vita had begun to dress as a boy named Julian. She adopted this persona both as an expression of self, and because of the danger she would be in should she be found to be in a relationship with a woman. Meanwhile, Virginia was part of The Bloomsbury Group: a collection of artists, writers, intellectuals and philosophers who, according to Dorothy Parker, “lived in squares, painted in circles and loved in triangles”. Virginia was aware of Vita’s past relationships and admired that Vita pursued relationships with women. Over the course of their relationship, Virginia and Vita had a tremendous effect on each other. Scholars agree that the work each produced during november/december 2021
ORLANDO their relationship reached heights not achieved before or after their affair. Virginia writes Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse and Orlando. Vita publishes her epic poem The Land, and her novel Seducers in Ecuador, amongst others. Vita supports Virginia and helps her begin healing from the trauma and abuse she endured in childhood. With Vita, Virginia is able to have her first satisfying erotic relationship, and when the two travel to France, Virginia even purchases a mirror noting that thanks to Vita she can look at herself for the first time in her life. In 1927, Virginia has the idea to write Orlando. The story flows quickly for Virginia and she says that the process of writing it is like taking a writer’s holiday. Vita and her life are embedded through-out the novel (to read about some of them, see the chart on page 7), and Vita falls in love with the character of Orlando, telling Virginia that she has discovered a new form of narcissism. When Orlando is published it is an immediate success. It helps give Virginia the same notoriety Vita had, and gives Virginia a piece of Vita that is forever hers. And then, the relationship ends. Though the two remain on good terms, they have disagreements over political issues, and Virginia is bothered by the fact that Vita has continued to have relations with other people during their relationship. Not to mention, both Virginia and Vita are married throughout their time together. Though, it should be noted that neither husband has objected to the relationship. Leonard, Virginia’s husband, saw the effect Vita had on Virginia, and Harold, Vita’s husband, dated other men and enjoyed an open relationship with Vita. november/december 2021
So, the two women go their separate ways but remain friends. When Virginia later dies by suicide, Leonard writes to Vita because he doesn’t want Vita to hear about the death from the papers. Years after Virginia’s death, Vita writes to her husband that she believes that she might have been able to save Virginia. And through all this the story of Orlando lives on, and in 1998, American playwright Sarah Ruhl adapts it for The Piven Theatre Workshop in Illinois. Sarah’s adaption is based in story book theatre, a kind of ensemble based, narrative theatre. Sarah grew up admiring the works of Virginia, and this admiration is evident in her adaption. For instance, Sarah also states that she uses narration in the piece because “Woolf’s language is so much better than any of her imitators could ever be”, and much of the text found in the play comes directly from the novel. Sarah’s adaption was re-worked in 2010 for a New York premiere, and that is the version being presented by Royal MTC. Enjoy.

ORLANDO
Orlando and Gender: A Twenty-First Century View BY JOSEPHINE KEARNS, GENDER CONSULTANT *Please note that this section contains spoilers for Orlando* “The change seemed to have been accomplished painlessly and completely and in such a way that Orlando herself showed no surprise at it.” When Virginia Woolf wrote Orlando in 1928, she created a character who magically and unexpectedly changed genders halfway through life. Yet she had little sense of how such a story might land in the twenty-first century. The world’s first gender clinic, in Berlin, was less than a decade old; it would be several decades more before the word transgender would be coined. Today transgender rights are part of a worldwide conversation, and it is not difficult to draw parallels between Orlando and modern experiences of transness. It is likely that many of our trans, non-binary, and Two-Spirit audience members – as well as some of our many TNB2S artists working on the show – see bits of themselves in Orlando. Yet Orlando isn’t trans. The experience of waking up one day, unsurprised to have transformed, is an allegory – not how gender actually works. So it’s important we take care in drawing parallels. What about Vita Sackville-West, on whom Orlando was based? We know she referred to herself as a crossdresser, but the available language in 1928 differed from today’s. In a modern context it’s easy to imagine Vita identifying as a trans man, as non-binary, as 10
Ovation
a butch woman, or more. Ultimately, of course, we cannot know. But Orlando does shed light on the differences between walking in the world as a man versus as a woman, and many of those differences are just as present today. It is still considered unbecoming in a man to weep; women are still largely expected to be “obedient, chaste, and scented” through “tedious discipline.” And Orlando reacts with surprise when the Captain touches her, or when her servants begin discussing her childbearing abilities. For women’s bodies are still today touched and discussed in ways that men’s are not. We can also say that while Orlando is not a trans story, it is absolutely a queer story. Orlando falls in love with Sasha without knowing her gender; the Archduke falls in love with Orlando knowing he’s a man, then continues his advances when Orlando proves to be a woman; and we know Orlando “became the adored of many women and some men.” And, yes, Orlando – a character inspired by Virginia Woolf’s queer, cross-dressing lover – changes genders. And when she does change genders, Orlando finds immediate acceptance among everyone she knows. Even today, a hundred years later, it is only within queer communities that such acceptance can be expected. We hope such acceptance is one of the many lessons the world can take from Orlando today. november/december 2021

Playwright
Virginia Woolf was an English author, feminist, essayist, publisher and critic, considered as one of the foremost modernists of the twentieth century along with T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, James Joyce and Gertrude Stein. Her parents were Sir Leslie Stephen (1832–1904), who was a notable historian, author, critic and mountaineer, and Julia Prinsep Duckworth (1846–1895), a renowned beauty. According to Woolf’s memoirs, her most vivid childhood memories were not of London but of St. Ives in Cornwall, where the family spent every summer until 1895. This place inspired her to write one of her masterpieces, To the Lighthouse. Virginia’s most famous works include the novels Mrs Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927) and Orlando (1928), and the book-length essay A Room of One’s Own (1929), with its famous dictum, “A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.” In some of her novels she moves away from the use of plot and structure to employ stream-of-consciousness to emphasise the psychological aspects of her characters.
Sarah Ruhl is an award-winning American playwright, author, essayist and professor. Her plays include The Oldest Boy, Dear Elizabeth, Stage Kiss, In the Next Room or the vibrator play (Pulitzer Prize finalist, 2010); The Clean House (Pulitzer Prize finalist, 2005; Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, 2004); Passion Play (Pen American Award, Fourth Freedom Forum Playwriting Award from the Kennedy Center); Dead Man’s Cell Phone (Helen Hayes Award for Best New Play); Melancholy Play; Demeter in the City (nine NAACP Image Award nominations); Scenes From Court Life; How to Transcend a Happy Marriage, For Peter Pan on Her 70th Birthday; Eurydice; Orlando; and Late: a cowboy song. Her plays have been produced on Broadway and across the country as well as internationally, and translated into 14 languages. Originally from Chicago, Ms. Ruhl received her M.F.A. from Brown University, where she studied with Paula Vogel. She is the recipient of a Helen Merrill Emerging Playwrights Award, a Whiting Writers’ Award, a PEN Center Award for mid-career playwrights, a Steinberg Distinguished Playwright Award and a Lilly award. She is a member of 13P and New Dramatists and won the MacArthur Fellowship in 2006. She teaches at Yale School of Drama and lives in Brooklyn with her family.

INDIVIDUAL GIVING
“That we survive the shock at all is only possible because the past shelters us on one side and the future on the other.” – orlando Over the past two years so many things have changed for all of us, but one thing that has remained constant is the support of our community! Our amazing donors have sheltered us through this period and allowed us to keep telling incredible stories. Because of donors we’ve been able to: • Create four brand-new digital productions that captivated audiences and provided meaningful work to our artists, production departments and staff. • Provide affirming and deeply affecting mentorship for young artists through the National Mentorship Program. • Launch seven new plays by Indigenous playwrights through the Pimootayowin Creators Circle. • And, of course, bring theatre back to the stage for you to enjoy with Orlando! Now it’s even easier to make an ongoing impact through our monthly giving program – The Drama Club! You’ll gain the benefits of your cumulative annual donation right away, plus exclusive benefits for monthly donors! For example, if you commit to a monthly donation of $25, you’ll receive all the benefits from the $300 giving level. For information about donating and a full list of donor benefits, please contact Chris Turyk, Development Manager, at 204 954 6412 or cturyk@royalmtc.ca
Our Drama Club was treated to a night of thrills and chills exploring songs from some of our favourite spooky musicals at our first in-person event!
