MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR When we decided to commission our own adaptation of A Christmas Carol, playwright Bruce McManus came to mind. McManus understands people — how they think and how they talk — but he also understands that, in the theatre, humanity must be revealed through action. Not only is he a wonderful writer but, as a former social worker, he has a keen understanding of the injustices Charles Dickens sought to overcome. We pledged not to be bound too literally by Dickens, aware that too slavish an imitation would shackle the imagination necessary to reinvent it for Steven Schipper the stage. We swore there were no sacred cows — for a time, Bruce even changed Tiny Tim’s “God bless us every one” to “God bless us one and all.” But, in the end, he crept ever closer to the original. Flights of fancy are all well and good, we learned, but A Christmas Carol has earned its continued popularity. Dickens is a master of character-revealing dialogue, a careful crafter of suspense, and a keen proponent of social change through individual redemption. We cannot fix the whole world, Dickens and McManus seem to say. We cannot end all wars, heal all the sick, or shelter all the homeless — but we can all reach out to those in our own province. There are thousands of Bob Cratchits and Tiny Tims in this city. We need only wake up — like Scrooge — to the knowledge that it’s never too late — or too early — to share the spirit of Christmas with them. Yours always,

LULU STREET BY ANN HENRY

There is something special about a play set in the place where you live. You can visit the sites mentioned, walk its streets (however much they may have changed) and realize, distant though it feels, that what you saw onstage is part of your history. For Winnipeggers, Ann Henry’s Lulu Street is one of those pieces. Commissioned by the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire (IODE), it premiered at MTC in 1967 as

a Centennial project. It tells a personal family story within the crisis of the Winnipeg General Strike of 1919, a central event in the city’s history that still resonates today.

4

It was MTC’s 10th season and, while new Canadian plays may have seemed exotic to theatre-goers

in other cities, they weren’t a novelty for Winnipeg. MTC had a solid record of presenting new work, despite the company’s short history. Certainly it made sense to present a new play at an important moment in the nation’s (and theatre’s) history. Ann Henry, a columnist for the longgone Winnipeg Tribune, came from the old school of working-class journalists. She wrote Lulu Street as both a domestic play about a father and daughter caught in the strike and a political play about the unyielding idea of Winnipeg as North and South, the dividing line that still exists no matter how much progress we claim in uniting the city’s neighbourhoods. How was the play received here? It was a big hit, and its success helped spur the growing national playwriting/ production movement that would explode in the decades to follow. More important, perhaps, was its impact on the local audience, some of whom still remembered the strike. An outside view from American critic Julius Novick, who visited Winnipeg at the time, might give us some perspective. Knowing nothing about the history behind the play, he compared it to a play he did know, Sean O’Casey’s The Plough and the Stars, and its father-daughter story set in the Irish Rebellion of 1916.

It didn’t matter, as he wrote, that O’Casey’s play was a greater one though he praised our play’s “substantial merits.” What was important is that, for the local audience, “…a play can, in the proper circumstances, make up in immediacy what it lacks in absolute value.” He noted that many regional theatres overlook this fact, the deep human need to see our own troubles and our own town reflected on our stage. This wasn’t patronizing rhetoric; Novick had tapped into something profound that is still true for theatre audiences today. Lulu Street is now 50 years old and, since 1967, other plays about the strike have joined Manitoba’s dramatic canon. Fox by Margaret Sweatman, Strike! by Danny Schur and Rick Chafe, and Bolshie Bash by William Harrar all draw their inspiration from the same event. Lulu Street itself had several more stage productions and a broadcast on CBC after its run at MTC. Winnipeg continues to commemorate the strike’s importance, with the new architectural november/december 2017

monument now erected at the corner of Lily Street and Market Avenue. As the centennial of the great strike itself approaches, perhaps it is time to look again at Lulu Street and other plays from MTC's early years. How would an audience today react? That’s worth a speculation or two. What is — and was — important was that MTC produced Lulu Street when it did, ushering in both a new century for Canada and a new theatre movement that put our own history centre stage. RORY RUNNELLS

A CHRISTMAS CAROL

About Charles Dickens “Charles Dickens is much loved for his great contribution to classic English literature. He was the quintessential Victorian author. His epic stories, vivid characters and exhaustive depiction of contemporary life are unforgettable.” – BBC

Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was one of England’s greatest Victorian novelists. Like many others, Dickens began his literary career as a journalist, working with The Mirror of Parliament and The True Sun. In 1833, he became a parliamentary journalist for The Morning Chronicle. This higher-ranking position gave him access to new contacts in the press, which allowed him to publish a series of sketches entitled Sketches by Boz, under a pseudonym. In 1836, he published his highly-successful first novel, The Pickwick Papers. Dickens was also a theatre enthusiast. He wrote several plays and performed for Queen Victoria in 1851. His passion for social issues also proved to be inexhaustible, as he spent time abroad lecturing in the United States about slavery. A Christmas Carol is one of his most famous works and is one of the most frequently adapted books in history. His other novels include: Oliver Twist, The Old Curiosity Shop, David Copperfield and A Tale of Two Cities. Most of Dickens’ works are characterized by attacks on social evils, injustice and hypocrisy.

A VERY DICKENS CHRISTMAS Seven years after the publication of A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens shared memories of his own Christmases with readers of his weekly magazine Household Words. In “A Christmas Tree,” Dickens shared that looking at a beautiful tree lit with candles brought back memories of toys he received as a child, including a cardboard lady who danced when placed near a candle and Noah’s ark, in which the wooden butterflies were only slightly smaller than the elephants.

Equally vivid were his memories of ghost stories — the telling of ghost stories being almost as central to Victorian-era Christmas celebrations as plum pudding. Dickens recalled the tale of a jilted housemaid who, having drowned herself in a pond, haunts the home of her seducer wearing a muddy dress. He also remembered the story of phantom carriages that roar about a manor house at night, signalling an imminent death in the family.

These stories from Dickens’ childhood, like similar tales Victorians shared with their friends at Christmas, were not set during the Christmas season and didn’t have holiday themes. With the publication of A Christmas Carol in December 1843, Dickens took tradition in a new direction, giving his ghost story a seasonal spin. Dickens created a story both for and about Christmas and his audience was deeply appreciative. november/december 2017

A CHRISTMAS CAROL Dickens went on to write four more Christmas books, including A Cricket on the Hearth, a tale of suspected infidelity in a May-December marriage. As with A Christmas Carol, these books were published in the week before Christmas and were popular gifts. Dickens also enjoyed success reading A Christmas Carol, among other works, to sold-out audiences. Dickens, who loved the theatre and was an energetic amateur actor, made a great deal of money by reading his work to audiences, perhaps as much as from the sale of his books. Accounts of these readings describe Dickens standing in front of a line of gas jets placed to illuminate his face, with a sounding board behind him to amplify his voice. Some reviewers were more interested in the reader than the book itself. Among them was celebrated American author Mark Twain who attended a reading in New York and regretted to report that Dickens’ “voice is husky” and he had “a comical Scotchterrier look about the face.” There were, however, many enthusiastic reviews. An audience member in London proposed: “Never, probably, through the force of mere reading was a vast concourse held so completely within the grasp of one man as the audience assembled in St. James’s Hall.” A Christmas Carol has a timeless feel. The messages about the value of community, the rewards of charitable giving, and the healing power of memory feel as relevant now as ever. Scrooge’s initial refusal of his nephew’s invitation to celebrate Christmas, in addition to his cold reception of the men seeking a donation are evidence of withdrawal from his community. He is able, with the help of the spirit visitors, november/december 2017

to remember better, younger versions of himself. Scrooge is renewed by his memories and re-engages with his community. It’s worth noting that Dickens practiced what he preached. On Boxing Day 1843, Dickens met with friends to celebrate both the season and the success of his book. Within a week of its publication, 6,000 copies of A Christmas Carol had been sold and Dickens was in excellent spirits. The party was attended by several children, for whom Dickens had prepared a memorable surprise: a magic show that he performed in his host’s parlour. Having turned a box of bran into a guinea-pig and handkerchiefs into sweets, Dickens performed his finale, placing raw flour, raw eggs and other ingredients into a top hat and then, to the amazement of his audience, rolling out a steaming hot plum pudding. This example of Dickens’ embrace of the Christmas season and its pleasures, recounted in a letter by his friend Jane Carlyle, is, like his story of Scrooge, an inspiration to us to celebrate the season with playfulness, generosity and joy. We should be pleased indeed if we bring to our friends and family a portion of the pleasure that Dickens brought to the children he amazed with his magic pudding trick. Vanessa Warne teaches Victorian literature at the University of Manitoba. She volunteers at Dalnavert Museum and Visitors’ Centre and enjoys making Christmas pudding almost as much as she enjoys eating it.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL

PLUM PUDDING 2 cups bread crumbs, from   white homemade-type loaf 1/2 cup dark brown sugar 1/2 tsp ground allspice 1/2 tsp salt 3 eggs 1/2 cup brandy 1/8 cup fresh orange juice 1/8 cup fresh lemon juice additional brandy for feeding   the pudding & flaming

3/4 cup dried currants 1 cup white raisins 1/2 cup mixed candied peel 1/2 cup dried sour cherries 1/2 cup blanched slivered almonds 1 tart cooking apple-peeled,   quartered, chopped 1 carrot, coarsely chopped 1 tbsp grated orange peel 1 tsp grated lemon peel 1/4 lb chopped beef suet 1 cup all-purpose flour

SOURCE: THE COOKING OF THE BRITISH ISLES (TIME/LIFE, 1973)

Combine until well mixed: currants, raisins, candied peel, dried cherries, almonds, apple, carrot, orange peel, lemon peel and beef suet. Then add flour, bread crumbs, brown sugar, allspice, salt. Beat eggs until frothy in a separate bowl. Stir in brandy, citrus juices and pour this mixture over fruit mixture. Beat with a wooden spoon until blended. Place damp kitchen towel over bowl and refrigerate for at least 12 hours. Spoon the mixture into two 1-quart pudding basins or plain (heat resistant) bowls, filling them to within two inches of the top of the basins. Cover each basin with buttered foil, turning edges down and pressing the foil tightly around the bowls. Place a clean, damp kitchen towel over each basin and tie in place with kitchen string around the sides. Bring two opposite corners of the towel up to the top and knot them; bring up the remaining two corners and knot them similarly. Put basins in a large pot with enough boiling water to come 3/4 up the sides. Bring water to boil over high heat, cover pot tightly, then reduce to lowest flame possible and steam for eight hours. Add additional boiling water into the steaming chamber as necessary. When done steaming, remove from water and let cool to room temp. Remove towels and foil and recover with new foil. Refrigerate for at least three weeks before serving. May be kept for a year in the fridge, wrapped in cheesecloth. To serve, re-steam for two hours to gently heat through. Serve with heavy cream or your favourite rum butter sauce. Share the festive spirit! Take photos as you assemble, steam, store and eat your pudding and post them using #plumpuddingmtc. 12

An online e-Library has thousands of eBooks, eAudiobooks and more! All free to use with your library card. Visit us online at winnipeg.ca/library. MORE DICKENS

The Man Who Invented Christmas by Les Standiford. This rich and satisfying read for Scrooges and sentimentalists alike tells the story of how a debt-ridden and dispirited Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol in hopes of keeping his creditors at bay. 823.8 DICKENS 2008 The Cricket on the Hearth and Other Christmas Stories, by Charles Dickens. While they’re less well-known than A Christmas Carol, Dickens wrote many other Christmas stories combining realism with fantasy. These three tales are fine examples of how “good will toward men,” kindness and concern for the poor remain his central themes. FICTION DIC MORE History of the Holiday

Christmas in the Crosshairs by Gerry Bowler. Christmas is the biggest single event on the planet, a global phenomenon and a backbone of international trade. Whether one celebrates it or not, billions of people are caught up in its commercialism, sentiment and frenetic busyness. Bowler explores the scope of its influence and takes an entertaining look at the traditions we think we know so well. 263.91509 BOWLER 2017 Inventing Christmas by Jock Elliott. Where did the best-loved Christmas traditions spring from? With beautiful vintage art, this book illustrates how many of our current holiday traditions originated in the mid-1800s and how 36

Santa, the Christmas tree, gift-giving and Scrooge came to signify Christmas in the popular imagination. 394.2663 ELL MORE Seasonal Ghost Stories

High Spirits by Robertson Davies. Novelist Robertson Davies was also Master of Massey College at the University of Toronto, and began the tradition of telling a ghost story at the College’s annual Christmas party. This volume collects the charming stories he wrote for the tradition. FICTION DAV Christmas Days by Jeanette Winterson. This collection brings together 12 of Winterson’s brilliantly imaginative tales, plus a personal story of her own Christmas memories. A portal into the spirit of the season combined with mystery and a little bit of magic. FICTION WINTERSON More Dramatic Adaptations

We could fill this page with nothing but a list of filmed versions of A Christmas Carol, from Doctor Who to the Muppets. It seems everyone’s performed their own take on this archetypal story. The Library has both DVD and Blu-ray copies of many of the most popular adaptations to watch by the fire, from the 1951 edition featuring Alister Sim as Scrooge (film critic A. O. Scott considers this the best version ever filmed) to Bill Murray’s classic turn as a heartless modern-day executive in Scrooged.

Proudly supporting Royal MTC’s production of A Christmas Carol

2017

LEGACY GIVING Comedy. Jacques Brel. Macbeth (1980 with two actors alternating Macbeth and Macduff, and the same actress playing two very different Lady M’s. I saw one production at a Saturday matinee, and the other that evening.) Slightly more recently: Medea at the Warehouse. (Because of Seana McKenna.) (Okay, anything with Seana.) The Glass Menagerie. Jane Eyre. And last season’s Kill Me Now. Even thinking about it now makes me weep.

q&a with

Joan Stephens Joan Stephens became one of our first 60 Founders’ Circle members. We sat down with her to learn why she made the commitment to a Legacy Gift. What is special to you about this organization? There’s nothing like the magic of live theatre and, within that broad stroke, there’s nothing like the magic of Royal MTC. One theatre. Two stages. Ten plays. The second-largest Fringe Festival in North America (and, according to the artists, the best). A Master Playwright Festival. An annual Regional Tour. Theatre For Young Audiences. The breadth and depth of Royal MTC’s programming and its commitment to our community is unparalleled. Are there any plays in particular that resonated with you? Too many plays to count but the ones that really stand out: Godspell. Black 38

What surprises you most about this theatre? That I’m still crazy about it after all these years. Seriously though, what surprises me is that it still has the power to surprise me. When I least expect it, I’m completely blown away. (See Kill Me Now above for the most recent example.) What do you wish others knew about Royal MTC? I wish everyone understood just how committed Royal MTC has always been to ensure the greatest number of people of all ages and stages can attend live theatre. Over the 15 years I was privileged to work there as Director of Marketing, the board and staff were passionate that ticket price not be a barrier to attending our plays. Why have you chosen to leave a Legacy Gift to Royal MTC? I believe it’s vital that everyone can experience the power of live theatre. I want to ensure Royal MTC is here for at least another 60 years, and I want ticket prices to remain affordable for everyone — especially our younger theatre-goers.

INDIVIDUAL GIVING

The cast of A Christmas Carol, 2005. PHOTO BY B. MONK

THE SPIRIT OF GIVING We know the story well. Scrooge thinks only of himself, his business and acquiring wealth. He cares little for others. Then he’s visited by four ghosts on Christmas Eve. As the Spirits lead Scrooge to reflect on his life, he becomes a changed man. In embracing the spirit of giving, he receives so much more than he could have imagined. Once his heart is brightened, he’s generous with his time and his finances. He is able to know joy and share it with others. This classic tale demonstrates that the theatre is about more than entertainment. Your donations make an impact in so many ways. Your generosity is a gift to students who participate in our Theatre for Young Audiences and 50

Backstage Pass programs. And your donations help keep tickets affordable for all Manitobans to enjoy and share in the joy of theatre. Giving is easy. Consider becoming a Monthly Donor. Or perhaps a donation to Royal MTC might make a thoughtful gift for a friend who loves theatre. With all levels of giving there are many benefits to be enjoyed by our donors. More information about these programs is available on our website. So, with the spirit of giving in our hearts, let us declare with Tiny Tim, “God bless us every one!” Please contact Kris Olafson at 204 954 6412 or kolafson@royalmtc.ca to make a donation.
