MESSAGE FROM ROYAL MTC’S

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 20th anniversary of the Master Playwright Festival, honouring one of the greatest playwrights of all time, William Shakespeare. Some of the most memorable characters in Shakespeare’s oeuvre are the Rude Mechanicals in his comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This motley crew of tradesmen-turned-players, led by the greatest thespian of all, Nick Bottom, come together to put on the play of Pyramus and Thisbe for the Duke and Duchess on their wedding day. Their antics and adventure, as they rehearse and so passionately perform the play, are some of the most hilarious turns ever to grace a stage. I am reminded of these lovely souls, as players across the city have enveloped themselves in the masterful texts of the Bard, wrestled and rehearsed the exquisite language, and now take to the boards to unleash their plays in the festival. I welcome the many participating companies that have made this year’s festival, our final edition, the largest yet. And to you, our audience, thank you so much for joining us and for sharing in the delight of celebrating William Shakespeare’s incredible body of work, as well as the plays influenced by his canon. I encourage you to take in as many offerings as the festival provides, and to relish and revel in his artistry! See you at the theatre,

Kelly Thornton, Artistic Director Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre

“Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none.” - WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

WILLIAM SHAKESPE APRIL 23, 1564 – APRIL 23, 1616

William Shakespeare was a prolific writer during the Elizabethan and Jacobean ages of British theatre and is known to be one of the greatest poets and playwrights in English history. His works include 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two narrative poems and a collection of other poems. Some of his most well-known works include Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Hamlet and Henry V. William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564 to John Shakespeare and Mary Arden in the town of Stratford-uponAvon. He received his education at Stratford Grammar School but was pulled out early as his family couldn’t afford it. In 1582, he married Anne Hathaway and had three children, Susanna (1583) and twins Hamnet and Judith (1585).

EARE In 1592, Shakespeare left his family and went to London and began his acting career. It is said that the 1590s were his best years of writing plays and sonnets. Through the years, he progressed and improved in his work from actor, to teacher and then playwright. In London, he became a founding member of The Lord Chamberlain’s Men, a company of actors that later became The King’s Men. Many of his famous tragedies, such as Macbeth and King Lear, were written during his time in the company. Shakespeare died in Stratford-upon-Avon at the age of 52 and is buried in the sanctuary of the parish church, Holy Trinity.

GOODNIGHT DESDEMONA (GOOD MORNING JULIET) BY ANN-MARIE MACDONALD THEATRE PROJECTS MANITOBA Colin Jackson Theatre 393 Portage Avenue (3rd floor, Portage Place) Wheelchair accessible Capacity 79 Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) is an exuberant comedy and feminist revisioning of Shakespeare’s Othello and Romeo and Juliet. It takes us from a dusty office in Canada’s Queen’s University into the fraught and furious worlds of two of Shakespeare’s best-known tragedies and turns them upside down. Constance Ledbelly is the beleaguered “spinster” academic, and unlikely heroine, who embarks on a quest for Shakespearean origins and, ultimately, her own identity. A gender-bendy, big-hearted and crazily intelligent romp, where irony and anger sing in perfect harmony with innocence and poignancy. Conklin Theatre: Gail Asper Performing Arts Hall, Taché Hall 150 Dafoe Road, U of M Wheelchair accessible Capacity 99 Shakespeare’s great tragedy of a man of action beset by witches, war and his own ambitions. It tells the story of a couple, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, trapped in a world view that values violence and acquisition as the highest of masculine virtues, a world in which the drive to achieve runs in concert with the need to destroy and ravage: “When you durst do it, then you were a man.” This production takes place in the 80s, the period whose toxic masculinity still haunts us today. His most recent stare at the Bard has been Shakespeare in Love, firstly as a successful film and, as we saw locally, a marvellous adaptation for the stage. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern was a successful play in the 70s which Stoppard later directed as a film. All we can do is give this gifted dramatist a reading of that earlier work.
