MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR What is it about the Irish that makes us a little weak in the knees? Is it the lilting speech, the geographical mash-up of emerald hills and misty coastlines, or the way their stories all seem to hover exactly halfway between hope and heartbreak? And let’s not forget the Guinness! Of course, it’s hard to forget the Guinness when it’s right there onstage. Who knew that Once — the quirky little movie with the haunting theme song — would grow up to have its own pub on stages around the world. Don’t imagine that the pub is Steven Schipper

just a clever gimmick either. Long after the beer buzz wears off, you’ll remember how Guy and Girl

met in Dublin, and helped make each other’s dreams come true. We never see how the two Irish families in Outside Mullingar meet, because they’ve known each other all their lives. Their adjoining farms in Killucan are the source of an ancient grudge, muted a wee bit by sharp-tongued affection. Playwright John Patrick Shanley may have spent a lifetime writing about Italians (you can learn more about that at ShanleyFest), but it was his family’s home of Ireland that inspired this comedy about love and the land. In Once, Girl says, “You cannot walk through your life leaving unfinished love behind you!” Whether that unfinished love is a person, an ambition, or a place like Ireland, these plays persuade us that it’s never too late to finish what we started. Our lost loves, like our wayward dreams, can be wooed again, and won. Yours always,

The rez sisters BY TOMSON HIGHWAY

There have been many journeys in the creation of Canadian drama but the rise of Indigenous theatre in the 1980s was special. Although Indigenous storytelling has existed long before European contact, for the first time, a growing core of Indigenous artists entered professional Canadian theatre. None of the playwrights involved had more impact than Cree playwright Tomson Highway with The Rez Sisters and Dry Lips Oughta to Move to Kapuskasing. MTC presented Native Earth’s tour of The Rez Sisters in 1987, and produced an original production of Dry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasing in 1990 following its Toronto premiere. MTC also went on to support the development of Highway’s musical Rose. 1

2

Highway was born on his father’s trap-line, about 100 miles north of his family’s reserve, in Brochet, Manitoba. He earned his Bachelor of Arts Honours in Music at the University of Western Ontario, where he also worked with the great Canadian playwright James Reaney. He then worked with several Indigenous organizations before deciding, at the age of 30, to “put all this ‘training’ and preparation together” and write plays. The introduction to The Rez Sisters describes how this classically trained pianist thought that, if “he couldn’t put Chopin and ‘the rez’ together, then he would write plays about the ‘rez,’ just as Michel Tremblay wrote about ‘the Main.’” Highway saw his path clearly as noted in Books in Canada, 1989: “ So I started writing plays, where I put together my knowledge of Indian reality in this country with classical structure, artistic language.”

Vital to that goal was his introduction of Nanabush, the Trickster figure who was, as Highway explains it, “as pivotal and important a figure as Christ is in the realm of Christian mythology.” His first plays were seen in his community, and other Indigenous theatres, but jan/feb/mar 2018

the acclaim given The Rez Sisters when it won the 1986 Dora Mavor Moore Award in Toronto was a watershed. Highway’s own success was echoed by other rising Indigenous playwrights throughout Canada. Ontario Ojibway playwright Drew Hayden Taylor called this explosion of Indigenous theatre “the Big Bang.” Highway, Taylor, Maria Clements and David Daniel Moses were among the playwrights creating this artistic momentum, along with novelists and visual artists. Manitoba saw the appearance of Indigenous and Métis playwrights including Marvin Francis, Doug Nepinak, Yvette Nolan, Darrell Racine (writing with Dale Lakevold), Ian Ross,

and others. After attending Dry Lips, Ian Ross was inspired to begin writing fareWel, a play that went on to win the Governor General’s Award for Drama. Times change and artists move on. Highway became a successful novelist, though theatre lingers in his artistic soul — his one-woman show The (Post) Mistress premiered in 2010. One wishes for more plays, but he continues to inspire a new generation. Highway’s vision to set reserve reality and Indigenous myth within classical play structure was an artistic coupling which enriched the Canadian theatre canon and struck a chord that still resounds in our theatres. THE JOURNEY FROM

Indie Film TO

MULTI-AWARD-WINNING

Musical

Based on a 2006 independent film by John Carney, this captivating and endearing story explores topics of love, friendship and music that unite us all. Once follows the story of Guy, an Irish street musician who is on the verge of giving up on his dream, until Girl, a Czech immigrant, enters his life and changes everything. Inspired by her beauty and grace, he decides to pursue his music career and as their love intensifies, his music soars. It doesn’t get more romantic than falling in love in the streets of Dublin accompanied with charm-filled melodies, haunting lyrics, and a moving story about second chances from two unlikely souls. 8

Born in Dublin, Ireland in 1972, writer and director John Carney always had a knack for creating. In the early 1990s, he began to direct music videos for the band The Frames, for which he was also a bassist. As his passion for writing grew, he began writing and directing films including November Afternoon, a drama shot in black and white about the challenges of relationships. The film was named “Film of the Year” by the Irish Times, and Carney continued to develop several successful films including Begin Again, Zonad and Sing Street. The story of Once first started in 2005 when Carney had a eureka moment as he struggled to write this play. As the story unfolded on a single sheet of paper, he realized the universal appeal of the power of connection and therapeutic qualities of music. The characters in the story grew strong as Guy and Girl bonded over songwriting while falling in love.

ONCE With a small budget of $150,000, a crew of 12 people, and a cast of mostly non-actors, Carney created the film using even some of his friends as extras, not knowing how much of an impact a humble indie film would produce. After listening to The Swell Season which consisted of Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, Carney couldn’t help but love the heartwarming chemistry of the two, and knew they were the film’s stars. In addition to creating the on-screen ambiance, both Hansard and Irglová also wrote the enchanting music and lyrics including Falling Slowly which won an Oscar for Best Original Song. This indie film was then adapted into a musical by Irish playwright Enda Walsh, making its off-Broadway debut in 2011. In 2012, the musical appeared on Broadway garnering international attention and winning eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Book. In addition to receiving outstanding theatrical box office success, the film won the audience

awards at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival and the 2007 Dublin Film Festival. This toe-tapping musical continues to capture audiences worldwide with actors who play their own instruments, and an Irish pub on stage welcoming patrons to have a pint.

I KEPT THINKING, ‘HOW DO YOU MAKE A MODERN MUSICAL?’ THEN IT BECAME CLEAR THAT I COULD DO IT JUST LIKE A SMALL INDIE ART-HOUSE MOVIE, VERY NATURALISTICALLY. I COULD CREATE A WORLD WHERE IT’S OKAY TO BREAK INTO SONG, WITHOUT AN ORCHESTRA COMING UP OUT OF NOWHERE. — JOHN CARNEY

ONCE Q&A WITH MUSIC DIRECTOR

Joseph Tritt Once has been called “timeless.” Why? I think people are drawn to the two central characters. Guy and Girl seem destined to meet and help each other move forward, all the while making great music together. The music from the film (by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová) has a wonderful simplicity and emotional honesty about it. The arrangements for the stage show (by Martin Lowe) keep the essence of that, while broadening the colour palette to include bowed strings, accordion, etc. Interestingly, most of the music is diagetic, which means the music is being made in real time (the characters in the story are actually playing music — on the street, in a music store, in a pub, around a dinner table, in a recording studio — rather than breaking into song in the way characters often do in musical theatre). As a result, the music supports the storytelling in an even deeper way. We don’t have to suspend our disbelief.

get inside the orchestration and look at what each actor/musician has to do throughout each song. This is a show that calls for triple threat actors: actors who can sing, play an instrument and act. Do actors need to perform on all three levels? Not necessarily. However, we’re definitely seeing a trend where actors are being asked to play instruments in shows, for example, Once and Million Dollar Quartet . We’re also seeing directors using the actor-instrumentalist model as a storytelling device (i.e. John Doyle’s productions of the Stephen Sondheim shows). It’s definitely valuable to have an instrument in your arsenal, but not essential! Is it any different as a music director to work with actor-musicians rather than a more conventional orchestra pit?

I suppose in some ways it’s easier because we don’t have the period of adjustment when a pit orchestra is integrated into the show at which point an actor suddenly hears his/her song accompanied by strings, as opposed to the percussive accompaniment of a How did you prepare for Once? rehearsal piano — it can sometimes be jarring. In a show like Once, the actors Once is a little different for me because have the full show accompaniment from I’m not conducting or playing the show. day one because they are generating I studied the music (analysis of song the music themselves. For Once, my function is to help the actors to make music as an ensemble and to prepare them to lead the show each night without a conductor. 10

LEGACY GIVING

Q&A WITH Robert Kennedy & Claudette Leclerc MEMBERS OF ROYAL MTC FOUNDERS’ CIRCLE

Robert Kennedy and Claudette Leclerc’s association with Royal MTC goes back 35+ years. They have worked with Royal MTC as cultural professionals. Rob was once on staff at the theatre and Claudette has partnered with the organization as a member of the cultural community. Together, they have been volunteers, patrons, donors, and now they have chosen to deepen their commitment by becoming members of the Founders’ Circle. They spoke with us about their decision. Why is this theatre special to you? Royal MTC is a leader in Manitoba’s arts and culture sector and has mentored many up and coming cultural professionals. It also provides opportunities for developing young theatre professionals through apprenticeships and scholarships. Can you tell me about a favourite play and why it resonated with you? Come From Away is our new favourite Royal MTC theatre experience, and there are many! We laughed, we cried, we laughed, we cried, we... Come From Away was a great reminder to us all about the importance of making those who ‘come from away’ feel most welcome to Canada at anytime, regardless of how they may arrive in our home community. The show made us so proud to be Canadian and was worthy of a wonderfully enthusiastic standing ovation!! 28

We understand that a very important event in your life happened at the Warehouse. Can you tell us about it? We held our wedding reception in the lobby on Canada Day 1989 in the (then) newly renovated lobby of the Warehouse Theatre with a four-piece jazz group, 125 guests and a surprise visit from the fire department! It turns out the heat/smoke from the warming ovens in the green room set off the fire alarm! What other special memories of this theatre would you like to share? Royal MTC has gained a special place in the hearts of all members of our family from providing fabulous employment opportunities, mentorship, apprenticeship and volunteer opportunities plus hundreds of hours of great theatre at the Mainstage, Warehouse theatres, Fringe and Playwright festivals. Why have you chosen to become a member of Royal MTC’s Founders’ Circle, and why do you feel it is important that others join you? We want to play a small part in ensuring Royal MTC continues to thrive and support Canadian theatre professionals while engaging a growing audience. The Royal MTC Endowment Fund at The Winnipeg Foundation will ensure theatre will be there “For Good. Forever.”

CELEBRATING THE LIFE AND WORK OF

john patrick shanley and Danny and the Deep Blue Sea. Knowing he couldn’t make a living as a playwright, his gift of writing took him into the world of film where he wrote his first screenplay at around the age of 33.

Playwright, screenwriter, theatre and film director John Patrick Shanley creates stories with adventure, love and a little spunk. Born into an Irish-American family in the Bronx, Shanley began writing at a young age cultivating his passion for poetry. Drawn to the romanticism and selfexpression of theatre, he started his career as a playwright. Some of his works include Welcome to the Moon 30

Shanley’s storytelling style has influenced pop culture by offering a shift in perspective imbued with passion. Inspiration for this work stems from real-life experiences with stories that resonate with audiences worldwide. He stays true to himself through his art as stories from his past come to life on stage and screen. Both raw and relatable, works such as Prodigal Son display self-expression and vulnerability. This story closely resembles Shanley’s experience as a student, where the character Jim Quinn is headed for destruction, when a teacher takes him under her wing. His play Outside Mullingar offers a comedic look at romance set in an Irish farming community of Killucan. The relationship between Rosemary and her neighbour Anthony shows the obstacles in love and sorrow. Despite being born into an IrishCatholic family, Shanley became the go-to for Italian-American stories. He grew up in an Irish and Italian neighbourbood and was exposed to the Italian culture which he embraced. From the food they ate, the clothes they wore and how they freely Ovation

SHANLEYFEST expressed themselves, Shanley was drawn to this Italian influence which he incorporated into his writing. Works such as Italian American Reconciliation use these elements to explore his somewhat dysfunctional relationship with his mother. Throughout his career, Shanley received recognition and awards including a Tony Award and the Pulitzer Prize for his play Doubt. Several of his works like Outside Mullingar, Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, Italian American Reconciliation and Four Dogs and a Bone were also nominated for a Tony Award. He received both an Academy Award and the Writers Guild of American Award for his script Moonstruck, and in 2009 Shanley received The Writers Guild of America Lifetime Achievement Award.

Rural IRELAND Located on an island in the British Isles, Ireland spans approximately 84,431 square kilometres making it the thirdlargest island in Europe. The Republic of Ireland occupies 26 of 32 counties. It shares its border with Northern Ireland which covers the remainder of the island and is part of the United Kingdom. The total population as a whole is just over 4.7 million. Dublin is the capital and largest city of Republic of Ireland, which was founded originally as a Viking settlement. Groups such as Riata, Laigin and Cruthin have inhabited Ireland for more than 9,000 years. For the past 1,200 years, the Vikings, Normans, Welsh, Scots, English, Africans, South Americans and Eastern Europeans have lived on the land. The village of Killucan, where the Reillys and Muldoons reside, is located in the rolling hills of the County Westmeath 15 km from Mullingar, approximately 60 km from Dublin. It is said that the origin of the name Killucan derives from the Church of Lucan. A sixth century abbot, Lucan was said to have founded the church. Ireland is largely Christian with a majority of Roman Catholic denomination, and holds one of the highest rates 32

of church attendance in the Western World of 45%. Ireland’s religious diversity is growing with a Muslim and Jewish population due to immigration. Agriculture in Ireland not only plays a key role in the economy, but is also the heart of Irish culture. The land’s mild climate, abundance of rain and fertile soil allow for an abundance of growth. Going back to the beginning of human settlement, farming has been a family tradition and was passed down through many generations. In historic times, cattle farming represented status and wealth but as time passed, it became the norm. The potato became a staple food from the 17th century onwards due to land being not suitable for grain agriculture. It was not until the 20th century when modern machinery and fertilizers enabled farmers to grow other forms of food. Approximately 64% of its land is used for agriculture, with 80% devoted to grass. As part of the nightshade family, potatoes are easy to grow in good or poor soil. It contains a high source of vitamin C and B6, potassium and fibre which is key in providing nutrients from a compact and versatile veggie. The

symbolism of the potato has changed over the years from being regarded as a poor farmer’s livelihood, to a key source of nutrients that made the Irish stronger and healthier. More than three million acres were devoted to growing crops in 1998, with more than half of agricultural production being exported. Much of the land is used to support livestock, which is the leading source of Ireland’s exports. In addition to this, its agricultural acreage is used for growing a variety of crops including cereal, pasture, hay, roots and green crops. Ireland now thrives in crops including sugar beets, barley, wheat, potatoes and oats. The government of Ireland continues to support farmers and their love of the land through education, and capital assistance for maintenance of improvement of farm buildings and land development.

2017 REGIONAL TOUR

At Royal MTC, we aspire to reflect and inform the community we serve and we’re delighted to team with sponsors and presenters to bring quality, first-class live theatre to engaging rural audiences. We hit the road on November 19 with a holiday classic with a twist! Marking Royal MTC’s 40th consecutive regional tour, Rod Beattie shed Walt Wingfield’s overalls to inhabit all our favourite characters — from Scrooge to Tiny Tim — in his lively adaptation of A Christmas Carol. Joining Rod on this holiday trek were Doug Beattie (Company Stage Manager), Ian Kirk (Tour Technical Director) and James Thurmeier (Tour Technician). In just 34 days, the touring company travelled over 5,800 km, and played to more than 4,600 patrons in 24 communities across Manitoba and northwestern Ontario. We were delighted to return to three communities where we hadn’t performed in many years — Morris (1994/95), Dauphin (2011/12) and Eriksdale (2013/14). Christmas spirit was in the air as we travelled from town to town receiving the warmest of receptions in each and every community, with everyone overjoyed about Rod’s return to their home town stage. “Rod's performance was stunning and very moving” said our presenter in Red Lake, ON.

This tour would not be possible without the generosity of our corporate sponsors: Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, Wawanesa, MacDon and the Winnipeg Airports Authority. We would also like to thank the Manitoba Arts Council for its continued support and all of our hard-working and dedicated presenters and volunteers. “Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries is a longstanding supporter of the performing arts in our province and is honoured to play a role in bringing this classic holiday production into so many communities,” said Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries CEO Peter Hak. In 2017, the Royal MTC regional tour visited the following communities: Atikokan, ON Brandon, MB Crystal City, MB Dauphin, MB Deloraine, MB Dryden, ON Eriksdale, MB Gimli, MB Gretna, MB Kenora, ON Lac du Bonnet, MB MacGregor, MB Minnedosa, MB

MAR 21 – APR 14 “A knockout. Tremendously exciting theater, pulsing with life and sizzling with humor and affection.” — deadline

by STEPHEN KARAM

This season, our Mainstage has offered incredible variety — a period love story, a holiday classic and back-to-back musicals that wowed audiences. Now we’re eager to switch gears with one of the most talked about dramas to hit the stage in recent memory. When The Humans landed on Broadway, it immediately became a sensation, winning four Tony Awards and was named ‘best play of the year’ by at least 10 publications, including the New York Times, Chicago Tribune and Washington Post. Every now and then, a play comes along that reminds us why we go to the theatre. This is one of them.

It’s been scientifically proven that friendship is good for you. (This might depend on your friends!) By providing support and social connection, friends enrich your life and may be a benefit to your health. But friendship, like any other relationship, can be complicated. This is especially true if the people in your social circle are opposites. But we’ve all experienced a friendship that defies explanation; somehow it just works. This is the case with Rose and Di and Viv, three British women who meet in university and develop an unlikely bond that stands the test of time, distance and evolving hairstyles. Round up the girlfriends — or your favourite guy — and join us for this hilarious and heartwarming play.

ACT LIKE A STAR! Everyone at the theatre is part of the show. Yes, even you. You want to be a star, don’t you? These tips will make you a stand-out performer (in a good way)!

Scents and Sensibility

Many theatre lovers experience adverse medical reactions from scented products. Please consider others before using scented products.

Park Your Mobile Device

We know something interesting is happening on social media. It always is. But your neighbours want to watch the play. Please turn off all mobile devices.

The Sound of Silence

Our theatre has great acoustics. So when you’re talking during the show, everyone can hear you. Your neighbours, the ushers and even the actors. We want you to talk about the show but at intermission or after the final bows.

We’re always happy to see you at the theatre. Thank you for coming!

Live theatre requires a lot of commitment, creativity and simple hard work. And it comes at an expense. Did you know your ticket price only covers 50% of the cost of production? That a single light bulb or sheet of plywood costs $25? That a single yard of fabric can cost $100? In order to keep ticket prices affordable and accessible to everyone, Royal MTC depends on the generosity of people like you.
