IMAGINATION TAKES US EVERYWHERE Proud to support the imaginative talent in our creative and cultural arts community.
MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR In the hands of a playwright, homes can be havens of inclusiveness or arenas for epic battles or in the case of The Humans and Di and Viv and Rose — they can become confessionals, places of disquieting truths and unexpected absolutions. Playwright Stephen Karam understands how a home can both reflect and affect its inhabitants. The odd two-storey apartment that Brigid and Richard have rented in Manhattan’s Chinatown features dodgy electrics, strange noises, and the possibility of less tangible faultlines running Steven Schipper
through its walls. Even though the young couple is still unpacking, they’ve invited their family for
Thanksgiving. Like every family, this one has issues, and an evening in this unsettling (and unsettled) apartment will churn them all up. Will all that is hidden be revealed and, if so, will love prevail? At the Warehouse, Amelia Bulmore takes us into a Manchester house where three university students — Di and Viv and Rose — decide to live together the way students did in the 80s and maybe still do today. The athlete, the academic, and the sexual adventurer find temporary common ground in music and in a mutual fascination with each other’s profound differences. After graduation, they struggle to sustain their relationship despite the fissures caused by time and distance. Both plays remind us that we love our friends and family not because of our similarities, but doggedly, despite our differences. In fact, those differences are our greatest collective strength: passion needs reason, faith needs imagination, courage needs kindness. Karam and Bullmore advocate here for something more profound than mere tolerance: they celebrate love, forgiveness, and the whole-hearted embrace of all that makes us human. Yours always,

TRANSIT OF VENUS BY MAUREEN HUNTER
We take for granted that there is a thriving Manitoba playwriting community but forty years ago, despite exceptions, it seemed a distant possibility. Yet, a decade later a whole generation of playwrights — supported by local theatres, independent productions, and the creation of the Fringe — was flourishing. It was an exciting time. The list is long of those who emerged as the eighties ended and the nineties began. Rick Chafe, Brian Drader, Bill Horrocks, Wendy Lill, Bruce McManus, Yvette Nolan, Harry Rintoul, Ian Ross, Alf Silver, Vern Thiessen, and many others came of theatrical age.
and then at the Manitoba Theatre Centre, an providential match for both the playwright and the theatre. Her early plays, including her first hit, Footprints on the Moon, were produced by Agassiz Theatre, but beginning with a thriller, Beautiful Lake Winnipeg, in 1988, most of her plays premiered at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, including what she has announced is her final play, Sarah Ballenden in 2017.
19
Of that generation, Maureen Hunter is a good example of how a close relationship between an artist and a nurturing theatre spurs the growth of the artist and deepens the theatre’s commitment to new work. A playwright, finally, needs a home theatre. Hunter found it first at the long-gone Agassiz Theatre,
Maureen Hunter has taken the most restless journey of any of her generation when it came to the setting, place, and time of her plays. From Prairie realism to an array of historical dramas, Hunter has roamed from the local to the exotic in her work. At the heart of each was the story of the individual seeking love, and losing it, as much as finding it. Among these works was Transit of Venus in 1992, the first play by a Manitoban to be produced on the MTC Mainstage in 25 years. An intimate romantic drama set in 18th-century France, Transit of Venus is about astronomer Guillaume Le Gentil’s desire to track the movement of Venus across the face of the sun. It is really a play about how love can transit from one heart to another, as Le Gentil discovers to his regret. As Maureen wrote to this author: “I often wonder how differently my life

would have gone without Transit of Venus, and especially a Mainstage launch like the one it was given. I’ll be forever grateful to this theatre and everyone involved for the support I’ve been given over the years.”

Transit of Venus, like its protagonist, had its own long journey, being presented as MTC’s regional tour of Manitoba in 1996, performed across Canada by theatres large and small, internationally by the Royal Shakespeare Company, the BBC, and even transformed into an opera in 2007. Three more world premieres of Maureen Hunter plays followed at Royal MTC, including her farewell to the stage, Sarah Ballenden. That farewell is not an abandonment but a considered retirement, a graceful exit. Her work lives, as shown, for example, by the recent revival of Footprints on the Moon at the Finborough Theatre in London, England.

THE HUMANS
Why do we dream? Dreams play a key role in The Humans, providing insight to life-changing events. As the Blake family faces challenges, strange and unusual dreams give food for thought, as they adapt to this turning point in their lives.
example, studies have shown that those who did not dream, experienced anxiety, weight gain, depression and increased tension. Dream researchers suggest dreams exist to process emotions, help solve problems and recall memories.
Although extensive research has been done as to why we dream, many theories have emerged with not one concrete reason. Some researchers say dreams are the result of the sleeping brain during REM sleep. REM sleep happens 90 minutes after you fall asleep, with the first portion lasting 10 minutes. Since the brain is typically more active during this phase, intense dreams are most likely to happen.
Other theories include dreams as a form of consciousness which unite the past, present and future. Information from these moments in time come together and blend into one, reflecting the experiences of waking life.
Experts say dreams are simply thoughts and images that have no purpose or meaning, while others say that they are necessary for optimal health. For

There are six basic fears, of which every human suffers at one time or another... the fear of poverty the fear of criticism the fear of ill health the fear of loss of love of someone the fear of old age and the fear of death. – NAPOLEON HILL, THINK AND GROW RICH
Peppermint Pig Tradition The tradition of the famous Peppermint Pig™ started in the 1880s with candy makers in Saratoga Springs, NY. It’s a festive way to celebrate the holidays, and the tradition is even more popular today than when it was originally released. In Victorian culture, the pig represented good health, happiness and prosperity. Inspired by this symbol, old-fashioned candy makers in Saratoga started to create Peppermint Pigs™ each year during the holiday season. These sweet treats were made of hard peppermint
candy — similar in taste and texture to a candy cane — and appropriately coloured a very festive pink. When families gathered together for holiday meals, the tradition was to break the Peppermint Pig™ after dinner (inside a small cloth pouch) using a miniature hammer. All family members would then share in eating the sweet candy pieces, hoping for good fortune in the coming year. SOURCE: SARATOGA.COM
SYNOPSIS Mom and Dad have ventured from the suburbs to Brigid’s New York duplex for Thanksgiving. Grandma’s barely coherent. Mom’s insecure and overwrought. Dad has something to hide. But if the family has cracks in it, the foundation is solid. As the booze flows, nothing is off limits. And when secrets gradually come to light, this wonderfully messed-up family is heartbreakingly relatable as they mirror us all in our imperfect — but perfectly human — glory. march/april 2018

America the Anxious by Ruth Whippman. Are you happy? Right now? Could you be happier if you tried harder? Although Americans spend more time and money in search of happiness than any other nation on earth, research shows that the United States is one of the least contented, most anxious countries in the developed world. British immigrant Whippman set out to get to the bottom of this contradiction. 306.0973 WHIPPMAN 2016 The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen. As Alfred and Enid Lambert gather with their three adult children for “one last Christmas,” Alfred’s Parkinson’s disease is progressing and the USA is on the verge of a financial crisis. This sprawling family saga touches on some of the same themes as The Humans: economic uncertainty, the conflicts between parents and their drifting children and the issues of an empire in decline. FICTION FRA Poet in New York by Federico García Lorca. Written during the nine months Lorca spent in New York at the very beginning of the Great Depression, this influential collection portrays a city populated with poverty, racism, social turbulence and solitude. Broken Harbour by Tana French. On one of the half-abandoned “luxury” developments that litter Ireland, two children and their father are dead and the mother 22
is on her way to intensive care. At first, it seems like a simple case: Pat Spain was a casualty of the recession, so he killed his children, tried to kill his wife and finished off with himself. But too many details can’t be explained. FICTION MYST FRENCH Get Out. A young black man meets his white girlfriend’s parents for the first time at their secluded estate. At first, her family’s overly accommodating behaviour seems like a nervous attempt to deal with an interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries leads to a nightmare he could never have imagined. Leaving Home by David French. The story of the Mercers, a Newfoundland family who move to Toronto for a better life. Family tensions erupt in the midst of preparations for their second son’s wedding when the elder son announces he is moving out as well. Brilliantly blending comedy and tragedy, this important realist play is now considered a classic Canadian work. 819.245 FRE 2009 The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams. This intensely autobiographical play dramatizes the story of a family whose lives form a triangle of quiet desperation: Amanda, who dreams of restoring her lost past by finding a gentleman caller for her fragile daughter Laura, and Tom, who longs to escape from the responsibility of supporting his mother and sister. 812.54 WIL

DI AND VIV AND ROSE
DIRECTOR’S NOTES BY HEIDI MALAZDREWICH
This play celebrates friendship. I read on a pillow somewhere, “Our friends are the family we choose.” It seems to be a simple statement. So simple that it can fit on a pillow and be sold in gift shops. But when I think about my long-held friendships, those relationships are anything but simple. They are messy and heartbreaking at times and silly and joyful at others. My old friends are the people I call in the lowest moments of my life and the first people I want to speak with when I have good news. They are people who have witnessed my life in all of its intricacies: triumphs, terrors and fumbles. They are the keepers of my secrets, audience
to my jokes and engaged witness/participants in my heartache and joy. Friendships are not necessarily ‘easy’. In order to maintain these life-long connections with our chosen families we must be open and vulnerable, both giving and receiving and that can be hard. It can be costly to expose one’s soul to another and in turn to openly embrace another’s humanity. At times this bond can feel too much to bear. Like any relationship friendships can be nurturing, and joyful and they can be really hard work. But I think it is in this process of messy, hard, vulnerable work that we can find rooting. Through the risk of being seen in all of our quirky, neurotic individualism we may reap the benefits of support and really being known. Amelia Bullmore’s script explores these roots of platonic love. With her three heroines, we get to experience in detail the tumultuousness and tenderness of longterm friendship. We watch Di and Viv and Rose grow up (and their friendship evolves along with them). This is a story that exposes the bravery of friendship and the courage it takes to allow ourselves to be seen and to be needed.

Cherissa and Sarah and Charlene share personal stories about the friendships in their lives cherissa (Di) I’m always amazed at the journey friendship has taken in my life. I find myself growing up, having these intense, life-altering moments with people who are often only around for a brief but significant time and shape me in significant ways. I think of them fondly and sometimes mourn their absence. But as I get older, the friends I hold most dear are the rare few who were there from the beginning and then one or two-friend “soul-mates” I’ve met later in life and I wonder how I could’ve lived without all this time! sarah (Viv)

When I moved to Winnipeg from Dauphin where I’m from, I was moving to the big city away from my “little village” (just as Rose does in the play) and away from my family and community. NEXT AT THE JOHN HIRSCH MAINSTAGE
APR 25 – MAY 19 “At our age, funerals are better than singles bars.” — angus Fiona Reid portrayed the Queen with dignity and grace, but audiences know her best when she’s letting loose. A Royal MTC favourite, Fiona has the chops to elicit spontaneous applause mid-scene and we’re thrilled she’s playing Abigail in Carey Crim’s romantic comedy about second chances. She’ll be sparring with another comic master, C. David Johnson (Jitters), who plays Angus. After Abigail and Angus hook up at a funeral, they wake up to a whole new reality. What follows is a roundabout journey of self-discovery that explores the highs and lows of life after 60. No matter what life stage you’re in, we suggest you come for the ride. Because let’s face it, funny is funny at any age. by CAREY CRIM

by SIMON STEPHENS TOM HENDRY WAREHOUSE SEASON SPONSOR

Before you ask, Breaking Bad fans: no, Walter White won’t be making an appearance. But if you love chemistry, you won’t be disappointed. Despite being wildly different and 30 years apart in age, there’s plenty of attraction between Alex and Georgie. As crafted by Tony Award-winning playwright Simon Stephens (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time), Georgie is irresistible but unreliable. Alex is reserved but intriguing. As feelings become real, Georgie asks Alex for a favour that puts her motives into question. Was their original meeting a chance encounter after all?
