MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Lately, almost every play we’ve read about aging seems to revolve around dementia or Alzheimer’s, as if life after 60 narrows to a single colour in the spectrum, or a single note on the scale. We know these diseases are tragic and must be included in our narratives about the trajectory of life. Yet, I also see so many people my age who are not descending into oblivion. In fact, they seem reinvigorated by empty nests and retirement. Not since adolescence have they been so committed to taking risks, living in the moment, and trying yet again to get this life right. Steven Schipper

Carey Crim and Simon Stephens have written

aging characters who are not locked in wards or forgetting their children’s names. Instead, the playwrights take their all-too-aware seniors to the cliff’s edge of change, and then push them over. In Crim’s Morning After Grace, a funeral lends poignancy to a situation right out of a bedroom farce. Her characters may be haunted by the past but they’re willing to make fools of themselves now, by believing against all odds in the perfectibility of the future. Simon Stephens’ play Heisenberg takes a slightly different approach, allowing 75-year-old Alex a new chance at love, only to darken that pleasant prospect. Romance is never without risk, regardless of the lover’s age, but 42-year-old Georgie may be more than Alex bargained for. Georgie brings out the best in him, but she also arouses his suspicion. The fun of Stephens’ play is watching the two find each other, only to worry that they’ll lose each other forever. Both plays seem to say, “Of course, you feel vulnerable. Love isn’t power — it’s surrender.” That’s why it’s called “falling” in love. Whether we’re 17 or 70, we must abandon ourselves a little to love (and life), because careful planning and risk management alone will not bring us happiness. Our time here is brief, and our chances few. Yours always,

THE HISTORY OF MANITOBA

FROM THE BEGINNING OF TIME TO THE PRESENT IN 45 MINUTES BY ROSS MCMILLAN Now there’s a title that seems to promise an impossibility, yet, if we go by the reaction of audiences over the years, it delivers what it promises as much as any play can. The idea originated with Royal MTC Artistic Director Steven Schipper. He envisioned a play about the province’s history that would inspire high school students. Playwright Ross McMillan looked at our colourful, perhaps amazing, history and, with some inspiration from The Simpsons, delivered an entertainment. Ross described “the people who influenced our province, [as] a lightning fast parade of rogues and fools, with a few everyday visionaries thrown in.” From the Big Bang to a highlight reel of our history including the fur trade, the Selkirk settlers, Louis Riel, the 1919 strike, the Panama Canal, the residential schools, and the departure (and return) of the Jets, the play breathlessly tells the story of this place. Its immediate, hard-nosed and balanced view won over 27,068 audience members in the years since it debuted. Back to that word “entertainment.” Today we tend to think of the word as denoting something theatrically light and easy to take. But entertainment 4

actually implies the serious and the comic in a thoughtful way. The History of Manitoba asks complex questions about how we got to where we are in this province and how our present generation must address the legacy we’ve inherited. The approach, as Winnipeg Free Press critic Kevin Prokosh put it several years ago, is ‘fast, furious, fun’ but the theme is the ongoing creation of our disparate community. Its educational value was acclaimed, and it won the 2000 Prix Manitoba Award for Art in Education and Communication. The play’s 2008 revival for Prince Edward (and the inner-city students who joined him) confirmed its continuing impact. Perhaps, unlike most socially relevant plays of any given generation, it will not become just a footnote. What is most interesting about the play is that it challenges the audience in its waggish way, while inviting them to recognize themselves. For example, you can agree or disagree with its contents. You can complain about what’s left out, or what’s left in. But how to resist it? One can’t. What makes The History of Manitoba special is that audiences learn through the quicksilver of the play that real people are behind the facts, or that some event has stirred a response or, most

important, that each person watching it is a part of the Manitoba history celebrated (and mocked) in the play. In any case, one feels confident that the play will surface again, as it did in 2010 with a revival at The Forks for the Cultural Capital of Canada celebrations. We need a jolt now and then, even if for only 45 minutes.

Steven Schipper’s BIG NEWS Do we human beings evolve throughout our lives, or do our spirits calcify, becoming less flexible with each passing day? The question is not a hypothetical one for me. As you probably know by now, I’m preparing to change jobs next May. I’ve been scribbling 10-play seasons in a notebook every day for the past 30 years. After I plan the 2019/20 season, I’ll stop imagining those new seasons, a prospect that fills me with both dread and delight. I’m ready for a future that will be profoundly different than my past, and I can’t wait to see who I become next. Over the decades, you have been my constant inspiration and my steadying hand. I will never forget the trust you placed in me, or the joy I felt in your company. I will say a proper goodbye next spring but, for now, let’s forget leave-taking. We have another glorious year ahead of us, and I want to celebrate every last moment with you. Yours always,

MORNING AF TER GRACE

PLAYWRIGHT’S NOTES BY CAREY CRIM Morning After Grace was a commissioned play from Guy Sanville at The Purple Rose Theatre Company (founded by Jeff Daniels). He asked me to write a comedy for a wonderful actor named Randolph (Randy) Mantooth who had just turned 70. Randy was known (among other things) for playing the virile John Gage on the TV show Emergency. He was still that guy at 70: A man life had blessed and also kicked around, but still that guy. When I picture myself getting older, I know my insides will be relatively the same even as my outsides change. I hope to be a bit wiser, a bit less reactive and surrounded by a tribe of fierce friends and loved ones. I would love a friend like Abigail. Actually,

I have a friend like Abigail and the role was originally written for her. Yet, I also know as we age, the loss of those friends and loved ones becomes part and parcel of it all. So, I knew the play would deal with love and loss and coming to terms with growing older, but I was having trouble finding a comedic way in. One night, while out with my dad, I overheard a 70-something gentleman say to his dinner companions, “Come on, at our age, funerals are better than singles bars.” That sentence got me off and running and then I shamelessly borrowed from friends and family for further inspiration. The first half of the play had the feel of old screwball comedies of the 30s and 40s. Mistaken identities, false assumptions and a battle of the sexes with a twist. As the play progressed, the journey from grief to grace began to deepen. Humour made room for life and life for humour. Comedy and sorrow intertwined. I lost my mother at 17. That loss will remain a part of my “now” forever. This play is for her.

“Come on, at our age, funerals are better than singles bars.” – ANGUS

MORNING AF TER GRACE

DIRECTOR’S NOTES BY KRISTA JACKSON

“I answer the heroic question, ‘Death, where is thy sting?’ with ‘It is in my heart and mind and memories’.” — MAYA ANGELOU

Morning After Grace asks those of us who have yet to experience it to contemplate a life beyond our significant, significant other. Who are we when a filter through whom we’ve lived so much of our social and private — our real — lives is gone? Carey Crim’s tale of three Floridian golden-agers examines how those thousands of thrilling, challenging and — c’mon, let’s be honest — boring hours we spend together with those we have chosen in life have the possibility of bringing us closer together or driving us apart. When we face a future without a life companion — whether by death, decision or divorce — there is grieving, healing and changing to do following our loss.

Now this may all sound pretty grim, but Crim’s comedy manages to shine a light on this time of life. It shows us that what lies beneath is something easy to overlook when it’s just there: that radiant human need for connection and companionship. We are reminded that we all have in us an enormous capacity to surprise ourselves, to stretch beyond our comfort zones when necessary and this need never escape us. We are — despite our stretch marks, despite our wrinkles — never too old to grow, to learn, or to be present in uncomfortable moments that lead us in unexpected directions. But perhaps most importantly, Angus, Ollie and Abigail demonstrate that we often get far more chances to get things right than we think we do. That there is mercy in the universe. And nearly endless patience. And infinite love.

SYNOPSIS After hooking up at a funeral, Abigail and Angus wake up with a new lease on life. Being successful, bright and “of a certain age” doesn’t guarantee you’re ready to take a leap of faith but they’re both tired of faking it. So together with their friend Ollie, Abigail and Angus bravely shed past disappointments in order to find joy again. april/may 2018

HEISENBERG

The Uncertainty principle In Simon Stephens’ Heisenberg, science and love collide. Two unlikely characters, Georgie Burns and Alex Priest, meet and the anticipation of what happens next is just like a chemical reaction. WHO IS HEISENBERG?

The play’s title refers to German physicist and philosopher Werner Heisenberg. In 1925, when he was just 23 years old, Heisenberg discovered a way to formulate quantum mechanics in terms of matrices. Werner Karl Heisenberg was born on December 5, 1901, in Würzburg, Germany. He was the son of August and Annie Wecklein Heisenberg. His father, who was committed to academic learning, encouraged him to pursue science, which he loved. As an eager student he taught himself calculus and even took the challenging task of writing a scientific paper as a teenager. Though science

was his main passion, he was also heavily immersed in music, playing piano at a young age and playing master compositions by the age of 13. He graduated from the University of Munich, where his father was professor of Greek language and literature. In 1932, Heisenberg was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics for the creation of quantum mechanics. Later in life, Heisenberg developed the uncertainty principle, also referred to as the indeterminacy principle. THE UNCERTAINTY PRINCIPLE

“The uncertainty principle says that we cannot measure the position (x) and the momentum (p) of a particle with absolute precision. The more accurately we know one of these values, the less accurately we know the other. Multiplying together the errors in the measurements of these values (the errors are represented by the triangle symbol in front of each property, the Greek letter “delta”) has to give a number greater than or equal to half of a constant called “h-bar”. This is equal to Planck’s constant (usually written as h) divided by 2π. Planck’s constant is an important number in quantum theory, a way to measure the granularity of the world at its smallest scales and it has the value 6.626 x 10-34joule seconds.” — The Guardian Quantum mechanics deals with the behaviour of matter and light on the atomic and subatomic scale. It tries to describe the properties of molecules and atoms and their elements such as electrons, protons, neutrons and other particles like quarks

HEISENBERG and gluons. These properties include the interactions of the particles with one another and with electromagnetic radiation (i.e. light, X-rays and gamma rays). But what do quantum physics and the uncertainty principle have to do with the production? In Heisenberg, Stephens applies the theory that it’s impossible to measure the momentum and direction of a particle

together with absolute precision. Though the differences between Georgie Burns, a 42-year-old woman from New Jersey, and Alex Priest, a 75-year-old butcher, are evident, they both long for love and human connection regardless of their stage in life. Stephens’ exploration of their relationship uses a scientific approach to love, lending credibility to a somewhat improbable love story. “If you watch something closely enough you realise you have no possible way of telling where it’s going or how fast it’s getting there. Did you know that?” – GEORGIE

FIXED PERSONALITIES In Heisenberg, Alex says there’s “no such thing as personalities,” that “they’re never fixed.” But is this true? Personality defines how we connect with the world and isn’t as fixed as you think. According to the “Big Five”, which is the most widely accepted model of personality, there are five traits that shape our behaviour and emotions: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism. So, can we change our personality or is it set in stone? A 16-week study from

the University of Illinois has shown that participants wanting to change parts of their personality were successful. Through attending public speaking classes and self-improvement programs, participants were able to alter their traits. As we mature, we tend to become more understanding, conscientious and develop increased emotional stability. Our goals change, which influences behaviour, and as we evolve we acquire new traits.

SYNOPSIS From their first meeting, something’s a bit off. But maybe that’s what makes them click. A 75-year-old British butcher and a 40-something American? Definitely not a match on paper. As chemistry turns to romance, Georgie asks Alex for a favour that puts her motives into question. Was their original meeting a chance encounter after all? As Alex ponders his next move, the question remains: if you’re getting what you want, does it matter what you give? april/may 2018

program readings and workshops, and review and analyze script submissions.

For 19 years, Investors Group has generously supported our Wordplay program. Their visionary leadership has been a critical factor in our development of new plays. Since Steven Schipper took the helm, Royal MTC has premiered an average of one new play each season, an exciting accomplishment for the company, for the artists who create the work, and for the corporation that funds this artistic exploration.

We recently announced the upcoming world premieres of Sense and Sensibility by Ellen Peterson and The Cottage by Jake MacDonald, plays developed through our Wordplay program. Both playwrights began these projects with commission money from our theatre and, later, we hired dramaturgs Trish Cooper, Don Hannah and Bruce McManus to work with them on the development of the project. Finally, workshop funding helped us hire a total of 56 actors to read various drafts of the plays, so Peterson and MacDonald could assess their progress and plan their next steps.

Wordplay is Royal MTC’s vitally important “R&D” wing, where we can foster new work, and invest in the creation and development of plays for our stages, and for the Canadian theatre canon. We commission new plays, provide dramaturgical support,

Artistic Director Steven Schipper is thrilled to be launching both plays simultaneously: “Each project is irresistible and, thanks to Investors Group, we’re able to support both these playwrights on their creative journeys.” WORDPLAY SPONSOR

Students see every Mainstage production and experience six workshops led by local, professional artists. So far this year, they have delved into the art of the audition, voice and diction, playwriting and musical improvisation. Here are some reactions to their time spent in these areas: “Watching everyone today and seeing how much everyone loves theatre, inspired me.”

“I discovered what my imagination was capable of. I have gained a skill I thought was too difficult to achieve.”

“I love this building and would want to work here.”

“I loved this workshop! It forced me out of my comfort zone and I loved every second of it!”

“I’m learning that I fear failure, which stops me from doing things. This started showing me that you just need to go for it.” “The instructor was so inspiring and full of knowledge!! I didn’t want him to stop talking!”

Q&A WITH ROYAL MTC’S ARCHIVIST

Mary Horodyski Why is there an archivist at Royal MTC? The Royal MTC Foundation granted the theatre’s request for funds to hire me for a three-year part-time contract that ends this September. My work included contributing historical material to our 60th Anniversary displays, updating our agreement with the Archives of Manitoba (AM) and sending them a new shipment of records, managing the digitization of our production photos, and organizing the 20 years of records that we keep onsite. I regularly answer requests for information about our history, and help other departments use our history to promote the theatre. In the months ahead, I’ll create a plan for staff to know which files to send to AM in the future. I also obtained funding from the federal government to hire three Young Canada Works students and I also had help from an intern from McGill University. These students contributed to the online

exhibit celebrating the designs of Brian Perchaluk, digitized thousands of slides and photos, and created finding aids for our archival materials at the Archives of Manitoba. I also have the support of two long-time volunteers, Elsie Douglas and Peggy Barker. They have a fantastic knowledge of the past 60 years of productions and were instrumental in the creation of the beautiful new lobby display of photos in the Mainstage building. Why send the theatre’s records to the Archives of Manitoba? The Archives of Manitoba has storage facilities that are environmentally controlled, a reading room for patrons to view the records, an online search engine, and permanent professional staff to preserve the records and allow researchers and the general public to access records. It is very rare for a theatre company to have the space or resources to properly house their own historical records. Where is the Archives of Manitoba? Who can use the archives?

What records will be available at the Archives of Manitoba? Probably the most interesting records for the general public will be the production photographs and production files. The files show some of the work that goes into preparing a play for the stage, including designing and building the props, costumes and sets. Patrons will also find copies of our programs, posters and annual reports. The AM has a copy of almost every program and poster—the few that are missing are listed on our web page.

Royal MTC to dedicate time and money to the preservation of their history, as they have over the past three years.

Why should theatres archive their records? The stories we see on stage are both a reflection — and shaping agent — of our culture and ideas. Most theatres receive some form of public funding, so I believe they also have a responsibility to archive their records for the benefit of the current public and for future generations. Do most theatres have an archivist? It’s very rare. Theatres don’t normally have the budget to keep an archivist permanently on staff, which is worrisome, as it means that the history of these companies is at risk. This is why individual donations and specialized donation campaigns matter. A theatre’s main focus is on the creation of art, so it takes great vision for an organization like april/may 2018

What training does an archivist need? I have a Master’s degree from the Archival Studies program of the History department of the University of Manitoba. I also have a Master’s degree in History from Concordia University. What are your favourite records? I love the photos of our staff at work. The artistry of theatre craftspeople and technicians is something to be celebrated and I’m glad the public will be able to see some of this in our records at the AM. You can also see images and artefacts in the lobby display at the Warehouse and on our website. Mary Horodyski. PHOTO BY LAURIE TODD Header background. PAINTING BY JOHN HIRSCH, ARCHIVES OF MANITOBA

LEGACY GIVING

Last year at this time, Royal MTC launched an ambitious campaign to sign on 60 members to Royal MTC’s Founders’ Circle before the end our 60th season on May 31, 2018. With only 25 members in the Founders’ Circle at the start, the goal was to more than double that number in a single season. Well, the 60th season is nearing the end, and Royal MTC is thrilled to announce that we now have 53 members in our Founders’ Circle. Thanks to all of you who have already become members. Your commitment is a powerful way to ensure the future success of Royal MTC.

Bequests are directed to the Endowment Fund, providing long-term financial stability for this theatre. All donations to the Endowment Fund, including legacy gifts, are eligible for matching grants, increasing the impact of your donation. And donors who make a legacy gift to Royal MTC’s Endowment Fund are automatically included in The Winnipeg Foundation’s Legacy unless you advise otherwise. The Endowment Fund was established in 2001 and is held in trust by The Winnipeg Foundation. The income from that fund currently provides the theatre over $850,000 in financial support every season. Becoming a member of the Founders’ Circle is your opportunity to make a real difference in the future of Royal MTC. When you make a legacy gift, it will last forever.

WE ARE NOW SO CLOSE TO OUR GOAL! WILL YOU JOIN US? Would you help us meet our goal by becoming one of our first 60 members? There is no need for you to change your will immediately. You can become a Founders’ Circle member simply by

THANKS TO OUR VOLUNTEERS!

FINAL BOW The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre honours the passing of those dear to our theatre – people who’ve made a lasting contribution to this ephemeral art form. Dwight Griffin Dwight Griffin began his career at MTC in 1969 as a Stage Manager before accepting the position of Production Manager in 1976. In all, he worked at the theatre for over a decade alongside his wife Cheryl Griffin, Properties Co-ordinator. Griffin travelled east in 1980 to serve as Production Manager at the Stratford Festival until 1986, as company manager for productions of Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King and The Producers in Toronto, and finally as a teacher to the next generation of theatre artists at Dalhousie University. Linda Beech, Set & Costume Designer for Heisenberg, was one of Griffin’s students. “Theatre can be a crazy business and Dwight helped show me how to remain balanced,” she said. “The secret, of course, was to be like Dwight ... smart, tough, funny (sooo funny), irreverent and caring.” Donnelly Rhodes Actor Donnelly Rhodes, son of Manitoba playwright Ann Henry (Lulu Street), began his stage career at MTC under the mentorship of founder John Hirsch. Rhodes worked as a Stage Manager and actor with the company from 1958 to 1960, when MTC awarded him a scholarship to join the first class at the National Theatre School of Canada. He returned a few more times to the MTC stage before becoming a fixture of stage and screen april/may 2018

in Canada and the United States. Over the next 60 years, Rhodes starred on such popular TV shows as The Young and the Restless, Soap and Da Vinci’s Inquest. His Battlestar Galactica co-star Aaron Douglas joked that “his ability to tell a story and make you laugh was only matched by his ability to light and smoke a dart in literally any weather conditions.” Allan H. Waisman As one of the partners at Number TEN Architectural Group, Allan H. Waisman led the design team that created our Mainstage Theatre. Waisman said he began the project with only one guideline: “a suggestion from the Board that ‘a proscenium type of stage’ might be useful.” According to Time Magazine, in the early stages, Waisman’s firm built 30 models of the auditorium in 30 days in order to pinpoint the design concept. When the theatre opened on November 2, 1970, Waisman described that “ultimately, our whole approach was based on the belief that the Manitoba Theatre Centre would always be a changing concept and an on-going idea which would develop new shapes and directions in the years ahead.” In 2009 the theatre was designated a National Historic Site. In the 1970s, Waisman moved to Vancouver, where he received architectural awards for projects such as the Vancouver Airport expansion and Whistler Town Centre. Griffin in his MTC office.
