Enchants the senses
Proud to celebrate the sights & sounds of Winnipeg’s creative community.
MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Have you been looking at the sky this fall, the distant honks drawing your gaze up to the dark vees of geese? How easily they seem to migrate. No moving van. No garage sale. No padlocked POD on the driveway. Just a frenzy of feathers as they lift off, and then the long flight toward the horizon. We humans put down roots that can run generations deep, and uprooting ourselves can threaten our identity or even our survival. When Jane Austen’s Dashwood sisters are forced to leave their large home for a distant cottage, they feel Steven Schipper
betrayed and alone. The people and places that have surrounded them since birth are torn away,
and they struggle to forge new attachments amid their straitened circumstances. Marriage seems the only hope for recovering their former comforts, even while their romantic ideals and genteel poverty limit their prospects. Of course, their situation could be worse. They could be fleeing their country, like the characters in Vietgone, who narrowly escape 1970s Vietnam with their lives. To leave behind one’s family and possessions, learn a new language and adopt a new culture requires a courage far beyond anything Elinor and Marianne Dashwood could imagine. Yet the characters in Vietgone bring a sassy, sexy bravado to their Arkansas refugee camp, in Qui Nguyen’s imaginative, hip-hop, kung-fu take on his parents’ unlikely courtship. Will love feather their new nest, and give purpose to their struggles? As it turns out, geese struggle too. Scientists have found high levels of stress hormones in Canada geese during and after migration. The great upheaval is a physical and emotional strain, as it is for us, but they find consolation, as we do, in a mate and offspring, in a perfect landing or a lawn well-grazed. And how they must love the annual return to the place of their birth, the familiar sight of sky and shore, the scented memories of youth. Perhaps we are made up of all the places we have called home. If so, we hope this theatre is one of those homes for you, and that our seasons draw you back again each year. Yours always,

SENSE AND SENSIBILITY
JANE AUST EN Born on December 16, 1775 in Steventon, Hampshire, England, writer Jane Austen is best known for her novels Pride and Prejudice and Emma which have become literary classics. She is known as one of the best writers in English history. Her enduring popularity is evident in the many film and TV adaptations of her work. The seventh of eight children and the daughter of an Oxford-educated rector for an Anglican Parish, Jane and her siblings were encouraged to read from their father’s extensive library. As young children, they began writing books as well as putting on plays and charades. Prejudice, Mansfield Park and Emma, all under a pseudonym.
As one of only two girls in her family, Jane was close to her older sister Cassandra, with whom she would later collaborate. At a young age, Jane was fascinated by writing and would write stories in bound notebooks. During her adolescence in the 1790s, she began writing Love and Friendship, a story based on a series of love letters and a parody of romantic fiction. The following year, she wrote The History of England and included illustrations by Cassandra. Her love for writing continued to grow as she read her works to her family every night. It was not until she was in her 30s that she began to anonymously publish her works. From 1811-1816 she published Sense and Sensibility, Pride and 6
Jane Austen wrote the first draft of her first major novel, Sense and Sensibility, in 1795. Initially, it was titled Elinor and Marianne whose main characters are sisters. The story was rewritten in 1797 and published in 1811 with the title Sense and Sensibility. LOVE LIFE
Jane Austen’s stories focused on love and romance, but she was quite private about her own love life. She lived during the Regency period when it was rare for a woman to live her entire life without getting married. Though she dated, she never walked down the aisle, and passed away at the age of 41.

SENSE AND SENSIBILITY Austen had a romance with Irish politician Thomas Langlois Lefroy, but nothing came of it. It is said that money was a factor in whether she’d marry or not as she saw it is as one of the benefits of marriage, but Lefroy just didn’t have the financial security she was looking for. In 1880, Austen’s family moved to Bath, Somerset, England where she fell in love. Unfortunately, this mystery man passed away before they could marry. Even though she didn’t wed, she came close. In 1802, Austen was engaged for a day to Harris Bigg-Wither, but after a sleepless night she broke off the engagement and fled his estate. Jane’s sister Cassandra also did not marry. WHY JANE IS STILL TRENDING TODAY
Jane’s stories remain relevant today and are filled with wit, wisdom and humour that stand the test of time. Fan clubs, book clubs, exhibitions, workshops, performances and writing competitions are held worldwide to celebrate and honour Jane’s remarkable storytelling. She portrayed women in a way that hadn’t been done before. She created characters who were believable and relatable. Most of her main characters, though flawed, cared about being good people. She reminded us that we can change for the better and that we too can be the heroines and heroes of our own stories.
Local playwright, actor, dramaturg and teacher Ellen Peterson has been at work on her adaptation of Sense and Sensibility for just over two years. Research, consultations with dramaturgs, collaboration with the director and designer, and workshop readings have been ongoing throughout the process of bringing Austen’s classic novel to life. For Ellen, this story is anything but a simple romance. It highlights the relationship between the Dashwood sisters, who are close despite their differences. The love story is played out against the hard economic realities and rigid class system of the Regency Era. At the end of the novel, no one ends up with an unrealistic “happily ever after.” Life is never perfect, and seldom easy. Characters are often selfish or foolish, and just as often truly noble. Ellen brings these qualities forward with compassion and wit in a sophisticated play that touches on themes of love for one’s family, loyalty, forgiveness, the perils of romantic love, and the necessary balance we must all strike between what our heads tell us, and what our hearts desire. Can we have what we want and what we need at the same time? Ellen’s plays have been produced by Theatre Projects Manitoba, Prairie Theatre Exchange and at the Fringe. Several short works have been anthologized. She is a dramaturg, and teaches acting, playwriting and creative writing.

NOV 20 – DEC 15 With our next production, it’ll almost feel like we’re seeing two shows at once. On one hand, we’ll be transported to Bedford Falls where noble George Bailey finds himself at a crossroads on Christmas Eve. And we’ll also experience the joy of watching an old-time radio show being created in front of our eyes. Robb Paterson, who directed our production 10 years ago, takes the stage as the angel Clarence. He’ll be joined by a multi-talented cast who will bring this memorable story to life during the golden age of radio. Also returning to the show are Foley artist John Gzowski and musician Danny Carroll, who team up with the actors to create a soundscape of live effects, music and old-time jingles. We invite you to gather the people from your wonderful life and celebrate the season together at the theatre! Mairi Babb, Mike Shara and Lisa Anne Durupt in It's a Wonderful Life: A Radio Play, 2009. A GRAND HUZZAH* TO OUR DONORS! During Sense and Sensibility’s Regency Period, theatre tickets only partially covered the cost of production. Theatres were highly dependent on the support of financial backers in order to remain afloat. Much has changed since that time, but one thing has not – ticket prices still fall short of covering production costs, and we continue to depend on the generous support of theatre lovers like you to donate. In appreciation of this support, you’ll have many opportunities to enhance your theatre experience during the season. As a donor, you’ll be offered unique opportunities to explore behind the scenes and connect with the actors and artists who create the worlds you see onstage.
• Director’s Circle Home Event for donors of $2000 or more Giving is made even easier through our monthly giving program. It’s an easy way to deepen your support. THE MOMENT WE’RE IN BY DAVID YEE, FU-GEN THEATRE, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
We’re experiencing a moment. Right now, in Canadian theatre, sort of unbeknownst to anyone, we’re experiencing something profound. In a country whose national stages have produced very little work (if any) of note by Vietnamese North American playwrights, this season alone there are five. Five. Vietgone by Qui Nguyen, A Perfect Bowl of Pho by Nam Nguyen, Fine China by Julie Phan, Good Morning Viet Mom by Franco Nguyen, and Ga Ting by Minh Ly. Five plays… three of them by totally unrelated guys named “Nguyen.” When we founded fu-GEN in 2002, there was no home for Asian Canadian theatre in Canada. There was no dedicated company to bring stories of the East Asian diaspora to the stage. Yet, in the just over 15 years that we’ve been producing theatre, we have never produced a work that came from or spoke of a Vietnamese subjectivity until now. We’ve seeded and developed some work and artists, but have never seen any through to a full mainstage production. For some reason, Canadians seem to believe that the Vietnam War and subsequent effects were the cultural property of the United States. When you look at movies
like Apocalypse Now, Good Morning, Vietnam, Platoon, etc. it’s easy to see how one could reach that conclusion. The Vietnam War in all its reminiscence seems, largely, an American cultural export. That isn’t unearned, American involvement in the war itself was a high stakes affair. But the refugee crisis inextricably associated with that war wasn’t. The Vietnamese people displaced by the war landed on many shores, and Canada was a leader in resettlement efforts. Between 1975 and 1976, directly following the fall of Saigon, we took in 5,600 political refugees. From 1979 to 1982, we resettled 60,000 displaced people, 10,000 more than our original commitment when resettlement started. Those refugees weren’t settled solely by government programs, over half of those placements were (much like our most recent Syrian refugee crisis) organized and implemented by

VIETGONE private citizens: community groups, families, charitable and religious organizations, not-for-profits. In 1986, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees awarded the Nansen Medal to Canada in recognition of its “outstanding service to the cause of refugees, displaced or stateless people”. It was awarded “to the people of Canada”, and remains the only time in history this honour has been bestowed upon an entire nation. Vietgone is an important play, and it comes at an important time. These are dark days; compassion is under attack, walls are the dominant metaphor and the word “haven” doesn’t mean what it used to. It’s essential, in these times, to raise the voices of those who have historically been silent. To remember that the strength of our nation lies in our diversity, our collective capacity to survive and tell stories of that survival. Vietgone (and the four other plays from a Vietnamese subjectivity) represents a voice that has been missing from our stages, a narrative that has been lost in the shuffle; outweighed and subjugated by dominant cultures, even within our own diaspora. I don’t know what it means, if I’m honest, that there are suddenly five production-ready plays where before there were none. It happened as instantly and unexpectedly as any movement, I suppose. If it’s not your business to know the sector, I doubt you’d even notice. But that’s why we’re here, it’s why we come to the theatre: to notice. To pay attention. To open our eyes to that which we might have missed otherwise. To hear the unexpected voice. To see something important. Momentous, even.
DID YOU KNOW? The Vietnam War began on November 1, 1955 and ended with the fall of Saigon April 30, 1975, lasting 19 and a half years. The Vietnam War took place in several locations including, South Vietnam, North Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. The Vietnam War was the longest in US history until the Afghanistan War (2002-2014). In 1975, more than 100,000 Vietnamese refugees fled to the United States after the fall of Saigon. Canada accepted more than 60,000 refugees. 8,744,000 is the total number of US troops that served worldwide during Vietnam. Many Vietnamese immigrants migrating to Canada spoke French or English as a second language. SOURCES: HISTORYNET.COM, THECANADIANENCYCLOPEDIA.CA

He ends up in a refugee camp in Arkansas, where he vows to return for his loved ones. Also landing at the camp is Tong, a strong-willed beauty. The attraction between Quang and Tong is immediate but the pull of home is strong for him and she’s determined to make it work in America. Agatha Christie’s suspenseful thriller Witness for the Prosecution kept audiences guessing until the very end, with 15 Manitoba Bar Association members serving up shocking testimony, impassioned outbursts and a surprising twist. The Tom Hendry Warehouse was buzzing from May 9 to 12 for the Lawyers Play — a fundraiser in support of the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre. Celebrating its 26th production, the Royal MTC/MBA Lawyers Play is a vital fundraising event for the theatre and has raised more than $1 million since 1990! We wish to thank our patrons, donors, advertisers and sponsors for supporting our efforts to offer extraordinary theatre at accessible prices to all Manitobans. Royal MTC would also like to extend sincere thanks to the talented cast and hardworking crew, as well as our many volunteers and committee members.
