IMAGINATION TAKES US EVERYWHERE Proud to support the imaginative talent in our creative and cultural arts community.
MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR A man just walked by me in a kangaroo costume with a baby roo in his pouch. He didn’t seem to notice the vampires trailing him, blood drying on their cheeks, or Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz stopping to rebuckle one spangly red shoe. Halloween has exhumed the subconscious of an entire city, yet all I can think about is Christmas. In case you’ve somehow missed seeing our 2009 production or the iconic Frank Capra film on which it was based, It’s a Wonderful Life is set on Christmas Eve. Philip Grecian’s stage adaptation Steven Schipper
takes us behind the illusion of reality, into a studio full of actors in street clothes. The artists have
been hired to perform a radio play, but they can’t help getting caught up in their roles, just as we forget we’re watching a play within a play. We care only that George Bailey has sacrificed his own dreams to make the town of Bedford Falls a better place, and now this decent man is in danger. The demons threatening George aren’t the red-horned kind who’ll ring my doorbell tonight. Our story’s demons are greed and bureaucracy, and they don’t care that it’s Christmas Eve. Peace on earth isn’t in their job descriptions, but it is in ours. Winnipeg is our Bedford Falls, and our theatre exists (like Clarence) to remind us of our shared humanity. Theatre may not always be an angel, but it is touched by the divine, and helps make of this earth a heaven. Yours always,

Radio Theatre A RICH LOCAL HISTORY BY GARRY MOIR Radio has often been described as “theatre of the mind.” A listener’s imagination can picture whatever it wishes when hearing a sound that has travelled the airwaves. Slowly crunching and twisting a paper bag can create the illusion of a crackling fireplace. Add the sound of a cork popping, water poured on water, two glasses clinking and one has the perfect romantic setting…all in front of a microphone. Radio theatre in Manitoba has a long and rich history dating back to the early 1920s. The first radio stations in Winnipeg were owned and operated by the Winnipeg Free Press and Winnipeg Tribune. Unable to make a go of it, the newspapers sold their broadcasting outlets to the government-owned Manitoba Telephone System which established its own station in 1923, known as CKY. It was the first publicly-owned radio station in Canada. During those early years, radio was very much an experiment. Entertainers, be they singers, actors or musicians, were 6
welcomed as long as they were prepared to work without pay. From the beginning, homemade sound effects such as chimes and bird calls were used to differentiate one station from the other. One enterprising professor from the Manitoba Agricultural College went so far as to bring in a box of chirping baby chicks which he placed beside the microphone while giving a lecture on poultry. Writing in 1937, CKY’s first manager, Darby Coats, recalled that “within weeks of its official opening CKY explored some new territory….with the first serious attempts to adapt stage plays for microphone presentation.” At first homemade sound effects were used, but before long the station added a new level of sophistication. In all likelihood, CKY was the first radio station in the country to use pre-produced sound effects which were recorded on wax cylinders and then played on a clock-work phonograph under the voice of the actor. At roughly the same time, the Canadian National Railway decided to install

IT ’S A WONDERFUL LIFE: THE RADIO PLAY radios on its passenger trains and set up studios in major cities to provide programming. The Winnipeg studio was located in the Fort Garry Hotel. The railway made a significant investment in radio drama, commissioning a series of historical plays titled The Romance of Canada. British stage director Tyrone Guthrie (a founding member of the Stratford Festival) was brought in to oversee the production. Among the stories told was that of the arrival of the Selkirk settlers in the Red River Colony. By the 1930s there was no shortage of radio plays for audiences to listen to. CKY and a new private station, CJRC, were both airing weekly dramas with most of the on-air talent coming from the Winnipeg Little Theatre*. American radio was also very popular, offering a plethora of mystery, comedy, science fiction and western programs. Lux Radio Theatre featured adaptations of Broadway shows and movies for radio. It’s a Wonderful Life aired in 1947. Not that everyone was impressed with radio theatre. There were those in the acting community who questioned whether radio was a true form of the craft. CKY even ran a debate on the topic “Is Radio Real Theatre?” There were listeners who complained about the content of certain productions. “I wish you wouldn’t run so many dramas with weeping women, frivolous daughters, wayward sons and so forth,” wrote one Winnipeg listener to CKY. “Surely there is enough trouble in our lives without filling our homes with stories of more misery.” The formation of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in 1936 launched the golden age of radio drama in Canada. While private radio stations november/december 2018
had been providing some local drama and comedy, actors and directors suddenly found a whole new source of revenue working in radio. Over a span of three decades, CBC produced countless radio plays. CBC Winnipeg had its own drama department. Notables such as John Hirsch (co-founder of MTC), Tom Hendry (co-founder of MTC), Gordon Pinsent, George Waight, Beth Lockerbie, Esse Ljungh, Tommy Tweed and others moved back and forth freely between the stage and radio. Ljungh would go on to become National Supervisor of Drama for CBC. A unique aspect of radio theatre was its ability to draw a crowd. While produced for a listening audience, it was not uncommon for people to flock to a local radio station to watch a program being produced. A former CBC staffer once recalled “people showing up every day – up to a 100 sometimes” just to watch the production of a noon-hour soap opera. The theatre of the mind has deep roots in the theatrical community. It’s hardly surprising then that old-time radio produced on stage remains a very popular attraction. Garry Moir has spent over 45 years in the broadcasting industry. His career includes work at CBC as well as several private radio and television stations. He has written extensively about local broadcasting history, including a book titled “On the Air: The Golden Age of Radio in Manitoba”. Garry currently is a part-time newscaster and produces the daily “history vault” at CJNU Radio, 93.7 FM. *Winnipeg Little Theatre merged with Theatre 77 (co-founded by John Hirsch and Tom Hendry) to become MTC.

IT ’S A WONDERFUL LIFE: THE RADIO PLAY
The Foley Artist
BY JOHN GZOWSKI, SOUND DESIGNER / FOLEY ARTIST There are days when I have to ask myself ‘how is it that I’m being paid to slam doors, break celery, stomp my feet and knock things over on stage’. I mean I love it, but it’s ridiculous that I spend days looking through junk shops for squeaky things, for rusty hinges, old horns and generally rubbing, bumping and knocking things around to see if they sound like the sound I’ve got in my head for an effect. Who’s to blame? Well, we could start with Jack Foley. He’s the one who started doing sound effects for film and had an industry named after him. Of course, theatre crews have been making sound effects in the backs of theatres for centuries before, but the techniques for film really started with Jack Foley. When the talkies came around and sound was added, people realized you kind of needed to fill out the sound with some effects as well. Cue the Foley artist, who would take the film and add in all the sounds that bring the actions to life. Back in the day it all had to be done in one pass and one take and they’d rehearse a team of Foley artists for a day to do a tough sequence. On YouTube, if you’re interested, there’s a great Disney piece called The Reluctant Dragon that has an amazing Foley/music performance sequence. For those old-time radio shows, like the one we’re replicating for you in It’s a Wonderful Life: The Radio Play, it would have been similar. Usually a small team of Foley artists (or sound effects technicians as an 84-year-old ex-CBC Foley artist told me after he came to see a show once) would get the script, 8
figure out the effects they needed to or could do, pull the junk out and rehearse for the show. These days Foley artists mostly work in film. Sadly, CBC isn’t doing radio drama much anymore and neither is anyone else. Modern film Foley artists create those specific sound effects that are too slow and tedious to be done with a sound effects library, like footsteps, cloth movement, fights and body actions. I got a bit of help from the guys who run Footsteps, an Ontario-based Foley studio out in a rural house with a small studio and a massive supply of junk, walking surfaces, old bits of cars, doors and shoes of every kind. There they create full sonic worlds one sound at a time, layering in multiple tracks of sounds to create the sonic picture. For this production, we’re doing it old school. For the most part this is what they did in the day. These are the ways they made almost all of these sounds, though there are a few exceptions. They did use turntables and records for some sounds, like street ambiences and car sounds. Do me the favour of closing your eyes a few times and seeing how much of the action you can visualize from the sounds. I’m trying to recreate as many sounds as I can live, so I’m using old sewing machines that have been tinkered with to be extra noisy to replicate the old jalopy and cab for this show. The script calls for four Foley artists as well, but it’s more fun to try and do them all, so forgive me if I don’t get to them all, but enjoy the ride.

IT ’S A WONDERFUL LIFE: THE RADIO PLAY Frank Capra
Philip Grecian
Filmmaker
Playwright
Frank Capra (1897-1991) was a multiple Academy Award-winning film director who is best known for movies like Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936), You Can’t Take It with You (1938), Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) and, perhaps most notably, It’s a Wonderful Life (1946). Starring Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed and Lionel Barrymore, It’s a Wonderful Life was considered a box office disappointment at the time of its release due to high production costs and stiff competition. Despite its poor commercial success, the film was nominated for five Academy Awards. The intense popularity of It’s a Wonderful Life came later, however, as it became a staple of Christmas television around the globe and was named one of the best films ever made by the American Film Institute. This came as a welcome surprise to Frank Capra, who told the Wall Street Journal in 1984: “It’s the damnedest thing I’ve ever seen. The film has a life of its own now and I can look at it like I had nothing to do with it. I’m like a parent whose kid grows up to be president.”
Philip Grecian’s full stage adaptation of It’s a Wonderful Life has been produced multiple times by North American theatre companies, while the staged radio version has been broadcast on radio and television, and continues to be produced in theatres throughout the United States and Canada. His stage adaptation of A Christmas Story has had well over 1,000 productions, both professional and amateur, and his adaptation of A Christmas Carol has been on the boards for 40 years. Other works include The Dragon of Nitt and The Lion and the Lyre (both translated and performed in Russia); the stage production of In His Steps, a drama; Little Pills, a farce; Toby Saves the Farm, a musical salute to tent shows; and a translation of Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute. In addition to It’s a Wonderful Life, Grecian’s staged and televised radio dramas include Dracula (Emmy winner), Twisted Tales of Poe, A Christmas Carol, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Blood Countess, Frankenstein, The Invisible Man and others.
WARM WEAR DONATION DRIVE In the spirit of giving, Royal MTC is calling for donations of new or gently used scarves, toques and gloves/mittens to give to our community members who need them this cold winter season. During the run of It’s a Wonderful Life, we’ll be dressing up John and Tom in donated outerwear so people can simply help themselves. We’ll be accepting donations at the Box Office. Thank you for your warm-hearted generosity! For a complete list of theatre abbreviations, please refer to legend on page 4

“…wise, wicked, glorious fun…” — time out london One of the biggest stars of the season is a pintsized genius. Bighearted and smart as a whip, Matilda never gives up as she strives to fulfill her potential. Forever outsmarting her parents (which, frankly, isn’t too hard) and the mean-spirited Miss Trunchbull, Matilda uses her gifts to lift up those around her. This includes theatre-goers worldwide – seven million and counting! Roald Dahl’s tribute to the underdog has won more than 85 awards, including 16 for Best Musical. “I wouldn’t dream of crossing you.” — nora
by HENRIK IBSEN translated by JOAN TINDALE TOM HENDRY WAREHOUSE SEASON SPONSOR
When A Doll’s House was first staged in Copenhagen in 1879, Henrik Ibsen’s masterpiece sparked genuine outrage. Never before had the traditional role of women been challenged in this way. Often referred to as the “father of realism”, Ibsen was hugely influential and his groundbreaking work changed the face of theatre. A Doll’s House and the role of Nora have taken on iconic status and we’re thrilled to stage this classic play as part of our annual Master Playwright Festival.

INDIVIDUAL GIVING The cast of It’s a Wonderful Life: A Radio Play, 2009. PHOTO BY B. MONK
‘The Greatest Gift’ Did you know the original title of It’s a Wonderful Life was The Greatest Gift? Under its original title, the script bounced around studios and nobody knew what to do with it. That is, until Hollywood director Frank Capra got his hands on the project and brought the story to life on the silver screen. Our donors are people who believe in Royal MTC and see the magic and potential in what we do. Ellen Hirst was one such donor. She had been coming to our theatre with her dear friend Janice Kaminsky for more than five decades. Ellen passed away earlier this year, but she believed in the power of giving back and her wish was to challenge you to do the same. In her estate, Ellen left $25,000 to Royal MTC to match all new or additional donations made before December 31, 2018. 30
Believing in something means knowing your investment helps us reach our full potential. Patrons become donors because they want to see Royal MTC thrive and know their gifts truly make a difference. The support and resources provided by people like you give us the tools we need to create the best season possible and strive for an even brighter future. Thanks to the generosity of Ellen Hirst, your gift will go twice as far. For over 60 years our community has believed in us and that’s the greatest gift. After all, what would the holiday season be without It’s a Wonderful Life and what would Royal MTC be without you? For more information on donor opportunities and benefits, visit us at royalmtc.ca. To become a donor or make an additional year-end gift, please contact Kate Supleve, Development Manager, at 204 954 6412 or ksupleve@royalmtc.ca.
