IMAGINATION TAKES US EVERYWHERE Proud to support the imaginative talent in our creative and cultural arts community.

MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Roald Dahl didn’t sweep the floor of his writing hut from one year to the next, kept his old hipbone close at hand after it was replaced, and gave his daughter the slightly ominous name Ophelia. Henrik Ibsen never went to the theatre, was indifferent to all music, and kept a large portrait of Strindberg in his study (“I can’t write a word without that lunatic staring down at me!”). Yet these two great artists have more in common than mere eccentricity. They championed underdogs who rebelled against authority, including two of literature’s best-loved heroines. Matilda Wormwood is a child of uncommon talents, being raised by common parents (though they’re not so much raising her as tolerating her existence). Worse than their neglect is the tyranny of Miss Trunchbull, the headmistress who uses fear and violence to control Matilda and her classmates. If Dahl teaches us nothing else, it’s that repressing a child is like lighting a bomb with a long fuse: you shouldn’t be surprised when, eventually, an explosion blows your front windows out. Steven Schipper

Ibsen’s childhood was just such a long fuse. As a child, Ibsen watched his father’s fortunes crumble, as his mother tried to hold their world together. Years later, his vivid memories helped him create frank portraits of women’s frustration and ultimate rebellion. His heroines shocked audiences (Hedda Gabler ends with the immortal words, “Good God – people don’t do such things”) and helped fuel the emerging quest for female equality. If we dare not repress a child for fear of long-term consequences, what might we fear from a woman, who has the benefit of an adult’s agency and speed? Or from a misunderstood genius? Fifteen-year-old Ibsen wrote about a dream he’d had, only to have his schoolmaster accuse him of copying the composition from some book. A year later, Ibsen “left his parents, whom he scarcely knew, the town which he hated, the schoolmates and schoolmasters to whom he seemed a surly dunce.” At the age of nine, Dahl was sent to a boarding school, where he lived in fear of caning. When Dahl was 14, his boarding school report card described him as, “A persistent muddler, writing and saying the opposite of what he means.” Those early injustices have been reimagined on pages, stages and screens around the world, and remind us that, to paraphrase Shakespeare, every underdog has his day. Yours always,

ROALD DAHL’S MATILDA THE MUSICAL

Magic Effects

BY KARI HAGNESS, HEAD OF PROPERTIES PROP PLANNING

Prop planning starts when the director and designer discuss the overall vision they have of the set, scene by scene, as well as the flow. By that time, our Department reads the script and makes a list of props or set dressing referred to in the script, which the designer can edit. In recent years, designers have provided us with their “inspiration board” so we can get a feel for the world of the play, but these don’t give us working information about what is actually wanted. Most designers will provide us with scale drawings we can use to build the props. Matilda The Musical is a story about a child who loves to read, and the artistic team has envisioned a world for her that is completely surrounded by shelves of books. These shelves will be climbed on and lit from inside. As the show will also be travelling to Edmonton and Vancouver, the books have to be permanently attached with lighting effects built into the shelves. These will come apart for loading

onto transport trucks. Most of the books will be vacuuformed plastic attached to the shelves and painted. Of course, many of the books can be removed by the actors. Some will be made from Styrofoam and Coroplast plastic sheets, and some will be real books which are abused by Matilda’s ignorant father. Others will be made from wood so they can be climbed on. A week before rehearsals start, stage management comes on board and gets the rehearsal hall ready. We will pull rehearsal props from our stock at that time. On the first day of rehearsal we expect to have something for every prop/furniture piece on the list, either the real thing or a comparable stand-in. When the director starts to block the movements of the scenes, the actors will have a sense of what they will be moving or holding. MAGIC TRICKS

With a popular show such as Matilda The Musical, which has had many previous productions, we search online for reference photos and videos of specific

ROALD DAHL’S MATILDA THE MUSICAL “trick” props. A case in point is “The Cake” that is used in the musical number Bruce. This is an enormous cake with one piece missing (too large to be eaten onstage). The nine school desks also have to be solid enough to stand on, but easy for children to move and spin. For these pieces, we had to design and manufacture custom swivel casters. Many other magic effects use projections, pop-ups and sleight of hand. Departmental brainstorming sessions resulted in various experiments. It’s important to bear in mind that tricks have to be reliable, simple to operate and easy to reset (for eight shows a week). We built and sourced over 350 props for the show, not including the hundreds of books. Some help the actors play their roles convincingly while many more are meant to delight audiences and fill us with childlike wonder. All of them help bring to life Roald Dahl’s darkly giddy genius, and the life he imagined for one miraculous little girl.

SYNOPSIS – Matilda’s parents don’t understand her. They mock her decision to read when she could be watching television. Her mom is an amateur ballroom dancer. Her dad is too busy cheating his clients to pay Matilda much attention. But Matilda loves to learn so she finds sanctuary in the library where she befriends Mrs. Phelps. The kindly librarian is mesmerized by the young girl’s stories. Matilda also shines at school despite being terrorized by Miss Trunchbull. Fortunately, Miss Honey recognizes her genius and nurtures Matilda’s ability to lift up those around her.

eight, Ibsen and his family experienced poverty due to problems of his father’s business. Their fortune was sold to cover debts and his family relocated to a rundown farm. Ibsen spent a lot of this time reading, painting and performing magic tricks. While attending the University of Christiania in Oslo, Ibsen made friends with writers and people who had a passion for the arts. One of them was Ole Schulerud, who funded the publication of Ibsen’s first play, Catalina.

CELEBRATING THE LIFE AND WORK OF

henrik ibsen Henrik Ibsen was a Norwegian dramatist and poet who was one of the most famous and controversial writers in world literature. He was the founder of the Modernist theatre movement and was regarded as the father of modern drama. Ibsen was born in Norway on March 20, 1828 and showed no signs of becoming a writer as a child. He was the oldest of five children and at age 15 stopped school and began working as an apprentice in an apothecary. His father was a successful merchant and his mother was a painter and loved going to the theatre. At the age of 34

At age 23, Ibsen met violinist and theatre manager Ole Bull. This serendipitous encounter led to Ole offering Ibsen a job at a new theatre. Though the position was challenging, it proved to be a learning experience and a source of inspiration to writing new plays. As theatre director and resident playwright of the new National Theatre at Bergen, Ibsen directed the Norwegian Theatre in Kristiana from 1857 to 1863. Ibsen played a significant role in the rise of realism in theatre, challenging audiences to question conventional morality and social conditions. The goal of realism was to create theatre that resembled real life and included dialogue that sounded natural and not scripted. In 1862 Ibsen left Norway and relocated to Italy. It was there that he wrote Brand, a five-act dramatic poem which garnered popularity in Scandinavia. A few years later, Ibsen wrote one of his praised works, Peer Gynt, which

IBSENFEST chronicles the adventures of Peer Gynt of Norwegian folklore. This play is one of the most performed Norwegian plays to date. In 1871 Ibsen began writing what he considered to be one of his greatest works, Emperor and Galilean. This play was based on the life of Julian the Apostate and has been revived rarely. One of his best known and most widely performed plays, A Doll’s House, deals with the limitations and harsh expectations of women. Some of his other works include: An Enemy of the People, The Burial Mound and The Feast of Solhoug, which was inspired by Norwegian folk songs. Ibsen returned to Norway in 1891 and was recognized as a literary hero. At first the spotlight was hard to take, but in later years he embraced it as Kristiania (known as Oslo today) became a tourist destination because of his work. There is a statue in honour of Ibsen in front of the National Theatre in Oslo. Created by Stephan Sinding, this statue was built in 1899 and is located near the Ibsen Museum.

Henrik Ibsen Playwright

One of the most-produced dramatists in the world, Ibsen (1828-1906) is revered in Norway as its most famous author and a national symbol, even though he spent much of his life abroad. He was largely responsible for the rise of realism in the theatre. In works that possess revelatory power, Ibsen challenged his audiences to question conventional morality and social conditions. Often controversial, his works were deeply unsettling to many of his Victorian contemporaries. He is now widely regarded as the “father of modern drama” and one of the greatest dramatists who ever lived.

INDIVIDUAL GIVING

Thank You! “Never do anything by halves if you want to get away with it. Be outrageous. Go the whole hog. Make sure everything you do is so completely crazy it’s unbelievable...” — MATILDA

As we approach the mid-point of our season, we want to take a moment to simply say “Thank you.” Your support allows us to take risks. To be outrageous. To go whole hog. Thank you for honouring the memory and generosity of Ellen Hirst by rising to the challenge of her matching gift. Thank you for buying a ticket to see this show and bringing life to our theatre – you are the reason we do what we do. Your support comes in many forms. Whether it be giving donations to support our endeavours, being a loyal 58

subscriber, or volunteering, we see you and we thank you. Royal MTC is nothing without you, the amazing community that inspires and supports us. We’ve had an incredible season thus far; one filled with the kind of magic that makes us feel like kids again and reminds us of just how special live performance is. We’re so excited to show you what’s up our sleeve for the rest of the season. For more information about donating and donor benefits, contact Kate Supleve, Development Manager, at 204 954 6412 or email ksupleve@royalmtc.ca.
