IMAGINATION TAKES US EVERYWHERE Proud to support the imaginative talent in our creative and cultural arts community.

MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR As we settle into mid-winter, we are so excited to usher these two plays onto our stage. Mark Crawford’s The New Canadian Curling Club arrives on our Mainstage following its tour across beautiful Manitoba and Northwest Ontario, while Frances Koncan’s Women of the Fur Trade has been wowing audiences both locally and across the country through its various phases of development. The former is quickly becoming a contemporary Canadian classic, and the latter boldly makes its full-length world premiere to join the canon of great Canadian plays! Kelly Thornton

These plays deal with identity, belonging, and our

connection to the land and each other. While they are both outrageous, laugh-outloud comedies, one tells the story of the First Peoples of this land, and the birth of the Métis nation, while the other reflects on Canada’s newest arrivals. In the words of Koncan herself, “Comedy is only funny when it is truthful,” and it’s clear that both she and Crawford pierce uncomfortable truths with their work by tickling our funny bone to get to our rawest nerves. As Crawford has thrust a global village onto the ice to help us confront ourselves and our biases towards ‘the other’, Koncan employs satire and a refreshingly modern lens to examine colonization and our cultural inheritance on this land. Together these plays ask us to look forward and to envision our future together. Thank you so much for joining us.

THE NEW CANADIAN CURLING CLUB

New Canadians Try Curling “For Real” BY RESBY COUTTS The New Canadian Curling Club’s underlying premise of newcomers to Canada testing the sport of curling played out “for real” in early January at Winnipeg’s Granite Curling Club. About 35 young members of the Winnipeg Newcomer Sport Academy, originally from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Ivory Coast and Syria, had previously been introduced to the sport in the gymnasium. After three sessions of Rocks & Rings floor curling, they were ready to try the real thing.

Both say it was tricky at first to throw the heavy curling rocks but eventually they could get them to the other end of the ice. “It is a ‘Canadian’ game,” says Abdul – “it is a hard, challenging game,” says Ali, when the two are asked what their thoughts were about trying curling.

Thirteen-year-old Samira and her 15-yearold brother Abdul, originally from Syria, have been in Canada for almost four years. Fatima, 14, came from Syria two years ago. Ali arrived from Syria within the last year. They were excited to try curling, but admit it was a strange experience in many ways. “I saw it on TV at the Olympics and we tried floor curling at school,” says Samira, who is getting used to Manitoba’s cold and enjoys trying the ‘fun things’ in our cold-weather nation like learning to skate or curl. 6

“It seems easy but we fell a lot of times. It was fun!” says Fatima.

“The hardest thing was to stay balanced,” Abdul says of his time on the ice. He used to not like the cold but is adapting. “At first the hardest thing was to get the rock all the way down,” admits Ali. “But soon I could get it to the other end and sometimes too hard and it went through.” The smiles on the faces of the youngsters tell you they enjoyed the experience. Does it mean they’ll grow up as curlers? Not necessarily, but because they have tried it they look forward to trying it again. The Winnipeg Newcomer Sport Academy was established about three years ago by Carolyn Trono who, in her

THE NEW CANADIAN CURLING CLUB professional life, is Director of Quality Sport Development for the Sport for Life Society. The Academy is her volunteer opportunity to use her sport organization and coaching expertise to help provide access to sport. Her objective was simple – to expose newcomers to more Canadian sports and provide basic skills so they can play and participate in their new community, creating a sense of belonging. She saw a gap in opportunities for newcomer families and their children to access sport. The Academy uses a multi-sport approach to provide opportunity to play soccer but also be exposed to many other sports played here. Her work expertise ensures strong connections with the mainstream sport community while recognizing some of the challenges faced by newcomers. Newcomers face barriers most often due to a lack of awareness and understanding. Organizations can be unknowingly unwelcoming, access to facilities is limited due to expense and scheduling and cultural awareness is lacking. “I have learned so much about the challenges of moving to a new country and certainly refugee families face very big challenges in settling. Until I got involved, I was totally unaware. Sport can be a way of welcoming if we truly understand and address the barriers,” Ms. Trono says. Curling is such a traditional Canadian sport that she felt it must be included in the program. “Rocks & Rings is a quality sport program and isn’t expensive to play. The time on the ice was a special treat and the kids/families loved it. We make assumptions that everyone knows what february/march 2020

curling, is but I got some questions like whether they should bring their skates and helmets,” she says. CurlManitoba’s Executive Director Craig Baker was on hand at the Granite to observe on that Saturday in January. He calls the experience on the Winnipeg Newcomer Sport Academy’s curling day one of the most meaningful of his time working in the sport. “The idea of playing our sport, or any ice sport, is so completely outside the reality of where these kids have come from,” he says. “Simply put, it was a joy to see them trying something new with such enthusiasm and excitement.” Baker acknowledges that it points out the responsibility of organizations like CurlManitoba to do more – to play a part beyond their traditional roles by ensuring newcomers are made welcome and comfortable. CurlManitoba’s active support and enthusiastic encouragement of the Winnipeg Newcomer Sport Academy’s curling initiative was a first major step in this direction. Baker vows it won’t be the last. THE NEW CANADIAN CURLING CLUB

IN CONVERSATION WITH THE

PLAYWRIGHT and DIRECTOR MARK Crawford (Playwright):

You directed the premiere production of this play at the Blyth Festival in 2018. What is it like directing a play for the second time? MILES POTTER (DIRECTOR): Well, I’ve

done this a few times, directing the same play more than once (I’ve done Macbeth three times, once on this very stage) (I hope you don’t mind my mentioning THAT play) and what can I say, it’s always a strange experience. You try to come to it anew each time, while trying to also remember what you learned the first time you did it without ‘imposing” ideas on the new cast. Bit of a juggling act. You’ve now seen a number of productions of this play since we first did it at Blyth. Is there anything you’ve learned as a playwright now that you’ve seen multiple productions of your play? MARK: I've learned a lot. After the

premiere production, I did some rewrites for the sake of clarity and pace, and then I made more tweaks after seeing the second production at Alberta Theatre Projects. It's hugely informative to see the same text interpreted by different actors and creative teams. Across multiple productions, certain moments have been almost identical, while some have been interpreted very differently. And I’ve learned a ton from watching the play with different audiences. Since this is a comedy, it’s fascinating to clock where the laughs are in different productions and in different communities. And it's always fun to see how people stage the curling games. 8

Speaking of curling: what’s your theory on why Canadians love this game so much? MILES: In my opinion (and as the great

Canadian actor David Fox always said: ‘just my opinion, probably wrong’) it has to do with these factors: it appears that anyone can do it, hence it’s inclusive, it involves walking on ice, which, like sex in a canoe, defines Canadians, and often involves drinking, even if we’ve now made it ‘up in the bar’. I’ve always wondered, Mark: are you able to write anywhere? Do you need special conditions? Time of day? Music? MARK: I wish I was one of those play-

wrights who could churn out pages anywhere, anytime, but I’m just not. If I’m home, I work in my office. If I’m away, I find a room where I can be alone and close the door. I work in silence—no music. I write on my laptop, but for jotting down notes and scribbling things out, I have a preferred type of notebook and a favourite kind of pen. I write at all different times of day; sometimes I’ll wake up at 3:30 in the morning with an idea for a line and jot it down. I also walk a lot, and that’s when I do a bunch of writing in my head—or, let’s be honest, have full conversations with myself on the sidewalk. In addition to directing this play, you worked with me as a dramaturge on the script. In your eyes, what’s the job of a dramaturge? And how is it related to directing?

Ovation

february/march 2020

THE NEW CANADIAN CURLING CLUB MILES: Well, one doesn’t have to be

a director to be a dramaturge, but it doesn’t hurt. One of the big misconceptions is that if you are a director, you can automatically be a dramaturge. They are fundamentally different skills. The dramaturge helps the playwright realize what it is they are really trying to say. Not the plot of the play, but the theme that the play is trying to communicate. Often a playwright only has a vague idea of how to express the theme in a sentence, though they instinctively know what it is. Once it is concretely stated, they can see what in their story is helpful and what is not. It is the primary tool for ‘constructing’ a coherent theatre experience. From the theme, one can derive all the other structural elements of a play. This is basically why I ask you so many questions when you bring me a first draft! It’s great if I can dramaturge a play and then direct it, because I know it’s structurally sound: my dramaturge ‘hat’ makes my director ‘hat’ a lot easier to wear. Speaking of hats, you’re also an accomplished actor. How does your playwriting ‘hat’ fit with your actor ‘hat’? Are they related? MARK: Hey, thanks! The two hats are

definitely related. I worked as an actor for a good decade (once on this very stage, in fact, as Elwood P. Dowd in Harvey) before my first play debuted.

february/march 2020

For me, acting in various types of plays— new Canadian work, Shakespeare, American classics, Theatre for Young Audiences—was a great education in playwriting. I learned how plays are constructed by being inside of them. Being an actor also influences how I write characters. I aim to create roles that actors will want to play; parts they can sink their teeth into, both comedically and dramatically. When I change hats and do an acting job, I’d say being a writer helps me see the bigger picture: what my character’s function is within a play, how I can be of service to the text and its ideas, and having sat on the other side of the table a few times now, how to navigate my way through moments in rehearsal when I’m feeling a bit blocked. Now, Miles, I’ve saved the most burning question for last: what’s your favourite Timbit? MILES: Truly? The ones Omar’s mom

makes for the show. They’re better than Tim’s and better for you! (But chocolate is still the preferred flavour.) MARK: Shout out for Mombits! They

really are delicious—and gluten-free. But when it comes to the real deal, I’m a Sour Cream Glazed man, all the way.

Curling Terms (AS MENTIONED IN THE PLAY)

BONSPIEL – A curling competition or

tournament. BURNED STONE – A stone in motion touched by a member of either team, or any part of their equipment. Burned stones are removed from play.

HOUSE – The rings or circles toward which play is directed consisting of a 12' ring, 8' ring, 4' ring and a button. PEBBLE – A fine spray of water applied

to a sheet of curling ice before commencing play.

BUTTON – The circle at the centre of

LEAD – The first player on a team to

the house.

deliver a pair of stones for their team in each end.

HACKS – The foot-holds at each end of the ice from which the stone is delivered. HAMMER – The team with the last stone in any given end of play. The 16th delivered stone in any end is called the “Hammer.” HOG LINE – A line 10 metres from the

hack at each end of the ice.

10

SECOND – The curler who delivers the second pair of stones for their team in each end. VICE-SKIP, THIRD OR MATE – The third player on a team to throw two stones in each end. Generally this player acts as the skip when the skip is delivering their stones and assists with shot selection decisions.

THE NEW CANADIAN CURLING CLUB SKIP – The player who determines the

strategy, and directs play for the team. The skip delivers the last pair of stones for their team in each end. SLIDER – Slippery material placed on

the sole of the shoe, to make it easier to slide on the ice. SWEEPING – The action of moving a broom or brush back and forth in the path of a moving stone. TEE LINE – The line that passes through the centre of the house parallel to the hog line and backline.

Descriptions from the “Glossary of Curling Terms” on curling.ca, compiled by Desirée Pappel.

SYNOPSIS – In order to diversify their club, Marlene invites four new Canadians – well, one isn’t actually new – to learn to curl. But when she breaks her hip, Marlene must enlist her politically incorrect ex-husband Stuart to step in. Despite Stuart’s abrasive manner and general intolerance, Mike, Anoopjeet, Charmaine and Fatima agree to show up every week. As they battle bad knees, personal preoccupations and internal strife, the road to curling mastery (or simply staying upright) is a slippery one. Can they pull together as a team when it counts?

THE POWER OF PERSPECTIVE In the words of Tom Hendry, the arts “give a great city an image of its soul” and for 62 years Royal MTC has been telling stories that reflect who we are. Now, more than ever, it’s important that our stories reflect the growing diversity of our province and represent who we are as a community today. It’s thanks to donors like you that we can give more playwrights the opportunity to tell stories from new perspectives. This season, your donations brought diverse voices to the stage, from Bang Bang and The Color Purple, to The New Canadian Curling Club and Women of the Fur Trade. Donate today and IMAGINE the exciting and thought-provoking stories you’ll see in the years to come! For information about donating and donor benefits, please contact Chris Turyk, Development Manager, at 204 954 6412 or cturyk@royalmtc.ca.

WOMEN OF THE FUR TRADE

Playwright’s Notes BY FRANCES KONCAN

It’s a sunny spring day in New York City. I am photogenically sipping an oat milk latte at a Twin Peaks-inspired coffee shop and trying to take a selfie without being obvious about it when I get a text from my friend Emmy. “Ben Whishaw is in a new play called Norma Jeane Baker of Troy and we have to go,” she says. “You like Anne Carson, right?” FACT: I am a decade-long, diehard Ben Whishaw fan. FACT: I have no idea who Anne Carson is. FACT: I’ll see anything at least once. “Great! You’ll like it. You’ll like Anne Carson,” promises Emmy. “She’s impossible to understand.” Emmy was right: I loved the show. --David Lynch says catching ideas is like catching fish. If that’s true, then I was fishing with the bait of known Fur Trade history within the pond of Anne Carson in 2019, Twin Peaks in 2018, and in the music of The Killers in 2017 while writing this play. I couldn’t catch an idea for this note. I don’t have a pond for 2020 yet. I’m at a loss for words. !!! (HALI)BUT !!! In her book Decreation, Carson says that “a quote is a cut, a section, a slice of someone’s orange. You suck the slice, toss the rind, skate away.” That may be true, but what Carson doesn’t mention is that the combination of the right slice 22

of oranges from the right people can illuminate a lot of truth. So, here’s a little note about this little play, told by a more respectable voice than my own: white men. They will tell it in a simple structure which will hopefully have you thinking: “This is familiar, I am comfortable, therefore, this is good.” A NOTE ABOUT WOMEN OF THE FUR TRADE ACT I: “I hyperdecant. Do you not hyperdecant? Are you just doing regular decanting?” — Connor Roy, Succession ACT II: “I guess it bothers people that it’s not grammatically correct, but I think I’m allowed to do whatever I want.” — Brandon Flowers, The Killers ACT III: “The structure of a play is not always the same. The structure of a play depends upon where you are in it. Your experience of an experience depends upon where you are in the experience of experiencing it. We experience theatre moment to moment. That is the only way we experience anything.” — Mac Wellman, Speculations ACT IV: “It’s better not to know what things mean because meaning is a very personal thing. The meaning for me is different than the meaning for somebody else.” — David Lynch ACT V: “Legit question for rural Americans: how do I kill the 30-50 feral hogs that run into my yard within 3-5 mins while my small kids play?” — Willie McNabb SILENCIO.

Director’s Notes BY AUDREY DWYER Welcome to the world of Frances Koncan! Frances skyrocketed into my world over a year ago. I sat down to read Women of the Fur Trade and have been over the moon about it ever since. Frances invites us into an environment that we may recognize. Some of you may have a robust understanding of the land under your feet. You might be thanking your history books for that! Some of you may be curious about its beginnings and are looking to explore. The more I engage with Frances’ artistry, the more I learn about the land I live on. Here you will encounter a world that overflows with change. At its heart are people who long for it. Some are afraid of it. Others are willing to die for it. All navigate it without knowing what february/march 2020

the future will bring. As our world veers, we can find ourselves off-kilter. Do we need to change or does our power lie in staying exactly the same? The theatre is a place where communities can come together. It is a place where we discover who we are and who we can be. I’m so thankful that you’re here. As the seats fill, I encourage you to look to your left, right, behind you and before you. Who are the people in your community? How do we take part in the world around us as it changes faster than we may comprehend? I welcome you to experience Frances’ play with fresh eyes and ears. Let us examine possibilities, reinvest in our imaginations and laugh along the way!

WOMEN OF THE FUR TRADE

Land-Based Dramaturgy BY LINDSAY LACHANCE, DRAMATURG

In November 2019 I facilitated an embodied and land-based dramaturgical exploration for the further development of Women of the Fur Trade. Frances Koncan, Audrey Dwyer, Linda Beech and two cast members, Toby Hughes Elizabeth Whitbread, and I looked to the land and our varying connections to place, as sources for artistic inspiration. Influenced by my values-based dramaturgical process focusing on the ways the seven Anishinaabeg teachings directly influence my dramaturgical process, I wanted to create a values-based framework that honoured the perspectives of Women of the Fur Trade’s artistic collaborators. I asked each individual to think of a value, a familial teaching, or a symbol that they personally connect to. In presencing this intention, and in carrying it into artistic collaboration, we created guiding principles particular to us as collaborators, and to the territory on which we are working. After a tour from an employee at Fort Gibraltar, I asked everyone to reconnect with their offer and to walk the land looking for where they found that value reflected back to them. I was curious to see how each individual’s value could

be used as a lens to understand and highlight aspects of the script-development process. In some cases, the initial values transformed or expanded while others were reflecting clearly back at us. This exercise moved us beyond a dramaturgical process that follows the “well-made play” structure or predominantly text-based processes, and instead allowed us to look inwards and think about self-in-relationship to the land and to the others in the process. This allowed us to build a creative framework where the collaborators were invited to bring their best and full selves into the process and is particular to the world Frances is building. This values-based dramaturgical approach is one where the rules of the play’s world are determined by the experiences brought forward by the artistic creators and collaborators. Some of the offers and values that came from our exploration are: Working Hard Accountability Fear Legacy Distortions Where do you see these values reflected in the production?

WOMEN OF THE FUR TRADE

Fur trade TIMELINE 1600s – The fur trade began with

1869-70 – RED RIVER REBELLION

Indigenous peoples trading beaver pelts with Europeans to meet their demand for felt hats. The fur trade was one of the main reasons that Europeans explored and colonized what is now Canada.

Louis Riel was the head of the Métis National Committee which was consolidated into a provisional government. This government would negotiate the Manitoba Act with the Canadian Government which led to the establishment of Manitoba as a province in 1870.

1670 – The Hudson’s Bay Company is

the first company to trade in fur. 1809-1810 – The North West Company

trading post Fort Gibraltar is built. Fort Gibraltar plays a key role in the development of the Red River Colony and in the conflict between the North West Company and the Hudson’s Bay Company. 1821 – Fur companies North West

Company and Hudson’s Bay Company amalgamate. 1822 – Upper Fort Garry is established

at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, near the North West Company’s Fort Gibraltar. 1830s – Lower Fort Garry fur trading

site is constructed. This was a major trading site for leather goods, dried fish and farmed crops. OCT 22, 1844 – BIRTH OF LOUIS RIEL

Founder of Manitoba and Métis leader Louis Riel is born in the Red River Settlement in Manitoba. 1851 – From Lower Fort Garry, the Hudson’s Bay Company operates fur trade forts throughout the area they call Rupert’s Land.

1863 – Thomas Scott moves to the Red

River Colony from Ireland. Scott is a labourer who joined the Canadian Party. DEC 23, 1869 – RIEL'S PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT

Louis Riel issues a Declaration of the people of Rupert’s Land and the Northwest and becomes head of the provisional government of Red River. MAR 4, 1870 – Thomas Scott is executed

on orders from Louis Riel after being charged with insubordination and treason. APR 16, 1874 – RIEL EXPELLED

Louis Riel is expelled from the House of Commons when he attempts to take his seat. MAR 19, 1885 – RIEL'S PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT

A provisional government at Batoche of the North-West was proclaimed, with Louis Riel as president and Gabriel Dumont as adjutant general. NOV 16, 1885 – LOUIS RIEL HANGED

Louis Riel is hanged for treason at the Regina jail. SOURCES: THECANADIANENCYCLOPEDIA.CA, MHS.MB.CA, CANADASHISTORY.CA DRAWING OF FORT GARRY: LIBRARY AND ARCHIVES CANADA, ACC. NO. 1983-100-1

SYNOPSIS – Three women of different cultural teachings navigate their place and identity during the precarious times of the fur trade era. Confined to a small fort Marie-Angelique (Métis) wants to marry Louis Riel, Cecilia (British) longs for the return of her husband and Eugenia (Ojibwe) dislikes men in general, particularly John A. McDonald. While the women grow restless, they correspond with the men who hold power in the outside world. As tensions mount in the fictional Reddish River Valley, the three friends brace themselves for what is to come. Using 21st century slang and pop culture references, Women of the Fur Trade reveals shifting perspectives on women’s power in the old and new world.

MAINSTAGE BUILDING IMPROVEMENTS We've been working to improve your experience at the theatre. Here’s the update: • New seat cushions (yes!): the first 10 rows were completed this summer and we'll continue until the whole auditorium is done. • The bathroom in the northwest corner of the building is now gender inclusive, which means all are welcome. It's also wheelchair-friendly. • We have new hearing-assistance devices. You can get a headset from one of our friendly volunteers as you enter the lobby from the Box Office. • Water! Well, this isn’t new but a reminder that we have a water fountain near the Rorie Street entrance and water jugs on every bar. You can also bring in your own water bottle as long as you promise not to squirt your fellow patrons!

ACT LIKE A STAR! Everyone at the theatre is part of the show. Yes, even you. You want to be a star, don’t you? These tips will make you a stand-out performer (in a good way)!

Scents and Sensibility

Many theatre lovers experience adverse medical reactions from scented products. Please consider others before using scented products.

Park Your Mobile Device

We know something interesting is happening on social media. It always is. But your neighbours want to watch the play. Please turn off all mobile devices.

The Sound of Silence

Our theatre has great acoustics. So when you’re talking during the show, everyone can hear you. Your neighbours, the ushers and even the actors. We want you to talk about the show but at intermission or after the final bows.

We’re always happy to see you at the theatre. Thank you for coming!
