MESSAGE FROM ROYAL MTC’S ARTISTIC DIRECTOR If Dame Agatha Christie is associated with any particular setting, it would be the drawing room of the country manor. She is a master at creating a cozy scene with a fire in the grate, knitting in a basket, and scones on a fine old silver tea tray. There, in this rural Eden, murder seems especially shocking, and a detective essential for the restoration of order and calm. Where then did Witness for the Prosecution come from? In this great psychological puzzle, Christie Steven Schipper abandons her bucolic roots for the courtrooms and law offices of post-war London. Christie’s play lacks even a detective, perhaps because the war has changed England. The characters fear that no one will ever be able to fully restore order. In war, loyalties shift, justice is a chimera, and love (if it exists) may be merely a survival tactic. Yet, what revives our spirits in all of Christie’s works (including Witness) is that her characters still strive to do the right thing, they still look for the light within each human being. The murderer is the exception to the rule. Christie’s other characters exemplify decency and humanity, as do the MBA members who devote themselves to an ideal of community service, exemplified by their work with our annual fundraising play. We are, as always, deeply grateful to all the members of Manitoba’s legal community who helped make this production possible. Just as the MBA strives to promote equality and access to justice, we believe that all Manitobans deserve access to theatre and its empathetic power. The funds raised tonight will help us create stories that resonate in the heart of each audience member, not just for an hour or two but, if we are lucky, for the rest of their lives. Yours always,

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE MANITOBA BAR ASSOCIATION I have had the privilege of being in three Lawyers Plays. If you like to sing, dance or act, there could not be a more welcoming or professional environment to share your talents. For the cast, I know there is an exhilarating buzz around show week. Be kind if you see a cast member next week, as they will surely be suffering from what we call “play withdrawal!” This year’s production of Witness for the Prosecution marks the 26th joint production Melissa Beaumont between the Royal MTC and the MBA. I am so pleased to be able to tell you that these productions to date have raised over $1 million in support of Royal MTC. Congratulations to the cast, which is entirely comprised of MBA member volunteers. They have worked extremely hard memorizing lines, rehearsing blocking and perfecting their English accents. The support our MBA members receive from Royal MTC is second to none. I would like to thank Director Paul Essiembre, Executive Producer Chuck McEwen, the Royal MTC/MBA committee members and all the staff at Royal MTC who make this event a success year after year. I also thank all the corporate sponsors for their generous support of this event and their contribution to the fundraising efforts of Royal MTC. Finally, thank YOU for coming out to the show and supporting your family, friends, colleagues and Royal MTC. You are in for a treat!

ARTISTS David Dick

Brenda Keyser

Leonard Vole

Janet MacKenzie

David, a.k.a. “Double D” (D2), is making his Royal MTC/MBA debut in the role of Leonard Vole. While this marks well over a dozen times D2 has played a character accused of murder, he tries not to take it personally… after all, typecast is still cast! D2 worked early on as an actor in the NYC and Boston areas before moving to Winnipeg (it’s a long—romantic—story). He has appeared in over 30 film and TV projects and is currently pursuing his goal of starring in the Royal MTC/MBA show becoming a lawyer. D2 is humbled to be surrounded by such talented people for this production and would like to thank his wife and four children for their support, as well as Wiens & Franz Law Office!

Brenda is delighted to be back in the latest Royal MTC/MBA production after a lengthy hiatus. Other appearances in the past include the prosecutor in The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, the murderous judge in And Then There Were None, the dispossessed Russian countess in You Can’t Take it With You, the Salvation Army general in Guys and Dolls, an English teacher in Grease and a rubby in Little Shop of Horrors. This time she is Janet Mackenzie, the Scottish housekeeper/companion to Miss Emily French (AKA the deceased). She is grateful to her husband Peter Murdock for his continuous love and support and for graciously agreeing to run lines almost daily and work on the accent. Next to work on are her housekeeping skills!

Peter Kingsley

Caleigh Glawson

Sir Wilfred Robarts

Greta

Caleigh is thrilled to be joining the cast of Witness for the Prosecution in her first Lawyers Play. Caleigh is currently finishing her second year of law school and has been involved in the performing arts scene for many years. Prior to attending law school, she received a musical theatre diploma from Randolph College for the Performing Arts in Toronto. She has appeared in numerous productions over the years and is always grateful when she can return to the stage. She thanks Paul, Chuck and everyone else who makes this event possible. Much love to her friends and family who support her wild decisions of rehearsing during exams! 10

Peter is thrilled to be returning in his third Royal MTC/MBA performance. Once again donning a wig and an accent! When not impersonating a Knight of the Realm, he is a Senior Manager at Legal Aid Manitoba. Many thanks to the cast and crew who have tirelessly worked to make this production possible. Peter would also like to especially thank his wife and family who have let him take the time to be part of this production and have spent countless evenings going over his lines again, and again, and again.

ARTISTS Ashley Korsunsky

Ryan Krahn

Carter

Mr. Clegg

Ashley is excited to join such a wonderful cast and crew in her first Royal MTC/MBA production. Although no stranger to the stage, this marks Ashley’s return after a 15-year hiatus. As a child, Ashley fell in love with acting, and participated in various theatrical and film productions. She has always wanted to be part of the Lawyers Play and is incredibly grateful for the opportunity. Ashley would like to thank her partner, family (especially her parents), friends, and colleagues at Manitoba Public Insurance for their tremendous support. Enjoy the show!

Ryan made his Lawyers Play debut in the 2016 production of La Cage aux Folles. He is delighted to be returning this year in the role of Mr. Clegg. Between Lawyers Plays, Ryan appeared in Still Listening: Voices Among Us (Steinbach Neighbours for Community). Ryan also sits on the board of the Gas Station Arts Centre. Ryan is part of the in-house legal team at SkipTheDishes.

ARTISTS Alex Nisbet Plain-Clothes Detective/Policeman

Alex is very excited to be acting in Witness for the Prosecution. This is Alex’s first role in a play since elementary school but he has had recent work in a Myers LLP yearend video that was rumored (by Alex) to be a tour de force. Alex would like to thank the director, stage manager, cast and crew for an exciting new experience. A very special thank you to Caitlin and all my family, friends and firm members for their support.

Jeff Palamar Mr. Mayhew

Jeff is back, having at long last recovered from the stress, strain and very serious manscaping required for his stage debut as Phaedra in La Cage aux Folles. This time he has abandoned high heels in favour of more sensible shoes and treads along what hopefully is a more familiar path, playing the role of Mayhew, who is (wait for it) a lawyer. The part is far harder than it appears at first glance, as Mayhew is obliged to remain silent for much of act

two. Remaining silent does not come easily to a lawyer, as many of us appreciate. Angie and Bailey are owed enormous gratitude for putting up with a lot (numerous variations of a bad English accent, to start). Many thanks as well to the enormously talented and supportive team at Royal MTC, as well as all other family and friends who have made this second crazy adventure a reality.

Kaitlynn Porath Court Clerk

Kaitlynn is thrilled to be making her debut with the Royal MTC/MBA Lawyers play! Kaitlynn has a bit of experience with the theatre, being an alumna of the Black Hole Theatre out of University of Manitoba and has been able to put some of those skills to use in the courtroom as well. She is currently articling at Phillips Aiello… so this show hits comfortably close to home. Kaitlynn would like to thank the cast and crew for all their creativity and hard work on the show; Paul and Chuck for allowing her this opportunity to grace the stage once more; her beautiful friends and family for their generous support; and her partner in crime— ….criminal defense for picking up the slack. Enjoy the show!

ARTISTS Brad Regehr

Steve Scarfone

Mr. Myers

Inspector Hearne

This is Brad’s eighth Royal MTC/MBA production. Brad has lots of people to thank. He’d like to start by thanking Maurice Law for their support, Paul for being such an awesome director, and Chuck and all the Royal MTC staff for putting up with all of us. He also wants to thank Book Club just because, and Jonesy for teaching him how to speak like a “stuck-up toff”. Finally, he especially wants to thank his family for all their support and, in particular, the love of his life, Nalini, and his sons, Sage, Kieran and Sanjay.

Steve has but a minor role in this year’s Lawyers Play, his eighth such production. And it comes with some genuine concern about aging in Winnipeg’s vibrant performing arts community. You see, in years past, Steve had much larger roles, beginning with his star turn as Demetrius in the Steven Schipper-directed A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2007). However, the disturbing trend over the past 10 years has seen both lines and time onstage diminish, not just for Steve but for all men who commit the unthinkable sin of growing old. Aging out is the term now used in Hollywood. The reality is, there are few good roles for men over 40 – the industry it seems has marginalized older

ARTISTS men to brief upstage appearances where, presumably, wrinkles aren’t as noticeable as might otherwise be the risk under the bright downstage lighting. Nonetheless, Steve remains grateful for the opportunity and would like to thank all the other old guy “regulars” who turned down this career-limiting role – perhaps in righteous defiance – leaving Chuck with no choice but to call Steve.

Priti Shah Justice Wainwright

Priti is honoured to return to the stage for her 14th production and to celebrate a 20-year relationship with Royal MTC having debuted as a Kit Kat Girl in 1998. Anyone looking for Priti’s usual costume should focus hard in Act two as you shouldn’t be fooled by the long robe, grey hair and glasses. Thank you to newbie director extraordinaire Paul Essiembre and to Chuck McEwen for gently readying us for opening. What an amazing cast and crew to work with! And biggest thanks of all to my amazing daughter Bethlehem who has always encouraged me to apply to be a judge; just for a few nights your wish has come true. These performances are dedicated to all those special friends and family lost to or battling Cancer.

18

Robert Tyler Dr. Wyatt

Robert may always have wanted to be a doctor, but the love for property law detoured him away from the operating room and into more exciting endeavours such as corporate, real estate, municipal and foreclosure law. Now he can be a doctor. This is the first time he has been onstage, ever, if you don’t include high school drama club or any of his workrelated performances as a partner with MLTAikins. He has been a season ticket holder and supporter of Royal MTC for many years, and expresses his gratitude to all who have chosen to attend this event in support of great local theatre.

Heather Wadsworth Romaine

Heather is over the moon to be able to return to the stage in her second Lawyers Play! She played Juror #5 in last year’s 12 Angry Jurors and is honoured to have been trusted with such an important role in this year’s production of Witness for the Prosecution. Heather has always had a passion for theatre and studied acting in high school and university. She is an associate at Petersen King Law Corporation and is grateful to work with awesome female lawyers on a daily basis. Ein großes Dankeschön an meine Deutschen Akzenttrainer, Mark und Elisa. Heather would also like to thank her amazing family (especially her parents who flew to Winnipeg just to see the show) for all of their support. A special thank you to her husband, Matthew, for always believing in her.

ARTISTS

This is Kyla’s first appearance in the Lawyers Play. Having not graced a stage with her presence since high school she is enthusiastic to be back at it for a brief three minutes per show. Having remained in the practice of law purely for the opportunity to participate in the show, Kyla left private practice mere moments after casting was released to join the People Team at SkipTheDishes. There she enjoys new challenges like searching the world for software engineers, becoming best friends with immigration officers and convincing her fellow cast members (like Ryan Krahn) to also quit their jobs to come work with her. She would like to thank her partner, Jake, for his support and for

ARTISTS first play, Black Coffee, (the only play in which she chose to feature Poirot) in 1930, having been disappointed by the way The Murder of Roger Ackroyd had been adapted into Alibi in 1928. She adapted her bestselling novel And Then There Were None for the stage in 1943, giving it a different ending, followed by, in quick succession, Appointment with Death (1945), Murder on the Nile (1946) and The Hollow (1951). With The Mousetrap (1952), Witness for the Prosecution (1953) and Spider’s Web (1954), she became the only female playwright to have three plays running in the West End at the same time. Later plays include Towards Zero (1956), co-adapted with Gerald Verner, Verdict (1958), possibly her most unusual play, Go Back for Murder (1960) and Rule of Three (1962), a series of three one-act plays. After a hugely successful career and a wonderful life, Ms. Christie died peacefully on January 12, 1976. You can read Agatha Christie’s own account of her life in An Autobiography, which was published after her death in 1977.
