Jet Trails Spring 2023 - First Issue

Page 1

We are both grateful and proud of the way our Scouts, parents and volunteer leaders have persevered through the pandemic and continued to make Scouting programs happen throughout the Middle Tennessee Council. There are many positive attributes that make Scouting strong in the MTC, but the greatest strength comes from our people. Thank you!

We hope everyone is “jumping on board” for a great 2023 Scouting year. Boxwell Scout Reservation continues to grow its programs as well as replace its older buildings and add new faciltities. We will have all new shower houses this summer and the new Roy Grindstaff Skilled Trades Center will have its inaugural season.

In addition to the exciting Council programs at Boxwell, Latimer, Parrish and Grimes Canoe Base, there will be a National Scout Jamboree in West Virginia and the National High Adventure bases will be open to capacity. We encourage all Scouts, leaders and parents to take part in these outdoor opportunities, each has its own unique experience that only Scouting can provide.

We are excited about the future of Scouting programs in the Middle Tennessee Council and look forward to a great 2023 Scouting year.

Yours in Scouting,

We had a great time at Boxwell Reservation for our Webelos Winter Weekend, with over 250 in attendance. This year we had fun with Minnions as the staff put on a great program for all Webelos. Webelos Scouts got to earn Build it, First Responder, Art Explosion, Aware and Care and more. Scouts shot BBs, Archery, and sling shots. They also went repelling, played field games, watched a movie and had an awesome campfire. We would like to thank Candace Boyce Camp Director and Jacob Dubois Program Director for a phenomenal job at Camp.

See you next year at Webelos Winter Weekend on January 5-7 2024

Boxwell Reservation is unique as it has its own camp dedicated just to Cub Scouts called CUBWORLD. Cubworld is a family program and we want you to come out with your Pack and bring your family to enjoy our great summer program at Boxwell Reservation.

At camp all you will need to bring is your personal gear as we provide a canvas tent, cot and mat, great food, and an excellent staff to provide you a great program. Cubworld has a lot to offer you and your family as you will see deer, turkeys, hawks, listen to owls at night, go fishing, see pesky raccoons, and even see a Bald Eagle. Cub Scouts can spend their time working on up to four Adventure pins and belt loops. While at camp, Cubs Scouts can shoot bb guns, bows, sling shots, go swimming, and canoeing. Scouts can also play ga-ga ball, go rappelling, see the stars and enjoy our amazing campfires. This year’s theme is Minions “The Quest of the Lost Banana.”

Family Scouting at Cubworld registration is now live and ready for you and your family to go to camp. Space is limited and will fill up fast. PLEASE GO TO HTTPS://WWW.MTCBSA.ORG/FAMILYSCOUTING

Every year, representatives from each of the six Boy Scouts of America Councils in the great state of Tennessee gather for a day to participate in the Report to the State. These youth members joined forces on February 27, 2023, for a memorable day designed to report the current state of Scouting across Tennessee to the elected officials of Tennessee.

Beginning at 11:00am, Council representatives from across the state began to gather at the MTC office in Nashville, where they enjoyed a fantastic lunch, and listened to State Representative Jody Barrett of Dickson, TN. An Eagle Scout himself, Representative Barrett regaled those in attendance with his personal Scouting background, and how Scouting had helped him become the strong leader he is today. His legislation on behalf of Tennesseans has focused on a range of issues, including affordable housing, public transportation, health care access, criminal justice and the environment, much of which can be directly linked to his Scouting values.

Following lunch, the contingent traveled to the Country Music Hall of Fame for a self-guided tour followed by a guided tour of the State Capitol, before heading to the floor of the Tennessee State Senate for the official program and the report to the state. Lastly, the council representatives presented their Council information during the opening session of the House of Representative and the Senate.

Representatives from each Council included:

Cherokee Area Council Chattanooga, TN - Brody Owens

Chickasaw Council Memphis, TN - Ava Look

Great Smokey Mountains Knoxville, TN - Luke Williams

Middle TN Council Nashville, TN – Wyatt Hensley, Matthew Pyle, David Olakunle, Jack Jones, and Hannah Neal

Sequoyah Council Johnson City, TN – Alexander Hodgin

West Tennessee Area Council Jackson, TN – Jack Carroll

This was an amazing day. Scouting is alive and well in Tennessee.

SAFE SCOUTING

Accidents happen!

It’s how you respond to them that matters.

To ensure the safety of its participants, the Boy Scouts of America expects leaders to use the four points of SAFE:

• Supervision: Youth are supervised by qualified and trustworthy adults;

• Assessment: Activities are assessed for risks during planning;

• Fitness and skill: Leaders have confirmed that prerequisite fitness and skill levels exist for participants to take part safely; and

• Equipment and environment: Safe and appropriately sized equipment, courses, camps, campsites, trails or playing fields are used properly.

However, incidents can occur even when the program is being delivered as designed. That’s when the BSA’s incident reporting process comes into play.

Go to the Middle Tennessee Council website: MTCBSA. org / Unit Support / Health and Safety page, to see what to do and how reporting works.

Stay Scouting Safe!

The Middle Tennessee Council, Boy Scouts of America, held its 31st Annual Nashville Patron Luncheon on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, at the Renaissance Nashville Hotel. More than 850 community leaders and supporters attended to honor the Council’s five Scouts of the Year and to learn about and support the MTC Scouting programs. During the luncheon, former Governor of Tennessee Bill Haslam, hosted a one-on-one conversation with Retired General David H. Petraeus.

The Nashville Patron Luncheon is the Council’s largest fundraising event. In 2023, the luncheon generated more than $1,737,000 in contributions towards our Friends of Scouting campaign goal of $2,861,000. Special thanks to our campaign leadership including Winston Justice, a vice president with Alliance Bernstein, for serving as the Council’s Friends of Scouting Chair, and to Clay Bright, with the Megasite Authority of West Tennessee, who served as the 2023 Nashville Patron Luncheon Chair.
