Jet Trails Spring 2024 - Volume 34 Issue 1

Dear Leaders and Friends of the Middle Tennessee Council,

2023 was a very successful year for Scouting in the Middle Tennessee Council and we want to thank the over 4,000 Middle Tennessee Council volunteers for investing their time, talent, and treasure to ensure Scouts receive the positive benefits of Scouting. The Scouting program in Middle Tennessee is, and always has been, successful because of the many great volunteers and the small cadre of staff working together.

We have very impactful and meaningful goals and plans for 2024. These goals include implementing a revamped Cub Scout program that will simplify Cub Scout rank advancements and meeting plans. We are working diligently on an aggressive plan to replace the Stahlman Dining Hall built in 1960 with the new Harwell Leadership Center and Dining Hall at Boxwell Reservation. We are also building a new family and staff lodge that will house volunteers and camp staff for programs at Boxwell. We are also developing plans to expand our youth and leader recruiting programs through better school access and the use of technology.

Our country has a crisis in mental health for so many of our youth. Scouting is one of the unique programs in Middle Tennessee that provides the ability to help mitigate this crisis and prepare them to become the leaders of tomorrow. Our Scouting leaders have clearly seen an improvement in the youth that have chosen to add Scouting as a part of their life.

Our youth need the benefits of Scouting programs now more than ever. The future of Middle Tennessee Scouting programs is both bright and vitally important. We sincerely thank you for your work and support in making these programs possible.

Scouts and families hearts, and we look forward to

This summer is a great time to have fun with your Scouting friends! We are thrilled to invite you to join us at Adventure Camp this summer. With our theme of Outdoor Adventure, your Scout will have fun and create lasting memories in the great outdoors. They will also get to earn some new adventure requirements and electives while exploring nature on a hike, or learning new skills. There will be something for your Cub Scout to enjoy. We can’t wait to see families come together and have fun at one of our local Adventure Camps. Please visit our website regularly at https://www.mtcbsa.org/adventurecamp for more information, dates, times, locations and registrations.

That sounds like an incredible winter experience for the Scouts at Boxwell Reservation! With over 475 participants, it must have been a bustling and lively atmosphere. The combination of shooting sports, advancement opportunities, games, delicious food, and a campfire would certainly create lasting memories for all involved. The Ice Age theme for Scouts BSA and the Sub-Zero Expedition theme for Webelos add an extra layer of excitement and adventure to the experience. Such winter programs not only offer fun, but also provide valuable learning opportunities for the Scouts. It’s great to hear about such well-organized and engaging events for young people in the Scouting community. We would like to thank the Wa-Ha- Nasa Lodge for a job well done on the staffing for Winter Camp and the Cubworld staff for a great job at Webelos Winter Weekend.

2023 Cub N Family was a resounding success, drawing an impressive crowd of over 4,000 participants, including Scouts, parents, siblings, leaders, and staff members. Cub N Family was not only a testament to the spirit of Scouting, but also to the incredible dedication and effort of the leadership team led by Cub N Family Camp Director, Tracey Kennedy. Thanks to the support and leadership of the team, over 1,500 Cub Scouts shot BB guns and archery, built and sailed pirate ships, dug for buried treasure, and enjoyed a wonderful campfire to wrap each weekend up.

Mark your calendars for 2024 Cub N Family weekends on October 4-6, 11-13, 18-20, and 25-27!

I am pleased to share that 2024 is going to be an exciting and productive year for the continued development of Boxwell Reservation. One of the continued goals of the Council’s volunteer and staff leadership is to have the best facilities and programs of any Scout camp in the nation.

The Middle Tennessee Council and the Properties Trust are delighted to announce that plans are in place to break ground on the new Family and Staff Lodge and the Harwell Leadership Center and Dinning Hall.

The groundbreaking for the Family and Staff Lodge will take place this spring. The lodge will be built behind the current Stahlman Dining Hall and future Harwell Leadership Center. The 4,250 square foot building will sleep up to 56 people and have space for gatherings as well as a 450 square foot front porch facing Old Hickory Lake and a back porch facing the new Harwell Leadership Center. The purpose of the building is to provide better accommodations for volunteers and camp staff during peak programming and training.

Currently, there are plans being put in place to break ground on the Harwell Leadership Center immediately after the 2024 summer camping season. The plan is to complete the facility before 2025 summer camp. In addition to a dining hall, the 18,000 square foot building will have a new industrial kitchen and two conference

rooms that will serve numerous purposes such as youth and leader training, merit badge classes, break out rooms and more. Even with the “perfect storm” of challenges faced by the BSA Bankruptcy, COVID-19 and unprecedented inflation in construction costs, we are close to finalizing the funding needed to break ground on a facility that will last for many generations of Scouts to come.

I want to thank the many volunteers and staff who have worked tirelessly to make much needed and significant contributions of time, talent, and treasure to the redevelopment of Boxwell Reservation. Your investments in facilities and programs are making a positive difference in the lives of our Scouts. Programs like the Roy Grindstaff Skilled Trades Center, where Scouts are earning merit badges in the skilled trades, but more importantly, many are having their first experience in what might be a lifelong career.

Yours in Scouting,

Every Scout Deserves a Trained Leader

Below are the courses offered by Middle Tennessee Coucil for the next few months:

University of Scouting

In addition, there are several training opportunities for youth as well! The UoS goal is to provide information that is practical, and immediately useful on topics that are not readily available at the local unit level.

Sewanee-University of the South

What is NYLT? National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting, action-packed, six-day program designed to provide youth members with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home units and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others. The course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what he/she must KNOW, and what he/she must DO. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO.

The Middle Tennessee Council is excited to offer more Merit Badge Days for Scouts BSA to advance in the BSA program on March 16 and 17, 2024. We will conduct this program in the same manner and style as we have previously.

Will be offering 15 Merit Badge options. Scouts will be able to choose one a day—3 of those 15 are Eagle required. Your Scout can sign up for one day to earn one badge, or both days to earn two badges (Saturday and Sunday). You can find more information and registration links by visit our website at https://www.mtcbsa.org/ScoutsBSAOpportunities/Merit-Badge-Days

Mark your calendar! The Middle Tennessee Council is proud to recognize our 2023 Class of Eagle Scouts at our annual Eagle Scout and Volunteer Recognition Celebration. Representatives from each of the six Boy Scouts of America Councils in the great state of Tennessee were able to participate in the annual Report to the State. These youth members joined forces on February 26, 2024, for a memorable day designed to report the current state of Scouting across Tennessee to the elected officials of the state.

The representatives from across the state and their families met at the Middle Tennessee Council in Nashville, where they enjoyed a fantastic lunch and listened to Senator Ferrill Haile of Sumner and Trousdale Counties. Each Scout received a commemorative frame with each council’s patch. Senator Haile, an Eagle Scout himself, shared with those in attendance his personal Scouting background, and how Scouting and his experience at Philmont helped him become the strong leader he is today.

Following lunch, the contingent boarded a Nashville Trolley and traveled to

the Country Music Hall of Fame for a self-guided tour of the State Capitol, before heading Senate and House of Representatives Scouting in Tennessee.
