Dear Middle Tennessee Council Scouting Family,
We are excited to kick off our fall Scouting programs. In addition to the many great activities your Pack, Troop, Crew or Post has planned, we have many exciting Council and District programs occurring over the next few months. These include District Camporees, Cub Family Weekends at Boxwell, Shooting Sports day for Cub Scouts, Merit Badge Days at Boxwell, Webelos Winter Camp and Scouts BSA Winter Camp, just to name a few. All four of our camps will be offering exciting and diverse programs for our Scouts and leaders.
Changes have been made to the Cub Scout advancement program that will make it easier to implement and more age appropriate. If you would like to see these changes, visit Scouting website at https://www.scouting.org/program-updates/ cub-scout-program-updates-faq-1-3-24/. As you add new Scouts and leaders through the fall roundup program, please make sure they are registered, and a background check has been completed by BSA and they have taken the youth protection training before they meet with the Scouts as a leader. It is also important that new leaders take online training for their position.
Staff and volunteers will be presenting the Scouting program to potential Scouts throughout the fall months and holding joining nights for interested Scouts and parents. It is important that each Scout and family engages quickly after joining and receives the fun and positive benefits of the program. We are asking each unit to have a New Scout Family Chairperson to help new families engage with the unit.
There are over 6,000 registered volunteer leaders in the Middle Tennessee Council. Please know how appreciative we are of the outstanding work you do to make a positive difference in the lives of the young people you serve. Our communities and nation need the values and positive aspects of what Scouting programs do for youth now more than ever.
Yours in Scouting,
Henry “Clay” Bright, III Council President
Karen Bengtson Council Commissioner
Larry Brown Scout Executive
Our Council is committed to keeping our Scouts safe in all aspects of their lives, including online. That’s why we are thrilled to announce that we recently conducted a one-hour training session with Homeland Security Investigations HSI on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at Boxwell Reservation in the Stahlman Dining Hall. We are proud to share that Nashville’s News Channel, WKRN, covered the event, highlighting the importance of cyber safety for our Scouts.
During the training, Scouts learned about the importance of cyber safety and how to identify possible risks online. The training was presented in a fun and interactive way, with activities that kept Scouts engaged and interested. After the presentation, Scouts had the opportunity to ask questions during an awesome QA session with special agents from HSI.
At our Council, we take the safety of our Scouts seriously and we believe that cyber safety is an important aspect of that commitment. We encourage our Scouts and their families to prioritize cyber safety and to reach out to us with any concerns or questions.
Thank you for your commitment to keeping our Scouts safe.

It’s wonderful to hear about the fantastic success of Family Scouting at Cubworld with this year’s theme of Space: A Galactic Journey! This event truly offered a wide array of enjoyable and engaging activities for Cub Scouts and their families. Cubs and families were able to enjoy the new program layout, fishing on the lake, swimming at our pool, seeing the stars, having a carnival, playing kickball and gaga ball, and more exciting family activities.
This year’s attendance was 517 Cub Scouts. It’s heartwarming to see families coming together and creating lasting memories in such a positive and enriching environment. We would like to thank our 32 staff members who dedicated their time and effort to making this camp a resounding success. Their support, dedication, and passion are instrumental in creating meaningful experiences for the Cub Scouts and their families.
The Middle Tennessee Council is looking ahead and wants to announce next year’s theme –“Dinosaurs at Cubworld: As We Go Back in Time” – sounds DinoRific! The anticipation of exploring about the dinosaurs and seeing some dinos will take our Cub Scouts and families back to Jurassic times with an adventure that will sure capture the imagination of Cub Scouts and families alike.
Congratulations to everyone involved for organizing such an impactful and memorable event. Your commitment to providing a fun and enriching program for Cub Scouts and their families is truly commendable. Here’s to another fantastic year of Family Scouting at Cubworld! Make sure to plan your summer with your family and Pack to Boxwell next year as we go on a Quest to find Dinosaurs!
2024 Summer Camp at Boxwell was a fantastic experience for the 1608 Scouts BSA who attended. The Scouts had a blast participating in a wide range of activities, including canoeing, climbing, shotgun shooting, sailing, motorboating and much more. Boxwell provides a plethora of exciting opportunities for the Scouts to learn new skills, adventures, and friendships on their journey to Eagle.
One of the highlights of the camp this year was the introduction of the new program design. The new design provided additional comfort and convenience to the camp experience. In addition, the new program design allowed Scouts to work on one merit badge a day and have a better-quality program. We also created three new ribbons for troops to earn at camp: Spirit of the Camp, Golden Broom, and the Honor Troop of the week. These three ribbons had units putting the spirit of Scouting back into the program as they helped keep camp clean, perform skits during the campfire, flag detail, conservation projects at camp, make camp gadgets and more. Finaly, we added a new first year Scout program called Brownsea. New Scouts got to work on their ranks of Tenderfoot to First Class and work on their Scouting Heritage merit badge as well. With these new program features, we were able to offer a quality program for our Scouts.
This year’s theme added a patriotic touch to the camp’s atmosphere, and Scouts embraced the Olympics at Boxwell, wholeheartedly. From the activities to the ambiance, the Olympics theme created a sense of fun, competitiveness and camaraderie among the Scouts. Scouts got to learn about the Olympics and other countries, test their skills, and earn medals throughout their time at camp.
The Scouts were treated to a robust menu that catered to their appetites and dietary needs. The delicious meals provided sustained the Scouts throughout their active days, ensuring they had the energy to fully engage in all the camp activities.
We would like to thank the 173 Staff members that made this program so rewarding to our Scouts experience at Boxwell Reservation. We are truly blessed to have such an impactful program to offer our Scouts here in the Middle Tennessee Council. Thank you all for your time, effort and volunteering to make this camp so awesome!
Looking ahead, there’s excitement for next year’s camp theme: SURVIVOR. Troops will be competing for the top spot at camp as we will be awarding the Survivor Troop at Boxwell. Scouts are encouraged to sign-up their Troop and mark their calendars for the Camping Kickoff event on November 16, 2024, at University of Scouting.
We look forward to seeing you at camp next summer, and our staff will continue being available for any questions that you may have! Contact Jason Flannery, Camping Director, at jflannery@mtcbsa.org
The Middle Tennessee Council’s Scouting 2024 Memorial Day Flag Placement event was a remarkable demonstration of community spirit and dedication. With over 2,300 participants from across Middle Tennessee, this year’s initiative saw an extraordinary turnout of Scouts and volunteers. They came together to honor and remember those who have served our country by placing flags on the graves of fallen heroes. Their collective effort resulted in the placement of over 60,000 flags, a moving tribute that illuminated the gravesites with a sea of red, white, and blue throughout Middle Tennessee.
This significant event not only highlighted the deep respect and gratitude that the community holds for its veterans but also showcased the organizational strength and commitment of the Middle Tennessee Council. We are lucky to be able to commemorate and preserve the memory of those who have sacrificed for our freedom. The impact of their efforts will be felt deeply by families and communities, as the flags stand as poignant symbols of honor and remembrance.

The announcement of the Order of the Arrow WA-HI-NASA Lodge’s 22nd Annual Boxwell Winter Camp, a Galactic Frontier,” scheduled for December 27-30, 2024, at Boxwell Reservation, is certainly an exciting program for Scouts and enthusiasts alike.
Winter Camp is a special opportunity for Scouts to engage with Boxwell Reservation. Scouts will be able to enjoy our target and range sports, Eagle required merit badges, games, contests, campfires and more. As the event draws nearer, participants can look forward to embarking on a unique journey to Frontier Space, while also deepening their understanding of Scouting and the Order of the Arrow. Kudos to the Lodge for organizing such an exciting winter camp and for their ongoing commitment to fostering growth and learning among Scouts.
