Dear Middle Tennessee Council Scouters, Middle Tennessee Council Scouting programs are thriving and making a positive difference in the lives of youth. Summer Camp at Boxwell Reservation just wrapped up and we are proud to say that 2,069 Scouts and leaders had an outstanding experience. Over 5,911 merit badges were earned by the Scouts. We also hosted 63 Tennessee National Guard youth for a weeklong outdoor adventure. We are honored to partner with the Tennessee National Guard in serving youth. For the second year in a row, we offered Scouts the opportunity to earn merit badges in the skilled trades. The merit badges offered were Automotive Maintenance, Electricity, Plumbing, American Business, American Labor, Architecture, Home Repair, and Welding. 289 skilled trades focused merit badges were earned by Scouts. We are excited that our new Roy Grindstaff Skilled Trades Center will be open for 2023 summer camp at Boxwell. This facility will be the only free-standing building offering skilled trades merit badges at any Boy Scout Camp in the country. Other Councils have learned of this unique program and facility and are making plans to build their own facility. Summer Camp at Latimer Reservation continues to serve Scout Troops, Church Youth Groups and other campers looking for a unique outdoor high adventure experience. Currently 1,923 youth and leaders have camped at Latimer Reservation. Parish Reservation has welcomed 475 campers so far this year and Grimes Canoe Base has had 487 Scouts experience a canoe trek on the Buffalo River. We are proud of our Middle Tennessee Council Camps and want to provide more youth the opportunity to experience them. We are approaching our fall recruiting season and are excited to add more youth and families to the program. We all know that Scouting is “fun with a purpose”. All the unique experiences, merit badges and other fun things are our method for teaching service, citizenship, self-confidence, values and leadership. Statistics show that many youth in our society are experiencing a mental health crisis and Scouting programs are a proven way to build resilience and positive mental health attributes in youth. We need a strong Scouting program for the future of Middle Tennessee and our entire country. Thank you for giving your time, talent, and treasure in making these programs possible.

On Thursday, June 23 the Middle Tennessee Council held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Boxwell Scout Reservation to dedicate the new 100th Anniversary Veterans Gateway. The Gateway, built in honor of the Council’s 100th anniversary in 2020, recognizes veterans and those currently serving in the military who attended Boxwell as a Scout, leader, or staff member or who were registered leaders in the Council. Council President, Dr. John Bright Cage, served as Master of Ceremonies and thanked Jeff Collins of the Collins Family Trust of Portland, Tennessee for the generous gift made in honor of his parents, Larry and Wanda Collins, that made the building of the Gateway possible. He also recognized Rob Ponder of Ponder & Ponder Architects in Norcross, Georgia for the donation of the design of the Gateway. Mr. Ponder spent many summers at Boxwell as a youth and his experience inspired the design. Major General (retired) William Hickman chaired the effort to identify those to be honored and spoke at the event. He said, “As I link my Scouting experiences together with my military career – two words represents both - Values and Service. I am grateful that the Middle Tennessee Council is honoring our Veterans in this way. They are part of America’s finest – patriotic men and women that love their country, put service first over their own comfort and say “send me.” Staff Sergeant Anthony Warner, of the 101st Airborne Division’s 2nd Brigade Combat team who is also an Eagle Scout who attended Boxwell as a youth also spoke at the event. He said, “As a Scout I learned about different ways to lead, teach, and motivate those around me. At the time I didn’t realize the impact that Scouting was going to have on my life in the military, but I can now confidently say that I would not be the noncommissioned officer, leader, or mentor that my soldiers deserve had I not been in the scouting program.” In addition to the veterans’ recognition area, the Gateway will be an iconic structure at the entrance to the camp that will create memories that will last a lifetime for Scouts and leaders. It will also help secure the property when camp is not in session. The Middle Tennessee Council is proud to help set youth on a course to be good citizens and leaders in our country and to help those on their journey to serve.

The Middle Tennessee Council partnered with Sewanee University to conduct a National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) course on campus from July 17-22, 2022. NYLT was an exciting, six-day action-packed program designed to provide youth with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops and other situations demanding leadership of self and others. NYLT integrates the best of modern leadership theory with the traditional strengths of the Scouting experience. Through activities, presentations, challenges, discussions, and audio-visual support, approximately 36 NYLT participants were engaged in a unified approach to leadership that will give them the skill and confidence to lead well. Participants and staff camped on the grounds of the Stringer rugby field and used several facilities on the campus to conduct presentations. Three highlights for the participants were, they attended the Scouts Own Service in the Chapel of the Apostles, enjoyed two evening meals in the McClurg dining hall, and participated in an equestrian leadership session. They also had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the Sewanee community and become aware of all the Domain has to offer. Thank you to Scoutmaster, Michael Moore and his staff along with Nicky Hamilton, Chris Carlson, Nate Wilson, and Karine Gordy and the rest of the Sewanee Team that provided a memorable NYLT course that will be a Scouting experience highlight for all who were involved.

With the arrival of Fall and the influx of so many new and excited leaders, training becomes an essential ingredient in many good Scout conversations.

Youth Protection Training

Before an adult can even be a leader, they must first complete Youth Protection Training. YPT is the foundation of a solid leadership experience. It is simple to take YPT online, just browse on over to http://my.scouting.org, create an account, log in, click on the shield emblem on the right of the page, then just follow the instructions. The training will take about an hour and a half, but it is very informative and mandatory. YPT in person classroom trainings are also being held in every District by certified YPT trainers. Ask a member of your District Key 3 or Training Chair for more information.

Program and Position Specific Training

Once you have YPT under your belt, finishing your training is a breeze! Go back to my.scouting.org, but instead of clicking the shield, scroll down and find the red box that says “BSA Learn Center” and you will be whisked away to a magical land of training. Click on the program that you need training for (like Cub Scouts for instance), and then choose the role you play in the Pack. These trainings are meaty, but they do come in bite sized chunks of 7-10 minutes each, so you can do a quick training or two while waiting in the car line at your Scouts school, or whenever you have a few minutes to spare. These trainings are also available as an in-person classroom training within each District. Look for classroom trainings and more on our website at https://www.mtcbsa.org/CoursePrograms. The great benefit to classroom trainings are that you get to meet other new and experienced Scouters from other Units, and Scout friends are the best kind of friends!

Beyond the Basics

Once you have mastered the basic trainings feel free to browse around and check out some of the other trainings available. Before your Cub Scout Pack can go camping, some leaders need to be familiar with BALOO training, or Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation. This training will help you learn the basics of camping, such as how to eat, sleep, and stay dry in the wilderness! Part of this training is offered online, and part of it is in an outdoor classroom. For more information check our website, or ask a key member of your District. Another fun training event coming this Fall is the University of Scouting. At the UoS, you can enjoy many different supplemental fun trainings, such as Dutch oven cooking, or knot tying. There is something for everyone at the University of Scouting. UoS will be held on November 12 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Brentwood. Visit our website at https://www.mtcbsa.org/TrainingCourses/University-of-Scouting. Register Coming soon!

We are seeking nominations to be considered for “Scout of the Year”. Please visit our website at https://www.mtcbsa.org/scout-of-the-year to nominate a Scout that has demonstrated exceptional Scout spirit, leadership, heroism, community service or citizenship, either in his/her Scout unit or in personal life. We will select one Cub Scout, one Scouts BSA, one Venturing Youth, one STEM Scout and one Sea Scout/Explorer to represent the Council. Each youth must be registered in a pack, troop, crew, lab, ship or post within the Middle Tennessee Council at the time of nomination. Should you wish to nominate more than one Scout, please complete a separate entry by October 8, 2022. The Scouts of the Year will be featured throughout the entire 2022 Scouting year, including a video showcasing their accomplishments. These Scouts will be recognized at the annual Patron Luncheon on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 before an audience of 1,000 community and civic leaders, and they will also be presented in Jet Trails magazine, Scout Shorts online, and other MTCBSA publications.
