The mission of the Middle Tennessee Council, Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

Dear Friend of Scouting: 2020 was a tumultuous year, but the Middle Tennessee Council emerged from it stronger and more resolute in our commitment to provide the best experiences for young people of any youth serving organization in the country. We are blessed with outstanding leaders, volunteers, supporters and staff who work together to provide an exceptional foundation on which our Scouts, ages 5 – 21, can learn, grow and succeed. COVID-19 disrupted unit meetings and activities and cancelled traditional summer camp. Membership numbers were down due to the closure of schools, churches and other chartered organization locations. These challenges did not stop Council staff and volunteers from responding creatively with ways to keep youth engaged through new program delivery models such as Merit Badge Days at Boxwell and Cub Scouts at your Doorstep that were very successful. The Friends of Scouting Campaign raised $2,491,032 for the ongoing efforts of the Council to provide the highest quality programs to our youth. We are grateful to Jay Hollomon and all the district volunteers who made this effort a success. Council events continued to provide substantial support. We were able to hold the annual Clay Shoot before the pandemic restrictions took effect. Chaired again by Rick Archer, the event raised $75,898 and provided youth the opportunity to participate at one of the best shooting facilities in Middle Tennessee. The annual Extravaganza auction went live online in 2020 and was outstanding, raising $99,332, a record in the history of the event. We are grateful to Hank Ingram for his leadership. The Golf Classic raised $52,597 and was chaired by Eric Strickland. The Campaign for Boxwell Reservation continued its momentum with funds raised by December 31, 2020 totaling $6,474,496. New shower houses, Skilled Trades Center and the Boxwell Veterans Gateway in honor of the 100th Anniversary are all underway. We thank Harris Haston for continuing to lead this effort. 2020 marked the 100-year anniversary of the founding of the Middle Tennessee Council. Many of the special events that were planned throughout the year were moved to 2021. We look forward to holding the signature Jamboree at Boxwell over the weekend of September 24th. We hope to see you there. We are grateful for the participation of every member of our Scouting family and for the encouragement and support received in 2020. Sincerely,

MTC, BSA owns and operates four camping facilities: Parish Reservation at Rock Island, Grimes Canoe Base on the Buffalo River, Boxwell Reservation on Old Hickory Lake, Latimer Reservation on the Cumberland Plateau. Each camp provides a unique outdoor experience, but all offer opportunities for Scouts and families to explore, learn, have fun and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Programs to meet the COVID Challenge We hosted our first ever Virtual Campout. Scouts throughout the Council participated at home with fun STEM projects, cooking in Dutch ovens, tying knots, setting up tents and learning about GERMS. We reached over 10,000 people, had over 40,000 engagements on our posts and averaged 1,350 views per post. We created “Cub Scouts at Your Doorstep”, a virtual program for Cub Scouts and Cub Dayz at Boxwell. 1,019 Scouts participated in activities from home with materials and tutorial videos shipped to them and through a CDC compliant program at Boxwell. We created “Merit Badge Days”, a safe CDC compliant program offering for Scouts BSA youth. 1,934 Scouts came to Boxwell and earned merit badges through this program.

Traditional Camp Program followed CDC Guideline 1,659 Participants at Latimer year-round program. 1,672 Participants in Grimes Canoe Base float days.

As of December 31, 2020, the Campaign for Boxwell Reservations had secured $6,474,496 in gifts and pledges toward the $10.6 million goal. Due to restrictions brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, a decision was made to split out the maintenance reserve endowment portion of the original $12 million goal to be raised in a Phase II campaign. Even though traditional in-person summer camp had to be cancelled due to the pandemic, capital projects were not slowed down. w Two new shower houses have been completed and construction was begun in December 2020 on a third. w Construction on the new 100th Anniversary Gateway camp entrance was begun in December 2020. It will include an area to recognize veterans and current members of all branches of the United States Armed Forces who attended Boxwell as Scouts and leaders. w Funds were secured in 2020 to begin the construction of a new Skilled Trades Center that will be open for summer camp 2021 and will allow Scouts to earn merit badges in areas such as welding, automotive maintenance, welding and electricity. w Gifts and pledges continued to be received for the future demolition of the Stahlman Dining Hall that will be rebuilt as the Aubrey B. Harwell, Jr. Leadership Center at Camp Stahlman.

2020 Scouts of the Year

Many of our Scouts are today leading the nation, voyaging in space or working on the next scientific breakthrough. Most importantly, they are adults who learned valuable skills as Scouts and today are good citizens with high values. Each year, the Middle Tennessee Council selects local Scouts who have achieved something special or acted heroically. This year we are happy to announce the following four as our Scouts of the year.
