In Other News Xile has proved the springboard for many a successful career over the years and developments over the past few months look set to continue this trend. Former Xile manager Darren McGregor is now starring for St Mirren in the SPL having been transferred from newly promoted 1st division side Cowdenbeath in the summer. Big Daz has been a regular in the first time so far this season and judging from some of his fierce tackles we’re sure the opposition will be wishing he stayed in retail!

6

Former Into Xile model Harleen has also hit the limelight this year. Her shots for this prestigious mag were no doubt the deciding factor when Elle Macpherson picked her to appear on Britain’s Next Top Model. Unfortunately Harleen never won the prize but we’re sure she’ll pick up some great shoots as a result of the show.

Q: Tinchy Stryder’s a pretty unusual name, where does it come from? Tinchy because im small and Stryder comes from one of my favourite computer games when I was younger. Q: You’ve enjoyed amazing success since your debut album Star In The Hood was released in 2007. What’s been the highlight of your career so far? My first number 1 with “Number 1” was definitely my highlight. Q: How did you break through in such a competitive industry? Have you had to make your sound more commercial in order to succeed? I broke through because of hard work and talent! I make music I like and that seems to have crossed over luckily I guess!

TOP

Q: You hit number 1 with N-Dubz. Have you seen their reality TV show, is it something you’d ever consider doing? I really like their show and N-Dubz deserve all their success. If the right idea came along for a show I would definitely consider it. Q: What’s the story behind your clothing line Star In The Hood? Me and my managers set up Star In The Hood clothing in 2007, around the same time as I released my debut album, which was also called Star In The Hood! I’ve always loved fashion and we thought we could link both and it seems to be working!

Bling Classic t-shirt £45 (8135)

Q: What do you think of TV talent shows? If you hadn’t already broken through would you consider appearing on one? I don’t have a problem with them. Simon Cowell is the best in this industry and you can’t knock him. I would never appear on one though.

Q: How active a role do you take in the design of SITH product? I take a very active role and make sure i’m in all the design meetings. Q: How do you see the brand developing in the next few seasons? Star In The Hood will hopefully continue to be stylish and become bigger and bigger through the next few seasons in terms of the garments we have in our collections. I’m really excited with how it’s all developing.

Q: What are your top 5 hip-hop albums of all time? Jay-Z, The Blueprint The Notorious B.I.G, Ready to Die Dizzee Rascal, Boy in the Corner Nas, Illmatic Jay Z, The Blueprint 3.

Buyers guide Buyers guide

The one thing that we can say for sure is that Edinburgh certainly experience’s the full wrath of the British winter. It’s all too easy to conjure up an eternal list of negatives about the season but let’s stay positive and look at the better aspects of the bitter winter months.

G-Star Cabin Asper mix boot £140 (8953)

The best thing about winter is the change of clothing. I love diggin’ through my wardrobe and finding the cozy knits and jackets I’d forgotten all about! My footwear selection also has an overhaul at this time of year. It’s out with flimsy canvas sneaks and in with chunky boots and classic leather kicks! First thing’s first though, you need to organise some decent socks. I would recommend picking up a pair of Burlington cotton check socks, these bad boys have a great pattern and will last you for years. Fresh underwear is a must as well, nothing beats the feeling of putting on brand new socks and boxers... They make great stocking fillers as well, check out the G-Star boxer shorts for a selection of totally hassle free gifts!

G-Star Correct Line City Jacket £255 (8567)

You can find a fantastic selection of shoes this season; there is such a variety of styles and colours to choose from. Footwear can make or break your outfit so don‘t be tempted to scrimp here! My advice is to buy a pair of quality leather boots to see you through the wet days ahead. You don’t need me to tell you that the military boot is back in a big way this season. Everyone’s wearing them from trendsetters such as Beckham to the badly styled X-Factor wannabe’s. A word of advice would be NOT to tuck your jeans into your boots, this looks utterly ridiculous and marks you out as a walking fashion disaster. Check how JLS rock them and make sure you don‘t follow suit. Keep it simple and subtle; let the design do the talkin‘ and whatever you do, don‘t tuck them in! G-Star Arc Height Jean £280 (8653)

Replay Clutch Boot £140 (9044)

It is so important to get the right style of denims if you‘re going to look hot this winter. Throughout Xile, G-Star and Replay we’ve got an unbelievable selection of jeans, for a hand choosing your ideal style turn to our denim guide on p36. My advice would be to try a different style this fall. I know loads of older consumers are stuck in their ways and still swear by the boot cut, take my advice guys this style has had its day! The key fit for A/W 10 is a slim or tapered denim. You don’t need to have legs like Mick Jagger to pull this look off though. Replay, Diesel and G-Star all have beautiful straight legged jeans in a relaxed fit! Another great alternative would be the PRPS Baracuda which is a little wider at the ankle, a great stepping stone from boot cut flares! For the trend setters out there the key Christmas jean has to be the G-Star Raw Essentials Arc Pant. This highly structured style is bang on trend and benefits from the use of amazing denim. Each pair are made by hand so you know you’re getting a great quality product.

Highbury Knitted Cardigan £310 (8370)

G-Star continues to move away from overtly commercial design to a more fashion forward look. The Correct Line and Raw Essentials collections offer a taste of G-Star’s catwalk styling and replace bold branding with more subtle design twists. Stay ahead of the pack in A/W 10 and opt for G-Star’s high end pieces in bold colourways, classic herringbone and quality denim. If it’s bold, stylised pieces you’re after fear not! G-Star has refined the basic collection and combined the usual bold branding and strong colourways with a range of on trend fits and styles.

LAUNCH PARTY XILE GLASGOW It’s been a whirlwind 6 months since we opened the doors of Xile’s flagship Glasgow store. The custom built unit in the New St Enoch Walkway has quickly established itself as a key destination for Glasgow’s style conscious consumers and has built up a cult following already. We’re only 2 minutes from Buchanan Street so make sure you visit our great new unit next time you’re heading west! If you’ve not checked out the store yet, then frankly you’re missing a trick! The sleek shopfit perfectly showcases our collection of cutting edge designer wear. We’ve got a huge selection of Luke, Pretty Green, Diesel, Adidas and Replay on offer. Each brand has a specially designed area within the store to help make your shopping experience as hassle free as possible. The friendly staff are there to help so if you’ve got any questions about fit, colour or size they’ll be happy to help. The opening party for the new store seems like forever ago! Big thanks to all the brands who helped make our launch night instore and at Glasgow’s exclusive Club Milan such a big success! Hummel supplied a street graffiti team who sprayed our logo all over the city centre (in biodegradable chalk we hasten to add). The guys had a few close brushes with the law but thankfully once we explained that we weren’t using real paint they let us off. Hummel also teamed up with Glasgow’s premier break dancing crew, The Flyin’ Jalepeno’s, and put on an amazing live show. Replay brought a few Polaroid photographers to the event and were giving away party snaps all night to the delight of the girls! Tunes were provided by Yogi Haughton and the legendary Marshall Jefferson with sax accompaniment from SaxSingh!

Jarpah Hooded Jacket £185 (8864)

55DSL is a groundbreaking lifestyle brand which expertly fuses urban elements into a fashion forward collection. The brand was founded in 1994 as an experimental Diesel spin off but has grown to be considered a major label in its own right. The brand’s bold and often provocative design ethos guarantees a fresh and innovative collection each season.

Alongside the 55 mainline collection Xile is proud to present the ultra limited edition 10:55 series. This niche collection sees the brand’s design team collaborate with internationally renowned photographers to great effect. The artists are given a blank canvas to customize classic T’s with their imagery and the unique results speak for themselves. As only 1055 pieces of each design are produced these T’s seem sure to become collector’s items in years to come. The best designs from the 10:55 series are showcased online at Xile this fall. We’ve opted for a bold print from Gavin Watson who received critical acclaim for his gritty photo’s of mods & skins. His work has attracted praise from This Is England director Shane Meadows and perfectly captures the grim reality of 80’s Britain. Our other featured T is by Milan based design team DiedLastNight. Their groundbreaking website features unconventional images from the Milanese underground and showcases breaking trends and unique looks.

Adolf ‘Adi’ Dassler began producing sports shoes in his family’s home in Herzogenaurach, Germany. Years later his brother Rudi Dassler joined the business which became known as Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik (Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory) By the 1936 Berlin Olympics Adi Dassler drove across Germany to the Olympic village with a suitcase full of spikes and persuaded United States sprinter Jesse Owens to use them in the first ever sponsorship for an African-American. After Owens won four gold medals, his success cemented the reputation of Dassler shoes amongst the world’s sporting elite. After an acrimonious split in 1947 Rudi left the company to form a new label called Ruda which was later renamed Puma. Adi kept control of the brother’s initial brand and re-christened it Adidas. The rest is history! This winter sees Adidas pay homage to its classic designs. One key element of the collection is the re-released football icon tracktops from Adi’s home town of Herzogenaurach. These limited edition versions have been age worn and specially treated to give them a vintage texture and feature a range of retro inspired branding. Winter also sees the welcome return of the Beckenbauer track top which puts a modern twist on the 1973 Adidas original with a new graphic print across the chest. The Vespa range also continues to go from strength to strength. The Super Track Top combines a 70’s classic feel with vintage vespa graphics for a great sportsfashion feel.

Into Xile meets Graham Kerr: Trainer Spotter More commonly known as Kerso: A 43 years old trainer fiend from Bellshill. His passion for trainers began in 1978 when he bought a pair of Adidas Jogger. Clothes-wise it was 1983 when the Casual style kicked off in Motherwell. Nowadays he runs his own label – A Healthy Obsession – and curates the collectors website www.ahealthyobsession.com. Q: You’re renowned for having one of the biggest clothing and footwear collections in the UK? What exactly does your legendary wardrobe have in it? Pretty much every pair of trainers and items of clothing I’ve worn since 1983 or thereabouts. I’ve never regarded it as a collection as such, it’s simply my day to day wardrobe. Luckily enough I’m still the same size as I was almost 30 years ago so all the items can be, and are, worn. To be honest I don’t have any idea how many items of clothing there are – counting them is not something I’ve ever needed to do. Trainer-wise, when I was moving them into boxes I reached 700 before I stopped counting. Q:What are your favourite brands? Over the years I’ve always had a soft spot for Best Company – the quality and detail of the sweatshirts in particular is amazing. Overall though I’d have to say that any label Massimo Osti designed for would be my favourites – the guy was a genius and labels like the early years of Stone Island, CP Company and Boneville along with Osti Productions, Left Hand, the ICD range and ST95 amongst others are testament to this. Q: Adidas sneaks form the cornerstone of your collection; what are the rarest pieces you own?

52

It’s difficult to tell – it’s impossible to say with any authority that only a certain number of any particular pair of trainers exist. All you can do is base it on what are known to be out there. For example – I have a pair of Adidas Cord and for many years many people doubted the actual existence of these trainers. All we had to go on was the image of them from an adidas catalogue from 1979. Then, 7 or 8 years ago I received an e-mail asking if I would be interested in a pair (thankfully in my size). Since then another 2 pairs have turned up so we’ve gone from none, to one, to three pairs in circulation – so who knows just how rare they are? Not that it matters, at the end of the day they’re still a stunning shoe, rare or not. Q: Where do you source your gear? Any tips for aspiring collectors? Nowadays I’m pretty lucky in that I know a good few people whose business it is to source trainers or clothes and if they come across anything they think I’ll be interested in they get in touch with me direct. The best tip I can give is to try and get to know the vintage dealers, let them know what you’re looking for and, with a bit of luck, they’ll be able to do the searching for you. Q: What’s your most extravagant footwear purchase? I’ve always made a point of not paying stupid money for any pair

of trainers, in fact I can count on the fingers of one hand the amount of times I’ve gone into 3 figures for a pair. The most I’ve ever paid is £250 for a pair of deadstock Diadora Bjorn Borg Elites but even these were funded by the sale of a second-hand pair of the same shoes I had for £200. Q: Are there any fashion disasters in there that you’d like to forget about? To be honest I’m struggling to think of any! I’m sure there are plenty of items in my wardrobe that other people may regard as disasters but to me they’re just another part of my taste in clothes. Q: In your opinion what are the top 5 Adidas sneaks ever? Ah – this one always kills me! Ask me this question 10 times and you’ll get 10 different answers – there are so many to choose from, it’s really difficult to give a definitive list. Off the top of my head – 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Y3 has come a long way since the labels inception in 2003. A/W 10 sees the collection take on a futuristic feel with bold combinations of colour and texture making these kicks truly unique. The infrared sneaks personify this style with chunky soles and ultra futuristic three stripe detailing That said the classic styles have also been given a well received overhaul. The boxing trainer is presented in a painfully trendy deep purple while the Sala deconstructs the traditional white sneaker to great effect.

XILE NEW MUSIC SPECIAL

The 10:04’s broke onto the Scottish music scene in early 2009 and have quickly established themselves as a tremendous live band with verve and energy to spare! The Edinburgh based four piece are now veterans of the local gig circuit and have a dedicated fan base who go out of their way to catch every show. Their riotous dose of punk tinged indie with lashings of britpop makes for a tremendous gig and the boys undoubted stage presence doesn’t hurt either! Despite predictable influences such as The Clash and The Cribs these guys have original and quirky tracks which keep their set brimming over with an often infectious energy. The subtle blend of pop and punk provides a polished sound made all the better by top notch riffs played at an obscene volume. The 10:04’s put their all into every stage performance and it’s no surprise that The List reckons “they’ll be taking their post Libertines punk racket down to London soon enough”. With recent support gigs for The View & Idlewild it looks certain to happen sooner rather than later. Make sure you catch one of their electric sets before they make the move down south. If the initial buzz around their debut single (produced by Tony Doogan of Belle & Sebastian fame) is to be believed these guys are destined for the big time! www.myspace.com/the1004s

Formed midway through 2006, The Black Hand Gang are finally getting the recognition they deserve. For many bands four years struggling to ‘break through’ can prove too heavy a burden; however this is not the case for The Black Hand Gang. It’s clear after just one listen to the Glasgow based four piece’s self- titled Debut EP that have taken this time to perfect their unique sound of powerfully driven country-blues rock. Their sound rests somewhere between Kings of Leon and Band of Horses and the lyrics perfectly encapsulate the frustrations of innercity life. The vocals are beautifully delivered with a sense of fragile vulnerability. The BHG won over the notoriously fickle Glaswegian indie crowd with their propulsive sound and sell out gigs at Nice and Sleazy’s and King Tut’s . Their ascent was confirmed by their appearance at a massive gig in front of 10,000 people as part of the Glasgow New Year celebrations in George Square. http://www.myspace.com/theblackhandganguk

XILE NEW MUSIC SPECIAL Lightguides This Glasgow based trio have been burning a trail across Scotland on their recent tour and developing an already impressive fan base. Fresh from a standout performance on the T-Break stage the lads have taken time out to craft more of their uplifting songs which expertly blend poignant lyrics and melody with some powerful guitar work. Since releasing debut EP “Past and Present” in February doors have been flying open all across the country and their live session for BBC Radio’s Vic Galloway show was truly impressive. The band’s unusual sound has a unique feel that reeks of American punk with an experimental twist. The well crafted tunes are aided and abetted at all times by the staccato delivery of the lyrics. Debut single “The Casting Call” shows true potential as the near capacity crowd from their King Tut’s headline gig would attest. Look out for a new release any day soon! www.myspace.com/lightguides

Stevie & The Moon Those of you who have heard Stevie & The Moon’s debut EP “These Old Traditions” will need little introduction to the singer/songwriter’s considerable talent. His lush vocals and ambient melodies build into beautifully crafted tunes awash with glorious highs. His lyrics are second to none delivered in a style reminiscent of Glasvegas’ James Allen. Watch out for updates on the myspace as the guys are touring with some great new tracks at the moment. Stevie has come a long way since his surprise gig on the TITP Futures Stage and the recent gig supporting Pearl & The Puppets showed a polished and professional edge. Expect big things in 2011 from this hotly tipped act! http://www.myspace.com/stevieandthemoon
