Planning 101 HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT VENUE FOR
YOUR EVENT
By B. Allan Kurtz
W
hen it’s time to plan your simcha, the first step is usually finding the right venue for your specific event. Traditionally, Bar and Bat Mitzvah clients tend to get the earliest jump. There are temple and school calendars to reserve, and the competition is fierce, so you want to make sure you get your son or daughter’s name on that list. For brides, the traditional rule of thumb is one calendar year, if you want to secure the perfect date. Now that you know when to reserve your space, the next question is where. The prevailing rules of real estate apply to venues as well, location, location, location. The venue should be easily accessible for your guests, offer valet parking, and be able to accommodate for Bar/Bat Mitzvah bus dropoffs. Ask if the venue offers separate areas for cocktail hour, and the dinner dance. For Bar/ Bat Mitzvahs, it’s best to find a venue that can offer separate rooms for adult and young adult cocktail/ “coketail” receptions. Let’s face it, the kids want to run around and play games, without their parents standing watch over them, and the adults want to socialize without a bunch of overly energetic, sugar charged kids running around, (although a few vagrant adults can almost always be found crashing the kids buffet, loading up on hot dogs, burgers and mac and cheese). Once it’s time for the guests to be invited to dinner, there should be one central ballroom where they can gather to dine and dance, watch the video montage and candle lighting ceremony. 22 | CHAGIGAH MAGAZINE
When finding your perfect wedding venue, again, you want to make sure there is a space for your guests to enjoy cocktails separate from the dinner/dance. Some venues have sectioned off corridors or lobbies. This can work, provided you have ample space to accommodate all your guests, food stations and bars. Does the ballroom have ample space for your guests, band and dance floor? Is there a bridal suite on site?
Of course, after location, the next most important consideration is price. Everyone is budget conscious these days, and most wedding venues have adapted to the changing economic climate as well. Ask what is included in your quote. Does it include coat check, lounge attendants, linens, equipment and cleanup charges? If you are not set on a specific or fixed date, ask about price saving dates. Many top spaces will be negotiable during certain seasons, (i.e. summer and winter), or during holiday weeks (Thanksgiving, Christmas etc). Many halls that specialize in social events, will
offer significant discounts if you are flexible, and willing to have your wedding on a weeknight. This rule of thumb applies more to venues outside of Manhattan. In the city, most venues that book social events on the weekend are busy during the week hosting corporate and non-profit events. Fridays and Sundays are almost always available at a reduced rate from Saturday. The third element you want to achieve is the “wow” factor. Even on a budget, this is the most important night in a bride, or Bar/Bat Mitzvah child’s life. You want your guests to walk away from the evening feeling that your event was more special than the dozen or so events they attended this year. It’s best to find a venue that does not have any exposed pipes, exposed brick walls, or open back of the house areas, which would require additional expenditures, budgeted toward “hiding” these areas, unless you are seeking that specific look. Try to find a space that offers enough beauty that you don’t have to create the entire look by yourself. Décor should accent the venues unique characteristics, not necessarily be the primary source of your “look”. Enjoy the moment and have fun!

Wedding of Michelle Katz & Jeffrey Rappaport
T
he most anticipated wedding of the year finally took place at the most coveted venue of New York City. Michelle Katz and Jeffrey Rappaport walked down the aisle at the magnificent Plaza Hotel. They exchanged vows in majestic style under the opulent canopy of the Plaza’s Grand Ballroom. The wedding was completely packed to capacity with friends and family. Many of the guests described the evening as a “dream” and marveled at how every detail was planned to perfection. The decorations were impeccable, and everything was perfectly styled 24 | CHAGIGAH MAGAZINE

Vandal roses. The chuppah was blanketed by stunning white peonies. Michelle’s bouquet was designed with white Vandal roses mixed with white peonies to compliment the decor. Exceptional lighting was provided by Bentley Meeker, which utilized only the best in leading-edge technology and design—along with its expertise in theater—to bring the romantic sparkle of a clear evening sky to the indoor space. The vaulted ceiling was illuminated by a crystal chandelier decorated with white peonies, white hydrangeas and white Vandal roses, and mirrored-glass shades covered each table centerpiece, helping to make light dance across the space. Ghost chairs surrounded

each table, allowing the elegance of the decoration to shine through. Guests enjoyed contemporary entertainment performed by Harris Lank of Hank Lane Music and Productions. In addition, for Jewish and Israeli dancing, the renowned Neshoma Orchestra gave a moving performance. The bands combined to provide a non-stop rhythm all night, and each brought partygoers to their feet for joyous dancing throughout the evening. It was a celebration to remember for all who had the honor to revel with the new couple. Photography by Fred Marcus

Wedding of Daniela Gurevich & Michael Abittan
Daniela Gurevich and Michael Abittan’s wedding celebration occurred at the beautiful and regal Rockleigh Country Club in Rockleigh, N.J. The ceremony took place surrounded by a magical atmosphere at twilight, thanks to Ike Walkover’s orchestral masterpieces, and Tamara of Aramat Events’ vision of white orchids, cream colored hydrangeas and sheer white fabric draping the outdoor chuppah. Daniela wore an organza Monique Lhullier gown accented with a sash and crystals, and Michael donned a classic Valentino tuxedo with a modern twist. With close to 500 guests from all over the world, including family from Israel and France as well as members of the royal family of Morocco, Daniela and Michael could only trust Foremost-RAM to cater this monumental occasion in their lives. The couple’s vision of a perfect party was to spoil their guests with great food, entertainment and memories that would last a lifetime. 30 | CHAGIGAH MAGAZINE
Guests entered the ballroom decked out in an amazing floral decor of white orchids and white hydrangeas in tall crystal vases. Tamara of Aramat Events used gold overlays, crystals, candles and lighting to intensify the romantic vibe the couple aimed for at the celebration. Guests were kept on their feet all night with an eclectic mix of music by Ike Walkover, including Middle Eastern, classic disco, jazz and dance, often accompanied with live bongos. With an afterparty following the ballroom celebration, an array of scrumptious food and desserts were passed around by the butlers, and guests were surprised with custom cocktails and even a cigar roller on hand. The Abittan wedding was certainly an unforgettable celebration for both family and friends. The couple was grateful to everyone who made it such a special and memorable night in their lives. Wedding of Nadine Karmily & Nikan Hakimian
M
emorial Day, a day that is a standard day of remembrance for the rest of the country, has turned out to be a blessed day for the Hakimian and Karmily families. Nadine Karmily and Nikan Hakimian were formally engaged on Memorial Day 2008, and held a stunning wedding for the ages on Memorial Eve 2009. The wedding celebration was held on May 24th at Scott Morrell’s upscale catering hall, Woodbury Jewish Center, in Woodbury, N.Y. Morrell did not disappoint, as the delicious fine dining prepared that evening received endless rave reviews from the 700 guests in attendance. Woodbury’s butlers, clad in white jackets and sashes, provided an extra spark to the festivities with their continuous flowing assortment of appetizing refreshments. Andy Madadian,

the “Persian King of Pop,” lived up to his name all night while playing a vast array of his worldrenowned music of the past two decades. Nadine was sparkling in her Ulla-Maija wedding gown, while Nikan wore a stylish white tuxedo blazer custom tailored by Gai Gohari of Astor & Black. His trend-setting outfit was inspired after the 2008 Justin Timberlake magazine cover of “Fashion Rocks”. The ceremony was breathtaking, with Nikan blowing several kisses to the sky above thanking G-d and his late father Darab for making this night so special. All eyes were glued to the two 52-inch plasma TV screens throughout each intense second of the ceremony. Saleh Maghrebi executed numerous scintillating songs on the violin that entertained the crowd tremendously. The ballroom was dressed by Adrian Benitez of Metro Floral Decorators with an
abundant assortment of yellow and orange roses, hydrangeas and orchids on display. As if that was not sufficient enough, Metro also provided an extra sharp glow for the entire ballroom with its classic LED lighting. The elaborate video and photography were performed by Studio Flash of Great Neck. Bobby and Fred Farokhzad’s countless years of expertise helped capture every magical moment from beginning to end. Video was taken on a top-quality crane, which enhanced the visual memories of the soiree. The groom’s elder brother Ivan gave a warm toast to the bride and groom thanking G-d for making their marriage become a reality, generating a rich applause from the audience. The endless memories from this glorious occasion were all made possible due to the helping hands of the bride and groom’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Shokrollah Karmily and Mrs. Jila Hakimian. Both families extend their gratitude to their relatives who flew in from London, Italy and Israel to celebrate the joyous occasion with them. Nadine and Nikan would like to thank everyone for making their wedding celebration a phenomenal one.

Greenfield Speaks Out At Harvard Club for Yeshiva Parents
By Sara Schwartz
L
ast month, David G. Greenfield, Esq., the founding director and counsel of TEACH NYS, spoke persuasively in support of education tax credits at a conference on school choice sponsored by the Manhattan Institute for Policy and Research and the Foundation for Education Reform and Accountability at the Harvard Club in Manhattan. The conference, attended by a who’s who of high level state and education policy leaders including New York State Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith and New York State Chancellor Merryl Tisch, focused on education reform, special education vouchers, charter schools and education tax credits - all ideas that would improve the quality of education in New York State. Greenfield used this unique opportunity with these renowned leaders to press the cause of yeshiva parents - so many of who are struggling to pay yeshiva tuition. Greenfield is widely admired as an expert in education policy. He is a mayoral appointee to the prestigious New York City Department of Education Non-Public School Standing

Committee. As a member of the committee, Greenfield plays a critical role in addressing important issues affecting the more than 500,000 of New York’s children who attend non-public schools and advocates vigorously on their behalf. Most recently, Greenfield worked with the Committee to ensure that tens of thousands of yeshiva students receive free tutoring services worth tens of millions of dollars each year.
Greenfield is one of only a handful of New Yorkers who can speak from personal experience about the fight to obtain education tax credits in New York State. Greenfield formed TEACH NYS - an umbrella group that advocates on behalf of the 500,000 children in private schools in New York. Recognizing that rising tuition costs are causing many parents to struggle with the challenge of paying for yeshiva, TEACH NYS has
fought hard to lessen the tuition burden on yeshiva parents. To that end, TEACH NYS is the only organization that has dedicated itself exclusively to solving the tuition crisis. Greenfield, one of only five speakers at the conference, was the lead political strategist in the 2006 battle to secure education tax credits in New York. After lengthy negotiations that year, the result was a $600 million tax credit for parents of school age children. Because of TEACH NYS, millions of parents of school age children now receive up to $330 per child, per year, in the form of a direct tax credit on their New York State tax bill. Greenfield spoke eloquently about the need to continue fighting on behalf of tuition paying parents for Education Tax Credits which would lessen the cost of yeshiva tuition. He closed his remarks by noting that “education tax credits are an affordable, effective and constitutional way to leverage the resources of New York State to benefit all of New York’s children.”

abrielle Fisher’s Royal Gala Bat Mitzvah took place on May 25 at the Garden City Hotel, in Garden City, N.Y. Each detail of Gabrielle’s Bat Mitzvah was planned and designed by her mother Shully Fisher using the finest and most talented people to exceed anybody’s expectation. It started with the handmade silk fabric invitations provided by Linda Rosenbaum of Individually Yours. The Rotunda room at the entrance to the Garden City Hotel was transformed into a majestic garden by Adrian of Metro Floral Decorators. Gabrielle’s friends and family were entertained by Deidre of CoCo Party Entertainment with a virtual rollercoaster, assorted games, photo station and hand-carved clay ornaments. The ballroom was decorated by Metro Floral Decorators with three different flower centerpieces, each a work of art and some of the most dazzling flower displays ever seen by the guests. The kids’ tables were decorated by Sandra of Dalmazio, starting with a magical canopy made of royal velvet which surrounded Gabrielle’s gold throne and a candelabra covered with royal velvet fabric, pillow, scepter and a crown with Swarovski crystal on each table. Adrian also provided magical lighting in the ballroom to further intensify the rich color combinations of lavender and pink, and each guest was greeted at their table with a Pianese flower. The montage, which was a royal documentary of Gabrielle’s life, was created and produced by Lenny Manzo Productions. Wedding of Lindsay Smilow & Jason Eisenman
E
ven though they were acquaintances in high school, Lindsay Smilow and Jason Eisenman were reintroduced by a mutual friend, Adam Karhu, in early 2005. Three years later—and after many visits by Jason from New York to the University of Maryland where Lindsay was studying—the two were engaged. The couple decided to get engaged on the four-hour drive home from a family wedding in Baltimore. They surprised their families at each of their homes at midnight on Jan. 6, 2008, and announced their engagement. The year-long engagement was just enough time to prepare for the kind of wedding Lindsay and Jason had hoped for. The Westmount Country Club in West Paterson, N.J., was a perfect fit with its wedding aesthetic—modern but traditional, grand but intimate, formal yet still fun and exciting. The decor of the Westmount completely captured Lindsay and Jason’s vision of an ultramodern wedding with a bit of old world flair. Phillip Samut from Pedestals Floral Decorators was instrumental in creating a couture and colorful look for the affair. Blue orchids, purple stock and green lilies accompanied by peacock feathers, silver willow branches and crystal accoutrements magnificently accented the already striking venue. The bridal party wore gowns of chiffon in a variety of jewel tones and Lindsay wore an art deco-inspired Reem Acra gown and carried a bouquet of jeweled white flowers and ostrich feathers held together with a vintage brooch. Jason wore a custom tuxedo with purple satin lining accented by a white-on-white paisley skinny tie. It was 60 degrees on Dec. 28, 2008, and the couple took many pictures on the stunning grounds of the Westmount. David

Conn and Hy Goldberg of Visions Fine Photography not only created artful compositions with their camera lenses but made sure that the couple enjoyed the photography process as well as the product. The traditional orthodox ceremony was injected with an egalitarian spin as Jason and Lindsay were both greeted and blessed at the Badeken, both signed the English addendum to their Ketubah and exchanged wedding rings, as a token of mutual responsibility, in the yichud room. Rabbi Elie Weissman from the Young Israel of Plainview (New York) officiated the ceremony and Jason and Lindsay’s uncles and grandfathers recited six of the seven blessings. The seventh and most honorable blessing was recited by Lindsay’s brother, Joshua Smilow. Jason and Lindsay lit the Chanukah candles and publicly enacted their first mitzvah together as a married couple. The communities of Plainview and West Hempstead, N.Y., danced the night away to the sweet music of Neginah Orchestra and the voice of Yummi Lowey. Guests dined on a beautifully plated duet of Chateubriand and chicken breast with creamy polenta, artichokes, tomatoes, potato batons and haricot verts followed by three mini ramekins of molten chocolate cake, homemade apple crisp and chocolate banana pudding prepared by Main Event Caterers.
Marty Bodner of Main Event managed the event to perfection, from the elaborately arranged cocktail hour down to the flawlessly stacked blue and green cupcake wedding cake. With blue teeth from their shared cupcake, Jason and Lindsay lip-synched and danced to their favorite song, “Meaning,” and Neginah
orchestras turned up the volume with songs by Bon Jovi, Dave Mathews Band and even Rihanna as guests let loose on the dance floor. It was a night to remember for Judy and Alvin Smilow, Judi and Alan Eisenman—and especially for Lindsay and Jason. Visions Fine Photography

Wedding of Jessica Deil & Eddie Aziz
J
essica Deil and Eddie Aziz were introduced by a mutual family friend in December 2007. Jessica was from small town outside of Milan, Italy, compared to Eddie being raised in New York City. Not knowing what to expect from their first date, the night of December, 20 that year turned out to be just a magical evening. After a few more dates Jessica went back to Italy. Shortly thereafter, Eddie surprised Jessica not once, not twice, but three between March and July 2008 to visit Jessica and meet her family and friends. Jessica came back to New York in the fall and Eddie surprised her once again by proposing to her on the afternoon of Oct. 5, 2008, in the wonderful and famous Les Marais restaurant. Shortly thereafter the couple celebrated with

an engagement party both in New York and another one in Italy.
After several months of extensive wedding planning, the incredible evening of March 5, 2009 finally arrived. Guests from all over the world: Italy, Israel, London, France and Brazil: flew in to join this beautiful couple as they began to spend the rest of their lives together. Jessica wore a beautiful Italian-designed (of course!) wedding dress while Eddie was dressed head to toe in custom made clothing by Astor & Black. Guests danced the night away until the early hours of the morning in the Huntington Hilton (New York) being entertained by the wonderful voice of Avi Perets and his very talented Ouri Bitan Orchestra, but also the one and only DJs Alex and Amir. The main hall and chuppah were beautifully decorated by Kings Point Florists, the event was catered by Lederman Caterers and all the memories were made to last by Hollywood Photo & Video. This memorable evening will be remembered by all for a very long time. Photography by MKpics

Wedding of Elana Soleimani & David Aminoff
S
unday, March 1 was a night that most New Yorkers will never forget. For most it was due to record-breaking snowfall, as winter left us with a bang and almost a foot of snow. But for a select few it was because they were guests at the wedding of Elana Soleimani and David Aminoff, held at the lovely Woodbury Jewish Center in Woodbury, N.Y., catered by Morrell Caterers. Upon entering the venue, guests were presented with flower arrangements by Metro Floral Decorators, the likes of which had never been seen before. As the simcha was days away from Purim, a huge magenta and white flowered mask adorned the place card table, and an archway designed out of branches and bedecked with smaller masks, crystals and peacock feathers led guests through the hallway to the cocktail hour where human statues presented specialty drinks on silver platters. The cocktail hour was described by some as “the best we have ever been to.” Elana enjoys a passion for food and spent countless hours creating a unique menu, including new and neverbefore-seen dishes, just for this special day: a one-of-a-kind Shepard’s Pie and salad duet appetizer plate and newly created warm chocolate chip cake plated dessert, just for a few examples. In addition to the spectacular food, the wedding was unique in that it was truly a joining of two separate cultures, not just families, into one. David, originally from Queens, N.Y., and now a resident of Great Neck, N.Y., comes from a Sephardic background, while Elana, also from Great Neck, enjoys a mixed background of both Sephardic and Ashkenazi traditions. Therefore, the festivities began with a tisch for the men in one room and the traditional kabbalat panim for the 58 | CHAGIGAH MAGAZINE
women in another. Afterwards, David was danced in to greet Elana with the musical accompaniment of renowned chazzan and singer Avi Perets and the Ouri Bittan Orchestra. Both David and Elana received blessings from their fathers and Elana’s grandfather, followed by the traditional wedding ceremony. The chuppah, designed by Elana in conjunction with Adrian of Metro Floral Decorators, was round and suspended from the ceiling, covered with a white flowing fabric canopy and white and blush flowers and hanging crystals. The backdrop of the chuppah was the same
flowing white fabric, piped, draped and adorned with hanging crystals and small LED lights. The ceremony was officiated by Rabbi Eliyahu BenHaim and Rabbi Dale Polakoff. It was truly a spiritual event—when Avi Perets sang and David walked down the aisle to receive his future wife, there was not a dry eye in the house. After the ceremony the party went on well into the night with much dancing and fanfare. The entire event was captured by the photographic artists and videographers from Jovan Studios. It was an unforgettable evening. Photography by JoVon

Oheka Castle...A Fairy Tale By Maureen Seaberg
O
heka Castle is not only a monument to the banking success of financier and arts patron Otto Hermann Kahn, it is a testament to his triumph over anti-Semitism. Kahn built the second-largest private residence in the United States on the North Shore of Long Island in New York, now renovated and home to the creme de la creme of weddings and other special events, when he and his family were not accepted in their previous hometown of Morristown, N.J. because they were Jewish. Kahn was even banned from the train in that town running to Manhattan, dubbed, "The Millionaires Express" due to its many well-heeled riders, because of his heritage. Mr. Kahn built the immense 1919 residence, just 31 miles West of Midtown Manhattan, as a summer home and weekend retreat for his wife, Addie and four children.
"The beauty of outdoor and indoor, the history and the class of the entire place,...
After four years of construction, the Kahns would go on to entertain luminaries of the day including Charlie Chaplin, Enrico Caruso and heads of state within its walls. Well, Mr. Kahn would - his wife ended up finding the partying a bit wearying after too many pretty starlets caught her husband's eye. The man who could not fit in to his previous community was now a quintessential host and touted as the "King of New York" by Will Rogers.
Dalia Baratian, an event planner and designer who has done several events at Oheka, helps guests feel like Kings and Queens of New York. Not only has she done many stunning events at the castle, she booked her own son's bar mitzvah at the historic estate.
"I am an event planner and designer," she explained. "I do search around for venues, and found Oheka to be one of the best for all occasions. Her business is Soiree Signature Designs, 450 7th Ave, Suite 2206, New York, N.Y 10038, (516) 343-0982. "The beauty of outdoor and indoor, the history and the class of the entire place, the privacy, the size and shape of the rooms, the furniture, only one event at a time, the service, the staff and the one of a kind hospitality all make me recommend it. "I have and still will recommend this venue to all my clients as well as friends and family, AndrĂŠ Maier photography especially since I have proven over and over that Oheka is not only the best venue for weddings but it is a formidable place for other occasions, from luncheons to bar mitzvahs..." In the case of her son's bar mitzvah, she illuminated the gates and the rest of the building in red light, "which looked great and warm for the month of February. "The most unique thing about this event was that I was able to bring a modern masculine look in the most traditional castle and it not only did not clash, but looked exceptionally beautiful and different. And of course when Bryan the bar mitzvah boy stood on the stage and played the guitar and surprised the guests with the most popular songs of the 70's and some 80's. "This is one of the rare venues that a designer would not have a hard time bringing his/her ideas and designs to magnificence. "

Oheka is now 80 percent restored after years of vandalism, including many fires, and is now open to visitors for weddings, mansion tours, corporate retreats, bar and bat mitzvahs, fund-raisers and film productions. Oheka is also a luxury hotel with 32 guestrooms on the upper floors of the estate. It is 115,000 square feet with 115 rooms and 50 baths.
Castle with Jewish Heritage Its survival owes to the steel and concrete Kahn insisted on using after a previous residence of his was lost in a fire. Some of the walls at Oheka are three-and-a-half feet thick. As Kahn wanted the site to have a commanding view and presence, earth was hauled by laborers to set it on the hill Oheka now enjoys. The cost of the structure was $11 million plus $1 million for the original 443 acres in Cold

Spring Harbor where it was erected. Cold Spring Country Club and its golf course now stand on some of the original acreage and is available for hotel guests of Oheka to enjoy. There will be a garden party on the glorious grounds on June 10. See www.oheka.com or call 631-659-1400 for more information. Some of the highlights of the home include the grand entry staircase, modeled after the horseshoe staircase at Fontainebleau; faux boix plasterwork, a Medieval technique which looks like woodwork, is painted in a warm amber in the library; and a ballroom where Arturo Toscanini once performed and scenes for "DeLovely" were filmed, seats 350. After Mr. Kahn died in 1934, the family sold the estate to the Welfare Fund of the Sanitation Workers, which used it as a retirement home, renaming it "Sanita." During World War II it was used by the Deja Vu Studios Merchant Marines as a radio operators school, and in 1948 it became a military academy before falling into disuse. Kahn biographer Theresa M. Collins called the banker, "the most influential patron of the arts ever known to America." She cited his bringing a Golden Age to the Metropolitan
Opera, the dancer Vaslav Nijinsky to America and investing $10,000 in "Lady Be Good!" after hearing George Gershwin play, "The Man I Love," as examples of his generosity.
"He fell in love with Oheka and set out to bring back to life this historic and monumental treasure
Developer Gary Melius of Long Island purchased Oheka (an acronym for Otto Hermann Kahn) and its remaining 23 acres for 1.5 million dollars in 1984 after the Cold Spring Hills Civic Association sought to save it. He has poured $30 million more into the estate in a restoration that employed many historians, restoration experts and Long Island Gold Coast architects. Slate from the original quarry in Vermont was brought in; workers were dispatched to the Library of Congress to unearth letters Kahn had written about the gardens to revive them.
"There were many naysayers who advised him (Mr. Melius) against buying Oheka, but he forged ahead despite a host of problems ranging from the terrible state of disrepair to issues with the town of Huntington zoning board," said Mary McCaffery, a frequent visitor from Bethpage, N.Y. "I feel very lucky to Brett Matthews photography be a part of Oheka's life," Mr. Melius said. His daughters, Kelly Melius and Nancy Melius-Murton (a former Broadway stage dancer) have joined the family business, helping manage special events. "We are both enormously proud of our father and privileged to be a part of his vision for Oheka," said Mrs. Melius-Murton. "He fell in love with Oheka and set out to bring back to life this historic and monumental treasure of American history in a way that respects and preserves the integrity of the estate while giving visitors the chance to experience Oheka as it was intended...as a home, a retreat and a fantastic place to hold a party." Wedding of Cindy Lee & Kenny Grossman
C
indy and Kenny met as freshmen at Emory University in Atlanta. The couple now lives Austin, Texas, where Cindy is a tax attorney at a prestigious international estate planning and wealth preservation firm, and Kenny is an architect at a nationally acclaimed design firm. During their nearly 10-year courtship, Cindy and Kenny traveled frequently together, including spending a semester studying in Israel. Therefore, it was only fitting that Kenny proposed while the two were on vacation in Paris. The couple was fortunate that Kenny’s
64 | CHAGIGAH MAGAZINE
aunt and uncle, Paulette and Sammy Papilsky, were in Paris at the same time, and were able to celebrate the occasion with them. Upon returning from Paris, Cindy and Kenny stopped in New York on their way back to Texas, where Kenny’s parents, Adrienne and Steve Grossman, hosted a delightful brunch in honor of the young couple. The bride and groom decided to have their wedding in Cedarhurst, N.Y., at Temple Beth El, where close to 200 family and friends joined the couple for the simcha. Rabbi Kenneth Hain, who is the groom’s long-time rabbi and who oversaw the bride’s orthodox conversion, presided over the ceremony. Cindy and Kenny made an elegant couple under the chuppah designed by Chris Stefan of Stefan’s Florist in Cedarhurst. Cindy wore a stunning Reem Acra gown, and Kenny and his groomsmen wore handsome tuxedos from Victor Talbot’s. The chuppah was adorned in flowers that complemented the bride’s bouquet of white orchids and the bridesmaids’ bouquets of white roses. Following the ceremony, Robert and Gayle Wilk of Seaview Caterers provided an exquisite party with an elaborate cocktail hour and
gourmet seated dinner, which were both set to the lively sounds of Neshoma Orchestra. All of the guests were treated to an exuberant workout during the hour of Jewish dancing that preceded the dinner and reception. During the cake cutting, Neshoma Orchestra sang a beautiful rendition of “At Last” by Ella Fitzgerald—a song close to the bride’s heart given the couple’s very long courtship. Photography was provided by Hy Goldberg of Visions Fine Photography, a longtime friend of the groom and his family.
Mr. Goldberg arranged for traditional photography as well as a photojournalist to document the celebration. This combination provided a wonderful range in artistic style to the photographs, which Cindy, Kenny and their parents continue to enjoy. Cindy and Kenny’s wedding started a new chapter in the couple’s lives, and both have extremely fond memories of the love, excitement, happiness and fun that filled the entire day. Wedding of Esther Avrany & Albert Silvera
I
t was April 2008 when Albert Silvera and Esther Avrany first met in the elevator at Turnberry Isle in Miami. Neither of them wanted to go to Florida, and so it was destiny that they met under the unusual circumstances. Esther was residing in Israel at the time and Albert in New York. He wined and dined her during her stay in New York, where she stopped over after a trip to Florida. Esther then flew back to Israel so the couple kept a long distance relationship. Long distance was of course difficult for the both of them, so Albert decided to pay Esther a visit in Israel to pursue his beloved one. He obviously succeeded, being that Esther moved to New York shortly after his visit. Albert had planned a surprise proposal at the Plaza Hotel in, of course, the elevator. The elevator was adorned in rose petals and flowers designed by David Tutera. Thanks to the help of the Plaza crew, the proposal went off without a hitch. Esther and Albert both knew right away that they would not get married anywhere other than the extravagant Shaare Zion Synagogue on Ocean Parkway in Brooklyn, N.Y. The couple felt that there would be no better feeling than to be blessed together as one in front of the Torah. The big day, May 12, had finally arrived and Steve Papas arranged the ballroom and chuppah with beautiful lavender and purple flowers, lucites and couches. Esther was dressed in an exquisite gown by Galit Couture. The ceremony was one not to be forgotten. Esther marched down the 66 | CHAGIGAH MAGAZINE
aisle to the music of Harei At Mekudeshet Li prepared by Eyal Amram, while Birchat Hakalah, recorded earlier by her, played in the background. The wedding party and guests, especially Albert, were extremely moved as their faces glistened with tears. Family and friends flew in from Los Angeles and Israel to share this special night with the bride and groom. Jeremy and George from RAM Caterers were a pleasure to work with through it all. The guests never left the dance floor thanks to the Faks Brothers, Simon and Morris, who did a marvelous job playing all the latest music. Morris and Victor Gindi did a sensational job in capturing every moment of the night. Their patience and creativity are second to none as they made the night a memorable one. The night of May 12 was sensational and will forever be in the hearts of the friends and family of Esther and Albert Silvera. Digital Photographic Studio

by lighting up the room with fuschia colors and crystal beading hanging from the ceiling, not to mention lovely flower arrangements including orchids and lilies in various tropical colors. Many of the guests described the evening as a “dream” and how every detail was planned to perfection. The style of music complimented the look of the hall perfectly, as orchestrated by DJ Alex of Style Events. The white dance floor was constantly covered throughout the night with guests of all ages dancing and jumping. This was not just a wedding— it very strongly resembled a trendy New York City nightclub. Every table had its own personal Patron Silver bottle and shot glasses. Also, there were servers whose sole job of the evening was to be sure everyone at the wedding was given any drink at any time. The bride and groom wanted everyone to feel nothing but happiness that evening There was one segment of the evening, however, that stood above and beyond anything else. The stunning bride took the dance floor in the midst of the party, wearing a gown designed by Vera Wang, to sing for her friends and family. Being a popular vocalist in Great Neck, N.Y., Charlotte silenced the crowd with her remarkable rendition of Celine Dion’s “Because You Loved Me.” The audience was hushed by the beauty of her voice but began tearing when Jonathan, who wore a tuxedo designed by Ralph Lauren, joined his bride in the center of the dance floor and ever gently kissed her hand expressing his neverending love for his new wife. 84 | CHAGIGAH MAGAZINE
Forever these two families can remember the evening from the pictures and video taken by Bobby Farokhzad and Cecilia of Studio Flash. Many weddings are very similar and the guests are prone to leaving as soon as their dinner is completed. However, the wedding of Charlotte and Jonathan kept the guests yearning for more, and finally, when the night was over one could see by their faces that this was one of the best weddings of the year. Bat Mitzvah of Nicole Biton
N
icole Biton’s family chose the chic, dance hall atmosphere of GLO in Westbury, N.Y., to celebrate Nicole’s Bat Mitzvah on May 17. Her parents, Danny and Chari Biton, wanted family and friends to celebrate her Bat Mitzvah in a lively, classy venue where everyone could kick up their heels and have fun. GLO offered the family the type of party they envisioned—with built-in high-tech lighting and sound, widescreen televisions and glow effects that surround the room and club seating throughout. The catering and event coordination were expertly provided by Dover Caterers. Tables were enhanced with large fuchsia and purple orchids set in glowing displays, designed by Adrian of Metro Floral Decorators of Great Neck, N.Y. Metro Floral Decorators also provided the tall orchid arrangements in the entrance, which elegantly adorned the place card table. The photography, montage and video were done expertly by Golan of Weiss Productions. Master of Ceremonies Nore of Entertainment Tonite energized the guests non-stop throughout

the entire evening. Nicole’s big brother Mike kept things lively while he bounced on the stage. The party games and photo favors were provided by The Main Event, who also presented the family with a mini album of pictures from the party to take home with them on the very same night. Guests received a small gift box with pearl chocolates created by Dolce Occasion of Great Neck. At the end of the night, Nicole’s friends received sweatshirts that were specially designed for Nicole by Jaylor Party Favors of Woodbury, N.Y. Bar Mitzvah of Brandon Novel
T
he Bar Mitzvah of Brandon Novel at Temple Beth Torah in Melville, N.Y., on March 15 was a sight to see. Walking in, guests were greeted by butlers holding exotic drinks while helping lead them into the cocktail room. The cocktail room was elegantly arranged into different sections of exotic foods from all over the world. The hit was the sushi table that had duck and beef 90 | CHAGIGAH MAGAZINE
along with more traditional sushi fare, all catered by Morrell Caterers. As the music started the guests were guided into the main hall, a charming room decorated with wooden walls with layered blue velvet inserts. But the exotic flowers and peacock feather arrangements on silver tablecloths with matching silver chairs (Designed by Fariba and Adrian of Metro Floral Decorators) added extra elegance to the room. Not to mention the LED club lighting around the room. The music by Style Event led by Amir Shaw had everyone on their feet all night, kids included. During dinner service the cocktail room was converted into a kids’ lounge where a separate DJ played hip-hop music, and included video games, a T-shirt stand, personalized dog tags and selfimposed pictures. Casino tables, provided by Main Event, were also active for the kids throughout the evening. A truly uplifting party for guests young and old, all captured by Studio Flash in Blu-ray video and digital pictures. Photography by Studio Flash

Bat Mitzvah of Monica Slochowsky
S
mile, Mon! At twilight on March 8, Abe Fuchs of Newstar Caterers along with his wife Helen and in conjunction with Steven Dalsimer of Dalsimer Florist transformed Manhattan Beach Jewish Center into a private island getaway for the evening. Upon entering Monica Slochowsky’s Bat Mitzvah guests became immediately transported to a tropical paradise. The fantasy began when guests stepped across a wooden bridge to a tiki bar serving tropical drinks by Newstar’s meticulous staff. Monica’s parents, Ann and Michael, accompanied by older sister Brenda and younger brother Gary Bainish, greeted everyone during the cocktail hour where there were no less than 30 dishes being served by Newstar staff dressed in Hawaiian shirts. The raves came in on the fruit grilling station. Sol from Make It Snappy! made sure the kids were entertained immediately with the hottest new entertainment booths: canvas photos, “Rock Band” the video game, graffiti-spray-painted T-shirts and hats ,as well as the standard favorites such as framed snapshots, air hockey, foosball and Pop-A-Shot. After the smorgasbord, guests entered a ballroom decorated with gardens,

trellis and beach paraphernalia along with magnificent, fruit-themed centerpieces on the adult tables and Monica’s tropical lounge theme decorations for the kids’ tables. Master of Ceremonies Mario, of Malka Entertainment, along with DJ Malka’s Malkettes, persuaded all guests to join the Slochowsky’s on the dance floor for some simcha dancing. The crowd was energized throughout the evening by the fantastic music and the kids were hooked on Malka’s giveaways. As dinner service arrived, the adults feasted on an islandthemed meal consisting of a coconut shelled sorbet intermezzo while the kids had their own special buffet set up for them. Jason of Jerry Meyer Studio and his photography staff moved quietly among the guests taking video and still photos to produce an unforgettable memory of the evening for the family. To complete the family’s vision of a perfect night, after dinner the adults moved over to a calypso bar room for a Viennese dessert extravaganza and more dancing— this time to the sounds of a live steel drum band—while the kids remained to dance to the beat of the Malkettes, enjoy the entertainment booths and make a memory candle for Monica. As the Bat Mitzvah fell on the day before Ta’anit Esther everyone went home with Shalach Manot: the adults receiving Smile, Mon! mugs and the kids Smile, Mon! camping chairs. The Slochowsky family would like to thank their amazing friends and family, as well as all the Manhattan Beach JC and vendor staff, who made this amazing party into a true simcha. And Monica would like to give a special thank you to everyone who was involved in helping her make, collect and send over 750 Tfilat Haderech hanging cards to the IDF soldiers in Israel through the organization ”A Package From Home.” Photography by Jerry Meyer Studio

Wedding of Jasmine Livian & Joseph Kashimallak
A
fter Jasmine Livian and Joseph Kashimallak first met in 2008, they could not stop thinking about each other for weeks. As mentioned in the article about their engagement last winter, sparks were flying from day one. Less than a year later, the wedding of the happy couple took place on Sunday, Feb. 22, at the prestigious Huntington Hilton, in Melville, N.Y. Jasmine wore a stunning dress

by Carolina Herrera, and Joseph wore a custom made tuxedo by Astor & Black. Rabbi Elyahu Ben Chaim, Rabbi Yosef Bitton and Rabbi Mordechai Kohanim sang beautiful songs as they walked down the aisle before conducting the chuppah ceremony. With the help of Kings Point Florist, the table of seating cards was decorated like a floral garden, and the ballroom was aptly decorated
as well. The food by Lederman Caterers was top notch, as exemplified by the looks on guests’ faces. Amir of AA Entertainment played Persian, Israeli and dance music for the guests, while Abdul Assmar entertained with Arabic tunes throughout the night. The crew from Studio Flash of Great Neck captured the memorable and intimate moments during the evening. And family and friends of the couple got caught up in the excitement all celebration long — even jumping off stage and carrying and tossing the groom in the air. Family on both sides from Europe and Israel flew in for the occasion to help make the wedding celebration as special as possible. Jasmine and Joseph truly enjoyed the best night of their lives. They send many thanks to all of their family and friends who joined them for their simchah. Photography by Studio Flash

Bat Mitzvah of Kayla Lea Pourgol
M
arch 15 was the night of Kayla Lea Pourgol’s life. Her Bat Mitzvah event took place at NYIT’s de Seversky Center in Old Westbury, N.Y.—the place of her dreams. It all started at 4 p.m. Kayla ran into the hall—dress and shoes in hands—and headed straight for the stairs before the photographer stopped her and said, “OK, Kayla, be down in five.” So she quickly climbed the stairs, skipped to a room that was reserved for the family and threw on her outfit. Two photographers and a videographer were waiting back down the stairs—and it was at that moment, with the light of the camera focused on 96 | CHAGIGAH MAGAZINE
her, that she knew it was her night to shine. As the first guests arrived by car it dawned on Kayla that this was what she’d been waiting for. Four hundred people would eventually turn up to help her celebrate. Cocktail hour began, but all Kayla could think about was when the real festivities would begin. Before she knew it MC Andre told her to get ready for her grand entrance. It was time for the entrance. The adrenaline kicked in as Kayla stood behind the door, her hands shaking with excitement. The DJ called her named and she danced into the hall, friends and family all applauding. The room was crowded with smiling faces and guests ready to party. After parents Kamran and Roya and sisters Nicole and Courtney were announced came the candle lighting. After candle lighting it was time for Persian singers Pouya to entertain the partygoers. Kayla danced the night away with all her loved ones and couldn’t have had a better night. It truly was the night of her life. Photography by Studio Flash

Bar Mitzvah of Daniel Dellal
D
aniel Dellal was called to the Torah on March 21 at the historic Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue of New York on Shabbat HaChodesh. The very next day, on a beautiful and clear Sunday evening overlooking the New York skyline from the Rainbow Room at the top of Rockefeller Center, Susie and William Dellal threw their son Daniel a celebration of his Bar Mitzvah, a mix of Sepharadi and Ashkenazi cultures. Daniel’s affair was truly an international event, with family coming from all over the globe: his maternal grandparents, Jack and Malvina Ehrman, from Antwerp, Belgium; his maternal uncles, the Strozenberg brothers, from Brazil; his aunts and cousins visiting from Caracas, Venezuela, London and Montréal. The reception was a feast of diverse flavors and delicacies reflecting Daniel’s Persian/Iraqi and Ashkenazi 98 | CHAGIGAH MAGAZINE
background. The affair was beautifully catered by RAM caterers under the careful supervision and direction of Amy Udell. The evening rocked with a wonderful mix of international music, by Alex of Style Events. Thanks to Daniel’s brother David, the 90 teenagers were entertained and fascinated by the humor of the giant Robot of the Future Sico Millennia, provided by RobotVillage.com. And all the memories were captured by the photography and video expertise of Jerry Meyer Studio. Daniel’s Chesed project was to sponsor another boy’s Bar Mitzvah in Israel, whose father was a victim of a terrorist bomb, in conjunction with One Family Fund. Daniel also donated the hundreds of glowing glitter lamps and fiber optics decorations that adorned each table at the affair to Chai Lifeline, to light up the life of sick children. It was a party out of this world, and the host and hostess would like to extend their gratitude to everybody for coming and making the night so memorable. Photography by Jerry Meyer Studio
