MINIMAL LETTERFORMS - PROJECT I Font:

Garamond Bold Using Garamond, I chose letters that had a signature look to them that only Garamond had. I chose the lowercase g, h, a, and s. Through multiple trials, I arrived at this conclusion. I focused on aligning the similar curves of the letters while balancing the white:black space. I chose to invert the colors because of the focal point in the center not being distrubed.

Through the exercise, I tried out many different fonts, I made a lot of tracings with Helvetica Light Italic as well as Memphis Bold. Both were very geometric and symmetrical and I realized I couldn’t reach a solution I really liked until I moved to Garamond Bold. The tracings I made, I was aiming to create an organic shape using the very geometric and shapely edges of all of the letters. This proved to be extremely hard and not as satisfying as working with a font that had less symmetry and more going on.

TYPE HIERARCHY STUDIES- PROJECT II Font:

Univers 45 Univers 65 This is the 3A version of the assignment, I added rules of different weights to create even more hierarchy among the different sizes and weights of the text. The last names being bolded definitely creates an inbalance between sides, but it is counter acted by the amount of lighter text justified left (the titles). This was my favorite final piece.

We were given a set of text at different weights in Univers, and originally we cut it out and arranged it on pieces of tracing paper. This was more difficult to reach really good leading becasue of the inaccuracy and the importance of a perfect cut. When the project was taken into InDesign, I had a lot easier time manipulating and exploring different options.

PAUL RAND BOOK - PROJECT III Font: Body Univers 45 Light 9pt

The final book project required a lot of reading and organization. I read the original text multiple times before even decididng how I was going to separate by pages and separate the photos evenly among all of the spreads. I marked up multiple copies of the text, making symbols for where I would put the images, where paragraph breaks would exist etc. The original design pretty much did not change except for the decision to make alternating white/black pages to create more juxtaposition of the photos among different backgrounds. I work a lot with text, and came into the project knowing very simple print rules so it definitely helped. I chose to do collumns rather than large bodies because of its readability. Along with keeping the type per page/spread to a minimum as a design feature.

My main concern was being able to bind the book cleanly and efficiently. So I made many mockups of the book and printed them out on regular paper and just tried to practice how I would bind the final version. I bound about 3 books and found different ways to make less of a mess and figure out which way worked best in order to get to the book I would turn in. I enjoyed the craft part of the project, and definitely appreciate my obsession with making sure everything worked out the way it should.
