TODAY’S PANELISTS Scott Avila Deloitte Financial Advisory Services LLP Scott Avila is a seasoned restructuring professional with more than 20 years of management and consulting experience. Through his work with national and international organizations, Mr. Avila has demonstrated a keen ability to create value in underperforming companies by quickly assessing the situation, developing an appropriate business strategy and implementing key tactics to quickly generate quantifiable results. He has been instrumental in a number of restructurings across a wide range of industries, including agriculture, apparel, consumer products, construction, distribution, rental and leasing, health care, manufacturing, media and publishing, retail, telecommunications and transportation. Currently, Mr. Avila serves as a principal for the Corporate Restructuring Group within Deloitte Financial Advisory Services LLP where he helps operationally and financially distressed organizations through outof-court restructurings and Chapter 11 reorganizations. In addition, Mr. Avila is actively involved in numerous professional organizations and frequently speaks and writes on topics related to turnaround management and corporate renewal.
Eric Goldberg Stutman, Treister & Glatt Eric Goldberg is a senior shareholder of Stutman, Treister & Glatt. For more than 20 years, Eric has been involved in all aspects of the insolvency process, from single-asset real estate cases to the restructuring of multibillion dollar public companies. Eric is known as an aggressive advocate and a practical problem solver who knows how and when to make a deal. Eric represents debtors, committees, bondholders, hedge funds and buyers of distressed assets, both in and out-of-court. His practice has an emphasis in complex bankruptcyrelated litigation, including contested confirmations, termination of collective bargaining agreements and high-stakes fraudulent transfer claims. Eric is a frequent speaker on bankruptcy-related topics. He has made presentations to the American Bankruptcy Institute, the Strategic Research Institute and the Los Angeles Bankruptcy Forum, among others, on topics including asset acquisitions in Chapter 11, claims litigation and the Chapter 11 plan process. Mr. Goldberg received an AB degree from Cornell University and his JD from Harvard Law.
Shawn Hassel Alvarez & Marsal Shawn Hassel is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal where he leads the Turnaround and Restructuring practice in Phoenix. He is a senior member of the Management Team in the West Region and a member of the firm’s Executive Committee for U.S. Restructuring. Mr. Hassel specializes in developing operational and financial solutions for underperforming or overleveraged companies in an effort to maximize value for their stakeholders. With more than 19 years of experience as an interim executive and financial adviser, Mr. Hassel has worked almost exclusively on complex company-side engagements. He has served clients across a wide range of industries, including the manufacturing, consumer products, technology, construction, real estate, retail and gaming sectors. Mr. Hassel earned a bachelor’s degree in finance and accounting from the University of Arizona. He is a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA), and a Certified Insolvency and Restructuring Advisor (CIRA).
TODAY’S PANELISTS Kevin Smith Platinum Equity Kevin Smith is a Principal and Head of Debt Capital Markets at Platinum Equity, a global private equity firm that specializes in mergers, acquisitions and operations of companies that provide missioncritical products, services and solutions in diverse industries. Since its founding in 1995, Platinum has completed over 150 acquisitions through corporate divestitures, public-to-private transactions, and transactions with private sellers. Platinum currently has three funds that have endowed it with $7.2 billion in capital, including the recently closed $3.75 billion Fund III. Mr. Smith is responsible for all debt capital placement and related corporate finance activity for new and existing portfolio companies, and helps manage the firm’s relationships with capital providers around the world and spearheads financing transactions related to leveraged buyouts, refinancings and recapitalizations using high yield, senior and junior debt, and ABL structures. Prior to joining Platinum in 2010, Mr. Smith was a senior leverage finance banker with Wells Fargo, Mellon, UMTB Group and First Chicago/Bank One. Mr. Smith holds a BS in Finance from Butler University and an MBA in Finance from the USC Marshall School of Business.
TODAY’S MODERATOR Matthew Niemann Houlihan Lokey Matthew Niemann runs the Western US Restructuring practice and is the Global Head of Real Estate Investment Banking at Houlihan Lokey where he is a Shareholder and Managing Director. Mr. Niemann initially joined Houlihan Lokey in 1999 and has served on the Firm’s Management Committee. Before rejoining Houlihan in 2008, Mr. Niemann spent three years with Cerberus Capital as an investment professional and served as Senior Managing Director and Chief Strategic Officer of GMAC ResCap. Earlier in his career, Mr. Niemann was with PricewaterhouseCoopers and practiced law for several years in the Corporate, Banking & Real Estate practices of Bryan Cave in St. Louis. Mr. Niemann holds a law and finance degree from St. Louis University, where he served on the Law Review. He was a guest lecturer at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University in Chicago, is registered with FINRA (Series 7 and 63) and has been recognized by the K&A Registry as one of the leading restructuring investment bankers in the United States.
