Projects 05’s key aim will be to explore the potential for layerings of materiality, colour and depth to act as a medium for disruptive, delightful change within existing spaces. We will take our first cue from the ‘dazzle ships’ of the 1930s and 40s, a series of richly decorated vessels of the line. Their abstract ‘camouflage’ was a highly colourful livery uniquely commissioned for each ship. It provides a fascinating example of vast supergraphic treatments that can be interpreted multi-variously as providing a functional ambiguity of form, heading and direction, as being a bright morale boosting exercise, and as a subversive artistic re-appropriation of a machine of war as a spatial intervention. As we propose our own insertions and interventions we will seek to learn from the ambiguity, energy and impact of such ‘decorative’ treatments; eschewing ‘politeness’ to seek confident, intriguing and delightful proposals.
0.2 Lear ning over vie w
The Major Project unit offers students the opportunity to undertake an extended piece of interiors design work, synthesising knowledge and understanding gained in the first 2 stages of the course. Typically studio groups set a research theme and site or sites for the year and individual students develop their own agendas for design and design research within this context. The unit runs across two terms and operates in close relationship to the Research Thesis and Future Practice & Portfolio units. It enables the student to develop an extensive design project supported by rigorous academic research and contextualisation. It is orientated towards future career trajectories via a professional portfolio format.
